Hi, As SoC officially ended, I wanted to summarize what has been done and not done in the halfedge data structure project ( also the generic geometry library project). - First the concept classes for the different halfedge data structures are implemented. The concepts are hds_concept, forward_hds_concept, backward_hds_concept, bidirectional_hds_concept, facet_hds_concept, vertex_hds_concept, facet_list_hds_concept, vertex_list_hds_concept, halfedge_list_hds_concept, and mutable versions of all these concepts. Each concept class is created in its own file (component), which allowed us to add class level doxygen documentation to all the components and create test files for each component separately. - Archetypes are implemented including the class level documentation and test files for each archetype. - After the concepts and archetypes are implemented and fully tested, we implemented the halfedge data structure itself, which is composed of the following components: -- container_selectors and container_gen: these handle the selection of the containers for different value types, and helper functions for low level manipulation of the STL containers, such as add, delete etc. -- halfedge_selectors and halfedge_functions : the concrete implementation of stored halfedge for various configurations of halfedge data structure, along with various functions to access and manipulate the halfedges. -- facet_selectors and facet_functions : concrete implementation of stored facets along with various functions to access and manipulate facets. -- vertex_selectors and vertex_functions: similar to facets. All the components are again has its own class level documentation, usage example, in code documentation and test files to test all possible selections and manipulations. - Having implemented the main halfedge data structure, along with documentation and full tests, we started adding Euler operators to access and manipulate the halfedge data structure. We first implemented the small functions that are commonly used in Euler operators (stitch functions as its called in code) along with documentation and test cases, later the baseline of the Euler operators are added. The above mentioned implementation took more time than anticipated so although it was in the original proposal, I could not complete the following parts of the project: - Test classes for Euler operators - High level example algorithms such as Delaunay triangulation, and others. - Adapters for existing libraries such as CGAL and LEDA - Full documentation for the project (although currently each component is well documented on its own ) Although the summer of code is officially over, I do plan to work on the project for the next couple of months. I wish to finish the proposed parts and put it in a more complete shape. Finally, I really enjoyed working on the project, learned a lot and gained a lot of experience. I saw your email[1] via the gmane web interface (did you Cc me? maybe you mail was eaten by my antispam =). I don't really know how to handle "partial" completion transitions (I mean, with guards). But simple completion transitions could be expressed something like: struct B; struct A: sc::simple_state< A, Machine > { typedef sc::completion_transition reactions; }; I guess is better to have partial support than no support at all =) To implement "partial" completion transitions, maybe it could be some scheme like this: struct ev: sc::event< ev > {}; struct B; struct C; struct A: sc::simple_state< A, Machine > { typedef mpl::list< sc::completion_transition< >, sc::custom_reaction< ev > > reactions; sc::result react(const completion_event&) { if (guard) return transit(); return**** discard_event(); } sc::result react(const ev&) { if (!guard) return transit< C >(); return discard_event(); } }; When the state is entered, a complete_event is automatically posted, so it can be handled by the first react(). Well, I guess I had an idea... =P PS: I don't know much about UML, so I don't know if this idea is compatible with the specifications... AFAIK this is possible in UML. Can I express that in boost.statechart? I was working the ticket list at <http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/report/14>, trying to re-categorize the issues under the "None" component. I noticed that there isn't any components for the Pool and Optional libraries. How can I add them, or does an administrator have to add new components? I saw that, and it looks great. uBlas has a matrix container that's similar too. The reason I posted this matrix container is because it's simpler and more general than gil or ublas. For example, a container of spreadsheet cells may not warrant a programmer learning (or a compiler parsing) these larger, more specialized libraries. This class belongs under the general category 'containers', which is probably the first place a person would look in this example, rather than looking under 'image processing' or 'linear algebra'. Constrained Value library

Hi all, At last I've managed to find some time to polish the Constrained Value library (former Constrained Types library) and want to share it to hear any opinions and suggestions. Best regards, Robert Kawulak FROM THE MOTIVATION SECTION OF DOCUMENTATION: The Boost Constrained Value library contains class templates useful for creating constrained objects. The simplest example of a constrained object is hour. The only valid values for an hour within a day are integers from the range [0, 23]. There's no C++ type which exactly matches this set of valid values, so a larger integral type (e.g. int) must be used to represent hours. But this can lead to errors -- for instance, one may accidentally assign an invalid value, say 26, to a variable holding an hour. The Boost Constrained Value library provides a mechanism protecting against such mistakes: bounded_int<int, 0, 23>::type hour; hour = 20; // OK hour = 26; // error -- throws an exception Another feature of the library is the ability to specify what happens in case of assignment of an invalid value. For instance, an exception may be thrown as in the example above, or the value may be adjusted to meet the constraint criterions: wrapping_int<int, 0, 255>::type buffer_index; buffer_index = 257; // OK -- adjusts the value to fit in the range by wrapping it assert(buffer_index == 1); The library doesn't focus only on constrained objects that hold a value belonging to a specified range (i.e., bounded objects). Hi Eric, I recently tried to make recursive/nested regular expressions available for the dynamic regex. It would be cool if you could have look at that. http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/branches/xpressive/nested_dynamic_regex/ To achieve that I extended the compiler traits, which now includes a lookup for references to other regular expressions. I saw that static regular expressions used by reference, store a weak pointer to regex the regex impl object. For dynamic regular expressions I had to store a pointer to the regular expression, and make the class that groups all expressions noncopyable. Do you see a nicer solution? Regards Andreas Pokorny

[IOStreams] Opinion on test case needed

Hi! I had problems using iostreams::stream<file_descriptor> with Windows and MSVC 8 Express. The file_descriptor had a bug and failed seeking. But the error had gone unnoticed. Because of this I wrote a test case for this in hope to discover an error in IOStreams (source: see below). I did not discover one. Instead the test runs fine on linux/gcc 4.1.2 but fails on Windows/MSVC8Express (test run: see below). I based the test on "Standard C++ IOStreams and Locales" (Langer&Kreft), Section 1.3 "The Stream State". And I found the IOStreams library is just using std::iostream for handling the errors. So is MSVC buggy in this regard? Or am I missing something? [interest] matrix container adapter

If anyone is interested, I have developed a simple 2D matrix container adapter that we use for image processing and such. It's basically an stl-compliant interface that wraps a std::vector, or any other vector-like container, and provides - row/column indexing - iterators for subregion access - subscript function objects - normal stl container stuff like iterators and custom allocators - row/column insert/erase It's simple and general, and it's proven useful in our lab. Maybe someone else may find it useful too. [SVN] Repository branches/libs experiments

I've set up a couple of my development branches in SVN. See the attached screenshot of the Boost.System branch. It wasn't entirely clear how to cope with the fact that typical boost libraries have several sections. For example, Boost.System has one header in boost-root/boost, other headers in boost-root/boost/system, and then the rest of the library in boost-root/libs/system. I've currently got the filesystem branch organized like this: /svn/boost/branches/libs/ system/ boost/ system/... system/ build/... doc/... src/... test/... That works, but I'm wondering if it would be more consistent to have organized it like this: /svn/boost/branches/libs/ system/ boost/ system/... libs/ system/ build/... doc/... src/... test/... In other words, organized the sub-tree under /svn/boost/branches/libs/system exactly the same way the trunk is organized. That might be easier for others to understand. I also wonder if it has any advantages as far as various SVN operations go. Opinions? --Beman

[statechart] Completion transitions again.

Hi! I'm looking at the statechart library and I found myself in a situation where I need a completion transition. I saw in this thread[1] that they are not supported yet, so I wonder if you plan to implement them in a near future. The only way to simulate that now is to make a dummy event and call pocess_event/post_event/fifo_scheduler<>::queue_event|| at in the enter/transition action of the state? Possible bug in shared_array

Hello, I think I have found an bug in the shared_array implementation in version 1.34.1 for VC8.0. I have posted this mail also in the user list. Hi to all, First of all, thanks to all who participated in recent threads about Boost.Intrusive options and extended configurability discussions. These days I've been experimenting a bit with this option and also with stateful value_traits (those who could allow non-intrusive hooks). ----------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------- Passing policies to hooks and containers ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ As you know, one of my main concerns is that a container explicitly set with some options, should have the same type as another container defined with the same options in a different order. I meant: list<T, base_hook<my_base_hook>, constant_time_size<false> > should have the same type as: list<T, constant_time_size<false>, base_hook<my_base_hook> > l; My preferred alternative is the more verbose: typedef list_options < base_hook<my_base_hook> , constant_time_size<false> >::type options_t; list<T, options_t> l; that guarantees the same type for the same options. 1) Implemented interface: I've implemented all current container options using this approach. I've chosen a different options configurer "list_options", "slist_options"... because otherwise, I couldn't set defaults that could lead to the correct types. The default hooks is the base hook so a user can just say: class my_type : public list_base_hook<> {} list<my_type> l; Some options must not be set in the container *but in the hook*, since options affect both the hook and the container. Examples: void pointer definition, the linking policy. I think hook options can be unified so I have: typedef hook_options < void_pointer<offset_ptr<void> > , link<normal_link> , tag<my_tag> >::type hook_options_t; class my_type : public list_base_hook<hook_options_t> { typedef list_base_hook<hook_options_t> my_hook_t; } typedef list_options < base_hook<my_hook_t> , size_type<std::size_t> >::type options_t; list<T, options_t> l; As you can see, specifying options can be quite verbose (comparing it to the old way, but as new options are added (for example, custom buckets definition in hash containers) users don't have put arguments in order and can change only the options they want to change from the default. 2) Declaration of new classes: template<class T, class ListOptions> class list; template<class T, class SlistOptions> class slist; template<class T, class Pred, class SetOptions> class set; template<class T, class Hash, class Equal, class UsetOptions> class unordered_set; So the declaration of intrusive containers would be exactly the same as the STL containers plus an options argument. 3) Problem: Definition of member hooks is very long class my_type { list_member_hook member_hook_; } typedef list_options < member_hook<my_type, list_member_hook, &my_type::member_hook_> >::type options; list<my_type, options> l; Why? Because I can't make C++ deduce a pointer to member value in a single template parameter passed to a class. It would be nice that C++ could deduce my_type and list_member_hook from the value directly yielding to: typedef list_options //Deduce my_type and list_member_hook automatically < member_hook<&my_type::member_hook_> >::type options; If anyone can correct me, I would be *really* glad. 4) Custom value_traits Current interface takes a value_traits class as the first parameter in containers: template<class ValueTraits, bool...> class list; ValueTraits concept is very powerful because allows separating the concepts of a Node and a Value. The node is the minimal structure that is need to form a group of nodes (group of pointers to form a list, a tree...) and the Value is the whole user type that is somehow related to the node (via inheritance, membership, or other). Intrusive documentation offers examples of custom ValueTraits to reuse nodes for different containers or to deal with non modifiable ABI of old code. This is still possible specifying the value_traits instead of the hook: typedef list_options < value_traits<my_value_traits> >::type options; list<T, my_value_traits> l; --------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- Stateful value_traits (aka allowing extrusive containers) --------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- I've started experimenting with stateful value_traits, while trying to keep zero overhead when ValueTraits is an empty class. There are some problems though: 1) Iterators Iterators containa pointer to node and they use ValueTraits to obtain the user value from the node. If an stateful ValueTraits is used, we also need to store a pointer to the value traits stored in the container. If I want zero overhead when using hooks or just value traits with static functions I have to avoid storing the pointer when the iterator is stateless. How do we know if an allocator is stateless? One possibility is to check if the ValueTraits is empty, that is, has no members. However, this does not guarantee that ValuetTraits will define static functions so that no pointer to ValueTraits is needed to convert from a node to a container. I think it's a good aproximation or I could also define a traits or internal constant to say "this ValueTraits is stateless/stateful". For the moment, my current option is to consider an empty ValueTratis stateless, so it must define conversion functions as static members. 2) Losing static functions Some member functions of intrusive containers are static, so that there is no need to have a reference to the container. This sometimes is very useful (e.g. list::iterator_to) but this can't be achieved if stateful value traits are used. I can think 3 options: -> Convert static functions in non-static (losing some advantages) -> Offer static and non-static versions. Static versions won't compile with stateful allocators (via BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT). -> Someone knows have to make a function static or not depending on a compile-time boolean. 3) Stateless, but taking advantage of composition In a recent discussion about adding custom bucket traits to unordered containers a booster wanted to have the bucket outside the class (for example, to reuse that with other containers). With stateful allocators this can be possible if bucket traits are stateful an contain a pointer to the real bucket traits instance. But this increases the size of your intrusive container. However if the external bucket implementation is very near to the container (said, it's a member of the same structure or whatever), it's possible to obtain the address of the the external resource based on the address of the container or the internal traits instance included in the container. Rei Thiessen was requesting that when he explained the customized bucket info structure. template< unsigned n > struct bucket_info_size_n { /* appropriate constructors... */ bucket_ptr buckets_; template<class T> bucket_ptr buckets( T* container ) const { return buckets_; } size_type buckets_len() const { return 1<<n; } } So based on the address of the container, the user can find the resource (in this case, the bucket array) obtaining zero size overhead (the internal traits is empty). This logic can be extended to every traits class of the container, but specially to ValueTraits. But this would require passing the address of the container to every function the traits class implements. Users not wanting this composition hack surely don't want to change their signatures to just support this extremely advance practice: before class my_value_traits { node_ptr to_node_ptr(value_type &val) //... }; after class my_value_traits { template<class Container> node_ptr to_node_ptr(value_type &val, const Container& cont) //... }; So if there is any metaprogramming hack (if increases compilation time too much, forget it ;-) ) I would like to receive suggestions. Otherwise, a member static const bool saying "pass container address" in value traits might be useful, so that the container changes the calls to the traits with another equivalent one passing the address of the container. I haven't still experimented this composition hack so I'm really open to all suggestions from advanced users. My point is that this should be really optional and should not affect users not using these advanced features. As Rei said (inflating my ego): "These intrusive containers are so close to perfect that it's painful to have to modify them." So let's make them perfect ;-) Regards, Ion
