This is a simple yet interesting object factory. Main points are: - Support for many class hierarchies at the same time - Object constructor arguments with generic type - Object constructor overloading - Support for user supplied 'object create' functions - Dynamic class registering/unregistering - No RTTI or special library requirements, only an associative container is used. - And finally the most important: 100% type safe also at runtime Especially constructor overloading and runtime type safety are two niceties you won't find easily googling around. Finally there are a couple of bugs that I won't reveal ;-) they are not easy to spot and fixing them will complicate the code. Because this is intended more as a presentation of the ideas then production code I will fix them when I'll be confident design is sound. Anyhow I keep a separated test framework with about 40 tests to exercise the factory under different paths. So I would say this is 'working' code. Help wanted: porting/testing the Math Toolkit to MacOS X

Any MacOS X experts willing to run some tests on the Math Toolkit, and/or help track down any porting issues? The latest code is in the sandbox under "math_toolkit", last time the tests were run on that platform there were still some unresolved issues with the Mac's strange long double type to be resolved... Macro/Typedef for the biggest integer for template parameters

We've talked about this problem off and on for years now, and I'm wondering if we can finally solve it. Many compilers supply built-in integer types beyond (unsigned) long int, but someone told me that there's no guarantee that those super-long types are suitable for use in a value-based template parameter. I'm wondering if we can develop typedefs, maybe in "boost/cstdint.hpp", that describe the largest suitable signed and unsigned built-in integer types that can be used as value-based template parameters. On basically-standard compilers, this would be "unsigned long" and "long". I'm thinking that we could default to boost::[u]intmax_t, and #case it for particular compilers after they choke on not being able to use "long long" or "__int64_t" in a template. Hi, I would like to know, how i can use Boost.MPI for IPC between different PCs. It is described in the introduction: "Unlike communication in threaded environments or using a shared-memory library, Boost.MPI processes can be spread across many different machines, possibly with different operating systems and underlying architectures." [constrained-value] additional features

I've managed to download this now (thanks!) and I've played about with added support for floats/doubles. I'd also quite like the idea of being able to retrieve the range of a constrained value so that I can use them in other more constrained values - e.g. degrees in a circle => [0, 359] but sometimes only half a circle is appropriate [0, 179]. I'd like to be able to model this, e.g. typedef bounded_int<int, 0, 359>::type degrees_in_circle; typedef bounded_int<int, degrees_in_circle::first, 180>::type degrees_in_semicircle; That's a bit contrived but hopefully you get my drift. Ada uses 'First and 'Last to get this sort of value and I've always found these sort of attributes (or 'traits') very useful. Cheers -- Martin

[Wave] injecting standard headers directly, without a file

[Did I already suggest something like this?...] The Wave preprocessing tool can accept locations for a compiler's system header files. I think the C++ standard allows the standard headers to not be implemented as conventional files. I'm wondering if we can do that, as an experiment. In other words, the Wave library could have an option to inject our version of idealized renditions of the standard headers directly into the token stream, without referencing actual header files. This could catch bugs that assume certain things about actual header files that wouldn't be present in our version. Our standard headers could be in the form of a collection of functions, one for each compiler item (function, type, object, template, macro, etc.). Those functions would be passed in a level of expression (declaration in a secret __boost_std namespace, injection of declaration into the std namespace, full definition in __boost_std namespace [or no namespace for macros]) and a descriptor of the environment (bits per byte, bytes per short/int/long, 2/1-complement or sign-mag, etc.). An inclusion function for each header would call the inclusion functions for each contained item, but only up to the lowest level required. Items originally from other headers would get included if needed, but without injection into std if avoidable. [utility] Proposal MSVC workaround for value_initialized - Ticket #1217

The data of the wrapper class boost::value_initialized<T> may not be initialized properly, when using Microsoft Visual C++. The problem is caused by two different compiler issues regarding value initialization. For details, please read the ticket that I submitted yesterday evening (#1217): http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/1217 Fernando Cacciola and I developed a new version of value_init.hpp, offering a workaround. The file is attached to the ticket: http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/attachment/ticket/1217/value_init_MSVC_work… The workaround version stores the bytes of the T object that is wrapped by value_initialized<T> as an instance of aligned_storage::type. During the construction of value_initialized<T>, it clears the bytes of T (using memset), just before constructing T itself, by placement new: std::memset(&x, 0, sizeof(x)); new (&x) T(); The workaround is enabled by defining a macro, BOOST_UTILITY_VALUE_INIT_WORKAROUND. As I never contributed to a Boost library before, what should I do in order to get this workaround reviewed, and hopefully get it into the library? Is it possible to create a high level (probably top level) always empty directory that I can svn switch to? Sorry, this is a repost - I forgot to specify the subject correctly. Has anybody tried building any quickbook docs lately? I updated yesterday (and again today) and found that I can't build any of the docs that I've been working on - or any of the other docs in sandbox/ doc_test. It looks like something is broken with the boostbook build instructions. How do I run the tests for a specific library using bjam?

I notice that all the boost libraries have tests associated with them, which can be invoked by bjam somehow. Can someone tell me how to invoke bjam to run a specific test for a given (single) library, or run the whole suite of tests for the single library? As opposed to running all tests for all libraries. Alternatively, if you could point me to some docs which describe it, I can take it from there. (I did some searching but have struck out so far). Thanks

There's tools/release/user-config.jam file, that contains some boostbook declarations that can only work on somebody's system. Users are confusing that file with tools/build/v2/user-config.jam. Anybody can explain why we need tools/release/user-config.jam? Assuming nobody will stand up and tell it's really needed within a week, I'll just delete it. - Volodya

One more wish/requirement for cv. Maybe this is already met? I haven't checked. I want to be able to select a policy that does nothing, and on (reasonably modern compilers) achieve performance comparable to the underlying (int) type. That is, I want to use this like logging - where I can switch it off at compile time and make the overhead negligible.

I am porting LEDA code to BGL, including code dealing with planar graphs. I have code like this: e2 = G.face_cycle_succ(e1); LEDA documentation says "For an edge e of a map G let face_cycle_succ(e) = cyclic_adj_pred(reversal(e))" I suppose there currently isn't any direct support for such an operation? As far as I understand, I would have to get the embedding[target(e,g)] and then look for e there, and take the predecessor of e, right? I suppose in an undirected graph edges and their "reversal" (i.e., the edge descriptor you get when you get the edge from the other end) are equal? I think directly supporting this would be a nice addition. Furthermore, I think LEDA can do this in O(1), which we cannot. Well, amortized it should be something like O(1), no? The only solution to this problem would probably be storing the embedding in the graph object. Another issue I have is adding an edge to a planar graph while preserving the embedding. E.g., in LEDA, I have code like this: newEdges.append(x = G.new_edge(e3,v)); newEdges.append(e1 = G.new_edge(e1,w)); G.set_reversal(x, e1); From the LEDA docs: "edge G.new_edge(edge e, node w, int dir=leda::behind) adds a new edge x = (source(e), w) to G. x is inserted in front of (dir=leda::before) or behind (dir=leda::behind) edge e into adj$ \_$edges(source(e)) and appended to in$ \_$edges(w) (if G is directed) or adj$ \_$edges(w) (if G is undirected). Here leda::before and leda::behind are predefined constants. The operation returns the new edge x. Precondition source(e)! = w if G is undirected." It seems to me that there is only one adjacent edges list for a vertex, that represents the planar embedding if it has been correctly computed and not invalidated. Well, what I want to say: Functions that can add edges to an embedding would be really cool. Of course, it would be the user's obligation not to invalidate the embedding. Cheers, Jens

Has anybody tried building any quickbook docs lately? I updated yesterday (and again today) and found that I can't build any of the docs that I've been working on - or any of the other docs in sandbox/ doc_test. It looks like something is broken with the boostbook build instructions. This is (basically) my Jamfile. using quickbook ; xml std : std.qbk ; boostbook standalone : std : .... ; Running it, I get this: /.../boost/tools/build/v2/build/virtual-target.jam:1017: in virtual- target.register-actual-name from module virtual-target error: Duplicate name of actual target: <pbin/gcc-4.1.2/debug>std.xml error: previous virtual target { quickbook%quickbook.quickbook-to- boostbook-std.xml.XML { std.qbk.QUICKBOOK } } error: created from ./std error: another virtual target { quickbook%quickbook.quickbook-to- boostbook-std.xml.XML { std.qbk.QUICKBOOK } } error: created from ./std error: added properties: <python-debugging>off error: removed properties: none If I comment out the boostbook target, the build will actually succeed, so the problem has to be something with the boostbook - and its something that has to have changed in the last week or so.[ Anybody have any ideas? [Config?] Cannot download 1.34.1, possibly due to "bug" in file type

Hi, I just tried to download the 1.34.1 zip from Sourceforge from my behind my corporate firewall. That firewall is of the extremely zealous type and as part of its virus scan of zip files it checks that the "content of the file matches the content type". This check fails for at least one file in the boost archive, and this has the effect that I am prevented from downloading any of the zip file. Here, it's easy to omit "0" from the test file, but for some templates it won't be so obvious which values to exclude. (Worse, the omitted values may change between platforms!) I played with it a while, and traced it down to behavior of interprocess_condition, I think. I hope I have the correct idea for barrier... Expected behavior: N threads wait on the barrier, at which point, the barrier lets all N threads continue (exiting wait()). One of these threads is indicated as the "leader", by a unique-in-n return value of True. Eh? Actual Behavior: For an interprocess_barrier(n), when the nth thread waits on the barrier, only one thread is successfully released as the "leader." The others are all blocked before exiting interprocess_barrier::wait(), and (by some mutex condition I don't completely understand) they block the leader from re-entering. Deadlock. So I don't have a solution, but I know where the problem is. If you look at all the threads running during the deadlock, the "leader" is trying to get past the m_entry_lock code at the top of interprocess_condition::do_timed_wait(), and the rest are locked on the external_lock.lock() call at the very bottom of the same function. The likelihood I get to this before the weekend is zero, so if someone wants to look at the implementation of interprocess_condition, that would be the place to go.
