[cc'ed from boost-users list] Hello all, This may seem off-topic, but I assure you it isn't. ;) This is an initial probe for ideas about an API for [any] upcoming CGI library submission. Of particular interest: *should GET/POST variables be parsed by default? (not _strictly_ API, but relevant) *how should GET/POST variables be accessed? Like CGI.pm (perl) or python's cgi module? *should cookie variables be accessible just like GET/POST vars, or separately? Should they be lumped together by default with more direct access when needed? Would it be confusing to allow user code to determine behaviour? *should the CGI environment variables each have explicit functions for their access, or should (eg.) a generic cgi::get_env() function be used? *url decoding functions are needed for GET/POST variables. Should url encoding functions also be provided? *how transparent should user code be to internationalization/different character sets? The reason I'm asking such an open-ended question is that I'm assuming lots of people here will have experience using CGI libraries (possibly in other languages, possibly your own) and may have specific ideas about what should or shouldn't move from them into a Boost.CGI library, if one were accepted. Whether or not you see the point of a C++ CGI library, your comments on APIs provided by other languages would still be very much appreciated. Cheers, Darren

We use a lot of separate libraries and compile a lot of code, even for a large compiler farm. Using Boost Build, it is trivial to create and use libraries, including 3rd party libraries, that separately compile. I don't find it at all inconvenient to use static libraries because that build system is designed to work _with_ the object file model that C++ sits on, not around it. I support the idea of header files for convenient use for new users, but for libraries that wrap evil C system headers with nice modern C++, its against the spirit of the task to still inherit all the macro and header ordering hell from the library I'm wrapping. And I don't care about optimising by inlining a call to flush to a slow disk. The header-only approach just doesn't scale like object files -- imagine how slow our builds would be if we had to recompile all the I/O code in our operating system every time we wrote a hello world application because they'd made it header-only. The solution is not to put that code it in a precompiled header and waste memory, but to do what the O/S guys have already done: compile it separately and just expose the facade through the object file interfaces designed specifically for that purpose. Of course template code is a different kettle of fish. I add my vote for the hybrid header/non-header model, where possible. The people who are using build systems are also probably the people who care about build times and macro/header ordering hell. They'll be prepared to invest time to set up library compilation etc. to get what they want. Others working on smaller projects won't care and won't have to deal with the start-up hassles. The official time slot for the quantitative units library review is now over. Please don't let this fact prevent anyone from continuing any discussions you consider useful or illuminating. Even late reviews have some time, since it will take me a bit to digest the review comments enough to produce a thorough review results report. I'll continue to watch for any further posts while I'm working on the report. My thanks to Matthias and Steven for their work on the submission and their work during the review. For example, it has a get_as<T>(name) method that will lexical_cast the parameter to the required type. I have also used the Apache module API, and have written standalone HTTP servers. If I was doing all this from scratch I'd try to do something that would be equally applicable in any of these situations (and also things like FCGI as someone else has suggested). I.e. you want to define an 'HTTP Request' object, which has ways of accessing the form data, not an explicitly 'CGI' object. (There is actually an HttpRequest class in http://svn.chezphil.org/libpbe/trunk/include/HttpRequest.hh, but I haven't used it in combination with form data. I think you can also get content-type information. I'm not sure how best to fit that into the map<string,string> scheme. We really need: class string_with_charset { string s; charset_t charset; }; and then your CGI parameters can be map<string,string_with_charset>. Or something more complex to handle content-types as well. Is there a Boost wrapper for iconv yet? What about MIME handling? I don't think either has been doone; maybe you'd like to do those too.
