Hi, I'm trying to build the boost serialization library for the embedded MIPS platform (Everex RedHat) using the provided mipsel-linux gcc cross compiler on a standard desktop (RedHat 9). I can build it comfortably using gcc on the desktop but nothing works when I use the mipsel-linux gcc cross compiler. [serialization] performance comparison

Shalom I've been comparing results from Boost Serialization (B.Ser) and Ebenezer Enterprises(EE) on Windows XP lately. I've compared saving a 1. set<int>, 2. list<int>, and 3. list<int> and deque<int>. I'm using MSVC8.0, Boost 1.33.1, and software from www.webEbenezer.net to build the tests. I use clock() statements to measure the amount of time used. I've read on this list that there is an issue with using clock() on Windows, but I use it the same way in all the tests so doubt it is an issue here. I use a buffer of 4096 bytes in the EE versions and from what I can tell the Boost versions also use the same size of buffer. (I'm not doing anything to set the buffer size with Boost. It seems to default to 4096.) Each of the containers is filled with 1,000,000 ints. Below are a few lines from one of the Boost tests. ofstream ofs("myfile"); binary_oarchive oa(ofs); clock_t start(clock()); oa << lst; clock_t end(clock()); cout << "That took " << end - start << "\n"; Build times/Exe sizes In each of the tests the B.Ser versions take longer to build and the executables are more than two times bigger in bytes than the EE versions. Run times I ran the B.Ser and EE versions 3 times in a row and threw out the fastest and slowest times and kept the remaining middle time. The following results are from optimized (O2) versions of the tests. set<int> B.Ser ----- 1630 EE --------- 451 In this test the B.Ser version takes 3.6 times longer than the EE version. list<int> B.Ser ----- 1440 EE --------- 271 B.Ser takes 5.3 times longer here. list<int> and deque<int> B.Ser ----- 2894 EE --------- 521 B.Ser takes 5.5 times longer here. I've only done a few tests without optimization. The results from those tests have had higher ratios than those listed above. For example, the non-optimized B.Ser version of the list<int> test is about 8 times slower than the non-optimized EE version. One thing that sticks out in my mind is that the optimized B.Ser version of the list<int> test is 3 times slower than the non-optimized EE version. These results are similar to what we observed on Linux previously. http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2005/11/96497.php I didn't test exactly the same thing in the Windows tests and the Linux tests. Feedback from the Linux tests indicated some objection to commenting out a generated call to flush the buffer we use. I didn't comment out any of the generated code in these Windows tests like I did with Linux. And so the Windows tests fill the buffer and flush it numerous times. I am trying to compile boost 1_33_1 using Borland's 5.8.2 compiler. Despite make files for Builder 6 I still have a poor success rate. For example #include <boost/tokenizer.hpp> gives E2316 is_convertible is not a member of boost - as the first of many errors. Similarly boost/variant.hpp, boost/algorithm/string.hpp and regex etc all fail to compile. I can use some libraries (any, bind, assign, smart_ptrs etc) Anyone any suggestions - as to which version of boost is best to use if nothing else. I have previously used spirit with C++Builder 5, but was hoping to use a more upto date version having upgraded. Thanks for any help / pointers. [bimap] basic review

This is a basic review of the bimap library - limitted to reading the documentation so far as I don't believe it will compile on my primary compiler (Borland) due to a dependency on another unsupported libary (multi_index) My recommendation is 'accept', pending confirmation from other reviewers who can actually compile and use the code. - What is your evaluation of the design? The interface seems clean and composable, with a useful default behaviour and several extension points leading to a wide variety of supported 'advanced' behaviours. In particular, the 'tagging' feature should lead to better self-documenting code, and the ability to plug in different containers as the view for each 'side' of the bimap looks extremely powerful, allowing the user to trade off performance in time and space against required functionality. - What is your evaluation of the implementation? Not evaluated due to unsupported compiler. Strongly encouraged by the re-use of existing boost libraries as the building blocks. While this composition may lead to problems for future boost distributions (witness problems assembling the 1.34 release) this kind of re-use of existing components should lead to stronger libraries in the long run, and should become less of an issue as non-conforming compiler become rarer. - What is your evaluation of the documentation? High quality, with effrective use made of diagrams to illustrate the key points. This serves as a strong introduction to the library, both for its intended purpose and simple applications / tutorial. As I have not been able to test the library in anger, I have not made much use of the reference manual itself. - What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? I have certainly needed a library like this in various projects over the last few years. Lacking such a facility I have code up separate containers and maintained the joiing logic within my applications - a less than perfect solution. - Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? I have not tested, but my installed compiler does not support some of the dependent libraries, notably multi_index. - How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A glance? A quick reading? In-depth study? Around 3 hours studying the documentation. - Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? I would describe myself as competent-but-not-expert, which should probably be the case for the majority of users of this library. I would like to thank Matias for all the hard work in bringing this library up to review standards. In particular the effort in the documentation is appreciated, as this is easily overlooked. I will certainly be looking to extend support to the Borland compiler should this library be accepted. -- AlisdairM

The key to be to implement the components so sending the signal serves as a request, and the slot function returns the requested data. The Boost.Signals combiner mechanism could be used to combine data when it needs to be pulled from multiple components (although the current implementation of signal_link doesn't replicate all of the optional template arguments of boost::signal, that would be an easy add-on). In that case, if the components were reimplemented so that they returned the requested value, the flow would be specified as display >>= database >>= ... >>= video_generator and work as you mention above. I will try to add some examples to the documentation when I get a chance. I think may work better in a lot of cases, but the pushing evaluation might be a little more straightforward to use in cases when there is branching - I'll try to come up with some concrete examples of that too. There may also be a way to convert a push-based signal network into something that simulates pulling. For example, if you take something that works as source>>=processor where the source can be signaled to send data, you can also add a "wrapper" component which, on request, signals source to send data, grabs the output of the processor on the other end, and returns it to the caller. I.e., the complete network would look something like wrapper >>= source >>= processor >>= wrapper, and by executing wrapper.DoYourThing() you would get back the output of the processor.
