Samuel,
Looking through our open issues list on the Track at svn.boost.org, there
are quite a few for Boost.Format that can be dealt with fairly easily:
These two issues:
http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/704
and
http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/1195
appear to be fixed, and have had the relevent test cases added: is it OK to
close these down?
These issues:
585, 980, 1196, 1278 and 1340
relate to suppressing warnings, or have a trivial fix (missing #include
reported in 1340), patches that fix all these issues are below.
Coincidentally this fixes some of the pesky warnings I was getting when
building Boost.Math as well, so I have an incentive to fix these :-)
Is it OK to apply these patches and close down the issues?
Thanks, John Maddock.

Thanks a lot this solved my problem. I am also facing another problem
while building boost. If I build it with the following command :
$bjam --v2 install toolset=vacpp --prefix=$HOME/1_34_0/32
--builddir=$HOME/tmp variant=release runtime-link=static,shared
threading=single,multi --without-python Jamfile.v2
vacpp.compile.c++
bin.v2/libs/wave/build/vacpp/release/link-static/runtime-link-static
/instantiate_cpp_grammar.o
Build seems to me hanging after this. Though I am not facing a same
problem if I specify the every target library to be built with bjam
command.

Gaurav Jain

Rev 41178 contained some bogus characters causing major breakage of the
ptr_container library plus some collateral damage. I just committed a fix
for this. I hope the author doesn't mind me shooting without asking.

Hi Everyone,
Upon my daily chugging along with the very excellent Boost libraries,
I notice that I found myself writing a lot of boilerplate still
granted that we already have excellent libraries: Boost.Iterator,
Boost.Range, some of which aren't really that hard to implement in a
generic library such as Boost. Here's a couple of things that might be
good to ponder about, if people have the time to collaboratively build
these libraries:
* Boost.Range friendly versions of the STL algorithms -- although this
may be coming up in C++0x, seeing a version of std::copy,
std::transform, etc. that work with Boost.Range+Boost.Iterator combo's
will be very welcome. A simple code case is:
std::copy(
boost::make_filter_iterator_range(
is_even()
),
boost::make_function_output_iterator(
my_serializer()
)
);
* SGI's select1st and select2nd generalized -- I'm not sure if you've
found yourself dealing with std::map's and std::list<std::pair<,> >'s
a lot, but I do, and there is a lot of merit in something like the
following:
template <const N>
struct select {
template <class T>
mpl::at_c<T, N>::type operator() (T element) const {
return mpl::at_c<T, N>(element);
};
};
So that you can go ahead and see code like (with the STL adapters from above):
std::transform(
boost::make_range(my_map),
select<1>(),
std::ostream_iterator<my_map::value_type::second_type>(std::cout)
);
If this is already under works, I'd love to find documentation or at
least progress. If this is already done and can be found somewhere,
links would be greatly appreciated. If there's interest, perhaps we
can build this in the sandbox and eventually get it reviewed and
submitted as part of boost?
Have a great day everyone, and keep them excellent libraries coming!

Hi list,
I wrote a set of M4 macros to use the Boost libraries with GNU
Autoconf. I did not find any macro that was reliable enough. If
you're interested, you can have a look at the code:
http://repo.or.cz/w/boost.m4.git
The code is currently under GPLv3+ but if Boost wants to ship this
with Boost itself, and if doing this requires license adaptations,
I'm inclined to use another Free license.
The macros are pretty simple to use, I've tested them on MacOSX (PPC/
Intel), GNU/Linux (various distros, including Debian), Windows (XP,
with MinGW, Cygwin and MSVC). The only problem I ran into is with
Boost.Thread and MSVC:

Hi,
// samp.cpp Boost Library Example
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <cstdlib>
#include <fstream>
#include "boost/filesystem/operations.hpp"
#include "boost/filesystem/path.hpp"
#include "boost/filesystem/exception.hpp"
#include "boost/filesystem/convenience.hpp"
#include "boost/filesystem/fstream.hpp"
using namespace std;
int main( int argc, char* argv[] )
{
if ( argc != 2 )
{
std::cout << "Usage: file_size path\n";
return 1;
}
std::cout << "sizeof(intmax_t) is " << sizeof(boost::intmax_t) <<
'\n';
boost::filesystem::path p( argv[1], boost::filesystem::native );
if ( !boost::filesystem::exists( p ) )
{
std::cout << "not found: " << argv[1] << std::endl;
return 1;
}
if ( boost::filesystem::is_directory( p ) )
{
std::cout << "not a file: " << argv[1] << std::endl;
return 1;
}
std::cout << "size of " << argv[1] << " is " <<
boost::filesystem::file_size( p )
<< std::endl;
return 0;
}
I tried to build the above sample which comes with BOOST File System
library on AIX 5.3. It got failed at link time.
The detail of this activity is as follow:
Compiler Details: XL C/C++ Enterprise Edition V9.0
OS Details:- AIX 5.3
Boost Version:- 1_34_0 (32 bit build)
Command for building the boost libraries:-
$bjam --v2 install toolset=vacpp --prefix=$HOME/1_34_1/32
--builddir=$HOME/tmp variant=release runtime-link=static,shared
threading=single,multi --without-python Jamfile.v2
"samp.cpp":- Compilation Command
$xlC_r -q32 -I/home/1_34_0/include samp.cpp -L/home/1_34_0/lib
-lboost_filesystem-xlc-mt-1_34
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol:
.boost::filesystem::detail::last_write_time_api(
const std::basic_string<char,std::char_traits<char>,std::allocator<char>
>&,int)
ld: 0711-345 Use the -bloadmap or -bnoquiet option to obtain more
information.
I tried to find a solution on google and came across with the following:
http://beta.boost.org/development/tests/trunk/output/IBM_Canada_Ltd-boos
t-bin-v2-libs-filesystem-test-operations_test_dll-test-vacpp-debug.html
Even the regression test result on IBM site indicates that the certain
test case of file system library isn't working:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=2030&context=SSJT9L&uid=swg2
7010184
I am not directly using the
"boost::filesystem::detail::last_write_time_api" in my code, but I am
not sure whether any other API's which I am using in my code, is using
it indirectly.
Can somebody suggest me a work around to resolve this?

Gaurav Jain

There is a logic in python.jam setting suffix for Boost.Python extension
files on HP-UX depending on version of Python interpreter. This logic does
not take into account the fact that on HP-UX PA-RISC, the suffix must be
".sl", regardless of the version of Python interpreter (I myself was not
aware of this fact before yesterday when I saw the results of Boost.Python
tests on HP-UX_pa_risc_gcc with Python 2.5: the tests compile, but fail
at run time).
Attached patch fixes the problem. Verified on HP-UX PA-RISC with Python
2.5. Verified on HP-UX ia64 with Python 2.3 and 2.5 that it does not cause
any regression. The patch relies on bjam setting correctly OSPLAT variable,
so, for bjam compiled with aC++ on HP-UX ia64, the patch for jam.h in
http://lists.boost.org/boost-build/2007/11/17975.php
should be committed first.
Ok to commit?
Thanks,
Boris
