Hello, all ... I'm aware that Boost 1.33.1 and MSVC.NET 2005 have some issues working together, and though i've built a version of our app that uses the latest Boost stuff from CVS (which gets along much better with MSVC.NET 2005), I also need to build a version that uses 1.33.1. Since 1.33.1 gets along well with the MSVC.NET 2003 compiler, we built the boost binaries with that compiler. The problem i'm having right now -- which may be more of a VC problem than a Boost one -- is that i'm trying to use those binaries with MSVC.NET 2005. The 2005 linker is looking for 'liboost_filesystem- vc80-mt-sgd-1_33_1.lib', but since this Boost library was built with MSVC.NET 2003, it's called 'liboost_filesystem-vc80-mt- sgd-1_33_1.lib'. These names are never directly referenced in my project e.g. 2005's linker seems to somehow divine the name of the static Boost library it's to link to ... but I don't know how this is done, or how to change it to look for the 7.1 version. new library proposition : lisp interpreter library

Hello, I want to suggest a new boost library, that could be used to parse and run lisp programs. I think of a way to create at compile time a language interpreter with list syntax, but with only the needed features. It could be used for people who need to run simple scripts from a C++ program, but who don't want to use python. Here is an naive example to illustrate what I mean (I hope it is clear enough by itself) using boost.lisp // we create the lisp interpreter with integer and math operation support lisp::lisp<lisp::with_int, lisp::with_math> mylisp; // we run the lisp program : (+ 10 20) lisp::result res = mylisp.run(lisp::word("+") >> 10 >> 20); std::cout << ret.as<int>() << std::endl; // same thing but from a string res = mylisp.run(lisp::parse("(+ 10 20)") ) It may then be possible to expose C++ functions and classes the same way it has been done for python by the boost.python library. big integer implementation

So does the big integer class use the CPU's carry flag? I'm picturing an implementation where you chop the dataset into int32_t. Then, for the add operation, each piece is composed of a.int32_t[x]+b.int32_t[x]+carry flag of the previous operation. Does that sound right? If so, I'm wondering how you're using the carry flag. Do you get that using assembly code or is there some standard C/C++ command to give you access to that? (Or would somebody mind taking a second and pointing me to the correct location for the code for that?) [shared_array] Conflict with Boost.TR1

Not sure what we can do about this but: #include <boost/shared_array.hpp> doesn't compile when Boost.TR1 is added to the include path. We've been through this before with shared_ptr.hpp and a solution was found, any chance of some magic here as well? The alternative is for all the shared_ptr/shared_array code to include <boost/config/no_tr1/memory.hpp> rather than <memory> directly. In fact the latter option is probably easier to maintain in the long run: the problem is sporadic, hard to reproduce (because it depends upon which headers are included and in which order), and even harder to track down :-( Sorry, but there ain't no easy way.... [lexical_cast] performace patch

Hi, I'm preparing a patch to improve a performance of lexical_cast for certain combinations of types. For example, int to char transformation is 5.9 times faster on my FreeBSD. It could be even faster if not a requirement to add a thousands separator. There are few issues I'd like to sort out before I finish the work. 1. Enums, unlike integral types, are not optimized. I don't want to break a conversion from enums with user-defined operator<<. My firm opinion on this is not to support this edge case and allow optimization. 2. To improve a performance even further, I'd like to add lexical_cast< boost::array<N,char> >(arg) but it would break InputStreamable requirement. 3. A couple of conversion functions are good candidates for .cpp file. I expect a strong resistance to this change. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to change this in default build, I'm asking for new configuration parameter. Something like BOOST_LINK_CORELIB. A user should always link with -lboost_core if BOOST_LINK_CORELIB is defined. Is there interest in parallel versions of <algorithm> functions?

Hey all, This is actually a 2 part interest inquiry: 1. I think there could be some usefulness in parallel versions of the algorithm functions, like for_each and find and unique_copy. 2. In the couple days of r&d I have come up with a class named parallel_task_master which runs a thread function many times over and manages them so you keep your thread counts low and working as hard as possible. So if you have a quad-core cpu it can be specified so you never go over a 4 thread limit. It's also setup so you can keep adding tasks recursively and it will keep the thread count fixed and never deadlock. Because the tasks in parallel_task_master run relatively in order, I think some sort of queue could be made to parallelize functions that needed to return output in a serial form. So it could be used to decode video stream packets for example. This parallel_task_master in itself may have some value alone, but it was written to assist in creating parallel version of the functions in <algorithm>. Some of them are not so parallelizable, some are embarrassingly so. -Clint Levijoki
