[serialization] Is no_tracking from archive_flags working?

Is no_tracking flag of archives supposed to work? It is defined in archive_flags enum, but all the code that tests it in serialization library is commented out. Unfortunately, even if I uncomment all the code, tracking still performed. I need to disable tracking on per-archive basis and this flag would be just the solution, if I could make it work. (the only references to no_tracking flag I found are in iserializer.hpp and oserializer.hpp). thank you, Marcin

[boost.build]: docs for the --layout option

I'v just built boost using 'bjam -sBUILD="release <threading>multi" --layout=system' and I notice that all library names contain an 'mt' tag, which I thought would be suppressed with the --layout=system option. Unfortunately, I'm unable to find documentation for the --layout option, so I can't verify whether I remembered it wrongly. Thus I have two questions: * Where can I find complete documentation for options such as --layout ? (I'm not even sure this is part of bjam, or boost.build, or something entirely different.) * What is the correct use of --layout, and what does it actually do ? Shouldn't 'mt' be suppressed, too ? [serialization] Exported class names

Is there a way to force serialization library only input/output exported class names, not class id numbers? I'm trying to make serialization lib read a file created by a human, and human obviously cannot be supposed to type class-id integers. Best regards, Marcin

Hi all. I just got back from vacation, and, looking at the Sourceforge site, CVS is still not in a great shape. Does Boost have its own recommendations on what to do in this situation? Should we just wait until things get normal once again? Or should we take some extra precaution, like making extra copies of our libraries, etc.? If you define BOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS class boost::detail::sp_counted_base doesn't use a mutex (see http://www.boost.org/libs/smart_ptr/shared_ptr.htm#ThreadSafety) However boost::detail::quick_allocator still uses a mutex as it checks BOOST_HAS_THREADS but not BOOST_SP_DISABLE_THREADS (see http://www.boost.org/boost/detail/quick_allocator.hpp) Is this intentional (as quick_allocator might be used by other classes)? Hi, at the moment, results for borland_5_8_1 and borland_5_8_2b compiler on RC_1_34_0 branch are pretty bad. See: http://engineering.meta-comm.com/boost-regression/CVS-RC_1_34_0/developer/s… Unless a user of borland can step forward and look into those failures, we'll essentially have no support for those toolsets in 1.34. fixed_point math request

Hello. Fixed point computation appears too often on an embedded systems, but it seems that implement bug free class too complex (i found a lots of implementations in internet but all of them have 2 issues - either they have an computations bugs and precision loss either they not template). That's why it will be good if in Boost appear standart fixed point library. I assume, that interface should look like these: template< typename T, int N > class fixed_point { .. }; where T - set for us bitness of the variable, and signed/unsigned flag, and N - a number of bits for fractional part of number. of course, for T - best to use types like: uint32, int32 and so on.. or change interface on something like: template< bool signed, int number_all_bits, int number_fract_bits > class fixed_point { .. };

Consider this code: struct LibraryClass { Object* create_object(); void push_in_stack_object(Object* ); }; In this case library user meets with ambiguity, should him destroy this pointers after using these methods, or not. I just thought out some very simple and small wrapper class, and name it intact_ptr<> which the only way to say library user, that this pointer user should not delete after using (in case of create_object method) or library will not own the pointer (in push_in_stack_object method). It seems that sometimes it's useful. Also this class can decide another pointer related problems, like unwantable increment/decrement operations, pointers equality comparing and so on.

[hash] Return type of fpclassify on gcc 4.0.1 on Darwin/OS X

The hash floating point tests are failing on Darwin. Looking at the error (http://tinyurl.com/qoehb) it appears that when called with a long double, fpclassify is returning a value that isn't FP_ZERO, FP_INFINITE, FP_NAN, FP_NORMAL or FP_SUBNORMAL. But according to: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man3/fpc… those are the only values that it can return. I've been reading up about OS X's long double implementation but can't find any mention of fpclassify. So maybe I just shouldn't use it on this platform. Please can someone with access to the platform look into this? Daniel

[Filesystem] Querying a card reader can throw on Windows

Hi, Beman. If I understand correctly, the idiom to check whether a directory exists using Boost.Filesystem is if (fs::exists(path) && fs::is_directory(path)) Under normal conditions the code above shouldn't throw, right? One of our users reports that this code does, however, throw when it is used on Windows to query a card reader that has a drive letter J: assigned to it. Below is a diagnostic program that attempts to query a nonexistent "J:\foo". Executing it, our user finds: 1. If no drive is associated with J: then the program outputs nothing. 2. If an empty drive is associated with J: Exception caught: boost::filesystem::is_directory: "J:\foo": The device is not ready. Assertion failed: false file ekkehart.cpp, line 40 3. If the drive contains a disk the program outputs nothing. He goes on to say: The problem described disappears if I do one of the following: 1. Reassign another letter to the smart cars slot (such that J: is not assigned to any drive) 2. Reassign J: to a used slot (in my case the compact flash slot) and insert a card. 3. Remove the card reader. Conclusion: You should have either no drive assigned to J: or a drive with an inserted medium. This is with the current release of Boost, 1.33.1. Is this a known problem (is there a workaround) or have we stumbled upon a bug? [parameter] Lack of safety?

There are cases where boost::parameter can translate its arguments to the wrong arguments at the function implementation side. I'm hoping that I'm doing something wrong, but it seems like a problem with the parameter library. The parameter library suggests creating global variables named with the names of the arguments to your function. If you have an inner scope at the calling site with a variable with the same name, things don't work. I'm okay if this simply results in a compiler error, but in some fairly simple cases, it can correctly compile to the wrong call to the implemented function. Foo( y = 8 ); ... } Notice that Bar has an argument with the same name as one of the global variables declared with BOOST_PARAMETER_KEYWORD. I can't think of a general solution to this problem. It might be better to use the call syntax "Foo( y( 8 ) );" instead because overloaded function call operators are less common than assignment operators. This does not remove the danger, however; it only disguises it better. Another solution might be to put all of the global variables in their own named namespace so that one has to qualify their use. E.g.: "Foo( arg::y = 8 );". Some other naming convention might also mitigate the problem. Note that my example looks fairly artificial because I've simplified it so much, but it's not as unlikely as it looks. The global variable is called something that meaningfully describes the argument. It is not so unlikely for a caller to have a variable with the same purpose in the context of the call, and it is not unlikely for that to have the same name. Hopefully I'm missing something important here. Please correct my misunderstanding if that's true. -Fred Bertsch
