Simple C arrays with the restrict keyword work well but all numeric operations have to be hand coded. std::valarray has convenient syntax but the user must pay for a memory allocation at each object creation which will dominate the runtime for smaller sized arrays. My own motivation is operations in space-time where I am repetitively doing complex numeric operations in 3 and 4 tuple space. Another example off of the top of my head could be those doing graphics who always use 4x4 matrices. What I am proposing is an interface that mirrors std::valarray that has been adjusted for those whose sizes are constant and known at compile-time. By keeping the interface as close to std::valarray as possible, I believe it makes it easy for users to adopt when appropriate and it maintains the restrictions placed on std::valarray to reduce aliasing for implementors as well as allowing for the elimination of temporaries (expression templates). The interface is what I am placing the most emphasis on. The claimed performance increase over std::valarray it solely due to the elimination of the memory allocation that std::valarray has to perform during object construction. (This is not an implementation trick, just a direct result of the interface.) The potential performance increase comes from various places most notably from the fact that certain compilers will unroll loops when the number of iterations are known at compile time (which is the case here). My particular implementation uses full expression templates to eliminate temporaries in the same manner as gcc's std::valarray. > I'd LOVE to see something like MacSTL developed for Boost. pqs_3_0_5 physical quantities now in the vault

Hi all, pqs_3_0_5 is now available in the "Physical Quantities Units" directory in the boost vault. pqs_3_0_5 hs been formally tested (including <libs/pqs/ test> and <libs/pqs/examples> ) on VC7.1, VC8, gcc3.2, gcc4.01. I hope to request a formal review of pqs shortly. All comments welcome The major change in pqs_3_0_5 is that first draft documentation has been added. Below is a copy of the index in the pqs_3_0_5 documentation. Interest in static-sized valarray

Hello, I am trying to guage interest in a fixed sized version of valarray. I frequently found myself using small(-ish) compile-time known sized numeric arrays that don't justify the overhead of operator new in std::valarray but needed the math interface that valarray provided. I wrote a static-sized version of valarray for this purpose. It is modeled after std::valarray and implements about 90% of valarray's interface (obviously resizing is not included, neither is gslice due to the result not being known at compile time). Examples of it's use are: float _v[10] = {...}; size_t _i[5] = {...}; cvalarray<float,10> v1(_v); cvalarray<float,5> v2 = v1[cslice<0,5,2>()]; v1[cslice<0,3,3>()] = 0.0f; cvalarray<size_t,5> ind(_i); cvalarray<float,5> cvalB = v1[ind]; v2 *= (v2 + v1) / 2.0; //all of the usual math ops I have a complete implementation that models std::valarray in every possible way (with compile-time known limitations) including expression-template support for the numeric ops. My testing indicates a decent performance increase over gcc4's valarray for small number of elements <1000. If anyone has any interest, I'll put together some docs and throw it in the sandbox. [statechart] Ready for addition to main CVS

Dear Boosters I believe I have addressed all the important issues that were reported during formal review of the Boost.Statechart library (then proposed as boost::fsm). Although there's still a lot to do, I think that the current version is stable enough to be added to the main CVS. All reviewers (and anyone else interested) are invited to verify that the issues that have been put forth have been taken care of appropriately: http://boost-sandbox.sf.net/libs/statechart Given Thomas Witt's cutoff date for additions of new libraries (February 8th) and the roughly one week needed to move the statechart directories from the sandbox CVS to the main CVS (can only be done by source forge staff), I must ask people to come forward with their questions/concerns before February 1st. Test at 13 Jan 2006 MS moans in basic_cstring.hpp at value_type operator[]( size_type index ) const; value_type at( size_type index ) const; "C4180 qualifier applied to function type has no meaning; ignored" A qualifier, such as const, is applied to a function type defined by typedef. Example Copy Code// C4180.cpp // compile with: /W1 /c typedef int *FuncType(void); // the const qualifier cannot be applied to the function type FuncType const FuncType f; // C4180 Does this mean it wants a typedef const_value_type instead? Meanwhile, I have added to suppress_warnings.hpp # pragma warning(disable: 4224) // nonstandard extension used : formal parameter 'tm' was previously defined as a type tm needs renaming? # pragma warning(disable: 4180) // qualifier applied to function type has no meaning; ignored Suppresses the clutter. (And I feel strongly that although trivial, Boost should try hard to avoid spurious warnings like these for those whose Standards demand they use the pickiest warning level). (Speaking boost-wide, I note that warning C4127: conditional expression is constant is very common and I cannot conceive of when it could possibly be helpful.
