[range] How to extend Boost.Range?

While investigating test failures with Boost.Foreach, I found this in Boost.Range's documentation for extending the Range library: http://boost.org/libs/range/doc/boost_range.html#minimal_interface This seems to suggest that the only way to extend Boost.Range is for user-defined types to implement a std-container-like interface, with nested iterator and const_iterator types, and begin() and end() member functions. Is this really the intention? I seem to recall some discussion about a more accomodating extensibility mechanism that makes allowances for non-std-container-like user-defined range types. In fact, Boost.Foreach assumes such an interface, with disastrous results. What became of Boost.Range's extensibility mechanism? [preprocessor][dmc] improved dmc conformance

Paul, The newest Digital Mars compiler (8.45) appears to pass all the preprocessor tests when the dmc workarounds are removed. (Specifically, I set BOOST_PP_CONFIG_FLAGS() to (0x0000) and removed the 'dmc' directories for good measure; the result is the same if I set BOOST_PP_CONFIG_FLAGS() to BOOST_PP_CONFIG_STRICT()). If you can verify this, you might want to consider removing the workarounds. Since hardly any of Boost compiles on dmc right now (PP being one of the exceptions), there shouldn't be backward compatibility problems. Jonathan

There's been a small discussion and so far every participant agreed that it is a nice thing to have. This is a very small addition, just a few lines. Is there a regular review needed? Marcin

integer_traits and alpha / gcc bug?

I ran into a problem including boost/integer_traits.hpp (from boost 1.33.0) on an alpha / tru64 system with gcc 3.3.1. The error produced was: boost/integer_traits.hpp:112:2: #error No WCHAR_MIN and WCHAR_MAX present, please adjust integer_traits<> for your compiler. Looking at the file, I see that integer_traits.hpp considers a number of different platform / compiler possibilities, but that alpha / gcc is not on the list. Has anyone else run into this problem? Anyone have any ideas how integer_traits.hpp should handle this configuration? [thread][wave] and [1.33.1]

I think the regressions for thread and wave libs in the 1.33.1 branch can be removed quite easily if the Jamfiles for these tests stopped using <runtime-link>static. Anyone know if there was/is any rationale for this? The problem is that some platforms either don't have a static-runtime option, or it may be "optional". For example these tests all fail on my Mandriva Linux box because there are no static runtimes supplied. Other Linux versions may supply them, but as can be seen from the regression test results they sometimes cause more trouble that they are worth. BTW, just because the Boost libs are linked statically this does not imply that the runtime must be statically linked (just in case that was causing any confusion). Thanks, John.

building boost.threads

I need to build the threads library for VC 8.0, and I really don't know where to start. According to the documentation boost.build does not even support this compiler. Can someone explain what steps I would need to take to compile this library, or if it would be easier just send me debug and release builds of the static link lib? Thanks in advance. -Jason

[Review] [xpressive]

I'd reviewed xpressive sometime last week. Since then, I'd found a place where xpressive might provide a performance improvement over a Spirit grammar that I've been using. I worked for a few days on trying to use xpressive to replace the Spirit grammar. Unfortunately, I ran out of time and wasn't able to finish it. Even so, my experiences might be of interest here. First, I should point out that I really like the library. I ran into a few glitches, but Eric has been able to fix them pretty quickly. It doesn't look as though there are any serious problems with the library. By far the most serious problems that I ran into involved the limitations of the Microsoft VC7.1 compiler. It really doesn't want to see anything harder than a simple static xpressive expression. This is a serious limitation of the library until VC8 comes out for me. Eric says that gcc 3.3+ is a lot better, though I didn't try that. He also says that the VC8 team used an early version of the library for testing, so it might get better at some point. Note that the VC8 beta does at least as well as VC7.1; I can say this with some certainty since my code was pushing VC7.1 pretty close to its limit. I can't really give the performance numbers that I was hoping for since I didn't have time to optimize my xpressive code for anything other than compiling under VC7.1. Once I get to start using the library under a compiler that works better, I'm going to really enjoy playing with xpressive. If nothing else, it seems like a good model to write template meta-programming with. I frequently got intelligible error messages out of it! (Most frequently this involved a Microsoft internal compiler error that pointed to the correct static assert. Though a bit strange, this is actually better than what boost static assert is supposed to do.) Since I now have significantly more experience with the library, I should explicitly reaffirm my support for adding xpressive to boost. -Fred
