I'm having these errors with serialization with the cvs of today ..\..\..\..\boost\boost\archive\detail\oserializer.hpp(488) : error C2375: 'boost::archive::detail::instantiate_pointer_oserializer' : redefinition; different linkage ..\..\..\..\boost\boost\serialization\export.hpp(63) : see declaration of 'boost::archive::detail::instantiate_pointer_oserializer' ..\..\..\..\boost\boost\archive\detail\iserializer.hpp(503) : error C2375: 'boost::archive::detail::instantiate_pointer_iserializer' : redefinition; different linkage ..\..\..\..\boost\boost\serialization\export.hpp(58) : see declaration of 'boost::archive::detail::instantiate_pointer_iserializer' Was working correct with the cvs from two weeks ago. shared_ptr question

Hi, I'm rather new to shared_ptr and I'm not very experienced in programmer with C++ but have to do it anyway. My problem is this: I have 3 .cpp files, e.g. Master.cpp, Client.cpp and Satellite.cpp. Originally, Master.cpp is the only .cpp file, and uses auto_ptr to enable writing and reading from an interface. Like this: { .... auto_ptr<FtInterface> fti (ftGetIfFromFactory(device, connection)); fti->getIfInfo(ii); IfOutputs out; // to set interface outputs (ctor clears everything to 0) IfInputs inp; // to be read from interface fti->writeAndReadAllData(out, inp); ... } This works well with every action taking place in this file. Now, as said I have those 3 .cpp files. Master.cpp sends an argument to Client.cpp and Client.cpp sends it to Satellite.cpp. Satellite.cpp reads from the interface, and sends it back via Client.cpp to Master.cpp. I can't use auto_ptr with this and from the Boost-documentation I can't figure out exactly how to use shared_ptr for this. Can somebody please help me out? I hope I explained my problem clear enough. Thank you for helping out. H.

Effective C++, 3rd Ed, Item 55: Familiarize yourself with Boost

Boosters looking for more ammunition when try to convince their organizations that it is OK to use Boost might want to refer to the 3rd edition of Scott Meyers' Effective C++. Because Scott is well-known and isn't in any way affiliated with Boost, his recommendation may carry a lot of weight. Item 55, "Familiarize yourself with Boost" devotes four pages to Boost, including our culture and a mention of various Boost libraries and library categories. I think we ought to add a prominent mention of this to the Boost home page. --Beman

sonames under BSD systems (possible fix)

Hi all, As seen in http://lists.boost.org/boost/2005/06/28717.php it seems that the Boost libraries are not properly linked under, at least, NetBSD. The problem arises when using --layout=system (although it will probably happen w/o it, too), as the build process only creates .a and .so files for each of the libraries being built, but it fails to create .so.1.32.0 files (as one could expect). Trying the same thing under Linux results in the correct files being created (i.e., three for each library). One of the replies said that it may be because sonames are not being used under NetBSD, and that was correct. The attached patch fixes it; I'm not sure it's correct, though I hope it is. Note that it solves this issue under Dragonfly, FreeBSD and NetBSD, all of which support sonames. Thanks, -- Julio M. For the purpose of this documentation, these types are collectively referred to as function types (this differs from the standard definition and redefines the term from a programmer's perspective to refer to the most common types that involve functions). The classes introduced by this library shall conform to the concepts of the Boost Metaprogramming library (MPL). The Function Types library enables the user to: * test an arbitrary type for being a function type of specified kind, * inspect properties of function types, * view and modify sub types of an encapsulated function type with MPL Sequence operations, and * synthesize function types. This library supports variadic functions and can be configured to support non-default calling conventions.
