I've been working with boost::options, and these is one gaping hole in it, that I have noticed. There is no way to use a custom converter in the default po::typed_value class. This is such a flaw, I've actually copied typed_value, and created one that accepts a function of parser(), which you would supply a boost::function2<void, boost::any &, const std::vector<std::basic_string<charT> > & Why would I want to do this? I have created a bunch of generic converters that can be used for a number of things, from validation to translation. The ones I have so far are: validate_oneof - used as: value<T>()->parser(validate_oneof<T>(first_val) + second_val + third_val + fourth_val)) This will then ensure that the value supplied is one of these values (obviously validate_oneof is a class with an overridden operator+ and an operator() for calling). validate_range - used as: value<T>()->parser(validate_range<T>(first, last)) This will ensure that the value lies between these values. You might be able to achieve the same with notifiers, I don't know, but from here, it gets more interesting. validate_mapped - used as: value<T>()->parser(validate_mapped<K,T>(first_key, first_val) + std::make_pair(second_key, second_val) + std::make_pair(third_key, third_val)) This will then allow you to specify a value of one type, but have a different type stored. This is particularly useful to allow, say: LogLevel = info and then have that actually stored as an in (say, 5) in the values. I have others to do syntax validation too, so say validate_ipaddr which will ensure that it is a valid IP address before storing it, and so on. Again, I'm not sure how much notifiers would do this too. But also consider the following. A 'validator' that allows you to take an IP address as text, verify it is a valid IP address (hell, if someone wanted to add logic, verify it is within a certain range if they wanted to), and then store it as an in_addr_t. Or even better, a 'validator' that checks to see if 'http://' is prefixed to a web address, and either removes it or adds it, depending on what you need. A notifier might be able to catch bad values, but not change types or correct the data. And all in all, the change to do this was minimal, apart from adding the 'parser' function, my xparse function is simply: if (m_parser) m_parser(value_store, new_tokens) else validate(value_store, new_tokens, (T*) 0, 0); Feel free to e-mail me if you want my code, or want me to post it. -- PreZ :) Founder. I have a workaround for the purpose of my project, I am currently compiling xml_iarchive.cpp and xml_oarchive.cpp into my project and linking into libboost_serialization.lib to get everything else. This is working, but isn't an optimal solution. Honestly, I'm not sure why I can wstring working in the demo code, but not my code. It might have to do with wchar_t not being set as a built-in type, but I've been unable to validate that since my codebase won't work that way. Thanks for all the help, Jared

Turns out it was the difference between treating wchar_t as a default type or not. When I modified the build process for the library to not treat wchar_t as a default type, everything linked clean. Once again, thanks for all the help. Jared

Solaris/gcc integer_traits #error on build

I ran into a problem with the integer_traits.hpp file in the boost subdirectory at build time, specifically while trying to build the libboost_python-* files. It seems to be the same problem that was earlier encountered here: http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost/msg76535.php I downloaded the patched version of integer_traits.hpp from CVS, but the problem persisted. I checked the #if statement beginning on line 87 of the newer version of the file, and there didn't appear to be any case for Solaris. I was building on a Solaris 8 machine, using gcc 3.3.2. I am currently in the unenviable position of BACK PORTING code that uses boost from vc7.1 to vc7. The first thing to go was lambda. The funny thing is about 6 months ago I was thinking it seemed silly to keep things like boost.bind around. But now I am using that heavily instead of lambda. My situation is we have 1.7 million lines of code we are trying to upgrade. Unfortunately we have about 40-50 people who have had vc7 purchased for them by the project and we do not have the budget to upgrade compilers. Vc7 is, in my opinion probably (unfortunately) still a compiler many folks are stuck with.

As I see it, hash<> is part of TR1 future <functional>, so the naming I propose looks more consistent. 2. The header includes <set> and <map>, which can be quite heavy if the user has no intention to use the corresponding hash_value overloads. Alas, I don't know of any way to avoid the inclusions, since a forward declaration of these containers can fail due to the freedom stdlib implementers have to add additional template parameters to those specified by the standard. Any idea? I'll soon bundle your header with a preview of hashed indices for Boost.MultiIndex, probably the next week. Are you planning to improve the hashing algorithms (in particular for strings, which I guess it's the most improvable part)? If I could have this in time for Boost 1.33 I'd be extremely grateful, since Boost.MultiIndex hashed indices (practically finished now) need a hash<>, and I don't think it is convenient that each library ships with its own version.
