Q. Is it possible to isolate a core thread execution model from the various libs currently on offer, and re-express those libs in terms of the core model? The core service amonst these libraries is "Execution of abstracted tasks in an appropriate threads" Task seems to be in common expressible as a function object Major extension/variations include - waitable return object (future/threader) vs. ad hoc reverse direction task execution (asio::demuxer/defer) - threads resources shareable amongst different tasks (threader/demuxer/defer) vs thread created per action (futures, also possible with defer & threader styles) - some guarantees given about which thread will do a given task (threader/demuxer/defer) vs guaranteed new thread (future) - able to extend callbacks into windows message pump (defer) I think the different return styles can be unified to some extent by wrapper objects which operate like a void(void) function for exection, but which package up a wrapped function with return values and expose a wait() method on which the caller can wait for the result (essentially what threader/futures do) Futures autocreation of threads for each task is clearly implementable on top of any of the others, though perhaps not as efficiently. Guarantees about how a task will execute may not matter to all applications but it critical to others. The asio::demuxer gives a guarantee that the task will execute in a thread that has called demuxer::run, which may include the thread which is doing the requesting - implication being that the call may take place immediately. This is an excellent performance optimisation, but the programmer may require stronger guarantees, perhaps against that very optimisation. Vague Conclusions. I think its doable, I'd like to use such a boost library, i'd like it to be flexible in terms of strategising the thread allocation, i'd like to be able to use different models of thread allocator to solve different problems from distruting load amongst threads to solving thread deadlock issues to integrating my networking library with my GUI application. I'd prefer it if someone smarter than myself could write the code, but if they'd keep my requirements in mind while doing so (and treat my defer submission as an extension to those requirements) then i'd be happy. When's 1.33.1 being merged into HEAD? (a.k.a. My ancient history got obliterated!)

I noticed that 1.33.1 was just posted. I noticed that the 1.33.1 notes were posted on our front web page <http://www.boost.org> and the old 1.33.0 notes were moved to the version history page <http://www.boost.org/more/version_history.html>. Then I scrolled to the bottom and noticed that all the extra entries of ancient Boost history I added were gone! I realized what happened: I put my entries on the HEAD branch then uploaded them to our web space. The 1.33.1 manager did the same thing, but those files are based off the older 1.33.x branch. Any changes made since that branch (that were uploaded) got paved over on the web site. Looking at the CVS history for the page <http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/boost/boost/more/version_history.html ?rev=1.9&view=log>, you can see that my last change (r1.9) is the latest on the HEAD, but some of the 1.33.x changes (r1.4.2.x) are newer. Math/Quaternions compile problem in VC++6

My Visual Studio 6 requires the trigonometry functions sin, cos, etc. to be prefixed with :: in the quaternion.hpp, otherwise I get: " ...\boost-1_32\boost\math\quaternion.hpp(1686) : error C2784: 'class boost::math::quaternion<T> __cdecl boost::math::sin(const class boost::math::quaternion<T> &)' : could not deduce template argument for 'const class boost::math::quaternion<T> &' from 'const double' ...\main.cpp(112) : see reference to function template instantiation 'class boost::math::quaternion<double> __cdecl boost::math::spherical(const double &,const double &,const double &,const double &)' being compiled " I'm using a quaternion<double> here. Changing the line T d = sin(phi2); into T d = ::sin(phi2); fixes the problem (for that line). Grassmann point

Its available as "grassmann_point.zip" in the (new) "Graphical" directory. There is a file test.cpp in the "boost/lib/graphical/examples" directory Any comments welcome. ( Mathematicians help would be appreciated to verify whether the concepts are correct too. My grasp of grassmann spaces etc is shakey to say the least) . Boost 1.33.1, the latest version of peer-reviewed, portable C++ libraries, has been released. This is a bug fix release addressing many small problems with the 1.33.0 release. It is a recommended upgrade for all users of Boost 1.33.0. Boost is available at http://www.boost.org Updated Libraries include: * Any Library: Cast to reference types introduced in 1.33.0 is now documented on any_cast documentation page. * Config Library: Don't undef BOOST_LIB_TOOLSET after use. * Boost.Python: o The build now assumes Python 2.4 by default, rather than 2.2 o Support Python that's built without Unicode support o Support for wrapping classes with overloaded address-of (&) operators * Smart Pointer Library: Fixed problems under Metrowerks CodeWarrior on PowerPC (Mac OS X) with inlining on, GNU GCC on PowerPC 64. * Regex Library: Fixed the supplied makefiles, and other small compiler specific changes. Refer to the regex history page for more information on these and other small changes. * Iostreams Library: Improved the interface for accessing a chain's components, added is_open members to the file and file descriptor devices, fixed memory-mapped files on Windows, and made minor changes to the documentation. * Functional/Hash Library: Fixed the points example. * Multi-index Containers Library: Fixed a problem with multithreaded code, and other minor changes. Refer to the library release notes for further details. * Graph Library: o Fixed a problem with the relaxed heap on x86 Linux (fixes bug in dijkstra_shortest_paths). o Fixed problems with cuthill_mckee_ordering and king_ordering producing no results. o Added color_map parameter to dijkstra_shortest_paths. * Signals Library: Fixed problems with the use of Signals across shared library boundaries. * Thread library: read_write_mutex has been removed due to problems with deadlocks. * Wave library (V1.2.1) Fixed a couple of problems, refer to the change log for further details. Supported Compilers Boost is tested on a wide range of compilers and platforms. Since Boost libraries rely on modern C++ features not available in all compilers, not all Boost libraries will work with every compiler. The following compilers and platforms have been extensively tested with Boost, although many other compilers and platforms will work as well. For more information, see the regression test results. New for this release: Support for building with the newest STLport-5.0 was added. The support includes building with MinGW Runtime 3.8 plus STLport-5.0 improved to support wide character operations. Apple GCC 4.0, HP Tru64 C++, and Microsoft Visual C++ 8.0 are supported platforms. We have added an experimental autoconf-like configure script for Unix-like systems: run configure --help for more information. * Apple GCC 3.3, 4.0 on Mac OS X. * Borland C++ 5.6.4 on Windows. * GNU C++ 2.95.3 (with and without STLport), 3.2.x., 3.3.x, 3.4.x, 4.0.x on Windows, Linux and Solaris. * HP C++ for Tru64 UNIX 7.1. * Intel C++ 8.1, 9.0 on Windows, Linux. * Metrowerks CodeWarrior 8.3, 9.4, 9.5 on Mac OS X and Windows. * Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (sp5, with and without STLport), 7.0, 7.1, 8.0. Note: Boost does not support the non-standard "Safe" C++ Library shipping with Visual C++ 8.0, which may result in many spurious warnings from Boost headers and other standards- conforming C++ code. How do we handle incompatible versions?

Just glancing at the serialization documentation.... The (member) function templates for serialize or save & load include an argument for the version. Where does this number come from? I guess the core routines insert a zero for that argument, unless overridden by a BOOST_CLASS_VERSION statement with a new number for a particular type. A type can conditionally change how it serializes based on the given version number. The examples show how to conditionally work with older versions in a backwards compatible fashion. But how should a serialization routine act if the version number given is too high? There doesn't seem to be a special exception for it.
