BoostCon conference calls?

Does anyone know if the Aspen Center for Physics makes any conference calling facilities available to BoostCon? Because I was wondering, if special interest groups want to get together informally and have people call in and participate from wherever they are, could we do it? I know Joel de Guzman is talking about getting the Spirit group together informally for "feedback, comments and in general, discussion about what's to come" and it would be great if people not at the conference could participate. I don't know how well this would work and I don't know if Joel would like it (pizza and beer were mentioned, which don't transmit well over the phone lines), but it seems like BoostCon is a great opportunity for groups to get together and brainstorm about the future. See you at BoostCon! Dave Jenkins

I asked the program committee...it sounds like the answer is no. But there will be a wireless network so someone could set up Skype or something similar. So it would be great if people skilled in setting up this sort of computer-based channel could help out... Jeff

That's too bad. I was hoping that they would have a nice conference room
for talking with physicists from around the world that we could use (for
FREE). And I imagined using a Wiki site for groups to reserve time slots,
without putting a burden on the volunteer organizers who are probably
exhausted from putting this conference together. Oh, well.
If anyone has other ideas for involving people from around the world, I
think it would be a Good Thing. I don't know anything about Skype
unfortunately.

There are 'alcoves' which are likely suitable for this purpose. I suspect there are other places as well.

Feel free...the Boost wiki is open to use. Honestly, I doubt you'll actually need to setup a schedule....you'll probably just be able to do it when you feel like it.

There's always a cell phone with speaker capabilities. Or maybe an chat? IRC? Jeff

Thanks, Jeff. I'll volunteer to setup a page on the Boost wiki. Then it will be up to Boost authors to volunteer their time to answer questions and get comments on their libraries. Or for users to express an interest in talking to a Boost author. But how can authors avoid making their cell phone numbers public? That was the advantage of a conference room with a public telephone number. Any ideas? Dave J.

Hi Dave - I think the 'scope of your proposal' wasn't clear to me in your first email. So, if I understand what you are saying you are thinking of having a little 'birds of a feather' session for each of attending boost authors to answer questions about their libraries. If that's right, it sounds like an awesome idea to me. Obviously we are going to have a bunch of library authors running around at BoostCon, so it's a good time to do this. Maybe we would have these at some regular time like during lunch, breakfast, or after the main sessions are done for the day? Then you could have the pick of the rooms... If I've got it right (please confirm), let me run it by the program committee...maybe we can help getting it organized a bit. We have a list of all the attendees...so that would help jumpstart which authors are there. And maybe if we get some firm times we can get them on the official schedule...

Use your cell phone ;-) Seriously, though, I know we are going to find someone that knows how to solve this problem... Jeff

Jeff,
That's exactly what I was thinking. Glad you like the idea. Normally, I
think it's difficult for Boost users and authors to actually talk to each
other. Email is used mostly to solve problems, not for general discussion.
So I thought if we had a room with a speakerphone, it would be a great
opportunity to get people together, especially people who can't travel to
the conference. Sorry if my original proposal wasn't clear. Even if they
don't have questions, users could express their appreciation to the Boost
authors who have written these libraries.
See you at BoostCon,
Dave Jenkins

It's ok, I thought you were just talking about Spirit...

Ok, let me see what the program committee thinks... Jeff
