I haven't tried spirit, but I used to have similar problems when I was using gcc with the optimization turned on. I have been compiliing heavy templated code. I have one case, that compiles in a about a minute without optimization on gcc and vc7.0, but it takes over an hour with optimization turned on on gcc ... This seems as a problem with gcc.
