Thanks for asking!

While constructing the short, self-contained program I realized that I have made a stupid mistake: in my email I wrote getline(in, line) but in my program I had getline(file, line), where "file" was the ifstream and "in" was the filtering_stream.

So switching from filtering_streambuf to filtering_stream indeed does the job, thank you very much again for the hint!
