There should be no difference. The script C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\bin\vcvars32.bat calls that one in \Common7\Tools directory: "%VS80COMNTOOLS%vsvars32.bat" I encountered the same problem. As I revealed recently, it must be a bug related to vc-8_0 toolset in current stable 1.33 release. Try to checkout Boost from CVS and then it should work well.
