Update: I found a template named "boost::msm::back::is_composite_state" which can be used to select a visitor type based on whether there are child states or not. With this useful metafunction, it was quite easy to make a recursive function that iterates over all states. So unless there are some major drawbacks with this method there is no need for any more specific examples.
