There is a uuid library available in the boost sandbox. I seem to remember it having a bug on Windows, but it was quick to fix.

I checked out the whole sandbox from svn (svn url https://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/sandbox), but I'm having trouble finding a uuid library there. what would be the name of the library? Akos
