that would be nice ... it would be even nicer, if you could suggest to make use of hardware instructions ... i am currently using this gcc-centric code [1] ...

The GSOC project will make first a portable implementation. Once the portable implementation is finished, other architecture dependent implementation could be benchmarked and provided if they give better performances.
