read (or async_read) free function can read the data to asio::streambuf
(See ASIO manual for details:
http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/boost_asio.html)
Then you can process it using standard stl methods, like in this example:

Is it possible to directly read into a string using boost::asio::read? Or do I have to first read into an array of char, then assign it to the string?
