To elaborate on Ion's remarks, ALL virtual memory in user space in windows is backed by the page file, and ALL file I/O is memory mapped, the only difference being virtual memory is backed by the page file rather than a specific named file in the file system. Your inter process memory is just as likely to be in physical memory as any other data. So most likely this is not the cause of your performance issue, unless memory is so tight that your entire process working set is continually thrashing. [zlib] Compression intended use

Hello, This is probably out of scope with boost's intended usage pattern, but I'll ask anyhow. I've got a package of output files that I want to bundle, tarball, gzip, or however I can manage to compress them. I see there is the zlib usage, but methinks that is more for in-memory compression. Not sure exactly how that translates to folders-/files-oriented compression I am thinking of. Thank you... Regards, Michael Powell

Below is a little app that illustrates the issue (Can also be found here: http://pastebin.com/k8jRN64R) I've removed most error handling/etc. for illustration purposes. The program expects a "input.txt" to be present in the same directory it's run from. Note again that this works *most* of the time, but depending on the input file, will crash. Boost.Variant broke in 1.54?

Dear all, I get a compilation error with Boost.Variant (which compiles fine on previous releases) with vstudio 2010 when a function returns a const Boost.Variant, e.g.: typedef boost::variant<int, double> Variant; const Variant GetVar() { return Variant(); } void TestVariantDnc() { const Variant var = GetVar(); } This gives error C2666 ('boost::variant<T0_,T1>::convert_construct' : 3 overloads have similar conversions'). Shall a file a ticket or do I something wrong?

Releasing Boost Dependency Analyzer 1.1

Hello boost community, a short notice that I just have released the version 1.1 of my dependency analyzing tool for boost. For now I have only managed to get a proper Windows Version, Linux Version will follow later. New Features: Configuration - the tool remembers the path to bcp now - select the source for libraries - maintainers.txt - libraries.xml - 2 filter options - filter libraries by name - filter edges by type, for now its header, source/lib, test and documentation. Export: - Export CSV File which has all libraries and the number of dependencies (sorted) libraries.xml - this is now a optional source for the library names Some feedback: libraries.xml as a lib name source is nice, but not quite perfect. I've seen different results from maintainers.txt and libraries.xml. As maintainers.txt also libraries.xml contains duplicates, some of its library names don't fit the expectation of bcp, so I applied some fixes for this in my program. The Dependency filter is yet not perfect, especially in detection. Compiling Boost 1.54.0 for the iOS simulator (6.1) on OS X 10.8.4

Hello, I am new to the Boost mailing list so please let me know if this is not the appropriate place to discuss my problem. I have successfully managed to compile several of the Boost libraries (regex, filesystem, thread) and create a framework for use with OS X, iOS, and the iOS simulator using this script: https://github.com/wuhao5/boost/blob/188e905626dbd522f65950102ed0c8ce77cb28… on Peter Goodliffe's work here: http://goodliffe.blogspot.com/2010/09/building-boost-framework-for-ios-ipho… Boost 1.53.0 using clang and linking against libc++. The script fails when compiling for the iOS simulator with Boost 1.54.0 with the following error:/bin/sh: line 1: -ftemplate-depth-128: command not found. I did quite a bit of digging and here is what I know: * In boost.sh, the iOS simulator bjam and compiler options include "-arch i386" * The release notes for Boost 1.54.0 state that "Boost no longer supports the 80386 target CPU" * The Boost 1.53.0 libraries mentioned above appear to compile fine for OS X, iOS, and the iOS simulator using the same script * The Boost 1.54.0 libraries appear to compile fine for OS X and iOS itself using the same script Here is what I think I know: * When passing "-d13" to bjam (to generate debug information), it appears that the variable "CONFIG_COMMAND" is not being set when building for the iOS simulator. For the other configurations, this variable is set to the path to clang and includes the compiler options. For the simulator, it is empty which I believe leads to the error above as when bjam attempts to run the compiler using this variable, it instead runs some appended options which begin with the template depth. Therefore, the CONFIG_COMMAND variable does not appear to be being set properly causing the failure. I do not know why it's not being set as I don't know enough about the Boost build system to sift through the rest of the output generated with the "-d13" flag. I suspect an incompatibility with the "-arch i386" option was introduced with 1.54.0. I've tried changing this to "-arch i486" and "-arch x86_32" but the same problem occurs. Has anyone else had success with this? I'd like to use Boost.Log which is why I'm even attempting this with 1.54. Thanks!

[program_options] Parsing config files

Hello, Need a little help grasping the nature of parse_config_file. The example: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_54_0/doc/html/program_options/tutorial.html… also seems a bit lacking: says that there are two calls to store, but I only see one. Maybe the example has not been updated? What I need to know is, if we specify some options, do we specify the same option names in a config file? So that if we have an option on the command like like: --my-option-name 1234, then the corresponding line in the config file would go: my-option-name=1234 ? Thank you. Regards, Michael Powell

cannot use boost asio 1.43 with visual studio 2008

Hello, I tried using boost 1.43 with my project and am having a problem compiling using the asio libraries. There is a namespace 'generic' and my VS (2008 and 2010) doesn't allow that word. I am guessing it is a keyword in visual studio? Is there a way I can disable the use of the 'generic' keyword? Hello, My previous post contained a minimal example, which was incomplete, deliberately so as not to bloat the post with code. However Jeff Flynn has requested a minimal code example. I have attached several files for classes to this e-mail. * BaseClass - the base class, which has a serialize method * DerivedClass - a sub-class with its own serialize method * InstantiableClass - the class actually instantiated from DerivedClass * Main - code example of the client/server that serializes and de-serializes the InstantiableClass object. Our system automatically inserts some pre-compiled headers so to get the code to compile you may need to add your own #includes. The output from the main program is this: Serializing... BOOST: I am an Instantiable class object BOOST: I am in BaseClass::serialize De-serializing... BOOST: I am an Instantiable class object BOOST: I am in BaseClass::serialize Assertion failed: dynamic_cast<InstantiableClass&>(object).getCom() == 20, file Main.cc, line 8 This highlights the polymorphism problem in a nutshell. The overloaded what() method is telling me that in both the client and server code the objects is an InstantiableClass object. However the Derived::serialize is not being called on either side. Thus the data (m_com) from the DerivedClass is not being serialized and is lost. The compiler, and debugger, is telling me my object is an InstantiableClass, however when boost calls serialize on the object, the code in the BaseClass and not the Derived class is being called. Removing all support for Visual C++ 7.0, GCC 3.2 and other old compilers

Hello all, There has been some discussion on the development list about dropping all support for old C++ compilers. This will allow us to remove a lot of workarounds and simplify the code but before doing so it's a good idea to find out if anyone is still using them. Using boost with these compilers will cause a compile error in the config library (you can work round that using a custom configuration, but it's unlikely you'll be able to get much to work). The currently proposed versions for removing support are: Digital Mars 8.40 and earlier Visual C++ 7.0 and earlier GCC 3.2 and earlier Intel C++ 5.0 and earlier Which is, I think, a very cautious list. There's also a good chance that we might want to remove support for Borland C++ 5.x. Is there anyone still using those compilers? Just to be clear, this doesn't mean we'll be fully supporting all compilers later than these. Old compilers such as Visual C++ 7.1 and gcc 3.4 won't have a config error and we won't deliberately remove support, but support will be patchy. Many libraries (especially new ones) don't support those compilers, and we also don't have any formal testing for them, so if a new change breaks something, it might not be noticed. If you are still using compilers which are a little more recent than the ones listed above, it might still be worth mentioning in case we consider removing support for them in the future. Hi, I am trying to add a support for degenerate / corner cases for my JSON parser. First I needed support for malformed null values for object members like that: obj : { "bad_member: , "correct_member: null } I would like the parser to generate same result for both members in that case (null value). My array parser looks like this: array = '[' >> value % ',' >> ']'; which is only god for 1 or more element list. Trying out Build on Windows, have questions

After using a bunch of IDEs to compile my trial Boost code on Windows, I'm trying out Boost's included build system. I've been using the directions at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_54_0/more/getting_started/index.html. I'm using a 32-bit Windows 8 Pro laptop. I have the MinGW-Builds version of GCC 4.8.1 installed. I downloaded a copy of Clang 3.3, built with the aforementioned GCC. I also have Visual Studio Express 2012 (v11.0) installed, the Desktop version along with the Metro and Web versions. The copy of Clang is installed into the same directories as GCC, and the "bin" sub-directory is in my PATH. I'm using a Subversion copy of the Boost libraries. Per the Getting Started instructions, I changed to the Boost Subversion directory and ran "bootstrap." I'm using a "user-config.jam" file of: //===== using gcc : 4.8 : : <cxxflags>-std=c++11 ; using msvc : 11.0 : "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\bin\cl" ; using clang : 3.3 : : <cxxflags>-std=c++11 ; //===== Then I ran ".\b2", and the GCC version of the Boost libraries were built. Then I ran ".\b2 toolset=msvc" for the Visual Studio version. When I tried ".\b2 toolset=clang", it failed miserably since it couldn't find any of the standard headers. Now I've heard that Clang can build for Windows, but actually using it is broken (no matter how it's built). Is there a way to adjust the clang entry in my "user-config.jam" so it gets all the stuff it needs from the GCC installation? Thanks to everyone who's replied to my previous boost logging question - still having some issues I'm afraid :S I've been struggling with boost log for a while now - I got their simple example writing to a log file (http://boost-log.sourceforge.net/libs/log/example/doc/tutorial_file.cpp) However, when I try to copy that code into my own 'Logger' class, I can't get it to write to the log file. Boost Iterator: Limiting an existing iterator

Hello, I'm writing a C++ class which has an STL container as a data member, and I'd like to write an iterator class which allows to iterate through the container. Which container is used, is implementation detail. I want the iterator to be a ForwardIterator, even if a random-access container is used, e.g. std::vector. What's the quick and simple way to define an iterator adapter class which uses the "base" iterator's functions, but only the ones supported by a forward iterator? The reason I need it is error detection. If the user gets a random-access iterator and treats it as such, the compiler won't complain, but in future versions of my code the user's code may break because random access shouldn't really be supported, e.g. if I change from vector to list. [asio] using libgamin

Hello, one can use "signal_set" to connect to a SIGHUP signal and then reload a configuration file. I am thinking about a different approach. What about using libgamin to get notified if the config file changes and then reload automatically, if the config file is correct and valid. Is it possible to implement that behavior with asio? I read through the reference but I couldn't find something. I am not yet familiar with all aspects of asio. Perhaps I have overread it. [Wave] Making wave driver work with 0 arguments passed as __VA_ARGS__

Hello everyone, I'm porting some g++ code to MSVC, and I'm trying to use the Boost.Wave driver executable as a preprocessor instead of Visual Studio's. Boost 1.54.0. I'm generally successful, but I'm having trouble with macros like these: #define LOG(msg, ...) whatever Usage examples: LOG("Hello world!"); LOG("Hello and print out some variables", foo, bar); Both g++ and MSVC have custom extensions that make these examples work, but Wave is pretty strict and follows the standard to the letter, so gives the error message "not enough arguments for macro LOG" for the first example. I know it's possible to rewrite each macro like this in a standard-compliant way, but it's a lot of work and gets complicated if I want recursive macro invocation. Is it possible to enable this behaviour in wave somehow? Do I need to compile Wave Driver with a specific option? I searched through the docs and tried looking at the code, but I can't find anything. Hello, I use Boost.Interprocess on Windows 2003 Server. I am experiencing performances troubles. I am trying to understand what happens, and arrived on Microsoft web pages. I seems that on Windows, shared memory is implemented only through mapped files, and that only a portion of the shared memory is physically in the RAM (this limited number of pages is called "working set"). The Windows API provides some functions for this working set : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc441804%28v=vs.85%… I would have liked Interprocess wraps the functions GetProcessMemoryInfo() and SetProcessWorkingSetSize(), so that the full shared memory is put in RAM. But for now, I fear it is impossible to have with Interprocess performances similar to the ones provided by the alternative : data in the process memory.

Hello, I'm a newbie in this library and I feel a little bit lost. I have the following problem: I currently have an image of the type ` boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t`. I need to pass it to a function (from a code I don't mantain) with this prototype: void function(const boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t& input, const int index, const boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t &output) I have created an output image by using the following syntax: boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t output(input._dynamic_cast<boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t>()); At this point, the compiler accepts the image output as input for the function. However, I need the image back to the `boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t` type. Storing path from A*, using operator::new with boost::multi_array

I'm trying to use dynamic memory allocation for the first time. I want to allocate memory for a 2 dim dynamic array, to store paths from an A* function. I think the array for the job is boost::multi_array. Deserializing Boost archives using C#

Hi, I'm currently writing a component in C++ which creates a hierarchy of objects, and serializes them using the Boost serialization library. The serialized archive consists of a root "Document" object, which consists of an STL vector of "Pages". Each page consists of an STL vector of other object types, which themselves have sub-objects. The platform is Microsoft Windows. At some time in the future I want to port the component to C#. One option would be to call the Boost library from C# using interop, but I'd rather try to code it completely in C#, as that would bring a lot of portability benefits. What I'd ideally like to do therefore is in the future to deserialize with C# any files currently being saved with C++. Since Boost provides XML archives I thought I'd look at changing from my current text archives to XML archives. That was straightforward and I'm now saving to XML archives. I'm now starting to look at whether it possible to deserialize an XML archive using C#, possibly by writing a skeleton test component in C#. I'm pretty familiar with C#, but not XML serialization in C#, so I'm not sure yet how to map the XML elements (and class ids ?) to C# objects. In the meantime I was wondering if any one has done anything like this or had any thoughts on whether this approach is feasible? [Boost.Log] compiling issue of trivial example under boost version 1.5.4

Hi All - I was trying to compile the boost log example code under boost_1_54_0/libs/log/example/trivial/. I basically want to have a simple logger with filter function. So the example code serves the purpose. I got the attached error message while trying to compile. I think my compile command is fine because if I comment out the section of " core::get()->set_filter ( trivial::severity >= trivial::info ); " it compiles and runs fine. Can someone please provide some insight of how to make the severity filter work? [datetime] to/from ISO

Hello, I have a cross platform date/time quirk I want to work out. I am using Boost DateTime Posix to_iso_string and from_iso_string to pass date/time fields over the wire. What I am finding is that C# .NET DateTime and/or Boost DateTime Posix ISO do not agree, at least where ISO format is concerned. So... Is it a Boost issue? Or a .NET issue? I'm not positive, but the ISO format goes something like this: "YYYY-mm-DDTHH:MM:SS" Whereas Boost interpretation of that is something like: "YYYYmmDDT..." Something else after 'T', not sure, is that seconds since the epoch? Something like that. Anyway. Parsing the tree is falling over on that interpretation. A workaround is to leave the field out (for now), but longer term I would like to preserve the time field in whatever date/time format will work and parse ubiquitously over the wire. interprocess file_lock timed_lock not returning false after timeout

Hi all! I think there are two issues, one is a documentation issue, the other might be a bug with boost::interprocess file_lock. The documentation issue is that it was not clear to me by reading the documentation on file_lock that it is a RAII-style class. By reading that it has process lifetime, I assumed that once acquired, the lock would be held even after the file_lock object is destroyed. Once I figured this out, I changed the file_lock to a static method variable and ran into the following issue. I have two processes that use the following class method that I wrote. They both try to acquire a lock on the same file and the lock must be held until the process exits. When I start the first process, it acquires the lock correctly. serialization of standard unordered containers

I have a several classes that currently use old-fashioned ("ordered") containers that would benefit greatly from using the C++11 unordered variants. But in the version of boost I'm currently using (1.49.0) serialization of those containers is not supported. So I have some questions: 1. Is serialization of standard unordered containers supported in version 1.54.0 of the boost libraries? 2a. If so, what was the earliest version of the boost libraries that supported serialization of standard unordered containers? 2b. If not, is there a timetable for when this might be added? (The documentation and comments I could find gave completely inconsistent answers on this issue, so I'd like a definitive answer before I go to the trouble of installing a more recent version of boost if that's not going to help.) Hello, Okay, this is kind of a Boost question, and kind of not. Kind of a C++ question, and kind of not. Depends where I can find a workable solution. First, I am using Sourcery CodeBench in a more recent (not the most recent) version. I believe it is one revision back from most recent. Targeting (Arch)Linux/ARM. I believe I answered my question from online references: http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/utility/move, which I've also confirmed is a C++0x experimental feature in the version of CodeBench I am using. It may be more or less up to date when I upgrade to the latest CodeBench. If the experimental doesn't work out, is there a Boost alternative? If so, where do I include it? Thank you... Hi, I want to know if the connection is broken up at some point, can I reconnect without shutdown-close the socket. On Windows, I keep getting already_connected error when reconnecting but still fails to do other async read/write... Also, any way to test if the socket is connected? Thanks.

Hello, I am having a hard time getting my Asio usage off the ground. I started with what I thought was a nominal (knock on wood) asynchronous server, which runs in a worker thread, but was running into seg fault issues. In the interest of "simplifying" the issue, I decided to simplify to a "blocking" server, hopefully also hosted in a thread, but am also running into seg fault issues. First I am trying to capture the server instance in a lambda passing it to a thread as a runner. Then I am trying to capture a shared pointer to the server thinking there is some move semantic or something. Seg fault in either case. Most of the examples are one main being the sole main thread hosting the io_service. Would that this were the case with me. This has to be one worker among several other workers running in the same process. Wouldn't mind if there were a couple of ideas recommending what I might explore next. Thank you... Hi, I'm developing an application for Windows and Mac. My source compiles and links fine, but I'm having a problem when building the code on the Mac (OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, Xcode 4.6 using GCC). Some basic questions about Boost filtering_streams. I have dozens of functions that presently take a parameter of std::ofstream&. I've compiled, linked and run the commonly cited boost filtering_stream test code for packing and unpacking and it worked perfectly for me.
