I'm writing an XML based project right now. I haven't been able to find any good, open source XML parser to incorporate into my application, so I am using MSXMLDOM. This is a bummer. It seems like a good XML database manager would be a valuable addition to the Boost libraries. Is anyone working on one?

Hi, OS: cygwin uptodate Boost: 1.28 C++ comp: g++ 2.95.3-5 After what appears like a warning | error free compilation of the thread library. I'm trying to compile the examples, like this: $ g++ -I/data/boost_1_28_0 -o monitor monitor.cpp /data/boost_1_28_ 0/libs/thread/build/bin/libboost_thread.lib/gcc/release/runtime-link- static/threading-multi/libboost_thread.lib Which compiles fine, however when trying to run the example, I get: $ ./monitor.exe Segmentation fault (core dumped) This happening with all the examples, I'm guessing that I must be doing something wrong... =:-D At the same time I'm doing not doing anything particularly wacky so if someone could point my obvious mistake. Do I need to link against boost_threadmon also? Tia, Christophe

I really like that example iterator (I was just typing up an email to suggest it when I received this one). The example does something useful, and you can easily see the difference between reading lines of input without the iterator, and with the iterator. Regex matching quoted strings

Hello all, I got Regex to compile and link into a project using MSVC6. My problem is in trying to implementing a command line parsing regexp that handles quoted strings. I have code that will selectively match quoted strings but somehow ignores non-quoted strings. The code fragment is below. I've read over Mastering Regular Expressions and some Perl Cookbook stuff but nothing works straight out of the book. Any tips? The code below finds all three parameters (in the spec var), but has no match for 'parm1'. Any help is certainly appreciated. It was written to help me understand why I was getting compile errors from a real adaptor. Someone else can probably come up with an introductory example which is less oddball. But I'd like to defend the general principle of "toy" introductory examples. When someone knows nothing about a topic, a toy example is the best introduction. It is "known good", and can be used to verify that compilations using the library work as expected. It can be modified to see the effect of changes. Because it is a toy, it is totally non-threatening. It makes the reader feel superior, rather than like a dunce. The "C Programming Language" and "C++ Programming Language" books both started with a little "hello, world" program, very much a toy. Although simple, it starts the ball rolling with something that works and is understandable almost every reader. In the case of ia_experiment.cpp, it illustrates the relationship between the finished iterator, the Base class, and the Policies class with greater clarity IMO than documentation in any form other than C++ code. --Beman

Hi, I found some old emails about a pass through stream buffer, but I can't find it in the boost library. Am I going blind? Basically I'm in the middle of writing a gzstream class that compresses and decompresses data to and from a iostream and I thought this pass through buffer would be exactly what I need. hello all.. i've got some questions about using bpl, and i've searched the docs & the examples, and i can find no answer this example illustrates the issues i'm having <cpp> class B ; class C ; class A { public: A() ; virtual bool func1 ( ) ; virtual bool func2 ( ) = 0 ; virtual ~A() ; virtual int func3 ( std::list<C> ) ; protected : B m_Bobj ; std::string m_Aname ; } ; </cpp> now , i know how to expose the virtual and pure virtual functions to pyhon, i just write a derived class A_callback, and write some static default functions that forward the impl to the virtual function in A . my problem is in the func3() and the protected members do i need to write my own wrapper functions to python for mapping a list<C> ? or does bpl do this itself in some way? and how do i expose the protected members to python? if i do something like this : <cpp> boost::python::class_builder<A , A_callback> a_class ( this_module , "A" ) ; a_class.def ( &A::m_Bobj , "m_Bobj" ) ; </cpp> that line of code gets me this error (in msvc 6 : sp 5 ) : error C2248: 'm_Bobj': cannot access protected member declared in class 'Logging::Endpoint' <file-name> : see declaration of 'm_Bobj' how can i get this to work?

BGL: traversal algorithm for tree

I have implemented a rooted tree structure as a BGL graph. I need to be able to traverse the tree from root to leaves, while doing something at each vertex. I need to be able to do this as inorder and postorder traversal. My question is if it's possible to do this with any of the existing algorithms in BGL. My current thinking is to implement a function traversal( ... ), but if there already exists an alternative, I would prefer to use it. Björn

iterator_adaptor Question

I have a class that holds a container of pointers to polymorphic Base classes. I'd like clients who iterate over those Bases using a mutating iterator type to be able to call non-const Base class member functions (but I do not want those clients to be able to replace the Base* directly). I'd also like clients who iterate using a const_iterator type to be able to call only const Base class member functions. In the following test code, I've attempted to use boost::iterator_adaptor to create a const iterator with these properties, but the const_iterator still allows calls to non-const operations. boost shared_ptr - thread safe and non thread safe editions

Hi. Is there any easy way to get a thread safe edition of the shared_ptr (BOOST_HAS_THREADS) and a "non" thread safe edition (BOOST_DISABLE_THREADS) inside the same project? The thread safe edition of the shared_ptr is a bit slower and I would like to able to use the non thread safe shared_ptr, when I known it only be used on the same thread. Hi, I'm trying to use Boost.Python to create an extension module based on some existing code. Therein I have a class hierarchy which I would like to expose in a way that would make it possible to subclass any of its classes in python. I run into a problem when I try to expose C++ functions which return pointers to the base class of the hierarchy. In the minimal example I am using for testing purposes I have: // An abstract base class class abstract { ... virtual void thing() const = 0; }; // A conctrete subclass implemented in C++ class concrete : public abstract { ... virtual void thing const { ... } }; // Callback to allow happy subclassing of abstract in python class abstract_callback : public abstract { ... }; // Callback to allow happy subclassing of concrete in python class concrete_callback : public abstract { ... }; BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE_INIT(abstract) { ... python::class_builder<abstract, abstract_callback> abs_class(this_module, "abstract"); ... python::class_builder<concrete, concrete_callback> con_class(this_module, "concrete"); con_class.declare_base(abs_class); ... } This all works fine, until I try to expose to python a function such as abstract* ret_p_abs( ... ); When compiling (gcc 2.95.2) the module, I get the error no matching function for call to `py_extension_class_converters (boost::python::type<abstract *>)' I infer from comments in the source code that this is to be expected if the class in question has not been wrapped as an extension class. This makes sense, as abstract has, indeed, not been wrapped ... but I don't think that it should be; abstract_callback was created for that purpose. How should I proceed ? Thanks,

Regexp linking problems with VC++6.0 + STLPort

I've read through all the other previous messages dealing with problems with Regexp and VC++, but I wasn't able to find a good answer for my problem. I compiled Regexp++ without any problems. I added the correct directory path for the libraries, so that happens automatically (in my case it links with boost_regex_vc6-stlport_mssd.lib (multithreaded, static run, static link, debug). However, as soon as I try to use any regexp function or class from my code, it comes back with a link error. test_pool_alloc.cpp will not compile with CW 8.1

Sorry if double posted (originally sent via gmane.comp.lib.boost.user but never showed up). To get test_pool_alloc.cpp to compile with CW 8.1 (Windows), I had to define BOOST_NO_PROPER_STL_DEALLOCATE. Once compiled, the test does run ok. Boost Config problem - MSVC 7, boost 1.28.0

I was running into problems with min and max being macros when attempting to port my code to .NET. When I went to look at visualc.hpp, I saw that NOMINMAX was only defined when _MSC_VER <= 1200. My break seems to have happened where a boost file was included, then a windows header came in, so the macros were enabled. Using boost::function with VC6

Is there any way to use boost::function and member function pointers with VC6 . I realize it is deficient in partial specialization but I was still hoping to be able to use it. All my attempts to compile meet with failure although the compiler tests say that VC6 succeeds both with boost::function and boost::bind. I added a new module and wrote a main() {} function after included some header files of Boost. Whe I tried to compile the program it produces an error message that the header files don't exist!!!! A few questions about this configuration... I'm trying to compile Boost 1.28.0 using Borland C++ 5.5.1 with the STLPort 4.5.3 STL. I've wandered through the various config.hpp files, the stuff for platform, compiler, and stdlib, etc. It would seem that the right set of stuff is being picked but there's some unexpected behavior being encountered when #include-ing standard headers from STLPort via Borland. Any ideas on correcting this? Other, somewhat related, questions: If I build w/o STLPort, things seem OK. The regex static libraries are placed in a "runtime-link-dynamic" directory. Threads, on the other hand, has that directory as well as a "runtime-link-static" directory variation. Does the directory name imply which version of the compiler's RTL is required when linking w/ that version of the Boost library? And is there a reason that regex didn't have a "runtime-link-static" directory and associated static library created? I want to statically link the RTL and boost w/ my app. Finally, how do I go about creating just a single boost library (so I can try building threads w/ STLPort w/o encountering the regex errors). Compiling a threads DLL using VC6

I just downloaded Boost and am trying to do some development using it. Our product will be developed and fielded on both Win2K and Solaris. So far I've been using Boost solely on VC6, and I have a question regarding building the threads library. I've gotten the build to run correctly, but it doesn't seem to build a DLL version of the library. I looked in the both the runtime-link-static and runtime-link-dynamic dirs, and both contain only a .LIB version of the library. Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Or am I misunderstanding what should be generated? Any clarification or pointers would be greatly welcomed. Thanx, Steve Dussinger

I currently have a class that exposes a signal but otherwise hides its internals behind a firewall using the Pimpl idiom: class Foo { public: boost::signal0<void> statusChanged; private: class Impl; boost::scoped_ptr<Impl> const pimpl_; }; Since all I want to do publicly is allow things to connect to this signal: Foo foo; foo.statusChanged.connect(boost::bind(&X::bar, this)); it'd be nice to hide the signal too and replace it with a connect() method: class Foo { public: boost::signals::connection connect(slot_type const &) const; private: class Impl; boost::scoped_ptr<Impl> const pimpl_; }; My problem is defining slot_type. If I have boost::signals::connection Foo::connect(boost::slot<void> const & slot) const { return statusChanged.connect(slot); } I get compiler warnings something like this (below). Hi there, I'm a new user of the boost library. I want to use the Boost Graph Library (BGL). For this I downloaded the complete boost package from www.boost.org (boost_all.tar.gz). It is Boost v. 1.28.0. I uncompressed and unpacked the stuff into a directory. Then I created a simple example program to play around with BGL. I ran into trouble when I tried to compile the code. I'm using gcc 2.95.2 on SPARC Sun Solaris 2.7. With the "-pedantic" option given I get this failure: In file included from ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/detail/numeric_traits.hpp:69, from ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/counting_iterator.hpp:57, from ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/pending/integer_range.hpp:15, from ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/graph/detail/adjacency_list.hpp:34, from ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/graph/adjacency_list.hpp:293, from nd_patch.C:21: ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/cstdint.hpp:202: too many `l's in integer constant ../../../boost_1_28_0/boost/cstdint.hpp:205: #error defaults not correct; you must hand modify boost/cstdint.hpp *** Error code 1 Without the -pedantic option everything works fine. As far as I understand I cannot use the option anymore for code that references BGL #includes. Is this a known problem and is there -- maybe -- a workaround? I'm trying to compile the thread library using the Borland command line tools, version 5.5.1, and the STLPort version of STL, version 4.5.3. hi all, i'm using boost::python to add acces to a C++ based network logging system from python and i'm running into a few snags wrt operator overloading .. specifically.. some of the classes support some operator signatures that i'm not sure how to export to python .. the python docs & boost::python discuss overloading operators, but only in the context of numeric extensions, and there is some things about a __coerce__ method .. but i'm not clear on how they should be used .. for example supports a stream-like interface: class LogStream { ILogStream& operator<<(long double ld); ILogStream& operator<<(std::string s); //for stream manipulators ILogStream& operator<<( ILogStream& (*pf)(ILogStream&)); } ; these are clearly not numeric operator overloads is there any way i can map these operators to their python equivalents ? --vat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi, to use boost::noncopyable I have to include boost/utility.hpp, i.e. _all_ utilities consisting of several template classes and functions. I expected to have a separate header in favour of compilation speed (as for boost/utility/base_from_member.hpp or boost/checked_delete.hpp which are included from utility.hpp). OK, at the end the preprocessed output is only ~100 lines (empty lines stripped) instead of 10 but what speaks against a separate header? problems w/ boost::regex

i'm having some problems in trying to use boost::regex with msvc6 , sp 5 (using boost 1.28.0) jam generates some *.lib's & some *.dll's but when i try to compile code that trys to use regex (such as the examples ) , i get linker errors of the form ==> LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file "boost_regex_vc6_mssd.lib" Error executing link.exe. at first i was confused about this as i could not find any files with such a name .. after some grepping i found some explanations on the lib files that the regex headers use to figure out what lib to include (in boost\regex\detail\regex_library_include.hpp which is rather a neat way of doing things, but jam doesn't appear to follow that methodology .. so i'm stuck since the naming convenctions don't match, and i'm not sure what files jam is generating (in fact i'm not even sure that jam is generating the static runtime, static link versions of boost that the above error is requesting me to find .. --vat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
