Unlock / free a boost::asio::strand in beast?

Hi, The application is using beast / websockets to communicate with a websocket server. A specific onread handler which is initially running on the stream strand needs to read another value from the websocket server to proceed. It sends a message and then waits on a future. This deadlocks the websocket communication. If instead of a strand a mutex were being used could unlocking the mutex before sending the message after the data that needs to be protected / requires synchronization has been already acquired and the resources would be available for the next handler. Is there any way of 'unlocking' the strand i.e. setting the state of the handler's thread so that 'isrunning_on_strand' = false and the stream can continue servicing the incoming messages? [Nowide] Nowide and Property Tree file IO

I'm trying to sidestep some issues with unicode filenames on Windows (MSYS64) using Boost.Nowide. Specifically, my program operates in UTF-8, and providing that to std/Boost functions yields incorrect filenames due to them being interpreted as UTF-16 (or something along those lines). However, the primary functions I have issues with are from Boost.PropertyTree. Specifically, read_json and write_json. These functions don't seem to be Nowide-friendly. I tried just calling boost::nowide::nowide_filesystem() before my json calls, hoping it would work; it did not, I got the same mangled filenames. My next thought was to see if a nowide stream could be substituted into the stream-taking variants of read_json/write_json; it cannot be, they aren't compatible. The only option that seems to leave is something along these lines: https://stackoverflow.com/a/21537818, but using Nowide to read in the file. That adds a lot of steps (and possibly memory usage). boost python AttributeError

hi I followed the basic boost python examples, both hello_ext.greet() and hello.World() and both are giving me AttributeError error, like AttributeError: module `hello` has no attribute 'greet' dumpbin does show that I have PyInit_hello exported out. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong as this should be trivial. thx -- Any MicroSoft extension file will directly go to trash without any warning and regret.

Fwd: Concatenated input streams

Hi, I'm interested in working with an input stream which comprises multiple input streams. The resulting stream comprises all of the input from the first stream (until EOF), then all of the input from the second, etc. For what it's worth, such an input stream is called a concatenated input stream in at least one other context (namely Common Lisp). The input streams in question are file input streams, although conceptually I don't know if that changes anything. I am hoping to find something equivalent to $ cat file1 file2 file3 ... > alldata and then reading alldata. Is there a Boost class which implements such a thing? I know that this is a pretty simple concept, and therefore it's just a small matter of programming, but I'm hoping that someone has already worked out the details. If there is such a thing in some library other than Boost, I would be interested to hear about that too. Thank you for your time, I appreciate your help very much. Robert Dodier

Curious definition of beast::file_mode::append

Hi All, The current definition of append seems to be identical to that of write. Both are defined as follows: 1. Create a new file if it doesn't exist. 2. Truncate to zero bytes, if it exists. The comment for append says, "The current file position shall be set to the end of the file prior to each write." However, if the file is always truncated to zero, implementing the above comment achieves nothing significant. Shouldn't append simply open an existing file or create a new one for writing and set the file-pointer to the end of the file? This will also obviate the need for append_existing. Following the same line of reasoning for write: The comment says that this mode permits random-access reading and writing for the specified file. However again, if the size is always truncated to zero bytes, random-access reading or writing becomes a moot point. On the other hand, if write is defined not to truncate (as I expected originally), it will obviate the need for write_existing as well. Am I misunderstanding these definitions? Is there a sound reason behind the current definitions? Thanks, Senthil.

What version of OpenSSL does Boost.ASIO use? And may I suggest to consider upgrading to the latest version if that hasn't been done already (if it's not too much trouble)? I tried to use version 3.0.1 (LibreSSL 3.4 is already out but according to openssl.org, their official latest version is 3.0.1? Vertical slopes and Cubic Hermite Interpolation

I'm reading about boost::math::interpolators::cubic_hermite and the constructor takes three arguments: x values, y values and slopes (dy/dx). Can this library be used when the slope at a point is vertical? If so, how do you specify that? I tried std::numeric_limits<double>::infinity() but that doesn't work. Cory

[Boost.Serialization] Exception during serialization through base pointer DLL & EXE

Hi, On our platform (VS2019, Windows x64, Boost 1.77) an exception occurs during the serialization of an instance through its base pointer. This error is systematic and I was able to reproduce w/ a minimal use test (cf. enclosed archive). This use case includes a solution w/ a DLL project and EXE project. The EXE project is a simple unit-test. On my platform when I execute the executable, I trigger an exception from Boost.Serialization ("unregistered void cast class cpe::derived_t<-class cpe::object_t"). I tried every recommandation that we can find on SO and Boost mailing lists without success. To be accurate, I prefer to mention that we are using Boost.Serialization Static Library flavor. Team, I'm trying to get a simple coroutine2 program to work with address sanitizer and I'm running into a block. I'm building boost_1_78_0 as follows: ./b2 context-impl=ucontext and compiling with -DBOOST_USE_ASAN and -DBOOST_USE_CONTEXT. std::launder and its usage in Boost

Hi, I wonder, what is the Boost community's opinion of std::launder? In particular, of its necessity when accessing an object that was created via placement-new in an aligned_storage. As I can see, it's used by Boost.Beast in its implementation of the variant type, but not in other parts of Boost. The reason I'm asking this is that I'm working on a C++14 code-base that uses Boost.Variant and Boost.Optional extensively (as well as other parts of Boost that use Variant and Optional internally). Now we're trying to switch to C++17 at least, and I worry whether it could potentially break things. To put things into context, C++ standard states in the [basic.life] section that if you had an object and then created a new one in the same location, you can use the pointer to the old object to refer to the new one only if (among other things) "the new object is of the same type as the original object (ignoring the top-level cv-qualifiers)". This means, as I understand it, that it's technically illegal to reinterpret_cast the pointer to aligned_storage to the pointer to the actual type of the object created via placement-new, because placement-new has already ended the lifetime of the aligned_storage object. So, implementations of Boost.Optional and Boost.Variant are illegal then (?). But it's been like that since C++03 and Boost worked fine all that time, so it looks like this UB existed only "on paper". But C++17 then added "Note: If these conditions are not met, a pointer to the new object can be obtained from a pointer that represents the address of its storage by calling std::launder". So now the language has the ability to deal with that UB, and a question arises, is it possible that compilers could start to use the UB to perform additional optimizations and make it a real UB? Also, I've seen a couple of times on stackoverflow.com people saying that it's actually fine to reinterpret_cast the storage in C++14, but in C++17 it's not (they didn't explain why though). So, can switching from -std=c++14 to -std=c++17 be a breaking change when using Boost? The fact that Boost.Variant and Boost.Optional don't use std::launder - is it an oversight or a conscious decision? Thanks!

Very intermittent segmentation fault with boost::multiprecision

Team, Trying to get to the root of a very intermittent seg fault in my program. Crash in async_handshake function

Hi All, I'm writing TLS client/server and my server is continuously crashing in the async_handshake function. I'm running out of ideas of what I'm doing wrong or how to solve the issue. I'm using VS 2022 and the latest boost from github. Tested with 1.78.0 as well. Using OpenSSL 3.0.1. Code is compiled as x64, /std:c++20. Using a single thread. Hi all, I am using boost 1.76.0 version. I have slightly modified the example program http_server_sync_ssl.cpp to just dump the payload it receives and i have used certificates with ssl context. When I run the program with valgrind, the "still reachable" memory keeps increasing with time. Boost DLL shared library handling

Hi, I am learning about <boost/dll/shared_library.hpp> So far I have manage to follow along with the tutorial I believe https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_77_0/doc/html/boost_dll/tutorial.html Using tutorial 5 as an illustration https://github.com/apolukhin/Boost.DLL/blob/develop/example/tutorial5/load_… On this line, I will have the ability to reference the object of my_api_sum I believe https://github.com/apolukhin/Boost.DLL/blob/develop/example/tutorial5/load_… I have the following questions: 1. If I have a class that is e.g. a shape, say rectangle (of different sizes), what approach may I use to create different instances of the class from the plugin? 2. If my class requires parameters for it's construction, how do I pass it via the shared library loading mechanism ? Or have I been looking to use boost dll shared_library wrongly and that I might look at the plugin being some sort of factory design approach ? Thank you in advance.
