[Interprocess/Process] Libraries status?

Dear Boost users/developers, first let me introduce myself to the list as I am newcomer here. My name is Peter Novak and I am using Boost since few months in some of my research projects. I need to implement some extensive interprocess communication and as I am already using Boost quite extensively, I looked a bit around and found that there are Boost.Interprocess and Boost.Process libraries hanging somewhere in the air. As I found, Interprocess by Ion Gaztanaga was already accepted for Boost release last in February 2006. Since then, we already saw 1.34 release, which did not include this library(why?), although it is already included in the CVS tree. Finally, there does not seem to be any special review notice, or any other remark about the fate of the Process library by Julio Vidal, although it was written in the frame of the SoC project last year and did not seem to receive negative comments on the developer's list. Is there somebody who could update me on the fate of these libraries? I mean whether they will be included (Interprocess) in the next Boost release, and if so, when is the next version of Boost scheduled to be released? Are there any considerations to submit Process library for review, or was it dismissed without a proper review process? As of now, I am considering to incorporate the Interprocess library into my source tree anyway and one day when the next Boost version will be released, I will migrate my package to the version included with the Boost 1.35(?). [test] cannot wipe out linker errors

Hi there, I'm using boost 1.34 on MSVC 7.1. For whatever reason I cannot eliminate various linker errors. I have defined my BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASEs in several .cpp files and this seems to create multiple definition of various symbols. The errors look as the following: string_table_test.obj : error LNK2005: "bool boost::test_tools::`anonymous namespace'::dummy_cond" (?dummy_cond@?A0x7aa5c0d5@test_tools@boost@@3_NA) already defined in ORM_test.obj string_table_test.obj : error LNK2005: "class unit_test_log_t::boost::unit_test_log_t & boost::unit_test::`anonymous namespace'::unit_test_log" (?unit_test_log@?A0x7aa5c0d5@unit_test@boost@@3AAVunit_test_log_t@23@A) already defined in ORM_test.obj Did anyone had to deal which such messages before? Pointer containers and raw arrays of pointers

Greetings. I've been wrestling with some legacy C code which makes heavy use of raw arrays of pointers-- typically pointers to quasi-OO C structures which have specific "constructor" and "destructor" functions. Here's a contrived example: struct OldStuff { ... }; OldStuff* CreateOldStuff(); void DestroyOldStuff(OldStuff*); Then there are functions which return zero or more of these structures as output via an array of pointers: bool FiddleWithStuff(OldStuff** output, size_t count, ...); It's the callers responsibility to properly dispose of the results returned in 'output' by calling DestroyOldStuff() on each element. What I'd like to be able to do is provide a wrapper for functions like this which provide automatic management for the output values. Here's an example using ptr_vector: struct OldStuff_Destroyer { // What's up with the const pointer to deallocate?!? static void deallocate_clone(const OldStuff* p) { DestroyOldStuff(const_cast<OldStuff*>(p)); } }; typedef boost::ptr_vector< boost::nullable<OldStuff>, OldStuff_Destroyer> StuffVec_t; bool Wrapper(StuffVec_t& output, size_t count, ...); The pointer containers like ptr_vector seem to be a good fit, particularly given the customizable cloning behavior and is a very natural transition from an array of pointers. The problem I'm having is how to couple ptr_vector to the legacy code which expects to use arrays of pointers. Here's what I'd like to do: bool Wrapper(StuffVec_t& output, size_t count, ...) { // Won't work: resize() isn't supported output.resize(count); // Won't work: no way to get to raw storage return FiddleWithStuff(&output[0], count, ...); } As noted, this won't work for a couple of reasons. The pointer containers have an aversion to containing NULL pointers, which is why I imagine resize() isn't supported. And there's no way to get a pointer to the raw storage for the pointers to provide a buffer for the legacy code to write into. I do understand why the pointer containers don't support what I'm trying to do here, and the restrictions are entirely reasonable to provide additional safety. But... Using a container of smart pointers isn't an option, either, for the same reason: the need to have legacy code write into the storage as if it were an array. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to encapsulate a collection of pointers and some associated deletion logic? Obviously I could write my own pointer collection that satisfies my requirements, but I was hoping to use off-the-shelf bits. Thanks for any ideas. -Chris

boost libraries and gcc-2.95 on linux

Hello! Are compiler requirements equal across all boost libraries? Trying to create a property map (passing 'get' a member pointer as property) from a bundled property of a filtered graph i get the following error: 'vertex_bundled' : is not a member of 'boost::filtered_graph<Graph,EdgePredicate>' Is this a known problem? Date-time - How to handle mixed instances of floating, UTC and local times

I have an application that needs to deal with floating time, UTC and local time. I can use ptime to represent floating and UTC but there's then no way to tell, for a given ptime instance, whether it represents a floating time or UTC. I could use local_time with a null tz to represent UTC or floating (seems like a hack and still only allows me one or the other representation) and a non-null tz for local times. Given only two 'time' classes (ptime and local_time) what's the best way to represent three different time concepts? Hello, I have boost_1_32 version installed at /usr/include/boost Also, I have installed boost_1_34 at another path:/home/myname/work/boost/boost_1_34_0/ Now when I try to run with 1_34 version, it still points to 1_32 version at /usr/include (this is observed when I debug using gdb it refers to /usr/include/boost/regex/v4/match_results.hpp:118) I tried following things: 1] export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/myname/work/boost/boost_1_34_0/boost:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export PATH=/home/myname/work/boost/boost_1_34_0/boost:$PATH 2] I am using following command for compilation g++ -c -g -I/home/myname/work/boost/boost_1_34_0/boost ${TEST_FILES_PATH}/${TEST}.c g++ ${TEST}.o -L/home/myname/work/boost/lib -lboost_regex 3] I am including boost header in ${TEST}.c as below #include "boost/regex.hpp" Any help is most welcome. tools/regression *.cpp files and test procedure

http://www.boost.org/tools/regression/index.htm as well as the 1.34 release candidate refer to process_jam_log.cpp and compiler_status.cpp. Also there is a shell script run_tests.sh for invoking these programs. Is this information correct? Does this procedure, programs and scripts function with bjam V2 and whatever else has changed with 1.34 ? Robert Ramey

I noticed the following comment on file push_relabel_max_flow.hpp: // This is a breadth-first search over the residual graph // (well, actually the reverse of the residual graph). // Would be cool to have a graph view adaptor for hiding certain // edges, like the saturated (non-residual) edges in this case. This comment is on top of function global_distance_update(), which actually implements the bfs mentioned above. Is there a particular reason for not filtering the graph (with filtered_graph) and avoiding the saturated edges? (Instead of reimplementing bfs.) Hello, I'm reporting some warnings I'm getting from gcc when I compile with my code with -Wshadow (Boost 1.34). Not critical, just annoying (makes it harder to catch warnings in my own code). /usr/include/boost/signal.hpp:345: warning: declaration of 'combiner' shadows a member of 'this' /usr/include/boost/signals/signal_template.hpp:348: warning: declaration of 'result_type' shadows a member of 'this' /usr/include/boost/signals/detail/slot_call_iterator.hpp:51: warning: declaration of 'f' shadows a member of 'this' /usr/include/boost/program_options/parsers.hpp:34: warning: declaration of 'description' shadows a member of 'this' /usr/include/boost/variant/variant.hpp:1115: warning: declaration of 'which' shadows a member of 'this' /usr/include/boost/variant/variant.hpp:1120: warning: declaration of 'which' shadows a member of 'this' The variant ones are especially problematic, as the printout of the instantiation heirarchy is several pages long.

program_options: Are my options too complicated?

Hello, I am writing an application that moves some data through a sequence of possibly optional processing steps, for instance (simplified) 1/ Read and Export Data, optionally exporting it to a text or binary file. 2/ Optionally Normalise the data, optionally exporting to file. 3/ Optionally reduce the size of the data set, optionally exporting the result. 4/ Create a score for the data set, and write the score to a file or socket. Each processing step 1-4 has a set of options, for example step 1 might export the data as a text file or as a binary, and might transpose the data (rows and columns) to make it easier to plot in a spreadsheet. Data output at each processing step 1-3 is optional, and processing steps 1-2 are optional. As described, this sounds like a pipeline of processes, but the customers expectations (and my ability) suggest that this should be a single application*, but with a consequently complicated set of options. I'd like to be able to use program_options to help me parse the command line or config file, and so my plan for the command line is that it would support 4 options (one for each step), for instance with <required options> and [optional options]: app <--export [optional file name [binary|text [transpose]]> [--normalize [optional file name]] [--reduce [optional file name]] <--score <file name or server address> [optional treshold number]> <input file name> I want to allow each option to be given more than once, so that for instance data could be exported as text and binary with app --export file1.bin binary --export file2.txt text transposed ... In another case the command line might be simply app --export --normalize --score file://score.txt input.bin where --export and --normalize are given as boolean switches, and --score has used a default value for the threshold number. In another case, I would like all of the options in a configuration file, and only the input file name would be given on the command line. So my questions: 1/ Could I make my command line simpler? 2/ Will boost::program_options be helpful in this case - I've only used it once before in a much simpler scenario? 3/ What program_options methods should I be looking at? Although the documentation has an excellent set of examples, I'm finding the reference section something of a maze. All sugestions will be gratefully received! Steven * The data set is large, and some processing steps might transform the data in-place. Other steps might depend on the output of more than one steps (for instance step 4 might depend on the results of steps 2 and 3). I hope to make much of the process multi-threaded.

Hi, I successfully use replace_all function in a win32 "helloboost" application. My code has to work on Windows CE and when I tried a "helloboostpda" application, I had an error on boost/algorithm/string/compare.hpp because of the following include : #include <locale> This seems to be due to PocketPC2003 SDK that does not have a "locale" include (only a locale.h). Is there something I can do to use Boost algorithm/string library on Windows CE ? Thanks Francoise

Hi, I have tried to rebuild boost.filesystem with D_WIN32_WINNT set to 0x0400 (with cxxflags) but it seems that it (cxxflags) was ignored and filesystem libs was build as without any cxxflags option. [Boost.Graph] Unreachable nodes and dijkstra_shortest_paths

Hello. How does the distance_map container looks like if you apply the dijkstra_shortest_paths algorithm on a graph, and the graph is not connected? So how does the entry d[i] looks like if it is not possible to reach node i from the start node of the dijkstra_algorithm? I couldn't find this information in the online manual, the case of the predecessor_map is described there but not the one of the distance map. Building Boost with CMake/MSVC2005

Hi, I successfully build boost with cmake using MSVC2005/VS80 from sandbox - even boost::iostream with zlib support. The zlib.cpp is added to the project. Anyway, I get LINK : fatal error LNK1104: Datei "libboost_zlib-vc80-mt-gd-1_34.lib" kann nicht geöffnet werden. => means: could not found I have to set libboost_zlib-vc80-mt-gd-1_34.lib to ignore in the Studio Linker Settings. Does exist such a target in the cmake svn/build tree, or using jam? How to build it? I've never seen such on my linux box. Thanks Olaf

Boost default library names

I've just built and installed the boost 1.34 libraries from source on a Centos 4.4 Linux intsall, along side the default 1.32 Boost version that comes with RedHat/CentOS 4. The boost libraries have been installed in /usr/local/lib, but have very long and specific names, like libboost_program_options-gcc34-mt-1_34.so, and so to link against them I have to specify, for example, boost_program_options-gcc34-mt-1_34 instead of boost_program_options. Is there any quick change that I can make to create the extra symlinks, or are the long names deliberate and sensible? Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Steven

[timer] incorrect time ?

Hi there, the following program /****************************************************/ #include <iostream> #include <boost/timer.hpp> using namespace std; boost::timer t; main() { t.restart(); for(int i=0; i<5; i++){ usleep(500000); cout << t.elapsed() << endl << t.elapsed_min() << endl << t.elapsed_max() << endl; } } /****************************************************/ gives five times the following output, in 0.5 s intervals: 0 1e-06 9.22337e+12 I have tried the timer_test.cpp application (from http://www.boost.org/libs/timer/index.html) Most of it seems to be working, but the first messages also say: timer::elapased_min() reports 1e-06 seconds timer::elapased_max() reports 9.22337e+12 seconds, which is 2.56205e+09 hours After this the output seems to be fine. So something clearly is wrong. Any ideas ? This is on an OpenSuSE 10.2 system with a Boost 1.34.0 (with added ASIO support, 0.38rc3). g++ is 4.1.2 . Thanks and Best Regards, Ruediger

[IBD] Helping Boost Authors

Hello Boosters, We have a new resource at IBD: a section in the project Wiki called "Helping Boost Authors". http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/HelpingBoostAuthors This section is a bazaar of friendly hands. We are teachers, experience users, native English speakers and artists. We want to offer our help to Boost authors to improve their documentation. * How to get helped Just send an email to the boost-docs list with your request. We will do our best to help you. * How to help Add yourself as a proofreader, a translator or in the general section if you have others ideas that Boost authors may find useful. The main objective of this new resource is to act as the main connection between Boost authors and some of IBD folks that are eager to help them. We hope this will make healthier the relation between Boost authors and our project. Authors will get helped, and have more time to improve and add new features to their libraries. We will get in touch with you and hopefully learn enough to become a boost author someday. It is a win-win situation. We hope we can make Boost authors life more enjoyable with regards to documentation. Eagerly waiting to help somebody, King regards Matias
