Hi, I have a structure that is passed some type from which I can extract a units quantity type: template <typename Field> struct field { Field f; typedef typename Field::quantity_type quantity_type; // access typed data off Field quantity_type operator[](int i) { return f[i]; } }; Is there a way to invert a quantity type so I can compute and return, say, the inverse of the passed quantity_type? So, for example, is there any Boost.Units inverse meta like function that might let me say something like this: template <typename Field> struct field_inverse { Field f; typedef typename Field::quantity_type quantity_type; typedef typename bu::inverse<quantity_type>::type inverse_quantity_type; // access typed data off field, return inverse of quantity_type inverse_quantity_type operator[](int i) { return one / f[i]; } }; I’m hoping for something more general than partially specializing the bu::inverse method for each quantity I may want to invert. [Boost.Heap] Possible bug with ordered iterator and boost::heap::binomial_heap

Hi all, I'm observing a weird phenomenon when iterating over a binomial heap after pushing two values with the same priority. Instead of printing the expected values twice, the ordered iterator seems to print three values. I do not observe this behavior when using a Fibonacci heap or a binary heap. I've attached sample code that demonstrates this behavior. Can anyone help explain what's going on? [MSM] What happens to MSM if guard returns `false`, mutable events and error recovery?

Hi *, I am currently reading through the MSM docs and have one question, what happens to MSM if guard returns `false`. Does the MSM enter an error state in orthogonal region (http://www.boost.org/doc/ libs/1_64_0/libs/msm/doc/HTML/ch03s02.html#d0e577)? Even internals page describes, what happens if guard returns `true`, but not a single word on `false` case. Regarding the const events: I am programming an MSM to proxy network traffic and once a message with data was received it'll be analysed and moved between different states. Message instances implement move semantics. Currently, the MSM has an initial state `ready` where the `message_in` event is handled. This event contains the message to be analysed. From my current understanding I either have to make message field in `message_in` event mutable or MSM needs to to support r-value references. Can somebody tell me what's going to happen if the action only accepts r-value reference to an event instance? [Units] What is the correct/recommended way to handle different ratios in the same unit

Hi All, I have recently started looking at Boost.Units to use in my applications where unit conversions happens regularly. The conversions are mostly within the same unit, but different ratios, like hertz to killohertz and back (also distances). I have asked for some advice on StackOverflow, but still waiting for an answer to either indicate the correct way or confirm that what I am doing is correct. Boost.Parameter python and lazy evaluation of default arguments

Hello all, I have a question concerning the Boost.Parameter library and the python binding provided by this library. [Intrusive] Call custom function after tree rotations

Hi, I'm trying to implement an interval tree based on boost::intrusive::rbtree. For such an interval tree, certain fixup operations must be run after a node rotation. Now, as far as I can see from the code (looking at rotate_* in bstree_algorithms), there is no way of "hooking into"[0] these methods, right? Am I missing something? What I need: After every operation that changes the parent-child-relationship of nodes I need to touch all involved nodes. At this point, I'm considering monkey-patching bstree_algorithms using some preprocessor directives, but that is bound to fail spectacularly. Any better ideas? [Interprocess] uint64 atomic

Hi, I am new to boost-interprocess. I am trying to store some of my data structures in shared memory using boost::interprocess. Each of my data structure(s) contain a bunch of counters (basically size_t values) updated atomically. In the traditional world, std::atomic supports atomic update for size_t. However, I came to know that boost::interprocess doesn't support atomic update for uint64. I've looked at pairing my counter with a lock for synchronization purposes. I've implemented it and it seems to work. However, the upgradable_mutex is consuming 144bytes while my counter is 8bytes(size_t) making it cost prohibitive. Alternatively, I could use one lock for all the counters of a class to spread the cost but that'd affect the performance and affect parallelism. I'd appreciate it if someone could offer any alternate suggestions. Thanks. Say I have an object a of type any<mpl::vector<Concept1,typeid_<>>,_self&> and an object b of type any<Concept2,T> where Concept1 is a subconcept of Concept2. Is it possible to make a refer to b rather than the object wrapped by b? I mean: any_cast<void*>(&a)==&b typeid_of(a)==typeid(b) A solution involving wrapping/copying b into some auxiliary entity would be acceptable too. Compiling Boost 1.64.0 with Visual Studio 2017

Hi, Has anyone tried building Boost 1.64.0 with Visual Studio 2017 in “/std:c++latest” mode? I’m asking because I tried and the build generated a lot of errors and some of them are to do with things that have been removed in C++17, e.g. std::auto_ptr, etc. It seems that these need to be resolved soon especially when a lot of the compilers become C++17 compliant. Following are the environment: - Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64 bit - Python 2.7.13 - Visual Studio 2015 (v14.0) Following are the steps to the problem: (1) I downloaded boost_1_64_0-msvc-14.0-64.exe from https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__sourceforge.net_projec… . Since it is pre-compiled binary, I think there is no need to build Boost.Python manually. Note that it is for 64 bit build in VS2015 if I understand correctly. NEWBIE question: Undefined references: How do I find the library that resolves an undefined reference. For example, the output for the gcc linker running in MinGW shows: C:/boost/boost/asio/detail/impl/winsock_init.ipp:39: Undefined reference to `WSAStartup@8' I have googled the documentation a number of ways, but I cannot find the library that will resolve this error. I am sure that this is a common problem. Please point me to the documentation so I can fix this and the undefined references. Thanks!

[Move] unique_ptr with boost vector container (C++98)

I’m using boost::movelib::unique_ptr with a polymorphic container of type boost::container::vector and getting a compiler error that I can’t seem to figure out (see code sample and attached compiler output). Note, this error occurs when compiling without C++11 support w/ x86-64 gcc 4.9.3. When compiling w/ C++11 support (e.g. -std=c++11) the code compiles fine. Any ideas ? In my opinion the implicit conversion from T to expected<T> is a mistake. 5. About the exception to throw std::experimental::expected throw bad_expected_access<E>. I adopted the design of optional and bad_optional_access We could have as well a bad_expected_access_base class as Outcome has. My question is why don't throw directly E? Some are requesting a way to get a specific exception from E, but either there is one exception that works for all and we can set it using some kind of trait or we need to add a trait parameter to expected to the the mapping :( Do we really want this to be configurable? 6. Implicit conversion from E outcome::expected<T,E> outcome::expected<T,E> is implicitly convertible from E when there is no risk of ambiguity. std::expected<T,E> is implicitly convertible from unexpected<E>. [Regex] Has build location changed between 1.34.1 and 1.64.0 ?

I've just added Boost Regex to a new project. It is the first time I've done that for quite a long time (several years) and I'm left wondering whether Regex's standard build location has been changed, or whether I've missed a detail in the instructions. The last one I did was Boost version 1.34.1, under Visual Studio 6. The one I have just done is Boost version 1.64.0, under Visual Studio 12, aka Visual Studio 2013. To build 1.34.1 (on VC6) I run "bjam --toolset=msvc --with-regex stage". This creates two folders - "bin.v2" and "stage". Bin.v2 is where all the intermediate files are written. Stage/lib is where the final outputs are written. There are a number of different ones built; for all the various static/dynamic, single/multi-threading, debug/release options. Because of the auto-link stuff I just #include <boost/regex.hpp> in my project, and because of the use of #pragma comments in boost, the Link pass picks up the correct library file-name, provided I have included $(BOOSTDIR)\stage\lib in the linker's list of folders to search. (%BOOSTDIR% being my chosen download/build location) To build 1.64.0 I've followed the current instructions. I ran "b2 regex", which built a dll, which is not what I want. I then ran "b2 regex link=static", which build the static lib I wanted. However, the lib is left in a folder a long way down from the bin.v2 folder, which is where I expected it to be. It's in bin.v2\libs\regex\build\msvc-12\debug\link-static\threading-multi. Hence, I need to know all the build settings to work out the folder name. On the file-name side this is all hidden from my by the auto-link system, which builds the lib file's name from the various option settings. Having the name built automatically but not the path leads me to suspect I've missed something.... So: Is there an instruction I've missed to get all the built products (dlls or libs) put in a common (not too deep) location ? (so the auto-link system will be sufficient to find it given just one linker folder location) Is there an instruction I've missed to get all the combinations (static/dynamic, single/multi-threading, debug/release) built ? [Test] Message from unexpected exceptions

Hi, Is there a way of configuring Boost.Test to display the message from unexpected exceptions? I’m asking because at the moment whenever an unexpected exception is encountered by Boost.Test, it displays the type of the exception but not the message that goes with it making it more difficult to track down where the exception came from. If apart from the type of the exception the exception message is included, it could quicken the resolution of the issue. Kind regards, Leo

I don't have a strong opinion on which default would be the best. As you suggested, I have added it to the next revision. We don't implement the ordering and hashing operator overloads due to https://akrzemi1.wordpress.com/2014/12/02/a-gotcha-with-optional/. The fact the LEWG proposal does as currently proposed is a defect (it will be discussed by LEWG with P0323R2 in Toronto). As for optional this could be considered a defect. The question is if we want expected to differen from the optional interface. If we considered it a defect, I don't believe that we should remove comparison, but IMHO we should make the constructor from T explicit. I don't expect the committee to fix this for expected and let the issue for optional. And last a very draft paper I don't pretend to send to the standard meetings, at least not yet, about how FileSystem TS could be adapted to take in account the proposes status_value and expected classes. * DXXXX -*Refactoring FileSystem TS using **|expected|**or **|status_value|*||- https://github.com/viboes/std-make/blob/master/doc/proposal/expected/DXXXXR… This paper show that there is not silver bullet solution to reporting errors, but that making abstractions as status_value or expected makes the interface more clear, composable and readable (for me at least) than using out parameters error codes. The paper show also that wanting to have exception interfaces and non-exception interface forces to double the interface. Using expected could reduce it at the price of using .value(). I have an POC implementation in https://github.com/viboes/std-make/tree/master/include/experimental/fundame… Look for expected, functor, applicative, monad, monad_error folders for the implementation and std for the customization. My intention is to show that there is something on-going on the standard aside the expected proposal as requested by the committee. Issue with cross-compiling boost

Hello all, I am trying to cross-compile the boost libraries for an ARM based linux system. The system is an FX30 IoT gateway by Sierra Wireless. It comes with a dedicated, Eclipse based, development studio, which supplies the cross-compiler & a disk image with all the required headers & libraries to cross-compile to.
