Support for chain graph

I am interested in an algorithm in Bayesian Networks which uses chain graph, that is a graph that contains both directed and undirected edges. Since the declaration of the template seem to include one or the other, i am looking for ideas on implementing these graph. Any suggestions? Thanks, Matthieu

In the current library it's easier to deal with a single build type, and since a DLL is required for TLS usage, the static build was removed. In the next version of the library, the implementation is going to have to make use of TLS as well, so you'll always need a DLL, making it pointless to continue providing both a static library and the threadmon.dll. I am fairly new to boost (and jamfiles). I am using the threads library for cross platform thread support. Under the stable build a library libboost_thread.lib is created to staticly link in to my project, with seperate libs if I am using the DLL STL or static STL. That build config is gone in the latest version under CVS, replaced by a boost_thread dll set up. I want (and need) the old static version. I have successfully added it back into the jam file so that all 3 (including the threadmon) are built now, but that isn't something I really want to have to maintain as I get updates. Is the static lib intentionally and permanently removed or is it an oversight/temporary change? thanks.

BGL: cycles in undirected graph

(Disclaimer: My knowledge of graph theory isn't too broad, so have me excused if this is completely trivial...) I'm struggling a bit with finding cycles in an undirected graph. Doing a DFS/BFS and recording back edges, thus detecting the number of cycles and a connected vertex pair for each one is simple enough. However, I'd also like to find the sequence(s) of vertices that make up the cycle. There's and example in the book that does this, but relies on a graph with direction in the second step where a DFS is done from both back-edge vertices and the results intersected. This won't work in the case of an undirected graph as every vertex is reachable from any other (if there's only one "connected component"), so I would just end up with the complete set of vertices in every case. My idea is to use BFS and the record_predecessors visitor, but I can't seem to wrap my head around how to find the sequence of vertices connecting the cycle(s) from this. Could anyone offer some pointers? (hopefully not NULL :) ) Regards, -- Tarjei

bjam question

I have a library that depends on boost and is built with bjam. It puts sepearate targets in $(BAYES_ROOT)/target/bin/libBayesFilter.a/gcc/release/runtime-link-dynamic/libBayesFilter.a and the other debug directory as well. I am also working on a library using the same system that must link with libBayesFilter. My question is, how do I specify the library dependency on BayesFilter properly without having to specify the complete path to the target directory (which will change depending on the build features specified). I tried <lib>$(BAYES_ROOT)/BayesFilter/BayesFilter but it dies with: unknown dependent target <IdentityTest!/!home!stephenc!cvs!Bayes++!BayesFilter>libBayesFilter.a Am i missing something? -- Stephen

Conflict with winapi.hpp and windows.h (manifested in ACE)

Intel C++ 7.0 for Windows, STLPort 4.5.3, boost 1.29, ACE 5.3 Intel was warning a bunch of bad code in my source base, so I turned on warnings as errors, then I hit a problem where ACE was calling InitializeCriticalSection with a pointer to its typedef of CRITICAL_SECTION, and it was using the declaration of InitializeCriticalSection in winapi.hpp. Turns out, in the standard (by my interpretation), section 7.5/6 that if you put an extern "C" declaration in a namespace, its also accessible by ::. The call failed because boost::detail::winapi::critical_section != CRITICAL_SECTION. I ended up ifdef'ing the declaration of critical_section like so: #ifndef _WINBASE_ //header guard for winbase.h. struct critical_section { struct critical_section_debug * DebugInfo; long_type LockCount; long_type RecursionCount; handle_type OwningThread; handle_type LockSemaphore; ulong_ptr_type SpinCount; }; #else typedef CRITICAL_SECTION critical_section; #endif Please advise if you have a better solution. UBLAS: m[i] notation not supported on const ?

Since I did not get an answer on a related question, I am trying to state it different. It seems as if the "[]" access is not supported for const objects. Is there a reason for this, or is it a bug? thread_group behavior question

I've been using Boost for several months now, and I must say I've been very happy with it. I've primarily been using the threads and regex stuff from the library, and I have a question regarding the behavior of the thread_group.join_all method. In my current situation, I have a thread_group which launches several threads of execution for background servers, on an as-needed basis. If it becomes necessary to shutdown those background servers, I issue a join_all on the thread_group to wait for all activity to cease, then I can clear up the server instances themselves. If I issue a join_all from a thread and, while waiting for the join_all to exit, another thread creates a thread within my thread_group, what is expected? Will the join_all now wait for the original threads, as well as the newcomer, or will it only wait on the threads which were running at the time the join_all was called?? Thanx, Steve Dussinger

[BGL] Using BGL on Linux clusters

My next idea is to distribute the graph over nodes in a Linux (Beowolf) cluster, or some other parallel computer. Intel 7.0 Compiler and date_time library

First of all I would like to thank everybody who responded on my previous post. The real showstopper for me at the moment is date_time library. I did a small test -- compiled and run days_till_new_year.cpp against boost 1.29 (patched to not complain about __ICL 700) and current snapshot of boost CVS. Hmm, I'm not a very good evaluator I guess, I just went about my business using 7.0 without seeing if it worked correctly :) Rather than hacking ICL, you can modify boost/compiler/intel.hpp changing 600's to 700's. BGL: BFSVisitor::cycle_edge() ?

This probably is an error in the documentation (and the book), but I thought I'd just check to make sure: The documentation for the EventVisitor concept states: <quote> For example, the BFSVisitor of breadth_first_search() has a cycle_edge() member function. The corresponding tag is on_cycle_edge. </quote> As far as I can see BFSVisitor has no cycle_edge() function, and there is no on_cycle_edge tag in the code. The same function is also mentioned in chapter 12.3.1 of the book in the documentation of gray_target(e,g) and black_target(e,g) where it says that "A call to this function is always preceded by a call to the cycle_edge() function.". Kind of strange as the cycle_edge() function is not documented in the same chapter :) Regards, Tarjei

Under Linux Red Hat 8.1 Beta the lastest ICC/IA32 0.78 works without problems with boost regex 1.29. I just copiend over the libs/regex/build/ gcc.mak and gcc-shared.mak files to icc*.mak and changed the compiler name within to icc. Under RH8.0 I had some problems because the compiler chooked about the header containing the declarations for some tcp/ip data conversion functions htons() etc.. I've never used the bjam stuff up to now. Hello, Tired of MSVC deficiencies, and hoping to get certain performance increase I got evaluation version of Intel C++ compiler. I've heard lots of good things about this compiler, and was under impression that transition from MSVC to ICL should be very smooth. Huh, I had all kinds of troubles. First of all boost 1.29 gave up saying that it is an unknown compiler. Looking into config I figured that last known ICL was 6.0, so I just hacked it badly by redefining ICL as 600 prior to including any boost headers. I understand that it is not a good way, but hey, I am just evaluating it. Ok now everything compiled, but code using regex failed to link. No wonder, I have not build regex library with new compiler. It turns out that there is no makefile for any intel compiler, so I tried to do it with bjam, but seems that bjam did not set CC variable; it invoked compilation with just line of flags. At this point I gave up and decided to focus on parts of my project which do not depend on regex. Next surprise was when I tried to run tests, in debug mode everything was fine, but release mode failed miserably. It appears that date_time library does not work at all with optimization. Even setting /O1 did not help, only /Od worked. Failures were in very basic date operations, for instance boost::gregorian::date(2002,12,27) == boost::gregorian::date(2002,12,27) is not true! If I first construct a date, then ask for year, it throws, saying year is out of range. I searched through Boost Users and Dev mailing lists, found few posts discussing turning on strict ansi checks on intel, and also that in this case it is better to use STLport, since STL coming with MSVC could not be compiled in ansi mode. I tried to do that but can't compile STLport in strict mode either. Using STLport in regular mode did not have any effect on problems I am having. Here is version the compiler reports: Intel(R) C++ Compiler for 32-bit applications, Version 7.0 Build 20021018Z Copyright (C) 1985-2002 Intel Corporation. All rights reserved. Now, my question is: are these problems well known? If they are, is there any plans to fix them in next release? And while we at it, when should we expect new release? Many of those errors are easily worked around, its just hard to get the developers to change their code. HP, aCC and the standards

Hello Guys! I am now fighting with HP to recognize that their compiler is buggy. I am one of their customer and would like to get help with this fight. I want to use the boost.org format and regex libraries on HP-UX 11.00 with aCC, and I got contacted the local HP office about that. I told that I want to use modern libraries like the "boost.org" library. They answered that the HP aCC is the implementation of the ISO/IEC 14882 standard of the C++ language. Do you have any evidence that the HP implementation of C++ language breaks the standard and that's why the regex library and format library does not compile on those platform? microsoft has a way to implicitly require the loading of dll's.
