thread_group behavior question

I've been using Boost for several months now, and I must say I've been very happy with it. I've primarily been using the threads and regex stuff from the library, and I have a question regarding the behavior of the thread_group.join_all method. In my current situation, I have a thread_group which launches several threads of execution for background servers, on an as-needed basis. If it becomes necessary to shutdown those background servers, I issue a join_all on the thread_group to wait for all activity to cease, then I can clear up the server instances themselves. If I issue a join_all from a thread and, while waiting for the join_all to exit, another thread creates a thread within my thread_group, what is expected? Will the join_all now wait for the original threads, as well as the newcomer, or will it only wait on the threads which were running at the time the join_all was called?? Thanx, Steve Dussinger

[BGL] Using BGL on Linux clusters

Hi, I'm still trying to figure out how to use the BGL on massive graphs (see previous thread "[BGL] Using BGL for huge graphs"). My next idea is to distribute the graph over nodes in a Linux (Beowolf) cluster, or some other parallel computer. Intel 7.0 Compiler and date_time library

First of all I would like to thank everybody who responded on my previous post. The real showstopper for me at the moment is date_time library. I did a small test -- compiled and run days_till_new_year.cpp against boost 1.29 (patched to not complain about __ICL 700) and current snapshot of boost CVS. Hmm, I'm not a very good evaluator I guess, I just went about my business using 7.0 without seeing if it worked correctly :) Rather than hacking ICL, you can modify boost/compiler/intel.hpp changing 600's to 700's. BGL: BFSVisitor::cycle_edge() ?

This probably is an error in the documentation (and the book), but I thought I'd just check to make sure: The documentation for the EventVisitor concept states: <quote> For example, the BFSVisitor of breadth_first_search() has a cycle_edge() member function. The corresponding tag is on_cycle_edge. </quote> As far as I can see BFSVisitor has no cycle_edge() function, and there is no on_cycle_edge tag in the code. The same function is also mentioned in chapter 12.3.1 of the book in the documentation of gray_target(e,g) and black_target(e,g) where it says that "A call to this function is always preceded by a call to the cycle_edge() function.". Kind of strange as the cycle_edge() function is not documented in the same chapter :) Regards, Tarjei

Under Linux Red Hat 8.1 Beta the lastest ICC/IA32 0.78 works without problems with boost regex 1.29. I just copiend over the libs/regex/build/ gcc.mak and gcc-shared.mak files to icc*.mak and changed the compiler name within to icc. Under RH8.0 I had some problems because the compiler chooked about the header containing the declarations for some tcp/ip data conversion functions htons() etc.. I've never used the bjam stuff up to now. I've heard lots of good things about this compiler, and was under impression that transition from MSVC to ICL should be very smooth. Huh, I had all kinds of troubles. First of all boost 1.29 gave up saying that it is an unknown compiler. Looking into config I figured that last known ICL was 6.0, so I just hacked it badly by redefining ICL as 600 prior to including any boost headers. I understand that it is not a good way, but hey, I am just evaluating it. Ok now everything compiled, but code using regex failed to link. No wonder, I have not build regex library with new compiler. It turns out that there is no makefile for any intel compiler, so I tried to do it with bjam, but seems that bjam did not set CC variable; it invoked compilation with just line of flags. At this point I gave up and decided to focus on parts of my project which do not depend on regex. Next surprise was when I tried to run tests, in debug mode everything was fine, but release mode failed miserably. It appears that date_time library does not work at all with optimization. Many of those errors are easily worked around, its just hard to get the developers to change their code. HP, aCC and the standards

Hello Guys! I am now fighting with HP to recognize that their compiler is buggy. I am one of their customer and would like to get help with this fight. I want to use the boost.org format and regex libraries on HP-UX 11.00 with aCC, and I got contacted the local HP office about that. I told that I want to use modern libraries like the "boost.org" library. They answered that the HP aCC is the implementation of the ISO/IEC 14882 standard of the C++ language. They provided two links about the compiler: http://www.software.hp.com/DTDC_products_list.html (follow the aC++ link). http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/2213/libs.htm#slIntro (introductionary concepts). Do you have any evidence that the HP implementation of C++ language breaks the standard and that's why the regex library and format library does not compile on those platform? Hi !! When trying to compile a simple program (just a main and nothing in it) I get a lot of compile error... I'm using VC 6.0 SP5, STLport 4.5.3 and boost 1.29. I would recommend contacting the aCC support people. They are generally quite reasonable. In fact, the hp status tables (which appear a bit out of date) at http://www.boost.org/status/cs-hpux.html are run remotely on a box provided by HP for boost to use. At the point when this was set up, I was investigating whether we should use aCC or g++. I went through and developed a few simple test cases to demonstrate the bugs in a few of the tests. They accepted them, but gave no time line. I think development of aCC was initially really hurt when Daveed Vandevoorde went to EDG, and I'd guess all the linux/compaq hubbub probably hasn't helped to much. Member Function Iterator Adaptor

I'm trying to build a member function iterator adaptor. (Maybe there already is one and I'm not finding it?) This would be an iterator adaptor where the adaptor returns the result of calling a member function of the base iterator. I think this is a pretty straightforward iterator adaptor. What I am missing is the ability to work out the value_type of the iterator. This would be the return type of the member function being used. I thought I could use boost::call_traits< MemberFunction >::value_type, but that returns the entire type of the member function. I think call_traits<> is not what I am looking for. Pointers or suggests would be greatly welcomed. Thanks! ...Duane

using boost graph library in VC++

Hi, I downloaded the boost graph library and extract the zip file to root directory C:\boost_1_29_0 . I tried to use it to develope a project in VC++. I built the example file adj_list_cc.cpp, but the compiler give message "can not open boost/graph/graph_concepts.hpp". Based on the installation on the website, I added 'c:/boost_1_29_0' to the #include<...> line. Then, I builted it again, the compiler said other library could not be opened. I want to know whether I should add 'c:/boost_1_29_0' to all the related #include<...>. Is there an easier way to use the library? Thanks Charlie

[BGL] Using BGL for huge graphs

Hi, has anybody tried using BGL for really huge graphs? I mean graphs that are so big that there's no way to store the whole graph in memory. Any ideas on how it should be implemented? My first thought is that it should be fairly straightforward: simply construct classes that model Sequence or RandomAccessContainer for the VertexList parameter etc. The classes store part of the data in memory and read/write data to disc when necessary. Any pitfalls, gotchas or other stuff I should be aware of before embarking on this? Thanks, /Erik

More on static linkage

I have been trying to link the boost::regex library to a DLL (Release build) without success and I really need help. I have learned something new. Hitherto, I have put this line right above my code in one of my header files, i.e., within the "#if !defined()" block that prevents duplicate inclusion: #define BOOST_REGEX_STATIC_LINK This has no effect on the build whatsoever. The resulting DLL is no bigger and the client will not work if you rename boost_regex_vc6_mdi.dll from its place. You get an error message from the client saying that this file is missing. If, however, I place the line above as the very first line in a header file, then, instead, I simply cannot compile and build the project at all. The compile error I am getting states that there are "multiply defined symbols"! I.e., the symbols defined in the library are being defined twice. This is driving me nuts. Thanks for any help. I am trying to get my DLL to get linked statically with the boost::regex library and having _no success_. I have tried putting this line into one of the header files: #define BOOST_REGEX_STATIC_LINK And I have tried this line, alone and in combination with the above: #define BOOST_REGEX_NO_LIB I have tried putting the .lib file boost_regex_vc6_mdi.lib into the list of includes under Project->Settings->Link, with or without the above lines. Boost and the Lawyers: A Happy Ending (well for us anyway)

Hello again, A while back I posted a series of questions about what other people had done to make their companies lawyers happy about using boost in a commercial project. If you remember, I stated that our lawyers were worried that someone could post someone else's code to boost, passing it of as his own. Our company would then be liable for copyright infringement and other bad things. We thought at the time that we would have to contact each and every boost developer (whose libraries we use) and get them to sign something to say in effect "Yes I wrote this and you have permission to use it". This raised interesting questions like "should there be a standard boost license to make this process less painful"? Well our contracts guy got back to my team of developers. He checked out www.boost.org and did some research on boost. He came to the conclusion that boost was a widely known and used resource, and I guess "trustworthy". All he told us to do was include the boost developers copyright statements on any GUI and to embed said copyright strings into the executable along with ours. Somehow we lucked out.
