I am having trouble getting the boost thread library to work. I am using Borland C++Builder 6 (on Win2k), and I tried the 1.29.0 release and the 1.30.0.b1 beta release and both give me the same errors in the condition.hpp file: line 93: " 'operator!' not implemented in type 'recursive_mutex' for arguments of the same type" and line 96: " 'recursive_mutex::m_mutex' is not accessible" Plus another 5 errors. I tried to look at the condition and recursive_mutex class definitions and I do not understand how they are implemented. Am I using it wrong to get that error? Let me know if you need a code sample. multi_array iterators ??

I am intersted in a simple way to iterate on a multi_array (or better yet a multi_array_view) regardless of dimension or ranges or order of access. I suppose for the entire multi_array one can use the data() method to return a T* and step through the contiguous memory block. But the case for a multi_array_view doesn't not seem nearly so simple taking into account strides, offsets, and degenerate ranges and all. Thanks in advance for any advice.

BCB6 Internal compiler error in "linear_congruential.hpp" from the random library

Hi, to whomever it may concern: I just downloaded boost 1.30 and tried to recompile my libraries and applications. Spirit semantic actions and closures

Hi I have a question about semantic actions which generate the equivalent of synthesized attributes. It seems that the right hand side of the expression below rule = element [rule.val = val_type(some_params)]; will require the type of val in the closure associated with rule to be val_type which has a constructor which looks like val_type::val_type(some_params). Its not clear to me however how I would synthesize an attribute which is a pointer to some type. For example, in the closure I would like the type of synthesized attribute to be val_type* and for the right hand side of assignment above to be val_type(some_params)() which returns a val_type* where the following was true of the () operator : const val_type* val_type::operator () {do something and eventually return a val_type*;} I'd be very grateful if someone could clue me in on how I might do this. thanks venkat

ublas: questions from a newcomer

I am interested in ublas for linear algebra. In addition to the simple operations supported by ublas I will need comprehensive access to lapack for the real work. I see in the wiki that some work has been done in this area. Is this numeric/binding stuff working, and can it be readily extended to the full set of lapack routines? Some kind of meta program to generate lapack interfaces from a parameter spec would be nice (ruby/perl? or just a description of what needs to be done) Then I could happily bring up the interfaces I need. Is there any way to generate vectore and matrices which do not own the data buffer which they provide access to - 'view' or 'sub' objects in other lin alg packages? This would be very valuable to me for interfacing existing code, without duplicating storage and doing unnecessary copies. I found it difficult to determine from the current documentation. I have one worry: Ublas, and most of the boost modules, seems to me not for the faint hearted. They are clearly powerful, but seem to expect a lot from a potential user. Are these facilities aimed at library writers rather than users whoes skill focus may lie in other domains? I am thinking of apl (and related J++ (not java)) which is very powerful, but has only minority appeal because it is too alien and unnatural for ordinary mortals. The advocates take great pride in how powerful a small and almost incomprehensible line of code can be (FFT in one short line etc.), and implicitly how clever they are to generate and understand it. I expect that a user level doc may eventually make ublas/lapack much more approachable by a non computer science mathematician or engineer. Forgive me if the above sounds critical and ungracious for free software, but I want to use boost and I am worried that it may be too demanding for its benefites to be justified for use by the group of people I work with. -- Stuart

If you cannot (or won't) perform the initialization in the constructor initializer, you'll need to reset the shared_array like so: p_data.reset(new uint8[data_length]); Or, in the initializer: c_Packet::c_Packet (const c_Packet & r_packet) : p_data(new uint8[r_packed.data_length]) { data_length = r_packet.data_length; ... } ...and then perform the memcpy. By the way, you are actually sharing this data, right? If not, scoped_array would probably be a better choice for managing resource lifetime. Bjorn Karlsson

regarding the quality of math functions in stl/boost

I've often heard that you should never trust your system implementation of functions like sqrt, exp, sin, cos, rand, etc. Instead, most mathematicians say that one should use an implementation that is known to be accurate up to some order. Unfortunately, using third-party code for these functions hinders portability. I know that boost has a formidable random number generation library that uses the cmath versions of basic math functions. Does the stl standard, or various implementations of stl, make any gaurantees about the accuracy of these basic math functions? Are they safe to use for mathematical applications in practice? Newbie help with date_time

I am updating an old 1992-style application that previously used time_t based time to produce trend graphs of logged data. I am putting in ptime instead, and have come unstuck. The time range of the X-axis in this app is essentially under user control. It can show any period from a few seconds (sub seconds in the new version) up to three years. The labels on the x axis are placed at sensible points for the current range. For example if the graph shows 30 minutes, the ticks on the axis occur at 5 minute intervals; if it is displaying a week they occur on day boundaries. The old version of the program achieves this label placing by using the % operator and doing arithmetic with the seconds that underly time_t. I would like to do something similar with ptime. My attempt went like this: // Get next time (>= start) which falls on an itvl boundary ptime GetNextBoundary2(const ptime& start, const time_duration& itvl) { // Use 1/1/1970 as a base - not ideal but good enough for this const ptime origin(date(1970,1,1)); time_duration start_offset = start - origin; return ptime (start + itvl - nanosec(start_offset.ticks() % itvl.ticks())); } This fails because - among other reasons - although I can get ticks out, nanosec() won't put them back in again. I guess it is normalising on the way in? I feel sure I am going about this the wrong way, but am baffled as to what I should do next. All help gratefully received. Const Graph Property Maps

Hi Guys, I have three interesting questions in regard to graph properties. Please assume Boost 1_29_0. I'm a little slow in upgrading ... ;-) 1. If I define: MyGraph_t const myGraph; Why cannot I get a property map to access my property: typedef boost::property_map<MyGraph_t, MyPropTag_t>::type MyPropMap_t; MyPropMap_t myPropMap = get(MyPropTag_t(), myGraph); Instead I need to use for each access: get(MyPropTag_t(), myGraph, *i) I have noticed that gcc 3.2 complains in regard to conversion to a non-scalar type being similar to that of myGraph without const-ness of the nested property type. What can I do to get normal map access? 2. Why not use a copy constructor if it exists when copying graph elements? Is the existence of a copy constructor a hard-yard to verfiy with MPL? 3. I noticed that remove_edge(...) complains in regard to a missing default constructor of a property object. Don't get me wrong; this happened during an editing mishap and I know that we need regular types here. Why is this required if you are removing an element? Thanks for the pointers/opinions! :-) Matt

Suggest: tuple base class

Hi, I haven't found any discussion of this issue; it's possible I've just missed it. Anyway, the short form is that I'm trying to partially specialize a class for tuple types. I specialize for cons<H, T>, but specialization requires an exact type match, so tuple<...> will fail to match cons<...> and instead fall to the base template<class T> case--which has the wrong behavior. If I assume that the passed type is a tuple, I can use inheritance trickery and inherit from the tuple<...>::inherited case to match the correct case. Of course, this assumes that the template type is a tuple, when I can't make that assumption--I'm using specialization precisely because the type isn't known. I could specialize on tuple<T0...T9>, but that sets another arbitrary max tuple size; it would be nice to be able to match all tuples allowed by the boost::tuple implementation. So: I need a way to determine if a particular type is a tuple type, which would allow me to do the following: template<bool B, class T> class FooIf {}; template<class T> class Foo : public FooIf<is_tuple_type<T>, T> {}; template<class T> class FooIf<true, T> { /* tuple implementation */ }; template<class T> class FooIf<false, T> { /* non-tuple implementation */ }; AFAICT, there's no way to do so at present. I'd like to suggest a way to add this functionality: have cons<> (or tuple<>) inherit from a blank "tuple_base" class. This would let us use boost::is_base_and_derived to provide the is_tuple_type functionality for the code block above. Of course, it's possible I'm just missing a simple way to partially specialize for tuple types, or that such functionality is bad and unecessary. [MPL] Comments for a newbie

Hello everyone, I've only recently taken my first small steps into the world of metaprogramming, and now I've hit a snag. I'm trying to create a metafunction that returns the smallest unsigned integral type with at least the specified number of bits and, if no such type exists, reports an error. For example, ceil_uint<24> (named so for lack of a better name) returns the first member of the list consisting of unsigned char short unsigned int unsigned int long unsigned int whose number of bits is greater than or equal to 24.
