I downloaded the latest version of Python from the website given below and ran it with "rpm --rebuild python2-2.2-2.src.rpm." Python seems to install correctly. I reset my env variables to PYTHON_ROOT=/usr and PYTHON_VERSION=2.2. Yet when I ran bjam, it would say it couldn't find the Python.h file within /usr/include/python2.2/. The directory is there, but its empty. There is an another directory for python1.5. But this version will not compile Boost correctly. Any suggestions or idea of why this is happening? Thanks. Mac OS X link problem

I am using the Boost libraries, specifically the Spirit portions, on Mac OS X Panther, using XCode. Every time I try to compile my program with the Boost libraries I get a linker error: ld: warning prebinding disabled because of undefined symbols ld: Undefined symbols: boost::throw_exception(std::exception const&) Even if I link against all the boost libraries that were created, I still can't get this program to link. The documentation talks about the libraries being compiled with or without BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS, but they don't indicate that the program won't link in either case. What am I doing wrong? ahp

Changing case with regex_format

The following useful Perl expressions seem to have been omitted from regex_format: \l lowercase next char \u uppercase next char \L lowercase till \E \U uppercase till \E \E end case modification Was there a good reason for that? The only way I can see to implement those expressions is to take a copy of regex_format.hpp, then hack _reg_format_aux. I think that it would also be necessary to change the undocumented regex_traits class, to do upper case conversion, as it only seems to do lower casing at present. Is there an easier way? Futures revisited

Hello, During discussions on possible extensions to Boost.Threads, concept of Futures came up rather frequently. Below, I’d like to introduce a particular implementation available at www.rhapsodia.org of which requirements were defined as follows: 1. Provide means to register exception types with a "Future Registry". Rationale: I find it imperative that users should not have to define a list of exception types on each invocation yielding a Future object. Instead, provide the ability to register exception types with a Future Registry and bundle it with Future objects. I feel that compile time registration should be sufficient. 2. Work under the assumption that asynchronous invocations returning Futures and system threads are not coupled. In particular, Futures implementation should not relay on joining with a particular thread to perform synchronization for returning results. Rationale: Although most prevalent, the technique of joining with a particular thread to synchronize on returning result is too limiting. It implies that each task be run on a dedicated thread, specially created to handle it and destroyed to meet with a caller using a Future. Although this approach may be adequate under certain conditions, it generally tends to be expensive on system resources and disorganizes the application. For example, it’s impossible to control the number of concurrently running threads. It may also perform poorly if executed code happens to run shortly as the overhead of creating a thread and cleaning up after it may be significant. More robust approach is to use a queue and a thread pool for running tasks. This adds complexity on the synchronization side, as we can no longer rely on a lifetime of a thread to join with Future’s result. 3. Ability to utilize Futures with arbitrary code without explicit support for them. Rationale: For implementation to be widely adopted, it should be possible to turn just about any function call into a Future-armored asynchronous invocation. No explicit thread synchronization primitives should be used as well. 4. Implement using existing Boost.Threads facilities only. Rationale: Boost.Threads library provides enough support to implement Futures paradigm that meets requirements listed here. 5. STL and Boost compatible. For example, storing Futures in an STL container. Be strongly typed. Futures implementation and usage patterns must naturally coexist with STL and Boost code. Constructor in for adjacency_matrix missing?

Hello, since some weeks I'm using the BGL. It's really a great library. But I'm a bit confused about the documentation for the template class adjacency_matrix. According to the BGL-book and also the online documentation there should be three constructors for adjacency_matrix: adjacency_matrix(vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) template <typename EdgeIterator> adjacency_matrix(EdgeIterator first, EdgeIterator last, vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) and template <typename EdgeIterator, typename EdgePropertyIterator> adjacency_matrix(EdgeIterator first, EdgeIterator last, EdgePropertyIterator ep_iter, vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) but actually in boost/graph/adjacency_matrix.hpp is only the constructor adjacency_matrix(vertices_size_type n_vertices) is defined. So it's not possible to construct an adjacency_matrix from a pair of iterators (as it is possible for adjacency_list). Has this constructor been removed or never been implemented? Such a constructor would be very useful for me. Where is the jam_src Makefile?

Hi, I am trying to compile a bjam executable from scratch (under Linux). In the file: boost_1_31_0/tools/build/jam_src/README it says: The Makefile (UNIX, NT), build.com (VMS), Build.mpw (Mac MPW) are for bootstrapping. Once jam is built, it can rebuild itself. But I can't find the Makefile anywhere! It is not in that directory, and I can't find it anywhere else? Am I blind, or is it missing? Thanks, Mark.

Boost (& Visual Studio 2003) for Dummies?

Hey all, My need is to combine a program I've written with some linear algebra. I can generally do most basic tasks in C/C++, but not yet derived classes and the like. Anyway, not wanting to reinvent the wheel, my searches revealed that 'boost' might be a good source of code for some math functions I will need, essentially matrix operations. I read the getting started page http://boost.org/more/getting_started.html, all I managed to do was run the batch file in the tools/build folder, but I don't think this installed any libraries, or if it did, it didn't put them where I need them..I don't have much experience working from the command line in Windows. Boost looks good, can anyone help me get started? Thanks, Matt

I have one more question that I have a proposed FAQ answer for, but my "answer" is based purely on what I think it should be, not an understanding of the law. The point that confuses me is: If a program uses boost, the binary distro doesn't need to contain the license, but it is a derivative work. As I understand it, a derivative work contains exclusive rights both the "preexisting material" author and "contributed material" author. This in turn means there must be some form of agreement as to how the derivative work can be distributed. The boost license seems to deal with that by saying that the derivative work must contain the boost license wording unless the derivative work is object code. That seems to result in a reasonably clear rule for derivative works that are not object code. What I'm not sure on is whether the grant to allow derivative works, combined with permission to omit the license wording from object code, gives the "contributing author" the right to distribute the object code "derived work" under any terms/license that author choses? A: No. That is use, but not derivation. But if instead of #include, you pasted in a legally significant portion of <boost/any_old_header.hpp> , that would make your program a derived work. Hi, I have not been able to build version 1.31.0. I run bjam -sTOOLS=gcc-nocygwin Basically, I get a lot of undefined references from the linker. lambda / boost usage questions

hello, I don't have much experience with boost, so I'm having problems getting boost lambda to work...hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I have: class Song {public: string artist( ) const { return m_artist } string title( ) const { return m_title } private: string m_artist, m_title; } typedef boost::shared_ptr<Song> pSong; vector<pSong> c; and I am trying to use lambda to find a song in c which matches a certain artist and title...something like iterator it = find_if( c.begin(), c.end(), something ) but I havn't figured out what "something" should look like I've tried find_if(begin(),end(), (_1->artist() == "a1" && _1->title = "t1" ) ); but the compiler -- or I =) -- doesn't seem to know the type of _1 --> error: base operand of `->' has non-pointer type `const boost::lambda::lambda_functor<boost::lambda::placeholder<1> >' If I try it = find_if(begin(),end(), boost::bind(&Song::artist,_1) == "a1" ); it fails because "_1" is ambiguos (defined as lambda/placeholder and boost/arg ) using boost::lambda::bind (and not including the "normal" bind ) gives a bunch cryptic errors... I've tried several other variants with lambda / lambda::bind / boost::bind but I havn't figured it out... can anyone help me out? I'd also like to know what's the difference between boost::bind and boost::lambda::bind ? Also... is there a way to know when a lambda object is going to be constructed?, it's probably just that I don't know much about the BLL, but in cases where you have several nested lambdas and binds, I'm not sure which lambda objects will get constructed. regards, luis

bug in numeric_cast<unsigned long>, <unsigned char>, and <unsigne d int> in gcc 3.3.2

Hello, I am seeing a bug that the regression tests miss for numeric_cast<unsigned long> with gcc 3.3.2. Specifically, the following code is throwing an exception: double small_value = 1.25; unsigned long l=0; l = numeric_cast<unsigned long>(small_value); // throws exception! unsinged char c=0; c = numeric_cast<unsigned char>(small_value); // throws exception! I am under the impression that numeric_cast is supposed to accept losses of precision (by truncating the fractional values), and to throw exceptions only if there is a range or sign error. Is this so? This error happens only when I try to cast a value with a non-zero fraction; i.e. 1.25 breaks but 1.0 is fine. It only occurs for unsigned types -- signed int, char, and long appear to work correctly. I have found the same incorrect behavior with gcc 3.3.2 on both solaris and linux. Using sunpro on solaris, the same code runs correctly. The regression tests don't catch this, since they only test numeric_cast with integral values 1 and LONG_MAX. Any ideas? Boost.Test and Threads

Hi After our migration from Boost 1.30.2 to Boost 1.31.0 several multithreaded tests no longer work stable. We tracked it down to the macros BOOST_UT_LOG_BEGIN and BOOST_UT_LOG_END. When one protects this macro calls with a mutex, the tests work stable again. After the investigation we found 'Support for the testing of multithreaded programs.' on the open issues list of Boost.Test. Does this mean that Boost.Test is not thread-safe at all? Do we misuse Boost.Test by calling things like BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL, BOOST_CHECK and BOOST_REQUIRE concurrently from different threads? Any clarification on this topic is welcome. Best regards, Peter.
