David- When you asked me to run the following lines: bjam -f- "-sTOOLS=mingw" install ECHO $(TOOLS) ; ^Z I see the following: bjam -f- "-sTOOLS=mingw" install (hundreds of lines of error text go by here) ECHO $(TOOLS) ; reply is: sh: ./TOOLS: is a directory ...and nothing is displayed after entering ctrl-Z :) The reply to ECHO $(TOOLS) ; seems odd. I doubt that this is what you were expecting. There *is* a 'tools' directory under boost_1_31_0, but not a 'TOOLS' directory. Case-sensitivity issues? I have also run the following: bjam -d+5 "-sTOOLS=mingw" install > bug.out Note that not everything is captured in 'bug.out'. I see hundreds of lines of the following on the console: The system cannot find the path specified. This is not surprising as I don't have VC7 installed. Source of Boost Graph Library

Please can anyone tell me where to find the source files for the Boost Graph Library? I downloaded boost_1_31_0.tar.gz and expected to find the source files in boost-1.31.0/libs/graph/src, but the only files there are for something called graphviz.

shared_ptr: LWM versus atomic_count?

I've been perusing the source code of <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> and noticed that it uses the <boost/detail/shared_count.hpp> class to do reference counting and not <boost/detail/atomic_count.hpp> (unless BOOST_NO_MEMBER_TEMPLATES or BOOST_MSVC6_MEMBER_TEMPLATES are defined). Can anyone comment on the reasoning behind using a lightweight mutex-protected counter instead of an atomic counter? I'd think that an atomic counter would be faster, but I suspect that there is a good reason for protecting the count with a mutex. building boost under mingw: bjam invokes VC7??

Hello, all- I recently attempted to build and install boost 1.31.0 using msys (i.e., mingw). I enter the boost directory and start bjam with: bjam -sTOOL=mingw install ...and then I see bjam invoking vc7 instead of gcc. For example: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\VC7\bin\cl" ... followed by many, many errors, as VC7 is not installed on my system. I don't understand why bjam thinks it should be using VC7. Can anyone offer any advice or a workaround? I'm using the latest version of both msys and mingw under Windows 2000, and mingw is installed *under* msys, if that makes a difference. Limitation of boost::protect of Boost.Bind

Hi, I would like to bind a function which takes a boost::function<void> as parameter, let's say void caller(boost::function<void (void)>& f) { f(); } void foo() {} boost::function<void (void)> foo_fun = &foo; boost::bind(caller, foo_fun)(); But what if the function has a parameter, for example void bar(int i) {} How can I create the folling a function object? boost::function<void (int)> The function object should take an int, bind it to bar and then call caller with the resulting nullary function. boost::function<void (int)> bar_fun = &bar; // doesn't work because caller and bar are being composed. boost:bind(caller, boost::bind(bar_fun, _1)) // doesn't work because caller doesn't accept a unary function. boost:bind(caller, boost::protect(boost::bind(bar_fun, _1))) Does anyone have a clean solution for that? boost::protect doesn't provide the option to evaluate the arguments (_1) but _not_ perform a composition. Hi, How can I inform an error from a semantic action? Consider the following code: rule = IDENTIFIER[ callback_a( m_varBinder, &VarBinder::bind ) ]; callback_a is an actor allowing member calls in semantic actions. VarBinder::bind receives an identifier and try to locate it in an external symbol table. If bind fails, I like to inform a parser error back to Spirit. How can I do that? Help with tuples - repeated members

I've been playing with Boost's tuples library, but I'm having some trouble working through a wrinkle: I have some routines that use tuple<int>, tuple<int, int>, etc., up to tuple<int, int, int, int, int>. I'd like to be able to declare these objects using an alternative notation, along the lines of: tuple_clone<int, 1>, tuple_clone<int, 2>, tuple_clone<int, 3>, etc. The objective would be to allow me to write a function template that looked something like this: template <int N> tuple_clone<int, N> fn(tuple_clone<int, N-1> t) { tuple_clone<int, N> ret; ret.get_head() = getValue(); ret.get_tail() = t; return ret; } Each time I try to write tuple_clone, though, I end up stumped. Is it possible to write something like this, while leveraging the tuples library? Or is there a different approach I ought to look into? FW: "memory access violation" in boost::serialization

Hi, I encountered the following little problem: I would like to use the following datastructures with boost::serialize: struct Match {}; typedef std::string Key; typedef tst< Match, Key > TernarySearchTree; //this one has a shared_ptr typedef std::vector< TernarySearchTree > Trees; typedef std::map< std::string, Trees > Symbols; I have defined some serialize overloads so saving goes fine, but when loading I get a "memory acces violation" inside the following code: { boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(ifs); ia >> symbols_; } More specific, inside <boost/serializiton/shared_count.hpp> void add_ref_copy() { #if defined(BOOST_HAS_THREADS) mutex_type::scoped_lock lock(mtx_); #endif ++use_count_; } Which constructs a scoped_lock, and there, the "explicit scoped_lock(lightweight_mutex & m): m_(m)" seems to go wrong. What could be the reason? The more since all worked fine (saving and loading) when I used a simple vector of tst's. Is it not possible to use a map of string/vector (the error seems to suggest the library failing when copying vector to map - eg ++use_count of the shared_ptr inside the TST). Hi, I've also tried to compile RegEx with Forte 8. Did you try that? I think I managed to get things to compile, but unfortunately, when I try to compile it in 64-bit mode, we still get problems. I have been looking at Andre Alexandrescu's book Modern C++ Design. He has the Loki library in there. That has all of the pieces that are needed. Does anyone know of any issue with mixing Boost, ATL and Loki? A side question is has anyone looked at merging the Loki library into the Boost library. It seems like a really great fit as the Loki library deals with a different set of problems. I'm trying to use boost.threads in my project, as they look like the cleanest cross-platform threading interface I've seen in a while, and I'm running into a wee problem convincing the libraries to build. My setup: Windows 2000 SP 4 Microsoft Visual C++ 7.1 (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\VC7\) MS SDK (U:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK) Boost 1.31.0 (C:\boost_1_31_0, installing to C:\boost) Cygwin is installed, but not present in PATH; I am not using cygwin to build this project, only to run PostgreSQL. Python is not installed, as I have no need for it. Visual C++ 6.0 is also installed (for legacy projects), but not present in PATH. bjam is present in PATH, as downloaded from Sourceforge. Adapting Iterator Adaptor

We are still using boost 1.27. We are getting to the point that there are features of the latest boost release that we want to use. Of course there are barriers. One barrier is iterator_adaptor. Iterator_adapter went through a significant rewrite. We have several (>10) iterators written using the older implementation. We are trying to gauge the impact of changing to the latest boost. Do we need to largely rewrite these iterators? Is the interface close enough for this to be a reasonably simple task? Simply how do we get our old iterators to the new adaptor? Feature request for boost::filesystem

Hello everybody, I'm new to this mailing list. The first thing I should say is I love boost and I think it is a great library and I'm really thankful to all its contributors. Now, that being said, I'm sending this email to ask about a feature in the boost::filesystem library that I believe would be valuable to have. Currently the only library that supports file and directory operations in boost is boost::filesystem. Thanks tot hat library I don't have to use platform specific file manipulation rutines for things like copying a file, deleting all files in a directory, iterating through a directory, etc. Now, all the operations in boost::filesystem take a boost::filesystem::path as an object encapsulating a platform independent "path" to a file or a directory. My problem is this path can only be built using a single char (ANSI) character string. This doesn't allow me to use boost::filesystem in windows with Unicode support since I cannot convert a wide string (UTF16) path to a boost::filesystem::path object. I believe it must not be too difficult to add Unicode path support to boost::filesystem since only the "path" class would need to be modified I think. Another small feature I think could be interesting is a convenience function to set the current path (cd operation). There is a function already to get the current path but not to set it. This is totally a shot in the dark, but the last time I had this problem, my static class members inside a gcc library were not getting constructed because I wasn't using gcc as my linker. i've written a little test to see if i've installed boost properly on my mac #include <boost/thread.hpp> #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> #include <boost/bind.hpp> #include <iostream> void simple_thread( boost::shared_ptr<int> p ) { std::cout << (*p) << std::endl; } int main (int argc, char * const argv[]) { boost::thread_group threads; for ( int i = 0 ; i < 5 ; i++ ) { boost::shared_ptr<int> p( new int(i) ); threads.create_thread( boost::bind( &simple_thread, p ) ); } threads.join_all( ); return 0; } in xcode (a C++ Tool project) this compiles fine, however on runtime i get the following error: ZeroLink: unknown symbol '__ZN5boost12thread_groupC1Ev' boost_test has exited due to signal 6 (SIGABRT). using g++ i get the following errors (ignoring warnings) g++ main.cpp -o boost_test -I/usr/local/include/boost-1_31 -L/usr/local/lib ld: Undefined symbols: boost::thread_group::create_thread(boost::function0<void, std::allocator<boost::function_base> > const&) boost::thread_group::join_all() boost::thread_group::thread_group[in-charge]() boost::thread_group::~thread_group [in-charge]() i originally built boost using the command line sudo bjam -sTOOLS=darwin install can anyone help me with what i am missing here? thanks --Tristan

errors building boost on Mac OS X

Hi, i get a few errors when building the following libraries on Mac OS X 10.3.4 libboost_test_exec_monitor libboost_unit_test_framework i'm building using bjam, and the following command line bjam -sTOOLS-darwin install sniplets of the errors are as follows: darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_prg_exec_monitor-d-1_31.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: cpp_main(int, char**) .... darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_test_exec_monitor-d-1_31.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: test_main(int, char**) .... darwin-Link-DyLib-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_unit_test_framework.dylib/darwin/debug/shared-linkable-true/libboost_unit_test_framework-d-1_31.dylib ld: Undefined symbols: init_unit_test_suite(int, char**) am i missing something here? thanks --Tristan

Problem using exported C++ functions to python

Hi, I have the following type of functions in a class say "MyClass", which I have exported to python. 1) func1(long *plong) 2) func2(TempClass **pptempclass) (where TempClass is some other class) Now, I exported these using the following: .def("func1", &MyClass::func1) .def("func2", &MyClass::func2) and it compiled well. But now when I try to use them in a python script, I have no clue as to how I create and pass: 1) a long pointer as argument to func1 2) a double pointer to TempClass as argument to func2 How do I achieve this behaviour? 1) Do I have to wrap the above functions> If yes, then how? How will they be used in python then? OR 2) I can still use the same functions in python but then how to create (instantiate and initialize) the above pointers in python? Thanks, Mayank
