Hello, Suppose that I have a function that takes a uniform random number generator as an argument, e.g. double foo(mt19937 &urng) { double x = uniform_real<double> (0.0, 10.0) (urng); double y = uniform_real<double> (5.0, 7.0) (urng); return (x*y); } Is there a way to make the choice of random number generator arbitrary (i.e. not limited to mt19937) without making the function a template? Alternatively, is there a better way of passing around the basic uniform random number generator? The reason for the no-template rule is that I would like to pass a URNG to a virtual function in a class, and I would really not like to have to make the class itself a template dependent on the type of URNG. [boost][filesystem] Rename throws exception if target file exists

I need to achieve an atomic move to replace an existing file. Is there anyway to do this using boost::filesystem? I thought rename would do this but it throws the following exception: " boost::filesystem::rename: File exists:" when the target file exists. -Sanjit

Hello, I cannot compile the components_on_edgelist.cpp example with gcc 4.5/4.2 and VC++2009. I am using Boost 1.42 It trows errors on >c:\boost\include\boost-1_42\boost\graph\incremental_components.hpp(178) : error C2825: 'ParentIterator': must be a class or namespace when followed by '::' 1> c:\boost\include\boost-1_42\boost\graph\incremental_components.hpp(141) : see reference to function template instantiation 'void boost::component_index<IndexType>::build_index_lists<ParentIterator,boost::typed_identity_property_map<T>>(ParentIterator,const ElementIndexMap &)' being compiled 1> with 1> [ 1> IndexType=int, 1> ParentIterator=const unsigned int *, 1> T=size_t, 1> ElementIndexMap=boost::typed_identity_property_map<size_t> 1> ] and more... Are there some work around ? Actually I would like to construct disjoint sets based on vector<Edge>, where Edge is pair<uint, uint>. [Boost MPI]Problems with instalation the boost in visual 2008

Hello: I'm trying to install the boost libraries MPI, but so far I have not been successful. So far the steps I performed are: 1) Run the file in the folder bjam.exe of boost, this procedure creates libs, some of the folders boost, but skips the folder of MPI, which does not generate the appropriate libs. 2) When the library is installed tells me that you must modify the user-config.jam, adding "usign MP" I, for installation. 3) After editing the file is placed bjam command-with-mpi install, and start the installation indicating that boost jump MPI library. Another way I try it from the compiler to use Visual stdio 2008, from the terminal set, follow these steps: 1) Set within the boost folder 2) Run the file bajm.exe, here starts the installation again skipping the boost folder MPI. 3) When the library is installed tells me that you must modify the user-config.jam, adding "usign MP" I, for installation. 4) After editing the file put the following command: C: \ boost_1_42_0 \ boost_1_42_0> bjam - build-type = complete - toolset = MSVC - build-dir = C: \ src \ boost_1_42_0 \ build \ 90 \ 32 - stagedir = C: \ src \ boost_1_36_0 \ stage \ 90-32 stage. This line starts installing again but skip the folder you need. The truth is no longer what happens, because so far I can already detect the libraries, all I need are generating. Lib, which tells me that the compiler can not locate the libs are missing me the following: • libboost_mpi-vc90-mt.lib • libboost_mpi-vc90-mt-1_36.lib • boost_mpi-vc90-mt.lib • boost_mpi-vc90-mt-1_36.dll • boost_mpi-vc90-mt-1_36.lib Someone can help me fix this, scheduled to begin in MPI boost, I would greatly appreciate. Boost Graph: why can't get() take a const argument?

Hi, I have a question about line 54 of the canonical_ordering example: graph g(6); ... property_map<graph, edge_index_t>::type e_index = get(edge_index, g); If I'm reading the Boost source code correctly, the get function's graph argument is declared const. This makes sense intuitively because, well, why would the graph need to be modified in order to retrieve a property? So the graph parameter passed to get() could be made const, correct? Like this: graph g(6); ... const graph g2 = g; property_map<graph, edge_index_t>::type e_index = get(edge_index, g2); However, the above change gives a compiler error: conversion from ‘boost::adj_list_edge_property_map<boost::undirected_tag, int, const int&, size_t, const boost::property<boost::edge_index_t, int, boost::no_property>, boost::edge_index_t>’ to non-scalar type ‘boost::adj_list_edge_property_map<boost::undirected_tag, int, int&, size_t, boost::property<boost::edge_index_t, int, boost::no_property>, boost::edge_index_t>’ requested Can anyone explain why? I realize that this may be more of a C++ language question rather than proto specific. But I will ask it anyway. I wrote a transform that infers some type information for the placeholders from an expression. Say I have the expression _1 = _2 + 1, the transform can tell me that the type of the first argument to operator() of the expression wrapper should be "T &" and the type of the second should be "const T&". Hi, I have ordered a new copy of /C++/ Template /Metaprogramming. /I am trying to do this stuff the Boost way and now I have a pretty good handle on using regex. [serialization] anyone using portable binary archives?

Is anyone here using portable binary archive? It seems that serialization by pointer doesn't work. Example demo_portable_archive doesn't link after changing "char c" to "A* c". I don't understand why, it is also not listed in TODO http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/libs/serialization/doc/todo.html polymorphic_portable_binary_archive doesn't compile at all, it includes missing boost/archive/detail/polymorphic_oarchive_dispatch.hpp I tested boost 1.42, 1.43, msvc71, msvc90. Hi, Some features of accumulator, such as variance needs to compute powers of quantities. What happens if the power of quantity is not the same as the type of the original quantity? An example is a boost::units::quantity, accumulator_set< quantity<si::energy>, stats<tag::mean, tag::moment<2> > > acc; //not compiling because of moment<2> acc(1.2*si::joules); ... I am trying to decide whether the argument type to a function taking a proto expression should be "const T&" or "T&" based on the expression itself. Hi there, I'm trying to use boost regular expression for the first time and I'm having some trouble getting it right. Current I'm trying to find all files with the a certain extension (by also using boost::filesystem), which should be simple, but I'm probably missing something. Here is the expression I'm using. boost::regex regularExpression; std::string expression("\.\/\w+(\.txt)"); try { regularExpression.assign(expression, boost::regex_constants::icase); ... std::string testAgainst((*iterPath).string()); if (boost::regex_match(testAgainst, regularExpression)) ... which (I thought) should match all string with the pattern "./filename.txt" but it does not. Using "\.\/\ReadMe(\.txt)" for example, correctly matches the ./ReadMe.txt file, so the \w+ seems not do what I'm reading from [1] where (\w+\.) is used to match part of a URL. Anyone can shine some light on this, or point me to another good reading about regular expression with boost? Note: I'm using version 1.34.1 because I have to. Thanks, S. boost and Obj-C++ ("id" variables)

Hi, in some headers, boost is using "id" as variable name. This makes is impossible to use those headers in Obj-C (or better Obj-C++) code, because "id" has a special meaning there. I worked around by renaming these id variables in the boost headers for every new boost release (hoping that it will be fixed in the next release), but this is ugly. Now I looked into the boost trac, and found that this problem was reported - and fixed! - multiple times. I can read from the trac that it SHOULD haven been fixed in the latest 1.43.0 (if I read that correct). It's fixed and it's Milestone is 1.43.0. So I downloaded boost 1.43.0 - but the problem is still there. Still "id" variables. How can this be? Doesn't this mean there are serious problems in source code control? Or hasn't the fix just not made its way into 1.43 - where can I read in which version a fix really appears? how to compare fusion adapted structures

Hi, in my project I do have a lot of fusion adapted structures (due to use for/with spirit). Now I want to compare them. How to reuse the informations? In the example attached, I show the (imo) complicated way using fusion::vector_tie. I would like reuse the BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_STRUCT macro since it generates tag_of<>, struct_member<>, struct_member_name<> , struct_size<> etc. At http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/fusion/doc/html/fusion/extension/… there is the full blown feature shown how to adapt the structure for a fusion iterator. What do I really need for simple comparing? Is it the way to use? Even simpler one? Since the project is involving, a simple and && combine of the members isn't save - easy to lost one ... Hello, I have a class that stores a private member a shared_ptr<T> that points to a dynamically allocated instance of T. A getter member function returns T&. I now realise that in a snippet, I would like to store a new shared_ptr<T> to that returned object. T& t = myinstance.getT(); I would like to store t in a shared_ptr, ie increment the count of shared pointers Do I do: shared_ptr<T> desiredPointer( &t ); will this increment the count of shared pointers to t? Newbie question filesystem

I lost my copy of metaprogramming. I'm ordering another tomorrow. But here is what I'm up to. I've been doing the virtual path thing with old MFC classes and such, like: C:\\cpp\\RA_User_2_2\\$(TEST) or $(PATH)\$(TEST) etc. What I'm trying to do is derive from filesystem and wrap this virtual stuff around it to break away from the old stuff I have, (ugly stuff). I've gotten to the point where I'd like to snap different virtual sets in and don't want to build on the old stuff, filesystem is really cool. I have a client that has several clients and wants to set his configurations on the fly to handle them, I do it in code for myself, but it is not runtime. Anyway... So I started with: template<class String, class Traits> class basic_vpath; typedef basic_vpath< std::string, path_traits > vpath; template<class String, class Traits> class basic_vpath :public basic_path< String, Traits > { }; But I don't understand why I can just fine: CString strUserDirectory= _T("C:\\cpp\\RA_User_2_2\\$(TEST)"); path aPath( strUserDirectory ); But can't convert from CString, or even std::string with: CString strUserDirectory= _T("C:\\cpp\\RA_User_2_2\\$(TEST)"); vpath aPath( strUserDirectory ); I'm trying to extend what I see in path.hpp without success, and I've tried lots of stuff. [Serialization] Newbie question

Hi I have a need to serialize some STL containers in our C++ application. We build for Linux and Windows but do not currently use Boost. Adoption of Boost would seem to demand that we install the complete Boost library on all our development machines. This is straightforward but would be a serious project decision. Would it be possible to use the Serialization library by just adding the Serialization header files to our project directory and compiling them with our project? Perhaps later we could install Boost in full ... Best regards David

file_descriptor_sink vs. pclose

I've been having difficulty using iostreams::file_descriptor_sink with popen in Linux. The problem is that popen() requires a matching pclose() rather than a close(). Now, file_descriptor_sink has a close_on_exit flag that, when set to false, supposedly prevents it from calling close() on the underlying file descriptor, but it calls close() anyway. Is this a bug in boost or am I doing it wrong? As a workaround I can call flush () on the iostream and then pclose() on the filehandle, but it seems like it would be better to actually close the iostream. I've tested the example below using boost 1.39 and using 1.43 from subversion. how to make a thread sleep forever

Is there an elegant way to make the current thread go to sleep forever? I simply want the current thread to sleep indefinitely, i.e. until a call to exit() or similar. Obviously I could call sleep() in a loop, or I could create an artificial deadlock, but I was wondering if there is a more elegant way? Cheers, Alex

I'm investigating BCP and have at least one question. When I use --list with BCP to generate a list of dependencies for the serialization library, I get among otherthings: ... boost/iterator.hpp boost/iterator/detail/config_def.hpp boost/iterator/detail/config_undef.hpp boost/iterator/detail/enable_if.hpp boost/iterator/detail/facade_iterator_category.hpp boost/iterator/filter_iterator.hpp boost/iterator/interoperable.hpp boost/iterator/iterator_adaptor.hpp boost/iterator/iterator_categories.hpp boost/iterator/iterator_facade.hpp boost/iterator/iterator_traits.hpp boost/iterator/transform_iterator.hpp ... The first one - boost/iterator.hpp - what I wonder about. I searched the files in used in the serialization library and I could find on direct usage of the convenience header "boost/iterator.hpp". I'm guess that this is a secondary dependency introduced by something I've included directly. So a) Is this a good guess? b) Is there an easy way of determining which of the things I'm including is including boost/iterator.hpp? I've taken care while working on the serialization library to minimize gratuitous dependencies. It seems that other libraries might be including the "convenience headers" which subverts my intention to minimize dependencies. Hi, Could someone help me understand why my fairly simple spirit::qi parser does not work as I expect? I try to parse string "2 c" into the structure: struct Data { char val; }; std::map<int, Data> map; such that the map contains one element with an int 2 as key and char "c" wrapped into structure Data as the value. I am using Boost 1.42. The rules for the grammar w/o semantic actions are as follows. value = qi::char_; list = (qi::int_ >> value); // the start rule I know the grammar could be expressed more simply; my real life example is more complex and makes sense, but I tried to reduce it as much as possible. Dear all, Am I right in believing that the bool returned in the function below is meant to signal to the user whether there is an edge between u and v or not? std::pair<edge_descriptor, bool> edge(vertex_descriptor u, vertex_descriptor v, const adjacency_list& g) The only explanation that the online documentation provides for this function is: "Returns an edge connecting vertex u to vertex v in graph g." Environment: Windows XP Boost 1.40 Problem: Canceling an asio::deadline_timer doesn't pass an operation_aborted value to the timer handler. --------------- From the async_wait doc: For each call to async_wait(), the supplied handler will be called exactly once. The handler will be called when: * The timer has expired. * The timer was cancelled, in which case the handler is passed the error code boost::asio::error::operation_aborted. --------------- When I call my Restart() function (which calls the cancel() function) my TimerHandler() receives an err value of 0. When the timer is allowed to expire, the TimerHandler doesn't get called at all. Hi all! Currently i'm working on a project and i'm using boost::state_chart for implementing my asyncrone statecharts. Everything seems ok so far. But i have a small problem. My used client library, which is handled in the statemachine, throws sometime an exception. I said to me: "Not a problem, i will use an exception_translator." At home i made a simple project under Linux/g++ 4.4 (-Wall -pedantic) and MSVC2008 . No problems. At work we use MSVC2005 SP1 and boost 1.42.0. There i cant compile my simple statechart example. (currently i dont have the error messages here at my PC). The documentation states at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/statechart/doc/tutorial.html#Exce… <----------------------------------------> Discriminating Exceptions .... Unfortunately, this idiom (using throw; inside a try block nested inside a catch block) does not work on at least one very popular compiler. If you have to use one of these platforms, you can pass a customized exception translator class to the state_machine class template. I've followed the doc's 'Static Libraries and Serialization' approach. To move the serialize implementation from the header to the cpp file for my classes in my hierarchy which are serialized through base class pointer. Which runs on MSVC8, after linking with /OPT:NOREF. Unfortunately the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORTxxx facilities appear to be optimized away on gcc/xcode, even though all of the 'strip' settings are off. What approach are others taking to resolve this? Robert's reply to Emil Dotchevski on Sep 25, 2008 suggests that explicitly calling ar.register(static_cast<myType *>(0)); is the only portable way to ensure registration, is this still the case? Should explicit registration be done in combination with or en lieu of BOOST_CLASS_EXPORTxxx? Thanks, Jeff

[Serialization]Substituting std::istringstream for text_iarchive?

We have encountered a problem during deserialization via boost::archive::text_iarchive. It is somehow related to the gcc (4.4.1 via MinGW) Windows implementation of the std::stream, that is the parameter of the constructor of text_iarchive. The exact same code caused no problems on a Linux machine (with gcc 4.4.1 as well). The setup is a multi-threaded application (that causes the issue) with frequent deserializations on different threads. The problem is in short: 1: MessagePtr msg; // the structure to be deserialized below 2: std::istringstream archive_stream(buffer); // buffer contains the data, it is a simple char[] array 3: boost::archive::text_iarchive archive(archive_stream, 0); //constructor of the text_iarchive for deserialize 4: archive >> msg; // the deserialization The line causing the problem is the second and third one: in the MinGW implementation of istringstream handling there seems to be some static variables working in the background, and without proper protection of these lines, eventually the application is terminated improperly. Important, that the buffer above is thread-binded, thus it is surely not modified in the background. Using global boost::mutex-es solve the problem: boost::mutex istringstream_locker; //global , local mutexes doesn't work as the behaviour is bound to the std::stream implementation (...) istringstream_locker.lock(); std::istringstream archive_stream(buffer); boost::archive::text_iarchive archive(archive_stream, 0); istringstream_locker.unlock(); (...) However this being a frequently used code, we are wondering if there is any better (more time effective) solution or workaround. (Note: we tried using the boost/format/alt_sstream, but we couldn't get it to work.) Or maybe we can substitute text_iarchive with something else that doesnt require an std::stream? It is possible to declare a struct and use it to hold vertex or edge properties, rather than using the property_map interface, e.g. struct tagFOO { int length; byte color; }FOO; etc. How can I do this? [units] (controlled) implicit conversion

Hi, I took much labour in defining an extra system of units (atomic units). It works very well and it also defines (optionaly) default conversion from atomic to SI units. The problem that I have now is that all the conversion has to be done explicitly. I understand that this way of doing thing is by design. But for some formulas I would like to allow implicit conversion, for example when adding energies in SI and energies in atomic units (I don't care which direction the conversion is done since I will transform to one of the two at the end of the formula). On top of that the Units Manual says: "Safety and the potential for unintended conversions leading to precision loss and hidden performance costs. Options are provided for forcing implicit conversions between specific units to be allowed. " The question is which are the "Options provided for forcing implicit conversion"? What follow is an example: What I want is some controlled implicit conversion (even better is this conversion are allowed inside a certain program scope). Note that line 4 doesn't work: quantity<si::energy> e1(3.*si::joules); quantity<atomic::energy> e2(4.*atomic::hartree); quantity<atomic::energy> e3(e1); //works e1 = e2; //doesn't work e1 = quantity<si::energy>(e2); //works cout<<e1<<'\n'<<e2<<'\n'<<e3<<endl; note that the third line works because somewhere I defined a conversion_factor plus a default_conversion between units in the different systems. And it works because the conversion is explicit. Now the fourth line doesn't work, it gives an error (see at end). comenting the third line compiles. I even tried defining a conversion for this particular units, but still doesn't work. [Serialization] fast binary objects in portable archive

Hello, my goal is fast portable serialization when 95% of data is in large binary objects. 1) binary_archive is fast, but nonportable. 2) text_archive is portable, but ~50x slower. 3) portable_binary_archive looks like solution, but I'm not able to use it to serialize by pointer. Problem can be demonstrated in demo_portable_archive.cpp of boost 1.42 by changing "char c;" to "A* c;" and "c(std::rand())" to "c(0)". scaled units are a great feature of boost.units, however it seems complicated to (explicitly) create variables in such units. This is the way I found to create a variable that stores a quantity like GigaPascals: using boost::units; typedef make_scaled_unit<si::pressure, scale<10, static_rational< 9> > >::type gpa_unit; gpa_unit GPa; quantity<gpa_unit> p(1.*GPa); //or p(1.*si::giga*si::pascal); the question is, is there a simpler way of doing this? for example, just quantity<giga<si::pressure> > p = ...; //values are converted/stored in giga pascals. I could add some "metafunction": template<class Unit> giga{ typedef make_scaled_unit<Unit, scale<10, static_rational< 9> > >::type unit; }; and use it like quantity<giga<si::pressure>::unit> p; and even specialize for femto, atto, mega, kile, etc. I this already implemented in some other way? I have a parent process fork off a child and pass the int value to the child indicating what the native socket file descriptor it should use to receive communication from the parent process. bjam fails on clang in unix

It currently is not possible to build bjam with clang on unix, as the bjam files seems to be broken. Is there any change a bjam expert could have a quick look? Hopefully it will not require too major modifications. The darwin one works fine. I get the following output. I have created a small project that exhibits consistently the problem. This test comprises of the following components: - BaseDll.dll - TestSer.exe - linked with BaseDll.dll. - ExportDll.dll - linked with BaseDll.dll. There are three classe classes (all serializable): - polymorphic_base implemented inside BaseDll.dll; - polymorphic_derived1 derived from polymorphic_base and implemented inside BaseDll.dll - polymorphic_derived2 derived from polymorphic_base and implemented inside ExportDll.dll TestSer.exe loads ExportDll.dll dynamically via ::LoadLibrary() and calls the the function entry_point() exported by ExportDll.dll using ::GetProcAddress(). Both main() in TestSer.exe and entry_point() in ExportDll.dll create an object polymorphic_derived1 (i.e., the class defined inside BaseDll.dll) and display its address, respectively. Please note, there is no serialization involved. Results: ============================================================= Using boost 1.42 this test fails due to the ASSERT on symbol duplication in basic_serializer_map.cpp. After updating basic_serializer_map.cpp to the version that will eventually go in 1.43, this test fails with the error I described in detail in "[serialization] Potential problems with void_caster". If I change void_cast.cpp to the latest version ( I am afraid that is a post 1.43 version), everything works fine. Setup: ============================================================= I am using a debug build on Visual Studio 2008 Professional with SP1. OS - Windows XP Professional sp 3. The test is run with a version of the boost library built with the following command line bjam -q -a --layout=tagged --build-dir=C:\Downloads\boost_build --prefix=C:\_APP_\boost_1_42_0 --without-python --without-mpi toolset=msvc address-model=32 variant=debug link=static,shared threading=multi runtime-link=shared install In conclusion, if the latest version of void_cast.cpp is not going in boost 1.43, I believe the serialization library will have a problem with this scenario. I am working with the boost 1.40.0 serialization library and I am having trouble with class registration for polymorphic types. The code I have has worked fine with VS2005 and VS2008 for a long time; however, in linux with gcc (4.4.1-4ubuntu9), I am having issues. I am using the non-intrusive serialization method on a class that resides in a shared object file. I have simplified this down to where the serialization of the object is performed in an executable linking in the shared object file. In Windows I am registering the classes with boost using BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID. Or what do I need to return instead of a boost::function to reuse it in phoenix? Basically I want to build more complex functions out of simple ones which are returned by some function to hide the internals of the function. [UTF] Let my debugger catch unhandled exceptions

Hi all, I'm trying to track down a problem in my code that the Boost test framework has isolated, however I'm finding it difficult to track it back to a line in the source. The Boost test framework likes to catch all exceptions, which means when you run the code through a debugger it doesn't break at the point the exception becomes unhandled, so you can't do a backtrace to see where it came from. There is the option --catch_system_errors=no which works for some exceptions, but not these ones. I'm using gdb and telling it to "catch throw" is painful because there are dozens of exceptions thrown around correctly before it gets to the unhandled one I'm interested in. Is there some easy way I can tell UTF not to catch any exceptions? Many thanks, Adam.

Hi, Is there a standard qi paradigm for parsing a value multiple times? Suppose a configuration file has three parameters "a", "b" and "c" each of which take integers. Can semantic actions be avoided (perhaps by use of FUSION_ADAPT_STRUCT)? As far as I can tell, using the "^" operator requires that the members of struct abc be boost::optionals. This grammar does not need optionals because the instance of struct abc that is passed to the parsing function is already initialized with sane defaults. Second, composing grammars of this form does not seem to scale well. For example, suppose the configuration above is extended by one parameter, "d", for a different "composite" configuration file format. [date_time] Decoding ISO 8601 strings with timezones?

Hi all, I'm trying to decode ISO strings into ptime values. But when I initialize what should be two equivalent ptimes, one in UTC and the other with a timezone designation, the resulting ptimes do not compare. It's as if the ISO extended format input facet is ignoring timezone values. I'm using boost 1.42.0. I tried instancing an input facet with "%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S%F%Q" instead of calling set_iso_extended_format, but this didn't work either. Can someone suggest a solution? Also, all the sample code I've seen in this area allocates a time_input_facet but does not delete it. Does the stream take care of deallocating the input facet when it goes out of scope, or will this result in a memory leak? Boost Graph: determining type of bundled property

Hi, I wrote some Boost Graph code that uses a custom pointer type as the vertex: adjacency_list<vecS, vecS, directedS, Foo*, property<edge_index_t, std::size_t> > I now need to expand the graph so that the Foo pointer is just one of several vertex properties. I assume bundled properties are the way to go: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/graph/doc/bundles.html I also need my vertices to be of different types (but all as children of a base type), such that my vertex bundles look something like this: class BaseVertex { }; class EntryVertex : public BaseVertex { }; class ExitVertex : public BaseVertex { }; class FooVertex : public BaseVertex { Foo *foo; // ... other properties follow ... }; My goal is to be able to iterate through the vertices and perform different actions depending on the type of vertex. (e.g., if vertex type is EntryVertex do this, if vertex type is ExitVertex do that, etc.) However, I don't know how to determine a vertex's type. The bundles document mentions something about vertex_bundle_type<Graph>::type, but I have no idea how to use this. I couldn't find any code in the Boost examples that use it, either. Any tips to get me started? Also, note that I've added an index property to my graph's edges, declared explicitly in the adjacency_list instantiation (as seen above). Would it make sense to convert this to a bundled property as well, or should I leave it as-is? (I don't think I'll ever need any edge properties other than the index.) Thanks, Trevor

handling of daylight saving time...

My software records time events on the computer and it does it using whatever timezone and daylight saving time settings are on this computer. I realized too late that, while storing timestamps, I am not accounting for this daylight adjustment process. So, if hypothetically speaking, the daylight adjustment happens today at 9:00 am and I am writing my timestamps every second I will have something like that: … 8.58 8.59 9.00 10.01 (without timesaving should be 9.01) 10.02 (without timesaving should be 9.02) … When I am reading my timestamps back I am constructing timezone and using it for timestamps manipulation std::string gmt = (boost::format("TMZ%1% TMS1:00:00,M3.2.0/02:00:00,M11.1.0/02:00:00") % gmtoffset).str(); , but this one-hour gap persists, as I now think it should. The question is: is it possible to do manipulation with datetime library to remove this gap without hard-coding one hour removal after specific date/time of daylight saving time?

Parallel(or Distributed) Boost Algorithm

I am pretty new to both boost and parallel boost. I am using Brandes Centrality algorithm, but the performance really doesn't meet my expectation. If I used Java, which is only using 1 CPU core would complete it in around 30 hrs. The parallel version which use 8 CPU cores tooks 17 hours!! I don't know why there is just around 13 hours gain if i use 8 cores against 1, unless there are lots and lots of communication between each cores. I am using just 1 machine (not a cluster), right now. Graph size is Node 80K, edges 120K I am reading edges from files. I used distributed compressed_sparse_row to represent graph. Right now, it seems like all the cpu cores are reading files on its own, I am assuming each CPU core will takes its graph part automatically (distributed algorithm do it ?). Note: I downloaded the parallel version from: http://osl.iu.edu/research/pbgl/software/ Any help/suggestions would be really appreciated. Metanil.

[iostreams] How to make a seekable device seek

I have a seekable iostream device with the tag set to : typedef boost::iostreams::input_seekable catagory; If I have not defined the functions get and seek, it will not compile, which is expected, so far so good. But when I called it like this : mydevice test("somefile.txt"); boost::iostreams::stream<mydevice> buf(test); buf.seekg(0); it never enters my seek function, which I would expect. I am sure the solution must be obvious. Any pointers here ?

[units] conversion factor for non-base

I'm unsure how to go about what I need. I've looked at the library code and the documentation and am not even sure what I want is possible, though it should be. In most of our code we use the si system and have defined composite dimensions for most of what is unique to our application. However, there is one dimension where there is no standard unit in the si system: flow coefficient. The flow coefficient is Q/sqrt(dP), a volumetric flow/sqrt(pressure). We have derived and defined a unit that would be the si standard for this quantity if there was one and things work fine. I have a runtime unit system that then converts between user values that make sense, to our internal si version that does not but works. However, now I want to write some alternative functions that use the actual units that engineers really use: Cv and Kv. I would like these alternative functions to then convert into this si unit we've created but the interface should distinguish between Cv, Kv, and my made up unit. The first part is easy: make a system that only contains this funky dimension and then use it to make quantities that are not in the si system. The second part is what I can't find. The conversion templates in conversion.hpp seem to specifically expect base units which at least the si part is not and my conversions should use my funky si unit as their basis. So the question I have is how can I write conversions such that I can do this: quantity<si::flow_coefficient> fc(42 * Kv); and this: void f(quantity<Kv::coefficient>); void f(quantity<Cv::coefficient>); void f(quantity<si::coefficient>); Where Kv and Cv are base units in their own systems. The problem is sort of like degrees and radians, which I was going to use as a basis when I first was looking at this issue, except that in that case the unit is a base unit for a base dimension and in my case I'm working with a derived dimension within the si system. The only way I can think of to do it is to make a system with the components within the derived dimension and make conversion factors for those. I am unable to use pow<> when I define it using the make_expr (as preseneted in docs), but when I define it like proto::terminal< struct pow_fun<2> >::type const pow2 = {{}}; it works. boost::program_options silent name conflicts

Hello all, I've run into a problem with the boost::program_options library and I wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar. When my application defines two program options, pi and pie, the "pie" option silently overrides the "pi" option. Overloading operators with multi index container?

We are using a multi index container to store some data indexed both by a text key and by a timestamp. For the text key index, we are using a non-unique ordering like below: boost::multi_index::ordered_non_unique< boost::multi_index::tag<tags::key>, boost::multi_index::identity<Transaction> > Sometimes we have an issue where we get duplicate keys for transactions that aren't actually duplicates (don't ask). In this case, we can tell them apart by looking at their timestamp and checking if both transactions occurred within a certain window. To do this, we tried to overload operator< in the following way: bool MyTransaction::operator<(const Transaction & rhs) const { const std::time_t WINDOW = 2; if (getHashKey() == rhs.getHashKey()) { if ((epochTime() - WINDOW) <= rhs.epochTime() && (epochTime() + WINDOW) >= rhs.epochTime()) { return false; } else { return (epochTime() < rhs.epochTime()); } } else { return (getHashKey() < rhs.getHashKey()); } } This ought to work, under the assumption that equality is determined by checking that (lhs < rhs) is false and (rhs < lhs) is false. This doesn't seem to be working correctly though. If we add some logging inside the operator overload, we see that it only gets called once, not twice, when we call find() on that keyed index. What is the logic behind find()? I tried to take a look but it's so heavily templated that I couldn't see much more than that it was doing a tree traversal and using a comp() method that's provided as a template argument. Also, I am testing this with just one item in the container. That item has a matching key, but the timestamps are not within the time window I'm using in the operator< overload. I have not checked to see if the behavior is different for a container with many elements. I also tried overloading all the other comparison operators for kicks, and none of them get called ever either. Ideas? issues with BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT

I'm serializing two different classes (fooA, fooB) using boost::any using a wrapper template class combined with a handmade NVP (for the type) under boost_1_42_0. Serializing every type multiple times works fine. However if i use BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT (fooA) to register the type, after the SECOND call that type (fooA) is not being serialized properly anymore. Any subsequent serialization fails. the (text)archive of the correct case: 22 serialization::archive 7 4 fooA 0 0 10 4 fooB 0 0 1.5 4 fooB 2.5 4 fooA 20 the (text)archive of the broken case: 22 serialization::archive 7 4 fooA 1 0 0 10 4 fooB 0 0 1.5 4 fooB 2.5 4 fooA 0 Does that make sense to anybody ? Maybe a bug ? Note also that in the 'broken' case the archive is split into three lines instead of one. Sorry for not posting the example code but it's quite lengthy. If neccesary i'll do so. To put you in a bigger context: i'd like to serialize types using sockets across different architectures (different typeids who'd have guessed). I don't know the order in which the types are sent, so i guess i should register the types upfront using BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT to make sure save and load are in sync on any arch at any time. Hi! Then I added the c:\boost\include\... and c:\boost\lib dir to (Tools -> Options -> VC++ Directories -> Platform x64 Include and Library files) To simplify the problem I created a new project and created a new Configuration for x64 ----- #include "stdafx.h" #define BOOST_LIB_DIAGNOSTIC #include <boost/regex.hpp> #include <string> int main() { boost::regex pat( "bla" ); } ----- I can build above fine in 32 bit mode, using the same(!) lib folder. Hi all I need to make a filtered graph for each color. I have a graph where the edges are assigned a color (there are many colours). I want to make a filtered graph (for each colour) given a colour. I am a little lost with the filtered graph and edge predicates and do not know how to make one with a colour and a colour-edge map. In the examples I have found it is only the map that is needed in the edgepredicate. All, I'd like to use filesystem::path with a custom memory allocator (I need to allocate and free millions of paths in cycles from multiple threads). As far as I understand only the underlying string type can have a custom allocator. Class from plugin serialization fails

Hi, I'm using boost::serialization to store my data from my application. Everything is working nice, but I just can't store my class loaded from plugin. I know there is a lot of discussion here on this topic, I did read a lot of it. I also looked in /examples and /test directories but I still don't fully understand what exactly should I do... So I have abstract class i main application and derived class in plugin. As I understand it, all I have to do to make it work is: 1) #include <boost/archive/text_oarchive.hpp> #include <boost/archive/text_iarchive.hpp> 2) use BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro in plugin_class.cpp but I'm still getting unregistered class exception. Can someone help me please? I know I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure it out. [Test] prevent exceptions from beeing caught

Hi Is there any possibility for boost.test execution_monitor to not to catch exceptions thrown from code that I'm examining in a test case? It's the case with system errors which you can pass from execution monitor outside, to the system for further examination in debugger (--catch_system_errors=n). How am I supposed to do the same with regular exceptions i.e. detect where an exception comes from, if only information I get is something like "unknown location(0): fatal error in testValidate" etc? I would love to have possibility to detect this exception with debugger and print full stack trace, examine variables and so on. Is it possible with boost.test? Regards.

CodeSynthesis XSD is an open-source (GPL2 + proprietary license), cross- platform W3C XML Schema to C++ data binding compiler. Provided with a schema, it generates C++ classes that represent the given vocabulary as well as parsing and serialization code. I noticed that fix for ticket #3919 has been checked-in. Thanks JoelF. I checked out boost trunk, and am trying to compile the following simple program using nvcc. #include <boost/proto/proto.hpp> namespace proto=boost::proto; int main() { return 0; } I was getting "ISO C++ forbids declaration of ‘expr_param’ with no type" error in couple of places in proto/traits.hpp and proto/transform/pass_through.hpp. The code used to look like typename pass_through_impl::expr_param e I added a typedef as follows transform_impl<Expr, State, Data> base_type; and changed the code to typename base_type::expr_param e Now the compiler error goes away. I have 2 questions : 1) Is what I am doing the right fix for the problem, or is the nvcc compiler really broken when handling this? 2) If my fix is OK, how do I make it permanent? The other error I am seeing is probably not proto's problem, but I will mention it here anyway : boost/boost-trunk/boost/mpl/size_t_fwd.hpp:23: error: expected unqualified-id before ‘[’ token boost/boost-trunk/boost/mpl/size_t_fwd.hpp:26: error: ‘mpl_::size_t’ has not been declared boost/boost-trunk/boost/mpl/aux_/integral_wrapper.hpp:42: error: expected unqualified-id before ‘[’ token Any ideas on this? Build errors with boost 1.42.0 under MinGW

I am having problems building boost 1.42.0 using MinGW. The bootstrap.sh script only works if I specify 'mingw' as the toolset. The resulting bjam tool doesn't work though. It doesn't seem to support mingw as a toolset, but I am unable to force it to use something else. I am using WinXP SP3, MinGW GCC 3.4.5. Just running ./bootstrap.sh yields: $ ./bootstrap.sh Building Boost.Jam with toolset gcc... Failed to build Boost.Jam Consult 'bootstrap.log' for more details The log contents are at the bottom of this email. Unfortunately, we can't fund every proposal we received (about 85), and the competition for available funding slots (only 10) is very competitive. We carefully reviewed every proposal based on the merits and feasibility of the work described. If your proposal was not accepted, that does not mean that it was without merit. We encourage all students to continue participating with the Boost community as users and developers, regardless of the results of this program, and look forward to seeing new proposals next year. If you are interested in feedback about your proposal's review and how you can improve the competitiveness of your submissions, feel free to contact me directly. Multi-array non-preserving resize?

I'd like to use a multi_array<double, 2> inside a loop, but the dimensions may be different each time. Now, I could create a new one on each iteration, but I'd prefer to avoid the extra allocations/frees if I can. I also could create it outside the loop and use resize(), but that promises to preserve elements if possible, and that's extra copying I don't need (presumably; I'm assuming here that an underlying 1D memory layout is used, which means that preserving elements after the first row would require moving things around). Is there any simple way to ask a multi_array to resize itself without preserving elements?

I tried something like this: First, the general form in one header known by everything: template <typename T1, typename T2> dim_s foo (const T1& left, const T2& right); Then, in a header that gets more concrete, provide its own form that is meant to be used when objects of those types are involved: template<typename T1, typename T2> typename enable_if_c< is_base_of<genericbase,T1>::value && is_base_of<genericbase,T2>::value, dim_s>::type foo (const T1& left, const T2& right); Here, the template defined in this header derives from genericbase, so I have a hook to say "all types derived from any specialization of this template". Now, this actually causes an ambiguity. The latter is not a specialization but a peer overloading, and when both are present, both are templates that form exact matches and template arguments at the least restrictive way to refer to the type. This function is already internal plumbing, so I don't mind it being a little messy to use. What I'm really doing is multimethod dispatch: various concrete classes, generic versions for making such, and special combinations all have their own efficient logic, with a fallback (slow) that always works. And I want all the plumbing to disappear at compile time so it efficiently calls the efficient function. So if I'm really guilty of the "X for Y" problem, that is what I'm really trying to do, and if there are any suggestions on doing that better in general, please let'em rip. As for the road I'm on now, the simplest thing is to somehow give each form a priority. I did that by adding a 3rd parameter. The general form declares a void*, and the specialized form declares an int. The caller always gives a zero. I'm wondering what is the longest chain of different priorities I can use with this method, using only compiler primitive types that the optimizer should be able to toss when the function is inlined. I know I could use dummy classes with any number of derivations, but I'm thinking I can get several levels just using primitive types. Any suggestions?
