serialization of boost::local_time::tz_database

Now I want to serialize my boost::local_time::tz_database object, but the compiler says, there is now serialize function for this object. [statechart] : choice_point example no worky

I've scoured the web for a reason why and have found no links at all, which is surprising since I suspect the documentation is actually in error. So I tried it...and it failed with a compiler error that I looked into and makes perfect sense. The state<> template expects the third parameter to be a context, which custom_reaction is apparently not. [Asio] io_service destructor never completes

Hi, I'm having trouble with the io_service destructor never completing. The application I am working on uses one worker thread to handle all actual work to be done including communication on a socket in handler functions posted to the asio queue and another thread to handle the gui of the application. At a certain point in time the program decides that it has nothing more to do and calls the io_service::stop function. Shortly thereafter the thread returns from its call to the io_service::run function. The next thing that happens is that the io_service object goes out of scope and thus the io_service destructor is called. After this the thread signals that it is finished and the application exits. The problem I am seeing is that the destructor never finishes. Or actually, a customer sees this problem, but I have not been able to reproduce this so all the information I have comes from adding (excessive) logging in the boost source. The io_service destructor loops through all services and calls shutdown_service on each one. The win_iocp_io_service handles this call by entering a while loop that should complete when the outstanding_work_ variable becomes zero. Inside the loop, there is a call to GetQueuedCompletionStatus to dequeue a completion packet, which is then tested to see if it contains a valid operation that is then destroyed and the outstanding_work_ variable is decremented. In all the runs I have made, outstanding_work_ is initially 1 when the shutdown_service function is entered. The first and second calls to GetQueuedCompletionStatus come back immediately and the second results in the outstanding_work_ variable being decremented and the loop exits. Everything is fine. At the customer location however, the second call times out instead of completing immediately and it continues to do so for subsequent loop iterations until the application is forcibly closed. There is only one of our customers who gets this problem. The customer runs Windows XP SP3, but I have failed to reproduce this on my own XP test machine. We have tried both Boost version 1.43 and version 1.40 with the same result. In both cases, the customer has the problem but I cannot reproduce it. The asio behavior has changed somewhat between the versions and the description of the problem above is with version 1.43. Does anyone have any idea of what may be going on? Any hints or tips are appreciated! Could we be using asio wrong in some way that could cause this, but we're just lucky most of the time? The customer may be running in a virtual machine, could this affect io completion ports in a way that could be problematic for asio? Cheers, Ragnar

[Testing] Help with process child

Hi there, good morning to everyone. I'm using the Boost Test framework to run a set of tests for an application in development and some days ago i faced some problems. In one of my tests, i run what we call "The Processes Test" which in resume is a process launcher. Within the launcher, i run, kill, detach and terminate process and now i am getting lots of ugly and erroneous messages about stack/heap/dead references and unrecognized signals. I wanted to investigate further those errors and on my logs i saw lines like: unknown location(0): fatal error in "testCaseSystemProcess2": child was killed; pid: 20182; uid: 1000; exit value: 9 But indeed i was trying to kill/terminate the children process. Is this ok? If i was really expecting the child process to die, shouldn't boost be quiet about it? Or does it mean the parent process also got killed? Also, on another test case i'm getting: unknown location(0): fatal error in "testCaseSystemProcess1": unrecognized signal Why the signal "id" is not present on the error message? Installation problems on Snow Leopard and EPD 6.2 32 bits

Hello all, I've been trying to install boost on a Mac Pro 8-core running the latest version of Snow Leopard, Xcode and Enthough Python Distribution (EPC 6.2 32 bits). I'm mainly interested in running pyCuda. I have followed the instructions available on: http://wiki.tiker.net/PyCuda/Installation/Mac/EnthoughtPython. Nevertheless, the address-model=32_64 gives an error for the python library and libboostpython doesn't get installed. What is strange is that the instructions seemed to have worked in a setup similar to mine. Has anyone been able to install Boost on a Mac using EPD 32 bits? Am I missing something obvious? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hi, The STL has an implementation of std::map<T1, T2>. It has some designs drawbacks in my opinion. For example, the fact that T2 has to have a default copy constructor. Even if for T2, by design, doesn't make sense to have a copy constructor. The problem boils down to the fact that, in the STL design, if an key element of the map is referenced with the operator[] and it doesn't exist then an 'empty' (default) object T2 is created. In my opinion this feature is independent of the other features of a map. For example if the element doesn't exists and the context is not assignment then it could give an exception. One option would be to use std::map<T1, boost::optional<T2> >. But I am not sure if that creates other problems. It at least creates the problem of having to access elements with the ugly syntax (*m[key]) The question is, does boost have another more complete solution for this problem? (something that I would call optional_map<T1, T2>, uninitializing_map<T1, T2>, elegant_map<T1,T2>) Thank you, Alfredo BTW, This is a simple implementation that I imagine, although in my opinion a clever implementation does not even need to use the indirection of boost::optional, because the context of assigment m[key]=val can be detected with template expressions, and only the copy constructor is needed in this case. boost parameter with template

Hello, I would like to write a class with static methods for calculating different distributions. The algorithmens of the distribution are complet, so now I would like to put them together. Finally I would like to have only one method for using the distribution call, like: template<typename T> static T getDistribution( const distribution&, <arguments> ) I have set distribution to an enum to check the kind of distribution (normal, uniform, bernoulli, ...), so I need for <arguments> a flexible number of arguments of float / double. I've test the cstdargs, but it isn't the right structure, so I have seen the "boost parameter", but I don't understand how to create a function within my class and create a template variable in it. My getDistribution function should have one fix parameter, the first, with a name of the distrivution, and 1 or 2 parameters which are optional with default values for the distribution. Is there a complete example how to use the boost parameter (a full source code)? Thanks Phil

Odd limitation in Fusion design ?

I see that the "Cons" sequence is Forward-only. reverse_view requires a Bidirectional sequence, at least. The for_each iteration function goes forward. However, hand-written recursive loop on a cons-like thing can do stuff before and other stuff after the recursive call to the cdr portion. Putting stuff "after" will give a reversed processing. So, in general, a reversed_for_each is not out of the question, and can be specialized for Cons when the general form of iterating backwards does not work. I also ponder that a more general form that indeed does stuff before AND other stuff after recursing the tail would be a useful addition. [Serialization] Postpone saving

Hi, I'm working with the Serialization library and in detail with the xml archives. In my code I have to serialize a lot of classes and I wish to save in the xml file only when I've done with the serialization of all clasess, also I would like to have more control when the Serialization saves the file (do it raise exceptions when it save files? Which ones?). As far as I read from the tutorials when I use the operator<< in the xml_archive it save directly to the files. In my test I've seen that the archive have no problem to save many classes to the same archive however as I've wrote I would like to have more control (at least to know which errors appear during writing). Is it possible? Thank you for your time.

How to fwd decl boost::variant (with type sequences)?

In a large project (winxp, boost 1.38.0, 10K sources) we are using the boost::variant at some places. The variant types are visible to a large amount of cpp’s. Many of these source-file are not ‘using’ the variant at all, a small amount only ‘passes’ a variant type, and an even smaller amount actually uses it (copy, static-visitor, etc). We have noticed however that the compile-time increases for all sources-files, even when the variant is not used. On a single source-file its maybe split of a second extra but with 10K sources it quickly becomes problem. First attempt to solve this is to fwd declare the variant using provided header variant_fwd.hpp. Example: [v.h] #include <boost/variant/variant_fwd.hpp> class I001{ public: }; class I002{ public: }; class I003{ public: }; typedef boost::variant< boost::shared_ptr<C001>, boost::shared_ptr<C002>, boost::shared_ptr<C003> > v; [a.h] #include “v.h” class CA { public: void foo(const v& ref); }; Source-files now compile faster while only the sources that actually use the variant need to add #include <boost/variant/variant.hpp> to get the definition of the variant class. However it doesn’t really fit our needs because we need the ‘counted’ variant types (using typelists). Reasons for this is simply that some variants are only 3, 5 or 10 elements while another holds 39 element types. We don’t want to extend the length of each type to say 50. Therefore we first compose an mpl::vector (and even compose subsets using joint_view) before defining the variant types. Example of use: #include <boost/mpl/vector.hpp> #include <boost/variant.hpp> typedef boost::mpl::vector< boost::shared_ptr<I001>, boost::shared_ptr<I002>, boost::shared_ptr<I003> > MplV; typedef boost::make_variant_over<MplV>::type v; Now each cpp file must not only include the variant definitions again but also (part of) mpl. I have and expression of type arg1*arg1 which is contained in a deduced type LambdaExp (more preciselly composite<multiplies_eval,vector<argument<0>, argument<0> >) when trying to see what is the phoenix-deduced return type when input is double typename LambdaExp::template result<basic_environment<double> >::type naturally, it gives 'double' (double*double) but when the input type is a boost::units::quantity typename LambdaExp::template result<basic_environment<quantity<si::length> > >::type it gives: error_cant_deduce_type (instread of the equivalent of quantity<si::area>, like in quantity<si::area> a = quantity<si::length>()*quantity<si::length>() ) this is strange since it seemed that Phoenix worked out of the box with Units. What is going on? How can we help Phoenix deduce the return type? Does Phoenix need this help, like Boost.Lambda does by means of boost/ units/lambda.hpp? Thank you, Alfredo

The code in the 1st attachment fails to compile as shown in 2nd attachment. If that's intended, the what's the justification for not allowing appending to an empty sequence? If that's not intended, then should I file a bug report? Based on: <fusion.doc>/html/fusion/algorithm/transformation/functions/push_back.html it seems push_back should work on a 'Forward Sequence' and based on: <fusion.doc>/html/fusion/container/list.html list is a 'Forward Sequence'. That is another good trick to create a global variable which exists in all compilation scopes. Code like this in a header will generate on instance of X shared between compilation scopes. Class X{} inline X& getOneAndOnlyX(){ static X x; return x; } Anyways I'm guessing you could just kick ssl_category. I can't find these constants documented anywhere in the reference. ssl_category isn't used in tests. Some of the others are used, but since they are the same as what the inline functions would return. Perhaps the author was afraid in a multi threaded environment functions like getOneAndOnlyX() aren't safe. I know gcc by default generates atomic ops so only one X is constructed. Perhaps the idea was to ensure all these things were created before main() gets a chance to start threads. I don't have a checkout. Maybe someone could svn blame the file and find out who defined these things and ask them what they were thinking. Chris

Hi, I am new to Boost::Assign. I have a std::map<std::string, unsigned char> and I have a SomeClass with constructor SomeClass(std::string, std::map<std::string, unsigned char>*) and I want to pass the pointer to the result of map_list_of to SomeClass like this: SomeClass *psc = new SomeClass("SomeClassName",map_list_of("one",1)("two",2)("three",3)("four",4)("five",5); In the example at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/libs/assign/doc/index.html#intro , the map_list_of is definitely returning a small map. [asio] creating acceptor on the stack causes seg-fault

boost::serialization trouble

Hi! I am experiencing quite odd errors with the serialization library: My program compiles fine, but crashes when static constants are declared, i.e. before the program even starts with main(). The debugger tells me that some singleton declared in the seralization library conflicts: Program received signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS, Could not access memory. Reason: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at address: 0x0000000000000000 0x0000000100003aaf in H5::DataType::DataType () at singleton.hpp:149 149 BOOST_DLLEXPORT T & singleton<T>::instance = singleton<T>::get_instance(); Any suggestions would be great here. What makes it even harder to understand is the fact that the exact same code runs perferctly on a Linux machine, whereas the crash is on MacOS 10.6. My setup here is a boost 1.43.0 compiled with gcc 4.5 from pacports (or apples gcc 4.2, no difference). It seems that the singleton does things which are not allowed on a 10.6 MacOS machine... Default weight map doesn't work for weighted grid graph in A-star search

I am trying to write a simple example of an a-star search over a 2-dimensional grid using the Boost Graph Library. The source is hosted here: http://github.com/wpm/Boost-Searchable-Grid-Example. My intent is for this to be a resource for other people writing a-star searches. I am seeing an error about a missing weight map when I try to compile the call to astar_search(). As far as I can tell, everything is in order. I hoping someone has insight into what I'm missing. My graph class is a rank-2 grid graph called weighted_grid defined like so: typedef grid_graph<2> weighted_grid; I have a simple map that returns a weight of zero for every edge. struct edge_weight_map { typedef float value_type; typedef float reference; typedef edge_descriptor key_type; typedef readable_property_map_tag category; reference operator[](key_type e) const { // All edges have a weight of zero. return 0; } }; I associate this map with the weighted_grid class by specializing property_map. template<> struct property_map<weighted_grid, edge_weight_t> { typedef edge_weight_map type; typedef edge_weight_map const_type; }; I've defined valid expression functions for this property map along with a Euclidean distance heuristic and a visitor that throws an exception when a goal vertex is reached. The complete source is viewable at the URL given above. With these definitions I can do concept checks on the ReadablePropertyMap, ReadablePropertyGraph, VertexListGraph, and AStarHeuristic concepts. I can instantiate a weighted_grid. I can get the edge weight map using get(edge_weight, g) and the vertex index map using get(vertex_index, g). I think I have written everything I need to do a-star search. However, the following call does not build: vertex_descriptor source = vertex(0, g), goal = vertex(3, g); astar_search(g, source, euclidean_heuristic(goal), visitor(astar_goal_visitor(goal)) ); I get a long error spew. serialization using archive

Hi I have come across the example for serialization in http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/serializat… In the following method async_write, the data typename T is put into an archive before being sent out. I would need to do the same thing here but the archive should be binary stream because I need to send this data to a third party application which expects a binary stream. Does anyone know how to do it? I'd like to do something like: boost::uint16_t b(std::lexical_cast<boost::uint16_t>("xa")); I have no control of the string stream that lexical_cast uses internally, so how could I implement this? P.S.: There are a lot of false statements made about this functionality on the web, some people claim that boost::lexical_cast<> can do the conversion out of the box, but this is not so in my tests.

nested bind() does not compile

Hello I'm wondering why the attached code which is using nested boost::bind() does not compile on GCC ( I have tried 4.1 and 4.3). According to the "bind" package documentation nested bind() calls are allowed. To make it compile (and work!) it's necessary to add explicit cast to the result of the nested bind() call, like: boost::function<void ( void )> f = boost::bind( wrapper, a, (boost::function<bool (void)>)boost::bind( cb, p ), b ); But that is something which I don't like. Any ideas? Storing boost as a 'vendor library' within svn and minimising it's size

Hi We wish to use boost.python in our project that runs on both Windows and Linux platforms. I think that the best way of making boost available to the developers, particularly under Windows, will be as a 'vendor library' within our project's subversion repository. That way, we can control the version of boost in use and make available pre-built binaries. My problem is that I want to minimise the size of that vendor library in order to minimise the time of checkouts and updates within Subversion. This is important as we have developers on the other side of the world, connected via low bandwidth links. First of all, I would welcome any experience or suggestion of how best to share boost, using a vendor library or whatever. Secondly, I have built just the boost.python shared libraries (v.1_43) and then executed 'boost install' to create a directory of just the header files and binaries. This will become the vendor library. Is this a sensible approach? Thirdly, the install directory is 48MB, which is large compared to the other directories in the svn project. I am considering deleting the header file directories not used by boost.python. But this is a trial and error process, as boost.python uses lots of boost header files. Any ideas on how best to do this? I will be very grateful for any advice. With best regards David

Boost.Ranges 2.0 algorithms accepting a const reference

Hi, the Boost.Ranges (v 1.43) documentation suggests that for each algorithm there is a version accepting a reference to a range and a version accepting a const reference to a range (which in my case would be useful for the "non-const reference to temporary object problem" when dealing for example with a boost::iterator_range<std::vector<double>::iterator> range). However the code (take for instance the reverse algorithm) does not seems to include the const reference version. Am I missing something, is the documentation incorrect, or it has been decided against the const reference version? Thank you in advance for your help. Stefano

Are these variables really needed? They theoretically create a word per compilation scope. A cleaner alternative would be to just call the function where needed. If you really need to define global variables in a header only library, you can define static members of a template class. It's a fancy trick (not sure if it has a name). Hi, I want to define a range for gsl_vector's. I have tried many versions according to the manual but none is working. Maybe someone here could help me. boost C++ load data from file

Dear All, I need to load data (24 X 28 X 40) from 24 X 28 files into a datastructure so that my program can usethem to do operations. Each file has 40 data items, which are floating numbers. I hope that the data structure can be indexed by item name not only by integer. For example, for 24 states in USA, each state's power consumption is POWC in year Y. I hope that the data structure indexing is like this datastructure[newYork][year][powerconsumption] My question is : (1) how to load the data from 24 x 28 files by boost C++? It is boring to type file's name one by one in program. Is there an alternative to load the data by indexing the file names ? for example, for (filename = name1; filename < filenum ; filename++){ load data from filename; store loaded data in the datastructure.} (2) how to index the item of the datastructure by boost C++ ? boost::interprocess, allocators and containers of containers

I'm attempting to create a buffered queue backed by a memory mapped file. The main data structure is a boost::interprocess::list of boost::interprocess::shared_ptr< Buffer<T> >. Buffer<T> is a struct that has two members: an interprocess_upgradable_mutex and a interprocess::deque. When I attempt to push an item into the deque contained by the struct I get a SIGSEGV in rbtree_best_fit::priv_mark_as_free_block() at line 1153 when using boost 1.43. I'm passing the allocator to the constructor of the deque as instructed in the documentation and I'm using all types which should be boost::interprocess safe. I've spent a couple hours on this one item and I'm not making any progress; I was wondering if someone could please lend me a hand. I followed the UBLAS extensions here: http://www.crystalclearsoftware.com/cgi-bin/boost_wiki/wiki.pl?Examples_-_H… and I figured out how to extend functions like "exp" and "log" to act on a vector. But, those are functions of one argument. What I want is to be able to apply a function with one fixed argument, like std::pow, to a vector for some exponent exp, so I would like the code to look like: vector<double> v( 100 ); double exponent = 2.1; // some exponent value // ... fill v ... std::cout << apply_to_all( v, functor::my_pow<double>(exponent) ) << std::endl; std::cout << apply_to_all<functor::my_pow<double>(exponent) >( v ) << std::endl; OR std::cout << apply_to_all( v, functor::my_pow<double>() , exponent) << std::endl; How can I do this? I tried overloading apply_to_all and writing constructor code, but it didn't work because the return type of the apply function is static. P.S. Memory management of boost::mutex

Hi, we have a custom memory manager that overrides global new/delete. It is currently not thread safe. Because we require thread safety now I wanted to ad a mutex and some locks around the critical parts. Unfortunately boost::mutex allocates memory itself. So while the memory manager is created it tries to create it's mutex which causes global new to be called which calls the memory manager which is not created yet. I solved this for several data structures inside the memory manager by using custom allocators and by overriding the memory managers new operator to directly call malloc and free for its needs. But I don't see a way to customize memory management in boost mutex. Can it be achieved somehow? Boost 1.42.0: DateTime ISO Timestamp Parsing Fix

Boost.DateTime 1.42.0 falsely converts "20100713" into "20100713T201007.300000" using from_iso_string(). Example Code: const boost::posix_time::ptime time=boost::posix_time::from_iso_string("20100713"); std::cout << boost::posix_time::to_iso_string(time) << std::endl; Current Result: 20100713T201007.300000 The error is caused by boost::date_time::split(). The attached patch corrects split() so that an exception is thrown later in parse_delimited_time_duration(). We assume this behaviour to be better than creating a ptime that contains wrong values. Hi, Why is it that ptr_vector's documentation has everything EXCEPT the header that I need to include? http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_43_0/libs/ptr_container/doc/ptr_vector.html no mention of what headers are required... very frustrating, so either I have to look through all the other documentation and hope I find it, or look for the file on the harddisk, or trial-by-error... this problem seems to be common in boost documentation, is there a good reason why, or is this something that can be improved? thanks Paul

Hello, I am doing a research about Monte Carlo Tree Search efficiency on KBNK chess ending. I use framework and algorithm implementation in C++. Since I had some memory leaks, that I couldn't manage to identify, I decided to try Boost's shared_ptr. I reorganized the whole thing to use it, but I encountered a problem, which I cannot solve. The problem occurs, when I try to call class member function, which was declared "virtual" in super class. If I try to call functions, that are not redefined, everything works as expected. Ex.: class Base{ public: int val = 0; virtual void fun(){ /* do something */} }; class Derived : public Base{ public: void fun(){ /*redefined*/} void fun1(){ /*not redefined*/} }; /* ... */ boost::shared_ptr<Base> object(new Derived); object->val = 1; //this works ok object->fun1(); //also works ok object->fun(); //does not work, I get segfault and "<symbol is not available>" error in stack trace I get the same problem if I use boost::shared_ptr<Derived> instead of boost::shared_ptr<Base>. If I change fun() in Base class to non-virtual thing works (then I cannot use polymorphism of course). I use Boost 1.4 on Ubuntu 10.04. Hope someone could help me. Is there any Template [Meta] Programming Technique available to achieve this?

Hi, I am working on a UI system. I have created a prototype factory using the regular pattern. The abstract "product" class (each product class takes only the "name" of the product as the parameter) which is the parent of all the product classes that the proto-factory creates, contains a lonnnnnng enumeration - each product class uses some of the enumerators contained inside the enumeration. Having developed the factory, I have realized that there are various other "thing" that I can "manufacture" using the same approach. So, I want to re-use the proto-factory. For that I need to templatize the product classes and the factory class and need to "manufacture" the proto-factory itself from a proto-factory generator class (another factory, that is). The problem is, the different enumerators/constants required by each product class don't allow me genericize the design. For example, I have an Align class which uses the following enumeration: enum text_align_type { text_align_not_set = -1, text_align_left = align_left_key, text_align_center = align_center_key, text_align_right = align_right_key, text_align_justified = align_just_key }; Now the Align class takes the string "Align" as its constructor parameter and sets one of its values to text_align_not_set using the initialization list. It makes use of all of the above enumeration constants in its validation and so on. Since the proto-factory is creating the products by cloning using the copy constructors of the registered objects, I think a solution would be to pass all these enumeration constants in the constructor of each product class (besides the productName argument which is already being passed to each product class constructor). This way, I will need to create/registered these products only once in the proto-factory registry and subsequent products will then be generated/manufactured (i.e. copy-constructed) from the registered products. PROBLEM ======== Passing enumeration constants in constructors for the sole purpose of validation, etc. seems to be a bit inefficient to me. Yet I also want to re-use the design. I wonder if I could use Boost and its template/meta-programming magic to somehow pass these enumeration constants to each product class without having to pass them in product class constructors. I am trying to translate this runtime loop while( totalsize * maxelem * 3 > poolsize ) maxelem >>= 1; into MPL. bjam cross compile linking with wrong libs

Hi, I'm trying to cross compile a simple program using libtorrent but falling foul of some settings in the boost build system. I am totally green at using boost so please excuse me if the answer is obvious. The problem is that the link line emitted by the boost build system appears to include a hard coded reference to a NATIVE lib (/usr/lib/ libdl.so) and not the one for the TARGET build system. Hi, I am asynchromously reading from a file. At the file read handler there is an error checking like this- if(error==boost::asio::error::eof) { //do something } else { cout<<error.messge()<<endl; } When the end of file reaches, the control does not enter into the "if portion", instead it enters the else condition and prints the message "Reached the end of the file". Am I comparing error wrongly? or else where could be the problem? How can I know that the end of file has reached? asio::async_write, how to delete data after

Hi, I modified a little the echo server example and to build up a simple tcp server; basically what I do is: - Start the server in a thread - When a session is created I start async read - If my session receive a signal I write a data with async write function - Handle data written then start again async read ( otherwise the connection should be closed ) I have some specific functions which prepare packets and then invoke the write method I would like to avoid static allocation of my buffer instead of dynamic one; for doing that I supposed to use shared_array<T> I can't do that because the boost::asio::buffer, required by the write method, doesn't seem to accept smart pointer. So my questions are: - Is there a common pattern to follow for preparing data and delete them after the delivery ? - Is it possible to use smart pointers with async_write ? - Is the async_write executed in another thread ? should I have concurrency problems if I would use an unique output buffer and clear it on the handle_write callback ? [bjam] boost mpi compiler wrapper

In my system (cluster) there is a mpiCC wrapper for mpi c++ compilation. Unfortunately it is not compatible with bjam detection. so I added the lines: using mpi : mpiCC : <...>... ; to project-config.jam however when trying to compile boost.mpi it still uses g++ so the correct mpi.h file is not detected. I found that if I modifying unsing gcc : : mpiCC : <...> ... ; does the job. So, should I compile the whole boost with mpi compiler wrapper? It doesn't seem elegant and I fear problems in the future for libraries that don't use mpi. Thank you, Alfredo

Hello, The manual for Boost.MPI 1.43.0 states: "More optimizations are possible on homogeneous machines, by avoiding MPI_Pack/MPI_Unpack calls but using direct bitwise copy. This feature can be enabled by defining the macro BOOST_MPI_HOMOGENEOUS when building Boost.MPI and when building the application." What is the correct way of building Boost.MPI for homogeneous systems? Should I just uncomment the relevant line in boost/mpi/config.hpp, or is there another (and recommended) way through Jam files? Hi, I am trying to build a boost::python library that uses serialization using BJAM. Unfortunately I cannot get the Jamfile to accept any commands to link the static library libboost_serialization.a into my .so file. I can build simple boost::python libraries but now I need to call functions/classes in this library from my python wrapped classes. My basic jamfile looks like this: project-root ; import python ; extension MyLib : MyClass.cpp <template>@boost/libs/python/build/extension : ; I am running CentOs version 5, boost_1_33_1 (unfortunately I cannot upgrade to a later version) bjam, (built from boost-jam-3.1.18) Currently when I run bjam the environment variable $BOOST_BUILD_PATH is not set, because of this I believe that bjam is building as "v1". If I set $ BOOST_BUILD_PATH to ~/boost_1_33_1/tools/build/v2 I can no longer build even simple examples and I am presented with the errors: error: Could not find parent for project at '.' error: Did not find Jamfile or project-root.jam in any parent directory. If I could get bjam to work with "v2" I believe that I could get syntax correct for adding the library to Jamfile. The directory ~/boost_1_33_1/tools/build/v2 contains: site-config.jam which is empty user-config.jam which has the following lines uncommented: import toolset : using ; using gcc ; using python ; Ultimately I would like to be able to build boost python code with make instead of bjam - has anyone managed this, if so is there an example makefile anywhere? Testing that a particular operator is not alllowed

Is there any way to test at compile time, using a Boost construct, that a particular operator is not allowable for a given type, other than simply compile the code and have the compiler generate an error message when trying to use an operator on an object of that type ? I am writing some tests for an MPL library on which I am working where I want to make sure that a given operator for my template class instantiation object will fail to compile, but I would like to do this in such a way that I can generate a compile time message for the failure rather than an actual compiler error. I suspect this is not possible but I thought I would ask anyway.

I'm using Fusion to create a list of Range objects. "; } I expect it to print Yip! n times and then Yap! n times. What I get is a compiler error concerning the boost::begin(r) or boost::end(r), that I'm calling it on a fusion::void_ rather than a Range. As you see, I have moved the end-of-recusion test from its normal position at the top of the function (test when called, and return immediately rather than doing the normal body) to the point of the recursive call (don't call with the end sentinel). However, this appears to still trigger the function expansion, since the trail of errors seems to go from the point marked 23 as the original (inner-most) error, to several stops at point 25, to the caller, and so on back out. So it expands several times and then errors, so I think it is objecting to the "end" case. Now if simply mentioning the function, not calling it, is enough to make it expand the function, then more levels of indirection isn't going to help. What is the proper way to do this? Is there, somewhere, a proper example of using Fusion to iterate from begin to end of a Fusion collection? Presumably this must be done using recursion because the type of "next(I)" is not necessarily the same as the type of "I". If some other kind of overloading or partial specialization is the trick, I would expect that the "end" type, or the dereference of the "end" type, would be documented as something I could easily use for that. Please help. The only way is to try writing something to the user (a sort of application defined ping), beacause this should trigger a tcp error at one moment if the connection was closed. Needless to say, that the tcp client should do the same to detect properly closed connections. You can even add a timeout in both sides to monitor user or server activity (incoming and outgoing data), and close the connection if the timeout is reached....

Hi, Please, can anybody tell me how to compile Boost (e.g. 1.43) with the -fPIC as cxxflag: typicially I do ./bootstrap --prefix=$HOME/usr ./bjam ./bjam install There are some threads that give answers but in none of them it is clear exactly what is the command we need to write. I tried with CFLAGS=-fPIC ./bjam ./bjam cxxflags=-fPIC and still the result seems not to use -fPIC Thank you, Alfredo

Hi all, I'm not sure where to post this since boost.process is a candidate and not officially accepted to boost proper. If this should go elsewhere, please let me know. We're seeing hangs when running child command line executables under Mac OS X (posix) while capturing stdout. It seems to happen more often when the command line child app is verbose and spitting out a lot of output. To test this, I created a simple test app that outputs some number of random guids to cout. I then launched this child app from another test app using boost process, indicating that we're capturing stdout. If I run the test with just a few guids outputted (like 100), it works fine. But if I tell the test app to output 1000 guids, the child app hangs every time, attempting to flush the output stream: #0 0x96378249 in write$NOCANCEL$UNIX2003 () #1 0x963781ad in _swrite () #2 0x96376fdd in __sflush () #3 0x96376f79 in fflush () #4 0x91b1ecb2 in std::ostream::flush () #5 0x00005ae6 in main (argc=4, argv=0xbffff608) If I launch the child app manually with the same parameters (i.e. 1000 iterations), rather than programmatically via boost process, it works fine. The code I'm using to configure the environment of the test app is the following: --snip-- // context - Inherit our env and file descriptors bp::context ctx; ctx.environment = bp::self::get_environment(); ctx.stderr_behavior = bp::redirect_stream_to_stdout(); ctx.stdout_behavior = bp::capture_stream(); --snip-- But I've seen the same problem with other configurations, including when both stderr and stdout are being captured to their own streams, and when stdout is being inherited from the parent process. Looks like we're using boost.process 0.31, with some mods and fixes we implemented but have not yet given back (no changes to stdout or stderr capturing, though). We're building with Xcode 3.2.2 and gcc 4.0. We're running under Mac OS X 10.6.4. Any ideas as to what's wrong and how to fix or work around it? Best, -- Allen Cronce

[program options] Is it possible to add new options during parsing?

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible (and if so, what is the best way) to add new options to a parser during parsing, that is, during the call to run(). The use case scenario is that I have an option called 'type' and if the type specified at runtime equals 'string1' I want to allow and parse a set of extra options (which -of course- can only be specified after type), and if it equals 'string2' then I want to allow and parse a different set of extra options. To do this I am thinking of using a command_line_parser and invoking extra_parser() with a function that will invoke method options() on the command_line_parser object as appropriate. I am wondering if adding options during parsing is going to break something or if there is a cleaner way to achieve this. One of the reasons why I don't like this solution so much is the need to pass somehow the parser object to the funcion that does the extra parsing, although I think I can use bind for that. Hello, I have need for a heterogeneous tree container that holds different types (all of them primitive, int, double...) except for the leaf nodes which would hold a POD. The depth of the tree is N, known at runtime, and constant through all the paths, the actual types of each node are only known at runtime as well. Each level holds the same type. The number of children at 1 level, is variable from 1 parent to the next. root (no data here) | | | type1 type1 type1 | | type2 type2 ... typeN typeN .... typeN There are no paths from root to leaf with a depth different from N. typeN is a struct containing only primitive types, known a compile-time, and instances of it are the result of calling a complex function with arguments of type1.... type_N-1. Note that I will generate the [1, N-1] part of the tree sequentially, but then call the complex function in parallel. I have looked at the ntree.hh but it seems to be a homogenous container. Any reusable container out there for this purpose, or is ntree reusable somehow? Regards,

Serialization XML on windows and linux

Hi, I've been using the boost serialization for quite a few projects and it works realy well in many different situations. But today I'm facing a problem, I find very difficult to solve. I serialize objects in a XML archive for a project working on linux and windows using boost 1.38. And oddly my files are not compatible between the two plateforms. When I try to deserialize an object saved on a different plateform, the application crashes despite the fact that I catch possible exceptions. Recursive variant problem

It looks like the boost::recursive_variant_ type is not substituted with the type of the enclosing variant by the make_recursive_variant meta-function. Am I missing something ? Is this is bug ? [Serialization] Problem with compiling (something about assertion)

Hi, I'm new to this list. I tried to search something related to my problem but I found nothing (or at least, nothing I guess it's related to my problem) and, sincerly, I don't really know what to search for. I excuse if I made an already solved request. Anyway I have this problem: I'm trying to compile the demo_xml.cpp from the Serialization tutorial. I compiled the libraries with bjam, I use gcc 3.4.5 on MinGW 5.1.6 (windows 7). I use Eclipse 3.5 as IDE. Newbie: Building boost with Visual Studio 2008

Hi I have a question about building boost 1.43 with Visual Studio 2008. I have performed the following steps: 1) Downloaded and extracted boost_1_43_0.zip to C:\boost_1_43_0. 2) Built bjam (using tools\jam\src\build.bat). 3) Ran bjam in C:\boost_1_43_0 bjam ran successfully but the resulting tree contains .obj files but not all .lib files (for example, the RegEx libs are missing). I then ran: bjam.exe install This created folder c:\Boost, which does contain all the libraries and successfully links with the RegEx example program in 'boost: Getting Started on Windows'. That article ('boost: Getting Started on Windows') does not specify that I should run bjam install. Why was 'install' necessary in my case? Now I do not know whether to use C:\boost_1_43_0, which contains the headers and documentation, or C:\Boost, which contains the headers and libraries, as boost root. Obviously, if I choose the former, I need to fix it's build process. I want a solution that I can recommend to our development team. Please can someone advise me what is best practice? Hello I am constructing a data structure with STL containers and tuples and containers ..., so all inner memebers/components are unnamed (tuples use only indexes for element access, and so do STL containers, if at all) At a certain point my structure is recursive as it needs to hold a tree of (variables and maps and lists of (variables and maps and lists of (...))) boost::make_recursive_variant< >::type can serve my purpose well, except that I do not need a variant in my structure, I just need the structure to be recursive. Is there a way to get the recursive-definition behavior of make_recursive_variant<>, without the variant ? Also I am curios: how is such a recursive definition possible ? Musings: how to best implement this? (N ranges)

Recall an earlier discussion of storing N ranges in a collection. Boost.Assign looks good, but is inefficient. I'm thinking of doing the same thing using some compile-time metaprogramming. I think Fusion offers the tools I need, to have part metaprogram and part runtime. Suppose my syntax is is: vector<whatever> vec= cat(R1)(R2)(begin1,end1)(R4); for any number of parameters where each application of operator() can contain a Range-concept-supporting object or two parameters that are a pair of iterators. The function call cat(R1) kicks it off, and each subsequent operator() adds to the Fusion sequence of ranges. I'm fighting back confusion as to the meta/regular boundary, so any help is appreciated at this point. So, the meta-ness is that the result of the chain is a single object without the runtime baggage needed to handle the heterogeneous nature -- that's the advantage, right? But then the run-time side needs to actually accumulate the values, which should be streamlined via the optimizer. I need not just a list of types (MPL), but types holding values or references to values. So operator() "does" a run-time push_back and the return type is a metaprogram. I'm not sure what I'm doing yet, but that's what I'm trying to get. Finally, the conversion operator can see the whole thing and accumulate the sizes of the component ranges, pre-allocate the vector, and then iterate the Fusion sequence to process each range in the normal way. One sticking point in my mind is how to handle Ranges that are whole STL collections. In that case, I want to hold them by reference. But other kinds of ranges... will references work with Fusion collections? Will doing everything by reference optimize out OK, or do I need to use values to acheive that? Does Range have some metaprogramming property for "best way to pass this kind of range"? More advanced, down the road: For now, I can assume that all ranges are random-access and can handle the size generic function. Slightly better is to separate the code paths so random-access ranges are sized and other ranges are not, giving 0; then the pre-allocation will still help some, or be business as usual with no pre-allocation. But more advanced would be to pre-allocate the total size (of the remaining portion of the list) as far as it is known, after concatenating a range that didn't have an efficient size function. So, given a mixed list, it will reduce the amount of re-copying that is done. Not sure of the algorithm; point is, "do something" before or after a non-random-access range is processed. So, I want to make sure I don't paint myself into a corner, even if I don't add this functionality initially. Any suggestions (or code scraps!) are welcome. Best way to put N ranges into a new container?

I was originally contemplating writing something that took some number of Range arguments and push_back'ed onto a container. Where all of them are Random Access Ranges, it can count the elements first and reserve once. Otherwise, it just concats one range at a time. Maybe could be a bit smarter, but you get the idea. But reading through the Range docs, I'm wondering now if a better approach would be a Range Adaptor that could make a concatenated "view" (to use MPL's terminology) of all of the components put together. Does something like that already exist? [Serialization] How do I serialize derived classes via a template class of type base class?

I am having a problem where I am trying to serialize a message of a template class. The template's class message is of type BaseClass, but I want it to serialize the derived versions of the class. As of right now, it is only serializing the BaseClass. How am I supposed to register with boost::serialization the types of the derived classes that I want it to serialize? I have tried several methods such as using the 'BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT' macro. I have also tried boost::serialization::void_cast_register(). Also, I have tried using this example: ar.register_type(static_cast<bus_stop_corner *>(NULL)); from here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/serialization/example/demo_gps.hpp but still no luck. It seems to me that all of the things I have posted above are different ways to achieve the same end result: serialize a derived class via a base class pointer. But I am not clear on when to use which one, and which method is appropriate for my case. Here is an example of what my code is like: template <class T> class Frame{ ... private: T message; }; class BaseType{}; class SubTypeA : public BaseType{}; class SubTypeB : public BaseType{}; int main(){ std::vector< Frame<BaseType> > myFrames; //add a bunch of Frame<SubTypeA> and Frame<SubTypeB> objects to the myFrames vector. //serialize the vector. return 0; } This code is not compilable at all, but was included to give you an idea of the structure of my program. Boost MPI, error to get message

Dear All : I designed a master-worker framework with boost MPI, in which the master can schedulemultiple tasks (numTaskPerWorkerNode) to each worker and then collects results from workers. if the numTaskPerWorkerNode = 1, it works well. But, if numTaskPerWorkerNode > 1, the master cannot get the results from workers. But, the workers can get the tasks from master. why ? I have used different taskTag to distinguish the tasks, but still does not work. Any help is appreciated. [Bind] Placeholders passed by reference?

This works exactly as expected... void f( unsigned & val ) { val *= 2; } unsigned i = 3; boost::bind( f, _1)( i ); with i being doubled. What I don't get is why I don't need to say boost::bind( f, boost::ref( _1 ) )( i ); and conversely how I specify that I want bind to pass by value rather than by reference for the placeholder. Hi, I need for initialisation the random values on a cluster (64 cores on 8 machines) different seeds. I would like to use the time and thread id: I can't use only the time, because I will get the same random numbers on every core, so I would like to use thread id and time together. I dont' work with boost threads, so I try to read the thread id with boost::thread::get_id(). Compiling works, but on linking I get the error "that boost threads can't linking", but I don't have any library like "boost thread" ? Should I compile the library like the iostream lib? Is this the right way to read the thread id? I need only a value which I can use for the random seed of all cores and the value must be different on every core. Thanks for help Phil

asio, new connection handler is not called

Hi, In our application, inside the "main()" a tcp port made to listen, and the io_service is ran. It receives connection, and reads data from the connection. Then it create a thread and passes the "io_service" and the related "socket" as a reference to the new thread. Further communication are performed inside the thread. So far this works fine. Now inside the thread, I have created a "thread interruption point". This thread interruption point is inside a while loop for testing, and the while loop is inside the "async_read_handler". (That is the read handler never returns - When testing code is execution control is here-). By opening a new "telnet client", I have tried to connect to the listening port, it is connected, but the async_accept handler routine is not called! What could be the reason? How can I rectify this? Hi Boosters, I'm sure I'm not the first person to be caught out by this. If you try to use Boost.Functional/Hash on a smart pointer type such as boost::shared_ptr, the results may be, well, underwhelming: typedef boost::shared_ptr<int> IPtr; IPtr i1 = IPtr(new int(1234)); IPtr i2 = IPtr(new int(4321)); std::cout << std::hex << "hash(i1): " << boost::hash<IPtr>()(i1) << "\n" << "hash(i2): " << boost::hash<IPtr>()(i2) << "\n"; which produces: hash(i1): 1 hash(i2): 1 This is because the shared_ptr is being silently converted to a boolean type before being hashed. Now maybe this is all documented and so forth but I would argue that it's not really expected behaviour. Or to put it another way, it's very easy to go wrong and use smart pointers in a hashed container such as a boost::unordered_set. The performance of such a set obviously degrades considerably, when compared to a more intelligent hash function. Here's a simple snippet to show the problem: typedef boost::shared_ptr<int> IPtr; template <typename T> struct PtrHash : public std::unary_function<boost::shared_ptr<T>, std::size_t> { std::size_t operator() (boost::shared_ptr<T> const& ptr) const { return boost::hash<T*>()(ptr.get()); } }; template <typename Set> double TimeInserts(int i) { Set s; boost::timer t; while (i--) s.insert(IPtr(new int(i))); return t.elapsed(); } int main() { typedef boost::unordered_set<IPtr> IPtrSetDefaultHash; typedef boost::unordered_set<IPtr, PtrHash<int> > IPtrSetPtrHash; const int iterations = 10000; std::cout << std::dec << "IPtrSetDefaultHash: " << TimeInserts<IPtrSetDefaultHash>(iterations) << "s\n" << "IPtrSetPtrHash: " << TimeInserts<IPtrSetPtrHash>(iterations) << "s\n"; return 0; } Which outputs: IPtrSetDefaultHash: 2.14526s IPtrSetPtrHash: 0.006855s ... a noticable performance difference. OK so obviously it is reasonable to want to question the wisdom of using a smart pointer type in a hashed container like this. But I want to ignore that question for now, and instead ask whether it is possible to *prevent* the conversion of smart pointers to bool for the purposes of calculating hash values. The context for this question is a fairly large codebase with extensive use of hashed containers. Not everyone on the development team is aware of this particular limitation of smart pointers. So not only do I want to detect the use of "dangerous" hashing functions but also prevent them being used in the future. Instead I really want to either fix or prevent the conversion to bool for smart pointers when used in a hashing function (either through the boost:: or tr1:: namespace). One idea is to patch the boost headers to add a hash function for each of the smart pointer types (as per the example above) but there must be a better answer than this? Does this problem affect anyone else? How do people deal with this?

Hi list, I found a C++03 emulation of unique_ptr here http://home.roadrunner.com/~hinnant/unique_ptr.hpp Is there any reason this is not part of Boost? Are there any known issues with this code? Thanks!

boost serialisation number of global symbols per serializable type

How can I work out the number of global symbols introduced per serializable type ? Is this fixed or does it vary according to type of serialisation , i.e by ptr, versus by value ? On linux I tried: nm test | grep GLOBAL | grep RepeatDay | wc Which revealed about 26, however this does not seem right ? Is there any way to reduce this overhead? Any help appreciated. I did not look too much into details, but it seems to be related to memory-mapped files. Compiler error when using property map get()

Hi, The get() function for property maps has me puzzled. Calling it in one context gives a compiler error, while in another context it does not. A trivial example is below. Note that the code in foo() and main() are identical. Any guesses as to why the foo() version gives a compiler error while the main() version does not?
