[serialization] Deserialize by pointer without calling new/constructor

I'm working on integrating Boost serialization into an OMNeT++ simulation as a means of saving a partial simulation state (to speed up statistical testing). The problem I am running into is related to the process of deserializing a derived-class object by a base-class pointer without tracking. As far as I can tell, in this case the serialization library normally: 1. Determines the most-derived type 2. Allocates memory for that type of object 3. Updates the pointer to point the the above allocated memory block 4. Invokes placement new and the default constructor (overloadable by load_construct_data) 5. Calls the class' serialize() or load() method on the newly-constructed object However, I have a case where I start out with an existing derived-class object that is partially initialized, and I just want to call the serialize() or load() method for it using a base-class pointer (i.e., no memory allocation since that's already done, and no constructor call since that's also already done.) Is this possible or am I trying to do something the serialization library is not meant for? Thanks, Adam Verigin

The problem occurs at runtime. I 've figured out that the problem is due to the nested data structure. I have kind of a graph, where every node stores a pointer to the neighboring node. This means, once I start to serialize the first node, all the neighboring nodes have to be serialized as well, which finally ends up with at many recursive function calls as I have nodes. This is probably similar to a linked list, where once the first entry is serialized, a pointer to the next element is serialized and so on, which finally ends up with as many recursive function calls as there are element in the list. Is there a clever way to restructure the serialization (e.g. first serializing all the nodes, and in a second step, when the nodes have been created, serialize there connectivity without introducing two separate serialize routines?) The stack depth should be proportional to the depth of your class data. It should be easy to check this. Setup your debugger to trap on stack overflow. When it does, show a back trace. You should be able to easily determine the source of the stack usage. I could be some deeply recursive structure, a coding error or who knows. Do this analysis is much more time efficient than me trying to guess what the problem might be. > 2. Compiling / Linking Boost::RegEx for x64 targets fails

Hi, I used the boost library installer from boostpro to install the 32 bit version on my system. All projects compile and link fine for the 32 bit target in Visual Studio 2005. But when I switch to the x64 platform target, I get linker errors. So I decided to compile boost myself, with the following command: bjam.exe --build-dir=e:\boost-build --build-type=complete --toolset=msvc --address-model=64 and installed the result in a separate lib_x64 folder in the boost installation from boostpro. All projects with the x64 target add this path to the linker settings. The libs are found, but when I compile the project, I get the following linker errors: http://pastebin.com/saQMtFwX All problems seem to be related to the regex library. I then created a complete new project with a simple source code, just for testing purposes: http://pastebin.com/QyQRiQ5p It compiles fine with the w32 target, but not with the x64 target (libary path has been changed accordingly). Hello Why do I get 'debug assertion failed: initialized_' when I try to seek on a boost::filesystem::stream<file_descriptor> ? I also tried with my own class seekable_fd: public device<seekable> { protected file_descriptor file_d; //.... }; to be use the device is seekable, and I get the same assert. A search for "Running specific test units selected by their name" didn't get me to this page (on the first page at least). Adding site::boost.org helped reduce clutter from other unit test systems. Even "Running specific test units selected by their name" site:boost.org (note quotes mean search for exact text) didn't get to the current (or nearly) releases by name, and I didn't spot this page quickly. Using boost.org and entering "Running specific test units selected by their name" into the search box also didn't produce the latest docs page above, only out of date stuff. Limiting search to www.boost.org didn't get 1.44 docs (only misleading ref to 1.38). This may be why there are so many questions from puzzled users on this list? [regex] Boost.Regex + ICU vs. standalone ICU

Hi there, Is there a document out there describing any substantial differences (in particular, w.r.t. semantics and correctness) between using Boost.Regex with ICU support baked in as opposed to ICU's built-in RegexMatcher/RegexPattern classes? I do realize, for example, that the former's API has a 'modern C++' style, whereas the latter is modeled on Java's -- but these differences seem to be mostly cosmetic. Is there anything else I should be aware of before deciding to use one or the other -- performance, functionality, ease-of-use, etc.? Thanks! PS: It doesn't look like xpressive has Unicode support yet, which is why I'm not considering it, but I'd love to know if this impression is false or soon-to-be false.

How to get the temporary directory ?

Hello The new boost::filesystem::unique_path in V3 filesystem is great, but is there any way to also get the temporary directory ? A function that would return ::GetTempPath() on Windows systems and something like /tmp or /var/tmp on POSIX systems ? Or is there some portable way to do this already ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

Bjam problem - again

I've moved to a new machine, and I can run bjam jobs from trunk, but when I try to run sandbox jobs, I am baffled by this message. Unable to load Boost.Build: could not find build system. --------------------------------------------------------- I:\boost-sandbox\boost-build.jam attempted to load the build system by invoking 'boost-build ;' but we were unable to find "bootstrap.jam" in the specified directory Unhelpfully, it doesn't seem to reveal what the 'specified directory' actually is. The files were copied over from a working system, so I can't see what has changed. The jamfile(s) are unchanged. I've got the following environment variables set: I:\boost-sandbox>set boost boost_build_path=i:\boost_1_44_0\tools\build\v2 boost_patches=i:\boost-patches boost_root=i:\boost_1_44_0 boost_sandbox=i:\boost-sandbox boost_trunk=i:\boost-trunk I:\boost-sandbox>bjam --debug_configuration just produces this message. I:\boost-sandbox>bjam -d5 --debug_configuration > debug.log produces the attached log, and the trunk log for comparison. Help! best tool in Boost for (massive) string replacement?

With all the tools available in Boost and coming from a different backgroup is hard for me to choose what is the best tool in Boost to do a massive string replacement. The problem I have is the following, I have a map of replaced and replacing strings std::map<string,string> rep; rep["\\alpha"] = "a"; rep["\\beta"] = "b"; ... let's say about 100 of these. And I have an input/output file (few thousand lines) were I would like to do all this replacements. What is the best tool in boost to do this, Spirit, Regex, tokenizer, StringAlgorithm? My only approach so far is Regex and the implementation is very crude. I read the file line by line and do a loop over the replacement keys for each line. It is not even exploiting the fact that I have a map of replacements (compared to an array of replacements). It seems very slow. (Yes, it is like a 'sed' unix command replacement but with hundreds of replacement strings) Thank you, Alfredo

I have defined a metafunction template<class Left, class Right> struct grammar_less: mpl::false_ {}; which has specialization for some grammar combinations. [Filesystem] String corruption in path in V3 and Boost 1.44

I have the following method: boost::filesystem::path Sfw::CFolders::GetModulePath() { char buffer[MAX_PATH+1]; chknzapi (GetModuleFileName (NULL, buffer, MAX_PATH)); return buffer; // Converted to fs::path object } Under Boost 1.43 this seemed to work fine. The char buffer is used to create a temporary path object, which is returned by value from the function. But when I upgraded to Boost 1.44, and recompiled with BOOST_FILESYSTEM_VERSION=3 and BOOST_FILESYSTEM_NO_DEPRECATED defined, I found that, although it still compiled, it no longer worked properly. Specifically, the contents of the path becomes corrupted to garbage. I got the impression that the path object returned, instead of containing a copy of the character string, retains a pointer to the original char buffer[] on the stack - which is naturally trampled on by subsequent activity. Changing the function to this: boost::filesystem::path Sfw::CFolders::GetModulePath() { char buffer[MAX_PATH+1]; chknzapi (GetModuleFileName (NULL, buffer, MAX_PATH)); return string(buffer); } seems to fix the problem. I admit I have not examined the code for the filesystem::path class - I am roundly intimidated by Boost code. Is my problem caused by a bug in the library introduced by 1.44, or am I just using the library incorrectly? Is my fixed version acceptable, or am I just 'lucky' that it seems to work? The environment is Visual C++ 10, targetting 32-bit. As well as the #defines listed above, I have also got BOOST_NO_RVALUE_REFERENCES defined, to address a compilation problem with another Boost library. Regards Will PS: Apologies if this is a dupe. [bind] Doubt regarding the use of shared_ptr with boost.bind

Hi, I have a doubt on using bind library. I pass the output of Bind to Asio library, and at certain point of time another thread will ask Windows I/O service to execute the function append(): m_ioService.post(m_strand.wrap( boost::bind(&LogWriter::append, (*logWritersItr), _logMessage, _logLevelString) )); The second param of Bind, (*logWritersItr), is a shared_ptr of LogWriter's subclass. The signature of LogWriter::append() is as following: virtual void append(const std::string& _logMessage, const std::string& _logLevelString) = 0; Base on document at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_44_0/libs/bind/bind.html, the way I use bind will duplicate a copy of that shared_ptr. [test] crash with the following test

With boost 1.44.0 (the same happens with 1.43) the following test causes a crash in framework.ipp:388 with a dereference of a NULL pointer. The test_unit* res returns NULL from s_frk_impl().m_test_units[id] where id is 1. id is equal to 1 because when unit_test::framework::run is ran, id is INV_TEST_UNIT_ID is passed to it. Then in framework.ipp:399 if id == INV_TEST_UNIT_ID id is assigned the value in master_test_suite().p_id which is 1. I've verified that when master_test_suite is constructed it assigns INV_TEST_UNIT_ID to p_id, so I'm lost why this is 1 here. [Test] Unit test for const suggestion.

Hi there! I have been having some trouble unit testing const variables/types in my code. The problem I had was basically: The compiler stops the compilation with an error if you try to change a const variable/type. Still you want to write a unit test that checks that the variable cannot be changed. So to check that the variable/type cannot be changed we can just check if the variable/type is const or not. By doing so we indirectly check that the variable/type cannot be changed. I'm sure that the serialized data where it comes this data from is correct. [test] inconsistent dll linkage warnings and BOOST_TEST_DECL and unit_test_main.ipp

Hi, When I compile /boost//unit_test_framework as a dependency in a boost.build project I get errors with BOOST_TEST_DECL with some definitions in .ipp files. It seems BOOST_TEST_DECL is suppose to be used in functions that aren't defined for the user and that must be exported/imported depending if included by test's source or the user's source files. But .ipp files use BOOST_TEST_DECL which are included by the user with msvc-8.0 compiler and then it gives errors about that __declspec(dllimport) doesn't allow definition. To fix it I just changed BOOST_TEST_DECL for BOOST_TEST_CALL_DECL in the .ipp files. It works correctly with gcc in linux though. Regards, -- Felipe Magno de Almeida

Notes: Depending on the path, the result at each level may not be completely determinate, i.e. if the same key appears multiple times, which child is chosen is not specified. [...] --------------- So how is it garantueed that BOOST_FOREACH will iterate over all the children? circular_buffer iterators

I have a simple use case for circular_buffer but I need a few advices. There is one producer and one consumer which only inspects elements and circular buffer will only be keeping history of last CB_SIZE elements. As far as I have understood there are two ways to access buffer elements, using indexes and operator[] or using iterators. I have chosen iterators. Since adding elements to buffer can invalidate iterators what is the proper way to check if they are still valid? Compiling boost::regex v4 with VC8 on Windows

Hi, In my current project boost::regex was used previously from version v3 (boost 1.30.2) and there was no problem. Because I use a third party SDK that contains boost 1.33.1 I want to use boost and regex (v4) from this SDK. In the project there is a source file that includes "boost/regex.hpp". In the release version the file compiles, but in the debug version I get a lot of errors like: char_regex_traits.hpp(34) : error C2976: 'boost::regex_traits' : too few template arguments /basic_regex.hpp(186) : error C2825: 'traits': must be a class or namespace when followed by '::' basic_regex.hpp(186) : error C2039: 'size_type' : is not a member of '`global namespace'' I have now removed the preprocessor definition '_DEBUG' from the VC8 project that contains the source file but this makes no difference. boost thread, shared_mutex deadlock

threadA owns a shared_lock on the mutex, threadB tries to get a unique lock on the mutex and blocks, threadC tries to get a shared_lock on the mutex and blocks also!! I guess there is a LIFO kind of stack serving the mutex to the requesting locks. But what happens if threadA depends on threadC in order to complete and release the lock?I n this case I have got a deadlock. Is this a design flow of my app or boost?

Hello Boost Users, File mentioned in subj (included via boost/serialization/vector.hpp -> /boost/serialization/collections_save_imp.hpp) fails to compile at my Ubuntu box because of blatant use of assert function. Problem was solved by including <boost/assert.hpp> and changing assert to BOOST_ASSERT Is it a bug or just my misconfiguration? Thanks.

How to write a predicate for mpl::find_if that is able to work with placeholders?

Hi list, I have a problem that bothers me since days. It seems, that I am always doing something wrong. I try to write a meta function, that is able to work with placeholders and is applicable to mpl::find_if. I understand the example from the documentation where is_same is used, which is in my understanding also a meta function. is_same gets always the current element of the sequence and compares it with the type given as second template argument to itself. Correct me if I am wrong at this point. So far so good, what I need is not the comparison to the type but instead a comparison with an encapsulated type, a kind of tag type if you want. Here is my class template template<int i> struct Slot { typedef Slot type; typedef int_<i> slot_id; }; and I would like to test whether a certain slot_id is contained within a sequence, because the Slot class template may have different further template arguments, here omitted for the sake of clarity. My created meta function is: template<typename A, typename B> struct contained : is_same< typename A::slot_id ,B> {}; A possible sequence may be defined as: typedef vector<Slot<0>, Slot<10>, Slot<15> > slots; and the find_if's invocation should look like this typedef find_if<slots, contained< _1, int_<10> > >::type t10; and a comparison with the dereferenced returned iterator should give true BOOST_MPL_ASSERT(( is_same< deref<t10>::type, Slot<10> > )); However, until now I have not much luck with my different tries because I get always compile errors that state that the mpl::arg<1> did not has slot_id type. This is totally right, however, how I reach it that not the placeholder is given to the meta function but instead the current element of the sequence to which the iterator points and for which the placeholder is a substitute. If I reflect it seems I have not fully understand how the placeholder mechanism works in detail but I would like to get it. Okey, I have two solution that work and give me the correct result for my problem. I created two different "contained" definitions and find_if invocations 1. version: template<typename Nr> struct contained1 { template <typename Slot> struct apply : ::boost::is_same< typename Slot::slot_id, Nr > {}; }; typedef find_if<slots, contained1<int_<10> > >::type t11; 2. version: struct contained2 { template<typename A, typename B> struct apply : is_same< typename A::slot_id,B>::type {}; }; typedef find_if<slots, bind< contained2, _1, int_<10> > >::type t12; Both versions work, because they are meta function classes, but the invocation of find_if and how the parameter is delivered to the predicate is not clear at least in the first version. In the second version this is clear but we need an additional bind. Is there a way, to get my initial version working, and to use a meta function instead of a meta function class. Now I encountered a little problem, I'm trying to get Kamada Kawai Spring to work, but I do get an compile error when calling put for vertex_index. So, this problem has nothing to do with KKS. [lexical_cast] Canonical representation for numbers?

Hello, does lexical_cast make some kind of guarantees on the output of arithmetic types cast as strings? I'm asking because I need to pass a lexical representation of integers and floats to the constructors of some 3rd party class that expects as input strings containing a certain representation of numbers. E.g., a float represented as string must be either in decimal or scientific notation, with "." as separator, "e" or "E" preceding the exponent, leading sign only in case of negative numbers and so on. So far I've used successfully lexical_cast for such purposes, but I'm wondering if other factors (e.g., locale) could alter the string representation of numbers. Is it safe to assume all numbers will always be cast in the same string structure regardless of platform, i18n, etc.? Cheers, Francesco.

has_trivial_copy for optimization

I noticed poor performance coping a structure with a bunch of optionals. The reason is the cost of checking if the optionals are set. CPU's hate branching it breaks their pipelining. if(that->a) this->a=*that->a; At the end of the day I just wrote a copy construct which does a memcpy(), since the data types were just POD. It makes me a bit nervous since my code might break with a different impl of opitonal. Then I thought hey wouldn't it be cool if defined a metafunction that specified memcpy/memmove are allowed? Hi, I need to be able to construct expressions from a collection of basic units and prefixes. The expression is provided as a string and thus needs to be parsed first. I have been able to achieve without too much trouble. What I am having trouble with is constructing the appropriated expressions using the Boost.Units library. [Serialization] Problem serializing directly and through base pointer in the same program.

Hi, I am using Boost.Serialization to serialize classes through a shared_ptr to an abstract base class. Sometimes, I also serialize these classes directly. This was working for me in version 1.40, but not versions 1.41 or 1.44. If I serialize only shared_ptr<BaseClass> instances, everything is fine. If I link in code that serializes the derived class directly, even if that code is never called, serialization of shared_ptr<BaseClass> instances throws an exception ("unregistered class"). A few notes about what I am doing: I am calling BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in the implementation file for each serializable class. I am using a template function for serialization that accepts any serializable type, creates a new text_oarchiver on the stack, and returns a string. This is called from many places in my application with many different types of things (making it hard to have a central place to put all the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORTs). I am having this problem on RHEL5 with gcc 4.1.2 WITHOUT optimization turned on. It works as expected with -O1 or higher. On WinXP with Visual Studio 2005, it fails in both release and debug mode. The problem also seems to depend on the order that the object files get written into the executable. If I include the file that is calling BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT first, things work as expected, but fail otherwise. (e.g., g++ obj.cpp main.cpp ... works, g++ main.cpp obj.cpp ... fails). Here are 3 source files, obj.h, obj.cpp, main.cpp that demonstrate this problem. The line in main: fromString(toString(obj), obj2); causes the code just before it (using shared_ptr) to fail. If anyone can let me know if I am misusing the library somehow, or if there is a cleaner way to accomplish what I am trying to do, I would be very appreciative. Using boost::interprocess shared memory for both 32-bit and 64-bit processes

Hello, I would like to read/write from/to boost::interprocess shared memory segments from a 32-bit process and a 64-bit process on the same machine. Is this possible? I've attempted to do this, but I seem to be experiencing some compatibility issues. Note that I am reading/writing boost::inteprocess containers to shared memory. For example, in my 32-bit process, I'll add some data to a boost::interprocess::vector and when I read this data from my 64-bit process, it returns garbage. Are there compiler options I can set to make things compatible? If it is not possible to do this, what are some possible solutions for this? Thanks, J

Hello Boost Users, More than three years ago this question arose in this list: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2007/03/26338.php And as I understand it was concluded that overload for non-const references should be added. But now there are only const references to functor available. Was it forgotten or there are some reasons not to have such overload? What is the best way to solve the problem? Mutable members or some proxies look quirky. Thanks!

But why would you want that? boost::shared_ptr<T> q = boost::make_shared<Y>(); is the safe way to do it. No explicit 'new', no explicit 'delete', no problems. Call your insert_me_into routine through the shared_ptr. [SmartPtr] Memory Leak Perhaps

Dear all, (Sorry for cross-posting.) I have a container which stores boost::shared_ptr's. The container has a strange behaviour upon insertion of a SPECIFIC pointer into it. The insertion itself happens with no problem and I can successfully do all my desired operations. Yet, I receive the following strange Win32 exceptions when I'm done and my program is ending (i.e., after the last instruction in my main function): 1) When I run the program from the CodeBlocks IDE (GCC 4.5.1, MinGW, WinXP-SP3), a message box from the JIT debugger pops up which says: "An unhandled Win32 exception occurred in ... [29436]". 2) When I run the same program from MSCV2008, an MSVC++ Debug Library message box pops up which says: "Program ... File f:\dd\... Line 52 Exception _BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID(pHead->nBlockUse)...". I call the above error messages strange because of the observations below: 1) The error reported by MSVC2008 refers to a file on my drive F: whereas, basically, I don't have such a drive on my system! 2) The CodeBlocks debugger (a GUI wrapped around GDB) runs the program with no problems over the debug sessions. Despite that, there are several "Program received signal SIGTRAP, Trace/breakpoint trap." messages in the GDB debug log. Unfortunately, I don't know how to locate the place where these are related to. 3) MSVC2008 has the same behaviour over the debug session. The output of debug session ends with "The program '[29312] EE1Debugger.exe: Native' has exited with code 3 (0x3)." (Please find a copy of the debug log at the P.S. if you're interested.) My first guess was a memory leak but I didn't spot anything which smells like that over numerous debug sessions. I'm generally dubious about that because I'm using shared_ptr's. Shallow copy can't be the problem either again 'cause I only insert shared_ptr's (from just-allocated dynamic memory) into my container. On the other hand, the problem only occurs upon insertion of a SPECIFIC entry into my container. Strangely enough, if I delete that specific entry manually before the end of my program, everything goes fine! I even checked the count of that specific shared_ptr and it was 1, i.e., I'm not deleting anybody else's memory. I am really confused and left with no clue... Any suggestions? P.S. [Concept] boost::FloatingPoint<T>

Hi there, I'd like to make sure that some of my classes are only used with particular value types. This is easy enough to implement for integers, using BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT((boost::Integer<T>)) . However, there is no boost::FloatingPoint<T>, which is a bit odd. Any "2D" iterator?

I have on several occasions encountered situations in which it would be advantageous to view a container of containers as a flat sequence. It seems like there ought to be a natural way to do this using an iterator class. For instance, if you have vector<list<T>> v, you ought to be able to design an iterator which begins at v.begin()->begin() and runs until v.end(), over every element of every list. Does such a thing exist in Boost, or is it planned in the near future?

One possible idea was to register a pair of types -> object which contains the function and the functor. Performance of boost::serialization

Hi! I'm having performance issues with boost::serilaization. First a short description what my data looks like: I serialize a container of boost::shared_ptr<Base> where i put polymorph objects in (no very deep hierarchy ~2 layers). The objects are ~40 byte each. The container has 100 elements in my test case. In the test application i can only serialize that container ~40 times per second. That's to slow for me because the data is used for the network communication. What i've found is this thread: http://old.nabble.com/-Serialization--Speedding-up-client-server-communicat… But it seems that i have to recreate the archive in my case because the data can get send, changed and send again. The documentation says that this behaviour can be disabled through disabling tracking. But that doesn't work for me because I use pointers. Robert Ramey also mentioned that implementing a lightweight version of stringstream could improve the performance. I liked to look at that but it seems that i'm missing something completely. class mystreambuf : public std::streambuf { public: virtual std::streamsize xsputn(const char*_Ptr, std::streamsize _Count) { } }; So this stream buffer does nothing right? But somehow serialization throughput is even worse with that implementation (compared to stringstream). I've never implemented a stream buffer so help would be nice. What are the requirements of boost::serialization for the stream buffer? Also generally it would be nice if you could share your oppinion if you think if the performance of boost::serialization can be tuned to serialize data for network communication. Is it only possible without polymorphism/shared_ptr? Any help is welcome! boost::asio::io_service destructor never returns

Hello, he timer also starts a thread in which an io_service hosts deadline timer until thread is terminated. so a continuous timer. The boost thread which needs the timer is create from within DLL. The DLL ExitInstance function is called, when the hosting App. unloads the DLL. The ExitInstance function stops the thread and before timer. But the io_service destruction in my timer never returns, so the app hangs. This happens NOT, when i am able to call a Dispose Function before ExitInstance is called. However, some application loading my DLL, give not the chance to call this expose function. Anyone know, how to work around this problem ? Here is the code of my timer core. It is the thread which restarts the service until thread is stopped. The thread get's stopped by setting _stop flag and setting deadlime timer to 1 ms in future. summary: hangs when within Dll::ExitInstance destructed. [process] Determine if a process is still running?

Hi all, I'm interested in a cross platform way to determine if a process as identified by process ID is still running. There is no parent/child relationship between the running and detecting processes. However it is easy in my particular scenario for the running process to communicate its ID to the detecting process for later evaluation. I know that I can write separate Windows and Posix implementations that would work. But I'd prefer a cross-platform implementation rather than conditionally calling native API's. I can see that boost::process supports obtaining a process ID. The question is can boost::process use this ID to determine if a given process, which was not launched as a child, is still running? Connection refused after close then open.

I'm trying to limit the connections made to the server. So after creating the acceptor and accepting MAX connections I closed the acceptor. Further connections are properly rejected. However after one of the connections is closed by the client I attempt to re-open the acceptor but further connections are still rejected? Hello, I'm writing a client application that receives from a server UTC timestamps and the server local time-zone. I have to display this time in my client app in terms of the server time-zone (i.e. the server local time should be displayed, not the client one). For this purpose I intended to use local_adjustor, but I see it wants compile-time time-zone value. Is there a similar facility that allows run-time parameters? Thanks.

OpenMP and Boost - can they be used together?

Hello, I wrote a simple parallel program which computes the sum of elements across a matrix using Boost. When I use OpenMP, the program runs give different sums. When I use just simple arrays like double array[N][N], instead of boost::numeric::ublas::matrix<double>, the code work just fine and as expected. Does anyone know what is going on? It looks like the score function is not being modified properly, because Boost array returns just fine. The function compute_score() creates a matrix and computes the sum of its elements in parallel, copying the result to matrix temp and then printing temp, to make sure that the results can be copied in parallel too. The function is run infinitely many times, and if its return values differ then the program exits. Editable XML Serialization

Dear list members, I guess it's one of the hardest search terms around but I would like to know if there is any editable XML serialization provided by Boost or other C++ libraries. And I don't mean the kind of thing that requires you to go jumping around through trees, with iterators etc. I don't want to see any iterator! I don't need to care about descending trees, etc. However, the default serialization class does not allow for different orders of the XML tags, etc. It doesn't use the "ApplicationConfig" string, but just assumes that XML tag should be there if this read operation. If you change anything in the XML file, it is likely you will get a segfault, and you won't know what is causing the problem exactly. It would be so great if there is something like this in which the XML files can actually be edited! I am almost sure that there should be something like that, but I can't find it. ASIO Win32 Thread not terminated

Hi all, I have a question regarding boost::asio: if I run the example boost_asio/example/http/client/async_client.cpp on a Windows 7 or Vista and set a breakpoint on the very last line (return 0;), VisualStudio tells me that (apart from the Main Thread) two Threads named Win32 Thread are still running. Since the whole ASIO code is within the try block, everything connected to the sockets should be terminated when leaving the block, right? I get this behaviour also in a custom project, where I explicitly call close on the socket. My concern is, that a project which uses a lot of socket connections will end up with a dozen or more lingering threads. How can I avoid that? Boost.math statistical distributions - testing inverse gamma and inverse chi squared and Bayesan examples - help wanted.

I am working on adding (by popular request;-) a few more statistical distributions inverse gamma and inverse chi squared are close to being done. But I would be most grateful for help with 1 A few spot test values to check that I haven't made mistakes. Ideally I'd like some very accurate values from the ultimate reference Wolfram Mathematica, or perhaps an R add-on (not in main release?). If anyone can spare a moment to evaluate a few values for me please email me privately. 2 I have some suggestions for an example of using these distribution(s), but would like others. (We like to provide a real-life example of statistics in action in our documentation). I may not need to run all of them always and as of now what I do is to comment out the tests which I dont want to run. [Parameter] abstract base class

I have a design in which I must inherit from a class with a whole lot of construction parameters. I need to have a pure virtual function in the class that inherits from this thing and is then provided by subclasses. Since the classes in question must all accept this huge list of construction parameters I would like to use named parameters. Unfortunately there's a problem caused by the attempt to create a function pointer declaration that takes the base class by value. I don't really understand why this is going on. Instead of just calling the base's constructor directly, the BOOST_PARAMETER_CONSTRUCTOR macro creates a type resolution instantiation with this: boost::parameter::aux::unaryfunptr_arg_type< void(*)(B) >::type 'B' being the base class. This explodes if B is an abstract class. Both g++ 3.4.5 (mingw) and VS2010 hate this line. Before I go about attempting to devise a workaround, what is the purpose of this strange bit of code? Why not just use 'B' directly?? The type resolution metafunction simply returns the 'B' place argument as its type anyway... I note some weird workaround code for ancient versions of MSVC but they seem to be created to make this type resolution thing work, not because 'B' is not known or something. However, I figure the people who wrote this library are smarter and more knowlegeable than I so the fact that I see no need for this code is probably my problem and not a reflection of it being unnecessary. -- http://crazyeddiecpp.blogspot.com/

Hi, I'm trying to communicate with a usb serial device plugged to a USB port. I've seen some examples with boost::asio and connecting to ie: /dev/ttyUSB0 for linux, or COM1 for windows etc. But i need something more robust and multiplatform. Like listing all the available devices and choosing by looking at the vendor id, or device id or something like that. How can i do that? Hello, I recently upgraded boost on my embedded linux platform (m68k coldfire architecture) from version 1.41 (cmake release) to 1.44. [asio] io_service::work and cpu load

Hi, in my DLL I create an endless io_service::work object to assign to a serial_port. I noted that, when I load the application that uses this DLL my CPU load raise up to 50% only when the io_service is created. Any suggestions? regards, Daniele.

Building PBGL

I downloaded PBGL from here: http://osl.iu.edu/research/pbgl/ <http://osl.iu.edu/research/pbgl/>When running CMake, it said that it couldn't find boost_mpi. I read that I need to do ./bjam --with-mpi I did that and it seemed to be successful (though very very quick): -------------------- Component configuration: ... - mpi : building ... ...found 1 target... The Boost C++ Libraries were successfully built! -------------------- So my questions are: 1) Does PBGL not come with the normal boost package from sourceforge ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/boost/files/boost/1.44.0/)? 2) How can I tell if boost_mpi built properly? The problem was that I didn't know if the first argument was a regular pointer or a shared pointer (generic code!). I have also found another solution, that is, by 'always' writing the call like this: foo(get_pointer(x),1); Which will work for all cases of x, and the signature of foo can remain void(X*,int). [BGL] changes in graph => changes in filtered_graph?

Hi, Just a simple question - if I have a filtered_graph fg, based on adjacency_list g, do changes to g automagically turn up in fg? Or do I need to make a new fg, once I have finished changing g? I know I could write a simple test to find out, which I am doing, but I'd be grateful if someone with more experience of BGL could let me know of any exceptions or potential pitfalls. [Filesystem] v3: preferred() vs. make_preferred()

Hello, I have built up a path in which the underlying string has a mixture of slashes and backslashes. I'm passing my_path.string().c_str() to a Windows API function which is getting confused because the string is being provided verbatim. I'm therefore looking to convert the string. According to the Filesystem tutorial (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_44_0/libs/filesystem/v3/doc/tutorial.html) I can use the preferred() observer method to get the string that is suitable for the current (Windows) platform. This sounds like quite a nice design. However, it seems the preferred() method doesn't exist (i.e. the tutorial is wrong). There is a make_preferred() method which is non-const because it *changes the underlying representation* to the format preferred by the operating system. >From my application developer point of view, the preferred() observer is neater/better. I don't care and don't need to know what the underlying path format is. I have no desire to change it. All I am bothered about is that I can store it to a string (perhaps in an external file), and reconstruct the path from the same string. There are a few points in the application however where I need to present the path in a particular way, and it'd be nice to just throw a call to preferred() there. e.g. listBox_.AddString(my_path.preferred().c_str()); I've now got to do: bfs::path pref = my_path; pref.make_preferred(); listBox_.AddString(pref.string().c_str()); because the function that does the rendering of the string to the list box accepts the path as a const boost::filesystem::path& and therefore cannot change it. Wanted to point out the mismatch between the tutorial and the source code, and am wondering on the rationale behind make_preferred() over preferred()? Always possible I'm missing something! Hi, I'm using boost::bind for creating a thread group. When using boost::bind, I can write this: struct X { void foo(int) {} }; shared_ptr<X> x( new X ); // bind takes shared_ptr: bind(&X::foo, x, 3)(); But I can't write this: function<void(X*,int)> foo = &X::foo; // function refuses shared_ptr: foo(x,1); Why doesn't boost::function have the same get_pointer() trick ? I have downloaded the boost v1.44 and would like to see if our usage of the FileSystem library is compatible with Version 3 of library. I am having trouble building the library. Dear all, I have an instance of boost::unordered_map<> somewhere in my codebase (GCC 4.5.1, MinGW, WinXP) with the following funny piece of test code: container_[id].insert(v); cout << "container insertion succesful" << endl; cout << "The container now contains " << container_.size() << " ids in it." << endl; cout << "distance from begin to end = " << distance(container_.begin(), container_.end()) << endl; Strangely enough, it happens sometimes that the output I get is: container insertion succesful The container now contains 2 ids in it. distance from begin to end = 1 I.e., size() != distance(begin(), end()) which is against the documentation: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_44_0/doc/html/boost/unordered_map.html#id13… Am I missing anything? Boost & Pthreads

Hello, I want to build a bunch of different graphs at once,and it looks like the best way to do this is with pthreads. I need to be able to communicate information between the graphs (sadly in real time). Is Boost pthread friendly? I am just thinking of calling read_graphviz per thread, and when a vertex is waiting for data from another graph it just sits and waits. Communication should be easy and done by shared memory. I dont see any problems with this. I am just curious before I take this path that Boost is pthread friendly, or atleast in the way that I described? Thanks, EF
