Hi, In order to avoid reinventing the wheel I was wondering if there is any effort or there was any attempt to further abstract boost::units::quantities from its unit system but with a given dimension. That is, an object that can hold any boost::units::quantity<unit<Dimension, System> > with a given Dimension fir any System. For example (names are not ideal) any<length_dimension> a1 = 2.*si::meter; // RHS is type quantity<si::length> any<length_dimension> a2 = 2.*cgs::centimeter; //RHS is type quantity<cgs::length> any<length_dimension> b1 = 2.3 * si::second; // ERROR. or can hold any other quantity with length dimension (from any system). A sort of boost::variant<quantity<Dimension, system1> , quantity<Dimension, system2>, ... >, (but since the list is of type is not well defined maybe variant is not an options.) I know that there are some unresolved issues, for example, what is the result of a1 + a2, for which I have some solutions in mind. Anyway I just was wondering if this was tried before. And if not, what would be the best way to achieve it (boost::any? boost::variant?). (Note that all quantity<Unit> types has always the sizeof a double.) Alfredo

Boost serialization through base class

Hi, I've tried using the most basic example I can find in the documentation to serialize a class using a pointer to a polymorphic base. However, it only serializes the base class. I'm currently on 1.34.1. Am I missing something obvious? [String algo] Breaking change between 1.41 and 1.44 in split

Hi, I noticed a breaking change in the split function when the input string is empty. Consider the following example: #include <string> #include <vector> #include <iostream> #include <boost/algorithm/string/split.hpp> #include <boost/algorithm/string/classification.hpp> int main() { std::vector<std::string> result; std::string empty_string; boost::algorithm::split( result, empty_string,boost::algorithm::is_any_of( "\t" ),boost::algorithm::token_compress_off); std::cout << "result size: " << result.size() << std::endl; return 0; } With boost 1.41 I get: result_size: 1 With 1.44 I get: result_size: 0 Meaning that splitting an empty string now has a new meaning. All I found to this subject was that 1 seems to be the correct answer (http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2005/07/90266.php) Furthermore, there has been, according to the release notes, no change to string algo since the 1.41. [serialization] Deserialization of a float whose value is infinite throws an archive_exception ("stream error")

Hello, using the Boost.Serialization library version 1.43, I saved to an XML archive a float number which has a value of infinite; then loading that XML file leads to a boost::archive::archive_exception, exception.what() return "stream error". As far I can see, the issue is at this line 209 of \libs\serialization\src\basic_xml_grammar.ipp parse_info<BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME std::basic_string<CharType>::iterator> result = boost::spirit::parse(arg.begin(), arg.end(), rule_); return result.hit; where the parse function fails since result.hit is equal to false. I resolved the issue by checking all the data preventing accurately any infinite value before it is saved to an xml archive, but I wonder if this problem belongs to the library itself or not. [asio]How to insure async handles not be called after calling deadline_timer::cancel()?

The document says, If the timer has already expired when cancel() is called, then the handlers for asynchronous wait operations will: have already been invoked; or have been queued for invocation in the near future. These handlers can no longer be cancelled, and therefore are passed an error code that indicates the successful completion of the wait operation. Does this mean that async handlers may be called after calling deadline_timer::cancel() (say, the second curcumstance) ? If yes, it seems make things unintuitive, eg. delete the resources that associate with handlers after cancel(). Is there any way to suppress or identify these handlers? thx.

Distance/size of boost ranges for std::set.

Hi, I'm working within a C++ library which makes extensive use of the range concept, and also of boost::size. The current version of the library makes use of boost 1_38, however, updating to the newer versions of boost, I've had to replace boost::size with boost::distance as some of the ranges involved, such as std::set don't have random access iterators. However, this presents a problem - it's not really acceptable within our application to have linear time complexity for the size operation on sets when the size member function of the set container is constant time, so I'm looking for some advice. Are we misusing the range concept here and should be using something else? Everything other than this matches up nicely, and it's only the time complexity with regards to boost::distance that will cause problems. Should we simply be extending the boost::size function with additional overloaded versions specific to std::set if we wish to use it in this way (is this reasonable?)? Thanks in advance! [shared_ptr] Better support for allocators

Greetings. shared_ptr<> can be constructed with both custom allocator and deleter. However, there's an unfortunate shortcoming: if the held object needs to do some unusual housekeeping on itself during destruction, it needs to store an additional copy of the allocator or rely on some other custom functionality. It would be considerably more convenient, if shared_ptr<> could invoke a custom deleter with allocator (optionally) supplied: virtual void sp_counted_impl_pda::dispose() { d_(p_, a_); } Another handy alternative is to be able to obtain the allocator out of shared_ptr<> explicitly, in a manner similar to get_deleter(). Tr1 implementation actually constructs a proxy deleter object around the user supplied one, which inherits from allocator, but it's impossible to obtain a reference to it from the outside.

Variadic Macro Data library in the Boost sandbox

This may interest end-users who use macros/Boost PP in their own code to do preprocessor metaprogramming. I have put in the Boost sandbox the Variadic Macro Data library, or VMD. This library supplies variadic macro functionality and integrates variadic macros with the Boost PP library without changing the latter in any way. The library in the sandbox is in the variadic_macro_data folder. The library is a header-only library of macros. There is documentation and tests and the appropriate jamfiles for both. To build the documentation you need doxygen but I have also provided documentation in an html subfolder. Access to the Boost sandbox is explained on the Boost web site at http://www.boost.org/community/sandbox.html. The main use of the library is to be able to pass variadic data to macros, and in particular to extract variadic data elements or convert variadic data to Boost PP data types for use by Boost PP. The library also enhances the functionality of Boost PP tuple data. Installation is simply to take the boost and lib subfolders of the library and copy them to a Boost installation, preferable the trunk where support for variadic macros has been added in Boost config in the form of a BOOST_NO_VARIADIC_MACROS which is defined for compilers/versions which do NOT support variadic macros. To use the macros in the library, just "#include <boost/variadic_macro_data/VariadicMacroData.hpp>". Compilers which support variadic macros are gcc 3.0 and above and VC8 and above among a few others. You could also use the library on any installed Boost installation if the compiler you are using supports variadic macros. There is a discussion in the doc of why you might choose to use variadic macros rather than a Boost PP data type in a macro tailored for end-users. Comments, suggestions, and bug reports are welcome. I have a question in the recent filesystem V3. when using boost::uintmax_t remove_all(const path& p, system::error_code* ec=0); like this : ----------- listing ----------------------- remove_all("C:\\test_path_to_delete"); ------------- end listing --------------- the "C:\\test_path_to_delete" (and its descendent) is successfully deleted (as described in documentation) but when I use it like this : ----------- listing ----------------------- boost::system::error_code ec; remove_all("C:\\test_path_to_delete", ec); ------------- end listing --------------- The directory (and it descendent) aren't removed at all. But when called with remove_all("C:\\test_path_to_delete", ec); ec is allocated and &ec != 0, the check if (ec != 0 && ec) is allways true, and the function returns at the first iteration, I'm maybe wrong, but, isn't this what you meant to do? if (ec != 0 && *ec) return count; Sorry if I have misunderstood something... [asio] accepting all connections in a seperate thread - how?

My server app needs to be "highly responsive". Ie. it shall handle connection attemps with a higher priority. Currently it has the following problem: if a handler function like the one below takes too much time, then unfortunately no new connections will be handled as long as the operation below lasts (ie. new connections have to wait). Which alternatives are there to solve this problem? [fusion] deduce type of resulting vector from a transformation

Hi, (I keep struggling with Boos.Fusion.) How do I deduce the type of the vector resulting from the transformation of another vector? I have a source vector of different types, e.g. vector<quantity<si::length>, quantity<si::mass>, quantity<si::time> > and I have a transformation that is well defined and returns another type depending on the original type. The question is how do I generate a vector type that is the result of the given transformation. [asio] How to get informed about failed connection attempts?

The following code (from the examples) accepts a connection and calls the handler handle_accept(). But it calls the handler only if the connection attempt (internally) succeeds. The handler gets not called if the connection fails (for example when an ssl-connection-attempt fails due to wrong keys etc.). What should I do to get informed also about such failed connection attempts? acceptor_.async_accept(new_session->socket(), boost::bind(&server::handle_accept, this, new_session, boost::asio::placeholders::error));

AIX large file support

Hello, I'm using Boost 1.42, IBM XL C++ 10.1, and AIX 5.3. On AIX the way to enable large file support is to define _LARGE_FILES on the compiler command line. When I attempt to build Boost with this definition, I see errors like the following: "/home/wmason/src/cap-aix/fim/../opt/include/aix/boost/v1.42/boost/date_time/date_parsing.hpp", line 50.21: 1540-0215 (S) The wrong number of arguments have been specified for "tolower(int)". This causes catastrophic failure of Boost to build. Fortunately, by poking around the sources I found that I can enable large file support in Boost on AIX with IBM's compiler by defining _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE. Although this bypasses IBM's recommended way of enabling large file support, it does work to build Boost with large file support. The problem is that my product enables large file support the normal way, which leads me back to the above error when I try to build. I could just manually enable large file support in my code, but this causes portability problems. Not all operating systems support large files the same way, so trying to do it manually on every system will be a headache. Our portability strategy involves enabling large file support the normal way on every system, which in many cases, including AIX's, involves defining things on the command line. Is there any way to use normal large file support on AIX and not have Boost go down in flames? Thanks very much for any help, Will

Trying to use template domain class with BOOST_PROTO_BASIC_EXTENDS ends up in an error leading to the fact this ligne in the macro is incorrect when the Domain is template: BOOST_PROTO_BASIC_EXTENDS_(Expr, Derived, Domain) typedef void proto_is_aggregate_; typedef Domain::proto_generator proto_generator; Obviously this is alckign a typename before Domain::proto_generator if Domain is actually a template class. Thing is used to work before ( aorund 1.40) so I guess somethign changed around here. Hi, I need a variant type object that can hold any type characterized by a template. For example Boost.Units have a family of types parameterized by "System". quantity< unit<dimension, System>, double> suppose dimension is fixed, e.g. typedef boost::units::length dimension is it possible to define a variant over that family of types? I could create a make_variant_over< list of all types > but that can be that list will be fixed and each time I defined a new System the list will have to grow. to simplify the question: template<class T> class dummy{ ... }; variant< "dummy<T>" > v; //for all T If it simplifies things, suppose that all dummy<T> have the same sizeof and that all are convertible to each other. Hi, Excuse my simple minded questions. Sometimes by asking this question (often with negative answer) I understand more on the design of the Boost libraries. Besides possible redundancy, why is that the fusion containers, for example fusion::vector, doesn't have a template member function to extract elements? fusion::vector<double, int, std::string> stuff(1.2, 3, "hola"); stuff.at<2>(); //returns "hola", just like at_c<2>(stuff); Wouldn't it be more consistent with std::vector v, v[2] or v.at(2); By the way, does anybody know where the name given "at_c" (I mean the '_c') comes from? boost/preprocessor checking if argument is a constant

All the BOOST_PP functions only work on integer constants. I want to write macros, where the same interface can be used for both constants and variables, and only call the BOOST_PP if the argument is a constant, and use runtime code if it is a variable. For example, #define TWICE(n) BOOST_PP_IF( _IS_CONSTANT(n), \ BOOST_PP_MUL(n,2), \ ( (n) * 2) ) For more details, you can also see the original question here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3884489/mixing-variables-and-integer-con… Is there a way to do so? Follow up on the original topic: I've uploaded a high-contrast version of the Boost Logo, and moved all other logo related resources to the follow Google Docs folder: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_WA6oW88X1UZWZiNzUwYzctYzg1NS00ZmY5LTllMD… On the logo discussion: Various explanation could be made for the logo. For some these are molecular structures; for others this is a small matrix of hexagonal cells from a beehive; some may claim these are interconnected - in some places overlapping - software components etc. Probably all of these seem reasonable, maybe non of these for someone. My point is that one could come up with any justification for the hexagons, but it will not change others mindset on it. On the other hand... ... this is an abstract logo, which is fairly simple (well at least the stylized form), it does not bring any cultural or any specific technology connotations, and most importantly provides / provided a "face" for Boost in the last 4 (or 5?) years. This is a strong connection in public mind between the Boost community and the logo; where the previous one defines the later - which (the community, and the Boost project) has excellent reputation, which made the logo highly recognizable (like any famous company brand). The point is, it is not the logo which defines Boost, but the other way around. Ofc. if the logo was something like this: http://preview.tinyurl.com/2wcg757 that would be arguably a big deflection compared to the spirit of Boost, but I do not think this applies to the current case (chemical analogy). The other important point is that most of the developers that used Boost in the previous years, already made the connection between the logo and the Boost Libraries; making a radical change might be a bad idea, unless there is a really strong reason to do that (for example Boost ceases using C++, and focusing on Objective C from now), otherwise keeping the continuity is important. I hope the high contrast version of the logo is usable, let me know if you need further help with it. I also hope that I was able to give you some background on the abstract hexagons. Hi, This can be an exercise for definining the scope of Boost.Proto for little things. I have a histogram class that internally looks like this class histogram{ ... bool operator()(double const& x){return impl.increment(x);} bool operator()(double const& x, double const& weight){return impl.accumulate(x, weight);} }; histogram h( .. bin spec .. ); double x = ... ; so to add a count to the bin of x, I call h(x); to add a count with weigh w to bin x, I call h(x,w); so far so good. Now suppose I want to "improve" the syntax. The desired syntax would be: h[x]++; h[x]+=w; I don't want to expose the internal representation of the bins, so I can't return a reference to something from h[x]. So I guess we can create a proxy of the expression h[x] , "subindex of historgram with double". The proxy can be used with the syntax to call either accumulate or increment depending on the application of += or + + to the proxy. I have an application, which spawns off other applications. As input, it takes in environment variables and arguments to pass to the resultant application. For instance: mutate -E "env_var1=val" -a "." ls This will run: ls . and the environment will only have "env_var1" equal to "val" So. Something funny comes along when I try to pass "-e" as an argument. So, in the above would be: mutate -a "-e" -a "foo" xterm The program options parser attempts to parse the "-e", and says "I don't know what it is". Any thoughts on having it skip that option? But when trying to use the library I get a lot of linker errors in my project: 1>Linking... 1>libboost_log-vc90-mt-gd-1_44.lib(text_file_backend.obj) : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "class boost::filesystem2::file_status [...] (Very long error messages containing decorated names. The above is just the start) Linker path settings should be correct, since the linker correctly finds libboost_log-vc90-mt-gd-1_44.lib. Also the project is using other Boost libraries (Asio, shared-ptr, bind, posix-time, etc) without problems. Anyone managed to compile and use Boost.Log on MSVC 2008 and can help? For a given member function of the form void foo::f0(), passing this to boost bind results in the class instance being copied 7 times. Storing the result of bind in boost function incurs another 11 copies (code and results are here: http://boost.codepad.org/6jBmoKuj) Using tr1::bind and function has slightly better results, but still not ideal: Doing just tr1::bind results in the class instance being copied 4 times. Boost Logos: proposed high constrast logo

Hi all, In my opinion there should be a high contrast version of the Boost logo . (by that I mean either black and white or high contrast with very mild gradients on white background). Particularly I am talking about the three hexagons icon. As an example, the first attachment here has the official logo in SVG format. Because of the background gradient and the gradient fill of the hexagon it is not *obvious* how to convert this to high contrast. What should be replaced by black (or solid blue)? the hexagon filling? the hexagon borders? the background? A possible high contrast logo is attached in the second file. By no means official or the best option, it is just an possibility, maybe the simplest one. *Just an example*. Note that even the darkest blue used in the gradient of the official logo is not enough to contrast with white, so I used a darker blue. The reason I think a high contrast logo is the following: If you want to have a document printing quality (or high quality PDF) you need a vector format. If the printing or visualization is done in black and white, the logo should have high contrast otherwise the appearance will be very device dependent. While everyone should take care in printing in good devices having a logo that is barely visible in black/white/grey printing in some devices is not acceptable. As a test for what makes a high contrast logo a good one, just try printing and small version (one centimeter square) of the logo in a black and white laser printer with random text around it and you will see the problem with the low contrast original logo. It will appear like a grey blob at best. Please this thread is not about a new logo design just an adaptation of the existing one. Hey there, I've been using SC for a while and something has been bugging me - given a state machine with: OuterSt, OneSt and TwoSt as well as OneEv and TwoEv that are handled by OneSt and TwoSt respectively, it is possible to send a wrong event to either of the last two states. Such an "unhandled" event will be forwarded to OuterSt and then quietly eaten. My question is as follows - is it possible to define some kind of "catch all" handler in the OuterSt? I have already fixed a tricky bug in my code where a submitted event was lost, and wonder if there is a simple way to handle these situations? I can certainly add a custom_reaction<>(X) for each possible event to the OuterSt and catch issues that way, but that's far from ideal. Any suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. perhaps a compromise solution would be to add something like this to OuterSt: sc::bug<OneEv> sc::bug<TwoEv> but that would effectively limit handling to issuing an assert(false)... I have to parse some byte sequence represented as hex pairs: 00 ce ab 00 de ad be ef ... If I use the parser like this: boost::spirit::qi::uint_parser<unsigned char, 16, 2,2> hex_byte; std::string str("..."); std::vector<byte_t> vec; iter_type curr=str.begin(), end=str.end(); bool r=phrase_parse(curr, end, +hex_byte, space, vec); Is vec going to be copied somewhere inside of qi? Or are the bytes directly appended to the vec? I would like to reserver some space for the maximum possible input and avoid additional internal copies inside of qi... How does the behaviour changes std::vector<byte_t> is part of the fusion::map like fusion::map < fusion::pair<tag1, string> , fusion::pair<tag2, string> ... , fusion::pair<tagN, std::vector<byte_t> > > data_item; Are the fields of the map used directly while parsing, or are there some temporaries, which will be first created (somewhere inside qi core) and filled with data and afterwards assigned to the corresponding map field? Hi folks, I'm trying to build a python extension with statically linked libboost_python on Linux. I built boost_python with ./bjam -q --layout=system --with-python toolset=gcc variant=release link=static threading=multi runtime-link=static which results in a 700kb libboost_python.a Then I try to build the hello world example located at /libs/python/example/tutorial but I fail, because their remain undefined symbols, despite the fact I did define BOOST_PYTHON_STATIC_LIB. [Fusion] How to join more than two sequences

Hi All I've noticed the function "join" in the boost fusion library. However, it only joins two sequences. Was wondering whether there is (or can be easily made) a function that joins any number of sequences. For example: new_join(make_vector(1,2,3), make_vector(4,5), make_vector(6)) -> is the sequence 1,2,3,4,5,6 AND/OR (pass parameters in a sequence) new_join(make_vector(make_ vector(1,2,3), make_vector(4,5), make_vector(6))) -> is the sequence 1,2,3,4,5,6 I'd prefer both the first and second versions, but even one version would be ok. Hello, I got an error from the Sun Studio 12.2 (CC 5.11) when trying to compile my sources. The error comes out of the Boost.Proto library (actually I'm doing something with Boost.Spirit and Boost.Spirit is using Boost.Proto ..., but I don't think that the problem is in the client code, it seems to come from the buggy compiler). I'm using Boost 1.43. This is what I got from the compiler: "...include/boost/proto/detail/decltype.hpp", line 343: Error: Partial specialization parameter V is not used in the arguments. I performed some more experiments, encountering the bug issue you mentioned and in my case it seems being the pop_front method that ruins the iterators, despite of using interlocking mechanism. Perhaps, it's the matter of timings: that's why it doesn't trigger when I use other locking methods. But I should uproot using deques in my code, anyway. It may show up again on faster or slower machines. Well, I will be aware of danger of using deques in MSVS. Never liked MS, to say the truth... :) But have to deal with it sometimes. Still, remains the question what to do with constructor of boost::thread in MSVS 2010. It fails with access violation, without any specific conditions, in simple plain piece of code.

timezone database discrepancy

I am calculating start/end time of the daylight savings time using tz_database and default timezone database file "date_time_zonespec.csv" that comes with boost 1_44. I found discrepancy between results of the calculation for "America/Chicago" region and published data. for years 2010-2007 the results match. However, for the 2006 calendar year, published results from several sources are: Start: April 2 End: October 29 and calculated results are: Start: March 12 End November 5 I will appreciate any advise/comments on how to deal with this issue.

Serialize a class, call new() in constructor

The problem is, that classA class calls new of classB in constructor and after that the load_construct_data is called and also calls a new of classB. So I have two objects of classB. weird boost::asio problems opening acceptor

I have a server where there must be only one instance of it for a given machine on a given port number. The error is 'Already open'. The exception gets thrown from the call to open. What am I doing wrong please? If don't do the open etc then I can run up a second instance and it will have the port also. It is as if SO_REUSEADDR is true. I always thought that SO_REUSEADDR was false by default. When I run it in the debugger and breakpoint before the call to open , the process has the port open for listening, as revealed by 'netstat -a'. It is as if it has already done the open with SO_REUSEADDR set to true. I am using boost version 1.42.0 on Windoze-XP compiled with Visual Studio 2005 (don't laugh....). Problems with boost 1.44.0 and MSVC: boost::mutex::scoped_lock and std::deque in multithreaded application

Greetings, ppl. I've got strange problems with the latest stable boost (1.44.0) and MSVS studios 2005 and 2010. The first problem I got (it seems being not dependent on boost version) was the heap allocation exception when using mutex::scoped_lock to guard references to std::deque from different threads in multithreaded application. I used MSVS SP1 compiler I checked it with boost 1.41.0 and it appeared there too, so it's not the bug of the latest version, for sure. I was not sure if it wasn't a bug of STL, but the strange thing was that if I used usual mutex lock/unlock functions instead of scoped_lock - it went just perfectly. That's why I decided to ask here, instead of blaming STL. I'm not sure if it's a bug to send it to a buglist. I'm far from being a newbie in multithreading programming, but I cannot guess where it comes from and I've got too little time to get deep into detailed boost debug. I've written a little test application that reveals the problem, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to insert the code right here, but I can send it on request. The second problem raised up when I tried to compile the same test application with MSVS 2010. I didn't use the MSVS 2010 for my application, but I decided to test if it was a problem with STL libs. That result was access violation in the boost::thread constructor. It goes well under MSVS 2005, though. And the constructor is ok when using MSVS 2010 with boost 1.41.0 too. I found some info in the internet that this bug appeared in boost 1.43.0, but was fixed. Bug I could not find it in bugs list of boost, so I decided to ask about it here. Meantime, the problem with heap allocation remained, with MSVS 2010 and boost 1.41.0. I'm not sure what to do with this issues. Maybe these are known problems? Sincerely, Yana.

Using this tutorial I tried to build the first sample with Windows Visual C++ 6.0. PGI compile problem with lanczos_sse2.hpp

I am trying to link to a library that uses some code from boost. So far I have been able to build the code under gcc, intel and pathscale compilers. However, I get about 100 errors from this file under pgi (versions 7.1, 7.2 and 10.1) boost/boost/math/special_functions/detail/lanczos_sse2.hpp I have copied the first few error messages to the end of this email. My suspicion is that some settings are not correct for this compilation under PGI. I did check that the header files used by "lanczos_sse2.hpp" were present. I don't have any experience with the SSE/SSE2 optimizations. FYI, our build system uses bjam, so there is a Jamfile for boost, which I can send if needed. [serialization] boost::serialization adds huge amounts of exports to resultant Windows PE file

Hey guys, I am using boost::serialization from 1.44.0. One thing that I noticed is that linking statically to the serialization libs will add several hundred exports in the final exe file that I get. Using `dumpbin /exports my_program.exe` Here's a brief illustration: Let's say we have a typical Hello World program (code example at the end of this message) that uses `iostream`. Here's what we get when we run `dumpbin /exports my_program.exe`. Boost Logos

Dear all, I remember that there was a discussion a while ago about logos. Among the proposals was a logo of the type "This code uses Boost". I'd like to acknowledge the great work of the Boost library authors and would thus like to add the logo to the manual of our software. At http://www.boost.org/community/review_schedule.html there is a link for the yet to be reviewed Boost Lexer library. It points to http://boost- consulting.com/vault/index.php? action=downloadfile&filename=boost.lexer.zip&directory=Strings%20-%20Text% 20Processing but the directory it goes to has no file that is obviously the Boost Lexer library. Has it been moved somewhere else? Is there somewhere else I could get it from? Also (unrelated) why isn't Boost 1.44 in the table under "Past Review Results and Milestones"? I would have expected it since the Noost releases prior to that are listed there. And one last question, where can I get a copy of Steven Watanabe's Switch library? On that same page I can see the "accepted" email but I can't figure out where to find the actual library. Thanks very much.

[Boost.Units] radians and degrees

Dear List, I use VS2010. I have just ventured into Boost.Units as me and my colleagues frequently make errors in our code by mixing up degrees and radians (function takes one but we supply it the other). In some cases a degree representation makes sense, in other the radian representation. Basically, I want to use radian and degree quantities and use implicit conversions to freely interchange between the two (say a user supplies degrees to a function whose declaration asks for radians, or vice versa, things should simply be converted on the fly so that the function has the input it expects and its output is not wrong). I have no need for the SI system or anything else. I am however having some trouble understanding something that must be rather basic. Consider the following code: ---- #include <boost/units/quantity.hpp> #include <boost/units/systems/si/plane_angle.hpp> #include <boost/units/systems/angle/degrees.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::plane_angle> r(.38*boost::units::si::radian); boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::plane_angle> d(6*boost::units::degree::degree); r = 2.*d; d = 6*boost::units::degree::degree; d = 2.*r; return 1; } ---- The declaration of d works just fine, but assigning exactly the same to d two lines below does not, giving me a compilation error where the crux is "error C2338: (is_implicitly_convertible<Unit2,unit_type>::value == true)". I am thinking that the problem here is that boost::units::degree::degree is not part of the SI system, but of the system defined in boost/units/systems/angle/degrees.hpp. However, why does the declaration initialization two lines above work fine? In any case, for my usage case, should I simply build a minimal system with one dimension, plane_angle, define radian (most stuff does happen in radian, so guess it would cut down on conversions) as the base unit and supply degree as well? How would I then supply degree? All the examples define other units (such as feet instead of meters) in seperate systems using make_system, wouldn't that lead to the problems I observe above? Maybe a very stupid question, but I haven't quite wrapped my head around this: how do I then represent a value in degrees, or is this irrelevant? Any pointers much appreciated! How to do this in asio? Does the client need to use an acceptor? (ok, this maybe sounds non-sensical, but who knows... :-)

[BGL] SPPRC formulation

Hi, I would like to use the r_c_shortest_paths algorithm. My constraint is that given pairs of vertices i, j (each i have a single mate j) must have a distance between them which is consistent with a given distribution. I am looking for the path which is most consistent with this distribution. Does anybody have any experience of formulating such a constraint in BGL? The second problem is that I am currently modelling the problem with an undirected graph. The edges could be viewed as bi-directional, but only due to the double stranded nature of DNA. Once I have started on a path I just choose the label which is consistent with the direction I am going, but the graph is essentially undirected, you can always go in either direction down an edge. Could an undirected graph be used with this algorithm or must I use a directed graph? I have tried to ask this question before, hopefully this time I have phrased it better - plus I am actually ready to code it now. As always, any advice gratefully received. CreateProcess

Hello all, I was asking if there is CreateProcess like functionailty in Boost. In our application we lock files, and spawn a process (thru _spawn). However it seems that m$ implemented in this way that handles are inherited by child process. This means that the child process is also getting the handle of the locked file, preventing the main application to write to this locked file. So I was wondering if there is a portable c++ way to create prcoesses. Otheriwse we have to write it ourselves and spying the sources of m$ it seems that parsing the commandline is not trivial.

boost serialize - stack overflow for large problems

I have implemented the serialization routine for a rather complex structure with many nested classes. The serialization seems to work for small examples, however, for bigger data sets, I get a stack overflow error. If I increase the stack size from 8MB to 20MB, the examples seems to work. However, I'd like to optimize the code the way that I do not need to increase the stack size (especially, since not all users can do that themselves) So here are my questions: 1. Why is the required stack size different for different data sets different. The structure of the datasets is identical, only the number of data sets differs - so why is the recursive level different? The only thing I can imagine is, that I have a class (container) with a vector of objects. Each object stores a pointer to the container class. Is it possible that once serialization in the container class starts, that there is a recursive serialization pattern? This seems to be support by the fact that the objects in the container class are not serialized in the same way as they are stored in the container. class container { std::vector<object*> myObjects; }; class object { const container* myContainer; } 2. How can I try to decrease the required stack size for the serialization routines and is there a way to estimate the required stack size for a specific problem a priori, so that I can throw an exception with an error message manually instead of having a segmentation fault. Hello, I have a Texas Instruments OMAP3 EVM board with an ARMv7 processor and a DSP, running Linux with kernel 2.6.32 and cross compiling with CodeSourcery's gnu g++ 4.3.3. I would like to know if any of boost is usable on this platform? I am most interested in the threading, bind, signals, and asio. [BGL] visualizing large graphs

Hi, although this might seem a bit off-topic, I think it is an important topic and might be very well interesting for some of us. The boost graph library provides methods to export graphs e.g. for the use with graphviz. However, this is a rather "one-way" solution. Besides that, it is difficult to handle large graphs with graphviz. Therefore, I was wondering if there have been some recent developments here? I would especially be interested in a solution that allows the direct visualisation of a graph (even previously serialized), possibly integrating ways to filter out some of the data in order to be able to visualize the graph in some way. It is clear to me that visualizing arbitrarily large graphs will be limited by physical limitations mostly (RAM etc.). But I would find it very convenient to at least load the graph, set some filters, so that I don't need to do this seperatly via a C++-program. Actually, I am writing my graph to a format that can be visualized by Cytoscape. Unfortunately, this suffers from large limitations on the size of the graph (number of edges and nodes). I am looking forward to hear your ideas about this and possible suggestions about libraries or programs that might achieve this goal. Thank you. Best regards, Cedric

Hi, when calling get_override() method while trying to find python overload and overload is not found exception in python is set. This is because PyObject_GetAttrString() is used for retrieving the attribute. If attribute is not found, PyObject_GetAttrString() set the exception. This is using python 3.1. I always found the rules for printf formatting, which Boost.Format uses, cryptic. I usually find the right combination by trial and error. In this case I want to print decimal numbers with both fixed number of integer digits and decimal digits. I replaced `force_include.hpp` with the following two lines and then actually recompiled boost::serialization #define BOOST_DLLEXPORT #define BOOST_USED The code bloat is gone (as shown by `dumpbin /exports`, yes, actually by 8MB), *and* the resulting program actually compiles and runs fine (sample program at: http://boost.codepad.org/f9LodmfD **). I tested again at MSVC2010 at both Release|x64 and Release|Win32. This seems to be a rather intrusive hack that seems to have become outdated with MSVC2010 (haven't tested with MSVC2005 and MSVC2008 yet. It's installed on another machine). Right now, `force_include.hpp` reads this: #if defined(BOOST_HAS_DECLSPEC) && !defined(__COMO__) // ... # define BOOST_DLLEXPORT __declspec(dllexport) This means we are unconditionally doing this explosive exports for all MS platforms. Even Release mode cannot optimize away these explicitly marked DLL exports. Should we at least have an option to turn off this very intrusive workaround? Right now my only option is to patch `force_include.hpp` manually. There might be some people that actually need the hack, but for some of us who's dug into it and actually confirmed it's not needed, it would be nice to be able to turn that off since the bloat introduced is definitely non-trivial. ** Of course I don't mean this particular sample program generates 8MB of export symbols. This is only to show what I mean by "it compiles and runs." The actual program that resulted from boost::serialization's 8MB bloat contained 100+ "exported" classes serialized through base pointers. The specs is quite close to what I showed in the sample program. ** That doesn't seem to play well with CodePad's boost. Oh well. Best regards, Chris Yuen

Hello I am having a problem compiling with boost thread. I have installed gcc 4.5.1 on my linux platform recently. I am using boost libraries 1.42. I do understand that this library has not been tested with this compiler. My question is, I see that 1.44 version of boost has been tested with gcc 4.5.1 on redhat. Making boost::any play nice in function overloads

Hi - I've got a method which should take a variety of types and with the exception of taking a function pointer it shouldn't care about which types it's getting, so I thought that a boost::any would be a nice way to achieve this. Here's a simplified prototype: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ class Table { public: // Base case void doSomething(const boost::any& input); // Special overload for function pointers for some special reason. // // Has logic to interpret NULL pointer as integer 0 and pass to // "base" boost::any case. void doSomething(void (*f)(void)); }; ------------------------------------------------------------------------ When I tried to call doSomething with a string literal argument (i.e. table.doSomething("Hello")), it of course failed since boost:any can't be initialized with an array. Okay - no problem. Another overload should do the trick, right? I couldn't add an overload for const char* directly since that would conflict with the overload for the function pointer (i.e. table.doSomething(0) would be ambiguous between the function pointer and the const char*). [iostreams] tellg not supported on devices / filters that aren't seekable

I find it inconvenient that tellg isn't supported on filters / devices that isn't seekable, since tellg doesn't really seek but simply reports the current read head position. This call doesn't really alter the read head and should in this instance be supported, but isn't.

But still, even with force_include.hpp (supposedly) out of the way, I still see the swamp of exported symbols. How can I experiment with disabling this DLL export thingie? Do I need to recompile boost::serialization for this change? I assumed not since the exported symbols are template instantiations which should only have happened when the client code compiled. Is there any other ways around this? These exported symbols add a hideously huge amount of overhead to the final exe. I see in the documentation the class positional_options_description is used to list names for positional options. But nowhere in the documentation does it say how to pass this to the parser! ADDENDUM (NB I'm using release boost 1.44 with Visual C++ 2008 SP1 with the latest patches) test_dll_plugin in the serialization test suite seems to suffer from the same problem I'm having I've created two standard empty win32 console projects in Visual Studio: * one to build a DLL with polymorphic_base.cpp and polymorphic_derived2.cpp * one to build an EXE client for the above DLL containing only test_dll_plugin.cpp The assert at line 82 of test_dll_plugin.cpp fails at runtime, showing the EXE does not have registered ETI for the polymorphic_derived2 type linked into the DLL. Hi there! Does boost::serialization work with interfaces and static factory methods? (shown below) Note how the Concrete type is not actually known at the point where the archive is instantiated, and the two are actually in two different modules. In fact, I have indeed tried the following line in ConcreteType.cpp but the registration is not seen by the text_oarchive in DLL 2 BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID(ConcreteType, "ConcreteType") Perhaps using a singleton archive on which I register every type (from Multiple DLLs) and that I use to serialize every object? But how would I provide access to register_type on such a singleton? And how would I use it on different stream instances? (a clone?) I m trawling through the boost::serialization code, and cannot find a way to make it work. SUN CC 5.2 support in Boost 1.43?

Hi, I wrote a C++ project using OpenMP, GCC and Boost. When I enable nested parallelism (omp_set_nested(1)), repeated runs of the same piece of code produce different results, which suggests that there is a race condition somewhere, but I do not see anything wrong with the logic of my code, so I decided to use Sun Studio's Thread Analyzer to analyze my code. This requires me to build my project with Sun's CC 5.2, which fails with the following warning message from Boost: "/h/96/g4max/local/boost64/include/boost/numeric/ublas/detail/config.hpp", line 170: Error: #error Your compiler and/or configuration is unsupported by this verions of uBLAS. Define BOOST_UBLAS_UNSUPPORTED_COMPILER=0 to override this message. Boost 1.32.0 includes uBLAS with support for many older compilers.. Is it even possible to compile Boost 1.43 with Sun's CC? I tried setting user-config.jam and then build with: ./bootstrap.sh --prefix=/install_dir ./bjam --user-config=user-config.jam -j16 toolset=sun ./bjam install where user-config.jam is: using sun : 5.2 : /my_sun_location/CC : -library=stlport4 -features=tmplife -features=tmplrefstatic ; I get a lot of warnings and error messages... So, my questions are: 1) What is the best way to check parallel code for race conditions using some free tool? 2) If one such free tool is Sun Studio, then how can I get Boost working with it? 3) If someone here knows OpenMP, could it be that omp_set_nested() produces a race condition within a Boost library? My codes run fine with omp_set_dynamic(1), but as soon as I enable nesting I get race conditions. Thanks! Max

System library, error_category

I've derived a class from error_category to categorize errors associated with my class. Elsewhere, I want to test to see if an error code I've gotten (from an exception) is one of those, or not. A line like if (X.code().category != mycategory) ... should do the trick. 'mycategory' is the same object used to create error codes in my class: a single instance of the derived error_category class. However, this gives ambiguities in matching the operator. This makes it quite unfriendly to use. I have to cast the right-hand-side to the base class reference, for example. If I reversed the arguments, the list of possible matches the compiler mentioned did not even include the one I wanted. [serialization] Deserialize by pointer without calling new/constructor

I'm working on integrating Boost serialization into an OMNeT++ simulation as a means of saving a partial simulation state (to speed up statistical testing). The problem I am running into is related to the process of deserializing a derived-class object by a base-class pointer without tracking. As far as I can tell, in this case the serialization library normally: 1. Determines the most-derived type 2. Allocates memory for that type of object 3. Updates the pointer to point the the above allocated memory block 4. Invokes placement new and the default constructor (overloadable by load_construct_data) 5. Calls the class' serialize() or load() method on the newly-constructed object However, I have a case where I start out with an existing derived-class object that is partially initialized, and I just want to call the serialize() or load() method for it using a base-class pointer (i.e., no memory allocation since that's already done, and no constructor call since that's also already done.) Is this possible or am I trying to do something the serialization library is not meant for? Thanks, Adam Verigin

The problem occurs at runtime. I 've figured out that the problem is due to the nested data structure. I have kind of a graph, where every node stores a pointer to the neighboring node. This means, once I start to serialize the first node, all the neighboring nodes have to be serialized as well, which finally ends up with at many recursive function calls as I have nodes. This is probably similar to a linked list, where once the first entry is serialized, a pointer to the next element is serialized and so on, which finally ends up with as many recursive function calls as there are element in the list. Is there a clever way to restructure the serialization (e.g. first serializing all the nodes, and in a second step, when the nodes have been created, serialize there connectivity without introducing two separate serialize routines?) The stack depth should be proportional to the depth of your class data. It should be easy to check this. Setup your debugger to trap on stack overflow. When it does, show a back trace. You should be able to easily determine the source of the stack usage. I could be some deeply recursive structure, a coding error or who knows. Do this analysis is much more time efficient than me trying to guess what the problem might be. > 2. I’ve created a graph with the following attributes: typedef adjacency_list <vecS, vecS, undirectedS> Graph; Graph G1; But I’m struggling to get the Done object created right to pass into the calculation. Compiling / Linking Boost::RegEx for x64 targets fails

Hi, I used the boost library installer from boostpro to install the 32 bit version on my system. All projects compile and link fine for the 32 bit target in Visual Studio 2005. But when I switch to the x64 platform target, I get linker errors. So I decided to compile boost myself, with the following command: bjam.exe --build-dir=e:\boost-build --build-type=complete --toolset=msvc --address-model=64 and installed the result in a separate lib_x64 folder in the boost installation from boostpro. All projects with the x64 target add this path to the linker settings. The libs are found, but when I compile the project, I get the following linker errors: http://pastebin.com/saQMtFwX All problems seem to be related to the regex library. I then created a complete new project with a simple source code, just for testing purposes: http://pastebin.com/QyQRiQ5p It compiles fine with the w32 target, but not with the x64 target (libary path has been changed accordingly). Hello Why do I get 'debug assertion failed: initialized_' when I try to seek on a boost::filesystem::stream<file_descriptor> ? I also tried with my own class seekable_fd: public device<seekable> { protected file_descriptor file_d; //.... }; to be use the device is seekable, and I get the same assert. A search for "Running specific test units selected by their name" didn't get me to this page (on the first page at least). Adding site::boost.org helped reduce clutter from other unit test systems. Even "Running specific test units selected by their name" site:boost.org (note quotes mean search for exact text) didn't get to the current (or nearly) releases by name, and I didn't spot this page quickly. Using boost.org and entering "Running specific test units selected by their name" into the search box also didn't produce the latest docs page above, only out of date stuff. Limiting search to www.boost.org didn't get 1.44 docs (only misleading ref to 1.38). This may be why there are so many questions from puzzled users on this list? [regex] Boost.Regex + ICU vs. standalone ICU

Hi there, Is there a document out there describing any substantial differences (in particular, w.r.t. semantics and correctness) between using Boost.Regex with ICU support baked in as opposed to ICU's built-in RegexMatcher/RegexPattern classes? I do realize, for example, that the former's API has a 'modern C++' style, whereas the latter is modeled on Java's -- but these differences seem to be mostly cosmetic. Is there anything else I should be aware of before deciding to use one or the other -- performance, functionality, ease-of-use, etc.? Thanks! PS: It doesn't look like xpressive has Unicode support yet, which is why I'm not considering it, but I'd love to know if this impression is false or soon-to-be false.

How to get the temporary directory ?

Hello The new boost::filesystem::unique_path in V3 filesystem is great, but is there any way to also get the temporary directory ? A function that would return ::GetTempPath() on Windows systems and something like /tmp or /var/tmp on POSIX systems ? Or is there some portable way to do this already ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

Bjam problem - again

I've moved to a new machine, and I can run bjam jobs from trunk, but when I try to run sandbox jobs, I am baffled by this message. Unable to load Boost.Build: could not find build system. --------------------------------------------------------- I:\boost-sandbox\boost-build.jam attempted to load the build system by invoking 'boost-build ;' but we were unable to find "bootstrap.jam" in the specified directory Unhelpfully, it doesn't seem to reveal what the 'specified directory' actually is. The files were copied over from a working system, so I can't see what has changed. The jamfile(s) are unchanged. I've got the following environment variables set: I:\boost-sandbox>set boost boost_build_path=i:\boost_1_44_0\tools\build\v2 boost_patches=i:\boost-patches boost_root=i:\boost_1_44_0 boost_sandbox=i:\boost-sandbox boost_trunk=i:\boost-trunk I:\boost-sandbox>bjam --debug_configuration just produces this message. I:\boost-sandbox>bjam -d5 --debug_configuration > debug.log produces the attached log, and the trunk log for comparison. Help! best tool in Boost for (massive) string replacement?

With all the tools available in Boost and coming from a different backgroup is hard for me to choose what is the best tool in Boost to do a massive string replacement. The problem I have is the following, I have a map of replaced and replacing strings std::map<string,string> rep; rep["\\alpha"] = "a"; rep["\\beta"] = "b"; ... let's say about 100 of these. And I have an input/output file (few thousand lines) were I would like to do all this replacements. What is the best tool in boost to do this, Spirit, Regex, tokenizer, StringAlgorithm? My only approach so far is Regex and the implementation is very crude. I read the file line by line and do a loop over the replacement keys for each line. It is not even exploiting the fact that I have a map of replacements (compared to an array of replacements). It seems very slow. (Yes, it is like a 'sed' unix command replacement but with hundreds of replacement strings) Thank you, Alfredo

Hi, ist there a way to access the grammar that was used to construct an expression? I have defined a metafunction template<class Left, class Right> struct grammar_less: mpl::false_ {}; which has specialization for some grammar combinations. Now I want to define a function that can take two arguments so that child0.grammar < child1.grammar Any idea how to do that? My test-code is attached. Regards, Roland
