Ok, thank you. Is there another way than binary modules loaded at run-time? What are the options for creating modular applications with boost? Regards Peter First, at the moment there is no standard way to do this. Second, there is a library that is meant to do this and will be proposed to boost once complete enough. It's boost::extension : http://boost-extension.redshoelace.com/docs/boost/extension/index.html Now, (correct me if I'm wrong), the author said some months/years ago that he cant continue developpement because of language limitations that C++0x will certainly fix (I'm not sure what but I guess it's about ABI?). Anyway, it seems to be working and used by some people, but not as complete as the author would like too. (and the documentation could be improved I think). There are other libraries providing the same functionallity, like Poco's Shared Libraries ( http://pocoproject.org/slides/120-SharedLibraries.pdf ). Boost::extension and Poco Shared Libraries are cross-platform. Other than that and calling platform-specific API functions, there is no boost library that allows binary modules loaded at run-time. But I guess that's already helping. Compile-time unit or a binary module that you'll load in run-time? I'm not sure what are the differences between compile-time unit and binary module. I suppose that the best for me will be to use binary module which will be loaded in run-time. Is there example of such modules? I think that the best way for communication between the modules will be to user mapping share memory. What can you advice me? Is it possible to find out which of allowed image formats any_image actually has? Hi: I'm writing some c++ code (using win32 api functions) and need to ensure that the boost::filesystem::path has a backslash on the end. For example the path: C:\test should beoutput as c:\test\ Does boost::filesystem have a method to ensure this is the case? Cheers Sean.

Boost.Python Compile Error(s) (GCC via MinGW-w64)

I wish to port it to compile under GCC via MinGW-w64 also, however I've hit a brick-wall with a slew of compile errors I'm getting when using Boost.Python in my project. I'm not quite sure who's "fault" this problem is... Mine? Boost? GCC? libstdc++? MinGW-w64? Something else? And everyone works might be difference. I my opinion, smart_ptr, regex, tr1 are something that should exists in standard C++ library, like many modern languages today. [Multi-Index] View contents of multi-index with debugger

Hi, I started using multi-index container, everything works fine, but I have hard time when debugging my code with Visual Studio 2005. The problem is I can't see the contents of the container when point my mouse to the container variable i.e I am seeing bunch of information that needs to be expanded, but can't see the actual elements in the container, for example like I can with std::vector. Is there some way to do this ? thanks

Suggestion to the packaging of boost libraries

Boost is useful but quite large. Is it a good idea to split the package, may be something like this: The frequently used libraries, such as: smart_ptr, regex, and all other TR1 are packaged as "boost". Other less frequently used, such as: wave, spirit, xpressive, etc.. are packaged as "boost++" or "boostx". Sorry for my poor English. I'm not a native English speaker. -_- Regards, Taworn T.

Hi, is it possible to have python have readonly access to class members that are non constant? typedef map<string,string> Links; class DataSet { Links links; } BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(_boosttest) { class_<Links>("Links") .def(map_indexing_suite<Links>()); class_<DataSet>("DataSet") .def_readonly("links",&DataSet::links); } Although DataSet.links is defined readonly I can change it from within python. Hi there, When compiling the example program "Timer.5 - Synchronising handlers in multithreaded programs" of boost asio 1_44 with MSVC 2008 professional on Window XP professional, I got 8 compiling errors, although the code executes without any problem. xpressive - delete weird character is a string

Hello, I have strings coming from a webpage (through a post form and fastcgi application) that contain "weird characters". In vim, those characters appears like ^@ in blue. Those weird characters were not there in the web form but are there in my fasctcgi application. I suspect they appear like that because of issues with charset but I am not sure. I would like to have a function to remove those weird characters from the strings and I would think that xpressive would be a good tool for that. When the weird characters are at the ends of the string, I trim using this function and the boost algo library void remove_non_graph(std::string& str) { using namespace boost; trim_if(str, !is_print()); return; } but this does not work when the weird character is inside the string or there are break lines. Is there an easy way to clean those strings with xpressive? Thank you Jean

Sparse Matrix Serialization

I'm interested in serializing some boost compressed row matrices. Based on this mailing list thread from 2008 http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/ublas/2008/08/2974.php it seemed that dense matrix support has been implemented so I had hoped that sparse matrix support was there as well. Dear Lubomir, This must be quite common (I have the same problem, wanting unscaled values, in astronomical images). It was quite a lot of work to implement all the types I needed (short, int, float, double) as unscaled types that properly convert (i.e. don't, 1234 -> 1234.0). I can share the code if you like, but I wrote it long ago when I was learning both gil and C++. Should this be easy? It would be really nice if gil supported unscaled types out of the box. [Build] First Boost build experience

I have been using Boost at work for quite a while, so I'm no stranger to Boost, or this list, and need no convincing about Boost's general high quality and utility. However, I've recently installed Boost on my home PC, and found the experience surprisingly difficult, and to be honest found that the "Getting Started" instructions are a wee bit poor. I'm installing on Fedora 13, 32 bit, on fairly old hardware, with Gnu C++ 4.5.1, which I've also just built from source for the first time, so maybe there's something I've missed from that process which is having some impact on my Boost experience. Here's a few observations... * First time round I figured that the right place to unpack the zip archive was to the place I ultimately wanted the include files to be (say /usr/local/include), because it's only when you get to the build binaries stuff that the whole copy/build thing is mentioned. Ok, so I should have read all the instructions first, but maybe this could be made clearer earlier. * Having come finally to step 5, the whole 'path/to/installation' thing appears, so I backtracked and put my zip expansion somewhere else. I'm keen to set this up so that I can support several boost versions, so am using the --prefix argument to bootstrap. I think I also need to supply this argument to bjam, at least it seemed to work that way. * That seemd to work ok, although there were some failures for things like MPI and zip, which are, I now realise, ok, but disconcerting. Maybe the instructions could say a few words about the log output expected. I know this is mentioned in the Custom Build stuff, but I'm following the easy idiot's guide. (Appropriate you may think, and you may very well be right!) * Then I came to link the example regex program... what is all that stuff about library naming? I didn't seem to have libraries with names like that at all, my regex libraries were libboost_regex.{a,so,so.1.45.0}, so I used that, and I still don't know what all the stage stuff is about - it seemed to work without it, but maybe there's something that's going to bite me. * Finally my link was failing with "`GLIBCXX_3.4.14' not found", which Googling seemed to suggest was because I need Fedora 14 libstdc++. So I installed that, and now it seems to work.. so far! Ok, so I got there, as I'm sure most people do, but it's not exactly a shrink-wrapped install experience, and a good deal harder than installing on Windoze. I wonder how many people are put off by this. Hmmm... reading that back it sounds like a lot of minor whinging, which is a shame 'cos I think Boost is 'triffic. Thx - Rob.

[interprocess] Unmap resource of the object constructed from managed_mapped_file

Hi, I have a managed_mapped_file and use it to dynamically construct lots of interprocess::vector<size_t> objects(all the objects and elements are resided in the mapped file). Now I'm looking for a way to keep the run-time memory consumption below a certain amount. Is it possible to unmap the resource of the vector object? Although all the resources would be freed when the managed_mapped_file is destroyed, but the cost of highly frequently mapping/un-mapping seems too expensive for my purpose. There is no reason for your snippet to fail. I have tested on openSUSE 11.3, 64 bits with gcc 4.5.0 and libboost_thread 1.42. Try to remove from the thread starter function the call to pthread_exit() and see if you still get the error.

[GIL] convert image view to const image view

I originally hoped that an actual function argument of type GIL mutable image view (e.g., gray8_view_t) would be automatically promoted to a (immutable or const) view (e.g., gray8c_view_t). But my experience (with version 1.44.0) indicates otherwise. It also seems like the const_view function, which generates a (const) view from an image is not overloaded to do the same using a mutable view. Obviously, I'm just getting starting using GIL, since this sort of conversion would, I presume, be used often. I've been searching the online documentation without success. Can someone point me to the answer for this basic task? In the meantime, I'll be reading the GIL header files. Thanks.

crash in boost serialization (1.44)

Hello, I’ve noticed a crash (accessing a null pointer) inside the boost serialization (version 1.44). I use visual studio 2005, the code to serialize is in a Dll. I have a small visual studio solution that reproduces the crash, I guess it is a bug and should cause a crash in other environments as well. I have the following classes INode (Interface) Node (Abstract, derived from INode) LeafNode(derived from Node) TableNode(derived from Node) The TableNode has a list of INode*, the children. A TableNode itself can be a child of a TableNode. All classes are inside a Dll and correctly exported (I have no “unregistered class” exceptions). If I create a TableNode with some entries including another TableNode and serialize it as an object, I get the crash when trying to deserialize later. If I do the same, but serialize the parent TableNode as a pointer, it works. I guess the serialization framework does not recognize that a TableNode gets serialized through a pointer and therefore the object tracking does not work correctly. I can send the example solution if needed. The crash is in the basic_iarchive.cpp, line 456 (bpis_ptr is null): if(! tracking){ bpis_ptr->load_object_ptr(ar, t, co.file_version); } Best regards, Rico

Hi guys, I have just started to use boost::serialization to serialize a complex data structure in a VS2005 MFC project. I'm still very unfamiliar with boost but i need to get this done by then end of the day. The headers in this static library: 1. include <boost/serialization/export.hpp> 2. include the definition of the derived class being serialized 3. declare a template function serialize() that takes a reference to the derived class being serialized in the boost::serialization namespace 4. invoke the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_KEY(<derivedclass>) macro at the global namespace scope The corresponding source files in this static library: 1. include the header 2. define the function template serialize() 3. explicitly instantiate the serialize() function with all the archives used: mpi::packed_iarchive and mpi::packed_oarchive in the boost::serialization namespace 4. invoke the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_IMPLEMENT(<derivedclass>) macro at the global namespace scope The main program links against this static library, and invokes a mpi function (broadcast) that serializes by the base pointer. The base class is polymorphic. All class derivations are public. The xml data is read by an external tool, that then tries to relate the errors to files and linenumbers. As you can see from the XML output above. No filename nor linenumber is listed, although something definately went wrong. A 'LastCheckPoint' tag would provide that information. Could I add a checkpoint in all my fixtures in order to 'inject' an initial checkpoint in each test ? Peter

boost::date_time: date & time in RFC 3339 format

Hello I'm trying to use boost::date_time to format the date and time (with fractional seconds) in RFC3339 format http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3339. I'd like my date to look like "1996-12-19T16:39:57.76-08:00". date +'%FT%T.%N%:z' gives me the format that I want 2010-12-17T17:09:41.079937078+01:00 The boost/C++ code at the end of this message gives me 2010-12-17T16:10:03.141889Z this is the correct time but I want the time in my time zone with an indication of the time zone (+0100) not in UTC with a "Z". Can anyone give me a hint? Hi there, I'm hoping someone can give me some hints on what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to create a library that uses regex and has no external dependencies. My understanding is that I need to compile boost to be static and link static at runtime. My project is multi-platform, but I'm currently working on OSX 10.6.5. To build boost, I'm using the following command: sudo ./bjam link=static threading=multi runtime-link=static architecture=combined address-model=32_64 macosx-version=10.5 macosx-version-min=10.5 install In Xcode, I've included the produced library, libboost_regex.a, in my Xcode project. I compile my dylib without errors or warning. However, I'm unable to load it. Checking the dependencies, my library seems to want the libboost_regex.dylib. serialization/fusion: non intrusive serialize() function templated on type being serialized

Hello, I have a base class and a large number of derived classes that are all adapted as fusion sequences. The intention is to serialize through the base pointer. struct Base; struct D_1 : public Base;struct D_2 : public Base;... All the D_i are adapted as fusion sequences. Besides, there is an mpl vector of all the D_i called DVECTOR. The base_object part of serialize() is the same for all D_i The D_i specific part of serialize(), I have the ability to generate with fusion meta functions. [Interprocess] Strange behaviour on erase in a b::i::vector of b::i::weak_ptr

Hello Ion and others, I currently work with b::i::vectors storing b::i::managed_weak_ptr on objects created in a fixed_managed_shared_memory. I add shared_ptr whith push_back, but when I want to remove a weak_ptr using erase, the last item is erase instead of the one I want to remove. In the sample code below I add 3 objects and try to remove the middle one in both a vector of shared_ptr and a vector of weak_ptr : interprocessWeakVectorTest.cc http://pastebin.com/yDCngGw4 The result is the expected one for vector of shared_ptr, but not for a vector of weak_ptr : foo_shared_vector: 1 3 foo_weak_vector: 1 2 A tried the same with std::vectors of boost::shared_ptr and boost::weak_ptr (sample code below) : weakVectorTest.cc http://pastebin.com/fMEi0iaA The result is the expected one for both : foo_shared_vector: 1 3 foo_weak_vector: 1 3 I don't understand the behaviour of erase on b::i::vector of b::i::weak_ptr. Hi all, I try to use xsi (SysV) shared memory of boost::interprocess library, but I haven't found a way to use it through managed_shared_memory interface. Is the code in interprocess/detail/xsi_shared_memory.hpp and interprocess/detail/xsi_shared_memory_device.hpp deprecated? There's also some class declaration "managed_xsi_shared_memory" in interprocess/interprocess_fwd.hpp but I haven't found an implementation. Is this supposed to work somehow? Or can I only use it as-is? If yes, why is this then only available in detail namespace? Am I doing something wrong? Kind regards, Chris

Handling mulitiple boost versions

As I'm sure is common I write code that builds under several versions of Boost which often results in code like... #if (BOOST_VERSION < 103400) do this #else do that #endif This is specifically true for changes to Boost.Filesystem, but also in other places. Usually the difference being addressed is obvious, but not always, and in any case direct use of "103400" seems to be like a magic number to me. So, I'd like to do something like this in a global header (in one place for many versions and capabilities) #if (BOOST_VERSION < 103400) #define BOOST_PRE_FILESYSTEM_RATIONALISATION #endif and then say #ifdef BOOST_PRE_FILESYSTEM_RATIONALISATION do this #else do that #endif Is this unwise for any reason I'm not seeing, and are the tokens I'm defining already defined somewhere, so I can use those instead? Hi, I have two (or more) default (or user defined) system units. For certain operations I assume that one quantity in one system can be converted into another quantity in some other system with the same dimension. What conversions are allowed depend on the included headers at best. What is the best way to check at compile time that one quantity can be converted into another? For example, I have this function that sums two quantities with the same dimension and returns the result of the left term. The function assumes that qright is convertible to qleft. A couple of times I've run into the situation where a "new" C++ class is written to exactly match "legacy" C structures. At the edges where old code meets new code, you can cast one to the other in-place. For example, given a huge mess of data that includes oldstruct s1; you could write the line newclass& s2= reinterpret_cast<newclass&>(s1); because s2 is designed to exactly overlay s1. It might even derive from it, and just add member functions and friendlier accessors. Another example I've seen is a class that contains nothing but a char* pointer member, that contains overloaded operators to replace the ancient str* functions. In particular, it has an operator==, so casting an array of char* to an array of that class allowed std::find to be used! I don't like the wild and unchecked use of reinterpret_cast, but I can see the point for these and think the idiom can be tamed. Basically, I want to write a cisam_cast that behaves like a reinterpret_cast but only for those conversions I've explicitly nominated as being cisam's. CISAM is "compatible in structure and meaning", and I avoid calling it "upgrade" because it works in either direction or sideways between different code bases' definitions of the same wire data. I'm thinking that I should be able to declare something like template<> cisam<xxx,yyy> : std::tr1::true_type {}; to enable cisam_cast<xxx>(a_yyy) to have the same meaning as reinterpret_cast<xxx&>(a_yyy), etc. (foreshadowing hard question...) Since it would be common to make a new class to wrap a primitive type or old struct, a shortcut would be to include a typedef yyy cisam; as a member of xxx. Now I get around to my actual question: the "etc." part above. Given that xxx and yyy are cisam-mates, I want to enable not only xxx to yyy and vice versa, but handle const and volatile qualified forms with correct cv-modifier carry-through, and handle pointers to them to any depth, which is complicated by the fact that there could be cv-qualifiers at any level. In the earlier example, the original code was something like: char* A[7]; char* val; //... Str* SA= reinterpret_cast<Str*>((char**)A); and I would want Str* SA= cisam_cast<Str*>(A); to be accepted. Note that the cisam-ness is between (char*) and (Str), so there are a different number of stars on the before and the after. So, how might I write the cisam_cast machinery to elaborate the basic cisam definitions into the full set of allowed casts? Variant pointer and bool

Hi all, I have a class, call it "Property", containing a value, which can be of many different types, like int, string, bool, but also a pointer to binary data. So I decided to use boost::variant. The problem is that when I assign a pointer to the variant, it is implicitly casted to a bool. So I do not get the pointer out of the variant again. Is boost::variant not suitable for my needs or is there a recommended workaround? file creation/append mapping/unmapping

Hi all - I'm aware of two separate mechanisms for mapping files in boost: file_mapping combined with mapped_region from interprocess, and mapped_file from iostreams. I need to write a portable library (linux, windows, mac, 32/64 bit) which performs mappings of files. I will be creating flatfile archives consisting of many pieces of data, and this data may be operated on in a multi-threaded fashion. I was thinking of a mechanism where I'd atomically "allocate" space in a file, map that allocated region, and then memcpy the data into the region. I do not know the size of the completed file in advance. I also may be creating files > 4 GB in rare cases, and I still need this to work on 32-bit systems. I also need to be able to read (again multi-threaded) sections from one of these archives, and I need to be able to map and unmap these regions of the file. In 64-bit land, I might keep all mappings open during a process lifetime, and only close the mappings when the process shuts down, allowing the filesystem/file cache to swap out as necessary, but in 32-bit land, address space may be constrained, and I will require the map/unmap potentially many times during a process lifetime. Recommendations for which way to go on this? It seems from my little tests and reading of the existing docs that the interprocess stuff may fit the bill better than the stuff from iostreams. Also, I hope to pack my "sections" together, and not necessarily at page-aligned boundaries. I know this may incur extra state management on my part. I also found a class called managed_file_mapping. Can this help me at all? I couldn't find any example code using this class. Thanks, Brian

Hello, I'm currently porting a part of code to a "smaller" version of windows which runs on a real time os. The Os provides most of the windows 32 API functions but only in the "A" variant ( using only standard characters). I got everything compiled fine up to the linker step, where the linker doesn't find the wide string versions of the API calls. Hello all, we want to use iround / llround without exception handling. This is possible with the 'user_error' option and override a 'user_rounding_error' function. We want to return numeric_limits<int>::max() or numeric_limits<__int64>::max() if the rounding overflows over the maximum integer domain. This is then problematic since the 'user_rounding_error' has a template argument only for its source type (e.g. float / double), but not for its target type (i.e. int / __int64). We can ofc do the check before calling iround / llround, but this check would then executed be twice for the normal non overflow case. Anyone idea?

Hello, I have built boost v1.45 using Intel compiler 11.1: $ bjam toolset=intel --with-mpi --with-thread --with-serialization \ --prefix=$HOME/local variant=release link=static install Then using the same intel compiler I use the static boost libraries from above to compile a code which uses boost.mpi and boost.serialization explicitly. My code depends on a 3rd party dynamic library which 'requires': libboost_thread-gcc41-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 libboost_signals-gcc41-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 Should I be concerned about conflicting compilers ? In general if I've built the boost libraries (thread, mpi, ...) using Intel toolset, will it peacefully work with system's standard C/C++ libraries build by GCC? thanks in advance,

Hi, I need to connect to a server via SSL. The only thing I have is an P12 container, but I can not find any hint in the Boost::Asio examples and documentation on how to use it. Is it possible to use a P12 with Boost::Asio, as described in here with PEM: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_45_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/ssl/client… Or can I use some kind of bytestream and just hardcode it for now, e.g. create a bytearray, put the content of the P12 in there and use it with Bosst::Asio? serialization: pointers to base classes

Hello, I am unclear about registration and export. I have this public single-derivation hierarchy B | \ \ D1 D2 D3 | D11 The 5 structs are non abstract. I will want to serialize (save) const B* and load it back with the serialization lib constructing for me (on the heap) the right object. Did I understand right that the library does this for me? Does it construct the object on the heap? I export the 5 structs with the macro BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID(ns::B, "B") at global namespace level. Hi all -- I'm getting a strange warning from <boost/functional/hash/detail/hash_float_generic.hpp>. What's strange is not the warning, but the circumstances: if I use the boost headers installed in /usr/include, no warning. But if I make a copy of /usr/include/boost and tell the compiler to use the copy, I get a warning. I can reproduce this on CentOS 5 using our custom build of GCC 4.4.4 and boost 1.44.0, and on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) using Ubuntu's builds of GCC 4.4.3 and boost 1.40.0. Range - Char literal question

Hi, I need to iterate thru strings (For various reasons, I can't use string or vector<char> containers). I found that boost::range exactly fits the bill for me. I get all the convenience of an iterator (from as_literal.hpp). I have a piece of code char* char_s = "I am fine"; char *cp; std::size_t sz = strlen(char_s); const char* str_end1 = str_begin( char_s ) + sz; for (cp = str_begin(char_s); cp != str_end(char_s); ++cp) cout << *cp; I have couple of questions: 1. In the loop, boost::range seems to be calling strlen every iteration. This is an overhead. I was wondering if there's a way I can pass in the length myself so that boost::range would use it and avoid calling strlen(). 2. If it's not possible, is there a way for me to use iterators (boost or non-boost) over char strings? Hi All, I have come across a bug associated the following code, it work fine in VS2008 release mode and crash in debug mode, I did some research found it should be a bug in the microsoft implementation of ostringstream, Is anybody know how to fix this or alternative way? [Fusion] Runtime complexity of boost::fusion::find?

Hi everyone On the following documentation page: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_45_0/libs/fusion/doc/html/fusion/algorithm/… It mentions that the computational complexity for "find" is linear. However, I can not understand how this is the case. As far as I understand all find needs to do is to look through types, simply iterating through the sequence types at compile time using result_of::next<X>::type where where X is initially result_of::begin<SEQ>::type. So I can't see how any actual work is done by find. Am I missing something here? I'm working on a parameter library, and I assumed things like "find" used constant or no time to execute. Could people please explain how find could use linear time? Thanks Clinton

The code that sends with mpi::broadcast receives a base class reference (or pointer). The code that receives with mpi::broadcast doesn't know what it is receiving. Apparently, boost::serialization can deal with base pointers fine, and I think it creates on the heap the loaded objects, or? The solution w variant works here, I am trying to simplify. thanks,
