Hi, consider the following simple example struct aligned_type { __declspec(align(16)) float vals[4]; }; BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT((boost::is_convertible<aligned_type , aligned_type >::value)); It fails on MSVC 9.0 with boost 1.43 with the following error type_traits/is_convertible.hpp(254) : error C2719: 'unnamed-parameter': formal parameter with __declspec(align('16')) won't be aligned References won't help either BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT((boost::is_convertible<aligned_type &, aligned_type &>::value)); as it breaks with a similar error type_traits/is_convertible.hpp(263) : error C2718: 'const vec_aligned': actual parameter with __declspec(align('16')) won't be aligned A bug database search did not bring up any relevant matches, so I wonder if that is a new issue or just by design? [Proto] Returns double

Dear all, I am working in an application where I use Proto to evaluate an expression template like _1 >> f >> g to g(f(x)) once x is assigned to _1. (Please note that f and g are not necessarily functions -- they might be function objects too.) I am interested in putting a compile-time sanity check to ensure that the functions/function objects f and g do indeed return a double (or something convertible to it). [asio] io_service hang on stop

Hi, I designed a library to start a io_service background thread when the first object is created (these objects use serial_port) and to terminate it when the last object is destroyed. This is the io_worker_thread: void io_worker_thread(void) { io_service.reset(); io_service.run(); p_work.reset(); io_service.stop(); thread_started = false; }; All seems to work, when the last object is destroyed the io_service.run() returns...but the calling application hang! [asio] Problem implementing a line-based protocol

I am trying to write a server and client that use a line-based text protocol for communication. It works rather well now, but there is some weird problem: One of my messages loses the first 4 characters. (reproducible, but I don't do anything special in that one case, I think) boost::asio::async_read_until is used to read the line into a boost::asio::streambuf the socket is a boost::asio::local::stream_ protocol::socket std::string msg; std::istream is(&buffer); std::getline(is, msg); I looked at the buffer.size(), the size reported to the handler function and compared it to the length of the message, which looks consistant, so I don't assume that the read call read some characters over the \n. (but that would be the only logical explanation) * there are no multiple read operations on the socket * I reuse the same buffer for multiple async_read_until calls Does anyone have a code snippet that can help me figure out what could be stuck and lost in the buffer, or where else the problem could be?

TTI library in the Boost sandbox

I have uploaded to the Boost sandbox 'tti' directory version 1.0 of the TTI library. The TTI library, which is an abbreviation for the Type Traits Introspection library, allows a programmer to introspect at compile time the inner elements of a C++ type. The introspection process depends on specifying the name of the inner element by different macros for different types of elements, and then using a generated metafunction to determine whether that element exists within the enclosing type. The inner elements which can be introspected are type, class template, member data, member function, static member data, and static member function. The TTI library is based on the type_traits_ext portion of the Concept Traits Library, with improvements and additions, and also lifts functionality, for the purposes of orthogonality, from Boost.MPL regarding introspection of types and templates. The purpose of the library is to provide a consistent set of interfaces for doing compile-time introspection which other template metaprogrammers can use in their code. There is a readme.txt in the top-level sandbox tti directory, for anyone browsing the sandbox for interesting libraries, which replicates what is written here. There is a build.txt file in the doc subdirectory for building the documentation and running the tests. The documentation is also included as part of the sandbox files for those who can not build the docs. There is a list of todo items in the sandbox on which I will be working for the next release, but the library is already feature rich. The library has been tested and works with gcc 4.30, 4.4.0, 4.5.0-1, 4.5.2, and VC++ 8.0, 9.0, and 10.0. It may also work with other compilers. There is a bug in versions of gcc prior to version 4 for which I will attempt to find a workaround if it is deemed important, which prevents it from working with the library. Questions, comments, suggestions, and bug reports are all welcome.

[Proto] Difficult Arity Check

Dear all, I have a syntax like ((_1 >> &f1 >> &f2) || (_2 >> &f3) || (_3 >> &f4 >> &f5 >> &f6)) >> g for which I already have a small grammar which along with my context do their job fine. The above expression is to act like g(f2(f1(x)), f3(y), f6(f5(f4(z)))) once invoked with _1 == x, _2 == y, and _3 == z. I am currently trying to add a safety layer on top of that which can emit a compile-error -- at the appropriate corner of my code -- that can prevent pass of functions with wrong arities. For example, g above needs to be a ternary. Although my context will notice it if g is not a ternary and produce a meaningful error message, that's too late. My poor user needs to be informed right at the instantiation time. So, I thought I'm going to use transforms to get my grammar manage that. To that end, I thought the _state of my grammar needs to be an MPL pair of an mpl::int_ and an mpl::bool_. Below is my algorithm with some plain English explanation. Please would someone help me for I found it utterly formulate that in Proto. 1) when<terminal<_>, mpl::pair<mpl::int_<1>, mpl::true_> > -- so far, so easy. 2) When logical_or<Arity, Arity>, return summation of the two arities, paired with the logical and of success value in the two branches: mpl::pair < mpl::plus < typename _state(EmtnArity(_left))::first, typename _state(EmtnArity(_right))::first >, mpl::and_ < typename _state(EmtnArity(_left))::second, typename _state(EmtnArity(_right))::second > > (This doesn't compile.) 3) When shift_right<Arity, Arity>, return mpl::int_<1> again, but, this time, paired with whether or not the right arity has been passed around logically anded with the success value so far: mpl::pair < mpl::int_<1>, mpl::and_ < typename _state(EmtnArity(_left))::second, is_callable_with_args(***) > > And, I'm totally stuck in the use of is_callable_with_args! Splitting Tiff RGBA into RGB and alpha data ...

Hi there I have an uncompressed RGBA Tiff file (RGB + alpha channel) which I'm trying to split into two data files, one containing the RGB data, and the other containing the alpha (transparency) data. Hi, Boost Users. Does anybody know why functional objects created by means of boost::bind have no move constructors. It would be rather useful especially when such functional objects consist of some smart pointers (like boost::shared_ptr). For example, move constructor of boost::shared_ptr is very light (comparing to its copy constructor) - it doesn't use any CAS at all. May be someone know the reason of move constructor absence or maybe someone know any plans of implementing it. Abrarov Marat.

In daemon A I want to call a C++ function from daemon B and pass some arguments for execution. The function in daemon B must execute the arguments and return the result to daemon A. [version] boost version check, header (.hpp) vs binaries (libs)

Hi, I work in at least 3 computers (home/work/cluster, in which the cluster is really a shared filesystem between different architectures, etc). Besides that, for some projects I use the default version of boost in that system and in others a locally (user space) installed boost (that is, ranging from boost 1.33 to boost 1.46svn). Therefore is not uncommon that I mess the compilation lines and end up including headers from a certain version an linking to a different one. Hopefully this fails at link time: e.g. undefined reference to `boost::filesystem3::path::extension() const' but it is confusing and potentially it could compile (and then crash unexpectedly) I am aware of 'boost/version.hpp' but this is only for header verification. The question is, is there a Boost mechanism to verify that the header and the library in boost are consistent? (Hopefully at compile/link time) Thank you, Alfredo

ASIO: What is the proper way to upload a LARGE file?

I noticed that contrary to other libraries, every boost installation seems to be specific for: - The Boost version (duh!) - The MSVC Version For instance: libboost_system-vc80-mt-1_43.lib I would prefer to have all the -vc80- and -vc100- library files in the same folder, but perhaps I am looking for trouble? Then there is the issue of the includes. If such strategy turns out to be ill-advised, I would like to somehow "hide" my MSVS-2010 (don't want to uninstall it!) and then install Boost, built bye the VS-2005 toolchain. Hi, I was building my project until recently with Boost 1.42. I have upgraded my Boost Version to 1.45. First of all, I see that now by default is used the dynamic linking to the Boost/Serialization. How can I set my code/project to link it statically to the Boost/Serialization? Second, I can not open my old files, I used only binary archives. I read about fix_six, but when I run it with my files I got the message "library version not equal to six"? How is this possible? How can I found out what "library version " do I have? Boost 1.42 TR1 With GCC 4.5 selects wrong overload

I am using the portable style boost headers for tr1 implementation from Boost 1.42 such as #include <boost/tr1/type_traits.hpp> When i use gcc implementation of tr1 (Mingw GCC 4.5.1 from TDM, BOOST_HAS_GCC_TR1 defined) everything works fine. However when i select boost tr1 implementation (i.e not define the above macro) some stdlib functions such as std::abs gets wrong overloaded selected. For. e.g. in gcc/tr1 std::abs((signed char)5) returns an int while in boost/tr1 it returns a double. Boost 1.45 Serialization : Getting archive exception while loading

Hi, I have changed the sample code given in the Boost site for Serialization and the saving of the file works fine. The code works fine without the switch case as it executes save and load in the same session. I can save and load in the same session. If I close the application and open the application again and try to load the saved(serialized) file, it is throwing an Archive Exception. I am trying this for a game that I am working on so as to save and load in different sessions. Is there a reason for not finishing the implementation of XSI (System V) shared memory? It seems like most of the work is already done. If there is no reason not to, I might be able to finish the implementation so that it can be included in the next release. I know that POSIX may be sufficient for some, but System V allows for much better control using SELinux since it lives in kernel space. memory leak when using shared_from_this

hi there, I'm having trouble understanding the cause of a memory leak apparently caused by using 'shared_from_this'. The following is the case: I have a AbstractProperty class with XMLNode as subclass. there exist two typedefs for these classes, namely typedef shared_ptr< XMLNode > XMLNodePtr and similar for AbstractProperty. in the XMLNode class I have the member function 'addChild' that adds a child to the XMLNode instance. I keep a reference to the parent by calling chid->setParent(), *with a shared pointer to this*. This results in a (quite severe) memory leak. I can resolve the problem by using a shared_ptr with a null-deleter ( see f.e. http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2008/05/36281.php ), but I don't quite understand *why* the leak occurs, as I understand it so that the shared_from_this is a weak_ptr to this. Linking Error on WaitForSingleObject

Hello All, I have a very unusual linking issue. It might be trivial but I could not find any reference after searching on the mailing list and other forums. I wrote a very simple example code (attached at the end of message) for using boost lock and mutex. The same piece of code compiles fine without linking error in one Visual Studio Project and gives the following linking error in another Visual Studio Project. I have made sure that the VS settings for each project match exactly. ERROR: error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol __imp__WaitForSingleObject__USE_VCR_MODE@8 referenced in function "public: void __thiscall boost::detail::basic_timed_mutex::lock(void)" (?lock@basic_timed_mutex@detail@boost@@QAEXXZ) I am using Visual Studio 2010 and boost 1_45_0. The code is linking to libboost_thread-vc100-mt-s-1_45.lib in both the projects. Any suggestions on what could be the possible cause of this or how to fix this will be highly appreciated. Boost Graph Library: edge retrieval using edge descriptor between square brackets fails

Hi all, I am wrapping the Boost Graph Library with a thin class, and I am having a problem in retrieving the edge. I use a mechanism similar to the one in here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3100146/adding-custom-vertices-to-a-boos… For testing, I add two vertices (suppose pNode1 and pNode2) successfully, and they can be retrieved as well by passing in their vertex descriptors. However, this is not the case for the edges: when I add an edge from pNode1 to pNode2, the edge is correctly stored as the out_edge of pNode1, but when I retrieve the edge using its edge descriptor, which is the (valid) return value of the add_edge() function, the pointer value is NULL. Also, when I debug the code, I find that inside the graph, there are two variables m_edges and m_vertices. The m_vertices correctly contains two vertex descriptors, but the m_edges is empty. So, do I make a mistake here? I have been looking for some information in Boost's archive and other sources (StackOverflow, ...), but so far haven't found anything helpful. I include a snippet at the end of this e-mail. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 on Windows Vista SP2, and Boost 1.44.0 (haven't upgraded yet to 1.45, but the latter doesn't seem to address this issue). Thank you! [proto] learning proto slowly, a small (math)complex library

Hi, I find proto pretty intriguing and I can see the power in it but I am still not able to create a context in which it can help in my design. I also find the Boost.Proto examples very confusing and not usually in the context I always imagine to use the library. There are several concepts that I don't yet fully understand like "context" and "grammars". Also besides the power I see in the library sometimes the resulting syntax in the examples is pretty disappointing, with all those "eval" functions. In general I can't see whether this is a result of limitations of the library or a tool to make the examples more pedagogical. If someone is kind enough to follow me and help me during this discovery of the library along these posts I will continue. The idea of this post is try to bring a simple example of boost at a context that I am able to understand. In order to be useful for many other people I will try to bring proto to a purely mathematical level. Suppose I want to build a new (kind of mathematical) library. Typically I would start defining a lots of arithmetical objects and members and friends operators, all of them eager (member)functions, lots of operators (many bugs also), also use boost.operators (to make less bugs) and then realise that the library has not any real deep mathematical structure on it, not to the compile-time/programmer level. Yes, the program will be able to do a lot of mathematics at runtime via numerical representations but there will be no insight from the point of view of the program code or the "type system". Let's start by an example, I define a complex type, after a lot of work I would have made the equivalent of std::complex<T>. Then the program replaces T by double and the program can (at runtime) do some "math". The problem is that I as a programmer can not do any math with that type. Let me give a concrete example, the complex_unit_circle is a set of complex numbers with modulus =1. One is tempted to implement complex_unit_circle in terms of the "complex type" or some parameterisation (angle). >From a mathematical point of view the complex z is a complex number of course, and z/|z| (z/abs(z)) is not only also a complex number but also potentially a complex_unit_circle element with very spefic properties. For example the product of two elements of the unit circle can be interpreted as a unit circle element again. The only way to express this potentiality at compile time is by expression templates, i.e. in its most glorious state by Boost.Proto. z/abs(z) is really an expression that eventually can be used to construct either another complex number (as type) or a unit circle number (as type). But lets start slower than that, lets build an expression that can be used (potentially) to build a complex number instead. The concrete question of this post will be how to obtain the desired syntax by adding layers to the original posted code. Note that I didn't define any so called "grammar" or "context" yet. Since the first concern is to be able to use the new code with old code at all intermediate steps in the development, duppose I want to use this kind of expression to construct (in the c++ sense) an existing type, namely std::complex<double>. i.e. I want to be able to write: std::complex<double> z = 4. + 5.*i; or std::complex<double> z(4. + 5.*i); (forget about alternative notations, like 5.*i + 4. or 4. + i*5) The only ways I see this is possible is by adding either a constructor to std::complex<double> or a cast operator of the "expression of type 4.+5.*i" to std::complex<double>. The question for this post, 1) is this true? 2) if yes, then that means that one of the 2 types (type complex or typeof(4.+5.*i) ), will have to be modified (or extendended) in other to accept this syntax. 3) if no , how can I allow this syntax? 4) if the std::complex type is not modifiable, what is the mechanism in proto to define a cast over a certain set of expressions, e.g. of the type of 4.+5.*i. 5) if not, is this syntax not possible at all? is it here where we need to introduce those "eval" functions such as std::complex<double> z = eval_as_complex(4. + 5.*i). The idea is that once I resolve this general questions about the library I will continue building up. (And excuse me for these naive questions along the way). (Note: I know that std::complex<double> had constructor std::complex<double>(4.,5.) and that should be the preferred use, but this post is all about "syntax" and how to use proto, these are just examples). issues with the latest boost numeric bindings

I do not know if this the correct format but here are the issues that I am running into: /boost/numeric/bindings/lapack/detail/ The file clapack.h includes itself causing an error /boost/numeric/bindings/blas/detail/ The file cblas.h includes itself causing an error I changed them to lapack.h and blas.h respectively but I got several errors. I checked out the latest version of numeric bindings from boost.svn this morning. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 without a Fortran compiler (I need to use clapack) The issues here are that the l lapack routines come with 2 underscores, i.e. _sgesvd_ instead of sgesvd_ I declared BOOST_NUMERIC_BINDINGS_USE_CLAPACK in my driver. I have Boost installed as part of my Fedora13/64-bit system, at Boost 1.41. I now want install Boost 1.45, but need to keep the original around for backwards compatibility issues, so I'm putting my 1.45 build somewhere else, and and I want it look as much like the original 1.41 build as possible, but be 1.45. [Iterator] advance and random_access_traversal iterators

What happened to the patch to add a boost::advance function designed to work with Boost.Iterator's concepts? Three years ago there was a thread pointing out the problem with std::advance not treating random access traversal iterators as random access (because of the reference type). Sebastian Redl posted a patch to add a boost::advance (and boost::distance) function. <http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/09/127785.php> I don't see any proof of this patch ever being applied. Hello, I've got 2 mpl::map's, both have less than 20 elements. I copy one to another, and the result has more than 20 elements. I thought that BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_MAP_SIZE macro affects only explicit definitions of maps, not result values of metafunctions, but it turns out that the above case doesn't compile -- until I #include <boost/mpl/map/map30.hpp> Is it behavior "by design", or is it a bug? [Proto] Storing an Expression Template as a Data Member

Dear all, Is there any way I can have classes with data members of type (proto) expression templates? Here is where I get stuck: template<typename T> class MyClass { ... T expression_; }; What type should T be? If you're wondering why on earth I might need that, here is an explanation: Instances of MyClass need to store the lazy calculation they will be performing later on when enough initialisation data is available. Each instance of MyClass has its own FORMULATION for the lazy calculation in terms of the initialisation data. They need to be fed with these formulations and I thought (proto) expression templates will perhaps do the job. Hi All, I am trying to use boost::tokenizer to tokenize a string containing embedded '\0' characters. I am using boost::char_separator to specify the separator. I am not getting correct tokens when I am using '\0' as the separator. Here I am curious to know, if it is indeed possible to use '\0' as separator in boost::char_separator class. I am pretty much using the code in the example given on below link. The Boost.Signals2 documentation at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_45_0/doc/html/signals2/thread-safety.html says: "Suppose a user writes a slot which connects another slot to the invoking signal. Will the newly connected slot be run during the same signal invocation in which the new connection was made? The answer is no." I'm trying to find out what Boost.Signals has to say about it. A quick test program shows that Boost.Signals does call the newly connected slot. I'm not sure though if this is undefined behavior as connecting another slot might invalidate the iterators used by the combiner? Boris

How to get bug reports addressed

I'm responsible for maintaining the local Boost install for a large group of developers, and I find myself spending an inordinate amount of time reapplying our local patches for Boost bugs every time a new version comes out, seemingly with no end in sight. One obvious example is https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/3645: the report is clear and specific, documents a real bug, and provides a trivial patch which completely resolves the issue. It's everything one could possibly want in a bug report, and it has been utterly ignored for over a year. In my experience this has been the rule rather than the exception; other examples that I've been personally acquainted with include http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2009/06/153214.php, https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/4918, and https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/4919. In every case the reporters have done everything they could to provide a useful bug report, up to and including providing patches, but have been met with profound silence. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get action in these situations?

[DateTime] Daily Schedules

I was looking at the DateTime library for a scheduling module in my application. I was very excited to see time periods (time_period) and its method contains(). I could set up a time_period for say 8:00-17:00, and then when something happened I could create a ptime and see if the time_period contains my ptime. (i.e. did my action happen between 8:00 and 17:00.) However, I realized that a time period is much more specific than I want. A time_period is tied to a specific date, i.e. 8:00-17:00 on Sep. 20 1999. I read the documentation, and I didn't see (or missed) anything that might be what I would call an hour period -- a range of time that is independent of the date. I don't think it's a duration, because I understood that to mean the amount of time between two time points (i.e. +/- 5 hours). I have some ideas on how I might extend this to achieve what I want, but before going that route, I wanted to double check if others have encountered this and if so how they resolved it. Was it done with a bit of the library that I'm overlooking? Or did you have to extend the class to achieve the desired results? Thanks in advance, -=John

[Off topic] Strict Aliasing white paper redux

I wrote it because people keep posting, on this and on other lists, questions that show a basic misunderstanding of aliasing and what the rules in C and C++ standards on aliasing are intended to communicate. I'm hoping that people on this list will review the paper and tell me some more ways of improving it. Dear all, I am considering using Boost Accumulators for a moving window calculation. When a window would step from left to right, it should add the sample on the right side of the window and retract the sample on the left side on each step. For weighted accumulators, it might be possible to use negative weights. But, since the accumulators do not appear to be intended for this use, there may be implementation details that invalidate the use of negative weights. Is there a recommended way to retract samples in Boost Accumulators? boost::signals2 connection management

Hi, all If I have one only signal that can be connected at different times to several different slots, then I create several boost::signals2::connection, one for each slot but for that same only signal, if I disconnect one of the connections, will all connections be disconnected or just that particular slot? If this is not the way to disconnect specific individual signal/slot connections, how do I do it? I have to use "boost::bind" for the connections are from signals and slots of different classes, and I cannot use scoped connections because asynchronous tasks are being performed (and signaled). [ asio ] how to determine if a server is overloaded ?

I am experimenting with boost asio & serialisation. and have created a test server based on the corresponding example in the asio tutorial. This is a simple single threaded server. The stress testing I have done, shows I get different results on different platforms. This is expected. However I need a way of determining when the server can not cope with the load. This allows me to inform the user. Currently I have used typical requests to stress test the server. This shows the server handles ~1000 requests/sec in debug under ideal conditions, on localhost. Does this means that if I continue to receive 1000/request sec over a several sec/minutes, then the server must be overloaded. Is this the right way of thinking about the problem or am I "barking up the wrong tree". Can any one provide any insights about how one goes about determining when a asio server is overloaded ? Hi, Boost 1.42.0 documentation of transfrom_iterator says: "If Reference is use_default then the reference member of transform_iterator is result_of<UnaryFunction(iterator_traits<Iterator>::reference)>::type. Otherwise, reference is Reference." But it is simply implemented as UnaryFunction::result_type; This discrepancy between documentation and implementation plays a role when I want to use transform_iterator with boost::mem_fn to access member variable of structure. mem_fn's operator() is overridden to provide both const and non-const access to member variable. The discrepancy leads to compilation error for non-const access.

Problems in CodeGear

Hello. I'm unable to compile boost in Embarcadero 2010 (CodeGear) version 0x621. My code is really simple: #include "boost/random/mersenne_twister.hpp" This produces this error: [BCC32 Error] mersenne_twister.hpp(63): E2299 Cannot generate template specialization from 'detail::disable_constructor<Engine,T>' in the line: BOOST_RANDOM_DETAIL_GENERATOR_CONSTRUCTOR(mersenne_twister, Generator, gen) { seed(gen); } I have preprocessed my .cpp in order to see if boost gets correctly self configured for CodeGear compiler. It does very well, because it enters into codegear.hpp. But the last checked version of the CodeGear compiler is 0x620, and my version is 0x621. I have tried to change this line: // versions check: // last known and checked version is 0x620 #if (__CODEGEARC__ > 0x621) and this one: // CodeGear C++ Builder 2010 #if (__CODEGEARC__ <= 0x621) / # define BOOST_NO_TYPENAME_WITH_CTOR // Cannot use typename keyword when making temporaries of a dependant type etc... so that the compiler ignores or enters those sections, but nothing changes. It seems slightly strange to me that version 0x620 and 0x621 are SO different that boost is unable to get compiled. This problem has raised when trying to compile my application with libLAS library, which uses guid.hpp (which uses mersenne_twister.hpp), and there are much more compiler errors than the one I am explaining here. I guess (and hope) they are part of the same problem. No problems arise with other boost modules like, for example, "boost/smart_ptr.hpp". Help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, I'm having some trouble using boost::iostreams::basic_file (and other devices) with unsigned char character types. Local_date_time constructor question

Documentation for local_date_time constructor local_date_time(...) Parameters: date time_duration time_zone_ptr bool states that the last parameter, "The DST flag", "must be passed to indicate whether the time is in daylight savings or not." My question is: Isn't the combination of the first parameter, "date" and third parameter, "time_zone_ptr" determine if the resulted local_date_time will be either in the daylight saving time period or not?

filtering stream fpos

Hi, is there something like fpos for boost's filtering streams? If so, I must have overlooked it in the docs. Or, if this fpos-thing does not work out: I would like to remember the position where I left a (potentially gzipped) file and resume work (reading only) on that file in subsequent function calls. Moving my Boost installation

I have Boost installed under Fedora13 in /usr/include, not installed by me, but I imagine done as part of installing Fedora. I have a codebase that uses Boost and builds perfectly, using gcc 4.5.1 Now, if I move my Boost installation mv /usr/include/boost ~rgj/xx and add an appropriate include directive to my compile lines, I get compile errors from Boost headers /home/rgj/xx/boost/date_time/gregorian/conversion.hpp: In function ‘tm boost::gregorian::to_tm(const boost::gregorian::date&)’: /home/rgj/xx/boost/date_time/gregorian/conversion.hpp|44 col 23| error: missing initializer for member ‘tm::tm_sec’ etc, etc Obviously I'm having a minor aberration here...what am I doing wrong? Jim, The build worked! It's the first successful MinGW64 build that I have had. This build was performed from within Cygwin using the mingw64 toolset. I am attempting a build with the MinGW build you pointed me to. Thank again! However, when I attempt to compile the archive into my library I get the below error. Therefore, learning how to demystify Proto error messages is of much importance to me and I'm ready to pay the porting price if that's what it takes. :D But, seriously, have you ever thought of including a section or two on how to do that in the Proto documentation? The other (sort of related) thing is that it's come to my attention that Fusion knowledge comes very handy in Proto development. [Proto] callable_context

Dear all, I am trying to use callable_contexts to evaluate expressions like: x >> f >> g >> h; where this would be equivalent to h(g(f(x))). I have derived my context from callable_context, and thought I have overloaded for relevant tags (terminal and shift_right). GCC 4.5.1 (MinGW32, WinXP, SP3) stops with an error message which is cryptic to my current level of knowledge about Proto. I guess that's because I haven't done the job correctely. To accomplish this we have attempted to build using MinGW64. Unfortunately, I have had zero luck getting boost-threads to build. I can build the 32-bit address model without a problem but 64-bit continues to elude me. I first tried Boost 1.35.0 and have now moved on to 1.45.0. I believe that the environment is set up correctly (see below). Improving extern template usage

Hi, I've been playing around with the extern template implementation of Visual C++ (2005 and 2010) to reduce our overly long build times. Microsoft's implementation does only omit implicit definitions for member functions not defined inline in the class body. This makes the feature rather useless to reduce build times, as most functions in the boost library (and Microsoft's STL) seem to be declared inline and get implicitly instantiated every time, thus forcing the linker to remove them which is quite costly. This behavior is also perfectly valid with the standard where an exception is made for member functions of template classes defined inline. Would it be reasonable to change the coding guidelines to only define trivial member functions in the class body and provide the definitions separatly after the class declaration? I think gcc does implicitly sinatntiate these member functions, but the MS compilers are widely used and a large number of users would benefit.

I'm trying to use boost::geometry and boost::units together. For some reason boost::geometry doesn't represent the difference of two points as vectors. So, I'm making my own Vector class and defining Vector = Point - Point. Dear all, A few weeks ago, I asked for help about an EDSL which can handle expressions like x >> f >> g >> h so that they're equivalent to h(g(f(x))) once evaluated. Eric kindly provided me with the solution in the P.S. I was just playing around with his code and thought about extending it with a simple case when f's and g's are actually functions, as opposed to function objects. [units] Automatic Physical Units in Mathematica and Boost.Units

Since there are not many computer software that handles units seriously, except possibly for Boost.Units and Mathematica`Units in my opinion, I just wanted to point out to this post: Automatic Physical Units in Mathematica http://blog.wolfram.com/2010/12/09/automatic-physical-units-in-mathematica/ Interesting discussion in terms of features. One of the reasons I hated Mathematica units handling so far was due to the lack of a typing system which C++ and boost.Units have naturally, the other reason was that the physical quantites didn't seem to play well with other parts of the system. Now it seems that Mathematica Units is discovering "types". One of the features that it mentions is the ability to perform automatic conversions upon arithmetic operations of mixed units. In fact I was working in a way to perform automatic conversion in Boost.Units inside arithmetic formulas, since Mathematica has unbounded precision arithmetic by default the automatic conversions are not a real problem. An exact matching of this feature can not be achieved with a limited precision representation (like double). I'll take the opportunity ask two broad general questions: Does any body have experience with using boost.units quantity with a underlying type that are not double, e.g. multiple precision, or vector (geometric) objects? Does it work well? Are there future planned developments for Boost.Units, in terms of external features (e.g. automatic conversion, better interaction with boost.phoenix) or internal implementation? I'm attempting to set up pathfinding using Dijkstra's algorithm, and decided to use setS since I need to add/remove edges frequently and don't want to worry about adding parallel edges. I followed the dijkstra example as closely as possible, but since they have a static set of edges and use vecS to store the edge map, I'm pretty certain that's where the discrepancy lies. Any other examples, advice?

[netlib] Preparing for 0.9 and 0.8.1 Release, Help Wanted; Readying for Boost Submission

Hi Guys! (Apologies in advance for the cross-post) I've just pushed the master, 0.8-devel, and 0.9-devel branch onto the cpp-netlib repository -- please take the time to test all these branches as I work on getting the documentation up to speed on the 0.9-devel branch preparing for the release and submission for review on the Boost developers mailing list. I'm also welcoming contributions in the form of: * Website help, the current documentation look is OK, but if you have time to fix up some of the issues like the fonts, adding anchors and maybe reformatting the API pages so that it's easier indexed, that would be *sweet*. Also, we need a landing page on cpp-netlib.github.com which introduces the library, hosts stats, and maybe has other goodies that are specifically for a website and not necessarily for documentation. * Documentation -- please, if you have example use cases that you want to contribute, now is the time to contribute them. If you have real world use cases where you're actually using cpp-netlib, now would be a good time to have your use case highlighted in the documentation. * More string implementations -- currently I need help with supporting Qt strings, MS CString, and wide strings in the implementation of the HTTP Clients. Those who are using wide strings and unicode strings natively and who have more experience with them (I only ever deal with the "C" locale) would be most welcome to contribute to getting the HTTP client to either do conversions or natively support different string implementations. I can help with the integration part by introducing the extension points that may not be obvious from the design (as it is still largely undocumented). * Examples -- the current set of examples are a little trivial, and if you have some interesting examples you want to build on (or would like to implement some of the examples highlighted here: https://github.com/cpp-netlib/cpp-netlib/issues/labels/Examples) your contribution would be most welcome. There are some things that I've pushed out for later releases, as I would like to concentrate at the moment to making the HTTP implementations more robust and support a wider range of use-cases. I'm looking for people with experience with ESMTP 1.0 who would like to contribute to implementing a simple client implementation that we can build along the same design as the HTTP client implementation. There's already a MIME parser/generator library in cpp-netlib thanks to Marshall Clow (which he presented in BoostCon 2010) also being developed for inclusion into Boost -- hopefully we can get that baked into the ESMTP client implementation early on to make it more immediately useful. At any rate, please expect a slightly delayed release of 0.9 which would be the first release which defaults to non-header-only, while 0.8.1 will be the first patch update version for 0.8. Appropriate changelogs to follow as soon as the releases are ready. boost asio tcp::socket assign

Hi, I have a boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket variable (reference) in a class, and it is initialized at the object construction time. At a later time I need to assign a new socket to this "socket reference variable". I think boost::assign is meant for that. But when I use assign, get the following error... (or is there any other method available?) .....cannot convert parameter 2 from 'boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket' to 'const boost::asio::detail::win_iocp_socket_service<Protocol>::native_type &' The code snippet is as follows... class MyClass { .... ..... private: tcp::socket& Socket; } void MyClass::SetSocket(tcp::socket& s) { Socket.assign(boost::asio::ip::tcp::v4(),s); } What could be the reason? boost::mpl -- compiler running out of memory

I've some code, which is extensively using boost::mpl. It does not compile with g++ 4.5 or Visual C++ 2010 within 8GB of RAM -- always runs out of memory or runs into swapping (of course 64bit compiler). Is there any way to find out, how I can change this code to avoid needing so much memory?

Problems compiling Boost_1_45_0

Hi all, I recently decided to try and compile/install Boost for my MSYS/MinGW64 system. I downloaded the lastest sources for both bjam (3.1.18) and Boost itself (1.45.0). (More precise details of my sytem are below). I compiled my own bjam with no hassle and got a bin.ntx86_64 version and copied it to /mingw/bin. I used the generic command to build it (./build.sh) and let it auto-detect the toolset (gcc). However, the compilation started to fall over once I started to build Boost itself. Using the command /mingw/bin/bjam --prefix=/mingw/boost toolset=gcc address-model=64 variant=release link=shared threading=multi --build-type=complete stage I first received the following error (attachment: error1.txt) After some googling I found a bug report where someone mention the workaround of just removing the 'ignore-minus-q' part of the statement, this removed the errors and allowed me to continue with the build. Is this an acceptable workaround or is there something else that I should be doing here? Anyways, I know receive the following errors (attachment: boost.txt and attachment: boostd2.txt) I did some googling again and found a bug report that is very similar to what I am getting (almost identical except for versions and setup). Here is the link to the bug report https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/4839. The attachment boostd2 uses the exact same build command as above but with -d2 tacked on the end. Hi boost experts, using BOOST_PP_LOCAL_ITERATE() and friends I found the maximum number of iterations to be limited to 256. The according values seemed to be defined in .../preprocessor/config/limits.hpp But changing these values does *not* have any effect on the maximum number of iterations ... #define BOOST_PP_LOCAL_MACRO(n) g(n); #define BOOST_PP_LOCAL_LIMITS (1, 300 ) #include BOOST_PP_LOCAL_ITERATE() #undef BOOST_PP_LOCAL_MACRO #undef BOOST_PP_LOCAL_LIMITS ... still creates: g(1); g(2); g(3); ... g(255); g(256); the expected: g(257); g(258); ... g(299); g(300); are *not* generated. Stepping through the libraries code I found the mechanisms far more complicated than expected. Now my question: is there any recommended procedure to increase the iteration limitation to values like 10000 ? I found a couple of code locations explicitly repeating code with hard coded values from 1 ... 256. I guess at least this code needs to be extended, but probably consistent with some other changes. I am thinking of a perl script to generate stuff like that, but before working on that I'd like to get some qualified recommendations ;) Thanks in advance, Martin.

Mingw64 Boost Threads Build

Good Afternoon, We have been using boost-threads for our native APIs and, thus far, Boost has been a godsend! We had a recent request to build a 64-bit version of this API. To accomplish this we have attempted to build using MinGW64. Unfortunately, I have had zero luck getting boost-threads to build. I can build the 32-bit address model without a problem but 64-bit continues to elude me. I first tried Boost 1.35.0 and have now moved on to 1.45.0. I believe that the environment is set up correctly (see below). This build is being performed on a Windows 7 64-bit using MinGW64 from Cygwin. export CC=x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc.exe export CXX=x86_64-w64-mingw32-g++.exe export LD=x86_64-w64-mingw32-ld.exe I have, also, modified my PATH to use the appropriate 64-bit bintools and aliased gcc, g++ and ld to the 64-bit MinGW64 compilers and linkers. To build Boost I have used the following with no success. boostrap.sh address-model=64 -prefix=<install> --with-libraries=thread; bjam -a install; boostrap.sh -prefix=<install> --with-libraries=thread; bjam -a address-model=64 install; boostrap.sh -prefix=<install> --with-libraries=thread; bjam -a install; The last build attempt succeeds but appears to have built 32-bit binaries. The previous two fail in building boost-threads complaining that 'address-model-64' is not found for certain build artifacts. I have, also, tried the above with a prebuilt bjam with the same results. I have tried much more than what I have cited here (including MSVC builds) with no success (some built but resulted in 32-bit binaries). I have scoured Google and found many talking about this but most either had no resolution or contained instructions that conflicted or made no sense. Does anybody have any insight into how I can produce a 64-bit boost-threads archive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dustin P.S. taking the subgraph of a boost graph

Hi, Lets say your handed an arbitrary boost graph and an iterator to a subset of it's vertices. You want to induce a subgraph of this graph. How do you do this? I looked at the boost docs and found the Subgraph < Graph > page: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/graph/doc/subgraph.html Indeed there exists a subgraph member function: subgraph<Graph>& create_subgraph(); However this suggests, as does the example, that you want to take an induced subgraph of a graph whose type is Subgraph < Graph >. However my graph is just of type Graph. What is the right way to deal with this? I've tried asking at #boost, but no one seems to be awake there. Thanks, -rhl

Hi, Can anyone explain the performance characteristics of linear hashing. I read the Wikipedia article and I'm still not sure. The article mentions growing the hash table incrementally by 1, but the instrusive unordered_set doesn't grow/rehash unless you tell it to? When does it make sense to use the linear hashing option? Why is it not on by default? Is it because it slows down the address lookup into the table. Is the ideal bucket size still 1 per expected element. Thanks -ephi

The below code seems to function, though without the intended result, when I use a specified list instead of generating a new list by removing from the actual input. Hi, I have used boost message queues to setup IPC between a command client and a server on Linux. The client is a command which sends the command options and the server fetches the data and sends it to the client. The client prints the output received from server on the console. The data sent from the command is small but the data sent by the server to the command is huge(~11Mb). Server need to send the data to multiple command clients simultaneously as it is common to execute commands with different options at the same time from different terminals. The commands take quite some time to complete as the data sent from the server is huge. So more than one command running simultaneously is common. I do not see data missing when only one command is executed at a time. But when I execute two commands simultaneously, it seems that the data addressed to the two commands gets interleaved. I need to make sure that data addressed to multiple command clients is not interleaved. Only data addressed to that client should be received by a client. Since the same boost message queue with the same name is used for all the command clients, how can this problem be addressed. I read that Windows Named pipes handle this problem inherently . Could this be a problem with my implementation or is this a limitation of the boost message queues? Please let me know if you need more details Regards, Rohini Chandra

I use custom stl allocator to replace std::basic_string like this: typedef std::basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>, MySTLAllocator<char> > MyString; I want basic_ptree can use my allocator to do parse work, so I write code like this: typedef boost::property_tree::basic_ptree<MyString, MyString> PropertyTree; PropertyTree propertyTree; boost::property_tree::read_ini(std::ifstream(configFile.c_str()), propertyTree); And I met error at ini_parser.hpp, line 109~111: Str key = property_tree::detail::trim( line.substr(1, end - 1), stream.getloc()); if (local.find(key) != local.not_found()) the Str is a typedef at the begin of this function: typedef std::basic_string<Ch> Str; So my custom string can not assign to the key, so it seems can not use custom allocator at all. There have the same problem in xml_parser.
