From the trials it seems that the "VisitedT" works if it holds "simple" types like vertex decriptor etc and not aggregates. My intention with the DataMap to register the vertex parents and the vertex distance at the same time, when the edge is visited. Is there any limit on the library side or did I something wrong? [lexical_cast] locale dependent result?

Is the result of lexical_cast<std::string> locale-dependent? One of my contributors has submitted a fix for a problem he says is caused by lexical_cast adding commas to a port number, e.g.: 65535 becomes "65,535". I'm unable to reproduce this but it may be something specific to his locale. If this is the case, what would be the correct way to get a canonical, locale-independent string from an integer? Thanks. Hi all, Thomas Heller worked hard to address the outstanding issues of the original Phoenix review. He ported Phoenix to Boost.Proto. As mandated by the original Boost review, we will conduct a mini-review of his Phoenix V3 library. This mini-review starts today, February 20th, 2011 and ends on March 2nd, 2011. ------------------ About the library: The Phoenix library enables FP techniques such as higher order functions, lambda (unnamed functions), currying (partial function application) and lazy evaluation in C++. The focus is more on usefulness and practicality than purity, elegance and strict adherence to FP principles. Phoenix is a very important infrastructure library. [dateTime] construting a date with time

Hi: I'm currently doing some work with the boost date time library. Can the boost date class be constructed with a time, or do I need a separate time variable as well? [Filesystem] V3 interface inconsistency

Hello I came across the following interface inconsistency in Boost.Filesystem V3 (Boost 1.46.0) in boost::filesystem::path Windows: const std::string string() const std::wstring& wstring() Linux: const std::string& string() const std::wstring wstring() We converted V2 code looking like this (necessary since filename() in V3 returns a path instead of a string): const std::string& filename=path.filename(); The converted V3 code: const std::string& filename=path.filename().string(); Obviously this code crashes in Linux since filename() returns a temporary object and string() returns a reference to one of its members. However this code works in Windows due to the different return types. My question: Wouldn't it make sense for all methods to return a value instead of a reference? It would ease the transition from V2 to V3 and avoid subtle programming errors. Regards, Peter.

[Serialization] Testing if a provided file is actually a serialized archive

Hi, I would like to know if there exists a way to check for a given file if it is actually a serialized archive or a pure txt-file, at best without the need to read in that file completely. At the moment, I use boost::serialization to store self-defined class-instances in txt-files, so using something like the system's "file"-command would not bring me far. Now I would like my program to distinguish if the provided input-argument is a text-file that needs to be parsed or if it can simply restore this previous instance. Of course, using a separate option indicating if an archive was passed would work, but IMHO is not very beautiful. Best, Cedric

Bug in boost::phoenix ?

I am using boost::phoenix lambda functions and I am observing some weird behaviours when compiling with optimizations (-O3). The first issue is that compiling the following piece of code Compiling: const float x = 1.0f; const float y = 1.0f; std::cout << (arg1+arg2)(x,y); with g++ -Wall gives the warning: boost_1_46_0/boost/spirit/home/phoenix/operator/arithmetic.hpp:74:5: warning: returning reference to temporary And I suspect a bug in the project I am working on is a consequence of this. It is as if a boost::for_each( rng, lambda_fun ) was optimized out. I have opened a ticket on this issue: https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/5190 I suspect the issue comes from the type deduction inside phoenix. I first discovered the issue with boost 1.45.0, but it still here in 1.46.0. The other issue I am facing is similar. Consider the following code: namespace bp = boost::phoenix; using boost::phoenix::arg_names::arg1; int i=0; int a[] = {0}; template<class UnaryFunction> inline void foo( UnaryFunction fun ) { fun(i); } int main() { foo( bp::ref(a)[arg1]++ ); std::cout << a[0] << " "; (bp::ref(a)[arg1]++)(i); std::cout << a[0] << "\n"; } Compiled without optimizations, it corectly prints: 1 2 Whereas compiled with g++-4.5.1 -O3 with boost 1.45.0, it prints: 0 1, as if the first lambda invocation was removed. The issue disappears if I use g++-4.4 or boost 1.46.0. I tracked the changes between boost 1.45.0 and 1.46.0, and it seems related to https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/66411 applying the part of the changeset concerning: fusion/support/detail/is_mpl_sequence.hpp fusion/support/is_sequence.hpp fusion/support/sequence_base.hpp to boost 1.45.0 fixes the issue, but I can't see how this is related to the bug I observed. Hi, first sorry for my bad English. I try to use wide characters with archive to serialize into xml, and I don't know the good way to do this. Until now, we used serialization with ASCII characters and it works fine. Hi All, I have read the boost license and I think I can do what I need, but to be sure I prefer to ask your opinion. I'm working at a very small project and I would like to keep the dependencies to external library as more contained as possible. I'm now in the situation where I need boost::any class... Do you think I can simply take the boost/any.hpp file, including both license and author copyright and modify it to make it compile in my project. Am I violation the license if I do so? input format library

Is there any work being done on an input format library for Boost? Something similar to Boost.Format but for input rather than output? Google tells me that this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find any resolution of the issue. I'm interested because I need something like sscanf, but want it to be more powerful and safer (like Boost.Format vs. fprintf). I know there are workarounds using Boost.Spirit, Boost.Regex, std::istream, and boost::lexical_cast, but in my mind, none of those are a complete solution for this problem. Thanks. - Daniel

using the sandbox(es)

Dear all, My code uses some files from the boost sandbox repository as well as from boost. To be able tom compile my own code and stay up to date, I have downloaded and installed boost (svn, bjam) and downloaded the sandbox (svn). Now building boost was simple: create a build/ directory and call "bjam -a --toolset=gcc --build-dir=build --variant=release --link=shared --threading=multi --runtime-link=shared install" or something very similar In the sandbox things seem to be a bit differently. Using bjam in the same style as above does not work, in particular any "bjam ... install" comes back with a warning/notice notice: could not find main target install notice: assuming it is a name of file to create. don't know how to make <e>install ...found 1 target... ...can't find 1 target... and no files are installed (i.e. no files are copied to /usr/local/include). Is it possible to install the boost-sandbox files to /usr/local using bjam? Or is this not the way the sandbox should be used? many thanks Alle Meije Wink

Hi John, lists, I am replying to your ticket #5207 on the lists because I am afraid that you walked into a trap that others can fall into as well. In the ITL, the precursor of Boost.ICL there was a single polymorphic interval class template: itl::interval. Due to input from the list during the review I split up this "one size fit's all" template in smaller classes according to static and dynamic interval concepts. In order to help ITL users to have a simple transition from ITL to ICL I wrote a template icl::interval. icl::interval is a meta function that yields the right interval type dependent on the instance type e.g. : BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT(( boost::is_same< interval<int>::type , discrete_interval<int> >::value )); So ITL users could move from ITL to ICL just by appending a '::type' to all occurrences of 'interval<T>' So please note that interval<myType> myInterval; can not be used as an interval type in ICL functions. Undefined reference to boost_serialization even though it is specified with -lboost_serialization

Sorry, my bad. Hit "Send" before being finished... So let's start again... I apologize. Hi, I have a program that uses serialization-functionality for some of the self- defined classes. I specify "-lboost_serialization" with the g++ and it works fine on my local machine. However, when I want to compile it on a remote machine, it fails. The remote machine is lacking >=boost-1.42 which is needed. Therefore I built (no install) boost-1.45 remotely (under /local/cedric/boost_1_45_0) and at least the configure-script (generated using autotools) seems to detect all the necessary libraries and headers (provided I specify them in the environment variables), on my local machine aswell as on the remote machine. Now the problem is, that I don't find the reason why it fails to compile my program remotely... Any ideas? Help needed with successive calls to Asio routines using the plain old Windows API

Hi all: Using MS Visual Studio 2008 C++ for Windows 32 (XP brand), I try to construct a POP3 client managed from a modeless dialog box. As a first step, in the WM_INITDIALOG message in the dialog-box-procedure, I create a persistent object -say pop3- with all that Boost.asio stuff to do asynchronous connections. Some like: case WM_INITDIALOG: return (iniPop3Dlg (hDlg, lParam)); Here we assume that iniPop3Dlg() create the pop3 heap object -say pointed out by pop3p-, and then, connect with the remote server and initiate a session with the client’s id and password (USER and PASS commands). After that, the server is in TRANSACTION state. Then, in response to some user input, the dialog-box-procedure, call the appropriate function. Say: case IDS_TOTAL: // get how many emails in the server total (pop3p); return FALSE; case IDS_DETAIL: // get date, sender and subject for each email in the server detail (pop3p); return FALSE; Note that total() uses the POP3’s STAT command to get how many emails in the server, while detail() uses two commands consecutively; first STAT to get the total and then a loop with the GET command to retrieve the content of each message. As an aside: detail() and total() share the same subroutines -the STAT handle routine-, and when finished, both leaves the session as-is. That is, without closing the connection; the socket remains opened an the server in TRANSACTION state. When any option is selected by the first time, the things run as expected, obtaining the desired results. But when making the second chance, the connection hangs. A closer inspection show that the in the second chance, the first time that is use the statement socket_.get_io_service().run(); It never return. Note that all asynchronous wirte an read routines uses the same io_service, and the socket_.get_io_service().reset(); sentence prior to any io_service.run() Note also that all R/W operations also uses the same timer, who is reseted to cero wait afther each operation is completed: dTimer_.expires_from_now (boost::posix_time::seconds(0)); I suspect that the problem is in the io_service or in the timer, and the fact that subsequent executions occurs in a different load of the routine. As a first approach to mi problem, I hope that someone would bring some light in it, prior to a more detailed exposition of the -very few and simple- Asio routines involved.

boost::interprocess::interprocess_semaphore::timed_wait - how to do a relative wait

Hi: I'm using boost::interprocess::interprocess_semaphore::timed_wait and boost::interprocess::message_queue::timed_received. I have to specify an absolute time to give up waiting/receiving. This works in most cases, except my application sometimes needs to adjust the PC clock. If the PC clock is adjusted backwards in time, then these function wait longer than they should (since the end time is fixed in the future). Ideally I would like to provide an absolute time instead, which would be independent of the time of day? The API doesn't seem to allow this. How can I do this? I guess I could also use a deadline timer (ASIO). Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Jean

Hello Júlio, Thanks for your reply. I've tried to pass the libraries that I needed in a past attempt. It didn't help. If I don't specify any library to bootstrap.sh, all the libraries are built. This way, I'm sure I don't miss anything. It also makes the explanation of what I did more straightforward. I'll definitely have a closer look at the doc. I might have missed something, although it would be surprising to have to modify something in the configuration to make such a simple example build. Boost was compiled in the most straight forward way, i.e. from the boost root directory, I invoke the only two commands: ./bootstrap.sh make Note that I haven't installed the library in /usr/local. Since the example compiles fine with the problematic line commented out, I assume the include path is correct, and that the linker found libboost_system.a (in stage/lib). I also made sure there are no other versions of boost present on my computer to eliminate the possibility of a header/library version mismatch. Also, I've tried to compile with different architectures, both in debug and release mode. I couldn't remove this error. I looked for the missing symbol in both libboost_system.a and libboost_filesystem.a (nm -m <library name> | c++filt), and the filesystem2 namespace doesn't exist. My understanding is that the boost::filesystem2 namespace was never generated when I compiled the libraries, but for some reason is generated when I compile my little program. So I suppose there might be a definition that triggers or prevents this namespace from being created. Anyone has an idea about what should I do to remove my error? Hello, Currently (boost 1.46) boost::transform_iterator requires that the unary functor 'f' passed to it use the 'result_of' protocol to declare its return type (that is, it must either have a nested 'result_type' typedef, or in the case of polymorphic functions, a nested 'result' metafunction that computes the return type given the parameter type). Would it be a good idea to modify the requirements so that if the boost library detects C++0x support, it uses 'decltype' to determine the return type of the functor, so that the functor does not have to use the 'result_of' protocol? I would be happy to contribute a patch implementing this. Regards, Nate.

Hi: Having upgraded and build 1.46, I'm getting the error: 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_system-vc100-mt-gd-1_45.lib' Can someone tell me where the linking is controlled, I've done a search in the entire boost directory, but carn't find where this could be happening! Conditions for casting stream_buffer to std::basic_streambuf

Hi All, How do you construct an std::ostream from a boost::iostreams::stream_buffer<io::back_insert_device<...> > ? Is this not possible with a simple sink_tag for the category? I'm using libpng and want to abstract writing to a file directly or to a memory buffer. libpng provides hooks for write and flush functions, and never seeks. I implemented these functions for std::ostream and it works great for file writing. My assumption that it would be trivial to provide a std::ostream to a memory buffer turned out to be incorrect. Unfortunately type information is lost through libpng as you have to pass your io data as void*, which makes using templatized stream classes difficult. In the tutorial for iostreams it says: "The template io::streamis provided as a convenience. It's always possibly to avoid io::stream and simply use io::stream_buffer together with one of the standard library stream templates." I tried following this pattern, and it works great for files: io::file_sink sink(filename, std::ios_base::out | std::ios_base::trunc | std::ios_base::binary); io::stream_buffer<io::file_sink> streamBuf(sink); std::ostream pngStream(&streamBuf); However, I am having problems providing an ostream for the memory buffer case. shared_ptr<vector<char> > vec(new vector<char>()); io::back_insert_device<vector<char> > sink(*vec); io::stream_buffer<io::back_insert_device<vector<char> > > streamBuf(sink); std::ostream pngStream(&streamBuf); This snippet produces the following error in msvc 9 with boost 1.45. 2>error C2664: 'std::basic_ostream<_Elem,_Traits>::basic_ostream(std::basic_streambuf<_Elem,_Traits> *,bool)' : cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::iostreams::stream_buffer<T> *' to 'std::basic_streambuf<_Elem,_Traits> *' 2> with 2> [ 2> _Elem=char, 2> _Traits=std::char_traits<char> 2> ] 2> and 2> [ 2> T=boost::iostreams::back_insert_device<std::vector<char>> 2> ] 2> and 2> [ 2> _Elem=char, 2> _Traits=std::char_traits<char> 2> ] 2> Types pointed to are unrelated; conversion requires reinterpret_cast, C-style cast or function-style cast I noticed file_sink::category has more tags than back_insert_device::category, so I took the container_device in the tutorial and implemented all the tags that file_sink has, and still get the same error. Digging farther I see that basic_file::impl contains an actual std::basic_filebuf which can be casted to basic_streambuf. The basic_filebuf is private member of a private member, so shouldn't be accessible for normal casting and I don't see the cast explicitly provided. How does the file_sink to basic_streambuf cast work? How can I implement this cast for container_device without inheriting and overriding all of the methods of basic_streambuf? Is there an abstract parent class to boost::iostreams::stream or stream_buffer that allows for polymorphism to ease the pain of the required void* cast? I'm still relatively new to metaprogramming patterns. As a side note, the tutorial continues to suggest default-constructing a std::ostream, which is not possible at least with msvc's std implementation.

[Thread] Interrupting a thread causes a segmentation fault

Hello, I'm new to the Boost libraries and I've been attempting to implement basic multithreading using the Boost Thread library. I'm currently experiencing a problem: when I interrupt a thread my program crashes with a segmentation fault. I've done quite a bit of research on the internet regarding this problem and, although similar problems have been reported before, none of the solutions have worked for me (a number of people have indicated that interrupts work when linking with the static library, just not with the dynamic library, but I was using the static library to begin with). I now wanted to use the regex library; I left the default option of statically linking it in (no #define BOOST_REGEX_DYN_LINK) and also count on auto-linking (no BOOST_REGEX_NO_LIB). Is it possible to determine at compile-time if a type has subtraction semantics? E.g. in struct A<T> I would like to decide at compile-time not to execute &A::subtract in the register_fns method. UPDATE rules

Is seems that the UPDATE rule for BJAM was changed for 3.1.18. Now, if no targets are defined on the command line, UPDATE defaults to "all". See line #452 of jam.c. This is annoying. I don't want my default to be all, but there is no way (that I know of) the distinguish between an explicit "all" on the command line, and the new defaulted, implicit one. Anyone know of a workaround (outside of changing the code or using an older version)? Thanks.

Hi: I am looking in to using boost.signals2 for a project I'm involved in, but have a few queries: Firstly, if I create a global signall: boost::signals2::signal<void ()> sig; and then a structure: struct DoWork { void operator()() const { //work. } If I then create a private member of a class: DoWork work; And then do: Sig.connect(Work); Will the connection happen on the thread in which the work member variable was defined or will a second thread be utilized? Also given that sig will be a global and hence accessed from multiple threads, do I need a mutex? Cheers Sean.

Timing out when writing to serial port while still receiving data

I've created a wrapper class around boost asio's serial_port class: class SerialPort { public: void open(); void send(const std::vector<uint8> &data); void close(); private: void _startReceiving(); boost::asio::serial_port m_serialPort; boost::asio::io_service m_ioService; std::vector<uint8> m_recvBuf; }; The SerialPort class has an 'open' member function that opens the port and begins waiting for data to be received on the serial port. There's also a 'send' member function that writes the specified data to the serial port. Below is the code (running on a separate thread) that waits for data to be received on the serial port: Receive Thread -------------- while (m_recvData) { m_serialPort.async_read_some(boost::asio::buffer(m_recvBuf), boost::bind(&SerialPort::_recvHandler, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error, boost::asio::placeholders::bytes_transferred)); m_ioService.run(); m_ioService.reset(); } The problem I'm experiencing is that when the flow control of the serial port is set to RTS/CTS, and I try and write to the serial port with the cable unplugged or the CTS serial line otherwise low, the call is a blocking call. I realize this is the way it's supposed to work, but I need to make writing to the serial port timeout after a few hundred milliseconds instead of blocking until CTS goes high. Looking at the source code, the comment where the exception is thrown says that it's an unsafe operation to call cancel on the IO service from a thread when work has been given to the IO service from a different thread. This obviously fits my case - I've submitted an async_read on the Receive thread and I'm trying to cancel all asynchronous work on the Write thread. Is it possible to have a thread always running that's waiting for data to be received on the serial port as well as have a write thread that timeouts? If so, where did I go wrong above? Thanks, Russ

Hi: Ok, I'm trying to use boost::asio::io_service::run as follows. At the top of a .hpp file I have: typedef boost::asio::io_service FolderMonitoringService; I can pass this to a constructor requiring an io_service as follows: boost::asio::dir_monitor dm(FolderMonitoringService); however when I try to do: FolderMonitoringService.run(); I get 2 c2143 errors. 1>d:\work\access for everyone\sibelius access\sibeliusaccessserver\utility.cpp(127): error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '.' 1>d:\work\access for everyone\sibelius access\sibeliusaccessserver\utility.cpp(127): error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '.' If I remove the typedef previously shown, this line: FolderMonitoringService.run(); Compiles fine, but the line: boost::asio::dir_monitor dm(FolderMonitoringService); will not compile giving c2061, solved with the typedef-thanks igor! I've tried boost.ref, with know success. The function signature of the dir_monitor's constructor is: explicit basic_dir_monitor(boost::asio::io_service &io_service) Dir_Monitor is typedef'd to be basic_dir_monitor. Can anybody please tell me why the run function is causing an issue and how to fix this issue. Regards Sean.

Hello I have a compilation error when using BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_TPL_STRUCT on nested structure. namespace nsp { template< class T > struct Outer { struct Inner { int mint; }; }; } BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_TPL_STRUCT( (T), (nsp::Outer::Inner) (T), (int, mint) ) Above code generates compiler errors on g++ 4.4.5. Adding a new file parsing library

I've been using boost in my own projects for about 1 year now, and very often I've noticed that Boost does not have much file parsing support (I may be wrong as of now, please correct me). So, I was wondering if the community would be interested in a creation of a new library that uses the Boost::Filesystem set for cross platform file reading, and parses files for CSV, XML, HTML, etc. and tidies up the above if needed (much like the BeautifulSoup module for Python). Hi, after some debugging and testing i track down the problem to epoll. I don't known if it is a wrong usage by boost::asio or a bug inside the kernel. I've changed epoll_reactor.ipp with some debugging output and a memset. 226 void epoll_reactor::run(bool block, op_queue& ops) ... 239 epoll_event events[128]; 240+ ::memset(events, 0XEE, sizeof(events)); 241 int num_events = epoll_wait(epoll_fd_, events, 128, timeout); In case there are more events then one reported by epoll_wait, only the first epoll_event structure is filled with information. All following structures includes garbage or 0xEE set by memset befor calling epoll_wait. Debug output: Count events: 2 ---------------------------------------- EPOLL[0].data.ptr = 0x1ce8b0 EPOLL[1].data.ptr = 0xeeeeeeee So a workaround is to set maxevents to one. Hi: I'm new to working with asio, and have the following currently as two global variables: boost::asio::io_service FolderMonitoringService; boost::asio::dir_monitor dm(FolderMonitoringService); This works fine, but what I'd like to do is to make both variables private. When I do that, I get an error c2061 syntax error on the second line, in visual studio 2010. How can I pass a non-copyable class in to a constructor? Cheers Sean.

Hi group, I want to work with meshes that contain vertices, edges, and faces(1)(2). I've subclassed adjacency_list and added a std::vector to contain the face-data: http://pastebin.com/h4jxpDkt Is there a better solution? (somewhere in the BGL docs it says sublcassing BGL-graphs can be dangerous?) How do I provide a graph_traits::face_descriptor for my sublcass? (now I am using "unsigned int" for face descriptors) How do I allow choice between a vector and a list for storing the vertices? I have also made my first ever attempt (3) to write some template-based code which manipulates this graph class. That file has lots and lots of "typedef" "typename" and "graph_traits" in it. Hi there, I have some example code for boost::thread that illustrates a common multi-threaded design pattern. It's called Double Buffering which, I believe, is commonly used when a consumer is likely to be much slower processing items than a producer producing them. In this case a message queue is not really needed since a two element queue is as good as n element queue. Just imagine the case when a saving_to_database thread operates at 10MBit per second while a producer thread generates database rows at a 15MBit per second. For this example I decided to create a class binary_semaphore which simulates an event object that can either be set or unset. BTW, wouldn't a semaphore class be a nice addition to boost::thread? I can start a 32-bit VS command line and build boost_1_45_0, but the 64-bit command line build fails and I can't tell why. I'm running VS 2010 Ultimate on Windows 7 Professional, and here's the boost-build invocation I'm using: \.bjam -j 4 *^* More? *--build-dir=*"c:\temp" *^* More? *--build-type=complete* *msvc-10.0* architecture=x86 address-model=64 stage64 ...but I can't tell what is going wrong looking at the output. Can anyone suggest how to ascertain the problem? Perhaps a particular switch to see wha'ts failing? Thanks, Greg

Hi, in a recent project I am working in cgs units because the people involved is used to that system. I was surprised to find that the cgs unit system defined in boost.units doesn't have a temperature unit. The fact that there is no temeprature unit in cgs system may be by design, although I am pretty sure that if any "kelvin" is the unit of temperature in cgs. But independly of that I would like to have a cgs-system with kelvin as unit of temperature. How can I do that without having to create a whole new system of derived units almost equal to cgs and without modifying the boost sources? [GIL] gray pixel iterator in generic algorithm

I'm trying to use GIL pixel iterators in a generic STL-style algorithm. I'm primarily using GIL for the generic 2D iterators. And in my context, I'm only interested in grayscale images. The value_type associated with GIL iterators is a pixel type, which typically is an object representing multiple channels (e.g., colors). It makes sense that comparison operators (e.g., <) are not defined for general color pixel types. For grayscale images, however, it makes sense that common arithmetic and comparison operators would be defined for the pixel type. This seems to be the case for the 8-bit grayscale GIL type (gray8_view_t). The iterator's value_type appears to be seamlessly evaluated to an unsigned char, exactly as I would expect. When I try to use a float image view type, however, the same magic doesn't seem to happen. Below is some toy code that demonstrates the issue. When the last line is knocked out with "//", the code compiles. But with that second template instantiation (for floats) there, the compiler (gcc 4.2 and VC++2010) exits when it does not find an operator< for the iterator's value_type when instantiating for gray32fc_view_t. I suppose that I can roll my own less<iterator_traits<SrcView::x_iterator>::value_type> functors. But I just started using GIL, and I'm hoping that there is a simpler solution. Offering a possible replacement for boost::Pool

To whom it may concern... Two years ago I was looking for an implementation of a pool allocator, and found boost::pool. Unfortunately, the implementation was incomplete and hadn't been maintained for years, so I decided to write my own library, based on some of the ideas I found in the documentation for boost::pool. Now that I have a working library, I wondered if I should offer my results back to the community, but I am unsure how to go about that. What I currently have is an implementation that allocates, constructs, deconstructs, and deallocates class type objects from pool, and deallocates all unused blocks, all at constant time. The memory overhead is low, and there is some potential to reduce it even further, close to the original implementation of boost::pool. I am still missing some kind of 'garbage collection' (i. e. pack objects spread out over several blocks into one, so that I can release some unused blocks), and a decent method to allocate a whole array of m elements at O(m) (can't be less than that since I have to call constructors for each element). So this is still a work in progress. I've also started something resembling an article, that describes my goals, and how I came to make certain design decisions, down to the individual classes, structs, and their members. But I'm afraid in its current state it's not particularly helpful. How should I go about this - is there any place I can or should submit my stuff to, and what parts of it (naked lib, article, test program, VS project files)? Regards, Stefan

Hi list, I was in the need for a shared_from_this() in my constructor, so I chose this implementation for my class. Apart from the header being there and one mailing list thread, there's nothing that points to the existence of this header. Since we want to keep compatibility with Boost 1.38, I tried to backport the enable_shared_from_this2 class to that version. I was wondering why the weak_ptr::_empty() method was added to the weak_ptr API and why weak_ptr::expired() was not used instead ? I tried to emulate the same behavior by adding a 'bool' to the enable_shared_from_this2 class. Which works for my tests, but is there a pitfall to that solution ? Building boost on Visual Studio

I opened a 32 bit Visual Studio 2008 command prompt to the location of the boost-1.45.0 source then ran the bootstrap batch file to create bjam. After this I executed the following command to build boost. bjam --build-dir="X:\32Bit\VC.90\Libraries\boost-1.45.0" toolset=msvc --build-type=complete stage it appears that boost built successfully however it named them vc100 instead of vc90. I do not have Visual Studio 2010 installed on my machine. I never had it installed. Anyways to use these in the framework that I will be using them in I need the names to be correct. Is there any way to force bjam to use the correct visual studio version when it names the libraries? Thanks in Advance, John M. Drescher

I am able to work around my issue by casting away const on my reference before calling iterator_to and assigning the result back into a const_iterator, so for me it is nothing more than an annoyance, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention so it can be fixed in a future release. Dear Signals2 developers, I get an unused variable warning from my compiler (g++ 4.5.1, with flags "-Wall -Wextra -ansi -pedantic") at lines 510 and 515 of file "boost/signals2/detail/signal_template.hpp". The warning is issued for the parameter "is_group" which is not used any more. Please, could you fix it? TTI library updated in the sandbox to version 1.3

I have updated the TTI library in the sandbox 'tti' directory to version 1.3. The TTI library, which is an abbreviation for the 'Type Traits Introspection' library, allows a programmer to introspect at compile time the inner elements of a C++ type. The introspection process depends on specifying the name of the inner element by different macros for different types of elements, and then using a generated metafunction to determine whether that element exists within the enclosing type. The inner elements which can be introspected are type, class template, member data, member function, static member data, and static member function. With this update no functionality in the library has changed, but names have changed. The major change is that the library has been Boostified for possible review. 1) The update changes the library to use the Boost naming conventions. 2) The names of the main header files have been shortened and changed to 'tti.hpp' and 'tti_vm.hpp' respectively. 3) The macros in the library now start with BOOST_TTI. 4) The main namespace is now boost::tti. 5) Other filenames now follow Boost filename convention. 6) The documentation is distributed in both HTML and PDF format with indexes, and can be regenerated. 7) The variadic macro support in the library only works with the latest version 1.3+ of the variadic_maco_data library in the sandbox. The TTI library is based on the type_traits_ext portion of the Concept Traits Library, with improvements and additions, and also reproduces functionality ( without changing existing code ), for the purposes of completeness, from Boost.MPL regarding introspection of types and templates. The purpose of the library is to provide a consistent set of interfaces for doing compile-time introspection of a type, which other template metaprogrammers can use in their code. If you are at all interested in compile-time introspection of types, please take a look at the functionality of this library. There is a readme.txt in the top-level directory, for anyone browsing the sandbox. There is a build.txt file in the doc subdirectory for building the documentation and running the tests. The documentation is also included as part of the sandbox files for those who can not build the docs. The library has been tested and works with gcc 3.4.2, 3.4.5, 4.3.0, 4.4.0, 4.5.0-1, 4.5.2-1 and VC++ 8.0, 9.0, 10.0. It may also work with other compilers. Questions, comments, suggestions, and bug reports are all welcome.

I've experienced problems using asio::streambuf and am hoping someone can tell me if I'm using the class incorrectly. When I run this example code it segfaults. Why? Hi all. I've been looking thru the documentation at boost.org to try to understand Boost.Spirit. That documentation refers to Boost.Fusion, and at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_45_0/libs/fusion/doc/html/fusion/support/is… there's something I think needs clarification (at the very least), or is mistaken. The first line of the last paragraph of that page contains the following line:BOOST_MPL_ASSERT_NOT(( traits::is_sequence< std::vector<int> > )); I don't understand. I need to generate from a multinomial for a stochastic simulation. n is unlikely to be very large, however this generation (as well as some based on the gamma distribution) will need to be done at every time step and thousands of simulations would need to be executed. Hi, i've wrote a litte proxy using boost::asio (boost 1.45). Program runs well on Intel (Linux kernel 2.6.35.10 and gcc 4.5.1). Same code cross compiled for ARMV5TE (Linux 2.6.24.4 and GCC 4.1.2 or GCC 3.4.3) crashes always at the same point. Generating Multinomial Random Numbers

Hello, I was looking through the Math/Statistical Distributions and Random boost libraries to see if they provide an efficient way to generate random numbers from the multinomial distribution. I have read that one way of achieving this is to generate from binomial distributions sequentially, although I am uncertain as to how efficient this approach would be. Are there any alternative efficient approaches I could use? Does boost provide any other libraries that may help with this? Hi, The frequent heap usage of boost::any was problematic to me for small object sizes. So I made a small tweak in boost::any which provides inline allocation of objects smaller than a certain template defined size. It practically eliminated the performance overhead of heap allocation and deallocation in my project while providing all benefits of boost::any. [Serialization] Registering containers of user-provided types

I am writing a library that will handle storing and serializing user-defined types. The user-defined types are required to be themselves serializable. However the library uses templates to create containers of user types. These containers are then serialized through a base class pointer. I don't know how to export the container types to boost::serialization through the templates. The only way I can do it is to force the user of the library to BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID() every container type. I've tried unpacking the macro by looking at boost/serialization/export.hpp, but it is slightly complex... Is there a way to export a class as part of the template instantiation? Or another way to write the library to easily serialize containers of user-defined types?
