boost::mutex over a socket

Hi guys...I've 2 thread and I would like that one of these performs a synchronous read, menawhile the other performs a synchrounous write...adn obviously they share the same socket.....the signature of the functions are the following: length=boost::asio::read(socket_,boost::asio::buffer(msg,sizeof(msg)), ec); boost::asio::write(socket_,boost::asio::buffer(msgToSend,sizeof(msgToSend))); socket_ is a private field of the classe Server. How can I use the mutex to perform concurrently and safetly these operations? Thanks..

[GIL] Compilation times

Hello. I'm using g++-4.4 with boost libraries and they're great. However, I have to use some image manipulation algorithms for two types of images (rgb8 and gray). I'm using it successfully, however, compilation times have increased a lot: I use apply_operation and any_image and any_image_view with two types each (rgb8 and gray8) Is there a way to decrease compile times? [hash] Performance & distribution, variable bit width

As I use boost::hash quite a bit I have a few questions which the documentation seems to leave out. First of all it would be terrific if there was a performance & distribution benchmark as a part of the documentation to make it easier to evaluate the merits of using it. Secondly I'm a bit stumped on why the return value is fixed to size_t for a couple of reasons. Bit width of size_t isn't guaranteed to be constant, wouldn't this severely affect the distribution properties of the hashing algorithm used? Furthermore it would be great if the user could choose the bit width of the hash. Often the birthday problem is relevant, and being able to swap to using a 64 bit hash easily is something that doesn't seem possible but often desirable. Kind regards, Sebastian Karlsson

Hi, Sometimes it is difficult to make boost::units quantities with other libraries. For example to have boost::accumulators mean work with units, one has to specialize division by integer for quantities. In this example the accumulators and units compiles out of the box but gives an incorrect answer. #include<boost/accumulators/accumulators.hpp> #include <boost/accumulators/statistics/min.hpp> // or other stat features #include <boost/accumulators/statistics/max.hpp> // or other stat features #include<boost/units/systems/si.hpp> #include<boost/units/io.hpp> using namespace boost::accumulators; using namespace boost::units; int main(){ accumulator_set<quantity<si::time>, features<tag::min, tag::max> > a; a(2.1*si::second); a(2.0*si::second); a(4.1*si::second); std::cout << extract::min(a)<< " " << extract::max(a)<< std::endl ; return 0; } It prints: 0 s 4.1 s instead of: 2.1 s 4.1 s So, it seems that the min extractor fails for quantities. I would like to know if there is a way to correctly specialize "min" for quantities. (By the way, std::min for quantities works fine). However the behavior is unfortunate in the first place. Preventing iostreams from accessing freed memory

Hi all, I'm unable to prevent Boost iostreams from accessing memory once it has been freed, and I'm hoping someone here familiar with iostreams has some advice. As far as I can tell, when I push a standard iostream onto a filter, the filter holds on to a reference of it. If this happens inside a function, then when the function returns the iostream is freed, followed by the filter. In its destructor the filter tries to perform a flush/close and promptly segfaults, as it is trying to access the iostream which has just been freed. There is a set_auto_close() function I can call on the filter which sounds like it would do the trick, but it doesn't and according to the docs it's because it "does not prevent the Filters and Devices in the chain from being closed [flushed] automatically if the chain is complete at destruction." So is there any way I can prevent a filtering_stream from performing I/O in its destructor? Thanks, Adam.

temporary filenames

Hello, is there any implementation for creating temporary files names? I'm using tmpnam, but it can be dangerous. On posix systems I can use mkstemp. Is there any save implementation within the boost (perhaps in the iostreams)? Thanks Phil

Hello, I am experiencing some strange behaviour when using adaptors with a range-based for loop. Hello, I wanted to do some testing of XInt for the review, so I thought I could try it with a gaussian elimination code that I'm working on. I only had a quick glance at the library; the documentation seems very clear and my code compiled fine with Boost.XInt at the first attempt, just by changing one typedef. I'd like to join Christofer Jefferson in his praise of the work done for making XInt easy to use. However, running it seemed to take forever. Access violation when setting up a serial port

This feels like it should be a very simple solution, but I'm very much a Boost newbie, and relearning C++. I'm trying to set up a serial port in a class constructor of a legacy program I am updating. The serial port and io_service definitions are in the header file. The class is MFC. Header file declarations: boost::asio::serial_port port; boost::asio::io_service io; Here is the class constructor: CCplusplus_TesterDlg::CCplusplus_TesterDlg(CWnd* pParent) : CDialog(CCplusplus_TesterDlg::IDD, pParent), port(io, "COM3") { m_hIcon=AfxGetApp()->LoadIcon(IDR_MAINFRAME); } If I comment out the port and io declaration and the port initialization from the constructor, I can pass the constructor fine in debug mode. Thank you for your help but it didn't change anything. After few hours working on this problem, i've fix it: In a new VS2010 project, with the same source code, this code works without any error in async_accept callback. Finally, i find out that it didn't work because i was using pragma lib in one of my file for managing windows services: #pragma comment (lib, "advapi32.lib") #pragma comment (lib, "user32.lib") When I removed this file, error disappears. Then, I put theses lib in project's configuration instead of using pragma and everything works! Although I don't understand the problem, it's now working. Hello, I am currently using find_if with bind2nd to perform a search on a vector. I get a ton of warnings (well over 5000 in the code base I am compiling) from function_base.hpp when compiling with gcc. boost-1.46.0/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:321: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules boost-1.46.0/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:325: warning: dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing rules This has been a known problem for a very long time, and the work around is quite simple. Replace reinterpret_cast<functor_type*>(&in_buffer.data)->~Functor(); with functor_type* p = reinterpret_cast<functor_type*>(&in_buffer.data); p->~Functor(); and replace reinterpret_cast<functor_type*>(&out_buffer.data)->~Functor(); with functor_type* p = reinterpret_cast<functor_type*>(&out_buffer.data); p->~Functor(); Would it be a reasonable request to have this simple patch applied to the boost source code? min and max preferring NaN

'Afternoon, The usual std::min and std::max prefer numbers over NaNs per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_754_revision#min_and_max. POSIX's fmin(3) does as well. Can anyone suggest a better implementation (chained ternary complaints aside) for a NaN-preferring min or max than brute force things akin to template<class T> inline const T& minnan(const T& a, const T& b) { return UNLIKELY((boost::math::isnan)(a)) ? a : (a < b) ? a : b; } where UNLIKELY is a small macro telling the compiler to generate code expecting that the boost::math::isnan test fails? The need arises in a numerical simulation where I want to gradually accumulate a global minimum where throwing away NaNs ("windowing" in IEEE 754 revision-speak) is the unacceptable. Thanks, Rhys

Is it possible to predefine a subrange or project with a specific range so that when called I only had to pass in the matrix? I'm currently dealing with several 9x9 matrices that I need to access the 3x3 submatrix (topleft, topmiddle, topright, etc.). Is there a way to typedef or templatize a subrange or project so that I just need to pass the 9x9 matrix and get the topleft matrix? [Boost] [Interprocess] Use of Boost.Move in interprocess affecting causing compilation errors with 1.46

Hi all, I'm having a problem compiling some code with boost 1.46 that was compiling fine with 1.36 to 1.43 (or thereabouts). It appears that this is somewhat related to the use of Boost.Move in the Boost.Interprocess library. I have tried to read up a bit on Boost.Move, but have failed to quite understand what of it applies to me. Hi, How can I write a lambda expression with two placeholders, one for the callable object, and one for the function argument, such that supplying the callable object first returns a unary function? In the example below, generate should be a lambda expression with the first placeholder for the callable object itself, and the second placeholder for the argument. Calling generate(c) should return a unary function that is only missing the function call argument. Hi guys...I would to make a simple multi process (not thread) server. I've seen the iterative example in which it handles one request at a time. Instead I need to handle more requests(more on less 10) at the same time. [iostreams] restriction device/filter

Hello, I'm looking at the implementation of the "restriction" device, from Boost.Iostreams library, which provides access to a subsequence of the original device. When it reaches the end of the input subsequence, the restriction device start performing read()'s of size zero on the original device. Shouldn't it be returning an end-of-sequence marker (EOF) instead? I am using a restriction device as source parameter for the iostreams::copy function and this always results in an infinite loop. [Context] Mac OS X support?

I just glanced over the proposed Boost.Context library documentation prior to a more thorough read, and this TODO item jumped out at me: * support of Mac OS X This is one of our major target platforms. However, it's worth noting that Mac OS X 10.5 introduced support for the ucontext family. We are currently using the (proposed) Boost.Coroutine library [1], [2], a GSoC project from a couple years back. On Windows, Boost.Coroutine uses fibers; on Posix platforms, it uses ucontext. Because Mac OS X 10.4 did not yet support ucontext, I hacked in context-switching for that target based on the Pth library [3]. Boost.Coroutine did not introduce a context-library abstraction layer. Presumably one of the fruits of accepting Boost.Context would be the opportunity to port the Boost.Coroutine API to use Boost.Context rather than its own (similar but not as well-encapsulated) underpinnings. (If anyone cares -- I realize that acceptance of Boost.Fiber could make Boost.Coroutine moot. I intend to read up on that too.) Anyway -- it seems likely to me that Boost.Context will support Mac OS X 10.5+ "out of the box." I intend to check that. If it's important for Boost.Context to support Mac OS X <= 10.4, it might be fairly straightforward to implement the Boost.Context API on top of Pth. Reference [2] contains my macro-based attempt to establish equivalences between the ucontext API and the Pth API. However, at this moment in history, one must ask how important it still is to support Mac OS X <= 10.4? [Join] Simplified concept introduction?

I saw the Join library on the review queue and am somewhat curious. But I find the terminology a bit off-putting: ports, chords, joints. I've read the Introduction, the discussion on Join concurrency and the comparison with Futures/Promises. I know this sounds awfully dumb, but I still don't understand the moving parts or how they relate to each other. The Introduction leaves the impression that I could only understand (would only be interested) if I were already a fan of JoCaml or C(omega), neither of which I'd ever heard of before. The library author might reasonably assert that I should read all the available documentation if I want to understand the library. But that's backwards: I have not yet found any reason why I should want to understand this library. When I encounter a new Boost library, my first question is always: how would I use this? What problems in my work would be addressed by this library? How could it make my life easier? The closest I've so far gotten with Join is a vague sense that I could use it to implement Futures, if I didn't already have such a thing. Were I not already somewhat curious about ways to organize async code, I wouldn't have read even this much of the documentation. What's the point of this rant? - I'd like to request a bit more introductory material. If one of the References includes an excellent discussion of why I should be interested, please promote the link (a specific section link) to the Introduction. Otherwise, please add some new prose with specific examples. - I'm aware that this may be clearer to others than it is to me. If you understand the proposed Join library and feel its documentation is sufficient, now would be a good time to say so. My assumption at the moment is that if the Join library were accepted as-is into Boost, few people would even attempt to understand it because, like me, they would have a tough time figuring out how it might apply to their problem space.

[Review] Phoenix V3: review results

All, The review of Phoenix V3 ended on March 2nd. We've got quite some discussion, even if we hoped for more. Overall, 3 people have confirmed that the Phoenix rewrite addresses all issues raised during the original review back in 2008. Nobody raised any concerns or serious issues. So here is the result of the mini-review: Boost.Phoenix is ready to be moved to the Boost SVN trunk! All other discussions were about minor inconsistencies, which Thomas has already fixed by now. There are a couple of suggestions related to the documentation, which he agreed to address as soon as possible: 1) The Phoenix documentation should have a "What's New" section 2) Compile time is often a concern with libraries that make heavy use of expression templates. Adding a compile time test would be ideal. This should be easily invoked and results from various compilers reported within the documentation. The only thing, which needs to be decided (and which has not been discussed yet) is how the migration from Boost.Bind, Boost.Lambda, and Phoenix V2 has to be organized, ensuring minimal disruption for the users of those libraries. I see several possible ways of doing so, but would like to open up the discussion. Any suggestions and comments are welcome. With high likelihood this migration process will be implemented using forwarding headers. Therefore, this point has not to be resolved before moving the main code base to trunk. On the other hand, this migration strategy needs to be in place before merging to the release branch. -------------------- This mini-review wraps up the review process of Boost.Phoenix. Congratulations to Thomas for this version of the excellent library, which will contribute to the unification of the functional landscape in Boost. At the same time I would like to mention a couple of names which are related to the development of Phoenix since its inception, and without those Boost.Phoenix wouldn't have happened. - Joel de Guzman, who wrote the initial V1 and since then was actively involved and driving the development of Boost.Phoenix - Dan Marsden, who is the main developer (with Joel) of Phoenix V2 - Angus Leeming and Daniel Wallin who contributed to V2 - Eric Niebler, the author of Boost.Proto, who contributed to V2 and was actively driving and supporting the development of V3, he also mentored Thomas Heller's GSoC project. Thread question.... detecting deadlocks?

I assume I will find the answer to this right after hitting "send", but my googling so far has turned up nothing. Is there a way to turn on deadlock detection in the thread library somehow? I realize it would be slow, and possibly change the behavior of my program so as to give a "false negative", but I'd still like the option. Sigh. (note to self: don't hold locks across a function, unless you know exactly who and what that function will call).

---------------------------- Executive Summary ---------------------------- Boris Schäling's Process library was reviewed from February 7th, 2011 through February 20, 2011. The library sparked a lively debate on the mailing list, and in the end, eight reviews were submitted: - 1 review ACCEPT - 2 reviews CONDITIONALLY ACCEPT - 5 review DO NOT ACCEPT Since there was not a clear view in either the discussion or the votes that this library should be accepted: The Process library IS NOT ACCEPTED into Boost. There was considerable disagreement both about the scope of the library (what features to provide) and how the features were implemented. More than one alternate design was proposed, and the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches (where to install signal handlers, having a single thread vs. one thread/child) were debated vigorously. However, there was a fairly broad consensus that the library, in its present state, was not ready to be included into Boost. Thank you to everyone who participated, and especially to Boris and those who wrote a review. Hi, Currently my company are having issues compiling Boost Interprocess 1.42 on Solaris sun Studio. I see from Boost documentation that this compiler is not listed as having been used to build Interprocess: i.e. * Visual 7.1 Windows XP * Visual 8.0 Windows XP * GCC 4.1.1 MinGW * GCC 3.4.4 Cygwin * Intel 9.1 Windows XP * GCC 4.1.2 Linux * GCC 3.4.3 Solaris 11 * GCC 4.0 MacOs 10.4.1 I have also seen from this next thread that there is a bug logged against this issue as posted from someone with a similar issue: http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1992480&tstart=45 "Unfortunately, your problem is one of the outstanding issues with Boost that we have not yet resolved. This one is bug number 6954828, generated internally, and not visible at bugs.sun.com. Fixing bugs that prevent Boost from compiling is a priority item for us, but I can't predict when a fix for this problem will be available." This was posted a year ago so i am wondering has this been fixed in recent Boost editions or plans to? If not is there a recommended workaround? I have a large nbr. of elements to insert (10^5) but even the first 1000 are very slow. spirit classic - matching end of file space

I have a parser that works great except if there's space at the end of the stream. I can't seem to come up with a manner to match that space. The file consists of a header block followed by any number of "shape" blocks. I'm calling the parser with: boost::spirit::classic::parse(begin, end, grammar, boost::spirit::classic::space_p) My file grammar looks like so: shape_file = !( header[assign_a(self.header_was_read, t)][assign_a (self.read_header, shape_file_header_grammar::current_header)] ) >> *( shape[push_back_a(self.read_shapes, shape_grammar::current_shape)] ) ; The parser seems to break down because space at the end of the stream makes it try to read another shape. My shape grammar looks like so: shape_block = // := <shape_header> "Begin" <element>* "End" (shape_header | shapeheader_error) >> (as_lower_d["begin"] | begin_error) >> *element >> as_lower_d["end"] ; I've tried adding '*space_p' at the end of both of the above. I've also tried '*lexeme_p[space_p]' in both. Neither fixes the problem. I've left out the various other bits of the grammars because it all works, with this minor issue about end of file space. Hi, I whish to create a boost graph gui using qt However I have a problem I do not know how to link qt to boost graph. If I use bundle property of qt object could I get next and previous node from the qtobject? I am thinking about using a sets indexed by qtobject adress but I seems really painfull for managing memory. Particularly I want my implement my algorigthm on the graph and able to modify the graphical object from the boost::graph but also able to modify the graph from graphical qt object Any ideas? Hi Everyone, I just recently finished a consulting project that tied me up good the past three months. Now that I'm pretty much free again to work on cpp-netlib, I went for the things that have been brought up most recently on the list (and the Boost developers mailing list): 1. The server tests that used a different port each, configurable at the command-line with a default. This is already in 0.9-devel. 2. An option to turn off the required external library to be linked with a macro (BOOST_NETWORK_NO_LIB). With this macro defined before any cpp-netlib headers are included (or on the command line) the functions that were made extern or just free functions at namespace level are marked 'inline' and have their definitions pulled in accordingly in each translation unit. This addresses Jeff Garland's and others' concern of the need for an external library when using cpp-netlib when it's always been header-only until 0.9. I'm still wrestling with the thought of making the header-only behavior a default, but I'm not married to the "external library as default" decision either. 3. A consistent look/view between server-side request/response objects and client-side request/response objects. Now they can be dealt with using the same directives and modifiers. 4. Starting to change the library name to Boost.Network (after the suggestions). #2 is still undocumented, but I am going to be including a Doxygen-Sphinx bridge that would allow us to write documentation in-line on the types and have Doxygen invoked when the Sphinx documentation is built. I found a Sphinx extension to do that and it looks like it can be bundled with cpp-netlib as well (because it's under a BSD license) -- it's called "breathe" and can be found here: http://michaeljones.github.com/breathe/ #3 has been in the branch for a while already and it should be doable to back-port some of the things to the 0.8 line. #4 is largely a documentation matter. I have decided that in order for the development of the network library to scale, that I would spear-head a mini-community effort that would be called "The C++ Network Library Project" taking in a diplomatic and consensus-building approach. This way those willing to contribute to the effort can help with setting the direction of the library, the design decisions, etc. with me starting as the "benevolent dictator" and letting more people jump into the fray and becoming co-maintainers and regular contributors. There are already a couple of people (Oleg Malashenko and Emre Turkay) who have recently contributing to the project that I would like to thank, and also give the chance to get a bigger role in the development of the library going forward. So for now the focus is still to get a review-ready library for inclusion in Boost that would be called Boost.Network. I think 0.9 will be ready in a couple of days and will be a the pre-1.0 snapshot that will be submitted for review, getting all the required documentation in place. [asio] negating address_configured

What is the correct way to negate the (default) resolver flag, address_configured? On Windows, at least, specifying address_configured (which translates to AI_ADDRCONFIG) has a nasty side effect. If the 'external' network is down, the resolver can no longer resolve the "localhost" address. More here http://src.chromium.org/viewvc/chrome/trunk/src/net/base/host_resolver.cc?r… address_configured is the default flag for ip::basic_resolver_query so I need to specify a flag that turns it off. In the underlying addrinfo struct this would just mean specifying 0 as the flag but that isn't an option with ASIO as far as I can tell. How would I do this? Thanks! Boost::asio, complexity

Hello everyone. I've been using Boost::Asio recently for tasks that one would often use languages such as Python or Perl for (e.g. sending GET requests), but I use C++ and ASIO since: 1) I need substantial speed 2) I just like C++ However, I notice that even though Asio works wonderfully for larger, asynchronous projects, it gets in the way while doing smaller, more routine tasks. And, asio also is not a miniscule library and when creating binaries, one is often including things he/she wouldn't need. So, I wrote a small library (<500 LOC) that basically lets you pretend that a socket is a stream and you can use it like std::cout and std::cin. Would anyone consider having this included in the Boost repository, or even merged with Asio (the former is preferable because of the binary size reason)? It currently works on Linux, and I'm working on compatibility with Windows. Help needed to reconnect a socket to a new endpoint with Boost asio in Windows

I'm having trouble when in Windows XP, try to connect a socket to an endpoint after being connected to another. This is the situation: a) The boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket is connected to a remote host (say pop.remote1.com) b) The transmission ends, and the socket is closed: socket_.shutdown(boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket::shutdown_both, error); socket_.close(error); Then, when trying to connect to another host (say pop.remote2.com) using the same process that in a), the proccess returns without error, but the socket remains closed. Note that when using pop.remote2.com as the first connection, the things run Ok, and the same problem arises if try to connect to pop.remote1.com after closing. In both situations there are not pending processes in the attached io_service. I tried to open the socket before the reconnection, but the result remains the same. That is, the result is the same if after closing the previous connection with. socket_.shutdown(...); socket_.close(...); is used socket_.open(...); socket_.async_connect( ... ); or just socket_.async_connect( ... ); The questions are: Is that reconnection admissible? Is that the supposed correct process? Thanks in advance.

[foreach] gcc 4.5 & 4.6 compiler error with BOOST_FOREACH(auto&& ...) loop

Hello, The following code fails to compile with gcc 4.5 or 4.6: #include <boost/foreach.hpp> template <typename> void f() { int A[6]; BOOST_FOREACH(auto&& x, A) ; } void g() { f<int>(); } The error is: test.cpp: In function 'void f() [with <template-parameter-1-1> = int]': test.cpp:14:12: instantiated from here test.cpp:6:5: error: invalid initialization of reference of type 'int&&' from expression of type 'int' Interestingly, the error goes away if I make f() a non-template function. It also compiles fine with gcc 4.4. I explained this wrong. What is really happening is that each thread has a pointer to the object (forget about the vector for the moment) and it uses this as a key many hours later. When it is given serialized access to the "model/database cache", the thread wants to do work using that key, of course now it is no longer valid. This is why using map works, but I did not want to search every time, that is why weak_ptr works. Just wanted to know the best approach for this type of problem. All access to everything is thread safe. Any thoughts now?

Threading a Shared Model with pointers I have a vector of pointers to objects created with new. Multiple threads access this vector in a safe manner with get/set. However, a thread may delete one of the objects, in which case another thread's pointer to the object is no longer valid. How can a method know if the pointer is valid? I have to examples that work and would like your thoughts. Test for pointer validity: 1. Use integers instead of pointers. A hash (std::map) checks to see if the pointer is still valid. Public methods look like get(size_t iKey), etc. Insde the method it does: if((it = mMap.find(iKey)) != mMap.end()) { TMyType * pMyType = it->second; // do something with know good pointer. } 2. Have a vector of shared_ptr. Each thread tries to call lock() on its weak_ptr. If the returned shared_ptr is null we know someone deleted it while we were waiting. Public methods look like get(boost::weak_ptr<TMyType> pMyType), etc. Insde the method it does: boost::shared_ptr<TMyType> pGOOD = pMyType.lock(); if (pGOOD == NULL) { // null, bad pointer do something return; } 3. Test for null on plain raw pointers? Is this possible? Public methods look like get(TMyType * pMyType), etc. Option 1 and 2 actually seem to work well. I don't know how they will scale. What is the best approach? Is there a portable version 3?

Boost Concepts with iterators and ranges

I've been experimenting with Boost Concepts in conjunction with Boost Range and by implication boost iterators. I have a few questions from the documentation: a) I see BOOST_CONCEPT_USAGE described in some detail in the section Creating Concept Checking Classes. But in the section titled "Reference" I only find in the subsection "macros" BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT and BOOST_CONCEPT_REQUIRES. Is BOOST_CONCEPT_USAGE meant to be used? b) "Deprecated Concept Checking Classes" "For each of the concepts documented here, the library includes an identical concept checking class whose name ends in "Concept" For example, in addition to RandomAccessIterator, the library defines a RandomAccessIteratorConcept class template." It sounds like this means that I shouldn't expect to find "WritableIteratorConcept" but in fact in "interator_concepts.hpp" find just that. I'm assuming that's an oversight. c) except for the above, the Range library uses things like ForwardTraversal and ForwardTraversalConcept the iterators library uses ForwardTraversal only. d) the iterators concepts are in the root namespace boost_concepts while the range concepts are in the root namespace boost. e) boost/range/concepts.hpp includes the file boost/iterator/iterator_concepts.hpp All this makes it very hard to keep all this straight in one's head. Is there any possibility that all this could be made simpler to follow by some combination of documentation improvements and/or namespace coordination? Robert Ramey

Hi all, With boost::program_options::parse_config_file, is there any way to escape a literal hash symbol ('#')? I want to set std::string-based option 'foo' to contain the var 'bar#baz', but the sensible-seeming foo=bar\#baz fails in that 'foo' only contains 'bar'. Other variants on quoting and escaping also fail. The source for common_config_file_iterator::get() in config_file.cpp seems to indicate this isn't possible. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Hi guys... Reading docs, I understand that acceptor.async_accept(), accept a connection and immediately return, so the acceptor can accept another concurrent connection request...and in the meanwhile the handler can process the request...it's right? I need to make a server that listen connection requests, and create a separate process (child) to handle each of them, so it can be still waiting a new connection. The classic MultiProcess Server. Can I do this simply using the async_accept, without create new process?or I'm missing something? Thanks...

[date_time] Concurrent posix_time streaming crashes under MinGW-32

The attached program crashes under MinGW-32 (gcc-4.4), but works under VC8. It does concurrent streaming of posix_time::ptime values to a std::ostringstream. Mutexing the ostringstream from construction to destruction keeps it from crashing, but that shouldn't have to be done for independent streams. Mutexing just the ptime insertions makes it run longer, but it still crashes. I'm posting it here instead of taking it straight to Trac to see if anyone has input. Could it be related to <https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/3961> or <https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/3369>? I've got a case, where I need to transmit a timestamp across the wire, in a cross-platform manner. My first choice was boost::ptime, but I cannot seem to find a way to serialize a timestamp in a nice compact manner (i.e.: Two UINT64's, or four, or whatever). This is actually pretty important, as I need to define the ICD between the sender and recipient. Am I just overlooking something slick? Thanks --dw

Hi, I am using Boost.Python quite extensively (even stretching it to the limit in some cases). Now I cave this problem: Is there any way to intercept uncaught exception in embedded Python code? I need to add some information to an exception/traceback in this case. I have full control over environment before embedded code is executed. I thought I'll be able to use sys.excepthook, but it does not seem to be invoked. Alternatively I'd can live if I can somehow retrieve the context of failed call (global/local dict?) in boost::python::error_already_set handler. Please advise, Gennadiy

Boost.Unordered: custom hasher

Hello all, for using the unordered_set with a user defined class one can define a custom hasher. There seems to be the following options: - overide boost::hash_value - write ur own custom hash functor Both options have then an external hash function. I was more thinking about using a member function as hasher (e.g. like GetHashCode). A supporting class would be then: template <typename T, typename RetType, RetType (T::*pmf)() const> struct unary_function_mf : std::unary_function<T, RetType> { RetType operator()(const T& r) const { return (r.*pmf)(); } }; which makes specifying an unordered_set easier: boost::unordered_set<Person, unary_function_mf<Person, size_t, &Person::GetHashCode> > uset2; My questions: 1) is this correct c++ 2) does something similar exist in Boost (Boost.Function and Bind doesn't seem to support his) 3) is there an advantage of using a free function over functor? The free function has at least one advantage, that it also works with the std::pair hasher.

Hello, Phoenix is an outstanding component, I have no doubt about that. However I have had some mixed results for my use case using V2 and now switching to V3. I'm writing a (header only/template) library which uses Boost.Phoenix internally. By nature this library (a mock object library) often ends up in precompiled headers because it's convenient to have it de facto included for whole (unit test) applications. By default Microsoft Visual Studio allocates a certain amount of memory for compiling a precompiled header, and if it actually needs more then it fails to compile. For instance with only : #include <boost/phoenix/phoenix.hpp> Here is the error message with vc80 : ...boost/fusion/container/vector/vector10.hpp(52) : error C3859: virtual memory range for PCH exceeded; please recompile with a command line option of '-Zm160' or greater ...boost/fusion/container/vector/vector10.hpp(52) : fatal error C1076: compiler limit : internal heap limit reached; use /Zm to specify a higher limit The location of the error is irrelevant, the value suggested by the compiler is what matters. Here it suggests to add /Zm160 to the command line. This is pretty huge, the default is actually /Zm100, and I'd say "big" Boost libraries are around 50. /Zm100 now means 75MB since vc90 instead of 50MB for vc80, which helps a bit, but still... Here is a quick survey I did with vc80, using a /Zm1 to trigger an error every time. So V3 reduces the code of Phoenix itself but now uses (a lot) more of other Boost libraries, which incidentally is consistent with the main target of V3 switching to Boost.Proto Of course the resulting amount of memory required for my library is not the sum of the memory required for each included library taken separately (mostly because they re-use each others). And furthermore I can mostly work around the issue by using only phoenix::bind and rewrite some of the missing bits (for instance phoenix::throw_ and phoenix::nothing) But even then and with carefully selecting the includes, it ends up pretty close to the default /Zm100. This means that if the users of my library add a couple more libraries to their pch (Boost.Test comes to mind), they will most certainly go over the limit. All right, after boggling a bit, they will add a bigger /Zm and forget about it for a while, until they upgrade either my library or Boost. Suddenly a lot of their test applications fail to compile because instead of some /Zm112 it now requires /Zm113, and they will need to go over all their projects and update them... For having this happening at my day job on a regular basis, I can attest first hand it is indeed annoying ! I started by saying I have had mixed results using Phoenix, this is because on one hand I resorted to rewriting what I needed using only phoenix::bind and I fear for the future usability of Phoenix, but on the other hand switching to V3 boost/phoenix/bind.hpp actually saves some memory compared to V2 boost/spirit/home/phoenix/bind.hpp ! [Units] Variant runtime analysis

Hello all, My use case is the following : I have a function that returns quantities of different units depending on its input parameters (different derivatives). I could split the function in two parts that returns one unit only, but that would move the problem to an other place in my code. Is there any way to handle this, without breaking the dimensional analysis ? I have been playing with things like : quantity<variant<force, length, energy> > but it doesn't seems to go anywhere... Is is possible to place multi_arrays in maps???

I need a set of multi_arrays, and so far it seems that I can only have one of them (with the same name) at a time. What I need is a loop where the original multi_array is resized, filled and the current copy saved in a map. Is that possible? TIA, -RFH

boost::range : comparison operators

Hello, I'm interested in make_iterator_range( container ); defined in http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/trunk/boost/range/iterator_range_core.hpp in order to adapt container to have comparison operators. While, template< class IteratorT, class ForwardRange > inline bool operator<( const ForwardRange& l, const iterator_range<IteratorT>& r ) is defined, operator>, for example, isn't. Is there a functionality that provides all operators? Thanks.

Boost + ICU in Windows with MinGW

Hi mates, I have a question about boost compiled with icu support for using it in another library (freeling). All this work is in windows using mingw32, the icu 4.2.1 library and boost 1_40. I compile boost with the following bjam line $ bjam toolset=gcc variant=release threading=multi threadapi=win32 link=shared runtime-link=shared --prefix=$PREFIX --user-config=tools/build/v2/user-config.jam -j 2 --with-filesystem --with-program_options --with-regex define=U_STATIC_IMPLEMENTATION=1 -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sNO_BZIP2=1 -sNO_ZLIB=1 --layout=tagged -a --build-type=complete stage I applied the following patch before compilation, without it I don't get the boost_regex-mt.lib and boost_regex_mt.dll, but the libboost_regex-mt.lib. https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=boost-regexdll.patch&pack… This compilation works great, and also the compilation of the freeling library, which generates an exe. But after that, If I try to run the generated exe (with the boost dlls ) I get this error terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<std::runtime_error> > what(): Could not initialize ICU resources Could anyone help me undersanding this error? I suppose it has something to do with some missing ICU files, and I'm sure i make some mistake in the compilation process but I didn't get where is it. I also tried building boost with link=static runtime-link=static, but of course if I do that I don't get the boost_regex-mt.lib but the libbost_regex-mt.lib (and i need the dynamic library for compilation of the freeling library). I now this is not the ICU forum, but if it helps for catching the problem ICU was compiled this way a) apply some diffs from this patch http://devs.openttd.org/~terkhen/libicu/libicu_4_6_mingw32.diff (reference link http://wiki.openttd.org/Compiling_on_MinGW#Compiling_libicu) to make it compile in MinGW (not all cause there are some difference between icu 4.2.1 and 4.6). b) After that run $ ./configure --prefix=/mingw/ --disable-strict --disable-threads $ make install This compilation doesn't generate any dll, only the libs for making boost compile.
