I was hoping that this was a reasonably common issue and there was some clean up function (like u_cleanup()) specifically for the regex library but if not can live with switching off memory loss detection. If you confirm that the backward compatibility is broken for Boost.Serialization #1.40 to #1.47 then *Yes* I would really appreciate any king of patch to address this issue. Looking the Boost.Serialization code, my first feeling would be to patch the implementation of basic_binary_iarchive::load_override(class_id_type & t, int version) for the library_version_type(5) ('5' stands for the library version for the release #1.40) but maybe this patch is too naïve and insufficient. We were facing similar problems jumping from 1.36 to 1.45. Binary archive backwards compatibility is broken in a few places. But: it is fixable. We may provide a patch - is there a TRAK ticket? Boost.Tokenizer / Sep - Compile-time errors ...

Hi, Here is a piece of code that _only_ works when I provide it a hard-coded constant ";": typedef boost::char_separator<char_type_t> sep_type_t; typedef boost::tokenizer<sep_type_t> tokenizer_t; sep_(pa_->separator_.c_str()), t_(messageString,sep_), i_(t_.begin()) It wouldn't work with the separator passed in a variable (pa_->separator.c_str()). Tokenizer wouldn't work even if I initialize a const char* with a ";" and then pass that const char *variable to sep_ above. It gives me the following errors on if I pass separator in a variable: error C2780: 'bool boost::char_separator<Char>::operator ()(InputIterator &,InputIterator,Token &)' : expects 3 arguments - 1 provided Any idea how I can pass it a separator in a variable? Time management using posix time

Hi: This is what is I am trying to achieve. I would like to run the program for 6 minutes, within the six minutes I would like to toggle for 2 minutes data operation and for 1 minute trade operation, so there will be 2 cycle of data operation and 2 cycle of trade operation. I am setting and getting the ptime outside the main program, but what is happening is that the getPtime of the template class is always return the +2 minutes of the current time, that is why diff is never reducing less than 2 minutes, why is that happening, the setter have been instantiated only once. I've reinstalled boost 1.47 making sure that all the multithreaded options were built and am using _beginthreadex() now, but the exact same problem seems to occur where the code snippet below crashes if and only if boost::regex_match() is called. I am not defining BOOST_HAS_THREADS in my code, it is defined automatically although I'm not sure how exactly. Also, as far as I know I am not manually linking to the necessary libraries; all I do is tell MSVC to look in "C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_47_0\stage\lib" for additional libraries so presumably it chooses whichever one it needs. There are no thread or boost-related warnings in the build. Any other ideas? [program_options] Best practices, esp. for multi-app-projects?

I am wondering if there is a recommended way how the boost::program_options library should be integrated in a (relatively) complex project. To be more specific, these are my situation and my requirements: – A C++ project consisting of several applications, which are to share many, but not all options. – The interface to the options used in each app's code should be as boost-unspecific (i. e. abstract) as possible, so that I could later switch to another option library without having to edit much more than one file. – The option data should be somehow encapsulated. After pondering on this task for quite some time, I came up with this: – A single header file "options.h" shared by all the applications, providing a function read_options(int argc, char* argv[], const po::options_description& local_options = 0) , which scans the command line and the usual configuration files* for the common options (which are defined in the same header file, of course) as well asoptional app-specific options, and saves them (next paragraph). *(There is of course the problem of each app's name being part of its config-file's name. I found a solution for this, but I am not sure if it is relevant here. Or is it?) – Regarding the encapsulation, I found any kind of class or struct containing the options (possibly with get and set methods) unsuitable or overkill, as I would have to deal with instantiation and possible problems of multiple instantiation (singleton?). Also, I did not feel the need for the security provided by get and set methods. So what I did is: put all option variables in one namespace, like this: namespace options { int option1; std::string option2; ///... } A namespace has the further great advantage of being extendable after creation. Programme-specific options can be added easily. So in the end, in each programme I only have to do: //optional: define local options namespace options { /* . . . */ } po::options_description my_options /* . . . */ ; //read and save options: options::read_options(argc, argv, my_options) //from now on access the options' values by //options::option1; As I see it, this approach has only two drawbacks: – In each programme's code I have to deal with options twice: 1) declare the storage variables in the options namespace (globally); 2) declare local options_description and call read_options (in the main function). – There is no way to tell if the option variables are in a valid state, unless one is sure that read_options has been called and has set all values (at least to valid default values). I am inclined to tolerate the first issue and resolve the second by: – not using "default_value" in any po::options_description – instead intializing the option variables with their default values. That way, at any time each option variable either stores its default value or the assigned to it from the command line or a configuration file. Oh my, that ended up much longer than I expected. Those of you who read this far: What are your thoughts about using boost::program_options in general and about my particular approach? Regards! Carlos Franke

Units users, I'm sure this is an include I am missing somewhere. I've got a derived physical dimension defined as derived_dimension<volume_dimension,1>, and the corresponding unit<my_dimension,si::system>, however the to_string() of the quantity shows "dimensionless". I am expecting this should be "m^3"? Regards, Michael

Boost::Units users, How would we go about setting up a custom unit with its own name/symbol? We would derive another unit that incorporates this one and probably one of the built-in ones. So we might have something like "volume per custom units", or "custom units per time". * From the sounds of things, we would need to setup a custom base unit with its own info struct defining name() and symbol()? * Probably starting out included in the SI system to get the thing working; plausibly extending into other systems/views as we get further along. I'm making an effort to keep our local usages/extensions to the boost::units framework in the same style/structure, so as to keep things flowing well into our application. I am also using meter as a template, but I'm not sure that's quite the template which would get us what we need? Yes, no, maybe? Any insights? Thank you... Regards, Michael

Building boost::posix_time with nano second support

Hello, I want to use nanoseconds from boost::posix_time but as stated in the reference, you have to define BOOST_DATE_TIME_POSIX_TIME_STD_CONFIG to make that work. Unfortunatelly I don't have any idea where i have to define that variable in the build process. I build boost 1.47.0 like this on osx snow leopard: ./b2 macosx-version=10.6 link=static address-model=32_64 threading=multi stage So, where do I have to define the discussed variable to enable nanosecond support? Offtopic: I also noticed that adress-model=32_64 does not seem to work since all the produced static libs are x86_64 only.- Any ideas about how to fix that? Thank you!

I recall there is a full heavy duty library for lazy evaluation but don't recall its name. But I'm also wondering if there is a specific (lighter weight or already being used within the Boost libraries I'm already using) mechanism for this. —John

access violation with asio

Bizarre problem with range/adaptor/transformed.hpp

I've traced a problem in my program to the inclusion of #include "boost/range/adaptor/transformed.hpp" Nothing is using the features in it (such things are removed from the test case build I'm using to get to the bottom of it). It compiles just as well with or without the line. But if the file is included, the program is broken. If I omit it, then the program works fine. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to clean up the ICU data when it is loaded by boost regex using the optional icu linkage to support Unicode regex's. Help with bind usage

Suppose I have something that expects a general function object that takes three parameters. I have a function that takes one parameter, and I don't care about the other two. How do I get an instance func that when called as func(a,b,c) will end up calling my function foo as foo(a) and throw away the other two? If I use bind, I wind up with a functor that takes fewer arguments than the original. But here I have more.

Likewise, if some_function has a non-const version that takes a "Range&" argument, it works fine too. But in C++0x, rvalue references allow us to kill two birds with one stone and have just one function that accepts both const and non-const references: template <typename Range> typename range_iterator<Range>::type some_function(Range&& r) { ... } However, the template argument deduction rules for rvalue references are different: if the function is called with a "const vector<T>&" parameter, "Range" will be deduced as "const vector<T>&", i.e. the reference is preserved. But now range_iterator gives an error as indicated above, so we have to do something awkward and verbose like this: template <typename Range> typename range_iterator<typename remove_reference<Range>::type>::type some_function(Range&& r) { ... } Could the range metafunctions be modified to accept range reference parameters and remove the reference themselves? Unfortunately, merging the two compilation units in one is not possible, because the compiler (Visual C++ 8.0) goes out of memory while compiling the big unit (process memory grows beyond 2GB). Hi, I'm new to boost and units and hope this is not too trivial. If I try to multiply a quantity with a dimensionless factor like quantity<length> a; quantity<length> b = 2.0 * b; I get compiler errors due to missing operator*. So I worked around this by using quantity<length> b = quantity<dimensionless>(2.0) * b; But I'm wondering if there is a easier and better readable way to do this? Thank you in advance, Marcel

Execution problem moving libraries

Hi everyone. I get a very tricky error with boost.thread. I can compile and execute perfectly a C++ program with the following comand line: g++ -Wall -fPIC -pedantic -g -O3 -DDEBUG -march=native -std=c++0x -lboost_thread -o myExecutable myExecutable.cpp But I have to move this software into another machine, and I thought it was possible to take dynamic libraries with it, in order to properly link them to the executable. I have a structure like the following: package | bin |- myExecutable etc |- libboost_thread.a |- libboost_thread.so -> libbost_thread.so.1.42.0 `- libboost_thread.so.1.42.0 And performing a proper export of LD_LIBRARY_PATH, it seems I obtain a correct link: ldd myExecutable ... libboost_thread.so.1.42.0 => ../etc/libboost_thread.so.1.42.0 (0x002cd000) ... I'm having a peculiar problem with interprocess strings. 0. Initial write succeeds. ShmStringType val; val = "x"; cout << quoteString( x ) << endl; // prints "x" as expected 2. When I overwrite the value with a longer value, the longer value is stored and the length is updated -- but a null character (\0) is inserted at the *old* length. ShmStringType x3( "xxx" ); val = x3; cout << quoteString( val ) << endl; // prints "x\0x" !!! 3. When I write the longer value again, it is stored correctly and there is no \0 in the middle of the string. val = x3; cout << quoteString( val ) << endl; // prints "xxx" as expected 4. Hi, I'd like a const iterator that acts as a proxy by giving access to elements of type A as if they were elements of unrelated type B. In that case I guess the dereference() member function should return a temporary value, right? Would that be a correct implementation of the idea? Now I want to do this for C-Code, which uses if-statements and variables. To do this, I would implement some template function for an if-statement. And some function for an assignment to a variable. Hi, According to the discussion at http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2011/07/69718.php seems like for some non-copyable sequence types, such as indices of Boost.MultiIndex, Boost.Foreach has stopped in GCC 4.6.1 with Boost 1.47 (and did not work in clang++ 2.9 either for Boost 1.46 or Boost 1.47.) Before I apply the boost::foreach::is_noncopyable hack, can the author take a look at this? Release notes for Boost 1.47 indicate that const rvalue detection has been modified in Boost.Foreach, so I wonder whether this situation is something that should be fixed in Boost.Foreach rather than user code. Units developers/user, Preferably, I would like to get after a quantity's value and/or its units in string format, plumb that through to the .NET Managed environment. The managed plumbing is straightforward enough to research, no problem. Can I use boost::units::to_string(q), where q is declared something like quantity<si::length,float>? And then, what can we expect after calling it? For instance, if q is set to 2.5 * meters, then can we expect "2.5 m"? Also, can I set a quantity value apart from its unit? In other words, if I've got a quantity<si::length,float> q again, I'd like to do something like this: q.value(2.5); or: q = 2.5; Or some way that preserves the current quantity units. Thank you... Units developers/users, I need some advice. I am fairly confident boost::units is the way for us to go and support a design- or compile-time unit safe calculations environment. However, now for the tricky business of exposing that functionality to the rest of our application. I am in the midst of trying to do this by exposing some Managed C++ classes, plausibly representing each kind of dimension; to get started with I implemented a base Quantity class, and I am extending that to a Length. I would like to include a quantity<si::length> member, for starters, but I am receiving a build error: Error 2 error C4368: cannot define 'si_l' as a member of managed 'CS::Boost::Units::Dimensions::Length': mixed types are not supported c:\source\safetyvalve2011\cs.calculations.managed\units\Length.h 41 CS.Calculations.Managed This might extend to include a quantity<us::length>, for instance; and so on for other unit systems. Whatever .NET class we expose, this will act like the proxy between the application layer and the calculations layer; we might have Dimension-aware UI controls that work on Length, or Quantity, for instance. That sort of thing. Anyone encountered anything like this before? Or have suggestions how we might overcome this hurdle? I'm puzzling this one through in the meantime... Thank you... Does this mean that there are built-in unit conversions for fundamental units, or even mainstream derived ones by simply including the conversions and performing the appropriate operation? Then it tries to fall back to the noncopyable copy constructor, but that of course is private. If we give the definition of the S move constructor explicitly, all is well because no one is trying to move or copy the noncopyable subobject: struct S : boost::noncopyable { S(S&&) {} }; However, having to define the move constructor explicitly is annoying and a maintenance hazard (e.g. if you add a data member, you have to add it to the move constructor too). If we modify noncopyable to give it a move constructor, the defaulted move constructor now works in derived classes. I think we should either give noncopyable a move constructor, or add a similar class ("noncopyable_but_movable"? - I'm bad with names) that is like noncopyable but also has a move constructor. Multiple Inheritance and enable_shared_from_this

In my code base, we use the wonderful enable_shared_from_this template quite frequently. However, I came across an *interesting* problem while mocking some classes for unit tests. I would also expect the call to get_shared_from_base to fail with a bad_weak_ptr, since it looks like there is only one call in shared_ptr's constructor. I expect that the actual behavior is probably undefined, since it would depend on which association the compiler feels more strongly about: the enable_shared_from_this<derived> from derived or the enable_shared_from_this<base> from base. What I expect is, of course, not happening, which is why I turn to the Boost gurus. *Neither* of the calls work: they both fail with a bad_weak_ptr. Why would this happen? -- - Travis Gockel

Dear boost-users, I am trying to use the compression filters with boost.iostreams. I'm following the instructions here http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/iostreams/doc/index.html?path=7 for building, this is my command line (from libs/iostreams/build): "../../../bjam" -sZLIB_SOURCE="C:/Documents and Settings/bradburnd/My Documents/Development/SDK/zlib/1.2.5" I get the following error: ..\..\..\libs\iostreams\src\zlib.cpp(20) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'zlib.h': No such file or directory I checked my zlib install location and the zlib.h is at the correct location. Based on what I see in the documentation I don't see why this shouldn't be working. Is there something I'm missing? I am using Windows XP, msvc-9.0 boost 1.45 Best Regards Daniel Bradburn

pcap_loop callback with boost::function and boost::bind

Hi, I am writing a statistical protocol analyzer running under Windows with WinPcap. The problem is: The pcap_loop function for starting to capture the packets wants a C style callback function, but I need that callback function to have access to several class variables, so this callback function should be a member function. I know that it is not possible to use a member function directly, because of the additional parameter, the pointer to the class. I thought, maybe I could use boost::function and boost::bind, but I am not sure if my solution is correct, so it would be very nice if some of you guys could just look over it and tell me if this is a good way to do this. This is my code for starting the capture: void MyClass::startCapturing() { boost::function < void (u_char *, const struct pcap_pkthdr *, const u_char *) > f; f = boost::bind(&MyClass::packetHandler, this, _1, _2, _3); pcap_handler p = *(f.target<pcap_handler>()); pcap_loop(hnd, 0, p, NULL); } This the callback function I want pcap_loop to call: void MyClass::packetHandler(u_char *param, const struct pcap_pkthdr *header, const u_char *pkt_data) { /* Do something with the packet.. */ } And this is the signature of the callback argument in the pcap_loop function, as defined in pcap.h: typedef void(*) pcap_handler(u_char *param, const struct pcap_pkthdr *pkt_header, const u_char *pkt_data) If you have an alternative, I would be glad to hear it! I'm using the current Boost library on Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. I'm getting a warning on line 121 of transform_iterator.hpp, complaining "returning address of local variable or temporary". The line in question is the body of this function: typename super_t::reference dereference() const { return m_f(*this->base()); } My m_f supplied to the template is ordinary enough; it returns a value. The exact same situation in a unit test gives no complaint! Any idea what this is all about?

Hi everyone! I'm begginers to use bjam and boost. I've built python-extension. I successfully compiled it by bjam. My Jamroot file like this: use-project boost : ../../.. ; project : requirements <library>/boost/python//boost_python ; python-extension myext : myext.cpp ; And I have custom shared library with extra functions . Now I'm trying to use extra functions in python library. My questions is how put linker options in bjam project? Something like this: -L/path/to/my/library/lib64/ -lmylib.0.1 If I append include options for a file, my MyLib.h is found but linker does not find library itself. I append like this: python-extension myext : myext.cpp <include>/path/to/my/library/include; I've tried to use following # <library-path>/path/to/my/library/lib64/ # <library-file>mylib.0.1.so but with these options my extension is not compiled. Boost Shared Memory Compilation Issue

What an great library! I am trying to extend one of the shared memory examples but I am getting a compilation error. Basically I have added a vector of char_strings to the complex object and added a method to add a string to the vector. [Boost][Serialization] ASSERT triggered during reading 1.40 binary archive w/ Boost 1.47

Hello Booster, We are trying to jump from Boost 1.40 to Boost 1.47 but we are facing an issue: an ASSERT is raised in debug mode when reading back binary archive generated by Boost.Serialization 1.40 with the Boost.Serialization 1.47. This ASSERT is at line 116 in basic_archive.hpp: BOOST_ASSERT(t_ <= boost::integer_traits<base_type>::const_max) And it occurs with the following platform: MSVC 8.0 and Windows XP/32bits or Win7/64bits. Looking at the load_override and save_override implementations for class_id_type in #1.40, they seem loading and saving an 'int_least16_t' (equiv. to a short for our platform) while load_override(class_id_type) for #1.47 attempts to read an 'int' (file: basic_binary_iarchive.hpp @ line 98). My questions are: - This assert suggests that we can't read back previous binary archives (#1.40 at least) with Boost.Serialization 1.47, is this a known pending issue for Boost.Serialization? - If yes, how we can manage that and how we can complete the migration to 1.47 in our case (it should be noted that we must be able to read back our 1.40 binary archives)? Is there any known patch for this problem? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. It seems that the CLANG compiler that is used for Mac development, Apple LLVM 2.1, is missing _some_ of the TR1 headers. For example, it has <array>, but does not find <type_traits>. If the |boost-install-path/boost/tr1/tr1 is put first in the include path, is it set up to use the native stuff that does exist, and Boost for the rest? What about the per-feature usage that is used within the library, <boost/tr1/xxxxx.hpp> ? Will that bring in the native <array>, but the Boost type_traits.hpp? Any general suggestions on writing portable code on the Mac that will use TR1 and whatever newer features are available? Thanks, —John |

[Boost.Serialization] Dealing with offsets

Dear Boost users/devs, Suppose i have a simulator S: R^n ---> R such that each run is during about 1 hour. Even using Boost.MPI, is expensive to run thousands of simulations all the time. To solve this problem, i'm wondering in use Boost.Serialization to store the pairs inputs/output in a boost::serialization::binary_archive and check before run if those inputs had an associated output already. By reading the Boost.Serialization docs, i can't found a way to deal with offsets in the archive, in really i don't know if it's possible. My intention is to get an archive like: 1.3, 2.5, ..., 4.6 0.1, 4.3, ..., 5.0 ... ... 123445 1234542 9893 1234 ... and skip the first rows, which are the inputs, to get the associated outputs. If you have any advice to solve this or know another more appropriate approach for this restart feature, please let me know. The second option i have in mind is work with C++ file streams and save the floating points by using the low-level std::fstream::read std::fstream::write functions. Best regards, Júlio.

Hi: I am just getting to know boost library, I was able to execute the lambda program mentioned in the documentation without any problem. Now I am trying out with chrono, so I am doing the following, I am getting an error. #include <boost/chrono/chrono.hpp> Same is true for posix_time.hpp as well, the error says Cannot open include library file: 'boost/chrono/chrono.hpp' No such file or directory, but it is not complaining when I am using lambda. Hi, I am looking for a good logging library, I very like boost libraries and almost all my C++ projects use it. So the Boost.Log is the first choice I am considering. But Boost.Log is accepted for a long time and still not ship with latest Boost library. I heard about it is developing v2. I am not sure about its API will change a lot or not. If I use Boost.Log v1 now, would that be painful to upgrade to final Boost.Log that ships with Boost library? And is Boost.Log v1 efficient enough or stable enough just like other boost libraries? (I concern about that because it is not ship with boost release for a long time). Boost::units users, How do I get at the unit symbol or name? I think this type thing would be essential when receiving and parsing textual quantities from a client side application. We have a somewhat tricky cross-compile, and I'm hoping I can get some feedback to help me be sure that I'm doing this right. In my user-config.jam, I (think I) need to put the following line: Using gcc : 4.5.1 : : "/path/to/target/compiler" <compileflags> -I/path/to/sdk/includes <cxxflags> -std=c++0x <cflags> -Wall -march=atom Does that sound right? Does boost depend on standard precompiled libraries like libstdc++.so? I've been bit by having the system crash hard in different places, and I suspect that sometimes this is caused by the fact that the host is i686 linux and the target is an atom-based SoC with custom linux libraries. Boost wants to pull them from the host, so I need to tell it everything it should NOT pull silently. Correct? Hello, I play with new boost geometry library. There is thing that I don't understand, possible it is bug. I'm trying to register segment concept. It is struct with fields named "point1" and "point2", that represents endpoints of this segment. I've specified tag, point_type, indexed_access for this struct. And length works fine. But intersection requires that this struct contains fields named "first" and "second". I'm new to this library, so I don't know whether it is bug in library or my code. [Serialization] Writing an old version of a class

I sent this 2 days ago, and it appears in the archives, but I never received it back from the list and there have been no replies, so I am posting it again. Using boost serialization, I would like to be able to write an old version of a class, so that I can save data in an "old" format to allow other users with an old version of my program to read the file. I see from the archives that this has come up before, and Robert Ramey indicated it was doable and on the todo list, but I don't see it in the release notes or documentation. [multiindex] Ordered index corruption

Hi All, I have a problem with a multiindex ordered_non_unique index becoming corrupted :( I am working with a multiindex that stores class objects of type Individual: class Individual { double I_; double id_; public: double getId() const; double getI() const; void setId(const std::string id); void setI(const double I); } boost::multi_index_container< Individual, indexed_by< random_access< tag<bySeq> >, hashed_unique< tag<byId>, const_mem_fun<Individual,string,&Individual::getId> >, ordered_non_unique<tag<byI>, const_mem_fun<Individual,double,&Individual::getI> > > > I have an algorithm that works on these data, using Individual::I to calculate a summary value across the whole dataset. An Individual i is then chosen at random, and i.I updated using the multiindex::modify method with a functor: struct modifyI { modifyI(double newI) : newI_(newI) {} void operator()(Individual& i) { i.setI(newI_); } private: double newI_; }; This calculation is then repeated many times. The actual calculation is done in parallel using MPI (Boost::MPI on top of OpenMPI), with the final reduction being broadcast to all processes. This enables each processor to make the same change to its copy of the multiindex. In *theory* this should mean that each process has a complete replicate of the multiindex. However, I am finding that the ordered_non_unique index is becoming corrupted in that the ordering (strict less than on Individual::I) gets messed up for a few (c. 2 or 3) of the elements. Essentially, it appears that small blocks of the index get swapped round. This is not occurring simultaneously on all processes, which is odd because the same multiindex::modify method is called for each process with the same arguments. Obviously such tool to check pointer would be really slow or too slow for release codes since we want to check pointer location at each pointer access, read or write. In order to check how does boost::python works with long numbers I found this snippet of code (found it on the boost documentation page - http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/python/doc/v2/long.html) namespace python = boost::python; // compute a factorial without overflowing python::long_ fact(long n) { if (n == 0) return python::long_(1); else return n * fact(n - 1); // here points the compiler } However, I cannot compile it - the compiler says "error: conversion from ‘boost::python::api::object’ to non-scalar type ‘boost::python::long_’ requested", pointing to the line marked. Hi all, As a part of a project I'm writing a logger function. This logger function sends an e-mail when the program wants to log something. Since it has happened that the SMTP server was non responsive, I've decided to do the sending of the mails in a separate thread. This thread reads messages from an std::deque which is filled by the logging function. This is where it goes wrong, the application crashes with an error: /usr/include/boost/thread/pthread/mutex.hpp:45: boost::mutex::~mutex(): Assertion `!pthread_mutex_destroy(&m)' failed. The destructor merely calls an interrupt on the thread and then joins it: mQueueThread.interrupt(); mQueueThread.join(); In the main program, I use multiple different classes which make use of boost threading and mutex as well, could this cause this behaviour? Not calling the destructor of the logger object results in no errors, as does using the logger object and not doing anything else. My guess is I am doing something very wrong, or there is a bug in the threading library when using multiple threads divided over several classes. boost::units implicit conversions

Boost::units users, I have gotten my feet wet with boost::units over the past several days and starting to get the hang of it, dimensions, quantities, and units, and so forth. Now I would like to start thinking more in terms of how these units-based calculations should be used by the rest of our application. Of primary concern is to receive a quantity of dimension from the application in a specified unit and to be able to perform the calculations. One concept I've been wondering about is whether there is any value in converting units to a base unit for purposes of IPC (interprocess communication), saving to or loading from files, or that sort of thing. In this way we will know that if we see a quantity of length dimension, for instance, we can always expect the value to be presented in terms of, let's say, meters. My question concerning calculations is something along these lines: how does boost::units treat a quantity<dimension> when facilitating dimensioned calculations? Or is it on us as developers to ensure that an appropriate unit-conversion is taking place somewhere along the way when we are ready to interpret the result for display, report, or whatever? Let me know if I can clarify at all, because I am a little fuzzy along these lines at the moment. Thank you... Regards, Michael

Boost::units developers / users, I need to specify a U.S. Barrel (bbl) for purposes of performing conversions and so forth. First, does this definition look about right? Second, how does one propose an addition to the units code base? Note, I'm not quite sure how the 2^3 scaling from gallon to pints works in terms of scaling from barrel to gallons, or pints for that matter, so I am assuming that gallon can be the base unit for barrel and call it good. Boost.Iterator questions

Consider something similar to what Glib::ustring does, only better made. If I have a sequence of characters (say, in a normal std::string) and want to use an adaptor to decode UTF-8 code points, the resulting adapted iterator returns a different type (element is char32_t), not an lvalue, and consumes a variable number of underlying elements. It's not just a transform_iterator because it consumes a variable number of underlying elements. It's not writable because a new value might encode a different number of underlying elements than the one it is replacing. I think I need to implement it directly from iterator_facade, not one of the more specialized classes already provided. Am I mistaken? What is the traversal type? Random access is _possible_ just not efficient. To move forward n locations it has to increment n times. ++ and −− are fine. There is indeed a well defined distance between two iterators, but I don't want to encourage that kind of thing and hide the inefficiency. But, I see that relational operators are defined for random access (only), not for bidirectional? Why is that? Note that relational operators for the proposed type _are_ efficient, as it can defer to the underlying iterator. I knows which is greater, just not by how much exactly. The template argument for Difference, in the tutorial, mentions "distance between any two addresses in memory". But the distance between two locations is not the same as the difference in bytes. Is this being implied? After all, the example is a linked list and the distance from one node to another, in hops, has no relation to the address at all. Is Difference something I need to worry about?

Use Boost thread and store results of function into object's local variable.

Hello. I'm a new to Boost and the listserv so please forgive my ignorance if my question is obvious. I have found the Boost documentation and example difficult to use for my needs (perhaps I'm just not using the correct packages). I have a vector of objects each of which needs to do so calculations. Each vector element can run independently and doesn't rely on anything other than its own private variables. I'd like to launch N threads (where N can vary from 1...8 let's say) and pass to each thread 1 element of the vector. Within the threads, each object crunches its numbers and stores its result in its local variable. I've got some code here but it won't compile. I get this error message: "cannot call member function ‘void PSMClass::process()’ without object" I think the problem is that I'm not passing the vector element itself but rather a pointer to it (?). Perhaps this isn't the best approach, I don't know. Can anyone help me out? Hello, The boost::istream_range function currently takes its parameter by lvalue reference (i.e. istream&). Can this be changed to rvalue reference (istream&&)? This way one can write things like: vector<T> v; push_back(v, istream_range<T>(ifstream("some_file.txt"))); Regards, Nate.

boost::units primer explained / conversion factors required

Okay, here's what we need to get at, for starters. And maybe an illustration or three and a little exchange will go a long way towards helping my better comprehend units. I'm starting with a set of SI calculations for oil and gas constants calculations. Eventually we will need to accommodate US units as well. But not quite yet. We need to get at a calculation involving Pressure Gradient, which ends up being metric::bar/si::meter (bars over meters) in specific units, or I suppose si::pressure/si::length might also work. Then we need to get after Fluid Density, which ends up being si::kilogram/si:meter^3 (kilograms over cubic meters) in specific units, or I suppose si::mass/si::meter^3 (I don't know what this looks like in terms of boost::units, maybe one of the volumes?), or perhaps make use of mass_density? We take all that and divide Pressure Gradient by Fluid Density to arrive at what we hope will be the the conversion factor: 0.0000981. Which we could specify that as a constant, but I like proving it through the software first (plausibly once) when we ask for it. Similar type calculations would follow for US units involving gallons, cubic inches, inches, and inches per foot, along these lines. So I need some examples will spell it out for me. The learning curve using boost::units is just too steep for me right now without it. Any tips or pointers along these lines would be much appreciated. Thank you, Michael

[serialization] Memory leaks even with shared_ptrs

Hi All, Sorry for posting twice in two days, but I'm having lots of trouble getting this right. Robert points out in the bus route example that the memory leaks can be solved using shared_ptrs (bottom of this page: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/doc/tutorial.html#e… ) I have a basic example (below), quite like the bus route, that has memory leaks when using raw pointers. Enums to/from Strings

Any thoughts or pointers on the best way to support rendering and parsing of enumerated constants? Some only need to be printed, as for debug messages. Others need to be parsed as well, such as from a configuration file. I'm thinking the solution should provide for uniform access to the conversion including existing uses such as feeding an enumeration constant to Boost.Format and having it automatically render as the string.

Using thread library in MFC DLL causes assertion failure

Hi everybody, I am working on a MFC DLL project with Visual Studio 2010. Since I have started to use the boost thread library in my DLL I get error messages, when from another program I try to dynamically load the DLL. I recreated the problem, apparently the errors occur when from any MFC DLL project is included one header of the thread library (I tried with barrier.hpp, condition_variable.hpp and thread.hpp). Below is shown what the messages look like: 1. Debug assertion failed! Program: ... File: ...\dllinit.cpp Line: 607 2. then I press ignore... 3. Debug assertion failed! Program: ... File: ...\dllmodul.cpp Line: 135 4. then I press ignore and the program correctly goes on with its execution... I have found an older thread in which was explained a very similar issue: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/49747 but apparently nothing has been fixed since that time. I hope somebody has a suggestion.

Boost Units users, I need to find a *really* good boost::units primer to get me started. we've got some units-based calculations that need to be developed and I hope to make use of boost in order to facilitate those calculations taking place. so far what I am thinking of as a basic type calculation isn't panning out quite right, more likely I am failing to grasp just what I need to do to string together the quantities in accordance with the units framework which allows the calculations to happen properly... Lock-free data structures can be accessed by multiple threads without the necessity of blocking synchronization primitives such as guards. Lock-free data structures can be used in real-time systems, where blocking algorithms may lead to high worst-case execution times, to avoid priority inversion, or to increase the scalability for multi-processor machines. [Serialization] getting version of items stored in STL collection

I'm converting parts of a program to use boost::shared_ptr. I have a vector of pointers to objects std::vector<Object*> which now becomes std::vector<ObjectPtr> where ObjectPtr = make_shared<Object>(). I must support archives (XML files) created previously. Boost::serialization looks after saving STL collections very nicely. However, now, in reading a file, I need to determine the item_version in the collection so I can read in a vector of Object* or ObjectPtr. I also need to change the item_version when saving new files to indicate ObjectPtrs are being saved. I've dug through the documentation and source for hours but can't find anything that I can use (my own limitations perhaps?). This vector is NOT a class member and so class versioning does not apply unfortunately. Also, I am using bespoke load/save functions and NOT the serialize(Archive& ar, const unsigned int version) which would avoid this problem (I posted about this before - due to move from MFC to boost and mix of Doc/View architecture). I realize now I should have put a class version member of the MyAppDoc file structure which would be read in first. This would save all the pain. Hello I'm having a bit of trouble with something and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out. I'm using boost interprocess. Linking error in boost program options under Windows

I'm linking to boost programming options under windows. I get the following linker error: miind.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static unsigned int const boost::program_options::options_description::m_default_line_length" I am using the BoostPro installer version for boost 1.47 under windows XP using Visual Studio 10. I link against: boost_program_options-vc100-mt-gd-1_47.lib in Debug mode. If I don't link against it I get a lot more missing symbols, so it's not simply a matter of forgetting to the boost program options library. The problem occurs in the Debug and Release version. The same code compiles under Linux. Marc
