Why is asio clobbering my file before it can be sent?

I've used the same boilerplate boost::asio code for years to send a plain text file "foo.txt" from a server back to a client and it has always worked fine. Suddenly for no apparent reason, the same code I've always used with no problems now deletes the contents of foo.txt before it can actually be sent to the client. I'm creating foo.txt with a different program now, but I don't see how that could make any difference on Win32. Below is the relevant part of the code just before I use boost::asio::write to send the contents of foo.txt back to the client. As shown by the two printf statements, the contents of the file are somehow lost when the file name and size are sent to the client. Anyone know what's going on? Is there any other information I can provide to shed light on the problem? [IOStreams] Is such a behaviour considered as bug

Hello *, I really enjoyed working with Iostreams, while testing some of my components. Using IOStreams with array_device seemed to be a very powerfull approach to test some of my stream based algorithms. But currently I face some issues which seem to be really weired to me. I produced some code snippet to better explain it. I've tried all the possible reconfigurations I can think of, but this error happens with the boostpro installs, with Boost built unchanged from the 1.47 distribution, and with Boost rebuilt with /Zwchar_t- set in msvc.jam. Is there a way to solve this? The issue originally appears when trying to build code from another library -- but this is a minimal repro it with just boost code, so I think it's a Boost problem, unless I'm missing something. thanks, -- dan

[Regex | Xpressive] Efficiently "grepping" large files

Hello, I am looking into Boost.Regex and Boost.Xpressive for implementing grep-like functionality on large files. More specifically I want to check whether a file contains a match for an expression which does not need that much context (a few KB). regex_search and BidirectionalIterators for the whole file work, but there is a complication: I want to do other operations on the file in other threads in parallel (such as calculating hashes and extracting other data). Given that this is mostly I/O bound I would like to avoid rereading portions of the file as much as possible. My idea was to implement a circular buffer which may block the workers (and reading, if data is ever read faster than analyzed). The circular buffer needs to know when old data is no longer required, though, that is regex_search no longer works on it or backtracks into it. The best idea so far is to read blocks of data and do slightly overlapped calls of regex_search on those blocks. This approach has got at least two problems: 1) Matches and context are potentially limited to the size of the overlap. 2) Semantics of the match might be changed if I choose an arbitrary cut for the overlap (e.g. ^ and $ might change because I cut the beginning or end of a line) I would not mind to specify a maximum context of a few KB to maybe 1 MB, but I do not want to change semantics. Is there a better approach? I was thinking about supplying some intelligent iterators, but Regex/Xpressive might leave copies around longer than I anticipate, such that I still cannot decide where they are and how far they may still backtrack. If that's not really possible with the boost libraries I would be interested in alternatives, too. I am already considering looking into some grep implementations. Thanks in advance! Thomas Luzat

cross-compiling didn't work with boost:filesystem

Hi, I developed a code on Linux, and the only library that I used was boost:filesystem. I was very happy with the code on Linux, and it never gave me a problem and never broke on me, I tried it on different scenarios and different file types, and I had never issue with boost::filesystem::remove(&path) function. But, now, I needed my code on a Mac machine (but I don't have a Mac) so I borrowed my friend's Mac, and installed xcode, and installed boost_1.47, and I didn't get a single error or warning when installing these packages. As a test, I even ran some simple filesystem examples that were provided. and they all passed. I even used the same "make" file that I had on linux, and it worked great on Mac. (no warnings when compiled) But, when I tried to run my code, I was getting errors with ::remove functions. I am not sure, but I think part of it was because I may have read-only permission on some of the files, and maybe that is why it complained, although I never had this problem in Linux. Also, another part of it could be because of the file naming with white space between its characters: (e.g. "my document.txt" because of this space). I don't know, but I thought that "boost::filesystem" should be independent of the developing platform, and that I could be fairly confident that if it works on one platform (Linux), it should be working on another one (Mac). Any idea, what I am doing wrong, and how this can be fixed? thanks, RB

ublas bug?

Hi, I was just wondering if there is a bug in ublas (boost version 1.47): when I use the following code (in debug mode): ublas::matrix<double> m; ublas::matrix<double> m2; m2 = m; this compiles in MSVC 10, but produces a runtime error "Expression: invalid null pointer". I had a look at some of the underlying ublas code, and found that default initialisation of matrices makes the underlying data pointer "data_" be set to NULL, and that when one matrix is copied to another, std::copy is invoked to copy one data_ to the other. However, I looked at the MSVC std::copy definition, and it seems to check for NULLness of the pointers. [Container] Forward declaration of movable types

Hi, I am evaluating container library by Ion Gaztanaga. I know it is not officially a part of boost yet but I didn't know where else to ask this question. My problem: If there is a movable class 'MyMovable' (I use boost.move) it can be stored without unnecessary copies in move-aware vector that is declared like so: vector<MyMovable> movables; which is very cool until this vector is suppose be a member of other class like: //widget.hpp class Widget { vector<MyMovable> movables_; }; which is not cool at all because now widget.hpp must include my_movable.hpp as opposed to just forward declaring it if it stored say vector<shared_ptr<MyMovable>> which in turn makes movability of MyMovable rather useless. I guess my question is: how can one take advantage of move semantics in context of member containers without adding unnecessary class dependencies? Regards, Simon

Environment: Boost1.47 + Microsoft HPC 2008 SDK I find Delta Stepping Dijkstra and Crauser Dijkstra in boost, and both of them are slower than sequential dijkstra in boost. (About 10 times slower. I used 10 graphs, the biggest graph contains 10 million nodes and 10 million edges) Q1: I wonder why the parallel dijkstra is slower than sequential version? Q2: Can I adjust the number of threads that Delta Stepping used? (For exemple, I want it use 1, 2, 3, 4 threads respectively. And Can I make it sequential version?) So... If I want to build boost from a straight up Windows Command Prompt in the Visual Studio environment, the key is that we run the VCVARSALL.BAT file prior to running the bootstrap, etc, etc? boost multithread use all cores in parallel ?

Hi, How to make sure that a multithreaded C++ program is run by ALL cores on a multicore server to do computing in parallel physically (not logically). I have a multicore server, which has 24 CPUs, each of which has 6 cores. It is Intel Xeon X5650 2.67GHz cpu cores : 6 (support 6 threads) cpu MHz : 1596.000 totally, I have 24 * 6 = 144 cores. I designed a multithreaded C++ program with boost/thread. How to make sure that my program is run by all 144 cores ? Any help is really appreciated. thanks

iterator_adaptor : const and regular form

I wrote an iterator by deriving from the boost::iterator_adaptor template. Now I need the const_iterator for my collection, too. The instructions for iterator_adaptor are not clear, but the implication is that I should transfer what I read from iterator_facade. So, is using a const type for the Value (the 3rd template argument) all it takes to write a proper const_iterator? (assuming the functions I supply are proper, too) So, I can just write my iterator as a template of T, passing T through as Value to the iterator_adaptor base class, and then instantiate _that_ with my value type and with const value type to make iterator and const_iterator respectively, right? —John

[Range] Why adaptor stores iterator_range instead of its underlying range?

Hi, I've had this question for a long time, but I still haven't seen others asked the same question. I wonder what's the rationale for range adaptor holding an iterator_range, instead of storing the underlying range (by reference when the range is a container) and calculating begin() and end() on the fly. For C++11 code, it's not unusual to store the temporary expression aside and use it more than once. E.g. vector<int> v = {1, 2, 3}; auto view = v | filtered(...); do_something(view); v.push_back(4); // X do_something(view); Above code is broken since 'v''s iterator is invalidated after X. Could anybody shed some light on this matter?

boost timer

Hello, I would like to calculate the runtime of my algorithms. I have written a MPI based algorithms and must determine the duration of the algorithm on each CPU. I would like to show the really duration, which is based on Amdahls law, so I need a "exactly" timer. Can I use the Boost Timer / Boost MPI Timer to calculate the duration between start and end of my algorithm? On large datasets I think the timer is a good choice. Is the resolution of the timer object just enough for small amounts of data? I would like to do this: timer t; run_algorithm; std::cout << t.elapsed << std::endl; Is a timer object a good choice to determine runtime structure or do you a better structure? Thanks Phil

Compiler warnings when compiling property_tree v1.47.0

Hello Users, I am using the Intel compiler v12.0.1029.2010 on Windows 7 x64 and when compiling the property_tree (v1.47.0) I get lots of warnings reported: infoStruct.cpp ..\..\Includes\boost/mpl/aux_/has_begin.hpp(20): warning #2586: 'test' : decorated name length exceeded, name was truncated BOOST_MPL_HAS_XXX_TRAIT_NAMED_DEF(has_begin, begin, true) This is one of many similar warnings generated and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how this can be solved. The code compiles of course and the library builds but I'd rather not have them at all. I would appreciate your comments on this thanks. -- Bill

[serialization] bad cast for shared library compiled by g++ with visibility=hidden

Hello, I am working on a C++ shared library (DLL) that should have a hierarchy of serializable classes using fixed archive format. The serialize template methods of the classes are all instantiated in the DLL, the idea is the library clients should be able to load/save derived objects using shared_ptr<Base>, without an explicit knowledge of the Derived classes. Everything seems to work fine if I build the shared library with g++ using the default visibility option (i.e., every function in the DLL is exported). However, if I compile the code with "-fvisibility=hidden" the test program crashes with bad_cast exception, whenever it tries to serialize a derived object stored as a shared_ptr<Base>. Strangely, if I build the library with NDEBUG defined, the code works fine. The difference seems to be in serialization/smart_cast.hpp which uses different cast code with the NDEBUG macro defined. Any idea why is this happening? Is serialization supported for the shared libraries build with g++ -fvisibility=hidden option? I am using g++ 4.4.3 and the Boost libraries 1.40. Attached is a minimum example where the testlib.hpp and testlib.cpp are the shared library and testprg.cpp is the test program. The code can be built with the attached Makefile as follows: (a) make clean runtest - default g++ visibility, test program works (b) make clean runtest VISIBILITY=1 - builds the library with -fvisibility=hidden, test program fails with the bad_cast exception (c) make clean runtest VISIBILITY=1 NDEBUG=1 - builds the library with -fvisibility=hidden and NDEBUG defined. test program works. Hi all, I am writing some code which uses MPL and fusion together, and in general I am happy with their interoperability. However, I have stumbled on a few areas in which functionality I expected was missing, or where expressions I expected to work did not. All of these issues have workarounds, but I'd appreciate some input on whether the problem is with the libraries, or with my expectations. 1. mpl::pair and fusion::pair Fusion sequences are conforming MPL sequences, and MPL sequences can be transmuted into fusion sequences. However, the same is not true of their pair classes. I feel that fusion::pair ought to conform to some "MPL pair" concept such that: - I can access its types by the same 'first' and 'second' members as in mpl::pair - mpl::first and mpl::second metafunctions should work against it For instance, I'd like to be able to extract a sequence of key types from a map: // OK! typedef mpl::map<mpl::pair<int, char>, mpl::pair<bool, short> > m1; typedef mpl::transform< m1, mpl::first<mpl::placeholders::_1>, mpl::back_inserter<mpl::vector<> > >::type keys1; // Not OK! typedef fusion::map<fusion::pair<int, char>, fusion::pair<bool, short> > m2; typedef mpl::transform< m2, mpl::first<mpl::placeholders::_1>, mpl::back_inserter<mpl::vector<> > >::type keys2; // OK, but requires different code for mpl and fusion maps typedef mpl::transform< m2, fusion::result_of::first<mpl::placeholders::_1>, mpl::back_inserter<mpl::vector<> > >::type keys3; Also, I feel there should be a canned way to translate mpl::pair into fusion::pair. fusion::result_of::as_pair? 2. mpl::map and fusion::map This code works nicely: typedef mpl::vector<int, char, bool> v1; typedef fusion::result_of::as_vector<v1>::type v2; v2 v(1, 'a', false); However, this does not: typedef mpl::map<mpl::pair<int, char>, mpl::pair<bool, short> > m1; typedef fusion::result_of::as_map<m1>::type m2; m2 m('a', 3); The type 'm2' ends up as fusion::map<mpl::pair<int, char>, mpl::pair<bool, short> >, which clearly is no good. I feel that as_map should automatically translate mpl::pair to fusion::pair so that the result is a usable container. Please let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree, or whether these seem like useful features to anyone else. I've always wondered why std::vector gives you so many ways to assign values to it, but so few to append items, as personally I want to append items much more often than totally change a vector's contents. Issues with brent_find_minima

I must be missing something: the following program doesn't seem to find the right minimum (boost 1.47.0). double f(double x) { return x * cos(x); } int main(int argc, char** argv) { cout << brent_find_minima(f, 3.0, 4.0, 1e-8) << endl; return 0; } I get: 4 -2.61457 But I think the minimum is -3.28837 at x = 3.42562. Did I miss something in calling brent_find_minima?? Also, this function should be called "brent_find_minimum" since it finds a single minimum, IMHO. Hi all boost users, We have been using boost.serialization for years. We want to move from 1.33 to 1.47 and encountered a problem. Many of our classes are abstract, and the derived are defined with BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID. At one point in time, a new class (B) was added that derives from a class that was defined with the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID macro (A). It all worked well in 1.33. In 1.47, when we get to de-serialize class A, we get an exception of unregistered class. We traced it down, and found out that if we remove the derived class (B), it works fine, but this is not an option, and then the derived class (B) cannot be de-serialized from the file... If there any way to bypass this problem? was there a change made that broke this functionality? Many Thanks! Ron

[serialization] overloading load_construct_data: no accessible constructor at all

Hey, so I'm using the boost::serialization library, and I'm trying to override how a class is constructed, since it has no default constructor. This is demonstrated here<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/doc/serialization.h…>. To me it appears the function ONLY takes the `class* t` and then sets it to point to a newly constructed object. If I'm wrong, this is definitely the source of my error. However, the only way to construct my class is by using another classes `create()` function, meaning I need to stray from the code in the example (this is stated in the boost::serialization namespace): `::new(t)my_class(attribute);` I tried simply calling the create function and setting `t` equal to the returned pointer, but this doesn't seem to work because right after the `load_construct_data function`, and in the `serialization function`, the given `myClass&` is not the same as what I set 't' to. *How do I do whatever ::new(t) is doing so the object created using the create function follows through into the serialize/other functions?* [1]: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/doc/serialization.h…

JSON Property file reader compile problem

I'm trying to use the boost property tree to read a json file. I'm using 1.46 on gcc 4.6 (Fedora 15). I'm also running on Eclipse (Indigo) which is relevant for something I mention below. Here's the issue . I have a JSON file which has an array of parameters which looks something like: { "config": { "modules": [ { "name": "somename0", "param1": "someparam", "param2":"someotherparm" }, { "name": "somename1", "param1": "someparam", "param2":"someotherparm" }, { "name": "somename2", "param1": "someparam", "param2":"someotherparm" } ] } } So, I wrote the following code (Note that I can't use boost:FOR_EACH because of some bug in eclipse (#332278) which causes an error-or so I believe): ptree v = pt.get<ptree>("config.modules"); for (ptree::iterator it = v.begin() ; it != v.end ; ++it) { ptree module = ???; } The first two lines seem to compile fine. I'm assuming that what I get from v is the "root" ptree (the parent) for the various "modules" objects and that the iterator will walk through them. However, I've tried all sorts of things trying to get at the module data (e.g., it->second, (*it)->second, ...) and clearly I don't know what it is I need to tell the compiler I want. All I get are compile errors. The compiler is giving me no hints as to what I need to tell it. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here? Thanks Scott

[filesystem] misidentifies file type on Solaris x86 64-bit

Hello, I'm using Boost 1.46.1 with filesystem v3. Code that I've been running successfully on Windows, Linux and FreeBSD started producing very mysterious results on Solaris. I boiled it down to this: boost::filesystem will not identify a directory as a directory. program_options: accepting NaNs for doubles

Hi all, program_options does not accept NaN or Inf as valid double input. For example, the following sequence modifies the "Getting Started" first.cpp [1] to accept double input: cp $BOOST_SOURCE/libs/program_options/example/first.cpp . perl -pi -e 's/<int>/<double>/;' first.cpp LDFLAGS="-lboost_program_options" make first # ...or whatever The modified example indeed barfs on NaN or Inf input: $ ./first --compression=5.5 Compression level was set to 5.5. $ ./first --compression=Inf error: in option 'compression': invalid option value 'Inf' $ ./first --compression=NaN error: in option 'compression': invalid option value 'NaN' Two questions: 1) Does this count as a bug? 'std::cin >> foo' doesn't grok Inf or NaNs (on my system anyhow) but methods like strtod() do. Users providing explicit infinities or not-a-numbers as options parameters likely don't do so accidentally. This Inf/NaN behavior is not mentioned in the active tickets. 2) Can anyone suggest a workaround (shy of using string-based parameters and calling strtod myself)? I am using Boost test library now and find there are several libraries there: libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw46-1_47.a libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw46-mt-1_47.a libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw46-s-1_47.a what are differences between the 3 libraies (with "s", or with "mt", or no "mt" and "s")? also, for VC++ compiler, there is: boost_unit_test_framework-vc100-mt-1_47.dll but MinGW have: libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw46-mt-1_47.dll libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw46-1_47.dll Why MinGW have more?

[boost-build] Dynamic linking dependency propagation on mac os x

Dear list, i'm trying to compile an existing project which compiles fine on Windows (where we link statically) and linux (where linking is default, i.e. dynamic) on Mac OS X (10.7). I'm essentially trying to use the same configuration as on linux, since darwin ~ gcc… The project makes use of (and therefore links to) several boost libraries including system, filesystem, serialization,… We create several libraries which depend upon each other: - lib1depends on serialization,filesystem,… - lib2 depends on lib1 - lib3 depends on lib1 and lib2 -> here's the first problem: the (implicit) dependence on system, filesystem and serialization is not automatically resolved anymore. At least, the linker complains about missing symbols, since the "g++"-command-line doesn't include the libraries. I could solve that by adding those libraries to the requirements with <use>/boost/serialization, etc. -lib4 depends on lib3 -> here's the real problem: again, the implicit dependence on (specifically) lib1 and the boost-libs is lost. I can use the same trick as before with the boost-libs, but whatever I do, I cannot make the "lib1.dylib" appear in the "g++" command-line. When I execute the command by hand - adding lib1.dylib - it executes fine & the linker does not complain. How/why does that happen? My user-config.jam simply consists of: using darwin : : : <compileflags>-DBOOST_WAVE_SUPPORT_THREADING=0 ; What else do I need to configure differently on Mac OS X? Windows Installer Build

Hi, I installed Boost 1.47 using Windows Installer. I have Visual C++ 2010 Express installed and I installed Platform SDK for 2003 and Windows Driver Kit, that give me MFC/ATL, etc., separately. However, I have to set the directories in each project before I build anything otherwise the VC++ 2010 picks up the Windows SDK 7.0 that gets installed by default by Visual C++ 2010 Express. So Boost installer, I suspect, too picked up the wrong SDK, Windows SDK 7, directories instead of the those of the platform SDK. I suspect so because upon including ASIO header and just getting an IP Address string, I get build warnings like these: Please define _WIN32_WINNT or _WIN32_WINDOWS appropriately. For example: - add -D_WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 to the compiler command line; or - add _WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 to your project's Preprocessor Definitions. Assuming _WIN32_WINNT=0x0501 (i.e. Windows XP target). File0001.cpp Please define _WIN32_WINNT or _WIN32_WINDOWS appropriately. question about changing permission with boost

Hi, I am trying to copy a file from one folder to another, but I am also trying to access to the last_write_time of the file, BEFORE copying it to the other folder, And I notice, whenever I am inside a Read-only directory, and trying to access the "last_write_time" of a Read-only file, I get the following error message: what(): boost::filesystem::last_write_time: Permission denied: "src/ temp1/methodologies.ppt" In this scenario "temp1" is a Read-only directory, also methodologies.ppt is a Read-only file as well. Does anyone know how to get around this? Is there a way to change the directory/file permission (to write) prior to copying, and then change the permission back again? I need to access the time-stamp before copying the file, because right after I copy the file, the date-stamp will be updated. I would really appreciate some help, please advise, thanks, RB

I have code using bundled properties roughly like this that compiles with boost 1.42: struct EdgeProperty; typedef adjacency_list< ... , EdgeProperty , ...> MyGraph; typedef graph_traits<MyGraph>::edge_descriptor Edge; struct EdgeProperty { Edge next; }; When trying to compile this with boost 1.46.1 I get "error: forward declaration of EdgeProperty’". I am not sure why. The obvious solution would be to move the definition of EdgeProperty before the MyGraph typedef, but then I run into a circular dependency problem as I want to store an edge_descriptor in EdgeProperty. any ideas? If I know that during the execution of the algorithm the graph size must be grown by X number of vertices in one go, is there a way this can be done to avoid multiple allocations such as when using std::vector's reserve(..) or resize(..) member functions without subverting the BGL's documented interface? Currently I use a for loop which iterates over add_vertex(vertex_property, graph). Can a reserve and/or resize equivalent otherwise please be added somewhere? Thank you, Geoff

Hi, I am newb in using boost. And, I am having so much trouble installing and running a simple example. I would REALLY appreciate some help. I tried to install boost_1_47_0.tar.gz on my unix machine, and I followed the stpes http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/more/getting_started/unix-variants.html to first build, and install the libraries. I had no problem running some the examples (provided on the link above, that was using some of its already built libraries), and they all worked. The problem is when I try to run an example that is using a boost_filesystem. I tried uninstalling/installing different boost versions, cause I thought the error may be version dependent, but it wasn't. I also tried to built the entire library using different versions of gcc (3.4.6, 4.3.5, 4.4.0, 4.5.0, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6.0), and I get the same error messages. I even made sure that when compile, I have the boost_1_4x_0 path in my compile script. I also made sure that I have appended boost_1_4x_0 path to my $path. I even tried to have -lboost_filesystem in my compile script, but this didn't help either !!! Hi I posted on this a couple of hours ago with some problems. It turned out that some of the problems I had might have been due to buggy hardware. But there is still some thing I do not understand... So, now I have reproduced some of of the problems I have with out any hardware (except from a PC). Basically I'm trying to read from a input source (in this case stdin) with a timeout. unlocatable infinite loop when using boost::serialization

Ok so i've set up boost::serialization to work with objects whose constructor and destructors are private (forcing you to make them through "factories"), but after doing the coming steps, the << operator of a boost::oarchive never returns. I've followed what was happening exactly in a debugger, but don't know what's happening *after the ending brackets of the object's serialization function. It's not even reaching the overloaded destroy function*. Public Encryption with ASIO SSL

I'm trying to create a system where clients can encrypt messages, but only the server can decrypt them. I'm configuring the context on the server-side like so: context_.set_options(boost::asio::ssl::context::default_workarounds | boost::asio::ssl::context::no_sslv2); context_.set_password_callback(boost::bind(&server::get_password, this)); context_.use_private_key_file("server.pem", boost::asio::ssl::context::pem); However, I can't find any way to load the public key on the clients. Can I create a connection that relies on public-key encryption? Or do the SSL classes expect me to use public-key encryption only to generate symmetrical keys, ie with Diffie-Hellman? -David

Hi All, I'm not sure I have chosen the right testing architecture (external runner for a DSO), and I am having problems getting Boost::Test to run properly. I have print statements which are not printing in functions registered with BOOST_TEST_SUITE. And I have spiked a test would should print an error message. I thought it would be a good idea to look at [sample] projects that work rather than code snippets. Unfortunately, the link for "collection of examples" at [1] is broken. [mpl] Safe to instantiate mpl classes for tag-dispatch-by-instance?

Hi all, Say I have a functor which accepts a tag instance: struct tagA {}; struct tagB {}; struct MyFunc { template <typename TTag> void operator()(TTag, int other_stuff) {...} }; In some cases I want to pass multiple tags at once. Is it safe to just instantiate mpl::pair, mpl::vector, etc. and use them for this purpose, since from a runtime perspective they're just empty classes? Or, is this a Bad Idea for some reason? Working around the restriction in enable_shared_from_this

Suppose I have a class called Group, extending boost::enable_shared_from_this<Group>. Now suppose I have something like this: class Foo { boost::shared_ptr<const Group> G; public: Foo(const Group& G_) : G(G_.shared_from_this()) {} }; This would totally barf if, among other things, G_ was allocated from the stack, say, since I don't have an owning shared_ptr instance. So, it would appear that, at the very least, if you were to allocate a Group on the stack, then you would need a shared_ptr with a null deleter to make use of Foo. This seems inconvenient to whoever may want to use Foo, so is there a way to change this so get around the shared_ptr instance restriction without changing Foo?

This is my question: I have the following directory pattern (Dir1 is the parent directory, and the rest are the child files/subdirectories): Dir1 file1 file2 .file3 subdir1 .subdir2 the following code will go through the Dir1, and it will fail in creating the "path" when it reaches ".file3" or ".subdir2" boost::filesystem:ath dir1_path(filepath.c_str()); How should I create a path to a directory that (for example) has the following path? /root/my_docs/pgg/.file1 filesystem::path works just fine if I had to deal with (/root/my_docs/pgg/file1) instead of (/root/my_docs/pgg/.file1) !!! apparently when the file/directory starts with '.', I cannot get filesystem::path to behave properly. please advise, thanks, Rudy

However I am a bit concerned about thread-safety when the run-method of the used io_service object ist called from multiple threads and there are parallel read- and write operations on the same socket. I was wondering about the status of the above topic: Does a boost implementation of an adaptor exist or is Sebastian's suggestion the best alternative currently available? His solution did not work out of the box for me, since g++-4.6 complained about an "incomplete type std::tuple_size<const std::tuple<..." However, when I replaced each occurence of std::tuple_size<X> by std::tuple_size< typename std::remove_cv<X>::type > everything seemed to work fine. Regards Claas > No docs. Hi All, I'm working form http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/test/doc/html/index.html. I can't seem to find Boost::Test's streams. The discussion of streams begins at [1]. [1] does list macros such as BOOST_TEST_DONT_PRINT_LOG_VALUE, but I'm interested in a C++-centric solution. For example: // test framework output stream using boost_test::tout; tout << loglevel::error << "My error message" << endl; tout << loglevel::warn << "My warning message" << endl; According to [2], I can set the log level from the environment and from the command line. But would like to set it dynamically. For example: tout << setlevel(warn); // warnings and above or tout.setlelvel(error); // errors and above In addition, I would like to be able to tie a file output to screen output, so I can watch the tests roll by and go to the log file for in depth reading. To be fair, redirection is covered at [3], but its not quite what we are looking for. For example: ofstream logfile(...); ... tout.attach(logfile); or tout.tie(logfile); Though the authors did a great job on the documentation, these topics do not appear to be included. Any ideas how one might go about these sorts of things? [boost.asio 1.47] : changing host time

Hello, I would like to know if there are any implications with the fact of having a call to settimeofday in order to change the system time while using boost asio (asynchronous timers). The point of calling settimeofday (software is running on a linux box with super user privileges) is to synchronize the system clock with a GPS receiver clock at some point while the io service is already running. However having done a lot of serial comms in the past seeing a couple of characters only whilst more data is on the wire I'd guess that the timeout is as a result of the low level serial hardware interrupt. The UART is probably signalling that its internal FIFO buffer is full and you need to read this promptly - quite how that all pans out and what daemon / service has the responsibility of reading this these days I haven't got the faintest - I was writing TSR's when I knew the gory technical details of this so life was much simpler. I'm actually impressed that you've found a computer that still has a serial port on it! 99 Bottles of Beer using Boost MPL, feedback invited

So inspired by http://programmingpraxis.com/2011/08/05/ninety-nine-bottles-of-beer/ , I decided to attempt to generate the lyrics to the 99 bottles of beer song. To make it interesting I decided to use Boost MPL to generate the lyrics using template metaprogramming. Here is my attempt. https://gist.github.com/1130306 It compiles with gcc 4.2 against boost 1.47. Given that I am pretty inexperienced with MPL I would very much appreciate some constructive criticism. I'd specifically like to know if the code can be cleaned up to be simpler or to perform better. synchronize threads from a thread pool (using asio::io_service)

Hi - I'm using asio::io_service as a dispatcher for a thread pool. I'm wondering how I can synchronize the threads after I post the tasks to the io_service. I tried using a barrier but it doesn't always work correctly. The barrier waits indefinitely; although I verified the post() function gets called, the io_service doesn't seem to dispatch anything. I've also thread using the boost::threadpool library but the overall speed is slower. I'd appreciate any insight on what I'm doing wrong with the barrier or any other high performance thread pooling alternatives. What's wrong with this simple multithreaded function that uses regex?

The code snippet below is the core of a function mythreadfunc() that is run concurrently for several threads using the Win32 MSVC functions CreateThread() and WaitForMultipleObjects(). Everything seems to work fine except for actually using boost::regex_match(). For example, if that line below is changed to if(true), the entire multithreaded function works perfectly. Similarly, if mythreadfunc() as shown below is run without multiple threads, it works perfectly. But if mythreadfunc() as shown below is run with multiple threads, the entire program crashes with return value 0xc0000005, which is some kind of memory access violation. This leads me to believe that boost::regex does not play well with MSVC threads, but according to the Boost site, there aren't any bugs related to this issue for Boost 1.45. As far as I can tell I'm using Boost in thread safe mode (BOOST_HAS_THREADS is defined). I'm probably doing something really dumb related to MSVC threads or related to the way I configured Boost, but I'm not sure what it is! I could switch to using Boost threads, but I would like to minimize the changes to the code. We recently upgraded from Boost 1.34.1 to 1.46.1 and moved from Visual Studio 2005 to VS 2010. We have an application that uses the Gzip decompression feature. date _facet segmentation fault

Hello, I use this little code for formating a date value: std::stringstream l_stream; boost::gregorian::date_facet* l_format = new boost::gregorian::date_facet(); l_format->format("%Y-%m-%d"); l_stream.imbue(std::locale(std::locale::classic(), l_format)); If I call after the imbue a delete (delte l_format) to remove the date_facet from the heap the program creates a segmentation fault value. Does the std::stringstream remove the date_facet object from the heap? If not, how can I do a correct clear of the object? I hope, that question is not off topic. Hi! When compiling my test cases with 1.47 (no matter if dynamically or statically linked) they fail. Not the test cases themselves, but a segfault after the test case is done. Disabling Tokenizer in Derived Classes - after their constructors have been executed.

Hi, I have boost tokenizer and its iterator stored in my base class. The tokenizer got initialized with a const std::string&. I do the tokenization in my base class and provide the iterator, pointing to the first token, to the derived classes - but only to be used in their constructors. After the derived class constructor has been executed, the tokenizer and its iterator should not remain available - what can I do to accomplish that? Best regards, Asif

I am trying to make a thread object, so I can later have better control of threads and the resources they are using. This code has a problem in that in order for us to wait for the thread to complete, the derived class is going to have to call thread_.join(). That leaves a bad taste in my mouth as I'd rather the base class take care of all the details, and all the derived class has to worry about is providing a Work method. This class doesn't provide much that boost::thread doesn't already have, but I want to make different classes for additonal requirements. One of which I have in mind is a thread with looped work and a start, stop, method. Making an object out of it will also probably help with derving classes that take care of locking their data...or at least organize it a bit. So the question 1 is, is there a way I can avoid the requirement here that derived classes call thread_.join() and do something different in the base class? Question 2 - What happens to the execution of the thread, when an exception is thrown from the thread that owns boost::thread object or the boost::thread object is destroyed? I'll probably have more questions as I progress.

I have a template that I instantiate with a type that has to be nullary callable, so template <typename NullaryCallable> struct X { /*....*/ }; I'd like to be a good boy scout here, so I should constrain the template parameter, so template <typename NullaryCallablle> struct X { BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT(( Generator<NullaryCallable, void> )); // ... }; However, that constrains it to be nullary callable and returning void, and I'd prefer to avoid the void condition. Is all that sensible, true, and fixable? Thx - Rob.
