[meta-state-machine] Flag_AND doesn't work

Hi, I am using Boost 1.47.0, and wrote a state machine in MSM with 2 parallel regions. In each region, one state has a flag defined. According to the documentation, when I ask the flag the following way: sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_AND>() then it returns true if both regions are in a state with the flag. However, it doesn't work for me. I have attached an example of this problem. It has the states Stopped1, Started1 and Stopped2, Started2 for the two regions respectively. The states Started1 and Started2 has the flag FlagStarted attached. The flag is checked after each call of process_event. The output of the program is the following: Entering Stopped1 Entering Stopped2 (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_OR>()): no (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_AND>()): no Leaving Stopped1 Entering Started1 (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_OR>()): yes (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_AND>()): no Leaving Stopped2 Entering Started2 (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_OR>()): yes (sm.is_flag_active<FlagStarted, StateMachine::Flag_AND>()): no After the second transition, we are in state (Started1, Started2). The flag should be active here, but it isn't. Is there a problem with MSM, or am I doing something wrong? -- Péter

Using boost function input iterator with class member functions

Hello, I am trying to use a class member function in conjunction with boost's function input iterator, and am having trouble coming up with a solution which can in any way be considered elegant... My initial thought process was to do something like : std::copy( // does not work because the functor (1st arg to make_function_input iterator ) cannot be temporary... or something like that boost::make_function_input_iterator(boost::bind(&My_Class::my_function, 0)), boost::make_function_input_iterator(boost::bind(&My_Class::my_function, 10)), std::ostream_iterator<result_type>(std::cout, " ") ); However, this fails as noted above. Thus, i had to look at some compiler error messages in order to figure out the return type of boost::bind and create some boost::bind object producing the working code below, however, this looks pretty terrible. Can anyone suggest a more convenient solution to the problem I am trying to solve? linking with libboost_graph not enough, but libboost_regex required?

Hello, we have some legacy code, which after a change of system no longer runs: The new system is Boost 1.44.0 under Linux (Suse 11.4 for the record), but compiling with gcc version 4.1.2. > uname -a Linux csnereid 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux We have a simple application which reads a graph-file and performs a simple computation. It links to libboost_graph. 1. boost::zip_iterator requires a readable iterator. 2. std::istreambuf_iterator is a readable iterator. 3. boost::zip_iterator cannot dereference std::istream_iterator because std::istreambuf_iterator returns by value while boost::zip_iterator returns by reference; the exact error message is invalid initialization of non-const reference of type ‘char&’ from an rvalue of type ‘std::istreambuf_iterator<char, std::char_traits<char> >::char_type’ Contradiction? Am I missing anything? Chris

boost serialization help

Hi My name is Ohad, and I work for the Technion institution, Israel. We are currently working on a research that involves programming in C++, and for that project we are using the serialization module of Boost. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask for help with boost. If not, Could you please direct me to the right address? my problems: 1) does the following supposed to work? : I have a : class saving helper{ boost::archive::binary_archive* ar; } and: class Y { X* first vector <Y*> second } and I try to save Y with the saving helper: for each level of Y object I initialize a saving helper, directly call a function that does *ar & * first (the function name isnt serialize\save) for each Y* on the next level I create a new saving helper object with a new pointer, initiallized the same: saving_helper::saving_helper(saving_helper* to_copy){ this->ar = to_copy->ar;} and continue saving the very same object (another level) with the new saving helper (the load is standard - via a regualr load function) I know that this is not the standard way to use boost, but I dont have much choice. 2) When trying to use the above method with text archive, I always get a streaming error, but If I use a binary archive than the streaming error vanished and instead I start to read the file from its middle (i.e. read the forth number instead of the first, reading the fifth bumber instead the second,etc). increasing the file length by adding to it 3 redundent numbers solved those two problems, and yet Im looking for a more stable solution, so help will be apprecialted. 3) boost tracking: where should I put the BOOST_CLASS_TRACKING macro? Subclassing "position_iterator"

Hi, I have the following question. I want to subclass/implement a new position_iterator that recognizes lines such as: #line 11 "electrical.lcl" and updates accordingly its location. My question is how to do that in the most elegant manner. Shall I copy/paste "position_iterator.hpp" and hack the increment() method? Would you, guys, use a Qi parser to recognize these lines? Asio example 5 sagmentation fault

I'm really interested in exemple 5 of boost asio: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/doc/html/boost_asio/tutorial/tuttimer5… I've tried it with boost-1.47.0. I can compile without warnings using: g++ -Wall -pedantic -lboost_thread -lboost_system -o timer5 timer5.cpp but when I launch the executable it gives me a Segmentation fault. [test] Does boost.test support mock objects?

Hi, One facility that I really love about Google test is their mock object framework. It facilitates the development of tests/stub objects. Note that this is also delivered in easy mock and mockpp. Does anyone know if Boost.Test offers such a thing? I've looked through the documentation and I couldn't find anything. Thanks, J

[range] What's the best way to initialize a new container from a range?

Hi! Say I have a range R and I want to construct a new container from the range R. Will I always have to repeat the expression yielding the range, or is there a shorter way? Example: std::vector<int> numbers( boost::irange(7, 42).begin(), boost::irange(7, 42).end() ); Note that it's just an example. It is time to include the type trait extension to the official boost trunk. These traits can detect if you can use a given operator with given arguments. For example: has_plus<double, int>::value is true because the following program compiles without error: double lhs; int rhs; lhs+rhs; We have come to three proposed lists of names (A, B and C): https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/GuideLines/Naming/OperatorTraitNames I have included the corresponding names of standard keywords, standard function objects from <functional>, boost Proto and boost Operators. 64bit boost::regex link error

Hi, I am trying to port a 32bit application built on 32bit windows to 64bit. We are using boost::regex library. We have successfully built 64 bit version of boost. When we try to link our application with boost::regex we get the following error. What could be the reason? Hi, I try to serialize a derived object by its base class pointer to an archive I derived from xml_oarchive_impl exactly the same way as it is documented in the example code here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/example/log_archive… http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/example/log_archive… However, when I start the program (to output to my derived archive) I get the assertion (“BOOST_ASSERT(false)”) in the following method in “basic_serializer_map.cpp” (I checked with the debugger (VS2010) and found the m_map.size() is 0). BOOST_ARCHIVE_DECL(const basic_serializer *) basic_serializer_map::find( const boost::serialization::extended_type_info & eti ) const { const basic_serializer_arg bs(eti); map_type::const_iterator it; it = m_map.find(& bs); if(it == m_map.end()){ BOOST_ASSERT(false); return 0; } return *it; } If I use the DERIVED class pointer it works fine with my own derived archive. If I use a BASE class pointer and use the ORIGINAL xml_oarchive it works fine too. Only when I combine both (using my own derived archive AND try to serialize through a base class pointer) it fails with the assertion. One more hint: using the debugger I saw that the m_map member in "basic_serializer_map.hpp" is statically initialized before main() is started. Some information for all my derived classes which contain serialization-methods where inserted into m_map. So m_map isn't actually empty but it seems to be a different object than the one where m_map has been initialized. [MultiIndex] Iterator validity when modifying equal_range keys

Hello *, reading this page states only that iterator validity is preserved for hashed indices. I have a multi-index container with ordered_non_unique entries. Is it safe to find a matching range and modify the keys there? Here an example: entry_data& entries = indexed; //get the view to the MI-Container for(iterator_range<entry_data::iterator> r = entries.equal_range(boost::make_tuple(false)) ; !r.empty() ; r.advance_begin(1) ) { index_data d = r.front(); d.masked = true; entries.replace(r.begin(), d); } Here updated d.masked field is a first member of the composite key. What happens if I do the update as shown upon? Would it be more efficient to iterate backwards and do the update, since than all the elements will not be rearranged? [serialization] Export macro doesnt work

Hi I was trying to use BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT for all my classes in order to save them but I always got unregistered class error. So I used oa.register_type<object>(); for the class that was causing the error and problem solved. But why doesnt the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro work? Why I need to use oa.register_type<object>(); ? Im using Boost 1.46.1 Thanks

complex matrix operations

Hello, I am looking for a C++ library that has routines for a variety of complex matrix decompositions (eigen, cholesky, singular value etc) and even complex matrix inverse, principal matrix logarthm of a complex matrix etc. And the matrices which I am talking are pretty huge..can go upto 1024 x 1024 x 32. I have already found a library that can do all of the above..used it..it works fine..but a disadvantage is that it cannot handle multidimensional arrays. Now the question is, does Boost C++ library have functions for the above? Looking forward to a reply and thanks in advance Ramesh

[Program Options] notifiers for options with no value

Hello, I'm wondering if there is a possibility to make program_options library to notify me automatically when option with no value is passed? As far as I understand this feature exists only for options with defined value_semantic. But this means I must permit passing a value for such options. Say, I make an option with zero_tokens() semantics so it can be passed without value and throw an error if some value was provided. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem if you have positional options. In that case a positional option following a no-value option will be parsed as this option's value. I can't set notifier for options with no value? This is something not understandable. I even think of some patch to be added to the lib. Regards, Dmitriy.

problem deserializing to base class pointer

I have a strange problem. I searched through the list and modified my initial code quite a bit but cannot seem to get this to work. Serialization seems fine, but deserialization to base pointer in particular doesn't seem to work correctly (I am getting instance of base class inside). Hi all, I have written a small grammar for command line parsing where function binders could be added as actors (callback) of a distinct option. Retrieving the result type is manageable with boost binders but I have no idea how I could retrieve the argument type in order to do a proper conversion from char* to int without the usage of make_adaptable<> which breaks the elegance of the binder usage at this point. My self-written binder class exposes appropriate typedefs so the writer of the parser grammar does not have to cope with all that 'magic' template stuff, but I cannot get a working solution for boost::bind nor do I get a working solution with tr1 binders. Maybe anybody could help or at least could explain me why the boost classes do not define these simple typedefs? Regards, Martin

[serialization] deserializing asynchronously serialized types

I have an unusual use case for boost.serialization, and I was wondering if it would be possible to adapt it to my needs: - I have a set of over 100 types, and instances of each are generated asynchronously then serialized to a file in that order. - The most interesting serialized data will be written just before the power is unexpectedly cut. - I need to load in and run on as much data as possible when reading the serialized data back, ignoring incomplete data at the end (due to a power cut). - The basic Boost serialization examples require you to know the type of the next piece of data to be loaded when reading. Since these types are generated asynchronously they are not known in advance. - I need to write the data out immediately when it arrives because of the power issue. - Files will be getting up to around 150GB in size for binary archives, so it can't be marshaled in memory, it needs to be written immediately even if it is redundant. Is there a way to read in that serialized file using the facilities provided in boost.serialization? I could also serialize an index or custom headers indicating the next type to appear, I would prefer to avoid doing so. One way of achieving some of these goals is writing one piece at a time using a binary archive to an fstream. But I don't know what aspects of my requirements will prove to be a problem. Hello. I write network library which offers blocking socket operations (connect, read, write, ...) with timeouts, using boost::asio asynchronous operations as implementation. It is actually some sort of wrapper around boost::asio. Implementation does something like this (read, for example): do_read() { timer.async_wait(&handle_timer) socket.async_read(..., handle_read); wait_for_all_handlers(); deal_with_ec(); } handle_timer() { socket.cancel(); } handle_read() { timer.cancel(); } I have one io_service for all the sockets/timers with one thread doing io_service::run(). Code is multithreaded, so many threads run that functions like do_read() simultaneously (for different sockets, of course). I have two questions: 1. How to wait for completion of all handlers? Currently I use shared_ptr with mutex+condvar (for each library call), it works fine, but seems to be too heavy-weight. 2. There is a chance (with small timeouts), that timer expires before async_read() is started, so sock.cancel() is no-op in handle_timer(), and timer will be disabled. Currently, I just ignore this. I can use another mutex (or strand) to protect from this, but it is also heavy-weight.

Hi, I am having a statemachine with a submachine. In the internal submachine I need to check if there is a flag active in the outer statemachine. Currently I solve this with a const pointer to the outermost FSM passed to the submachine's constructor: backEnd.set_states(msm::back::states_ << StOk(msm::back::states_ << StSlave(&backEnd))); StSlave is the internal submachine in which I need to check whether a flag in StOk is active or not. Hello, I am new to the boost mailing list, so I apologize before hand if this is not the appropriate forum for this question. I have been using boost/random recently and have encountered what appears to be a problem with poisson variate generators with large lambda values. The random values can't seem to get much higher than 800 regardless of what value lambda is. Could you please review the following patch for inclusion in boost::units? *WHY*: Obviously this only defines a conversion for boost::units::one to a numerical 1. When trying to convert at runtime (aiming for a runtime/dynamic unit instead of the compiletime/static unit provided) I use the following function: template <typename U1, typename U2> double unit_dispatch2t(U1 const& u1, U2 const& u2) { return bu::conversion_factor(u1,u2); } where U1 and U2 are boost::unit::unit derivatives. Without a conversion operator the compiler chickens out by claiming to not be able to convert boost::units::one to (in my case) double. The added conversion operator allows successfull compilation, thus allowing actual runtime units (my application needs to handle calculations where some units are known at compiletime and some only at runtime (e.g. the user wants the calculation to be done in meters or millimeters)). [wave] Tracing a macro in a preprocessor directive

I was trying to trace the output of a macro within a preprocessor directive in a file using the Wave trace facility. The directive is: #elif BOOST_PP_ITERATION_FLAGS() == 1 so I specified: #pragma wave trace(enable) #elif BOOST_PP_ITERATION_FLAGS() == 1 #pragma wave trace(disable) But wave's trace showed me an empty file where the macro output ( -tsomefile ) should have been. Is there a way to capture the output of the BOOST_PP_ITERATION_FLAGS() macro at the point where the #elif is occuring using Wave's trace facility ?

Just getting used to move things with great boost.move + boost.container libraries and being able to do same with signal-related code would be really nice as now the only way to deal with that is to keep signals on the heap which I find rather awkward. This is in cygwin, using gcc. initially I used the following (I don't use python and don't have MPI, but wanted everything else): $ ./bootstrap.sh --with-libraries=chrono,date_time,exception,filesystem,graph,graph_parallel, iostreams,math,program_options,random,regex,serialization,signals,system,tes t,thread,wave ./b2 install I then tried building QuantLib, which makes extensive use of boost, including the test framework. But it failed because it tried linking to a multihtreaded build of the test frameqwork. I therefore tried the following, assuming that like make, it would just build and install those targets that had not been built the first time. $ ./bootstrap.sh --with-libraries=chrono,date_time,exception,filesystem,graph,graph_parallel, iostreams,math,program_options,random,regex,serialization,signals,system,tes t,thread,wave link=static link=shared threading=single threading=multi ./b2 install Unfortunately, it did not create the multithreaded build of the testframework that QuantLib requires. What did I miss that is preventing me from getting the multihtreaded builds of the required libraries? Thanks Ted

[math][tools][units] generic libraries not generic enough

Hi, Lately I am using Boost.Units quite intensively for defining lots of thermodynamic functions. The other day I needed a root finding algorithm that can work on one of these functions. I look at couple of libraries,and I ended up rolling and adaptor that adimensionalizes the function on Boost.Units quantities, etc, etc. Then I though, hey! we have Boost.Math tools, even root finding algorithms, and these functions are *very* generic as Boost is supposed to be. And I found the function: boost::math::tools::bracket_and_solve_root which has the perfect underlying algorithm for the application. I started programming and after several compilation errors I realized that, as happened before, the functions are not generic enough. For example the arguments are bracket_and_solve_root( F f, const T& guess, const T& factor, bool rising, Tol tol, boost::uintmax_t& max_iter); in my case "guess" is an argument type of type boost::units::quantity<si::meter> but then "factor" has to be a *different* type. For this function to be generic one need that factor is of new type parameter. In my opinion the function should be template<typename F, typename T, typename Fact, typename Tol> bracket_and_solve_root( F f, const T& guess, const T& factor, bool rising, Tol tol, boost::uintmax_t& max_iter); to begin with (and then there is a chain of other internal changes). What do you think? should I open a bug ticket? Let's put it in more abstract way: T*T=T should not be a requirement for a root algorithm to work. Once and for all, can we give a name to the model type of which Boost.Units quantity models for? so the library writers stop assuming that T*T=T for numeric values and can improve half-way generic libraries? Other numeric libraries that suffer from this deficiency are Boost.Accumulators, Boost.Geometry, and Boost.Interval among the ones I tried. I think this issues should be addressed, not only to make them work with Boost.Units but also to bring those libraries to a higher level of generality. Just an opinion. Thank you, Alfredo

Hi I am trying to develop some python applications which use boost.python extensions. I am very new to both VC and Boost. I am able to compile boost.python following the help i found out in google. But I am not able to build my dll library linking with boost libraries. I am not able to figure out what and all going wrong. If I make it static library to be generated, the code builds but my python script is not able to import the library. [MSM] looking for a recursive get_state_name

Hello, i'am looking for a way to get the names(s) of the innermost active state(s) of a MSM with composite states, e.g. for debugging purposes. In my application i use state machines with orthogonal regions and submachines. Currently i use code based on the example given for fill_state_names, see http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/msm/doc/HTML/re02.html#d0e5385 It works well for for orthogonal regions. For for submachines only the name of the active submachine is returned. Instead i want the name of the innermost active state in each submachine. I already found 'recursive_get_transition_table', this seems to be a first step. But i don't know how to get the state id's on the path to innermost active state. Unfortunately i don't know much about boost::mpl, thus i'am a bit lost at the moment. Any suggestions on how to get the state id's on the path to the innermost active state? Hi, I've just found that we have a compiler error when using the BOOST_REQUIRE_THROW macro in a if/else statement with implicit block. Let's have an example: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(foo) { if(true) BOOST_REQUIRE_THROW(throw std::exception(), std::exception); else BOOST_REQUIRE_THROW(throw std::exception(), std::exception); } Will fail with: file.cpp: In member function ‘void foo::test_method()’: file.cpp:184:2: error: ‘else’ without a previous ‘if’ To make it work, we need to put explicit block: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(foo) { if(true) { BOOST_REQUIRE_THROW(throw std::exception(), std::exception); } else { BOOST_REQUIRE_THROW(throw std::exception(), std::exception); } } Wouldn't it be possible to add this block in the macro so library users don't have to care about? Any reason why you can't use Ubuntu's package for Boost? Do you need the latest version of Boost? If you use the Ubuntu packages, you should have no issues as I was successfully able to run that example on my Ubuntu installation. Hi, I am having problems compiling boost.log. I am using Visual C++ 2010 Express. There is no project/solution file for VS2010. Perhaps I need to use bjam but executing "bjam Jamfile.v2" doesn't result in anything. Can you please give me a simple command for compiling boost.log for Visual C++ 2010 Express - 32-bit targeted at Windows Server 2003? Hi, In documentation I saw that using tcp::resolver::query constructor it is possible to resolve domain.name as well as service name, as shown in the following code fragment. boost::asio::io_service ios; boost::asio::ip::tcp::resolver resolver(ios); boost::asio::ip::tcp::resolver::query query("mydomain.com","myservice"); Here 'myservice' is not a well known service (port number). For resolving 'myservice' where should I add the port number? in my domain name server's (BIND) /etc/services file or in my local systems services file? I've read for months, but didn't want to const_cast my object (or is it ok sometimes?). However, making my destructor virtual removed the warning. Here's my question: why does making the object destructor virtual remove the warning, effectively making my object instances const? And the section on this trap from the Rationale section of the Serialization documentation is not in the1.47 version (howcome?) but can be found in previous version here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/libs/serialization/doc/rationale.html#… Oh, and please forgive me if the answer is *obvious* - just an intermediate programmer. boost::mutex::scoped_lock fails with res = 22 (EINVAL)

Hi, I am trying to understand why the acquiring of a lock fails on error code 22 (EINVAL). After Googling I find one of two causes: 1) The mutex was created with the protocol attribute having the value PTHREAD_PRIO_PROTECT and the calling thread's priority is higher than the mutex's current priority ceiling. The mutex is created by the main-thread and the lock is acquired by a thread from a boost::thread_group. But in many cases the lock is acquired without error, so I guess this is not the cause. 2) The value specified by mutex does not refer to an initialized mutex object. The mutex is default constructed by boost::mutex's constructor so I expect it to be initialized properly. Both causes *seem* not to apply to my case. What am I missing here? I am using boost 1.46.1 on Ubuntu amd64. Cheers, Andrej

I am a fan of Boost.Test. When I need to test it there is a universal test main.cpp //File test_main.cpp #define BOOST_TEST_MAIN #include <boost/test/unit_test.hpp> #define ENABLE_TEST #include "foo.h" //#include other includes //End of File test_main This pattern has helped me to use TDD easily. The only issue is that test cases are scattered among each header files. Usually I do not know exactly how many test cases/suites are included. If there is a {--list|-l } option to print a tree of registered test suites and test cases, so that one can quickly look them up here and filter the test cases to be run, it would be a great feature.

Hi, I'm trying to build boost on CentOS 5.5 using the /usr/bin/gcc44 compiler and I'm running into difficulties with documentation not fitting reality. How do I make this work? What I've tried... Note: I've removed /usr/bin/gcc and /usr/bin/g++ to force errors when gcc44 and g++44 are not used. Using ./bootstrap.sh Building Boost.Jam with toolset ... tools/jam/src/### ### No toolset specified. Please use --toolset option. Setting CC=/usr/bin/gcc44 and CXX=/usr/bin/g++44 (note that this won't work if gcc and g++ exist because then it will default to the gcc toolkit and not the gcc-4.4 toolkit that I want). This builds a number of things (looking at the bootstrap.log) but still gives the following error. Ignoring the error and calling ./bjam then fails. Building Boost.Jam with toolset ... tools/jam/src/### ### No toolset specified. Please use --toolset option. Using ./bootstrap.sh --toolset=gcc gives an error: unrecognized option: --toolset=gcc Using ./bootstrap.sh --with-toolset=gcc gives an error: Building Boost.Jam with toolset gcc... Failed to build Boost.Jam -> bootstrap.log shows that it is trying to build with gcc, which doesn't exist, therefore error. Using ./bootstrap.sh --with-toolset=gcc-4.4 gives an error: Building Boost.Jam with toolset gcc... How in the world do I get this thing to use /usr/bin/gcc44 and /usr/bin/g++44 to compile? Hello all, I use the 'set_controlling' function for automatic disconnect when the connection goes out of scope. This is quite handy but not documented. Is it an implementation detail not to be used ordinary mortals or a small documentation mismatch? Also the reference section of the documentation mentions that scope_connection's are noncopyable but in fact u can just copy them (with all consequences). Is this a documentation overlook (I would think that marking them as noncopyable is safer). I use Boost 1.47

I think it about allocating memory in the stack. Hi, The page at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/doc/html/program_options/howto.html#id… says that the "split_winmain function is a portable mechanism provided by the library." Does that mean that the same code (containing the split_winmain function, that is) will also run on Linux, for example? I guess it would return normal args on Linux. Could you elaborate please? In addition, could you please post a link to a cookbook-type recipe for parsing windows command-line (that parses linux/unix command line as well)? Hi everyone, I've been dipping my toes into boost threads, and I'm running into a strange issue. What I'm trying to do is to run a comparison between thread_ids. I have an object that's "owned" by a thread, and when something calls one of its functions, I'd like to compare the thread_id to the owner's thread id. So I thought that boost::this_thread::get_id would do the trick to figure out what the current running thread's thread id is. For some reason, when I call it, an interrupt is signalled to my main thread. Is boost::this_thread::get_id not the right thing to use here? Thanks in advance, Yi

Dear all, After read the "Optimizations" section of Boost.Serialization docs ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/serialization/doc/special.html#op…) i get confused about the need to include/use array.hpp header with std::vector<>. I just need to include <boost/serialization/vector.hpp> and all is done, correct? Furthermore, i'm wondering if there is some header to include for serialize boost::multi_array<> class without doing myself the overload of the "array wrapper" and serialization member functions. Serialization: how to port binary archives containing NAN created with version 1.43 to version 1.47?

Hi everyone, I am encountering a particularly gnarly version of the backward-compatibility problem with binary archives that others have discovered (here: http://groups.google.com/group/boost-list/browse_thread/thread/f4e3287f6925…, for example). Specifically, I have a number of binary archives created with version 1.43 of the library that are unreadable using version 1.47. I'd like to "port" them forward, so my initial plan was to compile a simple translator program against the 1.43 library that would read the binary archives and save them as (1.43) text archives. Then, a second program compiled against the 1.47 library would read the text archives and save them as (1.47) binary. Easy peasy. Except: the archives contain NAN values, which work fine when everything is binary but fail to deserialize for any version of the library when the archive is text (or xml, apparently), for reasons I don't quite understand. So my question is: how can I take my (1.43) binary archives containing NAN values and get them into a format readable by the current (1.47) version of the library? Is it possible? Thanks, Terry (An aside: it seems strange that I'm allowed to serialize a NAN to text, but it breaks when I try to deserialize it... why not prevent the creation of un-deserializable archives at the point of serialization?).

[Review] Review results for Lockfree

All, The review for the Lockfree library written by Tim Blechman started July 18th 2011 and ended on July 28th. I counted 8 votes, none of which were NO. All authors votes YES, some made additional requests. Overall, the verdict of the community was clear: Tim Blechmann's Lockfree library is ACCEPTED The discussion was lively and it touched on several points. Design ------ The design of the library is sound, the API is usable. Except for naming issues (discussed below) almost no comments have been made on how to change it. People reviewing the library would like to see a more modular approach to lockfree data structures in general, possibly by exposing building blocks or by utilizing policies. The general interest was to have a more diverse set of data structures available, such as a lock-free linked list or bounded and fixed-sized data structures. Atomics Library --------------- As the initial review announcement stated, Lockfree depends on an external Atomics library, which has to be separately reviewed in order to get into Boost as a first class library. There has been some discussions whether Lockfree could be accepted without Atomics being reviewed. Others suggested Lockfree may be reviewed and added to Boost SVN only after Atomics got reviewed (this was mentioned in the review announcement as well). After all those discussions and based on the wide interest Lockfree data structures have, I'd suggest to add the current Atomics library as an implementation detail to Lockfree. Special handling of compilers which already have implemented std::atomics has to be added to Lockfree, though. In this case Lockfree should use the atomics from the stdandard library. Naming ------ The consensus was that the naming of the reviewed data structures has to be changed. The names should be either fifo and lifo or queue and stack. AFAIK, Tim already addresses this point. Documentation ------------- The consensus of almost everybody referring to the documentation was that it needs more work. Here is a short (but non-exhaustive) list of things being mentioned: - It lacks rationale and information about the implementation - The class synopsis of the data structures should be accessible from the "Reference" page. - Make non-thread-safe parts more explicit (fifo::empty is described as non-thread-safe) - Document exception guarantees - More information needed on internals, the design, and rationale I would like to thank all who participated in the discussions. Custom services using boost::asio

Hi I would like to migrate an application from using Glib::Source (glibmm event loop) to use io_service instead. The application is using glib::sources for two job: - Drive lots of network IO connection - Process internal event which are generated in side the application it self. The Io part is easy to fit into asio, but I'm having problems seeing what the best way is to implement the core application event processing. Using glib::source I could register an interface where two function is called: bool prepare (int &timeout); bool dispatch (sigc::slot_base *slot); Prepare could set a time out identifying how much time should elapse before dispatch is ready to process an event. When the time is passed, the glib main loop will call the dispatch function, where I then can process the internal events. How can this be implemented in boost::asio io_service? I have look at the section 7.5 in http://en.highscore.de/cpp/boost/asio.htmlbut he is using a thread and a blocking call. Using a thread is not a solution in my case. I would rather like either polling, or some kind of scheduling... I any body has some hints, examples, advices it would be most appreciated. -- Allan W. Nielsen

[fusion]Is it possible to wrap a function template into a function object?

If there is a function template: template<typename T> T f(T t); then f is not a type and cannot be passed to fusion::for_each() as the second argument. But I can't write fusion::for_each(someSequence,&f<SomeType>) either since elements of someSequence has different types. While I can write f as a functor fo struct fo{ template<typename T> T operator()(T t); }; and call fusion::for_each(someSequence,fo()), sometimes I need to use function templates in libraries ( say, I have a fusion::vector whose elements are ranges ) and the only solution seems to be writing a lot of functors to wrap the function templates. I tried to find a wrapper class template that can wrap arbitary function templates to functors in boost but I didn't find any. Then I tried to write such a wrapper using constructs like template<template<typename T0> class F>struct temp_fun_1; but the code made my MSVC2008 compiler crash(really!). This is to announce that the Containers library by Ion Gaztanaga has been accepted into Boost. There were 11 positive reviews and one negative, many making the same points (see summary below). Acceptance is therefore conditional on Ion improving the documentation as the reviewers requested. Review comments summary: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Needs a better introduction/overview/tutorial in the docs: # what are stateful allocators, what's currently supported in this area, how is it supported, does it have performance implications. # Needs overview of the new containers - stable_vector, flat_* etc. # Needs description of recursive containers and why this library supports them but not C++03 containers. # Needs to justify why this library and not the std one (probably by mention of the above). * Make clear in the docs (if not already) what the default allocator is. * Make allocator template parameter name consistent. * Add basic_string::shrink_to_fit member function (from C++11). * Typo in range insertion docs (first/last vs i/j) * vector<bool> behavior needs to be documented (and justified either which way). * Need to document conformance to C++0x container requirements, plus use (or not) of new C++0x features such as std::allocator_traits. * Missing documentation for some deque member functions. * Missing Returns/Effects,Complexity or Throws. (ex: after No.23 in basic_string) * The "Acknowledgements" page is currently empty. There are various (c) notices in the source referring to sources from which parts of the code may have come. Problems matching parantheses in a string using boost::regex 1.42.0 on a amd64 debian system

DOWNTO ([0-9]*?)$;$"); to match strings like: SIGNAL W07: STD_LOGIC_VECTOR( 255 DOWNTO 0); My problem is that matching those parantheses in the string doesn't work - - I've tested the regexp under perl and it works fine but boost::regexp and C++ works only if I remove the brackets from the string and from the regular expression. Issues I observed & tested: 1) '$' ... '$' no match but g++ complains about an unknown escape sequence '\)'. 1a) Using '$' ... ')' doesn't match. (I would have expected an exception to be thrown but none whatsoever.) 2) '0x28' ... '0x29' doesn't match. (0x28 = ASCII '(', 0x29 = ASCII ')') 3) '\Q(\E' ... '\Q)\E' no match but g++ complains about an unknown escape sequence '\Q'. 4) If I try to match only one of the brackets and remove the other from the string & regex I get one of the following: '\(' ... gives me: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::regex_error> >' what(): Found a closing ) with no corresponding openening parenthesis. The error occured while parsing the regular expression fragment: '?([0-9]*?)>>>HERE>>>);$'. ... '$' gives me: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::regex_error> >' what(): Unmatched marking parenthesis ( or $. I am sure a lot of people successfully used boost::regex to match parantheses so I do wonder which part of the documentation I have missed. [iterator] [iterator_facade] Why is advance not defined for bidirectional iterators?

Hello *! I defined a custom bidi-iterator and assumed it was going to support std::advance(iterator, Difference n), where n can be negative for random access and bidirectional iterators. The definition of my iterator's facade base looks like: struct my_iter : boost::iterator_facade < my_iter , const byte , boost::bidirectional_traversal_tag , const byte > { // some impl stuff follows... }; My tests show that calling: advance(instance_of_my_iter, N) works fine (increment implementation is called) advance(instance_of_my_iter, -N) does not work, because increment (instead of decrement) is called as well While reading through the docs for iterator facade at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_46_0/libs/iterator/doc/iterator_facade.html I found the section iterator_facade Core Operations. For the advance implementation is stated there that it is only gets called for Random Access Iterators. C++ Standard clearly defines that N-Parameter to std::advance can be negative to random access and bidi iterators. Implementing void advance member in my_iter still results in the call to increment member. Can someone give me any suggestions or is it a bug in the iterator lib? My compiler is gcc 4.3 under Debian Linux with Kernal 2.6.26. and Boost 1.42. With Kind Regards, Ovanes

[NEWBIE] [BGL] Compile error while using greedy graph coloring example v1.47.0

Hello all, I'm a newbie to using Boost Graph Libraries for my project. I was reading the documentation, and tried implementing the greedy graph coloring algorithm that is presented in the following webpage: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/graph/doc/constructing_algorithms… I get compile errors involving the following lines of code: function_requires< IntegerConcept<ColorType> >(); function_requires< size_type, ReadablePropertyMapConcept<Order> >(); typedef typename same_type<OrderType, vertex_descriptor>::type req_same; I understand that the first two function_requires calls are concept checks, and I don't know what the use of the third line is, as req_same is never used. [Boost.Build] Problem with the Boost library support module

Hi, I have compiled Boost.Buildv2 from the Boost V1.47 sources and have successfully compiled the Boost libraries with it. Now I want to use BBv2 in my own project, which uses the Boost libraries. So I tried using the Boost library support module: I added to my user-config.jam: using boost : 1.47 : <include>C:/boost_1_47_0/boost <library>C:/boost_1_47_0/stage/lib ; and to my project's jamroot file: import boost ; boost.use-project 1.47 ; I installed BBv2 to C:/boost_1_47_0/bjam and added this to the PATH. Calling bjam gives me the following error message, because it can't find the support module (I assume): boost.jam: No such file or directory C:/boost_1_47_0/bjam/share/boost-build/build\toolset.jam:38: in toolset.using rule boost.init unknown in module toolset.
