Using boost with explicit template instance

We have built a C++ library using Boost and when we try to integrate the library in a binary we are having problem in linking because of “--instances=explicit” option used for building the binary. The problem is, when we use --instances=explicit option (of Sun CC compiler) it expects us to instantiate the templates explicitly. As Boost internally uses templates when we use Boost with this option the linker is throwing “Undefined symbol” errors - which is expected as we are not instantiating the templates used in Boost explicitly. Though I understand why the linker is throwing the error here, it looks tricky to instantiate all boost templates explicitly in the code. So, want to check if there any solution/workaround to use Boost with “-instances=explicit” option of Sun CC compiler. Any help is much appreciated. We can reproduce the problem with simple sample code as - #include<iostream> #include<boost/lexical_cast.hpp> intmain() { std::cout<<boost::lexical_cast<int>(“8”)<<std::endl; } With “--instances=explicit” option Undefined first referenced symbol in file __type_0 boost::detail::lexical_cast<unsigned,std::string,false,char>(__type_0,__type_3*,unsigned) lexical.o ld:fatal:Symbolreferencing errors.Nooutput written to a.outWithout “--instances=explicit” option this works fine

ptr_vector<> and vector<shared_ptr<>> compatibility

Hi, today i had to switch from ptr_vector<MyType> to vector<shared_ptr<MyType> > (needed weak_ptr's to these elements somewhere else). Unfortunately the interfaces of these two containers are quite different when it comes to element access, e.g., ptr_vector<MyType> returns a reference to MyType vs. vector<shared_ptr<MyType> >operator[] returns a reference to a shared_ptr<MyType>. In my case i had a hard time replacing countless occurrences of "BOOST_FOREACH(MyType& e, getMyTypeContainerFromSomewhere())". I'am wondering whats your opinion about a shared_ptr_vector<> that will comply to a ptr_sequence_adapter, using shared_ptr<> to store the elements, and including the possibility to get access to the shared_ptr<> ? Is there any reason why such a container is a bad idea (and thus not already part of the library)? greetings Jan

[MPL] return type

Dear Boost experts, I'm trying to find a solution to the following problem. I'm iterating over an MPL sequence and once I found the appropriate type in the sequence I call a static function that returns a pointer to a newly created object that I need to return to the caller of the ModelDispatcher::parse member function with its exact type. In other words I need to propagate the exact type of the object created somewhere in a recursive chain of function calls back to the original caller. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to specify the return type of this recursive function. [Graph] troubles with pointer properties

Hello everyone, my first post here, so I hope not to miss some mailing list rule. I'm experiencing some problems in using graph internal properties. I have to generate a graph from a database and I need to differentiate nodes in my graph, namely I will have 2 different node categories, say cat1_node and cat2_node. Each category should have its own property attached. Ex: say N1 is a cat1_node and N2 is a cat2_node. I want N1 to have a "name" (string) property while N2 a "length" (int) property and both have a "label" (string) property. To achieve this I though I could use inheritance in the following manner: //FATHER PROPERTY CLASS class generic_vertex_property{ public: generic_vertex_property(){type = 0;} int type; std::string label; }; //SON PROPERTY CLASS class cat1_property: public generic_vertex_property{ public: std::string name; }; //SON PROPERTY CLASS class cat2_property: public generic_vertex_property{ public: int length; }; In this way, I though, I can define my graph something like: typedef adjacency_list< vecS, vecS, directedS, property<vertex_p_t, generic_vertex_property*> > Graph; and add new vertices like: cat1_property *v1 = new cat1_property(); cat2_property *v2 = new cat2_property(); v1->label = "v1_label"; v1->name = "v1_name"; v2->label = "v2_label"; v2->length = 10; add_vertex(VertexProperty(v1),G); add_vertex(VertexProperty(v2),G); This actually compiles and runs without errors. In the meanwhile here are my questions: Is it possible to do what I want to do? Is there a way to get a property map with the "original" object types (as inserted)? Do you have some good websites with practical examples, code snippets and so on about BGL? Last question comes as, in my opinion, the reference manual is quite complete, but 1) lot of examples are not compiling ( look like they have not been updated to the last boost version) 2) examples are usually very basic and it is very hard to get the general rules behind it. hope someone can help me out with this. bests, Paolo

bind with weak_ptr

I see many posts when I google this problem. I wonder, since most of them are dated 1.35 and previous, if there was ever a solution to this problem? I think this fellow says it best when he posted, "My problem is, that when i bind member functions, if i specify the instance of the class as a shared_ptr, then i get memory leaks because the binding's shared_ptr to the instance keeps it alive, and it potentially produces cyclic references that in the current model, would be complicated to break. And of course, if i use raw pointers to the binding instances, then i'll get a crash if the instance has been destroyed and i try to execute the binding function. So what i would need, is to use bind with weak pointers, and just do nothing if locking it fails." http://www.gamedev.net/topic/494089-help-boostbind-and-shared-pointers/ I've almost went to just using raw pointers and letting the program crash if the instance to which the member bound no longer exists. I hate to do that.

Hi all, I believe that there is a bug in eps_tolerance implementation. At line 34 of toms748_solve.hpp one can see: return (fabs(a - b) / (std::min)(fabs(a), fabs(b))) <= eps; When both a and b equal zero this condition is evaluated to a false instead of a true. Left hand of condition is NaN and the right one is a floating- point number hence the result is false. Well obviously, a user wants to see true here because the relative length of interval in this case tend to zero.

testing command-line interface using Boost.Test

Dear all, I've been using Boost.Test with Test First and TTD approaches to library development and am one happy hacker. All tests are integrated with our continuous integration setup so we get test reports with every build. Now I'm starting on a few command-line utilities and would like to use Boost.Test to do the same. I have something simple going now with a test fixture to help with redirecting standard input, output and error and running commands in a way that the test runner does not hang when a command-line invocation returns a failure status. The gist of my tests would be as follows when testing the GNU coreutils `true` and `false` utilities BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE (test_false) { BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL (EXIT_FAILURE, my_system ("false")); } BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE (test_true) { BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL (EXIT_SUCCESS, my_system ("true")); } where my_system() basically does explicitly what system() would do for you. See [1] for an implementation of my_system(). When using system() instead of my_system(), the test runner fails the first test incorrectly(!) and hangs. It starts but never finishes the second test. Using my_system() the first tests still incorrectly fails but now at least the second tests completes and succeeds as expected. The first test produces unknown location(0): fatal error in "test_false": child has exited; pid: 19788; uid: 1000; exit value: 1 and I assume it never gets to the comparison that BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL() is supposed to do. Any suggestions on how to get this to work? Maybe even alternative approaches to testing command-line interfaces? Boost.Thread and thread-priority

Hi, I have a question about thread priority in combination with Boost.Thread. I implemented a pool of threads that reads data-pkts from a work-queue in user-space. The main-thread receives data-packets from the kernel, copies them into user-space and places them in this data-queue. It is important that the kernel buffers do not overflow and therefor I thought raising the priority of the main-thread is a good idea. My question is would this *really* help? And how do I change priority with Boost.Thread? Cheers, Andrej

Hi I'm trying to install boost 1.47 in a single threaded edition but it does not seems to work. Hi, I am doing C++ multithreaded coding on Linux. Each thread hold some messagers, who need to talk (exchange message) to other messagers. Each messager is not only a message pruducer but also a message consumer. If a messager needs to talk to another messager and both of them are held by the same thread , that is intra-hread talk. Otherwise, it is inter-thread talk. A messager can generate multiple messages, each of which has a distinct message-receiver ID. Each messager needs to do some computing tasks in order to produce a message. Only the messager with match ID can receive and consume the message. All messagers work asynchronously and the message exchange (like a multicast) pairs are fixed and do not change in the whole process of the program. In order to simulate the above message exchange, I want to associate a priority message queue with each thread such that (1) Each messager in a priority queue is an element. Whenever a messager's computing task is done and its message is ready for sending out, it has the highest priority and it is poped out and saved in a map with the messager's receiver ID as key. (2) Then, the messager is push backed to the queue again and wait for receiving messgae from its talk pairs and do the above step (1). (3) each thread is associated with a queue like this. Sometimes, do inter-thread talk and some times do intra-thread talk. My questions: How to efficiently implement the above idea with boost data containers, thread, thread pool, boost algorithm or other boost components ? Are there other better ways to simulate the talk ? Any help, advice or idea is really appreciated. Thanks

Hi, i would like to know why it is, that there is no documentation about boost/graph/graph_utility.hpp Functions like 'print_graph' or 'print_edges' are used quite often in the examples, for instance here http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/libs/graph/doc/filtered_graph.html For a newbie, as i am, it is always confusing to have to deal with undocumented functions. How should i start in such a case. I finally did something like find ./ | xargs grep print_edges inside of my boost directory. Boost IPC shared queue

Hi, I am trying to build a shared queue between a reader and writer thread of my process. I am creating a managed shared memory segment, defining an allocator on top and using the same to initialize a shared queue. I have a question related to the edge case, considering there is a disparity in the speed of the reader and writer threads and the writer thread pumps in more data than the shared segment size, what is the expected behavior of the queue? Will it allocate a new memory segment or block the writer thread or throw an exception? Are there any links or references for the same? Hello For simplicity, say I have this: class Animal { int id; }; class Dog : public Animal { int tag; }; class Cat : public Animal { int lives; }; offset_ptr<Dog> a = segment.construct<Dog>(anonymous_instance)(); offset_ptr<Animal> b; b = a; Also assume I have a correctly setup managed_shared_memory called segment. Is there anyway I can delete the constructed object using b? I tried segment.destroy_ptr(b.get()) and segment.deallocate(b.get()) but I get assertion failures. Obviously segment.destroy_ptr(a.get()) would work but I'd like to be able to do it with a pointer to the parent class. Also casting won't work because I won't know if it's a dog or a cat when I delete it. Thanks for any suggestions!

[property_tree] Writing comments in JSON format

Hi there, by trying it out with a modified debug_settings example, I can see that property_tree accepts Javascript ("//") comments inside of the JSON files it parses. I want to find out whether it makes sense to use JSON as an alternative to boost.program_options for configuration files. The idea would be to use a JavaScript-based GUI to modify or create the configuration files in a comfortable way and to use the same files as input for my C++-based programs. As my configuration files are auto-generated by my objects and not everybody loves GUIs, I need to be able to add comments to a property_tree object, so that they are emitted during a "write_json" call. The easiest way to add comments to the config files would be to just add a "comment" data member. This would indeed be very useful for the JavaScript usecase, as comments can be integrated into the GUI / Browser, and would still give guidance to those wanting to modify the JSON files with a standard editor. However, this does not help me to write things like a header, or to add information targeted only at those who modify the files by hand. For these I still need to be able to generate "//"-style comments. From the documentation I could not find out whether this can be done in a standard and portable way. The real problem is 1). because if I have access to all the classes I will reach a point in which I have to read a built-in class from the iarchive, but I have have access to those nested elements directly, at least not with the documented interface. Hi all, I'm currently converting cppunit tests to Boost.Test. Boost test auto-registration is awesome ! I'm now facing a problem and need help from Boost community. mytest -> libFoo.so -> libBar.a Let's say I have a dynamic library Foo which depends on a static library Bar. I created an executable mytest which uses Foo library. It doesn't know about Bar library. So far, I successfully created test cases in mytest for Foo library using the public library interface (exported symbols). I just figured out how to create test cases inside Foo library (for internal non-exported classes) using console_test_runner utility. Question: how do I test code inside Bar static library ? I've got some problem with the shared_ptr usage in my library. I am suspecting its in combination with boost::bind. What happens when a boost::function is called and has been created with a (method, instance) combination, but the instance no longer exists? What happens when this is in combination with boost::asio::io_service? Here is my suspect code: B::SharedPtr me = boost::dynamic_pointer_cast<B, A>(shared_from_this()); callback = boost::bind(&B::Foo, me, boost::asio::placeholder::error); // this is a boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor acceptor.async_accept(socket_, callback); Now suppose I use a raw pointer instead. Now suppose the instance that just got bound was destroyed before the accept happened. What will be the result? I'd try to just type up a test myself, but this requires alot of foundation code.

I've gotten myself into a situation. I've got a class A that created class Bs class B needs to register callbacks to the class A that created it. So I made member variables in class B that are boost::function type class A binds the method to be called and hands that to class B on construction So, not class A always has a reference count and cannot be destoryed. I tried passing a weak_ptr to boost::bind instead and it won't compile. what to do?

I posted an async_accept to my io_service. The async_accept gets posted again to listen for incoming connections every time it completes. I was under the impression that calling io_service::stop, would be the way to stop listening. When debugging, I see that a function object was created when I called bind inside my async_accept call. That function object contains a smart pointer to the instance of the object to whom the method to call back belongs. Since the callback never happens, my instance never gets destroyed. How do I effectively cancel any outstanding work the io_service has posted to it, such that the smart pointer in the function object that the bind created will lose its reference count? In debugging, the callback never gets called after stop, not does the reference count in the smart pointer decrement.

I'm learning network programming and boost asio on my own, so there's something I need clarification in my understanding.. In synchronous model, when a client connects to the server, both the client and server have to sync with each other to finish some operations. Meanwhile, the asynchronous model allows client and server to work separated and independently. The client sends a request to establish a connection and do something. While the server is processing the request, the client can do something else. Upon completion of an operation, the completion event is placed onto a queue in an Event Demultiplexer, waiting for a Proactor (such as HTTP Handler) to send the request back and invoke a Completion Handler (on the client). The terms are used as in boost::asio document The Proactor Design Pattern: Concurrency Without Threads<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_47_0/doc/html/boost_asio/overview/core/asyn…> . By working this way, the asynchronous model can accepts simultaneous connections without having to create a thread per connection, thus improve overall performance. In order to achieve the same effect as asynchronous model, the first model (synchronous) must be multi-threaded. For more detail, refer to: Proactor Pattern<http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBsQFjAA&url=http…>(I actually learn proactor pattern which is used to asynchronous model from that document. In here it has description on a typical synchronous I/O web server). Is my understanding on the subject correct? If so, which means the asynchronous server can accepts request and return results asynchronously (the first connection request the service on web server does not need to be the first to reply to)? In essence, asynchronous model does not use threading (or threading is used in individual components, such as in the Proactor, Asynchronous Event Multiplexer (boost::asio document) component, not by creating an entire client-server application stack, which is describe in the multi-threaded model in Proactor Pattern document, section 2.2 - *Common Traps and Pitfalls of Conventional Concurrency Models*).

Cross Compilation problem

Hello all, I have been struggling with this problem for 2 days and I cannot really find a solution. I have a c++ application that I want to cross compile under Fedora 15 to use it with Windows. The packages that my app depends on are already pre-compiled in : /usr/i686-mingw32...../ I am using CMake. It compiles okay and I generate the .exe file without problems. When I try to run it under Windows it complains : "The program cant start because boost_filesystem-gcc45-mt-1_46_1.dll ins missing......." I have boost 1.47 installed in the windows machine but the libraries have a different suffix (...vc-xx-mt...) When I cross compile I do it statically ( I am attaching my toolchain-mingw32 file ) My question is, why is the exe program looking for the boost dll with exactly the same name as it has in the linux machine where the cross compiled exe has been built from?? In my fedora mingw32 lib folder the boost libraries look like this : libboost_filesystem-gcc45-mt-1_46_1.dll·a Is there any way to tell cmake to disregard those suffixes while running in Windows? Is there any way to tell cmake to copy the boost libraries needed for my application into a local folder that will be included inside the the windows installer?? Hello *, I currently ran accross an issue, where I need to exclude some particular test cases. I think this can be a useful extension for Boost.Test FW. Would be interesting to hear Gennadiy's opinion and what others think. I also came accross this link, where an extension for Boost Test is implemented to run/exclude platform-dependent tests. asio error codes

I am implementing tcp conections using boost asio. I don't see in the documentation anything that says which error code could result from the various asynchronous calls. Obviously, I would have to identify all connection related error codes and set the state of my process such that a reconnect was the way to handle it. In some cases a retry might be needed. However, I don't see a way to get a list of the possible error codes that need to get checked for aside from hours and hours of debugging trial and error. Does there exist somewhere a list of error codes that could result from async_read? which would I get from async_write?, async_accept? etc..etc. I see it is a sytem::error_code, and I can look at the header, I can even find a doc that lists all of them and see asio has a group, but I can't tell which might occur when.

How to change the default enums serialization in Boost.Serialization

It looks like this: MyType * pMy = my_segment->construct<MyType>(anonymous_instance)(); my_segment->destroy_ptr(pMy); Where *MyType* is some typical struct and *my_segment* is correctly constructed *boost::interprocess::managed_shared_memory ** is around 10 times slower than the equivalent: MyType * pMy = new MyType(); delete pMy; I did not expect this. I though the two allocation algorithms should be similar in implementation and performance. Is there some good reason for such a huge difference. Edit: The test was conducted over a huge number of iterations.

Hallo! I'm getting build errors with ICC 12.1.0 that appear to be related to BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT. This is with boost 1.46.1.1 as available in Debian. Before I got this far I had to disable rvalue references in config/compiler/intel.hpp. /usr/include/boost/type_traits/type_with_alignment.hpp(206): error: member "boost::detail::type_with_alignment_imp<Align>::found" is not a type name BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT(found >= Align); ^ /usr/include/boost/type_traits/common_type.hpp(91): error: expected a type specifier BOOST_COMMON_TYPE_STATIC_ASSERT(sizeof(T) > 0, BOOST_COMMON_TYPE_MUST_BE_A_COMPLE_TYPE, (T)); ^ Folloed by several more problems in BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT. I also checked that boost::adjacency_list match the VertexListGraph concept both, using boost::vecS and boost::listS as it VertexListS type argument. Any response is appreacited!

Hi, I usualy add flag -Wall to gnu g++ compilation while developing. I want to make a callback that also calls back. I cannot get the code to compile. I forced at least one shared pointer to be created, by making factory methods from base on up the class hierarchy. I read on google that you can only use shared_from_this on ONE class type in a class hierarchy. I did not understand the details of why. following a peer's advice, I enabled_shared_from_this on the base class and attempted to cast it in the derived class methods, getting the result that I did. I am trying to use a smart pointer here, following the example code for boost::asio::ip::tcp, assuming that I want to ensure the instance of 'ths' is alive between the time of the async call and the time it completes! I do not see a way to do this when using a class hierarchy. My base classes do similar async calls and try to handle it similarlly, so I cannot enable_shared_from_this only on the most derived. As there is no guarentee that only the most derived will be instantiated. I have more than 3 classes in the inheritance hierarchy, any of which could be instantiated. TcpBase - holds the socket and a smart pointer to the io_service TcpConnection - Adds Write and Read methods TcpClientConnection - Adds Connect method TcpServerConnection - Does not have connect, but can only be instantiated by a TcpListener - Accepts connections and creates TcpServerConnections Any of these, except the very base can be instantiated. How do I work around this problem?

I use the following function on a regular basis: template < class P_T > P_T const &same (P_T const &p) { return p; } I use it for two purposes: 1. to pass an identity function to an API that expects a unary function, 2. to help the compiler identify the right chain of type conversions. The standard uses static_cast for (2), which could be used but it disables some compile-time verification so I would rather not use static_cast when not absolutely necessary. I have been unable to find a corresponding feature in Boost (although the value factory comes close). Do you think adding such a function to Boost utilities would be worthwhile? Chris

question regarding Depth First Search algorithm

Hi, My name is Pablo Fleurquin.I am a student of M.Sc in Physics at the UIB (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) and I'm also working in the IFISC institute (Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Complex Systems). I have a question regarding the Depth First Search algorithm. Ihave beenlooking at the Boost library page but I'm a newbie with this stuff. *Having a directed graph G (that could be a connected graph or not), I want my program to find the cycles within the graph and remove all the edges that are part of them. It doesn't matter which cycle is erased first as long as the result is the graph G without edge that formely were part of a cycle (in other words, the remaining edges are those that doesn´t form cycles) [attached is example1]* Intuitively, I am sure that using the depth_first_search() function and recalling it recursively for each "new" graph G "with less" cycles will finally arrive to graph G with no cycles. The problem is that I have the idea, but my knowledge of c++ is not so vast to implement this code. I would be gratefully, if you could show me a code for this implementation or a function that does that. Thank you. Pablo Fleurquin P.S: Example 2 is a situation that might happen. If the code can be implemented to eliminate these 2 cycles that share a link it would be greate, if not it will work fine as well.

class initialization problem

I have a Server class inherited from a Listener class, with the latter being bases on the boost::asio example code. My problem is that the Listener class requires am boost::asio::io_service & in order to initialize its member variables. I wanted the Server class to be responsible for starting a thread, owning the io_service, and running it. It seems I cannot do that! class Server : public Listener { public: Server() : Listener(ioService_) { } // Snip protected: boost::asio::io_service ioService_; }; class Listener { public: Listener(boost::asio::io_service & ioService) : socket_(ioService) { } // Snip protected: boot::asio::ip::tcp::socket socket_; }; The above throws an unhandled exception in the initialization of the derived class. I suppose this is because ioService_ is not constructed yet? Since the C++ rules, if I remember correctly, say the base class gets constructed before the members of the derived? So, I tried: Server() : ioService_(), Listener(ioService_) { } to try and force it, but it still throws an exception. The only way to get it to not throw an exception is to create the instance to io-service in main() and then pass it as a reference into the class constructor. If I do that, then there is no way for any class in my inheritance hierarchy to own the io_service. As such, I cannot start and stop it either. Is there any way to get ownership of the io_service in my class hierarchy?

[accumulators] Kahan algorithmic variants of sum_impl, mean_impl?

That can fall prey to numerical errors if the sum is large and the value is small. A slower but more precise summation is possible using the Kahan summation algorithm [2]. Has anyone implemented a Kahan-based variant for either sum_impl or mean_impl [3]? Assuming not, other than to mimic existing code, any implementation suggestions? One gotcha for Kahan summation is that optimization levels employing additive associativity can spoil the computation. Are there other places in the Boost sources where this has become an issue and where I might look for a portable way around it? I have not tried later versions of gcc. What I have found is that old UNIX vendors(HPUX/IBM/ etc) are struggling with boost. This is not all surprising, since the boost developers do not have access. to these compilers, and even if they did, those compilers really struggle with advanced meta-programming techniques use in boost. Adding support for boost for them is a *major* undertaking, in time and resource. Hence they appear to have given up. From what I recall HPUX made a song and dance about support at boost 1.35, But have been silent ever since. If you are using any of these platforms, then do not make any assumption about boost. The organisation I work for is slowly migrating away from HPUX, in favour of linux. I suppose this is little consolation. Since you have a trial version of this compiler, can you submit the compilation failures as bugs/regressions ? Failing that you could isolate the boost libs you want to use, and see if you can fix the issues yourself or get help from the boost author. Either way it will likely entail some effort. ipc message_queue getting permission denied

Hello, I ran across this problem when I moved my code to another system. Not sure if this is the right list to post this, but I've been having trouble debugging this as all of my attempts have lead me to dead ends. I have the following code with boost 1.47: try { m_messageQueue = boost::shared_ptr<boost::interprocess::message_queue>( new boost::interprocess::message_queue ( boost::interprocess::open_or_create ,name.c_str() //name ,numElements //max message number ,sizeof(Message) //max message size )); } catch(boost::interprocess::interprocess_exception &e) { cerr << e.what(); } where name="test_queue", numElements=100, and sizeof(Message)=256. The output is: Permission denied If I run as user root, it will pass. I can't figure out where it is trying to write to where it would have a permission error. Looking at the boost code, shouldn't it just be in /tmp/boost_interprocess which any user would have access to create and write to? Also, I noticedhttps://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/4250, but this should be fixed now. Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

I have been using boost 1.45 on HP-UX using the acc compiler. Have used the following libs: asio, serialisation, file-system,data-time,program-options, shared_ptr spirit(classic) You need to test each library yourself. since as you have discovered boost is not officially supported on HP-UX. So I've got a few ptr_container instances floating around, and have just tracked down a bug caused by (my) naff code essentially akin to the following: ptr_vector<int> vi; ptr_vector<string> vs; bool eq = (vi.begin() == vs.begin()); After digging I discovered the operator in question in void_ptr_iterator.hpp: template< class VoidIterT, class T, class VoidIterU, class U > inline bool operator==( const void_ptr_iterator<VoidIterT,T>& l, const void_ptr_iterator<VoidIterU,U>& r ) What is the reason for implementing comparison between different iterator types? I have a few guesses but unsure of whether they're sensible ones or not! Of course disallowing comparison between differing pointer types won't save people from comparing iterators from different containers, but I think it's a little too easy to fall into this trap, and difficult to spot the error once written in. (The equality comparison was an unlikely case, and fortunately found it during thorough unit testing :-) ) Is there any sensible way to suppress this behaviour, or are there any comments on why I might be being a muppet? I have not tested this with later version of boost or gcc. As I have stated in my previous email, I have successfully used boost 1.45 on HP-UX. bjam: how to rename during install

I am building a python extension : python-extension my_ext : [ glob src/*.cpp ] ; However during install I want to rename this to '_my_ext' It appears that there is no way for install to rename the target. Base64 encoding

I followed a recipe for using Boost libraries to perform a base64-encoding of some data, as explained here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7053538/how-do-i-encode-a-string-to-base…) However, it gives the wrong result. For example, I expect a string to end with "…8EAA==" and instead I get a total length two chars shorter, ending with "…8EAM". More use of google turns up that boost::archive::iterators::base64_from_binary only works for inputs that are a multiple of three bytes, and I can't find any proper documentation on how to use this. Is there function that wraps base64_from_binary that works on any input? Or is it not worth trying to use this Boost library at all? Thanks, —John

As you say its more of a windows question rather than a boost one see http://www.codesynthesis.com/~boris/blog/2010/01/18/dll-export-cxx-template… or any other result from a google search of template dll export. However if you are in full control of your project and can ensure consistent use of heap (/MD), exception handling and can always be 100% certain that all the dlls are compiled with the same version of the vs compiler you can just ignore the warnings (#pragma warning is always useful : - ) ) and things will sort of work - till they just don't at some point when someone breaks the rules above - so I wouldn't recommend it for production code. C4251 needs to have dll-interface

This might be more of a windows question, but... Everytime I use a boost template as part of a class interface that is exported from a dll, I get this compiler warning. For example I just cut and paste the TcpServer example from boost::asio::ip::tcp into a test project dll. I get: warning C3251: 'boost_enable_shared_from_this<T>::weak_this_':class 'boost::weak_ptr<T> ' needs to have a dll-interface to be used by clients of class 'boost::enable_shared_from_this<T>' It comes from the line: class __declspec(dllexport) TcpConnection : public boost::enable_shared_from_this<TcpConnection> { public: typedef boost::shared_ptr<TcpConnection> SmartPtr; . . . }; How do I solve these types of errors? Currently, I just include the correspnding boost header in the client project and igore the warnings, but I'd really like to get rid of them. Should I be including the boost headers and library in the client project? Doesn't the client project get what it needs from the dll, when the dll includes the headers and library?

Hi All, I have a warning when compiling some code using a condition variable (unused variable in boost/thread/pthread/condition_variable.hpp on line 53). It seems there is a patch for it but it has not been applied to 1.47.0 despite being quite old: https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/attachment/ticket/4818/boost-thread-pthrea… I have tested the patch it works for me (Ubuntu / GCC 4.5 / -Wall). Class version exception during load

Hi all, I'm trying to create a class with built in save and load methods that handles serializing and deserializing data to disk to persist the class. I've been able to get the save working, but I'm having some trouble with the load. I getting the below error. error: Failure in UserObjectSerialization: Unhandled exception: class version I've done some googling on it and can't find any documentation that seems to apply in my situation. I'm not using any of the versioning features built into boost, as this is mostly an experiment to get familar with the library. Pieter, In general, equations like these have an implicit offset, so what you really want is T_rel = T_abs - T_offs, as you have written. Especially if it is empirically-derived, polynomial expansions are often used implicitly - that is, the model equations are essentially intended to represent a Taylor (or some other) series expansion. As Steven pointed out, Kelvin is a special case because the offset is defined as zero. These expansions are always done around a specific point and, if you look at the equations for the expansions themselves you will see that they are dimensionally consistent : f(T-T_offs) ~ f(T_offs) + f'(T_offs) (T-T_offs)/1! + f''(T_offs)(T-T_offs)/2! + … -> Unit ~ Unit + Unit/Kelvin (Kelvin) + Unit/Kelvin^2 (Kelvin)^2 + … should also make sense if you change the unit of temperature to something else, which is what you would be doing if you wanted to scale by 0.015...this is only possible if you use relative temperatures. One way to think about it is to try to rewrite the equation so it works correctly if temperatures are specified in Celsius - clearly, you will have to introduce both an offset and a scale factor to get the correct behavior... boost 1.47.0, os/x 10.6.8, gcc-4.2.1 apple build, 64bit I can read a tiff, get its raw buffer, fool around with it and write it back out as tiff, no problem, but is it possible to get/write the resolution? I understand that the res doesn't matter to the pixel content, but it *does* matter to some image processing chains. I know tiff tags support it, separately for x and y, and with different units, e.g. dpi, so I know I *could* descend to libtiff and do it there, but for me that would defeat the purpose of using GIL in the first place. thx dxc

Hi, In my project, every vertex represents a self-defined structure as as basic block. It seems property(e.g., vertex_name_t) can only map a vertex to enum, i.e, integer. Is it possible to map a vertex to a pointer or struct? Even if I define a new vertex_xxx_t, it can also only map to enum. I appreciate your reply. regards, Ice

hi, I just built and installed boost using the following on cygwin ./bootstrap.sh --with-libraries=chrono,date_time,exception,filesystem,graph,graph_parallel,iostreams,math,program_options,random,serialization,signals,system,test,thread,wave link=static link=shared threading=single threading=multi then I ran the below, ./b2 --layout=tagged and the message indicated that it: failed updating 2 targets and skipped 7 targets.... but I continued and ran./b2 --layout=tagged install however, I look in /usr/local/lib and I only have those libraries with suffix -mt My programs are looking for the libraries without the -mt suffix. Can you please let me know what I need to do to get those libraries. thanks!

Hi, I am serializing a bunch of object that contains boost.units quantities. Boost.Units provides serialization for quantities already. By default, the output file looks ok but I would like to add a class name to the object description. Current, serializing quantity<si::length> q produces: <q class_id="0" tracking_level="1" version="0" object_id="_0"> <value>5</value> </q> Which doesn't give any information about the quantity at hand, not even for the human reading it. So, I tried to use BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID to register a name for the serialized class, but it is ignored. Ideally I would like to have something like this, with a class_name description for example: <q class_id="0" class_name = "quantity_si_length" tracking_level="1" version="0" object_id="_0"> <value>5</value> </q> Is something like this possible? boost variant question

Hi, I am new to the boost variant and have the following issue. I have, two numeric vector-like structures (say a contiguous and a strided – the actual problem has many more), and would like to create a variant of those two to use interchangeably in my code. Then plan is to have different constructors for different hosted structures and play with deriving-from/containing a variant These structures, being stl-like have iterators. Is there a mechanism to export the iterator that corresponds to the structure hosted in the variant and use it? Would I have along-side a variant of the corresponding iterators – if this is possible at all? Is there a –preferrably elegant, nut necessarily efficient- solution to this? boost multithread C++ program design for low-latency large-data exchange

Hi, I am trying to solve a network flow problem by C++ multithreading. Given a network (all nodes are connected by arcs, each arc is connected to 2 and only 2 ending nodes, one is input node and another is output node, each node can have multiple input arcs and output arcs), each node needs to do some computing and then exchange computing result data to its connected input and output nodes. Multiple nodes can be grouped into one task, which is run by one thread. In this way, the whole network computing workload can be partitioned into multiple tasks. All these tasks are pushed into a boost thread pool such that all threads can run the tasks at the same time. But, if a node (in a thread task) needs to do data exchange with another node (in another thread task), there is a synchronization problem. Data receiver needs to wait for data available in the data buffer of the data sender. My proram needs to partition the network such that each thread's task workload is assigned as evenly as possible. If all threads share the one-large data buffer structure, the program parallelism is not good because the critical section is too large. Some threads have to wait the the one-large data buffer structure unlocked even though the part of the data structure (which is useful to them ) has been available for read or write. For example, the one-large data buffer structure has the following buffer cells: cell1 , cell2, cell3 , cell4. When thread 1 is trying to write cell 1, it must lock the whole data buffer structure so that thread 2 cannot read or write cell 2 and so on. So, I want to break the one-large data buffer structure into multiple distinct data cells according to the thread number so that each cell holds the data only needed by one thread task. For example, if we have 2 threads, we create 2 data cells that hold data needed by the 4 thread separately. If we have 4 threads, we create 4 data cells that hold data needed by the 4 thread separately. and so on. My questions are: (1) How to design the data cell ? You can see that its size is based on the number of threads. (2) How to reduce synchronization overhead ? The critical section is small but the overhead of geting and releasing mutex may be very high if the inter-node data exchange frequency is high. (3) When a node's computing is done and data is written to its cell how to notify the data receiver node such that the notification messgae is only received by the waiting thread that run the receiver node computing task. All other unrelated nodes and threads are not impacted. The program is very time-sensitive and the latency of message exchange should be controlled very toughly and reduced as much as possible. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks

Hello, A little background, we've got Visual Studio 2008 C++/CLI library through which we'd like to expose a dictionary-mapped data abstraction. We'd like to be able to ask some questions about the dictionary mapping, whether for its keys, values, or some combination thereof. I've got a strong background in C# particularly with regard to its Generic Collections and the Linq area. This is how I'd like to think of the dictionary questions. The rub of course is that the support for C++/CLI Linq is rather slim, if at all. Does boost offer something along these lines comparable to Linq? Thanks... Best regards, Michael

Now I create a derivate class with class myderivate : public mysuperclass {} and call myderivate y; myclass x; x.mymethod( y ); The compiler breaks with the error, that myobj is a class with pure virtual methods. How I can call the bind methods with the correct object? myobj is an object of the derivated class so I would "send them" to the methods. Thanks Phil

Hi All This doesn't work. template<typename T> struct S { typename disable_if<is_const<T>, int>::type mutating_method(); }; I understand why not, although only after the compiler threw it out, but obviously (in hindsight), the method itself is not a template, so can't be selectively instantiated. The question is whether and how I can achieve the effect I'm after, ie., that the method is not present if the struct is instantiated with a const type? Thx, Rob.

Boost::object_pool - Memory allocation problems

Compiled with Visual Studio 2010. The purpose of the class is not important. It is its size (48 bytes) that matters. The goal is to use object_pool to minimize memory usage. When running this code the memory rises with just a few bytes more than the needed 48 bytes * 2.097.120 = 100.661.760 bytes, hence the object_pool seems to be working fine. But if I increase the number of elements created by one (to 2097121) the memory use rises to a massive 200.000.000+ bytes. It seems that the object_pool has reached a threshold and that the strategy then is to double the allocated memory. But this can't be right, can it? If so the object_pool is useless because it's using more memory than a simple test* tst = new test(); would have done. Why is object_pool acting like this and is there a way to change the behavior? PS! The threshold value is not exactly the same in another application I have made, but it is pretty close. Best Regards Christian Berg

Compilation of boost on HP-UX 11iv3 using aCC

Hi All, I am trying to compile boost 1.45.0 on HP-UX with HP compiler ( acc ) having version A.06.26. OS version : HP-UX 11iV3 on IA-64 _Question_ : Does anyone has experience of compiling boost with aCC compiler ? Does boost listed aCC as supported compilers ? As I tried to compile and compilation failed at points generating errors. I need to use boost for some production level software and if such issues occur, I wonder i may not be able to use boost on HP-UX. I earlier thought for using gcc, but it is no longer supported on HP-UX and it is risky to use it for production work. Please provide some directions in this regard. It will be immensely helpful for me.
