Dear Friends, I have almost similar kind of program typedef std::vector<int> vec_name; struct network { boost::variant<vec_name> net_id; }; typedef std::vector<network>network_list; in main when I am extracting content of network_list vector in the following manner // create the instance for vector network_list net_list; for(int i=0; i<net_list.size(); ++i) { unsigned char* query_str = net_list[0].net_id; } when I am doing like this in the above line of code the bellow error is giving , but what I understand is I am not properly typecasting. Interrupting interprocess::message_queue::receive

Hi all, I am receiving messages from a message_queue via the blocking receive(...)-method from a separate boost::thread. When I interrupt this thread, the receive(...)-method never returns (not even with an thread::thread_interrupted exception). Am i doing something wrong or could this be a bug in message_queue? Does io_service::post() block while io_service is busy?

I have a question about the behaviour of asio::io_service when it comes to executing previously posted work while trying to post even more work. I have two threads, one of which is the worker thread that runs io_service::run() and the other one that runs with a high priority and uses io_service::post() to relay processing of incoming requests via network to the worker thread (this has to be fast). The question is: When the worker thread is currently executing work (of which there may be a lot) which the high priority thread previously posted to it, is the io_service locked?; so that calls to io_service::post() block until the io_service is done? I came to this question because I saw that in ::post() there is a lock involved protecting access to the operations queue. Regards, Andreas -- Dipl.-Ing. Is thread pool using asio and thread_group working as intended?

Hello, I have found several sites illustrating the use of boost:asio::io_service together with boost::thread_group to create a simple thread pool system. I put together my own minimum example to test it: asio::io_service io_service; asio::io_service::work work(io_service); boost::thread_group threads; for (std::size_t i = 0; i < running_threads; ++i) { threads.create_thread(boost::bind(&asio::io_service::run, &io_service)); } for (int u = 0; u < work_units; u++) { io_service.post(boost::bind(WorkFunc, u)); } io_service.stop(); threads.join_all(); When running the code, I find that all worker threads are killed when the following line is executed: io_service.stop();. Does the code work as intended? My impression from the comments to the examples I have seen is that it does not work as intended on my system. If the code does work as intended, is there a simple non polling method to determine when all work units are completed? /Jonas

[boost lambda bind] overloading not compiling

Hi All, I came across this strange error. Binding of overloaded member functions works with boost bind, but not with boost lambda bind. But I cannot call foo(&C::mf, pc) to mean the same as foo(bind(&C::mf,pc)) when the binding in question is pc->mf(). That is, bind treats a member function automatically as a function whose first argument is 'this', but boost::result_of does not have the same trick. How can I express the result type of the second form of foo shown above? —John

In my earlier note, I figured it should just work. But it's not. I think it might be different on Boost 1.47? Can anyone give me a VERY QUICK answer on how to return a unique_future on a compiler without && using Boost 1.47? Patch required to build Boost.Locale 1.49 with ICU support

Hello I followed ICU 49.1 build instructions and have set compiler define U_USING_ICU_NAMESPACE to 0 in order to avoid polluting the global namespace. Doing so requires the attached patch to make Boost.Locale compile with MSVC2010 SP1. Regards, Peter.

Minimal vector initialization

I'm proposing a small boost library: struct minimal_init {}; template <typename T> struct minimal_constructible : public T { minimal_constructible() : T(minimal_init()) {} }; The purpose of this is to enable vectors of simple structs (containing only POD members) to have resize calling a do-nothing constructor. Let's say that I have a loop that I'd like to calculate in parallel: struct Dummy { Dummy(int a_=0) : a(a_) {} Dummy(const minimal_init &) {} // Without a v-table, this shouldn't need to touch any part of the created object? int a; }; void foo() { #define N 100 std::vector<minimal_constructible<Dummy> > data; data.resize(N); #pragma omp parallel for for (size_t i=0;i<N;++i) data[i].a=i; } Using reserve+push_back is unlikely to create a properly sorted vector. Ideally, we'd add a resize member to std::vector that takes a template T2 that is different from T, just like emplace_back does, but that won't happen soon. disabling automatic thread-local storage cleanup in boost::thread

I would like to use boost::thread (static library) in a DLL project that also includes some managed C++. Thus I am attempting to disable the automatic TLS cleanup, since the TLS callbacks it uses are not compatible with managed code. I have found references to two methods of doing this: 1) Define tss_cleanup_implemented() to prevent the automatic cleanup code from being linked in: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/11/130440.php 2) Build the thread library without tss_pe.cpp: http://boost.2283326.n4.nabble.com/Using-new-threads-link-issues-td2637128.… My questions are: 1) Are these two methods functionally equivalent? 2) How exactly does defining tss_cleanup_implemented prevent the cleanup code from being linked in? Is the idea that if a definition exists locally the linker won't go looking for one in the library and thus won't link the cleanup code either? When I define extern "C" void tss_cleanup_implemented(void){} within my project in the global namespace, I get linker errors about multiply defined symbols (LNK2005, LNK1169) -- are there other linker settings I need to change in order for it to work? I'm using Visual Studio 2008. Finally, I just want to confirm that once I've disabled the automatic cleanup, I only need to call on_thread_exit() from threads launched through the native API that use boost::thread functionality like thread_specific_ptr. If the application only launches threads through boost, I just need to call on_process_enter/exit in main. Correct? Thanks, Sarah

[BLL] Problem with print vector elements.

boost arm compilation

Hi all, i have some problem compiling boost on arm. i can compile package individually but when i use "install" i go segmentation fault after a some times. [Variant] recursive_wrapper and ambiguous convert_construct()

Hello, I'm modelizing a syntax tree using boost::variant, std::tuple and std::vector. This syntax tree has a lot of cyclic dependencies, so I have to use boost::recursive_wrapper along with forward declarations. I've encountered a case that my compiler (GCC 4.7) refuses to build. This is a constraint I can't get rid of in my whole project.) The compiler complains about an ambiguous call of convert_construct() in Boost's source code, where a comment says: NOTE TO USER : Compile error here indicates that the given type is not unambiguously convertible to one of the variant's types (or that no conversion exists). c can be converted to boost::recursive_wrapper<c_fwd> though. Where is the ambiguity? I really don't know what to do. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Boost.Locale: normalized concatenation?

I'm a happy user of boost.locale, but there is a use case that I can't see a solution for. I would like to concatenate two long, canonically normalized (NFC) UTF-8 strings. It seems that the only way to currently do this is by calling boost::locale::normalize on the resulting string. This is wasteful, as it requires walking the entire string when only a well-defined substring of each (at the boundary) can possibly require modification. The ideal solution would be for boost.locale to expose something like ICU's unorm2_normalizeSecondAndAppend, which takes advantage of normalization guarantees in the Unicode standard to only normalize the boundary where it is required. Does this capability already exist in boost.locale? Thanks.

Best practice for singletons?

There are many ways to skin the singleton cat. In fact, boost itself sports several--some publicly exposed, some in "detail". I'm wondering if any one or two of these might be considered to be the current state-of-the-art with regard to implementing a singleton. I can certainly "roll my own" as I've done in the past, but if I can stand on the shoulders of giants and since I already have an accepted dependency on boost, I definitely prefer that. I do not wish to engage in any religious wars regarding singletons--I'm aware that they have their evils. Thanks much! -- Chris Cleeland

memory leak with boost asio and openssl

I've written an HTTP daemon (like Apache) with Boost that takes https connections with openssl. Everything is working fine, except that it's leaking memory. Valgrind shows the leak is always in the openssl functions, and the backtrace shows it always starts inside boosts architecture. The backtraces are something like (this is heavily cleaned up since they're huge): CRYPTO_malloc openssl_stream_service::ssl_wrap openssl_operation::async_read_handler boost_asio_handler_invoke_helpers::invoke strand_service::dispatch asio_handler_invoke task_io_service::do_one io_service::run thread_proxy start_thread clone In my code I have a single 'server' class, I have a single instance of boost::asio::ssl::context(_io_service,boost::asio::ssl::context::sslv23) which I setup one time in my server's constructor (setting use_certificate_chain_file, etc). I also have an boost::asio::io_service and a boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor. An instance of my Connection class is created for each inbound connection, and it has a boost ssl_socket, which gets the io_service and context (by reference). Naturally lots and lots of other code too, and it's all working. My Connection objects are properly deleted when the connection is done, and so is the boost ssl_socket. And I call ssl_socket::shutdown(ip::tcp::socket::shutdown_both, ec) before deleting the socket. But it seems that's not enough to free all the memory. Valgrind shows there are no stray copies of any of my objects or of any boost objects that I created. Just all these openssl calls that originate within the boost framework. What's very strange is that the number of allocations leaked doesn't correspond to the number of connections. If my app starts and exits with no connections, there are only some leaks in static constructors, which, from what I read, is a known bug in openssl. But after there is 1 connection, there are about 6 new leaks similar to that stack trace above. After there are 10 connections, there are 16 leaks. But after 40 connections, there are only 18 leaks. So the leaks grows gradually, but over time it does keep growing until my app runs out of memory. Anybody know what cleanup functions I might not be calling to free up the memory? Thanks.

This is something I do all the time with normal shared pointers. [boost::python] problems wrapping a base class

HI, I'm working on exposing what should be a factory to create derived objects using the standard pattern for such a factory. boost serialization skip a node

Hello, I am working on a config file format, which is a collection of several xml "config file" classes. I would like to save them in a single file like this: oarchive << NVP(filters); oarchive << NVP(processor); oarchive << NVP(segmentation); However, it does make sense te use the "processor" class without the filters or the segmentation. Hi All, This post is regarding the issue we saw on IBM compiler using BOOST 1.48 version. Here is the sample code where we are trying to just include the header file "boost/spirit/include/qi.hpp>". *********************************Example Code************************************* #include <iostream> #include <boost/spirit/include/qi.hpp> main() { using namespace std; std::cout<<"test"<<"\n"; } *********************************END************************************************** When we compile this code on IBM with the compiler* : IBM XL C/C++ for AIX, V11.1 (5724-X13) Version: 11.01.0000.0000 *we end up with below error: xlC -I /usr/include/boost/1_48_0 -o dump test_prog.cpp - *xlC: 1501-230 (S) Internal compiler error; please contact your Service Representative. For more information visit:* - *http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21110810* But this code works absolutely fine on g++ Linux. [Boost.Thread] unique_future without && ?

My code needs to be compatible with a platform that doesn't have rvalue references available, for the time being. I've avoided explicit uses of move and made my && arguments fall back to const&. But I'm not sure about returning a unique_future. I see that unique_future<T> has a special move-the-guts type, with an implicit conversion operator and a constructor. But do I need to do anything special to declare a function returning one, and likewise the return statement itself? The code in packaged_task ( unique_future<R> packaged_task<R>::get_future() ) is not conditionally compiled based on BOOST_NO_RVALUE_REFERENCES, so I'm supposing that it just works by itself. Is that correct? But maybe it only works by itself in some cases? In that code, the return statement names a constructor directly. return unique_future<R>(task); In my code, I'm returning a unique_future that I already made somewhere else (actually, the result of another function call) so it would be wanting to call the copy constructor, I would think. So if I write unique_future<int> foo(); unique_future<int> bar() { return foo(); } what _should_ happen is that the existing value uses a user-defined conversion to construct the "copy", right? So I should expect this to work correctly if the thing I'm returning is already exactly the right type, as well as when naming the constructor directly. —John

[regex] fails to work with ICU

Hi, I cannot make boost :: regex and ICU work together. I installed icu4c 4_8_1_1 in /usr/local, then boost_1_49_0 libraries, in /usr/local/boost. I used bjam with "-sHAVE_ICU=1". It built successfully with a message "-has_icu builds: yes". So it means boost libraries found icu, and can use it. But it wouldn't. [preprocessor] having trouble using reentrant macros

I'm unable to use the reentrant macros for iteration currently..I think I'm probably misunderstanding their usage, and a push in the right direction would be much appreciated. My need is to iterate through a sequence, then iterate through a sequence nested within each element. As I understand, I should be able to call (e.g.): * BOOST_PP_SEQ_FOR_EACH(OP, data, seq) to iterate through the outer sequence * then in OP(r, data, elem) call BOOST_PP_SEQ_FOR_EACH_R(r, OP2, data, elem) For me this keeps producing rubbish with a lot of non-expanded macro names embedded. [MSM] multiple visitors / signatures, and visitors by ref in submachines

Hi, I think that the visitors and the flags ideas of the MSM are very generic and easy to use. So, great! But, there is a way to define multiple visitors for a single state (base)? I think that it is not possible because the visitors mechanism is based on a "simple/single typedef" and not on an "listed typedef"... isn't it? So, why the visitors are not like flags? I mean, why not to use an "accept_sig_list" instead of a single "accept_sig"? Why is not possible a code like the following: struct my_visitable_state { typedef mpl::vector< args<void, VisitorType1&>, args<void, VisitorType2&> > accept_sig_list; void accept(VisitorType1&) const {} void accept(VisitorType2&) const {} }; By the way... I think that the usage of boost::ref() is not propagated to the submachines...? [MSM] state transitions and exceptions

Everyone, I did just get around to give the MSM a first shot and I have say I am impressed at the neat design, the ease of use, "understandability", tutorial ... exceptional work. Really great and it helped me a great deal so far. So thanks a bunch for this teriffic addition to boost. That's the kind of stuff I love boost for. There is one question however that puzzles me. How can / do I prevent state transistions when a transition function throws? Most transition functions are defined like that: void so_transition(event::Cause const &e) { methodCausingAnException(); } The tutorial only mentions this at the very end of the back-end docs and this is not clear to me. I have stuff inside my transitions that may throw and the example text mentiones other valid examples (like connect() logic). So what am I supposed to do here? This? void so_transition(event::Cause const &e) { try { methodCausingAnException(); } catch (const std::exception &sex) { return ??? } } The type is void and I can't return anything that would prevent the transition. Or should I just let the exception pass? What is the correct way? Suggestions are appreciated, Stephan

The code works fine on Linux, but I got bug reports from Windows users. For them the assertion in the loop triggers (and an attempt to insert something into alive later segfaults). So I have two questions: What could be the cause of this problem? Has it been encountered before? Is the approach of using cfg[i] to get the vertex still correct? I've used this for some time, but I can't find it in current boost documentation. Philipp

Asio SSL & short read error

Hi all, I've run into a strange problem with reading data using an SSL socket stream (client-side). The code we've got essentially does the following on each read: system::error_code ec; auto result = _source->read_some(buffer(buf, n), ec); // buf and n are defined as char* and size_t. // here is where the occasional strangeness occurs. I understand that during any streaming operation may return fewer bytes than requested - this is something we handle gracefully. However occasionally after read_some() above, we may get 0 bytes read and ec set to an internal ssl error code indicating a "short read". My understanding is that this particular error is benign and the software should just continue to try reading. In fact, when I change our code to deal with this error specifically and just continue reading, everything works nicely. The part I don't feel comfortable with is that it doesn't seem clear at all how to differentiate this particular error from a potentially fatal error other than comparing the error code's lower 8 bits against SSL_R_SHORT_READ (which I found by browsing the asio code and it is an OpenSSL constant). There doesn't seem to be any publicly facing constant that helps determine this situation. Here is the basic logic for how we handle this specifically (which I do not like at all because it puts SSL-specific error handling logic where it doesn't belong): // Loosely C++ code: if (result == 0) { if (EOF) { // Okay, end of the stream } else if (ec) { if ((ec.value() & 0xff) == SSL_R_SHORT_READ) { // Not a big deal - just retry the operation. } else { // Throw! } } } One other thing of interest is that the client-side code is using asio in a rather synchronous manner. I am not sure if this problem arises when using asio asynchronously. Is this the only way to handle this situation reliably? Did I miss something obvious? Question regarding library testing system

a) http://www.boost.org/development/running_regression_tests.html tells me how to run the test suite on ALL the libraries locally. How do I run the test suite on ONE particular library locally? b) I noticed that on the test page for the serialization library there are a number of boxes in dark green indicating - expected failures. I remember that there was a procedure for specifying expected failures but now I can't find it. Could someone point me to the relevant page? Robert Ramey

Hi, Apologies to anyone receiving/reading this for the second time, I originally sent this to the wrong list. I'm hoping to port an application to open vms using HP C++7.3. I don't suppose anyone has any dcl scripts to build boost. I 'only' need asio and threading. Currently I'm just trying to compile the asio chat examples. I'm completely new to VMS and the compiler, I managed to get a few things to compile but now get a "could not open source file "sys/select.h"', a bit of googling suggests I may need to have an HP porting library installed or maybe I'm just missing an prepocessor directive to include the correct code, can't see anything obvious in socket_types.hpp to set? Any pointers in the right general direction would be gratefully appreciated. File-system persistence for boost shared memory files

Hello, The boost documentation suggests that shared memory interprocess mechanism can have file-system or kernel persistence. When I create shared memory files on an Ubuntu Linux host, they are created at /var/run/shm. But on a system reboot, the shared memory files go away, which means they are using kernel persistence. How can I ensure that shared memory files persist across reboots? Hi, Can I get the position from the iterator that I get from split_iterator? The position I am seeking to determine is the "zero-based number of token separated by the separator". That is, in "one;two;three;four;five;six;seven;eight", the position of three is 2 and eight is 7. Can anyone help me on this? udp with virtual network cards

Dear All, I implemented an UDP Multicast socket connection with boost. It works fine if I test server and client on the same PC (windows Xp or 7) but If server and client are (normally) on different PCs and at least on the client side there are virtual network cards active, the client does not receve udp data. It seems the udp connection uses one of the virtual cards and in that case it doesn't work. In fact If I deactivate all virtual cards then it starts working. Why Boost uBLAS

Good day, i started using boost one month ago. Now i saw that boost is offering uBLAS to use/manipulate matrices. So my question is: Why is the wheel invented totally new? The uBLAS-Team even writes that they focus an "correct algorithm" and that "performance will be improved later". Why cant boost simply adpot http://arma.sourceforge.net/ or Newmat 11: http://www.robertnz.net/nm11.htm#refer I used Newmat in many complex commercial projects where performance was very important. Newmat is easy to use and I dont now any bugs. Maybe the interface is not totally stl compatible, but this library is very easy and intuitive to use. Is atomicity guaranteed on data residing in shared memory? E.g. Processes allocate shared memory as follows using either create_only and truncate or open_only: #define SHARED_MEM_SIZE sizeof(boost::uint32_t) #define SHARED_MEM_NAME "SHMTest" boost::shared_ptr<shared_memory_object> shm_obj; boost::shared_ptr<mapped_region> mapping; std::string sharedMemoryName(SHARED_MEM_NAME); shm_obj.reset(new shared_memory_object(create_only, sharedMemoryName.c_str(), read_write)); shm_obj->truncate(SHARED_MEM_SIZE); mapping.reset(new mapped_region(*shm_obj, read_write, 0, SHARED_MEM_SIZE)); Then, they use the boost atomic functions to read and write to the memory: volatile boost::uint32_t* temp = static_cast<volatile boost::uint32_t*>(mapping->get_address()); unsigned int value = boost::interprocess::detail::atomic_read32(temp); boost::interprocess::detail::atomic_write32(temp, value); Are these memory accesses guaranteed to be atomic? [fusion] iterating over a sequence with non-const references

Hi, I would like to iterate over a sequence and preserve the reference/const/non-const of the elements. That is say I have a sequence like this: tuple<int&, int> seq; I would like to this to be true: typeof(deref(begin(seq))) == int& typeof(deref(next(begin(seq)))) == int&& It seems fusion sequences always return a const reference to the element. Is there a workaround to get it to work like this? Or is this just not possible with Boost.Fusion? Furthermore, I would like to use the transformation algorithms (especially push_back, and push_front) and still preserve the reference type. Is that possible, through some workarounds? Finally, would it still be fairly efficient when dealing with references, to copy the tuple and make a new tuple when doing algorithms such as push_back or push_front? regex_replace and Unicode ( Cyrillic ) problem

Hi, I have a string with 2 Cyrillic words новый дом repeated 3 times. I try to regex_replace each occurrance of these words. For this I use std:: string format("$1 красный $2") and regex pattern ("(\\W+)\\s+(\\W+)"), The result is only the last occurrence is replaced,the 2 preceding ones are not. Where is my mistake? Hi, I am implementing custom smart pointer with move semantics and I am having problems with implementing move constructor with template param. In fact clone_ptr presented in docs suffers from that issue also. I have a hard time understanding how one deals with the same unit in different scale. Say I want to use thou, inch, feet, all interchangeably. My problem is I`m not sure which strategy to use. Can I use std::queue as ASIO io object for asynchronise operation?

Hi, I want to implement a message queue between multiple thread, with multiple thread post message to the queue and one single thread process the message. I don't want the single processing thread to be blocked by the os when there is no message to be processed. I don't know if I can use ASIO lib to help me implement it. In my thought, the single processing thread read the queue asynchronisely and be invoked if there is one message ready on the queue, just like there is data ready on the socket. Is it doable? And is its performance better than the blocking method using conditional_variable? Regards, -Bruce

shared_ptr and circular dependency

What are one's options when the code one is working on contains a circular dependency and one is trying to update it to use a shared_ptr vs a raw pointer? I don't think I can easily get rid of the preexisting circular dependency. The original author has created an inheritance where the base needs the derived. We all know this is wrong, but it would take quite a bit to analyze how it is used and be removed. Am I out of luck? Crash in boost::thread::sleep(xt) (boost 1.42 on Windows 32 bit)

Hi all, we recognize in our tests, that one of our threads seem to crash in boost:thread::sleep(xt). Is there a known issue with the sleep() function under MS Visual Studio 2008, with boost 1.42? It was tested on Windows 7 and Windows XP 32 Bit OS. Our thread crashes also in the debugger, when all exceptions are on, without any notice. But only this one thread goes away, the debugger stop at a breakpoint, which was set at a place, where it was recognized that this thread no longer runs. The error occure, in a multithreaded environment, with at least around 30 active threads. The sleep is outsite any critical section (no mutex and/or no semaphore is active). [boost.locale] Question about boundary rules

Have just been exploring boost.locale which I hadn't used before. However I'm not quite understanding some of the behaviour for boundary rules when segmenting text. Fortunately I can see this behaviour happening in the example code so its probably my misunderstanding and easily corrected. If I compile http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_49_0/libs/locale/doc/html/boundary_8cpp-exa… and run it I get :- [...skipped to avoid long quote ] Part [Linux2.6] has number(s) Part [ ] has no word characters Part [and] has letter(s) Part [ ] has no word characters Part [Windows7] has number(s) letter(s) Part [ ] has no word characters [...] However I don't understand why "Linux2.6" is detected as having number(s) but no letters whilst "Windows7" is detected as having both. It doesn't appear to be the decimal point "Linux26" has the same behaviour (whilst "Linux2" is detected as having both). I haven't debugged this just glanced at the code (which seems to be setting these flags based on all the icu ruleBasedBreakIterator getRuleStatusVec()). Boost interprocess message_queue thread-safe?

Hello, I am trying to use the Boost Inter-process message queue and wanted to know the application needs to take care of synchronization. The documentation lists 'Message queues' under the 'Synchronization' section and mentions: 'A message queue is similar to a list of messages. Threads can put messages in the queue and they can also remove messages from the queue' So is the message queue thread-safe? My use case is several multi-threaded processes on a single host writing to the message queue and another multi-threaded process on the same host reading from the message queue. Hi, Consider the mersenne_twister_engine<...> member function seeding a engine with an iterator range of seed values: template<typename It> void mersenne_twister_engine<...>::seed(It &, It); Is there some nice way to figure out how many seed values this function will need? I have used mt19937 and had to inspect the code to figure out it needs 624. I would find it very useful if this information is somewhere readily provided through some organized interface, e.g. a member function or a static class member stating that value. Same for other engine types. BTW, I find it surprising that the first parameter is a reference to an iterator, and hence the input argument itself will be altered. Is that by design? If so what's the rationale? I think it's fairly odd behaviour, giving rise to unnecessary dangerousness and should become documented more clearly (big warning in bold flashing red letters etc. :) ). [ptr_container] Disable indirection interface

I have an API that expects iterators to pointers and using it with ptr_container would simplify some code. But the indirection interface of ptr_container prevents this. I'm trying the example on the "Character Set Conversions" page of the Boost.Locale documentation: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_49_0/libs/locale/doc/html/charset_handling.… (the full code I'm running is at the end of this message). When compiling with gcc: g++ -o test -lboost_locale test.cpp It run correctly - it prints "שלום" to standard output. However, when compiling with clang: clang++ -o test -lboost_locale test.cpp It produces, as far as I can tell, gibberish - it prints "×©××" to standard output. [Signals2] Signal memory overhead

Hello, I've been using the Signals2 library for a while now, and I'm very happy with it. But lately I have noticed that the library seems to have a rather large overhead in terms of memory consumption. My measurements indicate 233 bytes per signal<>, and an additional 128 bytes of overhead per connected slot. Connections themselves are lightweight at 24 bytes, as expected. I've been measuring on Linux 64bit, by creating a class with one signal and a number of active connections to that signal. This class is instantiated on the heap and the pointer is discarded. When run under Valgrind, I get the numbers mentioned above. All measurements have been done with threading support disabled (using boost::signals2::dummy_mutex). Since I don't need most of the features (my signals have one active connection most of time, seldomly more), I hacked together a small replacement that fits my needs as well. That code measures at 32 bytes per signal, 32 bytes per slot and 16 bytes per connection. Of course it provides nothing except connect/disconnect and operator(). Am I using the library incorrectly? Does my measurement method skew results? -- Sean

I have an mpl::vector that is built by a series of push_back ops, and want to traverse at runtime using mpl::for_each<v>( do_sth() ) A member type may also be an mpl::vector, and in this case I wish to specialise do_sth::operator() for that case. Nor does it matter whether I have the instance of it in the loop on the stack or heap (I did make all the work inReset so that the same instance could be used to do all of a series of regressions, but there is little point if I get a core dump). Since I am working with a system that may be non-autonomous, I was going to modify it to work with a boost:: circular_buffer, and then use the std::copy on that container's begin and end iterators in exactly the same way that I use it with the std:;vector above, so I can doing a moving analysis with a fixed length sample temporal period. And I can't stop here, as I need not only the regression coefficients, but the residuals. Since this core dump is happening after the last executable line of function reset, and before the last executable line in my for loop in function main (and I don't have any lines of code to eb executed between the two), I wonder if this is due to an unfortunate interaction between the boost::shared_array and the gsl code. Do the gsl matrix and vector views have to be cleaned up before the memory they're configured to use is freed? Or is there something odd with boost::shared_array (I have only used boost::shared_ptr before - so I am not entirely comfortable with my knowledge of boost::shared_array)? If so, how? Or is it the case I have abused the shared_array? If so, how do I fix it? Any insights as to what may be awry would be appreciated. Cheers Ted

[spirit, phoenix] grammars and phoenix actions

Hi all - I'm trying to transition my grammar from something like this: simple_expr = _int | '(' >> full_expr >> ')' ; sum_expr = simple_expr | (simple_expr >> '+' >> simple_expr)[_ret = _1 + _2] ; ... to something like sum_expr = simple_expr >> *(sum_expr >> '+' >> sum_expr) ; I have full grammars coded up for essentially all integer operations that could be done in C. I extended one of the simple AST examples that Joel de Guzman has written, by adding the bitwise ops and ternary operations. I'm not entirely sure why (not a grammar/parser guru), but the latter grammer is far more efficient to parse using spirit than the former. I remember writing grammars more like the first back when I used bison, but I understand the kind of parser is different (LR vs recursive descent). Anyway, on to my question. I am fine using the second type of grammar, but I've timed the parsing and evaluation of my little calculator, and AST creation and desctruction actually dwarfs parsing time. I wonder if using phoenix could speed up evaluation, and also how exactly something like the "plus" operator could be evaluated in this curried context? I've tried many searches in google, but haven't found the magic example. Thanks, Brian

It then returns to function main, and it's nect statement produces the line of '+' symbols, and this is not successfully executed. So, something bad is happening between the end of the function and the return to function main. 2) if I uncomment the inner loop, over I, and comment out ' prpca.reset(new regressionPCA(x,y));', that loop runs to completion. Thus, we can exclude bg from having any role in this core dump. It must be something in either gsl or boost::shared_array, or maybe boost::shared_ptr (but the core dump happens too soon to be in shared_ptr's reset, unless the output to std::cout is buffered and contents of the buffer are lost in the core dump before they can be printed, but this is unlikely). 3) It must be something subtle, as I get one execution of the analysis done in Reset, as shown in the first analysis reported by 'rpca', and then I get two complete passes through my loop over j before it crashes. I am baffled as to even how I determine whether it is something I have done wrong with GSL or with boost::shared_array. But here is an experiment I tried, let's see what you make of this. I changed my main loop to use: rpca.Reset(x,y); instead of prpca.reset(new regressionPCA(x,y)); That is, I used the object I'd made on the stack, instead of the one(s) made on the heap. Condition Variable Notify

Hello, I'm using a condition variable to notify when I get an ack message back. For the most part it is working like it is suppose to, but I have a situation where it doesn't work. Luckly the problem is repeatable and seems to be specific to my condition variable being notified, I've included a simplified version of the code, are there any outstanding issues? However, at a particular part of my code waitForAck is called, then receiveAck is called in the other thread, notify is sent out but for some reason even though i'm waiting in the timed_wait in thread 1 it waits for 8 seconds and then says there was a timeout. So my questions are: 1. Does anything look off, am I using the condition variable and mutex correctly? 2. In waitForAck, I have a scope_lock that is locked, when I enter into timed_wait, does this unlock the mutex and the re-locks it when m_ackCond.notify_one() is called? 3. Are there any special circumstances with condition variable (besides receive happens before wait) where this code shouldn't behave as it should? This diagnostic occurred in the compiler generated function (the normal copy constructor) That kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? I have to declare a dummy copy constructor to get the class to compile.

I used Statechart quite a bit 3-5 years ago to great advantage. Having not used it since the adoption of C++11 and seeing only a few recent related mail items, I wonder if it can still be used "as-is" or is it going to require 'adjustments' (e.g., from boost::threads to C++11 threads, etc.)? Any opinions, observations, search terms or guidelines would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, since the projects tend to be anything but simple so I'm going to start using it as if I needn't care. spherical bessel functions

I am using boost spherical bessel functions and get an overflow error for the following call. double ytest; double x = 12.6; int n = 8; ytest = boost::math::sph_neumann(n, x); the value of x in not relevant as long as you're away from 0. it's the index that causes the problems, for n = 8, the call to cyl_neumann(n,x) causes the overflow. I tested this with other index values less than 8 and they all work fine. I have not tried greater than 8. MATLAB is well defined for these values and I can see no reason why this case would be special. Any ideas? Thanks, David

[BGL] Implementing own graph types: Overloading in namespace boost or ADL?

The documentation does not explicitly mention which of both approaches is recommended to implement the free function of the graph concepts for a custom graph. Usually the graph will be in its own namespace. Should the free functions be declared in the boost namespace or in the same namespace as the graph? [Asio] Binding tcp socket to a particular network interface

I'm trying to figure out the best cross platform solution to guarantee that a particular boost socket always binds to a particular network interface (eth0, eth4, etc). I know how to resolve the interface to an address and I see that I can specify an tcp endpoint to tcp socket on construction or with bind, but I also need to specify the port. Since I could be connecting to multiple servers in one instance, and have to deal with multiple instances of this library on the same machine, I can't rely a fixed port number. So my question(s): Is there a reliable cross platform way to get an endpoint to an address without a port? Or to do what boost tcp socket does by default, to get an unbound port for an address? Or generally guarantee that the socket is bound to a particular network interface? Short of finding a way to resolve ports, I don't see a way to do this repeatedly. For some context, we are trying to eliminate routing tables to specify the interface to particular servers. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! [Regex] Is it possible to match any "linebreak"

Is there a way to have a regex like [[:digit:]]{3}([^\n]+)\n? have \n match any line breaking character? (The processed files might have Unix or DOS line endings.) I know I could modify the regex [[:digit:]]{3}([^\n\r]+)[\n\r]* but I was hoping there might be an easier solution like a character class [[:linebreak:]], or maybe an escaped character like \R or something like that. [Interprocess] How to interrupt interprocess_condition::wait()?

I had a simple concurrent queue that was working fine shuffling data between threads. Now I want to use it between processes. I switched out the boost::condition_variable for a boost::interprocess::interprocess_condition. The queue funcitons normally, except that I can't interrupt the thread waiting on the queue. Previously I simply called boost::thread::interrupt() and the thread would die (with the interrupt exception I assume). But interprocess_condition::wait() doesn't seem to care about the interrupt. Am I missing something? Do I need to use the interprocess_condition since the queue is in shared memory? problems with boost bind and boost thread

Hi, I have problems with the attached code (test.cpp, extracted from the original class only with the relevant code). The member template constructor of CCycleThread takes an argument and passes this to boost bind. The binding is to a another member template method which is the thread function for boost thread: boost::thread(boost::bind(&CCycleThread::execute<T>,this,t) The template parameter type is deduced by the argument type passed by the user. If the type is an ordinary function the code works fine. If the argument itself is another boost bind object the compilation fails! I tested the following within the constructor: auto test = boost::bind(&CCycleThread::execute<T>,this,t) // -> ok test(); // -> compile error The call of the operator() of the bind object is the problem. Interestingly, if one binding is boost::bind and the other one is std::bind the code works. Any ideas what's the problem? How can I fix this? Using std and boost bind is more a hack than a real solution :/

Clarification on McGregor common subgraph library

Hi The documentation for the mcgregor common subgraph library, at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_48_0/libs/graph/doc/mcgregor_common_subgrap…, says that " "mcgregor_common_subgraphs_maximum_unique(...); Explores the *entire* search space and invokes the user_callback afterward with each of the largest, unique discovered subgraphs. Returning false from the user_callback will *not* terminate the search because it is invoked after the search has been completed. " Given graph 1 A |__ B_| (Self loop on B) | C / \ D E \ / F | G / \ \ H \ / I And graph 2 A |__ B_| (Self loop on B) | C | D | E / \ \ F \ / G The application of mcgregor_common_subgraphs_maximum_unique gives me the following mapping: G1 <-> E2 H1 <-> F2 I1 <-> G2 But in addition, I was also expecting the mappings A1<-A2, B1<->B2 and C1<-E2, D1<-F2, since these are separate, maximum subgraphs I see these (along with other smaller subgraphs) when I use simply "mcgregor_common_subgraphs" or "mcgregor_common_subgraphs_unique". Why do I not see them with the "maximum" version? Thanks Suhas
