Hi all, I think I've got a problem with the way I use the weight property map in my betweenness_centrality (and maybe other locations too). I've got a graph like that: typedef boost::property<boost::edge_weight_t, double> EdgeWeightProperty; typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS, boost::vecS, boost::undirectedS, VertexProperties, EdgeWeightProperty> unGraph; And I add edges with weights like that (simplified): EdgeWeightProperty weight = getWeight(a, b); // 0f ... 2.0f std::pair<unGraph::edge_descriptor, bool> e = boost::add_edge(a, b, weight, m_ugraph); Than I try to do the brandes_centrality_betweenness: std::vector< double > v_centrality_vec(boost::num_vertices(m_ugraph), 0.0); boost::brandes_betweenness_centrality(m_ugraph , boost::centrality_map(boost::make_iterator_property_map(v_centrality_vec.begin(),boost::get(boost::vertex_index, m_ugraph),double())).vertex_index_map(get(boost::vertex_index, m_ugraph)).weight_map(get(boost::edge_weight, m_ugraph)) ); But I get crazy results... 1) I have checked by hand that my "getWeight" (my weights) are OK. 2) I have set _ALL_ weights to 1.0 (almost as if brandes was using BFS internally), Again I get the _SAME_ crazy results! [boost 1.53.0] Hello, I'd like to find in a stream of text either "abcd" or "ab". The text is not bounded in size, so I think I should use partial_match. Android: segfault while writing to archive during Serialization

Greetings! New to discussion, apologies in advance for any inadvertent misuse of terminology / standards. (also, I tried e-mailing this post directly last night, but it doesn't appear to have shown up, yet. double-apologies if double-post). I'm trying to port my project, which involves some serialization code, to Android. I followed instructions to build boost 1.49 found here: https://github.com/MysticTreeGames/Boost-for-Android and can successfully compile my application using crystax NDK r7 (gcc 4.5.3) , and link it to the Serialization library. Unfortunately! When my application calls the serialization code to send my object to the archive, it crashes. I've reduced my actual code to try and isolate the crash in a way I can post here. std::ofstream outStream(MAP_SAVE_FILE, std::ios_base::binary); boost::archive::text_oarchive outputArchive(outStream, 1); Classroom *c = new Classroom(); CCLog("Outputting archive"); // outputArchive << mapInstance; outputArchive << c; The crash occurs at outputArchive << c; "Fatal signal 11 (SIGEGV) at 0xdeadbaad (code=1), thread 1870 (Thread-97)" which is a segfault, in Androidvania. Ideally I want to be outputting that mapInstance variable that's commented out to archive, but for sanity's sake I made a silly little Classroom class, which I'll include for sanity's sake: class Classroom { friend class boost::serialization::access; template <class Archive> void serialize( Archive &ar, const unsigned int version ) { ar & studentCount; } int studentCount; public: Classroom() { studentCount = 1; } ~Classroom(){} }; I've run across several red flags about wchar support in Android or on gcc versions, so I'm inclined to think that's related. Then again, it appears as though my boost configuration files were aware of the compiler version when it built (that Mystic Tree link at the top really does seem to be on top of things, if anyone's interested), which is how the program was able to compile and run, at all. I'm almost 100% certain this is related to the Android NDK, either the gcc version or the gnu-stl, because I can compile and run this code on Windows through Visual studio with no problem, but it crashes on Android. I've made sure that my app has write permissions to the internal storage being used. I can even write out text files using basic std::ostreams without a crash. I am not at all familiar with dealing with these sorts of compiler- or platform-specific issues; I have a bachelor's in SE which taught me design patterns, architecture, and project management, but nothing like this. I'd greatly appreciate some direction in learning how to work through these kinds of problems, (although I'd even more greatly appreciate an actual solution to the problem I'm seeing). Trying to cross compile Boost.Python using mingw

Hello all, I'm trying to cross compile boost python under linux to windows using the mingw32 compiler. Static linking works great, but when trying to make a dll, I get the following errors: gcc.link.dll bin.v2/libs/python/build/gcc-mingw-mingw32/release/target-os-windows/threadapi-win32/threading-multi/libboost_python-mt.dll.a /usr/bin/i686-w64-mingw32-ld: cannot find -lutil /usr/bin/i686-w64-mingw32-ld: cannot find -lpthread /usr/bin/i686-w64-mingw32-ld: cannot find -ldl collect2: ld returned 1 exit status My compile line is: b2 --with-system --with-date_time --with-python --with-filesystem --with-program_options -j 4 toolset=gcc-mingw32 target-os=windows threadapi=win32 variant=release --layout=tagged -sNO_BZIP2=1 -sNO_ZLIB=1 link=shared All the other libraries (system, date_time, program_options) generate dlls sucessfully. [boost] [arm] Building for ARM

Hello, I wonder, has anyone built Boost for ARM? Specifically, we've got an ARM5 for which I want to use Boost for many of those features, a key one is Spirit2 for at least one domain-specific-language (DSL) exposure, possibly two or three. That I can say, we're working with Mentor Graphics, Code Sourcery Code Bench for ARM for the moment. I think they've got current GCC language support through 4.7.2 if it matters. My only questions are, how feasible a cross compile is Boost? Does the inclusion and linkage go about as smoothly as for any other ARM-destined output? Thanks much in advance. Here's some code that has been compiling till at least 1.50, and starting long before. I isolated the part that breaks to create a program. Hi all, ever since Jang Tongary suggested to use boost::fusion to define pixel types I wondered what he meant by that. I never had the opportunity to get myself familiar with fusion so I started learning it and I'm really amazed how easy the library is to use. I think I'm at a point where I would like to reach to the community for some advice. Let's say I wanna create a homogeneous three channel pixel type, like RGB. For that I would use a fusion map since I want to access channel by name. I also would like to be able to swap channels around to create BGR. [serialization, archive] Serialize boost::shared_ptr to custom archive

Hi, I'm trying to serialize a boost::shared_ptr to a custom archive. The compiler complains about the archive missing methods 'append' and 'reset'. Does anyone know where I should look to find out more information about these two methods? I wasn't able to find any documentation when looking at the Archive Concept about these two methods, and text_iarchive, together with its base classes, don't seem to declare it. On the other hand, boost::archive::text_iarchive compiles fine. Here are the compile errors I see: /usr/include/boost/serialization/shared_ptr.hpp:133:9: error: ‘class my_iarchive’ has no member named ‘append’ /usr/include/boost/serialization/shared_ptr.hpp:139:5: error: ‘class my_iarchive’ has no member named ‘reset’ My boost version is 1.46 (which comes with openSuse 12.1) Thank you in advance.

Hello, I had a problem after removing some edges from my graph. I am using the graph_parallel library. And this problem did not happened me when using the serial one. I use a predicate to remove edges, and it seems to work, it deletes the local edges and the crossing edges (source local -> target ghost). But if after that I want to iterate over the in_edges The iterator returns references to edges that does not exists any more. For example, if I had 30 in_edges and the removing process eliminate 20, then the in_edge iterator iterates over 10, but with wrong references. Could anyone help debugging this problem? Problems linking on Mac OSX 10.8

Hi, I have a project within XCode 4.6 on Mac OSX 10.8 that won't link against the static serialisation library (the project also uses some other Boost binaries, which link fine). My Boost build options are: macosx-version=10.3 maxosx-vesion-min=10.6 architecture=combined threading=multi link=static address-model=32_64 The project uses the XCode GCC compiler option, as it also uses the wxWidgets libraries, which won't work with the default compiler. Hello, I want to create an iterator_property_map to iterate over the edges, but I cannot declare the following: typedef property_map<Graph, edge_index_t>::const_type EdgeIndexMap; The compilation gives me an error. I am using an adjacency list with vertex and edge properties. I can use a vertex_index_t, so I assumed that I could use the equivalent for edges. But I don't understand why I can't. If no, are there any plans to implement robust mutex support in Interprocess, in future releases? [Smart pointers] BOOST_SP_HAS_SYNC undefined on ARM

Hi, I've been looking at some traces of our Android app (which is mostly native and extensively uses boost) and was surprised to find it uses spinlocks around the reference count of boost::shared_ptr. So I've checked the boost sources and found boost/smart_ptr/detail/atomic_count.hpp choosing the implementation depending on platform and other #defines, of which BOOST_SP_HAS_SYNC sounded like it should be turned on (Google recommends using gcc __sync_* intrinsics on Android). But, boost/smart_ptr/detail/sp_has_sync.hpp requires either __GCC_HAVE_SYNC_COMPARE_AND_SWAP_4 (which the Google cross-compiler apparently doesn't have), or (for recent gcc) #define BOOST_SP_HAS_SYNC #if defined( __arm__ ) || defined( __armel__ ) #undef BOOST_SP_HAS_SYNC #endif Why not use the intrinsics on ARM? Are they broken? For all ARM variants, or just some (ideally some old ones - I cound ignore them then)? Or are the intrinsics' semantics incompatible with the way boost atomic count needs? Building Boost for iOS projects

I'm trying to use some of the compiled boost libraries for an iOS project. Ideally, it would be nice to get a framework, but getting anything which works would be great. Is there some way to just use the .a files I'm getting from the second approach and bundle them up? Or do I just add the .a files generated by the second approach to my project and be done with it? I've got a fusion set say: set<int, optional<double>, bool> s(...) I'd like to filter out empty optional<double> values when streaming out: std::cout << s; so for s(1, 2.0, true) ==> (1,2.0,true) and for s(3, optional<double>(), false) ==> (2,false) filter_if's predicate is an a Metafunction returning mpl::bool_ so it looks to me like this won't support run time? Is there another facility that would achieve the above? Thanks, Jeff

Compiled Boost with MPI

Hi, For my project I saw today that I needed MPI too. So I installed MPICH2 and Changed my < user-config.jam > file like that : import toolset : using ; using python : 2.7 : "C:/Python273" : "C:/Python273/include" : "C:/Python273/libs" ; using mpi : : <find-static-library>mpi <library-path>"C:/librairies/MPICH2-3.0.2/lib" <include>"C:/librairies/MPICH2-3.0.2/include" : "\"C:\\librairies\\MPICH2-3.0.2\\bin\\mpiexec\"" ; So I compile Boost with this command line : b2 toolset=gcc --j4 --layout=system release --prefix=C:\librairies\boost-1.53.0 --user-config=user-config.jam install And the error is in the out.txt file in attachment. In the "Quick Start" section of the Boost.Geometry documentation, there is the following note under the "Non-Cartesian" header: Boost.Geometry supports a geographical coordinate system, but that is in an extension and not released in the current Boost release. boost::geometry::cs::geographic does seem to be in the v1.53 release. Is this just a remnant from legacy documentation, or are there some gotchas to be expected with the geographic coordinate system support? Using SSL

Hello. this will be the first time i'll be writing an SSL and am using boost::asio::ssl. I've gone through the articles over the net and somewhat understand how ssl works. I've created 3 files at server end as of now: privateKey.pem, unsignedCertificate.csr and signedCertificate.pem. I used the server's privateKey.pem to sign the certificate (hence the generated 3rd file). Hence Server itself is a Certification Authority in this case (CA). Now what i understand from theory is: <1> During handshake client will request server's certificate. <2> on reception the client must verify if the ceritficate is signed by the mentioned trusted Certification Authority (CA) in the certificate. Since CA will have used a private key to sign the certificate client will need CA's public key stored somewhere on its machine. Use that public key file to verify that mentioned CA did indeed sign it. <3> if it is, then verify the certificate as a whole. In my case, the server had used it's own private key to self-sign the certificate. questions: <1> if CA was one of the trusted third parties the O.S would have stored it's public key in default locations. In that case i guess all i needed was ssl::context::set_default_verify_paths() and boost would have used all files there to match against the CA and use its public key. In this case however i need Server's public key file. Am i right? How do i get that (server's public key)? Do i use one of the 3 files above at the client end too? Is it load_verify_file("..") that i need to call pointing to server's public key? <2> context::set_verify_callback : does this get called during handshake? The handler must return bool. Suppose i return false, who will check it and what will it do? What i am guessing is: handshake -> blocks and runs a pre-verification test -> calls the supplied handler -> if handler returns true, handshake is successful otherwise either the handshake throws or fills the error code with non-zero value depending on what flavour of handshake(...) was called. Is this correct? <3> if i use ssl::rfc2818_verification("hostname") as verify_callback handler, what do i pass in place of hostname if there is no hostname (ie., i only know the server ip address). <4> do i have to use chain of files in this case? I am using the unique_rmat_iterator, but it generates some self-loops. I could remove them, but for the graph remains inconsistent because of a bug. building with iostreams and a non-standard zlib location

Hi, I'm trying to do a bjam build of boost packages including iostreams. I have zlib installed under /unusual/location ./bjam include=/unusual/location/include install fails because it cannot find -lz. Obviously, I need to specify that libz is in /unusual/location/lib, but I don't see how to do that. I realize this seems obvious. Which part of the documentation am I missing? Thanks, Jim Amundson

If you see this thread on stack overflow: <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9669071/warning-c4503-when-using-pragma-…> You'll see a comment down at the bottom where someone has increased the warning level for their project and they are getting tons of these C4503 warnings when using boost includes. I have verified on my project that if I don't change the warning level and don't specifically disable this warning project-wide, then including using boost in my project does not generate the warning. However, if I increase the warning level beyond the default, to 3 in my case whereas the poster on stack overflow had used 4, then I get the warning. I, like the commenter on stack overflow, would like to know if there's a boost-friendly way to tell boost to disable the warning for boost headers where the boost authors have decided it's innocuous, while still retaining the high warning setting for my own code. Any suggestions? Scale-free networks generation

Hello, I would to use Boost librairies to generate scale-free networks and I am not sure what is the best approach. I am currently using the PLOD generator, but the graphs generated are generally multigraphs, that is, graphs with multiple edges between two nodes. Although I would like to generate graphs with bidirectionnal edges between nodes, I also would like to bound the maximum number of possible edges between a pair of nodes to 2. In other words, if edges (i,j) and (j,i) are generated between nodes i and j, I do not want any additional edge between those nodes to be generated. Hence, I would like to know; 1-Is it possible to generate such graphs using the PLOD generator? If it is, do I need to remove "multi-edges" after the graph is generated or is there a smarter way to do so? 2-If using the PLOD generator is not the best option, is there any other random graph generator in Boost that can be adapted to design scale-free networks? In particular, is there a graph generator implementing the Barabasi-Albert model (I have looked up the forum for an answer to that question and it seems that the answer is "no", but things may have changed since)/ 3-I read somewhere that Compressed Sparse Row (CSR) graphs could be used to represent scale-free networks, is there a way to use the corresponding Boost class to do so? [type traits / MPL] check whether a class has a certain member function

Hi, I'm looking for a boost functionality to determine whether a given type has a member function of a given name (or name + signature). this seems to be possible using SFINAE, but all I can find is BOOST_MPL_HAS_XXX_TRAIT_DEF which only works for nested types, not functions. I could of course implement it myself using SFINAE but BOOST_MPL_HAS_XXX_TRAIT_DEF has a lot of compiler bug workarounds it seems, so I guess this will cause problems. Is there such a functionality in boost? I want to use it to determine the defaults of a traits class, similar to C++11 pointer_traits::difference_type. But the determining factor for the default is a function in my case, not a type. Thanks

I'm using the Boost Unit Test Framework and have a struct with bitfields declared in it. When I compile a unit test with code like this StructWithBitfields mystruct; StructWithBitfields otherstruct; BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL(mystruct.bitfield, otherstruct.bitfield); I get a compiler errors error: non-const reference cannot bind to bit-field 'bitfield' referring to both arguments to the macro. Is there a preferred way for comparing bitfield values via unit test macros? -- Chris Cleeland

What (and why) do I wrong or should use an explicit cast in the last case?

icu libraries renamed in icu-50-*

Hello, I just have compiled a personnal build of mingw-w64 (gcc 4.8) and different extern libraries, as icu-50.1.2 (the last release of that library) on windows vista When trying to compile boost (1-53-0), it appears that icu is not found, due to following name changes in icu: * icudata library is now named icudt * icui18n library is now named icuin (i dont know if those change are recent or not :S) We can, of course, provide a copy of those libraries with the correct / needed names, but shouldn't it better to make a conditionnal choice on the icu version to know if we have to use one or other name, to ensure that icu would be correctly detected ? I expect that such test should simply take place in a jamfile or in another, am i wrong?

Before I describe my vision of the problem I point the following: 1) I'm aware that shared access to the same socket from multiple threads is unsafe. 2) All operations which my code issues on the same socket are made under mutex. Flyweights: compute a hash from them

Hi all, My parser is building string_t = flyweight<std::string> for identifiers, and it works very well. Now, I would like to make an unordered_map <string_t, foo_t>, but I have to define a hash function for string_t. I can do it but since the whole point of flyweight is to make unique instances, it would be a pity to hash the value. So I hash the address of the result of get(). Is this ok? So far everything is fine, but I might have missed something. In particular, I don't understand why their is no standard hash function defined for flyweights. Thanks in advance!

After reading another post for build errors, I got the hint from it to install python-dev and everything now builds without errors. [assign] Support for std::array

For compilers that support it (especially VS2010 or later), is or will there be support for std::array with boost::assign? For example list_of works with boost::array, but not std::array. I'm currently still on boost 1.50. If this has already been added to a post 1.50 build, then awesome. Hopefully, I'll be upgrading soon. Thanks, -- Bill

Hi, When I try to compile boost with this command line : .\b2 toolset=gcc -j4 --build-type=complete --without-mpi --prefix=C:\librairies\boost-1.53.0 --user-config=user-config.jam install I have the error that you can see in the out.txt file in attachment and the user-config.jam file in attachment either. bjam does not find *.lib file

Dear all, I have troubles to compile because bjam does not find a *.lib file which I would expect to be there. I am on Windows 7 with Boost 1.50.0 and visual studio 10. boost::statechart - two async machines in one process?

I've been using asynchronous boost::statechart for 5+ years but that doesn't seem to count for much in this instance. I've wrapped myself around the axel and have no idea how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am attempting to create a program that contains two separate classes, each built on a boost::statechart state machine. The classes are similar but there is one-and-only-one class a and it creates instances of class b. At least, that was the plan. (Apologies if this diagram doesn't format correctly. I see in the released buffer() algorithm, there is a chord length argument: void buffer(Input const & geometry_in, Output & geometry_out, Distance const & distance, Distance const & chord_length = -1) But I can't seem to find an equivalent for buffer_inserter<> with a join_round strategy. Hello, A week ago I started a thread here called "Can boost help me organize/parse lots of binary data?" As people started offering help, it because clear I had no idea what I was trying to ask. I come back with a clear question. The attached file defines: 1. TCPosition: an object that describes a position 2. TCDoubleTraits: an object that describes characteristics of a parameter represented as a double 3. TCUnsignedTraits: an object that describes characteristics of a parameter that is represented as an unsigned 4. TCPositionTraits: a collection of TC*Traits plus some boost::function magic to extract parameters from a TCPosition. 5. TCPositionTraits::PrintValues: a function that allows the user to print all values of a TCPosition The motivation for this round-about way of printing the parameters of a "position" is that I have to deal with some objects that have lots of parameters and I would like one central place where I define the characteristics of the values and their order. In this example, that place is TCPositionTraits. In my real life example I will want to store traits such as the way the data is encoded and the way in which the data needs to be transformed into "human readable" format. Question: Can you modify the attached program so that the object TCPositionTraits holds all the traits for the TCPosition object. Not just the traits for the "double" parameters, as is currently the case. Notably missing from TCPositionTraits is a reference to TCPosition::mSteps. Difficulty: This is a difficult question to answer due to the fact that TCPositionTraits has hard-coded in it the keyword "double". I cannot figure out how to remove this. Bonus: Bonus points if your answer looks something like "yes it is possible if you start using a boost concept which you apparently are not aware of". Note: You'll need the C++11 brace-initialization capability to compile this. I used "g++ -std=c++0x test.cpp" with gcc 4.6.3. Thank you, Chris

[boost] Minimum GCC required to support build

Hello, What is the minimum GCC I will need to compile boost? All of it if I can, or majority of it? And then what might I be giving up? Specifically, I am working with GCC 4.4.3 in Ubuntu LInux 10.04 LTS. I'd like to upgrade that to 4.7 if not 4.8 for C++11 features. I've read it can be done, but that makes me nervous upgrading such a crucial part of the Linux tool chain. Also, bearing in mind that we will need to cross compile to ARM5: I believe crosstool-ng might be the thing that enables that. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you. Regards, Michael Powell

building boost with a specific msvc runtime

I'm trying to get a consistent VC++ runtime for distribution, but I cannot find anything getting boost/bjam to cooperate. I have successfully compiled libcurl and UnitTest++ with the method in this link. http://tedwvc.wordpress.com/2009/08/10/avoiding-problems-with-vc2005-sp1-se… The idea being that you include a header in each file and then it will only have that one runtime dependency. b2 has options for setting cxxflags, though they do not seem to honor my /FI compile option to use the header and force the correct runtime. I assume that they are using something else. I suppose boost doesn't use the msvc flags. How should I accomplish this?

Hello all, I was looking if Boost would support basic statistics calculated from a container of values: - Boost.Accumulators supports these statistics but only in an incremental way. This is nice, but now we want exact values since the containers are small (i.e. less than 100 elements) - Boost.Math: support only for distributions Did I overlook something or is this just not supported?

[geometry] getting overlay_invalid_input_exception thrown from union operation

I am seeing a overlay_invalid_input_exception thrown from has_self_intersections when calling the union() operation. Does indicate an internal error, or have I not conditioned my input properly? My test is, taking the TIGER 2010 counties file for Alaska, and repeatedly calling union() on the polygons. There may be some issues that I can think of: 1) Island chains are represented as one big multi-ring polygon in the source shape file. When I convert to boost polygon, I set the first ring as the outer, and all others as inners. 2) Aleutians cross the 180-meridian. I am, however, taking steps to force all latitudes into the negative range, but that logic may need to be checked.

[PBGL] Bug? problem removing self loop in graph parallel

Hello, I have a problem removing edges a graph in pbgl. There are concretely self loops. I think it could be a bug in the library, because for the monoprocessor library it works. I use remove_edge_if to delete the self-loops. The bgl code works ok, but the pbgl code does not. The problem occurs looking the in_egdes of the vertex 8. It detects that it have a in_edge from 8, but when looking for the out_edges of 8 it does not appears as expected. Maybe it is a misconfiguration, but i don't think so. I attached the monoprocessor code and the multiprocessor one if someone wants to look at them. Please, could someone help me? Adding indexes + serialization for MultiIndex

I haven't actually happened upon this problem yet but I just want to know if I know how to deal with it for the future. My question is: how does the serialization work (or not work) if we add or remove indexes from the type? [Geometry] please help; using buffer() extensions

(sorry another post; someone told me to put [library name] in [] in subject... learning something new every day :) Something of a repost, but I've learned a bit more on the path to being truly confused. It appears that boost\geometry\extensions\algorithms\buffer\buffer_inserter.hpp contains some specializations for buffering other shape types? But I'm out of my depth here... is there an example? What do I need to do in order to buffer: a point? A linestring? A vector of polygons? A heterogeneous collections of shapes? Is this generalization of buffer also going to work as a "deflate" for polygons? If someone can tell me "include these headers, use these algorithms", it will help a lot! Thanks John

I ran into a compiler idiosyncrasy, and my usual approach is to use the macros and mechanisms that Boost does in the same situation. But I can't find what I'm looking for in the Boost.Config documentation. So what does Boost do here? I found that the VS2010 compiler automatically defines a static const member that has been initialized inline in the declaration, and thus supplying a (required!) definition without the initializer at namespace or file scope will give a linker error if the class declaration is in a header that appears in more than one translation unit. At least one other compiler does in fact require the bare definition to link properly, and doesn't generate it automatically as an enhancement. So I need to make these definitions conditional based on the platform (and perhaps the exact compiler version? That's why I like to use the existing config knowledge base!) I see that Boost has BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT but that is for compilers that don't have the in-class initialization at all. So if Boost is using such constructs, how does it deal with the linker idiosyncrasy?

Hello, I'm building Boost 1.53.0 on FreeBSD using GCC. I wish to provide the ICU back-end to Boost.Locale using the static implementation only. This is the command line I used to configure and build ICU 49.1.2: runConfigureICU FreeBSD --prefix=/3rdParty/icu4c/release --bindir=/3rdParty/icu4c/release/bin64 --sbindir=/3rdParty/icu4c/release/sbin64 --libdir=/3rdParty/icu4c/release/lib64 --enable-static=yes --enable-shared=no --with-library-bits=64 CPPFLAGS=-DU_TIMEZONE=0 The DU_TIMEZONE flag is a workaround for ICU on FreeBSD for that particular version. For this discussion it may safely be ignored. The ICU build results as follows: /3rdParty/icu4c/release |_ bin64 |_ include |_ lib64 |_ sbin64 |_ share As intended, the shared (*.so) libraries are not built. Only static (*.a) libraries are present in lib64: libsicudata.a, libsicui18n.a, libsicuio.a, etc... I then attempt the following command to build Boost: b2 toolset=gcc link=static variant=release threading=multi address-model=64 --build-dir=obj --stagedir=bin/64 --without-python -sICU_PATH=/3rdParty/icu4c/release/ --layout=versioned -a -j8 With this setup the build reports as follows: *...* * * *Performing configuration checks* * * * - x86 : yes* * - has_icu builds : no* *warning: Graph library does not contain MPI-based parallel components.* *note: to enable them, add "using mpi ;" to your user-config.jam* * - iconv (libc) : no* * - iconv (separate) : no* * - icu : no* * - icu (lib64) : no* *- Boost.Locale needs either iconv or ICU library to be built.* * * *...* I do not have this problem when -sICU_PATH points to a directory containing the shared versions of the ICU libraries: libicudata.so, libicui18n.so, libicuio.so ... Unfortunately the constraints of the end product restrict me from delivering ICU as a shared library. Will Boost.Locale accept the ICU back-end as a static library implementation? Hi Christophe, I will check the thing with the cstor. FYI: my library that uses the boost.msm-based state machine mechanism shall be released as shared library. It is used to realize Remote Procedure Calls. So my library consists of one Master state machine (which consists of 5 submachines and together 21 states) and one Slave state machine (which consists of 4 submachines and 19 states). The user application linking against my library has the possibility to choose if the slave state machine or the master state machine part shall be used. Now the problem could be, that I use a boost::variant type to store the 44 different application event types. This variant type I pass to the process_event method of each state machine (master and slave) although the slave state machine doesn't support the same event types like the master and vice-versa. This produces unnecessary template invocations and memory allocation. So the solution could be, to split my single shared library into two shared libraries: one for the master and one for the slave logic and each of it has a reduced boost::variant type( just with the event types of the concrete state machine). Or I keep the solution with the single shared library and I split the single boost::variant type into two different ones: one for the master and one for the slave state machine. And each boost::variant type will just be forwarded to the appropriate process_event method of the corresponding state machine. Doing so, will also prevent unnecessary template invocations for each event type on the corresponding state machine. Maybe this will also reduce the memory consumption... What is your opinion about this two putative solutions? Try to provide one and see if that helps. I don't think you have to change it completely. Probably replacing a bunch of events by a single one containing an id as attribute, then checking it in a guard to see what event you really posted would probably be enough. Unable to build 1.53.0 Ubuntu Linux 10.04

Hello, I am running GCC 4.4.3 (default?) distributed with Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS. I would like to build the latest Boost to keep up with the language and library standards, because we'll need those on a project we're working on (obviously), but it seems that we'll need to upgrade the GCC tool chain in order to do this: plus it us necessary even helpful to have access to lambda functors, expressions, etc, access Boost Phoenix (for Spirit2), and so on. I've read how it's possible to upgrade the GCC tool chain, but it worries me for obvious reasons. Also, building is one thing, the front end tool chain. We'll be cross compiling to ArchLinux running on ARM. I've done some reading about this issue and it seems that this is more of a back end concern. In other words, as long as the thing builds, compiles and links with whatever tool chain, language standard, compiler, etc, the cross compile should go well. Specifically, I believe we're going with CodeBench, but if there are other cross compilers available, that would be helpful to know as well. Any wisdom approaching an issue like this? Hi everyone, Hi Christophe, Using Boost.MSM with eUML I tried to access the attribute of a state from within an action. However, the value is not what I expected when accessing the attribute of the state given as argument to the action. (It seems to be the default-parameter.) If I access the state directly (by name) and retrieve the value from it, it is set correctly as expected. Could it be that an action gets its arguments as copies? If so, I guess, the attributes of the copied arguments should be copied, too. This is the case for events. The attributes of an event given to the action seems to be set correctly. But the attributes of a state seem to be default-initialized. Hello, In the code below, the last function, "GetFunctionThatReturnsRefX_2", does not compile. It is attempting to use boost::bind to produce a boost::function that takes a pointer to an object and returns one of the object's member variables by reference. If it is possible, would you modify it so that it does compile? Note 1: No problem when returning a copy as in "GetFunctionThatReturnsCopyX_2" Note 2: I employ a workaround in "GetFunctionThatReturnsRefX_1" that uses a helper "facade" function. I'm hoping to avoid this. Similarly I'm hoping to not have to add member function TCObject::GetX. Invoked with "g++ -c test.cpp" using gcc 4.6.3. Can boost help me organize/parse lots of binary data?

I am receiving a "live" stream of binary data that represents the states of various objects. Sort of like this: Car Speed (m/s): float32 Temperature (deg): uint16 ... My real packets have hundreds of items in them. I will be decoding many of these "packets" and doing various things with them like printing their values to console, etc. My plan is just to make classes: class Car { public: void Decode(istream&); private: float speed; unsigned temperature ... }; But it will not be very extendable. Unfocused open-ended question: Does boost offer something that will help me with this? Thank you, Chris

I'm looking for a good data structure that can *maintain* its elements sorted. Currently I'm trying Boost.Heap<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_53_0/doc/html/heap.html> . I frequently need to orderly traverse the data structure, find a element based on some property and update its priority when it matches. Boost.Heap priority queues provide ordered and non-ordered iterators. Errors compiling for Linux Ubuntu

Hello, Unless my compiler tool chain is off, I am just getting a ton of errors compiling Boost 1.53.0 for Linux Ubuntu. Ultimately, we'll want to cross-compile down to Arch Linux / ARM as well if it makes a difference (and it will). Errors saying failed updating 57 targets, skipped 10150 targets. I am building with all libraries and setting my prefix to /opt/boost_1_53_0. Then I run the ./b2 install. I am basically following the Linux instructions, but apparently, what am I missing? Boost.MSM cc1plus.exe:: error: out of memory allocating 65532

Hi all, I'm using boost.msm from the boost 1.53.0 library. I have together 8 submachines and almost 50 states distributed between the differente submachines. The number of events is 44. Unfortunately I got the following compilation error: * cc1plus.exe:: error: out of memory allocating 65532* First of all I have observed the memory allocation while the compilation phase: It exceeded 2Gm memory and than I've received that error. So, my solution was to switch to an 64 bit system with 8 GB memory. But to hell, I still got this error. My system environment is configured as follows: Operating system : Windows 7 64-Bit MinGW32, gcc v.4.72 Is this an gcc bug or do I have to extend to 16 GB? But I don't think so, as the failue is always reported after almost 2 Gb memory allocation while the compilation phase... [units] Creating a velocity unit

Boost Community, I'm trying to create a custom velocity unit. I would like to create a unit that is in nautical miles per hour to represent my speed value. If I use pound_force.hpp as an example of units with more than one dimension I can create the following. BOOST_UNITS_DEFINE_BASE_UNIT_WITH_CONVERSIONS(metric, nautical_mile_per_hour, "nautical mile per hour", "nmi h^-1", factor, si::velocity, ???); If this is the right track, what id would I use and how do I know that it is unique? This seems forced. I would rather define this unit in terms of meters per second. Nautical miles is already in terms of meters and hours is also defined as a scale of seconds. Can I somehow use these two already defined units to create the new unit? How would I do this? Ryan

Hello, I am having a problem trying to initialize the distributed property map in parallel code. I get a memory access violation when running this part of code: BGL_FORALL_EDGES(e, g, Graph) { remote_key k(rank, index); put(values, k, 0.1); index++; } I followed the distributed_property_map_test, but I cannot figure where is the problem. It fails at the first edge. [fusion, phoenix, spirit2] C++ orientation

Hello, It's been a little while since I've gone into much depth in C++. Been in the C# world for recent years and have a fairly advanced view of that world, through concepts like push-oriented dependency injection, pull-oriented inversion of control (less preferred), functional style programming using anonymous actions, functions, lambdas, and so on. I am working on a project now where we are adopting C++ into the mix, and I would like to get a much better sense for Spirit (likely Spirit2) for purposes of how to run sequences of complex data through various calculations, finds, counts, etc, probably needing to dynamically parse these calculations. Our data will be a series of spiked tuples (one or more) of n-dimensional packed values, and we'll probably need to dynamically parse calculations on the n-dimensions to determine did we satisfy the solution. I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone. It's all very conceptual, very abstract, at this stage of the game. I know, or have a sense, exactly how I might do it in C#, .NET 4, and so on. A little less so what's available in C++, much less boost, spirit, phoenix, fusion, etc. Any insight where to begin would be helpful. Regards, Michael

Greetings! I feel that many questions I have about Boost.Geometry are really questions about the "Boost way and true path". Is there a good place to get started with Boost.Geometry specifically or Boost in general? I feel that I am locking in some basic understanding of how all of these templates fit together, what are Ranges, what are "concepts" etc. Where do I RTFM? Thanks, john
