Hi! I have a problem with std::mem_fun_ref and boost::tuple. Here is my code: I have small LevelSetter class. CUDA and Boost

Hey guys! I have been using Boost inside a Visual C++ CUDA project. I'm using "regex.hpp" inside a ".cu" file and it works fine including it this way: "#include < boost / regex.hpp >". Now, I need to use "abs.hpp", which I'm including this way: "#include < boost / ratio / detail / mpl / abs.hpp >" and it fails while compiling. I'm using Windows 8 64-bits, Visual Studio 2012, Boost 1.53.0 and CUDA 5.5. I get this error only by putting this in my code: "#include < boost / ratio / detail / mpl / abs.hpp >" without using more instructions related with Boost. I have several ".cpp" and ".cu" files in my project. If I put that include in a ".cpp" file, it compiles fine. If I put that include in a ".cu", this error appear: 1>C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\include\boost/ratio/detail/mpl/abs.hpp(68): error C2675: unary '-' : 'T' does not define this operator or a conversion to a type acceptable to the predefined operator Thanks for any help you can provide and sorry for my English, it's not my native language!

boost asio with scatter gather list and udp ....

Hi! I'm new to boost, so I don't understand everything, be kind please ;) I'm working on a piece of code that use boost::asio with a ba::ip::udp::socket the code is sending data using 2 buffers stored in a boost::array my work is to write the receiver and my question is : how many udp packets will be sent? 1? 2? if multiple packets are sent, how does boost::asio will re-order them on reception? if one packet is sent, and if on reception I use another scatter gather list as above (but with mutable buffers) how does boost know the size of the 2 buffers? thanks and regards MALET Jean-Luc >

[posix_time] ARM clock scaling issue

Hello, I am using the posix_time ptime interface to gauge clock times, universal time (Utc), and do date/time math, subtracting for durations type thing. What I am finding is that the accuracy seems to be fast. By how much I don't know, whether that's by a factor of what, or what not, I do not know. We are encountering this on an ARM platform. Has anyone else experience this? If so what can we do to workaround it? Assuming we stick with the Boost API to comprehend date/time, duration, our stopwatch abstraction, elapsed-timer, and so on. Meta State Machine, wayward transition

Hello, I have a simple state machine, that uses only standard rows and no internal transitions, to which I am sending events that are clearly in the transition table for the state that the machine is in, yet the no_transition handler is running for this particular event. I have not yet been able to discover any reasons for a compiling transition table to fail to process an event that is listed in the row against the source state. Have I missed something fundamental? Interoperability of multiple boost versions.

Hi all, I'm currently working on a large software project having an unchangeable dependency on boost 1.33, but I would like to use functionality from a more up-to-date version of the library (say 1.54). Can it be done? If so, how ? One of the things we aim to achieve is use the std::hash and unoredered_map from boost 1.54, while also using othe containers from boost 1.33. Since boost if mostly header only and template-based, using an intermediary interface doesn't work well. Any ideas ? Are we better off using another library instead of boost to avoid conflicts ? [geometry] problems with the ring concept

I have an existing geometric structure, and i try to make it usable with boost geometry. [logging] operator<< not called if logger initialized by init_from_settings()

Following the standard recipe for a severity logger, I failed to get a logger configured by parsing a settings file to property invoke the operator<< for the severity. I tested by creating two logs, one by parsing and one by explicit construction (attached). Below, the former (starting with "parse: ") does not call the operator<< while the latter (staring with (const: ") does: [[ parse: : <> normal 1 severity_enum.cpp:25: operator<<(0x164dce0, 0) const: : <normal> normal 1 parse: : <> criticial 2 severity_enum.cpp:25: operator<<(0x164dce0, 1) const: : <critical> criticial 2 ]] It also doesn't matter whether the explicitly constructed logger is before the parsed logger: [[ severity_enum.cpp:25: operator<<(0x20b5d40, 0) const: : <normal> normal 1 parse: : <> normal 1 severity_enum.cpp:25: operator<<(0x20b5d40, 1) const: : <critical> criticial 2 parse: : <> criticial 2 ]] I've also tested this with a severity_channel logger with the same result. typedef unsigned int severity_level; (and some #defines) shows that the specialized operator<<(..., severity_level) isn't called at all, but at least the std:: one prints integers: [[ parse: : <0> normal 1 const: : <0> normal 1 parse: : <1> criticial 2 const: : <1> criticial 2 ]] I haven't worked out how to construct a settings object directly (as opposed to using the setting parser). Hello, I was recently tasked with installing boost binaries under windows. I used this command: C:\boost_1_49_0>b2 --build-dir=\boost-build toolset=gcc --build-type=complete stage --prefix=c:\boost-prefix\ install I was expecting the directory c:\boost-prefix to contain boost header and library files; however, that directory contained no files whatsoever. Did I do something wrong? PS: The c:\boost-build directory was filled with intermediate build files. Thank you, Chris

[asio] Infinite loops

I have found that when (ab)using asio in a particular way, it causes a hang in my app, which I think is caused by an infinite loop in asio. I'll state up front that the usage is pretty underhanded, so I may not get much sympathy here :) But it also seems reasonable to not hang. The hang happens only on the two linux platforms I tested, which were centos 5.9 and 6.4. I built it on win7 and mingw 4.6.3 (with slight code changes), and it doesn't hang. The simplified test app demonstrating the hang is pasted at the bottom of this email. I basically just wanted an API to smooth over platform network API differences and also give me a nice iostream class backed by a socket. So there's none of the fancy proactor stuff. There is a need to "reset" the app after socket connections have been established, and one thread is blocked on a socket read. So I needed a way to unblock the thread. Closing the socket seemed like a reasonable way to do it, but I found that simply calling a close() method from a different thread doesn't work; it causes race conditions and crashes, since asio classes seem not to be thread-safe. So I got more devious, and decided to just grab the raw handle and call close() directly on it. That's the underhanded part. I thought asio would figure out that the socket's no longer valid, and propagate an error up to the caller, thus unblocking the thread. But it doesn't, the thread just stays blocked. After doing some gdb tracing, it looked to me like asio is repeatedly polling the socket with epoll/select (I tried the latter by defining BOOST_ASIO_DISABLE_EPOLL) and a timeout, and never breaking out of its loop even though the socket is no longer valid. [units] "Simple" conversion from Kelvin to Celsius

Hello, It's been a couple of years since I've done any work with Boost.Units, and I am finding that I want to make a dimensionally-safe conversion from Kelvin to Celsius. I've got an I2C controller that reports in Kelvin, but I want to report it to the end-user in Celsius. The examples I am finding seem to "almost" fit the bill, but I am having a difficult time extrapolating a sane conversion. First, would help if I understood what the Boost.Units SI (my assumed base-system) base-temperature units were. I gather Fahrenheit? Or is it indeed Kelvin? I could be mistaken. Thank you... Trouble building 1.5.4 on OS X 10.6

Hi, I'm having trouble building 1.5.4 on OS X 10.6 for Intel only Universal builds (32 and 64 bit). This is my command line for b2: ./b2 macosx-version=10.6 macosx-version-min=10.6 threading=multi architecture=x86 address-model=32_64 I've also tried a simpler command line just specifying the architecture and address model, same results. Originally I was having trouble building all the libraries, in particular the thread lib wasn't building. Now mysteriously it is. However the libraries are being built with the ppc and ppc64 architectures as well as i386 and x86_64, which doesn't seem right given the options I'm specifying. You can see the unwanted archs in the build lines too, for example: "g++-4.0" -ftemplate-depth-128 -arch x86_64 -arch i386 -arch ppc64 -arch ppc -O3 -finline-functions -Wno-inline -Wall -gdwarf-2 -fexceptions -Wno-long-double -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 -arch i386 -arch x86_64 -DBOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 -DNDEBUG -I"." -c -o "bin.v2/libs/context/build/darwin-4.0/release/address-model-32_64/architecture-x86/link-static/macosx-version-min-10.6/macosx-version-10.6/threading-multi/unsupported.o" "libs/context/src/unsupported.cpp" There are 4 arch flags near the start for x86_64, i386, ppc64 and ppc. There are also two more for x86_64 and i386 further on, which I assume are the ones the darwin.jam file has added based on my options passed to b2. I'm guessing these build lines are only being shown when there's a problem as there certainly isn't one for every file, but I assume they're representative. Is there any method of retrieve the current severity level from a "boost::log::sources::severity_logger_mt<boost::log::trivial::severity_level>" logger. I have some template code that needs slightly different behavior when it is instantiated with exact types like int or boost::rational rather than when it is instantiated with floating point types. The compile-time test depends on std::numeric_limits<T>::is_exact. I was surprised when this came back false for boost::rational until I found that std::numeric_limits<boost::rational<long>>::is_specialized is false. Shouldn't boost::rational specialize numeric_limits? I'm using boost 1.54.0 with clang: Apple LLVM version 4.2 (clang-425.0.28) (based on LLVM 3.2svn) compiling for C++1.

I build boost 1.54.0 this way (Windows 8 with Visual Studio 2012 x64): b2 address-model=64 toolset=msvc-11.0 --build-type=complete stage --with-filesystem --with-signals --with-system \bootstrap.bat I expect to get a file named 'libboost_filesystem-vc110-mt-gd-1_54.lib' (some boost header file is linking this file via #pragma ...) Unfortunately I get only a 'boost_filesystem-vc110-mt-gd-1_54.lib' and a 'libboost_filesystem-vc110-mt-sgd-1_54.lib' Any idea what I am doing wrong? Best regards, Julian

As of last week AFIO is fully ported to Boost and is now building cleanly on all of the last three major releases of the three most popular C++ compilers. Niall Douglas, my mentor for AFIO, has previously mentioned on the list that we would be asking for your feedback regarding which new features would be most beneficial to the Boost community. [math] Solving quadratic, cubic & quartic functions

I've run into an eigenvalue problem where I need to compute the roots of a cubic polynomial. This is a straight-forward problem to solve analytically, but I want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. The boost::math doc mentions some root-finding functions, but they all seem to be iterative - which should not be neccesary in my case. Can anyone tell me if boost includes any functions for analytically computing the roots of quadratic, cubic and possibly quartic polynomials? Thanks in advance, Fredrik Orderud

Hi, Consider the following task: Given a -) pointer to a function, and -) an iterator range with elements of type void *, the function-ptr shall be called with all the elements in the range as arguments. So conceptionally something like this: template <typename Func, typename Iter> void make_call(Func, Iter begin, Iter end) { int n = std::distance(begin, end); (*Func) (*(begin), *(begin + 1), *(begin + 2), ..., *(begin + n - 1)) } The interface (function declaration) here is +- what I want, the implementation shown of course is dummy-code not working. Does boost provide a more or less easy way to get this implementation smoothly done? C++ is 2003 version, so code must be compatible with e.g. VS 2008.. Note that I would know in principle a way how to do implement it myself, which involves the creation of a separate class for each number of arguments, but that's precisely what I want to avoid and I hope that wheel has already been invented in some boost-library :) thanks and regards, Thomas

Boost::MPI Enum Bug

Hi All, I am writing some software which is using boost::mpi. I think I have run into a slight bug (or at least a limitation) with the library. It is very similar to this question on S/O: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8127442/sending-complex-data-with-skelet… I am sending/receiving a class which has an enum member variable. Using normal send and receive was working fine but then I tried to use the skeleton/content mechanism and now my program failed with a segfault on calling `communicator::isend` with the content. While compiling, the compiler issued a warning about an uninitizialized variable: /home/dan/boost_1_54_0/boost/archive/detail/iserializer.hpp:539:9: warning: ‘i’ may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wuninitialized] I looked and noticed this was a function for handling enum values so I commented out the enum variable from my serialization member function and then the sending worked as expected. It looks like the same cause (using addresses of temporaries) as in the S/O question. If anyone is interested I have written a small example exhibiting this issue. I have a couple of questions regarding this: * Is it possible to get around this limitation/bug?^ * Is boost::mpi still being actively developed? I've found a few discussions about this but none really lead anywhere. Hi, I am trying to cross-compile from linux 64 bits to windows 64 bits. I am using fedora 19 with -std=c++11 and boost 1.53.0 that comes with fedora. The compiler is x86_64-w64-mingw32-g++. Michael, It sounds to me like you're making this altogether too complicated. Don't focus on the software; focus on the science. The size of the "degree" unit is the same for Kelvin and Celsius. (I.e., if the temperature changes by 1 degree K, it changes by exactly 1 degree C.) The only this that is different between Kelvin and Celsius is the zero point. For Kelvin, 0 degrees is absolute zero and there are no negative values of temperature. (Well, that's not quite right, but you'll never encounter the exceptions.) For Celsius, 0 degrees is the freezing point of water at sea level. To convert between Kelvin and Celcius, just add or subtract a constant. That constant has a value of 273.15. That is, you can make a dimensionally-safe conversion from Kelvin to Celcius by subtracting 273.15. Converting from Celsius to Kelvin by adding 273.15. Cheers, Rick Aurbach Aurbach & Associates, Inc. I have a project which has a handy stream filter in the formatter which indents newlines in logged messages to some depth à la: I/O [- 2 +] <loadedData> { <s> <p> <o> . <s> <p> <o2> . } </loadedData> (No, I'm not using an XML decorator above, though perhaps I should be.) graph theoretical problem

Dear All, does the boost graph library provide a solution to the problem I'm trying to solve: I want to distribute a set of tasks to multiple CPUs/Threads. The tasks have predecessor and successor dependencies. There are no loops. More often than not, a task consists of only very few operations. So if I brute force program this, the resulting code is busy only with scheduling -- the real code does not show up in the profiling results. I think this can be solved by collapsing some tasks into a single task to minimize scheduling/communication. I've got a cost function associated with every task. [bgl] adding nodes recursively

Hello all: I have a game with multiple rooms, which I would like to map to a graph. Given this, I have a couple of questions. One of my goals is to separate each individual area and have it on it's own graph, then connect the graphs. Is this a possibility? I remember reading about connected graphs for my data structures class, but we didn't get to far with them. My second issue is I will have a vector of rooms, which all have exits. Each individual room will be a vertex with the exits being the edges. I can recursively add all the exits that a room points to, then come back and add the rest of the exits. But there may be two exits pointing to the same room. Is there a quick way that I could insure that rather than creating a new vertex, I could just point the edge to the preexisting vertex? Finally, i have one other question. I plan to create resources based on a bunch of different factors. Basically I need a way to determine the closest resources and perhaps get the shortest path to them, or the weight of all of the edges that would point to the n closest resources that were spawned. Stability of Boost::Serialization XML Output

Hi List, I have to provide digital signatures of serialized C++ objects, I'm planing on using Boost::Serialization for the XML part. Since XML signatures and XMLDsig in particular are difficult [1] and littered with pitfalls I was wondering if maybe the XML output of Boost::Serialization is stable enough to do a plain byte-oriented PKCSwhatever signature? To summarize: - C++ objects are serialized to XML with Boost::Serialization (XML is used since date has to be as human readable as possible). - Serialized XML has to be digitally signed. - XMLDsig is complicated [1] Question: Does Boost::Serialization with the XML backend produce bytewise the same data every time? Hi, I faced to a strange problem. I'm working with root fsm & child fsm. Child fsm has an exit point called "End". I use vs2012u3, boost 1.54 transition table from root looks like that: struct Waiting : state<> {}; // Child is typedef for back-end struct transition_table : public boost::mpl::vector< ... Row < Waiting, begin, Child >, Row < Child::exit_pt<Child::End>, none, Waiting >, ... > {}; So, when I use F-C-T- policy, the Child fsm is stuck in Child::End state, the root fsm never moves to Waiting again. It doesn't happen with default policy. I noticed, that there is a note in msm's changelog From V2.24 to V2.25 (Boost 1.54) • Bugfix: Exit points broken for the favor_compile_time policy. looks similar to my case. Christophe, can you check that bugfix?

Specifically, I want to use it to turn error codes returned by unix system calls like socket, accept, listen etc. into thrown exceptions. Boost.Asio, 0MQ, and Windows

I have been following the excellent advice on using 0MQ and Boost.Asio on a POSIX-ish platform (MacOS) at <http://preview.tinyurl.com/jw4krek>. Unfortunately, though, I am writing code which needs to work on both POSIX-ish and Windows. I'm not having much luck, so far, with my attempts to translate this advice to the Windows side. I can't seem to figure out how to match the type returned by getsockopt(ZMQ_FD) on Windows and what I think should be the Windows equivalents of boost::asio::posix::stream_descriptor. Here is what I've tried: zmq::context_t zenv(1); zmq::socket_t zocket(zenv, ZMQ_PUSH); SOCKET zfd; std::size_t zfd_size = sizeof(zfd); zocket.getsockopt(ZMQ_FD, &zfd, &zfd_size); boost::asio::io_service ios; boost::asio::windows::stream_handle io(ios, zfd); And the error I get when I try to compile it. 2>Z:\zee-zmq-socket.cpp(14): error C2664: \ 'boost::asio::windows::basic_stream_handle<>::basic_stream_handle(\ boost::asio::io_service &,void *const &)' : cannot convert parameter \ 2 from 'SOCKET' to 'void *const &' 2> Reason: cannot convert from 'SOCKET' to 'void *const ' 2> Conversion from integral type to pointer type requires \ reinterpret_cast, C-style cast or function-style cast So far, my Google-fu has been weak; I can only seem to find examples which deal with Boost.Asio and 0MQ on POSIX-ish. Iostreams with two filters throws exception

I've been attempting to use Boost.Iostreams with two filters to compress + encrypt ("out") and decrypt + uncompress ("in"). This works for some files, while others throw an exception during the "in" phase. If I remove either of the filters for out/in (e.g. remove the compress or the encrypt) everything works fine -- the issue only occurs with two filters chained. >From what I understand in the documentation, this should be supported, but I must be missing something. To elaborate on Ion's remarks, ALL virtual memory in user space in windows is backed by the page file, and ALL file I/O is memory mapped, the only difference being virtual memory is backed by the page file rather than a specific named file in the file system. Your inter process memory is just as likely to be in physical memory as any other data. So most likely this is not the cause of your performance issue, unless memory is so tight that your entire process working set is continually thrashing. You can perfectly call those functions yourself as you don't need any internal Interprocess data to call them. [zlib] Compression intended use

Hello, This is probably out of scope with boost's intended usage pattern, but I'll ask anyhow. I've got a package of output files that I want to bundle, tarball, gzip, or however I can manage to compress them. I see there is the zlib usage, but methinks that is more for in-memory compression. Below is a little app that illustrates the issue (Can also be found here: http://pastebin.com/k8jRN64R) I've removed most error handling/etc. for illustration purposes. The program expects a "input.txt" to be present in the same directory it's run from. Note again that this works *most* of the time, but depending on the input file, will crash. Also I forgot to mention before that I'm using Clang on OS X 8.4 and Boost v1.53. Dear all, I get a compilation error with Boost.Variant (which compiles fine on previous releases) with vstudio 2010 when a function returns a const Boost.Variant, e.g.: typedef boost::variant<int, double> Variant; const Variant GetVar() { return Variant(); } void TestVariantDnc() { const Variant var = GetVar(); } This gives error C2666 ('boost::variant<T0_,T1>::convert_construct' : 3 overloads have similar conversions'). Shall a file a ticket or do I something wrong?

Releasing Boost Dependency Analyzer 1.1

Hello boost community, a short notice that I just have released the version 1.1 of my dependency analyzing tool for boost. For now I have only managed to get a proper Windows Version, Linux Version will follow later. New Features: Configuration - the tool remembers the path to bcp now - select the source for libraries - maintainers.txt - libraries.xml - 2 filter options - filter libraries by name - filter edges by type, for now its header, source/lib, test and documentation. Export: - Export CSV File which has all libraries and the number of dependencies (sorted) libraries.xml - this is now a optional source for the library names Some feedback: libraries.xml as a lib name source is nice, but not quite perfect. I've seen different results from maintainers.txt and libraries.xml. As maintainers.txt also libraries.xml contains duplicates, some of its library names don't fit the expectation of bcp, so I applied some fixes for this in my program. The Dependency filter is yet not perfect, especially in detection. Compiling Boost 1.54.0 for the iOS simulator (6.1) on OS X 10.8.4

Hello, I am new to the Boost mailing list so please let me know if this is not the appropriate place to discuss my problem. I have successfully managed to compile several of the Boost libraries (regex, filesystem, thread) and create a framework for use with OS X, iOS, and the iOS simulator using this script: https://github.com/wuhao5/boost/blob/188e905626dbd522f65950102ed0c8ce77cb28… on Peter Goodliffe's work here: http://goodliffe.blogspot.com/2010/09/building-boost-framework-for-ios-ipho… Boost 1.53.0 using clang and linking against libc++. The script fails when compiling for the iOS simulator with Boost 1.54.0 with the following error:/bin/sh: line 1: -ftemplate-depth-128: command not found. I did quite a bit of digging and here is what I know: * In boost.sh, the iOS simulator bjam and compiler options include "-arch i386" * The release notes for Boost 1.54.0 state that "Boost no longer supports the 80386 target CPU" * The Boost 1.53.0 libraries mentioned above appear to compile fine for OS X, iOS, and the iOS simulator using the same script * The Boost 1.54.0 libraries appear to compile fine for OS X and iOS itself using the same script Here is what I think I know: * When passing "-d13" to bjam (to generate debug information), it appears that the variable "CONFIG_COMMAND" is not being set when building for the iOS simulator. For the other configurations, this variable is set to the path to clang and includes the compiler options. For the simulator, it is empty which I believe leads to the error above as when bjam attempts to run the compiler using this variable, it instead runs some appended options which begin with the template depth. Therefore, the CONFIG_COMMAND variable does not appear to be being set properly causing the failure. I do not know why it's not being set as I don't know enough about the Boost build system to sift through the rest of the output generated with the "-d13" flag. I suspect an incompatibility with the "-arch i386" option was introduced with 1.54.0. I've tried changing this to "-arch i486" and "-arch x86_32" but the same problem occurs. Has anyone else had success with this? I'd like to use Boost.Log which is why I'm even attempting this with 1.54. Thanks!

Hello, Need a little help grasping the nature of parse_config_file. The example: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_54_0/doc/html/program_options/tutorial.html… also seems a bit lacking: says that there are two calls to store, but I only see one. Maybe the example has not been updated? What I need to know is, if we specify some options, do we specify the same option names in a config file? So that if we have an option on the command like like: --my-option-name 1234, then the corresponding line in the config file would go: my-option-name=1234 ? Thank you. Regards, Michael Powell

cannot use boost asio 1.43 with visual studio 2008

Hello, I tried using boost 1.43 with my project and am having a problem compiling using the asio libraries. There is a namespace 'generic' and my VS (2008 and 2010) doesn't allow that word. I am guessing it is a keyword in visual studio? Is there a way I can disable the use of the 'generic' keyword? I have attached several files for classes to this e-mail. * BaseClass - the base class, which has a serialize method * DerivedClass - a sub-class with its own serialize method * InstantiableClass - the class actually instantiated from DerivedClass * Main - code example of the client/server that serializes and de-serializes the InstantiableClass object. Our system automatically inserts some pre-compiled headers so to get the code to compile you may need to add your own #includes. The output from the main program is this: Serializing... BOOST: I am an Instantiable class object BOOST: I am in BaseClass::serialize Assertion failed: dynamic_cast<InstantiableClass&>(object).getCom() == 20, file Main.cc, line 8 This highlights the polymorphism problem in a nutshell. The overloaded what() method is telling me that in both the client and server code the objects is an InstantiableClass object. However the Derived::serialize is not being called on either side. Thus the data (m_com) from the DerivedClass is not being serialized and is lost. The compiler, and debugger, is telling me my object is an InstantiableClass, however when boost calls serialize on the object, the code in the BaseClass and not the Derived class is being called. Removing all support for Visual C++ 7.0, GCC 3.2 and other old compilers

Hello all, There has been some discussion on the development list about dropping all support for old C++ compilers. This will allow us to remove a lot of workarounds and simplify the code but before doing so it's a good idea to find out if anyone is still using them. Using boost with these compilers will cause a compile error in the config library (you can work round that using a custom configuration, but it's unlikely you'll be able to get much to work). The currently proposed versions for removing support are: Digital Mars 8.40 and earlier Visual C++ 7.0 and earlier GCC 3.2 and earlier Intel C++ 5.0 and earlier Which is, I think, a very cautious list. There's also a good chance that we might want to remove support for Borland C++ 5.x. Is there anyone still using those compilers? Just to be clear, this doesn't mean we'll be fully supporting all compilers later than these. Old compilers such as Visual C++ 7.1 and gcc 3.4 won't have a config error and we won't deliberately remove support, but support will be patchy. Many libraries (especially new ones) don't support those compilers, and we also don't have any formal testing for them, so if a new change breaks something, it might not be noticed. If you are still using compilers which are a little more recent than the ones listed above, it might still be worth mentioning in case we consider removing support for them in the future. Hi, I am trying to add a support for degenerate / corner cases for my JSON parser. First I needed support for malformed null values for object members like that: obj : { "bad_member: , "correct_member: null } I would like the parser to generate same result for both members in that case (null value). My array parser looks like this: array = '[' >> value % ',' >> ']'; which is only god for 1 or more element list. Trying out Build on Windows, have questions

After using a bunch of IDEs to compile my trial Boost code on Windows, I'm trying out Boost's included build system. I've been using the directions at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_54_0/more/getting_started/index.html. I'm using a 32-bit Windows 8 Pro laptop. I have the MinGW-Builds version of GCC 4.8.1 installed. I downloaded a copy of Clang 3.3, built with the aforementioned GCC. I also have Visual Studio Express 2012 (v11.0) installed, the Desktop version along with the Metro and Web versions. The copy of Clang is installed into the same directories as GCC, and the "bin" sub-directory is in my PATH. I'm using a Subversion copy of the Boost libraries. Per the Getting Started instructions, I changed to the Boost Subversion directory and ran "bootstrap." I'm using a "user-config.jam" file of: //===== using gcc : 4.8 : : <cxxflags>-std=c++11 ; using msvc : 11.0 : "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\bin\cl" ; using clang : 3.3 : : <cxxflags>-std=c++11 ; //===== Then I ran ".\b2", and the GCC version of the Boost libraries were built. Then I ran ".\b2 toolset=msvc" for the Visual Studio version. When I tried ".\b2 toolset=clang", it failed miserably since it couldn't find any of the standard headers. Now I've heard that Clang can build for Windows, but actually using it is broken (no matter how it's built). Is there a way to adjust the clang entry in my "user-config.jam" so it gets all the stuff it needs from the GCC installation? Thanks to everyone who's replied to my previous boost logging question - still having some issues I'm afraid :S I've been struggling with boost log for a while now - I got their simple example writing to a log file (http://boost-log.sourceforge.net/libs/log/example/doc/tutorial_file.cpp) However, when I try to copy that code into my own 'Logger' class, I can't get it to write to the log file. Boost Iterator: Limiting an existing iterator

Hello, I'm writing a C++ class which has an STL container as a data member, and I'd like to write an iterator class which allows to iterate through the container. Which container is used, is implementation detail. I want the iterator to be a ForwardIterator, even if a random-access container is used, e.g. std::vector. What's the quick and simple way to define an iterator adapter class which uses the "base" iterator's functions, but only the ones supported by a forward iterator? The reason I need it is error detection. If the user gets a random-access iterator and treats it as such, the compiler won't complain, but in future versions of my code the user's code may break because random access shouldn't really be supported, e.g. if I change from vector to list. [asio] using libgamin

Hello, one can use "signal_set" to connect to a SIGHUP signal and then reload a configuration file. I am thinking about a different approach. What about using libgamin to get notified if the config file changes and then reload automatically, if the config file is correct and valid. Is it possible to implement that behavior with asio? I read through the reference but I couldn't find something. I am not yet familiar with all aspects of asio. Perhaps I have overread it. [Wave] Making wave driver work with 0 arguments passed as __VA_ARGS__

Hello everyone, I'm porting some g++ code to MSVC, and I'm trying to use the Boost.Wave driver executable as a preprocessor instead of Visual Studio's. Boost 1.54.0. I'm generally successful, but I'm having trouble with macros like these: #define LOG(msg, ...) whatever Usage examples: LOG("Hello world!"); LOG("Hello and print out some variables", foo, bar); Both g++ and MSVC have custom extensions that make these examples work, but Wave is pretty strict and follows the standard to the letter, so gives the error message "not enough arguments for macro LOG" for the first example. I know it's possible to rewrite each macro like this in a standard-compliant way, but it's a lot of work and gets complicated if I want recursive macro invocation. Is it possible to enable this behaviour in wave somehow? Do I need to compile Wave Driver with a specific option? I searched through the docs and tried looking at the code, but I can't find anything. Hello, I use Boost.Interprocess on Windows 2003 Server. I am experiencing performances troubles. I am trying to understand what happens, and arrived on Microsoft web pages. I seems that on Windows, shared memory is implemented only through mapped files, and that only a portion of the shared memory is physically in the RAM (this limited number of pages is called "working set"). The Windows API provides some functions for this working set : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc441804%28v=vs.85%… I would have liked Interprocess wraps the functions GetProcessMemoryInfo() and SetProcessWorkingSetSize(), so that the full shared memory is put in RAM. But for now, I fear it is impossible to have with Interprocess performances similar to the ones provided by the alternative : data in the process memory.

Hello, I'm a newbie in this library and I feel a little bit lost. I have the following problem: I currently have an image of the type ` boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t`. I need to pass it to a function (from a code I don't mantain) with this prototype: void function(const boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t& input, const int index, const boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t &output) I have created an output image by using the following syntax: boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t output(input._dynamic_cast<boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t::view_t>()); At this point, the compiler accepts the image output as input for the function. However, I need the image back to the `boost::gil::rgb8c_view_t` type. Storing path from A*, using operator::new with boost::multi_array

I'm trying to use dynamic memory allocation for the first time. I want to allocate memory for a 2 dim dynamic array, to store paths from an A* function. I think the array for the job is boost::multi_array. Hello, I am trying to compile a source file that utilizes boost::multi_array. When I try to compile the file with the option -std=c++0x, I get the following error: /apps/boost_1_48/include/boost/multi_array/extent_gen.hpp(62): error: class "boost::detail::multi_array::extent_gen<2UL>" has no suitable copy constructor return extent_gen<NumRanges+1>(*this,range(0,idx)); ^ detected during instantiation of "boost::detail::multi_array::extent_gen<<expression>> boost::detail::multi_array::extent_gen<NumRanges>::operator[](boost::detail::multi_array::index={ptrdiff_t={long}}) [with NumRanges=1UL]" at line 48 of When I compile the same source file without -std=c++0x option, it compiles fine. Deserializing Boost archives using C#

Hi, I'm currently writing a component in C++ which creates a hierarchy of objects, and serializes them using the Boost serialization library. The serialized archive consists of a root "Document" object, which consists of an STL vector of "Pages". Each page consists of an STL vector of other object types, which themselves have sub-objects. The platform is Microsoft Windows. At some time in the future I want to port the component to C#. One option would be to call the Boost library from C# using interop, but I'd rather try to code it completely in C#, as that would bring a lot of portability benefits. What I'd ideally like to do therefore is in the future to deserialize with C# any files currently being saved with C++. Since Boost provides XML archives I thought I'd look at changing from my current text archives to XML archives. That was straightforward and I'm now saving to XML archives. I'm now starting to look at whether it possible to deserialize an XML archive using C#, possibly by writing a skeleton test component in C#. I'm pretty familiar with C#, but not XML serialization in C#, so I'm not sure yet how to map the XML elements (and class ids ?) to C# objects. In the meantime I was wondering if any one has done anything like this or had any thoughts on whether this approach is feasible? [Boost.Log] compiling issue of trivial example under boost version 1.5.4

Hi All - I was trying to compile the boost log example code under boost_1_54_0/libs/log/example/trivial/. I basically want to have a simple logger with filter function. So the example code serves the purpose. I got the attached error message while trying to compile. I think my compile command is fine because if I comment out the section of " core::get()->set_filter ( trivial::severity >= trivial::info ); " it compiles and runs fine. Can someone please provide some insight of how to make the severity filter work? [datetime] to/from ISO

Hello, I have a cross platform date/time quirk I want to work out. I am using Boost DateTime Posix to_iso_string and from_iso_string to pass date/time fields over the wire. What I am finding is that C# .NET DateTime and/or Boost DateTime Posix ISO do not agree, at least where ISO format is concerned. So... Is it a Boost issue? Or a .NET issue? I'm not positive, but the ISO format goes something like this: "YYYY-mm-DDTHH:MM:SS" Whereas Boost interpretation of that is something like: "YYYYmmDDT..." Something else after 'T', not sure, is that seconds since the epoch? Something like that. Anyway. Parsing the tree is falling over on that interpretation. A workaround is to leave the field out (for now), but longer term I would like to preserve the time field in whatever date/time format will work and parse ubiquitously over the wire. interprocess file_lock timed_lock not returning false after timeout

Hi all! I think there are two issues, one is a documentation issue, the other might be a bug with boost::interprocess file_lock. The documentation issue is that it was not clear to me by reading the documentation on file_lock that it is a RAII-style class. By reading that it has process lifetime, I assumed that once acquired, the lock would be held even after the file_lock object is destroyed. Once I figured this out, I changed the file_lock to a static method variable and ran into the following issue. I have two processes that use the following class method that I wrote. They both try to acquire a lock on the same file and the lock must be held until the process exits. When I start the first process, it acquires the lock correctly. serialization of standard unordered containers

I have a several classes that currently use old-fashioned ("ordered") containers that would benefit greatly from using the C++11 unordered variants. But in the version of boost I'm currently using (1.49.0) serialization of those containers is not supported. So I have some questions: 1. Is serialization of standard unordered containers supported in version 1.54.0 of the boost libraries? 2a. If so, what was the earliest version of the boost libraries that supported serialization of standard unordered containers? 2b. If not, is there a timetable for when this might be added? (The documentation and comments I could find gave completely inconsistent answers on this issue, so I'd like a definitive answer before I go to the trouble of installing a more recent version of boost if that's not going to help.) Hello, Okay, this is kind of a Boost question, and kind of not. Kind of a C++ question, and kind of not. Depends where I can find a workable solution. First, I am using Sourcery CodeBench in a more recent (not the most recent) version. I believe it is one revision back from most recent. Targeting (Arch)Linux/ARM. I believe I answered my question from online references: http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/utility/move, which I've also confirmed is a C++0x experimental feature in the version of CodeBench I am using. It may be more or less up to date when I upgrade to the latest CodeBench. If the experimental doesn't work out, is there a Boost alternative? If so, where do I include it? Thank you... [asio] reconnect without close the socket, is it possible?

Hi, I want to know if the connection is broken up at some point, can I reconnect without shutdown-close the socket. On Windows, I keep getting already_connected error when reconnecting but still fails to do other async read/write... Also, any way to test if the socket is connected? Thanks.

Hello, I am having a hard time getting my Asio usage off the ground. I started with what I thought was a nominal (knock on wood) asynchronous server, which runs in a worker thread, but was running into seg fault issues. In the interest of "simplifying" the issue, I decided to simplify to a "blocking" server, hopefully also hosted in a thread, but am also running into seg fault issues. First I am trying to capture the server instance in a lambda passing it to a thread as a runner. Then I am trying to capture a shared pointer to the server thinking there is some move semantic or something. Seg fault in either case. Most of the examples are one main being the sole main thread hosting the io_service. Would that this were the case with me. This has to be one worker among several other workers running in the same process. Wouldn't mind if there were a couple of ideas recommending what I might explore next. Thank you... Hi, I'm developing an application for Windows and Mac. My source compiles and links fine, but I'm having a problem when building the code on the Mac (OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, Xcode 4.6 using GCC). Some basic questions about Boost filtering_streams. I have dozens of functions that presently take a parameter of std::ofstream&. I've compiled, linked and run the commonly cited boost filtering_stream test code for packing and unpacking and it worked perfectly for me. Now I'd like to try to substitute my use of std::ofstream& with the filtering_stream: void StreamSomeCompressedTextToFile(char* fileName) { ofstream myFileStream(destPath, std::ios_base::out | std::ios_base::app | std::ios_base::binary); boost::iostreams::filtering_streambuf<boost::iostreams::output> myCompressedFileStream; myCompressedFileStream.push(boost::iostreams::zlib_compressor()); myCompressedFileStream.push(myFileStream); foo(myCompressedFileStream); // I can't just pass myCompressedFileStream to foo(std::ofstream&), right? myFileStream.close(); } THREE QUESTIONS: 1) Do all my functions that previously accepted std::ofstream& outStream need to now accept a parameter of type boost::iostreams::filtering_streambuf<boost::iostreams::output>& ? Or, is there a proper parameter type so those numerous ("foo") functions could work with EITHER type of stream type? 2) In my simple test cases, I was not able to use stream operator syntax with the filtering_streambuf: myCompressedFileStream << "some text"; this generated the the error: no match for 'operator<<'. I similarly had compile errors with write(): `error: 'class boost::iostreams::filtering_streambuf<boost::iostreams::output, char, std::char_traits<char>, std::allocator<char>, boost::iostreams::public_>' has no member named 'write`' Could this be a missing header? If so, I haven't been able to determine which one. 3) In the common test case example code (below), I was confused that I could not locate the file "hello.z" after it had been created.
