[boost::thread] Starting thread at specific time

Hello all, I am working on an application which I originally wrote as a console app and am now transforming into a Windows service. Basically, looking for a little advice. My goal is to have an independent service which starts at a specific time and only runs for a set amount of hours. Based on the code above, I want to run the service for 10 hours, but not start it until the correct hour. Somewhere near the end of the service entry I will restart the service and the service *should* until the correct time and only execute for X hours. I am looking for further suggestions/improvements based on the above. Thanks!

boost::geometry::index::rtree with different CoordinateSystem

Hi, I am trying to build a rtree index with a collection if waypoint (about 30.000) each represented by longitude and latitude. When I use Cartesian coordinates rtree.query works as expected. However the results are slightly wrong because of my use of longitude,latitude in the cartesian domain. I then tried to refine the datatypes to use spherical_equatorial and geographic CoordinateSystem. Now I encounter two problems: a) With geographic, it does not compile. b) With spherical_equatorial query(nearest) gives clearly wrong results. Do you have any clues on what I am doing wrong? Attached is two images illustrating the query results. Search target is dot with label on it. don't give template arguments to make_iterator_range

Hi, I recently came across an issue with make_iterator_range(), which is used to externally construct iterator_range objects. The problem is that if a template argument is explicitly specified, gcc 4.8.2 refuses to compile the code. In the meantime, clang 3.4 compiles it without warnings. This runs contrary to the intuition that specifying a template argument can only help (speed up) compilation. You might want to make a note about this in the documentation to Boost Range: "Don't give an explicit template argument to make_iterator_range! If you do, the program will be ill-formed!" The heavily simplified problem is explained here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22258054/c-inconsistency-between-gcc-and… The internal Boost Range details are the following. As described here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/range/doc/html/range/reference/ut… make_iterator_range has 5 overloads, all of which are template functions. Consider the 1st and 4th overloads: template <typename It> iterator_range<It> make_iterator_range(It, It); template <typename R> iterator_range<typename range_iterator<R>::type> make_iterator_range(Range&, typename range_difference<R>::type, typename range_difference<R>::type); The problem occurs if I write something like: Some_Iterator it; auto r = make_iterator_range<Some_Iterator>(it, it); Specifically, when gcc encounters this call to make_iterator_range, for a reason I don't fully understand (but others do, see the reply on SO), it does not eliminate the 2nd overload listed above from consideration, and instead it tries to instantiate the bogus type range_iterator<R> with R=Some_Iterator. I say "bogus" because the template argument of range_iterator is meant to be a range, not an iterator. In turn, this triggers a compilation error. In the meantime, clang happily eliminates the 2nd overload, probably based on the fact that it needs 3 arguments, not 2 as are given in the call. The problem disappears if I don't give an explicit template argument: auto r = make_iterator_range(it, it); even though the correct overload is indeed the first one, with argument Some_Iterator. Apparently giving an explicit template argument at that point makes the program ill-formed. I don't fully understand why, but see the SO comments. M

boost::tribool "if ( someTriboolVar == indeterminate )" semantics is confusing

I started using tribool recently. I just discovered that I was using it incorrectly. I had code that did something like: tribool triboolVar1 = indeterminate; if ( triboolVar1 == indeterminate ) { cout << "triboolVar1 is indeterminate" << endl; } else { cout << "triboolVar1 is NOT indeterminate" << endl; } I was expecting this to print "triboolVar1 is indeterminate". However it prints "triboolVar1 is NOT indeterminate". I ended up looking through "include/boost/logic/tribool.hpp" and after a bit of head scratching, I think I understand why this doesn't do what I expect: The above "if" line is "really" (pseudo-code): if ( operator==(tribool triboolVar1,tribool indeterminate) ) { where operator== returns a tribool, and (I think) tribool::operator safe_bool() const { return value == true_value? &dummy::nonnull : 0; } is used to turn the tribool into a bool. And give that operator== says: ... if (indeterminate(x) || indeterminate(y)) return indeterminate; ... Then clearly no matter what the value of triboolVar1 is, the "if" code will be false. Boost Serialization Difference in Archive Versions

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm having an issue with boost serialization. I have serialized a file on my ODroid U2 using Boost v1.53. Boost documentation hasn't helped me determine the differences between the 2 archive versions. I've only been able to find answers for how to deserialize an older archive. Please note, I don't do anything with BOOST_CLASS_VERSION. CMyClass hasn't changed at all. I can't imagine boost can handle the deserialization of a newer archive so I don't feel like I'm missing that answer. What I need to know if if there is a way I can serialize in v1.53 based on boost archive version 9 instead of 10. I'm hoping the new version of boost will still allow me to serialize at an older version. Then, I should be able to deserialize the archive just fine. CMake and Boost

Hello All, I built boost libraries with the option build-type=complete and created libraries for various options, like gcc54-mt, gcc45-mt-d, gcc45-mt-s, gcc-54mt-sd etc. I have similar ones for intel toolchain too. Now, how do I force CMake to link to the correct library file out of many versions? Do I have to specify the full library name? Or can I specify the build type, like debug, multi-threading etc and leave the CMake to choose the right file to link? Is there such an option? I'm building on Linux under gcc and intel compilers and keeping both gcc and intel library files in one folder. Thank you all for being there to help the community. --Kotesh

Hello All, I'm a newbie to this mailing list. I am trying to build static boost libraries and link to my libraries. I used ./bjam debug link=static cxxflags="-std=c++0x" stage to build the boost libraries. When I build my libraries (shared or static) with linking to boost libraries, I get the following error: libboost_regex.a(instances.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `.bss' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC libboost_regex.a: could not read symbols: Bad value Then I tried adding -fPIC while building my boost libraries. [Boost.Log] logging only in a debug build

Hi, Is there a way with Boost.Log to have logging code emitted in a debug build but completely removed for release. The only way I can come up with is to have #if defs and #endif's scattered throughout the code. Has anyone come up with a better way? Any help appreciated. Kind Regards Sean.

[BGL] Shared nodes on path

Dear all, I have a simple question about the most efficient way of finding shared nodes between a path and a graph. Let me be more explicit. I have an oriented graph G, and a very simple graph P, which is actually a simple oriented path (n0 -> n1 -> ... -> nK). I need to find *all* the possible shared paths between P and G with the same length as P. For instance, being P = n1 -> n2 -> n3 -> n4 -> n5 -> n6 we may find that the G and P share only two sub-paths n1 -> n2 -> n3 n5 -> n6 I'd like to find all sub-graphs that connect the two paths, for instance having n1 -> n2 -> n3 -> n10 -> n5 -> n6 n1 -> n2 -> n3 -> n42 -> n5 -> n6 with the constraint that the solution must be a path with the same length as P, therefore a solution as these n1 -> n2 -> n3 -> n9 -> n8 -> n5 -> n6 n1 -> n2 -> n3 -> n5 -> n6 would not be acceptable. I know I can do it manually, but I think a BGL-aware solution is quite better that a manual search :) Thanks & Cheers!

boost::optional with BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_ADT broken?

There's an issue using get expressions returning optionals with BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_ADT, demonstrated in the simplest case below. Optional<T> is trying initialize its internal T object using the attribute proxy object returned by fusion, but this can only degrade to optional<T> and not T, so the assignment fails. C++ wizard, K-Ballo, took a quick look at this in #boost and seemed to suggest it's the way op= is SFINAEd up for optional. boost graph, Using Bundled Properties and Internal Properties at the same time

Dear list, Related to the other email of me I woud like to use the subgraphs class, but the base graph needs two internal properties: vertex_index and edge_index. However in my program I use bundled properties as suggested in this list some time ago. Now I have this problem, is possible to use internal and bundled properties in the same graph? Strange problem with boost/graph/subgraph.hpp

Dear list, I cannot compile a simple example using the subgraph implementation. I enclosed the code in the bottom of this email. It is quite short, but it is the whole code. It does not compile with errors from inside boost/graph/detail/adjacency_list.hpp about the impossiblity of making a reference to void. I read the subgraph documentation but I cannot understand why it does not work. Can anyone enlighten me? Project link error with Wave on OSX

I've just updated a project that was working under XCode 4 with boost 1.48 to XCode 5 and boost 1.55 (installed with MacPorts). Now I have a link error with Wave which wasn't the case before. This somehow baffles me as I thought everything was template based. I am also linking with libboost-wave.mt.a but that doesn't solve the problem. Hello. I'm newbie for boost library. I'm trying to write a HTTP Parser, which handles the HTTP message coming from the proxy server. I don't know much about the boost, so I'm really confused on what to use to write my functionality. When I search on the internet, some say that I need to used Boost.Asio and Some say Boost.Spirit. When I looked over the document for each, I found that Boost.Asio is like network library for C++ and Boost.Spirit is for writing compilers. As I mention above, I want to write a http parser. Dear list, In the boost/graph/metric_tsp_approx.hpp:224 is a note // TODO: This is will be O(n^2) if vertex storage of g != vecS. Since I am exactly in this situation I made a patch for my use, I added a bundled property to MSTImpl's vertices to contain a descriptor to keep track of the original graph vertices. It is a small modification, but since there is a TODO perhaps there is interest? If so how should I share it? Of course any comment is welcome. Your sincerely, Paolo

Dear Icl users, due to a subtle effect of the changed hint semantics for associative containers, the icl library is broken in versions <= 1.55.0 when used with new STL-libraries that implement the new c++11 standard. This bug is fixed in the upcoming Boost 1.56.0. (see regression tests at http://www.boost.org/development/tests/master/developer/icl.html) Since the release of boost 1.56.0 seems to take longer than planned due to restructuring efforts for modular-boost, users of Boost.Icl affected by the problem may choose to pull the fixed Boost.Icl directly from the git repository and replace your_boost_1_55_0/boost/icl with the new code. The libs/icl part does not need an update. Another possibility is to apply the patch-file diff_icl_1_55_0_and_master.patch that is attached to this post to your local boost library 1.55.0: 1. cd to your_boost_1_55_0 root directory. your_boost_1_55_0> 2. [c++11] the first element z in c that is greater than x, so x can be inserted *before* that hint. In Boost.Icl I used the returned hint-iterator of the insert function, that always returned the last overlapping interval y for an inserted interval x given the interval's exclusive-less ordering under c++98. With the changed hint semantics, this returned hint-iterator did not point to the last interval y overlapping x anymore but to the first interval z not overlapping x. Intrusive unordered set and thread safety

Hi, I have been playing around with the boost intrusive unordered set. If my application is multi-threaded I do not see any way to make the set thread safe at a bucket level. I have seen a previous post from November 2012 "[Intrusive] unordered_set and thread safety" which asked the same question. At that point it was not implemented but I have not seen any updates in that area since. My question is, has it been implemented or is there a plan to implement such a feature in the near future? Windows doesn't have to write to disk if there is no memory pressure in the case of a page file but if you have an explicit file being mapped, then you'll get writes to disk. [iostreams] gzip problem

Hi @boost, I have a file format containing chunks of gzipped data (using gzip_decompressor/gzip_compressor). Inbetween these chunks there is other (plain) data. So can keep the archive seekable. However apparently this doesn't work out as it should. Whenever gzip_decompressor reaches the end of a chunk it throws an exception. The trouble-making line is in basic_gzip_decompressor::read: if (footer_.done()) { if (footer_.crc() != this->crc()) boost::throw_exception(gzip_error(gzip::bad_crc)); int c = boost::iostreams::get(peek); if (traits_type::is_eof(c)) { ----------------------------- state_ = s_done; } else { peek.putback(c); base_type::close(peek, BOOST_IOS::in); state_ = s_start; header_.reset(); footer_.reset(); } } Thus after the footer is read and checked, the decompressor checks whether or not eof is reached. Obvisiously this isn't the case here - the decompressed chunk is just embedded in the file. Thus the decompressor restarts, but cannot find another header thus throwing an exception. Would it be reasonable to just insert a break? header_.reset(); footer_.reset(); + break; } } This would solve _my_ problem. Or is there another way to work around this issue? Best Olaf

boost serialize, exception "eaten" up...

Hi all, I'm trying to make a deserialization user cancellable, and I thought, hey, if I throw an exception in a progress handler (used when reading chars from input stream), that would propagate through the load hieararchy and I can catch it at top level... Nope... it gets caught in iostream (VS2012, row 776) :( , so the _CATCH_IO_END is probably a catch(...). Not very nice, and quite counter-productive if you ask me. Given a type T, I am trying to transform a type list into another containing the common type between T and the individual types in the type list. I create a Visual Studio 2013 update 1 VC++ Win32 Console Application project, and copy the example from boost_1_55_0\libs\geometry\doc\html\geometry\spatial_indexes\rtree_examples\quick_start.html to a file(delete all codes first), set Precompiled Headers to Not Using Precompiled Headers, then build. But build failed. I change the platform toolset from Visual Studio 2013 (v120) to Visual Studio 2010 (v100), then build successfully. Is it a bug ? [interprocess] Shared memory object

Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a performance or other difference between boost::interprocess::shared_memory_object and boost::interprocess::windows_shared_memory? With the version of boost we were using back in 2011 ( boost 1.48 ), we found that windows_shared_memory operated faster than shared_memory_object when transporting around 10MB of data. I've been looking at the various projects and the previous years project . I came across the boost.ublas project that was offered last year . This project seems very cool . Is the project going to be offered again ? The idea of adding additional protocols or modifying existing protocols sounds fun . There will be very likely a project proposal for the boost.ublas project, content will be very similar :) I would love to get a better feel about the entire boost project . Any pointers on how to do the same would be very helpful.

Build problems with 64-bit VC12 (MSVS2013)

Hi all, I am having trouble building Boost 1.55 for x64 using VC12. 32-bit builds without error, but 64-bit fails. All of the errors are boost/archive/iterators/transform_width.hpp(151) : error C2039: 'min' : is not a member of 'std' and repeats a lot I added #include <algorithm> to the beginning of the transform_width.hpp header file, and the build now completes without error. However, my app has two linker errors linking with libboost_system-vc120-mt-1_55.lib features.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::system_category(void)" (?system_category@system@boost@ @YAAEBVerror_category@12@XZ) referenced in function "public: __cdecl boost::system::error_code::error_code(void)" (??0error_code@system@boost@ @QEAA@XZ) features.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::generic_category(void)" (?generic_category@system@boost@ @YAAEBVerror_category@12@XZ) referenced in function "void __cdecl boost::system::`dynamic initializer for 'errno_ecat''(void)" (??__Eerrno_ecat@system@boost@@YAXXZ) Again, the 32 bit builds and links Ok. I'm thinking that as the problematic file in Boost in is an 'archive' directory, perhaps the wrong include file is being picked up? But I can't find the difference in 32/64 configurations to find the cause. Is this a known problem? Any suggestions how to diagnose or (preferably!) fix this? Many thanks Craig

I recently watched Stephen Lavavej's excellent channel9 video 'Core C++, 2 of n' in which he described a nice trick to stop template argument deduction: template <typename T> void (T t1, typename std::identity<T>::type t2) { } Browsing the internet for a similar problem, I recently discovered that Peter Dimov already described this trick in 2002 in 'Template function type inference with references' comp.lang.c++.moderated. Boost is more for the libraries, but could it also reserve some space for documenting these template tricks?

Hi, how can I get the path where b2 placed the binaries of boost tests? Problem is the following: some of the tests need the path to a shared library, which is built together with the tests. in the lib/mylib/tests/Jamfile.v2 I have the following: [...] # our test lib for shared library tests lib test_library : test_library.cpp ; test-suite mylib : # # shared library # [ run shared_library_load_test.cpp ] [ run shared_library_get_symbol_test.cpp ] # # [...] Inside shared_library_*_test.cpp I need something like this: boost::filesystem::path tstlib("bin.v2/libs/mylib/test/mycompiler/test_library.so"); As boost.build decides by itself where to put the binary, i cannot hardcode the path in the source-files.. Is there a way to get the path from boost.build? If not, how could I solve this problem? -- regards dib

Unit Tests and function calling

Hi, Just wanted a second opinion on how best to handle calling functions which invoke BOOST_REQUIRE and BOOST_CHECK type logic. For example, if I have a test like: void stuff( ... ) { BOOST_REQUIRE( ... ); BOOST_CHECK( ... ); } BOOST_AUTO_TEST( check_stuff ) { stuff( case1 ); stuff( case2 ); stuff( case3 ); } in the CLF log case at least, I only see which lines in stuff failed, but not which which case. I can change things so that we have: bool stuff( ... ) { bool result = true; if ( ( result = require-predicate ) == true ) result = check-predicate; return result; } BOOST_AUTO_TEST( check_stuff ) { BOOST_CHECK( stuff( case1 ) ); BOOST_CHECK( stuff( case2 ) ); BOOST_CHECK( stuff( case3 ) ); } but then I lose the info in the logs over which predicates are failing and it's generally a bit nasty :). Hi, I have two graphs and I want to know if they are isomorphic. I adjunct the graphs in .png. I read the documentation but i can't figure out how i must define the vertex invariant correctly. what I want is to consider that two graph are not isomorphic taking count of the vertices ids (the unsigned int value that they have). In the example i give I want the function isomorphism to return false. actually it return true. Fatal runtime error when using Boost in a native static library referenced by a mixed dll

I refactored a native C++ static library to use boost::thread and boost::asio instead of the Windows API. This static library is referenced by a C++/CLI dll built with the /clr switch; it acts as a wrapper for the managed upper layers to use. I use Boost inside native C++ dlls referenced by C++/CLI dlls and that works fine, but this particular scenario is a first. I suspect that Boost and C++/CLI don't play nice together, since I had to be careful to use the PIMPL idiom to avoid boost headers from being indirectly included in C++/CLI code. But now that I have to forcibly link a Boost lib with my C++/CLI dll, things have gone awry. Is this a supported usage for Boost? My environment: Boost 1.53.0, Visual Studio Professional 2012 Version 11.0.61030.00 Update 4, Windows 7 x64. The error is an EEFileLoadException in KernelBase.dll. It happens right after my C++/CLI dll is loaded into memory. Hi, Some compilers support r-value reference while not providing implicitly-defined move ctor/assign (e.g. VC10), is there a way to detect this defect? finite state filters controlled ...

Boost hi .. I'm using the finite state filter component in the iostreams library to create a state machine that can easily help me process incoming data streams from various medical sensors. I'm currently working around the following scenarios and wanted to run them by the list to see if the method I chose was the preferred one. 1- Constant datastream with no variation in datagrams. Solution: use finite state filters as they come, works ok ! 2- Variable datastreams with constant size in datagrams. Solution: use finite state filters with a transition table that can interpret anything and choosing in the processing function the right way to go, not very clean, but works !! 3- Variable datastreams with variable sizes. Solution: trying to change the finite state filter on the go, currently doesn't work. I noticed that when bytes are inserted into the state machine these don't get processed until a certain buffer size is met internally, resulting in a behaviour where data gets analyzed long after it has been inserted. I saw that the flush() function for the iostream that contains de state machine suffices when called before inserting a new character with a line such as: io::flush<io::filtering_ostream> ( this->data ); but the problem is that the only mechanism that can determine when a whole package has been received and one can change state machines to analyze a new state lies within the state machine itself (in the processing functions), I can't issue a flush() from within a state machine since it won't execute until a specific buffer size is met. Any ideas on how to go around this matter ?? I'm currently using boost 1.53 on Linux Thanks ...

I am using Boost.Units to try and compute the number of samples in a time interval, given the sample rate. What is the correct way to un-scale dimensionless quantities? I tried this: quantity<si::dimensionless,rational<unsigned>> unscaled(total); However, unscaled still has the same value. I also tried typedef make_scaled_unit<si::dimensionless, scale<10, static_rational<0> > >::type dimensionless_unit; quantity<dimensionless_unit,rational<unsigned>> unscaled(total); but this time, unscaled came out zero. Hello, I've learned about a "new" (or potentially new-to-boost-units, at any rate) dimension this week. TBD whether we'll be using boost or even units, but in the event we would, I'd like to add a slowness dimension. Basically it is the inverse of velocity: where velocity is time per length, slowness is length per time. Taking a gander at the velocity.hpp physical dimension, doesn't seem like a terribly hard thing to do, and with the new Git-module decomp, even less so today? Thank ye... As for a realistic motivating use case, think of a plugin manager. At any given time of its life an arbitrary heterogeneous set of objects are attached to it, and the it is the manager's job to manage the life time of the attached objects and return (a reference) to them when queried in a type-safe manner. Hi boost, I've encountered another VC 2013 problem. alt_sstream doesn't compile, since its base class std::basic_streambuf has an explicitely nonthrowing dtor. I actually had to fix it at two places: - virtual ~basic_altstringbuf() + virtual ~basic_altstringbuf() BOOST_NOEXCEPT_OR_NOTHROW and + virtual ~basic_oaltstringstream() BOOST_NOEXCEPT_OR_NOTHROW + { } Please, can anyone explain the second place: why doesn't the compiler-generated dtor inherit the nothrow clause? Is it due to the other base class (base_from_member< shared_ptr<...> >)? The weird thing is that MS even advocates the usage of boost.format with MSVC 2013: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh438469.aspx So I am not 100% sure, whether the problem is boost/MSVC-related or my configuration is wrong. Minimum perfect matching

Dear list, I am using boost graph and I need to solve a variant of the classic TSP. Boost providess a function (metric_tsp_approx) to get a Halmintonian cycle over a full connected metric weighted graph. However I need something slightly different. I need a path that visits all vertices starting and ending to two well known vertices (let be s and d). Seeking around, I found the suggestion of adding a node connected to s d and with the weight of the edge (s,d). The TSP solution of the new graph is the solution, just removing the new node. The problem is that now the graph is not complete anymore so the metric_tsp_approx's approach does not work anymore. Another possiblity is using a variant of Christofides algorithm, but one of the passages of that is the minimum weight perfect matching. I am a little confused by the documentation of the functions about Maximum Cardinality Matching(1), it is possible to use them to find the a maximum cardinality matching so that the total weight of all selected edges is minimal? Contrary to some of the things you said, I found a way to (partly?) implement my specific use case with boost::intrusive. However, I have some concerns: - I only tested a small part of the boost::intrusive functionality with my customizations, so my success might be superficial. Could you have a look and make an informed guess as to how stable this is? - I am concerned that further boost updates might inadvertently break my customizations, and I would hate to list =1.55 as a specific dependency (as opposed to >=1.55). I understand this can never be fully avoided, but I'm hoping you could decide to support my use case, either officially by including it in the code base and the docs, or at least non-officially by being aware of it. An A-handle is really an uint32_t offset into the array of type A objects. A B-handle is also an offset, but into another array, holding B objects. Thus: - The transformation handle-to-object_address is O(1). - The transformation object_address-to-handle is prohibitive. - I can only use A-handles for A objects stored in a unique A-object array. If I construct an A object elsewhere, I can refer to it with a raw pointer, but not with an A-handle. - Objects of type B are stored in a different array than objects of type A. This means, in particular, that handles are not freely re-interpretable as real/smart pointers are with casts. So, dereferencing the A handle 42 gives me the A object number 42 from the A object array; but dereferencing the same handle reinterpreted as a B handle gives me the object number 42 from the B object array. NOTE: These pointer casts are my primary source of concern. I will come back to this below. My goal is to make boost::implicit structures work with these handles instead of raw/smart pointers. Intuition tells me there isn't a serious reason why they shouldn't, and that this type of scenario is general enough to be of interest to others, and therefore to boost maintainers. From the point of view of the boost::intrusive data structures (e.g., list), I think these structures should never ever dereference any object they store. So, e.g. inside list.hpp, if we have somewhere an object val of type "reference" (such as in insert()), the code should never use "o.<field> = 42". Instead, whatever fields the data structure needs to access (like r/w access to parent pointers), they should access them through the traits class methods (e.g. traits::set_field(o,42)). However, this already seems to be the case today. From the POV of the traits classes, indeed, these need to dereference values. First of all, there is a problem with the function signatures. In http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/doc/html/intrusive/value_traits.html the signature of to_node_ptr should be changed from: static node_ptr to_node_ptr (value_type &value) to: static node_ptr to_node_ptr (pointer_traits<pointer>::reference value) This just involves changing the docs; you can change the signature (as I did in my customization) and it compiles just fine. Also, even with the right signature, the function should never do: { return value.get_node_ptr(); } but instead: { return (&value)->get_node_ptr(); } because both reference::operator& and pointer::operator-> are overloadable. However, the concern about traits classes is not as serious as the one about the data structures because users are given the option to write their own traits classes anyhow. So overall, I think the problem with the dot operator isn't serious enough to make this use case unattainable. > > A. Theoretically, as I described above, the containers themselves should never have to dereference specific fields anyhow, and therefore should be immune to reference type changes. The more serious concern, ***and the reason I wrote all this***, is with pointer casts. Unlike raw or smart pointers, these handles are type-specific. So casting them to something else and then dereferencing that object should be done with care. Take bstree, for instance. Its base class (bstbase3) inherits from node & Value_Traits. The way you obtain access to the Value_Traits struct (used with stateful traits) is through a pointer which you later want to dereference: typedef typename pointer_traits<node_ptr>::template rebind_pointer<const real_value_traits>::type const_real_value_traits_ptr; const_real_value_traits_ptr real_value_traits_ptr() const { return pointer_traits<const_real_value_traits_ptr>::pointer_to( this->get_real_value_traits()); } With handles, the only way I see for this to work is to eventually transform handles into real pointers. So, Ptr<T>::rebind::type should be U* except for U in {T, const T} and possibly {void, const void}. I initially tried to wrap voids as well, but I get errors. (Try adding -DWRAP_VOID when compiling test-i_list-orig.cpp) The problem are these casts: - In iiterator_members: const_void_pointer := pointer_traits<NodePtr>::rebind_pointer<const void> - In iiterator: void_pointer := pointer_traits<node_ptr>::rebind_pointer<void> - In list_iterator: const_real_value_traits_ptr := pointer_traits<void_pointer>::rebind_pointer<const real_value_traits> - iiterator_members ctor takes as 2nd argument a const_void_pointer - list_iterator ctor calls iiterator_members ctor, passing as 2nd arg a const_real_value_traits_ptr When I wrap voids: const_void_pointer := Ptr<const void> void_pointer := Ptr<const void> const_real_value_traits_ptr := value_traits* which means the container code is trying to cast: Ptr<T> -> value_traits* -> Ptr<const void> -> value_traits* -> deref, and the 2nd cast fails. However, things seemed to work ok if I don't wrap voids. So the main concern with my use case is that: ***intrusive containers should not cast node_ptr objects into other types of pointers (not even void*), and then attempt to cast them back***. They can cast other pointers (such as value_traits*) to void* and back, but not node_ptr-s. Please have this use case in mind when further developing boost::intrusive. unable to use find() function in boost::associative property maps.

Hi, The current boost::associative_property_map interface in boost::property_map does not provide a *find()* function interface from where we can find a key type from associative map. Although the associative property map concept was mainly developed for using boost::get and boost::put function efficiently on unique associative containers (such as std::map), it still does not have any interface for using find() function for searching whether an element exists in a map, My problem is explained below: I have a map, and I define a associative property map on it. as follows: std::map< int, int > *mymap*; boost::associative_property_map< std::map< int, int > > *my_asso_map* ( mymap ); I have a template function, named " exists_in " which checks whether a particular key_value, is present in the map or not. The function is as follows: *template* <typename map_t, typename key_t> bool *exists_in*(map_t map, key_t key) { return map.*find*(key) != map.end(); } ======================================== If I call this template function on mymap, it gives me no error: if( !exists_in ( mymap, key ) ----> no error Now, if I call template function on my_asso_map, it throws an error : if( !exists_in( my_asso_map, key ) ---->> error error: âclass boost::associative_property_map<std::map<int, int > >â has no member named âendâ error: âclass boost::associative_property_map<std::map<int, int > >â has no member named âfindâ I understand, my_asso_map just stores the address of mymap and provides get and put efficiently. But there are instances, where I have to *search* a key in my map. ( for example, if else loop as provided above ). I want to hide *mymap *and just expose *my_asso_map* to the user and everywhere I want to pass my_asso_map.. I am able to do this except for the *find*() function, because of which I had to keep passing my original *mymap *to the function/ functor and then use exists_in template function. Is there any way to implement a find() utility for associative property maps ? If find() interface can be added in library, that would be simply great ! The contents of boost_1_55_0.zip and boost_1_55.tar.bz2 are not consistent from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/boost/files/boost/1.55.0/ The tar.bz2 version compiles on linux, but the zip version does not. It complains about unknown modules when running b2. Rob Conde

How to compile boost with non-standard clang installations.

I am trying to build boost using clang. I know there are many sources of advice for doing this, but I can't seem to find a description of my exact system, and my attempts to adapt them have not been notably successful. Here are my configuration constraints: 1.) Clang is not the system compiler. It is compiled in installed in separately, with prefix $a/clang. So, $a/clang/bin/clang++ is the C++ compiler, and so forth. I am using the tip of the llvm/clang tree. 2.) I want to use libc++, which is installed in $a/clang/lib/libc++.so. I also want to use the libc++ abi, which is installed in $a/clang/lib/libcxxabi.so. 3.) The libc++ standard library include files are installed in $a/include/c++/v1. For most programs I compile with the options -nostdinc++ -isystem $a/clang/include/c++/v1 -std=c++11 and link with -stdlib=libc++ -L$a/clang/lib -lcxxabi This seems to work pretty well for most circumstances. However, I can't figure out how to translate this to boost 1.55.0. [property_tree] hex integer translator

I am using property_tree to parse some xml files provided by outside sources. Within those xml files, sometimes integers are represented as decimal, others are represented as hex. Below is an example line where a property named Index uses a hex representation. <Index>#x7000</Index> So I tried to read this as an integer, with the following source line, but that throws an exception since it does not now how to translate the hex format from the xml file. deviceList.second.get<int>("Index") So my question is: is there a translator already included in the property_tree <that I just cannot find>, or do I need to write my own translator to deal with hex integers. [container.string] why isn't memcpy used in the internals?

Hi! Recently I've been trying to improve the performance of a code that makes heavy use of std::string (lots of constructions and destructions). My first thought was to use boost::container::string as it does not use reference-counting and uses small-string optimization, so it should be a perfect replacement for std::string when it comes to performance. Right... But the problem is that switching to boost::container::string only made things worse in the general case. I wrote "in the general case" because when strings to be held are small and SSO may be applied then boost::container::string outperforms std::string considerably. However, in the general case constructing boost::container::string from a C string is significantly slower than constructing std::string. My investigation showed that std::string uses memcpy to copy the C string into its buffer while boost::container::string does not. The memcpy comes from std::char_traits::copy so maybe boost::container::string could use it too? I guess the rest of operations from std::char_traits (find, move, assign etc.) could be utilized too as std::char_traits has been carefully crafted with performance in mind. How to use graph properties

Dear list, I need to keep track of two special vertices in my graph, So I thought to attach two vertex_descriptor as graph properties so have easy access any moment. Properties work fine for edges or vertices, but I cannot make them work for the graph. In the bottom is the C++ code. The graph has the two properties, now how I cat get and put them? This code does not work and the error messages are impossible to read for me. Otherwise that is the way to keep graph-wise properties? The code compiles removing the two puts, so I assume the error is there. [MPL] implementing a "trait"?

I want to mark certain types as being of a category of my invention (e.g. is_pretty), for purposes of using enable_if in the same manner is standard type traits such as is_arithmetic etc. The trait will be false by default, and I'd declare something to nominate types that should be seen to have that trait. I want it to follow inheritance; if B has been declared to be in my category, and C is derived from B, then C will also be in that category without needing to do anything more (though some way to turn it _off_ would be available). Can someone advise me on an easy way to structure this? Thanks, —John

Hi, I am facing compilation error in the following code. I do understand why the error is, but I could not find a good solution. Here is my code and question explained in detail *What I want to do:* I want to store a key- value pair where both key and its respective values is unique. But After I create a map, I want to use the VALUE and get the corresponding key. Essentially the best way is a bimap. So I do the following using associative property maps. *What I did:* 1. define a bimap (my_bimap ) 2. define associative property map for left view of bimap ( right_asso_bimap ) 3. define associative property map for right view of bimap ( left_asso_bimap ) 4. fill the bimap using *left* view associative property map. i.e. *use boost::put( left_asso_bimap, key, value )* 5. Now using *right* view associative property map, retrieve key for given value i.e. use *boost::get( right_asso_bimap, value )* My main motive is to use GET and PUT helper functions for insertion and retrieval from a bimap. Use PUT to insert in LEFT BIMAP. and Use GET to retrieve from RIGHT BIMAP. I know the error is because of non-const-ness of the iterators because of which I cannot de-reference using iterators. But what would be the alternative to this ? interprocess library deadlocked

Hi everyone, I'm using boost interprocess, and in some cases I get the interprocess library deadlocked, now I'm using internal timed locks, so, I get timeout exception Fortunately it is not that frequent, but it is an issue I need to resolve before going live, When this happens the shared memory cannot be used at all, so it needs to be removed and a new one must be created. I'm not sure yet why these internal mutexes are getting locked and never unlocked, it may be happening with some process being killed unexpectedly. I was wanting to see if anybody has already figured out which approach is better for this case. Thanks a lot, Hernan

[Boost.Python] Wrapping a heterogeneous container

I have finally figured out how to (mostly) wrap a container of boost::variant<> in boost::python: http://blind.guru/boost_python-and-boost_variant.html The only problem left is the fact that I have to disable the use of reference semantics (proxies) in vector_indexing_suite. If I pass false for the NoProxy template parameter of vector_indexing_suite<>, I can no longer dereference container elements: >>> import bpv >>> bpv.make_vector()[0] Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> TypeError: No Python class registered for C++ class boost::variant<a, b, boost::detail::variant::void_, ...> However, I have a converter registered with to_python_converter<> that handles extracting the proper Python object from a variant. This works if NoProxy is true. However, if NoProxy is true, container elements do not have reference semantics, so in-place modifications will be lost. To me, it also looks like the TypeError raise above is sort of bogus, since I actually used to_python_converter to register conversion for this particular type. So I guess there are different types of registries involved, but the message does not indicate which registry is did refer to. Does anyone know if I can enable reference semantics for a heterogeneous container wrapped with indexing_suite? -- CYa, ⡍⠁⠗⠊⠕

Hi, I must apologise for the stupidity of this question - if I'd have surrounded the call with a try/catch block I'd have figured it out sooner, so it's my own bad coding. Now all I need to figure out is how to programmatically create a directory with admin rights to get around the permission denied exception when trying to create files/directories within /library/application support/ on the Mac. Newbie math question - roots of a distribution

Hi Boost list, I've just installed and started to use boost for various problems and I've hit on a math problem I'd like to solve with it but I'm unsure on how to achieve it. Let's define ans as 0.95, by finding the root of cdf(mydistribution, numbersuccesses) - 1, using a root finding algorithm, I should be able to get the value of successprob. I've tried reading the roots documentation and looking at some examples but they use simple functions like x * sin(x) - there is only one variable and it is x, the binomial cdf has quite a few variables - number of trials, number of successes, probability of a single success. How can I define a function with boost::math::binomial that could be used with boosts root libraries to find the probability of success from the cdf, given I know ans, the number of successes, and the number of trials? intrusive data structures with custom pointer class

Hi, I would like to use some boost::intrusive data structures (lists and trees) in a project I'm working on, but I ran into trouble trying to customize the existing classes to my needs. I decided to post my problem here, in case somebody knowledgeable of boost::intrusive *implementation details* can assist me. Thank you in advance. Background: In the project I'm working on, I need to manage a large number of objects in memory. The data is dynamic, so I need to be able to alloc&dealloc objects, in addition to keeping the objects in various lists&trees (for which I'm trying to use boost::intrusive). The RAM usage is large (think, >100GB), but the number of objects is smaller than 2^32. So one thing I'd like to do is to replace 8-byte raw pointers with 4-byte offsets into a deque. Doing this would solve the alloc/dealloc part. However, I now need to customize boost::intrusive containers to work with these 4-byte offsets instead of raw pointers. Initial solution that doesn't work: The most important limitation of these 4-byte indirect pointers (say to a type T) is that if you fully dereference one to T&, you can no longer reconstruct the indirect pointer (with operator&) in constant time. I.e. converting a real-pointer to indirect-pointer must be avoided. Thus, to make methods such as insert(T&) work, I had to roll out a reference-replacement class in addition to the pointer-replacement class. This is what I initially tried: - Given a type T, I rolled out pointer-replacement class Ptr<T> which holds a 4-byte int, and upon operator*, it produces a Ref<T> object. - A reference-replacement Ref<T> class similarly holds a 4-byte int, it implements operator& which produces the associated Ptr<T> object, and it also provides an operator T& () conversion which dereferences the object from the deque. - With these, I tried a custom traits struct looking like this: value_type = node := T node_ptr = pointer := Ptr<T> reference := Ref<T> Problems: Even though intrusive data structures are designed with the stated goal of leaving memory management to the user, intrusive lists&trees do allocate one extra node object that they use as "header". The code then takes the address (&) of this node and uses it in comparisons as a node_ptr. Because of this, my custom traits above could not compile. The only way I could find to make such containers work for my needs is basically a hack: define "node" to be a "pointer holder" object (neither member nor base of "value"), that allocates a "value" struct from the deque upon construction, that responds to operator& by returning the held pointer, and that otherwise acts as a value&. From what I could gather reading the docs, boost::intrusive containers allow some type of customization via the traits structs. However, I see some drawbacks: A. The traits classes seem to be there to support 2 existing customization types, namely the situation where "node" is a base class of "value" (implementing "base hooks") and the situation where "node" is a member of "value" (implementing "member hooks"). My situation represents a 3rd customization type. B. Even though the traits classes allow one to specify pointer types, it's possible (?) that under the hood the classes were designed to support only raw pointers and smart pointers, not the indirect offset-like pointers I need. Given A&B, it seems to me that in my customization I would need 2 different hacks. In the interest of code stability, I started wondering whether it is feasible to adapt existing boost::intrusive data to my needs (my first instinct) as opposed to simply rolling out my own rbtree. Questions: 0. Obviously: Have you seen a similar situation being dealt with before? Maybe there's an existing solution out there. My reluctance to rolling out my own intrusive rbtrees is due to the fact I'd have to test them, as opposed to using a known implementation. 1. Are boost::intrusive data structures supposed to support custom pointer classes (neither real pointers nor smart pointers)? For instance, in 1.46 I found this code in boost/intrusive/detail/tree_algorithms.hpp static node_ptr uncast(const_node_ptr ptr) { return node_ptr(const_cast<node*>( ::boost::intrusive::detail::boost_intrusive_get_pointer(ptr))); } So despite all the custom traits structs defining node_ptr and const_node_ptr, under the hood you have a line of code which assumes node_ptr can be constructed from node*. This is the expensive real-pointer to offset-pointer no-no I mentioned earlier. However, intrusive lists worked just fine in 1.46, which suggests this was simply a bug. 2. Can you point me to an example of defining and using custom pointer class with boost::intrusive? To enable compilation (of lists only) in 1.46, I had to customize std::iterator_traits (that part I understood), but then also boost::pointer_to_other and boost::intrusive::detail::smart_ptr_type. Even though the code compiled, I don't know what those are doing exactly, so I'm weary of them. 3. In 1.55, I have a few more pages of errors, I think mainly due to these pointer customization issues I don't fully understand. Something seems to have changed from 1.46 to 1.55. Is there a reference about what changed? Or is there a portable way of rolling out such a custom pointer class? Many thanks, M

BOOST Spirit Qi and lexer parsing of tokens

Hi, I am starting a project that will use spriti Qi and a lexer. I am having difficulty getting something simple to parse correctly without having to add states and just want to make sure I am going about it the right way. I have a label that should parse the following example (where the label starts/ends with a single quote): 'this is my BOOLEAN 123label 12as' And then this label will be followed by zero or more blanks and then a number enclosed in parenthesis: ( 123 ) There are a number of arbitrary blanks in between the number and the enclosing parenthesis. I am ignoring blanks and whitespace in the default state of the lexer (assume blanks and white spaces are defined in the patterns referenced): this->self += lex::token_def<>("{BLANK}")[ lex::_pass = lex::pass_flags::pass_ignore ]; this->self += lex::token_def<>("{WS}")[ lex::_pass = lex::pass_flags::pass_ignore ]; The first problem I encountered was that if I ignored blanks in the initial state and tried to parse a label that contains blanks that I don't want to ignore, this was not possible. So I had to create a label state, to which the blank token is added, and am switching to this state initially using in_state[...] so that when we are done with the label, we return to the initial state, where blanks are once again ignored. This worked. The problem then came with the digits. Since the digits were already recognized in the label state, I could not also recognize them in the initial state. So I added a digit state, where the digit token is now defined and the label state has to transition to this state while parsing between letter, symbols and digits (and whatever else I decide is allowed to make up my label), and after I get out of the label state, my rule parses a parenthesis, goes into the digit state, and then parses the closing parenthesis. This works correctly for what I need now. The issue I am having is looking ahead. What if a rule needs lower case letters only? I will have to create a state for it, remove it from the label state, etc. I will have to do this for any core patterns, which to me seems like there should be an easier way to do this. Any suggestions, comments, concerns? I have code snippets if my approach is not clear. Thanks for your help. Tony.

I should point out that I'm a blind programmer and I'm struggling to get Apple's VoiceOver utility to interact in a useful manner with Xcode 5's debugger and that's why I'm using a wxMessageBox to try and track down my failure. Hi, Due to the requirements of another library I have to use, I need to build Boost 1.55.0 on my Mac 10.8 system using the libstdc++ STL library, rather then libc++. I've now got myself royally confused with the build configuration process, as to where I specify toolsets and other options to achieve what I need. I'm failing with: Cd /users/tim/developer/libraries/boost_1_55_0 ./b2 clean sudo sh bootstrap.sh macosx-version=10.8 macosx-version-min=10.7 architecture=combined threading=multi link=static address-model=32_64 ./b2 toolset=clang -std=c++11 cxxflags="-stdlib=libstdc++" linkflags="-stdlib=libstdc++" I don't actually need the c++11 support. Hi, Using 1.55.0 in my Xcode project with clang as the compiler I'm getting: "/boost/type_traits/is_fundamental.hpp:26:20: fatal error: recursive template instantiation exceeded maximum depth of 128"::boost::is_arithmetic<T>::value This error is triggered by me including lexical_cast.hpp. Has anybody else encountered this and, if so, found a solution, please? [Move, Container] returning a move-only type

The definition of boost::container::vector includes: BOOST_COPYABLE_AND_MOVABLE rather than BOOST_MOVABLE_BUT_NOT_COPYABLE if the element type cannot be copied. If I have: typedef boost::container::vector<MyType> VecType; VecType foo() { ⋮ return boost::move(some_other_vec); } VecType x= foo(); On a configuration with BOOST_NO_RVALUE_REFERENCES defined, this gives an error within VecType's copy constructor, since MyType cannot be copied. If I write VecType x= boost::move(foo()); then I get an error that no matching move is viable, as the move(T&) wants an lvalue as the argument. I can't write the return type of foo to be rv<VecType> because that can't be copied (fake move-out like auto_pointer) either; the members are declared private and never defined. I'm thinking that if VecType were BOOST_MOVABLE_BUT_NOT_COPYABLE then it would work as expected, since operator rv<VecType>& would be provided. How can I make this work without surgery on the Boost headers, and hopefully without something ugly like deriving from vector and having to re-define and forward all the various constructors and such? —John

[Range, Container] range of to-be-moved values ?

Given a boost::container::vector<C> vec; I can write vec.push_back(move(value)) for a move-only (non-copyable) type C, instead of vec.push_back(value) as usual. But what would I write instead of vec.insert(pos,b,e) where (b,e] is a range of values? I'm particularly fond of Range concept, rather than loose iterators, so my function would be something that takes something that works as a Range; e.g. template <typename R> void prepend (const R& src_range) { auto b= boost::begin(src_range); auto e= boost::end(src_range); vec.insert(vec.begin(), b, e); } An rvalue reference to a range is not the same thing as a range of values that I may move from. I could have a differently named function and pass it a range with the implicit assumption that the function will modify the values, but is there a proper way to indicate that as part of the type? src_range can be, say, a pair of (non-const) iterator s as opposed to a pair of const_iterator s, or otherwise range_iterator<R>::type is dereferencable to a const value or not. But that itself is hard to see in general let alone overload against! If my function were called prepend_and_destroy_original(src) it might clue in the caller, but in general it is surprising that a parameter of (const R&) will modify the values. src itself doesn't change, and now refers to the same range of values which are now swapped out with defaults. With built-in pointers and even shared_ptr I can distinguish between an in-out parameter and a parameter that dereferences to a modifiable or const value. But what about with Ranges? Even with lower-case ranges provided by two iterators, How can you call something like boost::container::vector v2 (InIt_start, InIt_end); to convert a std::vector or some other container of move-only items? Only if the types match exactly can the vector(vector&&) constructor be used. —John

[iostreams] Why does boost::iostreams::copy close the Sink & Source?

What's the rationale behind this decision? I don't find it intuitive and reduces the utility of the function. In my case I read from a file into a stream which I want to later use, the signature of the device is important. boost::python wrapping a container of boost::variant?

Hi. Does anyone have ideas how to convince boost::python to wrap a container of boost::variant? I need this to generate useful python bindings for a project of mine which uses boost::variant internally. Since python supports heterogenous containers natively, it seems to me this should be doable. However, I have attempted to find a solution on my own on several occasions, and always failed. One obvious hint is the indexing_suite. However, now that I looked at it again, I think I know where the problem is: The get_item method of indexing_suite always returns a data_type object, which is value_type from the container in question. However, from what I can see, I'd need something that converts to boost::python::object, so that I can return whatever class is appropriate for the actual variant instance. In other words, get_item would need to return a boost::python::object instead of data_type. To illustrate in code what I want, here is a minimal example: #include <boost/python.hpp> #include <boost/variant.hpp> struct a { int x; }; struct b { double y; }; typedef boost::variant<a, b> variant; typedef std::vector<variant> vector; BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(bpv) { using namespace boost::python; class_<a>("a", init<a>()) .def(init<>()) .def_readonly("x", &a::x); class_("b", init()) .def(init<>()) .def_readonly("y", &b::y); } The question is, how do I expose std::vector<variant> to Python? inter thread communication with message queues

I was reading about message queues with respect to inter thread communication, and I have a specific use case that I want to describe. It's rather complex, so I want to be careful that I design it so that there are no race conditions. Pool A is a buffer (of type 1) handle manager, that feeds buffer handles into thread set 1, and receives old handles from thread set 2. There is only one thread running pool A. Thread set 1 is a set of N threads that fill up buffers of type 1 with regular data. It pushes full buffers to thread set 2. Thread set 2 is a set of M threads that compress buffers of type 1 into data buffers of type 2. Once the buffer of type 1 has be used up, it is cleared and sent back to Pool A. It pulls fresh data buffers of type 2 from Pool B, and sends freshly filled compressed buffers to Pool C. Pool C does something with the buffer, clears it and hands it to Pool B. [accumulators] "count" NaN but otherwise ignore it?

Is there a feature within accumulators to count NaNs on extraction but to otherwise ignore them? Maybe some sort of pass filter on incoming data? I've got a situation where I'd like to avoid NaNs clobbering otherwise useful information, but I still want to total count of data seen to include them. The context is a time integrator for a physics simulation. The integrator tracks the number of timesteps. When the physics kicks back a NaN (because something's amiss), I'd like to count the failed timestep but not have the NaN destroy the useful mean of timesteps taken thus far. Thanks, Rhys

Avoid transitive link dependency

I wrote a serial port static library using boost::asio. I'm trying to use this library from another project I'm building as a dll, but this second project fails to link: it wants to link with Boost's sytem library. I used PIMPL to remove all boost #includes from my class header, and also tried setting Visual Studio's Link Library Dependencies option set to Yes in my static library. Neither approach worked. I know I can solve this by adding the boost binary directory to the library directories for my dll project, but I'd like to avoid that. The way I see it, only my static library should have a Boost link dependency. I'm using Visual Studio 2012, targetting to Windows XP (v110_xp toolset), and Boost 1.53.0. [Container] any debug renderings for Visual Studio?

When I try to inspect, say, a flat_vector (or anything built on top of it like a flat_map) I can't see the elements in the Watch display. Is there some way to teach VS about that? I seem to remember a long time ago having VS skip things like shared_ptr dereference when stepping through.
