boost/libs/test/example/external_main_example_1.cpp provides an example of a dynamical test suite tree. The invocation of add( BOOST_TEST_CASE(boost::bind(&free_test_function, 1, 1))); results in unpleasant names like "boost::bind( &free_test_function, 1, 2 )" . I used the preprocessor output to override the 2nd arg to make_test_case with a name of my choosing: ts->add(boost::unit_test::make_test_case (boost::unit_test::callback0<> (boost::bind( &free_test_function, 1, 2)), boost::unit_test::const_string( minor, 1))); This works (pretty names and invocable with the logical run_test) but I have no particular confidence that this will survive version changes as well as would BOOST_TEST_CASE. Is there a better way to do this? Classification: Honeywell Internal All serialized classes have BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_IMPLEMENT(fully_qualified_class_name) in the .cpp file (at the end of file) BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_KEY(fully_qualified_class_name) in the .hpp file outside of all namespaces (at the end of file) In addition, I have a static template (templated on Archive type) method that calls ar.register_type for all serialized library classes. This method is called for both the output and the input archive before any serialization is done. This insures that all the library classes are registered with the archive in the same order. I do not attempt to register classes that I have not defined (e.g. std::string, ...). I do include the serialization headers for these types. (e.g. <boost/serialization/string.hpp>,...) I found that just using the macros was insufficient. In that case, the proper serialize methods were not called by the deserializing application (serialization worked fine). Adding the call that registers the library classes on both the input and output archives results in the proper serialize methods being called on both serialization and deserialization. However, even with this, the fields in the instance after deserialization have only default values. I did not detect any serialization exceptions during either serialization or deserialization. Note that I get the same behavior if I use manually created default constructors (AFAICT all my default constructors initialize all members to something). I do not get any uninitialized data exceptions. --- Steve H. I'm using Boost.Serialization (v 1.55) on a 64 bit Win7 machine using VS 2012. I'm building the library containing all the classes to be serialized as a DLL. None of the classes have manually defined constructors (so I'm getting the compiler created constructors). All serialization is done through pointers. Most of the classes for a single class hierarchy of up to 5 inheritance levels, although there is a second class hierarchy with only 2 levels and a number of classes that do not use inheritance. When running tests where the same EXE serializes then deserializes everything works (I'm serializing to/from XML, text and binary). When running tests where I serialize in one EXE then deserialize in another EXE, (using text archives on both sides) the serialization works fine and the deserialization appears to work fine (all the appropriate deserialize methods are called), but the resulting object contains none of the data. The data is arriving at the receiving/deserializing application as a string which is then placed in a stringstream and that is used to initialize a text_iarchive. The serialize methods use BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP since this is set up to handle XML as well. [test]Legacy support - Boost 1.34.1 with MSVC 6

I've just started trying to use Boost's Test module. Trouble is I'm still stuck with Visual Studio 6(SP6), so I believe I need to stick with Boost 1.34.1 as the last properly supported for VC6. I'm having trouble getting the examples even to compile (ie exec_mon_example.cpp). Does anyone have any pointers to known incompatibilities between Boost 1.34.1 and VC6SP6 ? Or whether there is a more recent version where the Test module will work with VC6 ? I am well aware of how old VC6 is and would like to move forward. The major aim of getting Boost.Test working with VC6 is to give some confidence that any port to VC12 is working satisfactorily. Regards, Richard. Hello, I'm trying to make a macro for the following case (essentially, I have to translate a run-time decision to a compile-time one): switch(i) { case 1: my_func(arg, offsetof(my_struct, arr[1].my_field))); break; case 2: my_func(arg, offsetof(my_struct, arr[2].my_field))); break; // etc. up to 10 } If I could hard-code the whole function call into the macro, I could do something like this: #define EXPR(unused, x, text) my_func(arg, offsetof(my_struct, arr[x].my_field))); break; #define MY_MACRO(x) \ switch(x)\ {\ BOOST_PP_REPEAT(x, EXPR, _)\ } However, I'd like to pass "arg" and "my_field" as parameters to this macro. PropertyTree-JSON parser incompatible with Boost.ASIO?

Hello folks, as this is my first post on this list, I am apologizing for mistakes I maybe made in advance. Anyway, to my question: For my current project I need both, Boost.PropertyTree (and it's JSON parser), as well as Boost.ASIO. When including both headers, it gives me an error at boost/asio/detail/socket_types.hpp(24), saying that WinSock.h has already been included. However, if I comment out the include for json_parser.hpp, it does not give any compiler errors (except the non-exisiting function read_json). I am working under Visual Studio 2013 Professional on Windows Server 2012 R2, boost 1.55. Using Program Options styles to format options_description output

One of the things I want to do when I use Program Options is to print the help according to the styles I am enforcing. For example, on Windows if I use allows_slash_for_short, it will make sense for me to reflect that when I print the actual help string. I can't find a way to do this. Any pointers? Thanks, Arindam

This is the last weekend of the the review of the Convert library, which started Monday May 12 and goes through Sunday May 25. For those who have been to C++ Now please take a look at the library and review it. I am looking for at least a half dozen reviews before I can decide, based on the reviews, whether or not the library should be accepted into Boost. The Convert library builds on the boost::lexical_cast original design and experience and takes those conversion/transformation-related ideas further. * to be applicable to a wider range of conversion-related use-cases, * to provide a more flexible, extendible and configurable type-conversion framework. The Convert library can be cloned from GitHub at https://github.com/yet-another-user/boost.convert. The library follows the modular-boost format. Just clone it to modular-boost/libs in the 'convert' subdirectory and run 'b2 headers' in order to create a link to its header file directory in the modular-boost/boost subdirectory. The library comes with documentation in its top-level index.html or doc/html/index.html file. Robert – Thanks for your comments! 1) It was a typo – I got input archives and output archives backwards when describing the problem in my original email. I was actually using the as you describe. 2) There were several inline constructors in some derived classes not used by serialization. I removed them. 3) The archives were being closed but not the streams. Now both output archive and output stream are closed before the input stream and archive are created. 4) I also set up all the serialization code using NVPs so I could debug using XML archives based on a comment I saw in another post of yours from 6/15/10. That really makes it a lot easier to understand what’s happening! 5) I rebuilt Boost with the ODR code enabled. Results: I saw no ODR problems with the compile (by the time I did a full compile, I’d done steps 1-4). I saw none of the link warnings when rebuilding the DLL. I’m having much better success with the DLL now. It works almost completely. I’m now only having an RTTI issue that I’m working to resolve. I may post separately about that if my next few tests don’t identify the problem. PS –I’ve gotten pretty familiar with some parts the serialization code as I’ve stepped through it with the debugger. Very cool! It’s a real education on template meta-programming. [Asio] deadline_timer doesn't fire in some cases

We have a client application that uses deadline_timers in order to implement timeouts for read and write operations on a socket. We have an io_service thread that runs boost::asio::io_service::run. The _ioService is used by resolver, by read, write, connect timers (implemented using deadline_timer) and also by tcp::socket. On socket we are using only synchronous operations like: connect, read_some, write_some. The socket is blocking. Also for resolver we are using the synchronous operation resolve. Our problem is that although read timer is set to 100 milliseconds, it doesn't fire up and the application is blocked in read_some function for like 15 minutes. In onReadTimeout callback we are closing the socket. I can reproduce this behavior every time by changing the connection settings on the virtual machine that host the server to a dummy interface. Currently I sow this behavior in logs and i did a core dump of the client process using gcore and sow the stack trace on all threads. I added also the stack trace. The thread that is blocked for 15 minutes is thread 18. This thread contain in stack trace boost::asio::io_service::run. Also thread 9 and thread 10 contains boost::asio::io_service::run. Thread 18 calls _readTimer.expires_from_now(boost::posix_time::milliseconds(_readTimeout), ec); _readTimer.async_wait(boost::bind(&BlockingTcpClient::onReadTimeout, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error)); with readTimeout set to 100 and then _pSocket->write_some. In BlockingTcpClient::onReadTimeout we are closing the socket. So read_some should be blocked for maximum 100 miliseconds. Maybe the problem is that the read timer uses the same io_service that currently is blocked in read_some. Can anyone help us to investigate or fix this issue? If this is a known limitation can anyone tell us why this behavior happen? Thank you!

[RegEx] Are there any tools to test a regular expression will work

Specifically Boost "Perl Regular Expression Syntax" option (with or without Unicode enhancements) I am working with software a product that is using Boost regex engine but I need a way to test individual regex expressions before committing them in to it. But I have found there are operstors that I sometimes need to use that do not exist in any on-line or client-side regex tester/editor or IDE that I have tried. They all seem to be based on Java or .Net based regex engines and I can not find any that uses the Boost engine. Tried RegExPal, RegEx.Powertoy, NotePad++, Padre etc. I don't mind whether it is online, Windows based, Linux based (so long as easy to install) or part of a larger application (so long as not massive). I just want something that will take a few seconds to tell if a regular expression will match a particular text. Dear all, I need to construct (and use) a graph that can handle millions of nodes, with minimal overhead, and as suggested I am using a CSR graph. As I understand from the documentation, it is unmodifiable. Arcs are created at runtime in a parallel fashion, and my choice was to use a vector of std::tuple<std::size_t, std::size_t, int> (that is, node, node, weight) with Intel's TBB. This is the problem: can I avoid temporary vectors to construct my graph? Right now the only way I see is to create the vector of arcs (as std::pair) and the vector of weights, but this is a waste of time and memory. Do you have any helpful suggestions? Cheers & Thanks!

That is wrong - the executable will *not* execute static code unless it is reachable via main. When I build the library containing the class hierarchy as a static library, I can serialize and deserialize consistently instances of any of the classes in the hierarchy multiple times. When I build the same library as a DLL, serialization/ deserialization works for some of the classes but fails consistently when deserializing one of the derived classes. I've checked the following things: 1) All of the data fields of the instances are initialized. They are fundamental types (bool, int, long), std::string, a std::chrono (which has a serialization I found on the 'Net) and one enumerated type (removing the enumerated type doesn't fix the problem). 2) The serialize code is in the .cpp files (not headers) along with the instantiations for the archive I use so I don't have multiple instantiations of the serialize methods 3) The test driver does nothing but run the tests - so the DLL containing the library shouldn't be loaded multiple times. 4) The output archive is closed before I open the input archive, so there shouldn't be characters missing at the end of the stringstream. 5) I'm building UNICODE for both the library and the test driver, so character size shouldn't be changing. I know is that the Microsoft compiler does create an executable that will execute static code that is not reachable via main. I have not (to my knowledge) included static code that is unreachable via main, but I haven't delved into the Serialization EXPORT macros to see what exactly they are doing. I don't know if that is a source of the problem. When I build the library, I do get linker warnings (see examples at bottom) that I'm importing locally defined symbols. Since all of the classes in the library must be visible externally because they are used externally, they must all be exported. Since they are part of a class hierarchy, they must be available to the other classes in the library that derive from them. I don't know if these warnings point to the problem. I also don't know how to get rid of them given the above. My question is: Why is this happening? How do I fix it? Other notes: all of the library classes have "DECL" macros that resolve to __declspec(dllexport) or __declspec(dllimport) when building the dll. They are fundamental types (bool, int, long), std::string, a std::chrono (which has a serialization I found on the 'Net) and one enumerated type (removing the enumerated type doesn't fix the problem). 2) The serialize code is in the .cpp files (not headers) along with the instantiations for the archive I use so I don't have multiple instantiations of the serialize methods 3) The test driver does nothing but run the tests - so the DLL containing the library shouldn't be loaded multiple times. 4) The output archive is closed before I open the input archive, so there shouldn't be characters missing at the end of the stringstream. 5) I'm building UNICODE for both the library and the test driver, so character size shouldn't be changing. I know is that the Microsoft compiler does create an executable that will execute static code that is not reachable via main. I have not (to my knowledge) included static code that is unreachable via main, but I haven't delved into the Serialization EXPORT macros to see what exactly they are doing. I don't know if that is a source of the problem. When I build the library, I do get linker warnings (see examples at bottom) that I'm importing locally defined symbols. Since all of the classes in the library must be visible externally because they are used externally, they must all be exported. Since they are part of a class hierarchy, they must be available to the other classes in the library that derive from them. I don't know if these warnings point to the problem. I also don't know how to get rid of them given the above. My question is: Why is this happening? How do I fix it? Other notes: all of the library classes have "DECL" macros that resolve to __declspec(dllexport) or __declspec(dllimport) when building the dll. When I build the static library, these resolve to "" (nothing). I'm attaching copies of relevant files. All files named "Raw*Event" are part of the library. MinimalTest.cpp is the test driver. Chrono.hpp is the serialization header that is not part of the Boost serialization library. boost::throw_exception(...) behaviour and use case

I was wondering what behaviour or idiom does boost::throw_exception enable. I must be dense but the documentation here (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/exception/doc/throw_exception.html) does not immediately ring a bell. Is it meant to somehow help write code that runs both in environments where exceptions are enabled and where they are not? Since the structure of code that does not use exception handling tends to be quite different from that which does, I was wondering what's a correct idiomatic use of Boost. [Xpressive] Placeholder for user defined assertion

I am trying to use a placeholder object for the check function in an xpressive regex. The error I usually get is "error C2064: term does not evaluate to a function taking 1 arguments" Please see my example below that uses the three_or_six user-defined assertion as described at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_51_0/doc/html/xpressive/user_s_guide.html#b…. I am using boost 1.51 and Visual Studio 2010 Express. This is a contrived example; the real reason I am trying to do this is because my assertion has state that is not known at the time the regex is compiled. In the interim I have worked around it by using static variables instead of placeholders but that makes for more brittle code than I would like. Also, is there any way to reuse the match_results objects that are created by the iterator syntax? The API was first presented at the C++Now 2014 conference. Based on the positive feedback and encouragement I received during the talk, I've decided to make the implementation generally available. Graph Library Question

Hi, I was able to find the shortest distances between my starting node and the rest of the nodes. Now I would like to output the path between my starting node and destination node. I have tried a number of different examples but none of them seem to do what I want. I am pretty sure I need to use some type of get but I can not find it in the documentation. Thanks for any help.

Is there any that you could build three separate vectors for the different components? That would allow the storage from two of the vectors to be reused as-is in the CSR graph. Compiling with Python 3.3.5?

Greetings. I am compiling Boost 1.54.0 from source on a Debian 7.0.0 system built on a virtual machine. When that system has Python 3.1.5, Boost compiles. However, for a different program on that system, I need a newer Python. I started a new VM, installed Python 3.3.5 instead of 3.1.5, and tried to build Boost the same way. [Test] Boost.Test for Property Tree Issue

Boost version: 1.55.0 OS: Windows 8 IDE: Visual Studio 2010 I have a small class which just parses a std::string using boost::property_tree::read_json. I'm trying to test my method with invalid input to make sure my method handles the exception. However, when I execute GetPropertyTreeFromJsonInValidInput2 (source code in attachment), I get exception in the visual studio itself and I have to break the execution. (snapshot is included in attachment). I'm a new user of boost, so don't know where to look for the solution.

What is the best way to obtain a constant one for any numeric type?

Is there any trait in Boost that allows me to get the value of one for any numeric type? What I'm looking for is something that would work like the following: boost::numeric_traits<int>::one; // 1 boost::numeric_traits<long>::one; // 1L boost::numeric_traits<double>::one; // 1.0 boost::numeric_traits<float>::one; // 1.0f And so on. Does it exist, or something equivalent? I've looked into NumericConversion, but I haven't quite found something similar. What I'm using now is something equivalent to the following: template<class Number> Number one() { return Number(1); } Maybe this is safe enough? A program I wrote using the Boost serialization library trips up when communicating with instances of itself on hosts with different versions of the library. terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::archive::archive_exception' what(): unsupported version It's not reasonable to require that users of my software upgrade their hosts in lock step with each other, all at once or not at all. But library skew on the order of a bit over two years at least (consider users of Ubuntu LTS) arises naturally and quite often. I think the solution would be for boost serialize to offer an API point that says "write with binary protocol n", which leaves the library free to read with any protocol it knows. When I feel that n+1 has existed for long enough, I can tell my program to use n+1. Unfortunately, and I'd like to be shown wrong, I don't think the library provides such an API point. [ASIO] Multicast Regression?

I previously used ASIO from Boost 1.49 to send out multicast UDP messages up to 64K bytes in size without a problem. Now with ASIO from Boost 1.55 I can't seem to send out a multicast UDP message greater than 1500 bytes. I get this error: Code=1784 Category=system Message=The supplied user buffer is not valid for the requested operation I've looked at the code between Boost 1.49 and 1.55, (basic_datagram_socket.hpp, datagram_socket_services.hpp, win_iocp_socket_service_base.hpp and ipp) and very little has changed. Am I missing something that changed between the two? I'm using Windows and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 for both 1.49 and 1.55. Hopefully someone has an idea of where to look. Dear all, I need to find the shortest path from a node to another, and this operation will be performed several times with different source/destination nodes. In many cases, I would need the same source, so I was thinking about caching the results from Dijkstra. Sincerely, I don't know what I should cache. My initial thought is creating a hashmap with key being the source node, and value something that allows me to easily retrieve the path. What do you think I need to cache? Does it suffices to have a map from node index (std::size_t) to the node's predecessor map? Thanks & Cheers!

[boost] [mpl] Hard upper limit for range_c

I was testing for_each and range_c and I've discovered that there's a hard limit in the range_c template. I'm attaching an example (copied from the for_each docs http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/mpl/doc/refmanual/for-each.html) to illustrate it. This program compiles fine for me (g++ 4.9.0), but if I set NUM to a number over 890, the compilation fails. I receive an error about template instantiation depth, so I guess I could tune it in the compiler to make it work. But, anyway, why is this template recursively defined? Is it on purpose? I get that maybe range_c was intended just for small ranges, but, is it the only way it can work? Also, it only allows for statically defined range limits. Also, whenever it compiles, the bigger the number you put, the longer it takes to compile. Thanks. -- Javier Dehesa

DateTime library - how to count "working days"?

I need to find a day that stands 30 working days from a specific date, ignoring holidays. Boost.Log - textual format with severity

Hello! I'm new to boost log (like many others, I imagine since it's only a relatively new library). I'm trying to specify a format textually (eg, keywords::format = "blahblah", instead of using a compiled expression). The idea is that the format can be reconfigured easily either through a command line parameter or through the configuration file without needing to recompile. However, it seems that anything specifying %Severity% when using a custom severity_level enum will simply not be output at all. Take the example from libs/log/example/keywords/main.cpp Simply changing line 86 to be: logging::add_console_log(std::clog, keywords::format = "%Severity% %TimeStamp%: %_%"); will exhibit the problem I believe I am trying to resolve. My suspicion is that the core doesn't know about the custom Severity attribute because it hasn't been registered and so is unable to parse %Severity% to any formatter. In contrast, the add_file_log below that does correctly output the severity level because it uses a compiled expression and is therefore able to deduce what needs to be done (am I correct in that assumption)? I seem to be unable to add an attribute to resolve this without rolling my own attribute class. How do I add an attribute or formatter related to the Severity which was declared with BOOST_LOG_ATTRIBUTE_KEYWORD? I think it's worth noting that if I remove the template parameter to severity_logger on line 123 so that it matches thus: src::severity_logger< > slg; It then devolves into a standard int instead of an enum and the output is "correctly" seen -- as an int and not as a human-readable string. While this is okay for now, I would of course want it to be human-readable if possible. Hello Boosters, Where I work we are implementing an open source, modern, CORBA implementation and IDL mapping. We want it to support C++ and C++11 IDL mapping, but we also want to create another IDL mapping. This new IDL mapping is being experimentated in the following url https://github.com/expertisesolutions/mORBid/tree/concepts It still has some very problematic issues (like compilation-time of generated code) and of course it is still far from completion. But, we would like to hear suggestions about this approach. What we did was that an IDL interface is mapped to a typedef for boost::type_erasure (I found the idea quite cool for the reasons that I'll mention below) with the requirements defined in the IDL, e.g. its operations. The IDL also emits a model for this type_erasure which is the actual stub class and is called remote_reference. It also emits a proxy_reference model for the same type_erasure typedef which receives a std::reference_wrapper and proxies the calls, this is needed because type_erasure can't switch between by-reference and by-value in runtime. Why I believe this approach is better than current IDL to C++11 mapping: Because the IDL to C++11 mapping is too intrusive. You can't really use normal classes you have written for use as servants in CORBA because you have to inherit from Skeletons classes *and* you have to use the *exact* same signature as defined in the mapping. This is *way too restricted*. This is also inerent to the OO paradigm that CORBA uses. But, we can mimic the same features using type-erasure instead of directly using dynamic polymorphism. This gives a much greater freedom to users. It might be that Boost.type_erasure is not the best tool here because of compile-time and compiler memory usage, but the idea surely is. We still haven't seriously profiled boost.type_erasure yet, but we will do so as soon as possible. I think it might be very interesting to experiment with lite concepts and Boost.concept_check as well. Also, we created a EDSL for GIOP and IIOP mapping based on the boost.spirit infrastructure. We use that to treat alignment and endianness automatically and to use the same grammar for generation and parsing of IIOP messages. The message header grammar is defined like this: start = "GIOP" & octet('\1') /* GIOP major version */ & octet('\0') /* GIOP minor version */ & endianness [ octet(MessageType) /* message_type */ & raw_size(ulong_)[body] ] ; Which is compiled to IIOP parser or generator through boost.spirit infrastructure of make_terminal, make_directive and etc. This works splendid well and is really easy to use, extend, is statically checked and has great performance. boost 1.55 build / install on OSX - why are aliases used instead of symlinks?

I recently installed and built boost 1.55 on an OSX machine of mine. With my current make system for my app (qmake) I needed to specify where the lib and include directories for boost were and thought the best thing to do would be to set them to \usr\local\lib \usr\local\include where I can see in the lib case there are links to the various library modules and in the include case there is a link to the boost include directories. The problem is that the boost installation makes these links using aliases instead of symlinks, so everything appears fine browsing in the Finder, but at the command line, the compiler can't see these directories. I'm able to change the aliases to symlinks, or point to the actual boost directories (e.g. \usr\local\Cellar\boost\1.55.0_1\*) and everything works, but it seems like the intention was to have symlinks at \usr\local\lib and \usr\local\include so that one can just point to these places and be version agnostic? Boost TTI has very convenient macros for checking if a type has a member function. See http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/tti/doc/html/the_type_traits_intr… If I have not missing something BOOST_TTI_HAS_MEMBER_FUNCTION returns false for inherited member functions. Is there a convenient Boost solution for doing this? There is a SO<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1966362/sfinae-to-check-for-inherited-me…> solution based on SFINAE. But I would like to avoid that and would prefer a Boost solution, since that way I am more sure it works on more compilers and I want avoid maintaining code for each such specific behavior.

I'm trying to use boost tti has_member_function to test if a user-specified allocator has the expected methods. However, using "-E" and grep-ing for "\<deallocate\>", I see this signature: void deallocate(pointer __p, size_type) Shouldn't I be getting a 1? Am I using it the wrong way? Thanks

[Asio] async_read_until is passing no error and bytes_transferred of zero to handler

I wanted to ask on the mailing list about an issue I'm having with Boost.Asio on Windows 7 before making a bug report. System information: Windows 7 64-bit Professional running on an Intel quad-core i7 with 4 GB of RAM, using Visual Studio 2012 for C++ development. Used VS2012 compiler to compile Boost 1.55 libraries by following instructions found in the documentation online. In case it matters, here are the C++ preprocessor defines I'm using: WIN32;_DEBUG;_CRT_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS;NOMINMAX;WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN; _WIN32_WINNT=0x0601; The project was compiled with the default debug settings for Visual Studio 2012, meaning no optimizations. The problem: While using Boost.Asio to communicate with a serial device (an Arduino, 250000 baud, 8n1), sometimes async_read_until would pass to the handler both a bytes_transferred of zero and an error condition indicating success. According to http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/doc/html/boost_asio/reference/ async_read_until/overload1.html, this should never occur (if I'm interpreting the documentation correctly). Specifically, under parameters, under handler: // The number of bytes in the streambuf's get // area up to and including the delimiter. // 0 if an error occurred. The odd thing about this problem is that it is not easily reproducible... I think it may be a race condition. The files I'm attaching include the wrapper class I made to access the serial port in Windows, with a small main function at the bottom of the implementation .cpp file. I almost couldn't reproduce the error with this setup-- it took me a few dozen runs to get it to manifest itself. I can guarantee that the problem does not lie with the Arduino or the UART communication-- I have been running USBPcap to make sure that USB communication is taking place. I can see all data travelling to and from the Arduino by analyzing the USBPcap output through Wireshark. The Arduino I have has a set of ASCII serial commands it supports. The only one I use in the included code is "?\r", which makes it return "ACK\r\nArduino\r\n". Based on my searching, the closest bugs to what I'm experiencing seem to be these ones: https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/8933 https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/8967 I considered disabling IOCP for testing, but serial port communication depends on IOCP in Windows. The original problem is far more reliably reproduced-- using Visual Studio's unit testing framework, I am running essentially the same code included in the main function of the included code. I'd say about one of every three or two runs results in the error using the unit testing framework. Running the code in the actual application I'm developing also reliably reproduces the problem (MFC application). The attached .zip file includes the stripped down version of the project used to reproduce the problem, the stack frame of the error as caught by the assert inside readUntilComplete, and a core dump with the heap for the stripped project when the error occurred. The debugging symbols for the core dump are also included in the top-most directory of the .zip file. I would greatly appreciate any input/suggestions on the issue. If people are having trouble reproducing the problem, I seemingly can occasionally reproduce it so I can do more analysis, if someone were to point me in the right direction. Thank you for your time! Hi, this is my first post. I'm experimenting with boost 1.55.0 having last used version 1.3.mumble. I'm porting some old classes to see what changes there are and it has been quite smooth, with spirit stuff coming over easily using the classic namespace. One of my old wrapper classes typedefs boost::detail::thread::scoped_lock<boost::recursive_mutex> which seems to be missing from the latest version. Replaced with boost::mutex::scoped_lock perhaps? I expect to find other changes i thread... Can anyone point me to an explanation of changes to Boost thread that would help smooth this transition. Boost pool and move constructor

I am trying to create a object using boost object_pool, but trying to use the move constructor of the desired object, but on Visual 2013, I am always getting: error C2664: 'MyObject::MyObject(const MyObject &)' : cannot convert argument 1 from 'MyObject (__cdecl &)(void)' to 'MyObject &&' The error happens because boost pool construct method always assume a const parameter. [range] can't use boost::any_range with RTTI disabled due to boost::polymorphic_downcast

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to an issue with boost::any_range that prevents it from being used with RTTI disabled. The problem is that boost::any_range indirectly uses boost::polymorphic_downcast which in turn uses dynamic_cast. Note that the dynamic_cast is only used to ensure the requested cast is valid and it's done only in non-release builds. It would be great if the check was simply skipped in RTTI-disabled environments, as it is done in release builds. This would result in loss of safety that boost::polymorphic_downcast provides but the pieces that use it would at least compile in RTTI-disabled environments. Would it be possible to fix this problem? If you wish I could create a ticket for this issue. BTW, there's a typo in the documentation of boost::any_range [1]. It mentions boost::forward_pass_traversal_tag, which does not exist. It should rather be boost::forward_traversal_tag. Boost support of MinGW

Hi guys, It is said that MinGW is not supported by Boost because it is not fully POSIX compatible: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/more/getting_started/windows.html#pch Excerpt: "A note to Cygwin and MinGW users If you plan to use your tools from the Windows command prompt, you're in the right place. If you plan to build from the Cygwin bash shell, you're actually running on a POSIX platform and should follow the instructions for getting started on Unix variants. Other command shells, such as MinGW's MSYS, are not supported-they may or may not work." My thanks to the five reviewers who took the time and trouble to submit full reviews, plus to everyone else who commented. Votes regarding acceptance: 4 voted to accept TypeIndex into Boost immediately. 1 voted to accept into Boost with conditions. Overall: I recommend immediate acceptance into Boost. Conditions: 1. No one liked the present boost::typeind namespace, almost anything else would be better. I see the namespace has already changed in the develop branch to boost::typeindex, so I think this is already solved. Other common comments: * More than one reviewer mentioned how they liked the docs. * More than one reviewer expressed a desire for an ability to programmatically parse through type specifier strings. I agree with Antony that that is another library which isn't TypeIndex (something Boost.Spirit based which works directly with mangled symbol string representations, representing them as a partial AST - preferably also with a libclang compatible backend - would be great, but that is a totally different library and TypeIndex 3.x provides extensibility for such an additional function). * More than one reviewer sought some method of preventing link if you mix up incompatible uses of TypeIndex and/or with RTTI. [Date Time] time_period has not default constructor

I am using the library Date Time, in particular the object time_period. I was wondering why (if there is a good reason) this class has not a default constructor. the default constructor result usefull when using for example a map with the operator [] or when using serialization from Boost. ptime class has default constructor. If a time_period is formed by two ptime objects, why time_period has not its default constructor as well. Thanks

Hi, I am using managed_xsi_shared_memory to allocate memory as below: boost::interprocess::managed_xsi_shared_memory shmem(boost::interprocess::create_only, key, atol(argv[2])); For some reason, I cannot allocate more than 8 GB of memory. Both sysctl and ipcs have limits higher than that set (output below). ------ Shared Memory Limits -------- max number of segments = 1874919423 max seg size (kbytes) = 9765624999999 max total shared memory (kbytes) = 39999999999999996 min seg size (bytes) = 1 kernel.shmmax = 9999999999999999 kernel.shmall = 9999999999999999 kernel.shmmni = 1874919423 vm.hugetlb_shm_group = 0 Is there any reason why this allocation should fail ?

Is there a boost library that I can use to dynamically deserialize structures from untyped buffers? I need to write code that receives a buffer of data from another computer, with some data serialized with bitfield structs. Yes, I do understand the difficulty of doing this and that it would have been easier if the data was serialized properly before transmission. I have no control over the transmitted data, but I can get the data format defined accurately. I fully understand the numerous edge cases and pitfalls with doing this and don't take the task lightly. Therefore, I'm looking for libs and open source code to make it easier. The incoming data format can and frequently does change so I can't hard code the format, but the format is defined in an XML file. I wrote an internal database containing field type, offset, and bit lengths, and populated via the XML file. My XML file is auto generated to match the as built interface definition, bit for bit. I wrote code that deserializes most of the data, but I need to rewrite it as a general purpose function to work for all cases, including bitfield structs. For now, I can assume same CPU (little endian) and the same compiler (gcc). However, both source and destination CPUs and OS's might be 32 bit or 64 bit. In future versions, I would like to add support for endian conversion and differing compiler packing. Does boost have something that would help? Sent from my Packard Bell 386

[Range] Extending the library for a base class and all its derived - enable_if

Hello, I am looking to make a class, whose definition I cannot touch, model a Range concept. To that end I use method 2, http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/range/doc/html/range/reference/ex… However, I am unable to specialize the relevant metafunctions (range_const_iterator, range_mutable_iterator, range_iterator) since they do not have an additional template parameter that would permit me to employ enable_if. I have found this impossible without touching either the class' definition or the metafunctions. Perhaps there is some other trick I am not aware of, in which case I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. If such a trick does not exist, then should these metafunctions feature an additional template parameter? Given that this is one of the methods to extend the library, it would make sense that one wishes to do so on conditions that enable_if can check. Albert

[Interprocess] Named objects with 'Managed External Buffer' (newbie)

Good afternoon, First, I apologize if I'm asking something obvious or outside the acceptable topics. I'm starting to use Boost so I'm quite newbie. I'm interested in using the managed_external_buffer in order to perform buffer copies into a created buffer that was created previously. Therefore, I will be storing mostly raw data into that buffer. Basically, I'm trying to do the following: Suppose a program uses the following int array: int numbers[10] = { 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 }; Eventually, I have to copy a chunk of that array into a pre-allocated buffer (i.e. the managed_external_buffer). Let the chunk be defined with: typedef struct { void* addr; size_t size; } chunk_t; However, these chunks can overlap, so I will sometimes merge two overlapping chunks into a bigger one. Example: // Chunk 1 chunk1_addr = (void*)&numbers[3]; chunk1_size = 3 * sizeof(int); // Chunk 2 chunk2_addr = (void*) &numbers[4]; chunk2_size = 4 * sizeof(int); The desired result is a single chunk containing {3, 4, 5, 6, 7}. The proposed problem is the merge, but how to find those chunks in the managed_external_buffer, so my question is the following: - Would it be possible to use named objects with another data type other than CharType and use managed_external_buffer::find to look for them? The thing is I could generate a hash or a numerical ID to identify the chunk. Generating a string using that number could be done but it would not be efficient. Otherwise, I guess I would have to keep a map (or other collection) with the <chunk ID, chunk pointer> pairs, define the managed_external_buffer with boost::interprocess::null_index (since I won't be using named objects) and use it through allocate and deallocate. Is this correct? circular buffer in a multithreaded program

Hello! I had some troubles with using boost::circular_buffer in a multithreaded application and I'm not really sure whether I actually ran into a bug or wether I expected just too much that wasn't promised in the thread-safety section. Anyhow, I wanted to share my story and a theory of what possibly went wrong. Maybe this posting even contains some ideas of how circular_buffer could be made a little more thread-safe without ading any mutex- or atomics-based synchronization. What I tried to do: I tried to grant one thread write access to a sub-range in a circular_buffer while another thread had read-access to a non-overlapping sub-range. At no time any capacity change was needed. Occasionally, in a reader thread I would "consume" some of the values that were already "committed" by a writer and make more room for the writer to store new data by - locking a mutex - calling cb.erase_first(n); - calling cb.resize(cb.capacity()); - notify writer that there is new free space to write stuff into - unlocking the mutex As for iterator invalidation, erase_first just invalidates iterators to the elements being removed. And resize in this case just increases the size again to the capacity which should not invalidate any iterators If I understand correctly. But the program did not work. The first thing that came to my attention was that the checked iterators of circular_buffer don't support this kind of multithreading as they register and unregister themselves into a linked list without any synchronization. But even after disabling the checked iterators via BOOST_CB_DISABLE_DEBUG, the program still did not work. I could not figure out why (with enough certainty) and eventually replaced circular_buffer with a custom vector-based data structure. My guess is that the iterators of a circular_buffer somehow depend on some part of the state of the buffer that is modifed by erase_first. Then, I would have a data race. But such a dependency does not really have to be there. In my own implementation, an iterator is "self-sufficient" in the sense that it does not need to access any of the buffer's state (indices, counters and whatnot) to access the right elements. And this way, erasing some unneeded elements from the buffer while some other thread still works on other values in the buffer via iterators does not cause a data race. In my opinion, it's reasonable to expect something like this to work using a circular_buffer. Maybe someone knows more about how circular_buffer iterators are implemented and/or wants to improve the circular_buffer implementation w.r.t. thread-safety to support this kind of use. Since I switched to a custom data structure that is able to deal with this situation, I did not investiage this issue with circular_buffer any further. I already lost about a day because of this. I hope, this is of interest to somebody who wants to avoid exessive copying in the standard "producer-consumer / bounded-buffer pattern". Cheers! Sebastian

Greetings, I’m using boost (1.55) (installed via macports) on: - OS X Mavericks - using clang (5.1, the Xcode default version, LLVM 3.4) - with CUDA 6 - and cmake (2.8.12.2). Hi, Recently,I tried to use Boost.Graph's VF2 implementation and after having played few days with this module, I was wondering if this implementation supports "adjacency_matrix" model as explained by the documentation (cf. http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_55_0/libs/graph/doc/vf2_sub_graph_iso.html) To demonstrate my point, you will find hereafter an C++ example extracted from the Boost.Graph's documentation. If the macro "ADJACENCY_LIST_STRUCT" is commented out, this code can't be compiled w/ VS2012 aka VC11 because the static assertion @line 837 of "boost/graph/vf2_sub_graph_iso.hpp" is triggered. My questions are: - Does this VF2 implementation supports "adjacency_matrix" model? - Is there any patch for supporting this model of graph? boost serialize issue when compile 64 bit application

Hi all, I am compiling 64 bit application, and got lots of errors about boost serializer, but I don't have any issue when compile 32 bit application. Is there some attention when transform from 32 bit boost to 64 bit boost? Any advice would be appreciate, thanks in advance! Hi! first, I'd like to focus on Boost 1.54. The documentation of boost::container::vector::resize(size_type) says the elements are *default constructed* [1]. The same applies to the respective constructor: boost::container::vector(size_type n). This is a significant deviation from what C++11 std::vector::resize(size_type) does as it *value-initializes* the new elements. Is the documentation of Boost.Container wrong in this case? Or the behavior of the container differs from the one defined by the standard? On the other hand in Boost 1.55 I see some changes related to the way elements are constructed (not mentioned in the release note). A new constructor and resize() method were added taking default_init_t to indicate default construction of new elements is desired. However, the documentation of boost::container::resize(size_type new_size, default_init_t) says the new elements are value initialized [2]. Note that the documentation of the respective constructor is correct and says the elements are default constructed. I also assume that the addition of the new constructor/resize method changed the behavior of the original constructor/resize method to be compliant with std::vector. Finally, @Ion: thanks for your good work on this library. I use it more and more often as it provides great features, useful especially in C++03 environments. If you want me to file any tickets on the above-mentioned issues please just say so. Build boost on OSX 10.9 with GCC 4.8

Hello, I have a somewhat specific problem. I need to build Boost 1.55 with the GCC 4.8 compiler on the mac. I have installed gcc-4.8 using homebrew. Using the GCC compiler instead of clang is non-negotiable in my case, because I require OpenMP which is not implemented in clang yet. Given that, I tried to build boost this way: export CC=/usr/local/Cellar/gcc48/4.8.2/bin/gcc-4.8 export CXX=/usr/local/Cellar/gcc48/4.8.2/bin/g++-4.8 export LD=/usr/local/Cellar/gcc48/4.8.2/bin/g++-4.8 ./bootstrap.sh —with-toolset=gcc-4.8 gives an error: Building Boost.Build engine with toolset gcc-4.8... Failed to build Boost.Build build engine Consult 'bootstrap.log' for more details apparently it does not recognize the gcc-4.8 toolkit. can not compile nearest neighbors in d dimensions

I can not create a point in d(in the code M is dimensions) dimensions. The error is this: error: the value of ‘M’ is not usable in a constant expression note: ‘int M’ is not const error: template argument 2 is invalid and the line is this: int M; .. typedef bg::model::point<float, M, bg::cs::cartesian> point; Then, I am trying to create an Rtree (I have already the data in a 2D array), like this: // create the rtree using default constructor bgi::rtree< point, bgi::quadratic<16> > rtree; point tmp; for ( unsigned i = 0 ; i < N ; ++i ) { // insert new value for(int j = 0 ; j < M ; ++j) { bg::set<M>(tmp, a[i][j]); } rtree.insert(tmp); } and I think the error is in insert(). I am attaching a file with the minimal code and one with the errors I receive (I receive another one too). I am struggling to achieve that all day long. :/

Indices of the polygons? Actually is not really clear to me what are we inserting in the tree..I tried finding some documentation on these methods, but I only found info on how to call them... [Boost-Interprocess] Suggested approach for message_queue with dynamically sized messages

I want to use boost::interprocess and message_queue...however, the need to specify a max message size is an inhibitor because my message data doesn't necessarily have a limit in size. What is the suggested approach for this scenario? The best I can think of at the moment is to have a "start object" and "stop object" message, and then a "data" message. Then I just send the object in chunks of max_msg_size and reconstitute on the other side. This is all quite possible of course, but if there was a prescribed way to handle this without opening myself to these complexities it would be nice. Thanks in advance, Rob Conde

phoenix bind vs boost bind?

First of all, I'm using boost 1.55.0 on MSVC9. I've been using boost::phoenix in various places in my code base for easier usage of std::for_each and friends. However, I do not create lazy functions for a lot of the functions I bind to because they are only needed in one place most of the time. As a result, I use boost::phoenix::bind the same as I'd use boost::bind(). However I have read in various places that boost::bind is being deprecated. I'm not sure if there is truth to this, but is there a reason to choose one over the other? Is phx::bind() basically an "upgrade" to boost::bind? If I intermingle them, I have a lot of issues out of placeholder ambiguities that results in more boilerplate code (i.e. using boost::phoenix::placeholders::_1 everywhere). Any tips? I haven't used boost in a few years so I just want to make sure I'm not using it incorrectly. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I like Qi, but the compile times are terrible sometimes. My example is similar to this in [1], but it needs 3x as much time to compile. I thought this problem might be omitted by including selectively what is needed. So I went into [1] and replaced #include <boost/spirit/include/qi.hpp> by #include <boost/spirit/include/qi_action.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/qi_grammar.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/qi_uint.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/qi_char.hpp> . I got far, but then, there comes up a long error message, beginning like in [2]. My questions are: * is selectively including from "boost/spirit/include" supposed to work, or should this never be done? * if it should work, what is still left to be included in my case? nearest neighbors search with boost

I just find out that boost supports nearest neighbor searching, will amazes me. However, I do not want just to use the nearest() method, I want to study it and understand it. Is there any relevant documentation, specifically on how NNS is performed in R-tree? Are the code files that implement this method visible to the user? I downloaded the latest .tar file. possible bug with boost::is_convertible

Hi, I found a situation where (with gcc 4.8.2 & 1.55) I cannot compile a call to boost::is_convertible, but I can compile a similar call to std::is_convertible. I don't know yet if this is a bug. Is it undefined behaviour to pass is_convertible a type with a deleted or private copy ctor? Before I go into the details, I'd like to ask, which type_traits library should we prefer these days, post c++11? Intuition says std should be more stable/portable, is that wrong? If it is indeed std, is there a way (perhaps a macro?) to make boost mirror std (I'm talking about type_traits only). The reason for having such a mirror option is not for new code, but for other boost libraries which need type_traits. E.g, I came across this issue from boost::iterator. Here is the discordant code: #include <type_traits> #include <boost/type_traits/is_convertible.hpp> struct A { A() = default; A(const A&) = delete; // or private: A(const A&) = default; }; struct Ref_A { // proxy reference to A operator A& () { return *_ptr; } A* _ptr; }; int main() { (void)std::is_convertible< Ref_A, A >::value; (void)boost::is_convertible< Ref_A, A >::value; } I compile with: {g++|clang++} -std=c++11 -I${BOOST_INCLUDE} -Wall -Wextra -c With gcc 4.8.2, the call to boost::is_convertible fails, complaining that the copy ctor of A is deleted (or private.) The similar call to std::is_convertible compiles ok. With clang 3.4, both calls compile. The reason for the discrepancy is that boost/type_traits/intrinsics.hpp defines the macro BOOST_IS_CONVERTIBLE(T,U) for clang, but not for gcc. Because of that, at the bottom of boost/type_traits/is_convertible.hpp, clang uses the macro to implement is_convertible, whereas gcc uses is_convertible_impl_dispatch instead (which is the one that fails). A temporary fix I found is to define that macro to defer to std: #include <type_traits> #include <boost/type_traits/intrinsics.hpp> #ifndef BOOST_IS_CONVERTIBLE #define BOOST_IS_CONVERTIBLE(T, U) (std::is_convertible<T, U>::value) #endif #include <boost/type_traits/is_convertible.hpp> As I was asking above, is there a way to do that systematically for all type_traits?
