boost::pool + shared memory

I need to build a system for having miscellaneous objects in a shared memory segment. Essentially, we need a few inter-process singletons. These classes have STL containers, so I was looking at using pool_allocator and writing a UserAllocator to use ACE_Mem_Map ( http://doc.ece.uci.edu/Doxygen/Current/html/ace/classACE__Mem__Map.html#_det ails ) or something. I just wanted to see if anyone had done anything resembling this and could give me any pointers or tips. Thanks, Tom Matelich PS Why can't I see who is a member of this group? overflow of clock_t with clock(), timing longer processes

hello hackers first a hi to everyone. just signed today as a new member to this mailinglist. well.. i've got a problem and hope someone can help me. i run a c++ program (mostly on a sunblade 100 or a sunblade 1000) about genetic algorithms which takes quite some time to solve for certain problems (up to 100 hours) because its important to me to compare different jobs i need to measure the elapsed cpu time used for the particular jobs. well, i could use the standart system time, but because my running job is not always the only one i dont get really worthy results. so i used the std::clock(). but measuring 1/1000000 of a seconds with that and with the clock_t beeing a long int of course this results in a overflow after around 36 minutes. thought to find something about that in the boost library but timer.hpp just gets also de maximum elapsed time out.. doesnt really help is there some way this can be achieved? would be really neat to get an answer from anyone soon. thanks uf

bind question

Is there a syntax for making boost::bind bind to functions that are templates? Here is an (extremally simplified) example that doesnt compile: #include <boost/bind.hpp> template < class Function > void f( Function func ) { func( 46 ); } void g( int num ) { num++; } int main( void ) { boost::bind( f, g )(); boost::bind( f, _1 )( g ); return 0; } The two bind lines in main both get an error "call of non-function". Another Bind Question

Bind has been working very well for some of the things I have been wanting to do. I have run into a rather puzzling problem this time and was wondering what was happening: Here is the example: void f( int ) { } struct array_obj { int operator[]( int ){ return NULL; } }; int main() { array_obj a; int array[1]; int value = a[0]; boost::bind( f, _1 )( 3 ); boost::bind( f, _1 )( value ); boost::bind( f, _1 )( array[0] ); boost::bind( f, _1 )( a[0] ); return 0; } The first three bind statements compile just fine. The third one issues an error: function call 'operator()(int)' does not match. Along with all 20 variations of operator() generated by bind. Obviously there is something amiss with going through the return value of operator[](). I also get the same problem using an iterator which would be going through operator*(). I am using CodeWarrior 7 on Mac on OS X. Could this be a compiler specific problem? I can work around the problem using bind1st but it seems odd that bind1st works and bind doesnt? Could CW have included some magic in bind1st to work around this? Thanks for the help, ..Duane

iterator_adaptors on Tru64 version V6.1-027

Hi all, I'm trying to use the iterator_adaptors class on Tru64. Building nested FSM with BGL...

Has anyone already implemented a nested Finite State Machine with the Boost Graph Library? (Or a Petri net for that matter.) The thing that really puzzles me is how to implement the nesting, i.e., all nodes in a subset of the graph react to the same ``events'' from the ``outside world'', but I want to avoid making all the edges from the ``outside world'' nodes to the subset nodes... The requirements are minimal: as listed in the header file, the Bound argument must be copyable, assignable, equality-comparable, comparable using the Compare argument, and incrementable and decrementable using the Succ and Pred arguments. It imposes no other requirements, so a non-scalar could work. Unfortunately I don't know how to define a useful decrement operator for a string, or a Compare operator for a complex number. Did you have some particular non-scalar in mind? The original version didn't need the increment and decrement operations, internally, but the client was still obliged to apply the equivalent of an increment operation. That made it slippery to use on strings. You could define increment to mean "append a space", so that a dictionary page might occupy the range "lost" to "love " (note the space). That assumes a lot about the character encoding, which the client (but not extent_set<>) is allowed to do. Unfortunately there is no simple equivalent for decrementing, so the trick doesn't work with closed ranges. It is conceivable that I might be able to continue storing half-open ranges internally, and thus avoid needing a decrement operation. I have uploaded to the Boost files section couple of archives containing an implementation of a class template extent_set; look in the folder "extent_set". The zip and tgz archives there are identical. Included in each is a header file and a test suite. boost::extent_set<> implements a set of half-open ranges on a scalar type, with automatic splitting and merging, appropriate for managing ranges of disk blocks or video frames. In use it looks like: boost::extent_set<int> set; set.insert(10, 20); // now contains [10,20) set.insert(30, 50); // now contains [10,20) [30,50) set.erase(40, 45); // now contains [10,20) [30,40) [45,50) set.insert(20, 30); // now contains [10,40) [45,50) std::cout << "(" << set.begin()->first << "," << set.begin()->second << ")" << std::endl; // writes "(10,40)" It is implemented using std::map. Hi, Newbie question. I am using one of the latest versions of boost (not sure which version, but I downloaded it in Sept'00) and am using it with stlport ver 4.5. I've been successful in using the shared_ptr, shared_array, etc type of libraries with MSVC++ 6.0 (sp5) on a Win2K machine (sp2). However, recently I've been trying to get the regex library to work but seem to be getting linker errors. As indicated in the documentation, I set the env. using vcvars32, and used nmake to compile and install the regex libraries (both .lib and .dll files). I also found most of the changes you suggested, but I looked into these assert failures compiling on SunPro 5.3 -- and I found that they really were indicating that the compiler was doing something wrong with the typedefs inside the constructed iterator. Ignoring the problem by #ifdefing these out I think may cause problems with the iterator adaptors in some contexts, though I think they will probably work correctly for simple dereferencing and incrementing. To fix (at least partly) these, I found I needed to turn on some of the hacks for BORLANDC in the detail/named_template_params header, specifically the ones to use type_traits::yes_type instead of a bool specialization. I also needed to turn on BOOST_BUGGY_INTEGRAL_CONSTANT_EXPRESSIONS for the static_assert header; I suspect the BORLANDC #ifdefs I had to turn on are related to this same problem, and they ought to be unified in the config header. Once that was done, the compiler still got itself quite confused by the line in detail/named_template_params.hpp: typedef typename choose_arg_or_default<typename is_default<Arg> ::type>::type Selector; Splitting this up into typedef typename is_default<Arg>::type is_default; typedef typename choose_arg_or_default<is_default>::type Selector; seemed to keep the compiler from getting itself all screwed up. This got me part of the way there, but one of those two Static_asserts was still firing, and it seemed to me correctly so (that is, correctly in that the compiler was behaving incorrectly elsewhere). I came to the conclusion that it was still the same buggy integral constant specialization problem -- if I were to rewrite some of the selector code to use yes_type instead of a bool specialization, I believe I could get it to work, but given that that would have meant some wholesale changes to type_traits, I stopped there. Hello, I'm trying to explore the compose, bind, and mem_fn libraries. I used a "real" problem I'm having. Given a vector<Trade>, I want to gather a sum of the return values of Trade::volume(). I wound up writing "accumulate_with_op" thusly: template <class _InputIterator, class _Tp, class _UnaryOperation> _Tp accumulate_with_op(_InputIterator first, _InputIterator last, _Tp Init, _UnaryOperation unary_op) { for ( ; first != last; ++first) Init = Init + unary_op(*first); return Init; } And I can call it like this: vector<Trade> li; // ..... sum = accumulate_with_op(li.begin(),li.end(),0,mem_fun_ref (&Trade::volume)) This gives me my sum pretty nicely, so I'm sort of happy... BUT... I tried for a long time to use combinations of for_each, compose_f_gx, and mem_fn to be able to do the Sum (to lead to other things like mean, stddev) into a stateful function object. Something like this: /* broken code, trying to convery my intentions */ MeanValue m1; m1 = for_each(l.begin(), l.end(),compose_f_gx(MeanValue(),mem_fun_ref (&Trade::volume)); cout << m1.result(); I wanted my MeanValue::operator() to be called with the return value from my member function, and I wanted to be able to "capture" the result in a function object i could interrogate afterwards. 1. Am I barking up the wrong tree? accumulate_with_op was pretty easy to write, but my problem seemed straighforward enough to be solved with standard c++ or Boost building blocks. 2. Compiler status: win32 question

Does a failure on the Compiler Status chart http://www.boost.org/status/cs-win32.html indicate that a certain compiler cannot use the boost libraries fully? Take for instance, the failure of Visual C++ reported against libs/concept_check/class_concept_fail_expected.cpp: What exactly does this failure mean to a user of the boost libraries? Does it render the boost library or some portion therein unusable by the VC++ programmer? Thanks! -k

Simple iterator adaptor example

I have taken a quick look at iterator adaptor and it seems quite powerful. It seems that iterator_adaptor has two uses. First to adapt one iterator to another. It also seems like it should be able to be used as an interface to other information that has container like qualities that needs an iterator. For example files in directory. Does anyone have an example of how to build one of the later? Not specifically an iterator over files, but the general ability to build an iterator from something that's not an iterator? MSVC6 and tuple

I have a tuple as a member of one of my classes, and it appears, that MSVC 6 requires me to do a using boost::tuple, rather than declaring it with the boost namespace at the var. For this declaration in my header: boost::tuple<int, double> willis; I get the following error: file.h(161) : error C2059: syntax error : '<' file.h(161) : error C2238: unexpected token(s) preceding ';' If I add the using (which I would prefer not to do), the declaration: tuple<int, double> willis; works fine. Any suggestions?

Hi, I compiled this program: transitive_closure_test.cpp with: g++ -ftemplate-depth-30 -I /net/cooler/vol/export/proteome/murvai/CC/BOOST/boost_1_26_0/ transitive_closure_test.cpp then I run: Created graph with 13 vertices. transitive_closure Segmentation fault (core dumped) Exit 139 What can I do in this case? preprocessor/min and MSVC

I saw the boost preprocessor library and I thought that BOOST_PREPROCESSOR_MIN might help solve a problem in some code that I am maintaining. This code has the naive implementation of MIN and MAX: #define MIN(a,b) ((a)<(b)?(a):(b)) This code also has many (tens of thousands!) of places where a function calls are used as arguments to MIN and MAX like this: foo=MIN(func(args1),func(args2)) The function called is a very long running function. The performance hit taken by three evaluations of the function is a problem I am working to fix. I know the best solution is to add some local variables, and store the results of the functions in them, then use MIN on the local vars. Boost.Threads Win32 Implementation

The first thing I discovered when trying to get threads working is that the -mthreads option was not being used in jam. I added the following to the gcc-tools.jam file. I'm not totally sure it's right -- it's needed for mingw32, but I don't know if it is necessary for cygwin. if $(NT) { flags gcc CFLAGS <threading>multi : -mthreads ; flags gcc LINKFLAGS <threading>multi : -mthreads ; } Adding that let's gdb actually work on it... It doesn't crash deep in the bowels of thread exiting in some kernel library routine. Although it still crashes in on_thread_exit doing handlers->push_front(func). Actually, it crashes in some STL stuff, but that's I'm not sure why, I'm not that good with gdb yet. After digging through the implementation of threadmon.cpp, I realized that (unless I missed something) on_thread_exit was always called with the same argument, which is the address of cleanup in tss.cpp. Therefore all of the stuff in threadmon.cpp for keeping a list of functions registered with on_thread exit were not really needed, it would always have a list of the same pointer. So why not just keep that pointer and call it on thread exit. I also discovered that DllMain wasn't getting called at all because it wasn't defined as extern "C". I think I transcribed it correctly, but maybe I missed a semicolon or something. Also, in tss.cpp, cleanup may be called without any handlers registered... I'm not sure if this was always the case, or if I introduced this case, so the cleanup function needs to do an if(handlers) check before actually trying to call them. And now the tests pass! Wheee! One more thing. I'm still not convinced for the need of the dll. The issue is needing to know when a thread has exited, and I think that could be done by an object that was destructed in a thread-proxy function. Since you are already using a thread_proxy function, I'm wondering if you considered this approach and if so, why you rejected it.

If you really need to get this to work, it is still possible: You could use boost::any, and any_cast through all the possible types. I'm new to BGL and studying the examples provided with the library. Here is a problem I'm having: I compiled a program, for example,dfs- example.cpp, it was fine. And then I changed the program a little bit, and tried to recompile it, I got the following error: boost\iterator_adaptors.hpp(845) : fatal error C1001: INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR Then I tried Rebuild All or cleaned the project first, and then compiled it. I think it is safe to say that the usage is more widely spread than the answers indicate. It seems that the lightweight utility classes are the most popular, likely due to the fact that their impact on existing systems is easily manageable. Thank you for your answers! We're using Boost because it provides stable and slim functionality that helps us making FEMTown more efficient, flexible and robust. I had been using strstream, but the lexical_cast wrapped all the complexity up for me. I chose Boost because it's portable (our software runs on Windows NT and on embedded software using gcc). I'm getting a "refernced symbol not found" error when loading modules compiled with Boost. Dear All I don't know if this is the appropriate thing to do here (I'm sure the moderator will filter me out if it isn't), but I failed to introduce myself on other lists and with hindsight I think it would have been better if I had. I've been programming in C++ for about 18 months, since I left university and started working. I was introduced to the C++ standard library and boost libraries a few months ago by a member of the ACCU. I have just started a new job writing distributed software using the C++ standard library and the ATL and I'm making as much use of boost as possible. Previous to that I was writing windows software to control dot markers and laser markers using the MFC. core dump when invoking jam

On a Linux Mandrake 8.1 (i586), I succesfully built jam, but when I invoke it I got no output except a core dump. Has anyone encountered the same problem ? I compiled it with gcc 3.0.1, and modified gcc-tools.jam to use gcc- 3.0.1 and g++-3.0.1 instead of gcc and g++ (which are 2.96). Thanks. Julien.

I've been trying for a few hours now to get the threads lib examples to compile. I built the libraries with jam and all but python built correctly. Hello, I am trying to use the BCG as backbone for a ControlFlowGraph in a compiler project. It seems that I cannot use BCG for this task because of the follow contradicting (from BCG point of view) requirements: 1. I want to be able to breadth_first_search through my graph. 2. I want to be able to keep descriptors to vertices 'for ever' so I can refer a specific vertex at any given time (for removal or whatever other reasons). To implement requirement 1 my adjacency_list should have its VertexList of type vecS. To implement requirement 2 my adjacency_list should have its VertexList of type listS. Unfortunately those are mutualy exclusive and it seems that BCG is unsuited for the job. But I can't really think of a decent generic graph library unable to support those requirements. After all, it's all about being able to use basic graph traversals on randomly mutating graphs. STL has the list which has those nice properties, why a graph library should be different?! Perhaps I am missing something and I am asking for help: how should I declare my graph and how can I do a bfs on it? Thanks in advance, Cristi

You could take a "nasty-hack" approach, if you *really* wanted to: 1) Add an 'any_base' class with a virtual function 2) Extend 'any' to return an 'any_base *' referring to the held value, using C-cast notation (derived-to-base when possible, reinterpret when not) 3) Derive your held value types from a common base class 'my_base', which was derived from 'any_base'; add the operations you want to perform to 'my_base' 4) Call the 'any' function returning 'any_base *', downcasting it to 'my_base'. This will result in undefined behaviour if the contained value is not actually derived from 'my_base' (because of the reinterpret_cast behaviour in step 2) I *think* that will work (never tried it). Messy, though, and IMO not generic enough to mess with. Alternatively, you could: 1) Visit 'any'/'any::placeholder'/'any::holder' to provide: void any::action(any which) { content->action(which); } virtual void any::holder::action(any which) { any_action(held, which); } 2) Declare a function 'any_action(T, any)', where the any parameter designates which "operation" to perform. Overloading is then possible on T. Also, where T is a user-defined type, Koenig lookup can be used (abused?) to create different (non-overlapping) sets of "operations". Just some thoughts. casting shared_ptr while preserving use_count..

I'd like to essentially downcast (to derived) from a base class with virtual methods while preserving (and incrementing) the use_count.. for an upcast, I can simply assign a shared_ptr<Child> to shared_ptr<Parent>. But for the downcast, I need to incorporate a dynamic_cast<childType> to get what I want.. With an older compiler that didn't like member templates, the boost conf would leave the internal pointer and use count as public, so I wrote my own casting function.. However, the newer compiler doesn't give this public access, so I may be stuck without modifying the header... any thoughts?

I noticed that array.hpp uses #ifndef BOOST_ARRAY_HPP #define BOOST_ARRAY_HPP .. #endif and array_traits.hpp uses: #if !defined(BOOST_ARRAY_HPP) #define BOOST_ARRAY_HPP 1 .. #endif This means that you cant use them both at the same time? The first one wins? These are certainly similar classes but they dont seem to collide. Is this a subtle bug or intentional? ..Duane

Am I correct in assuming you get a compiler error on the std::cout lines? If so, then the problem is that class 'any' does not have an extraction operator defined. compiling boost on Win2k

I got a this suggestion from Damien Mulligan which worked really well. Use subst to map a drive letter to the path for the MSVC directory then use that drive letter in the VISUALC environment variable. Works like a charm. I should of thought of that. Thanks Damien. I don't have an answer for your specific JAM/Boost problem but I've seen similar build problems (using cons)on NT and ended up using temp files to hold the command line for the linker, rather than try to figure out why the command lines worked fine on some machines and were too much for others. Build Problem

I am trying to build boost on windows 2000 and I get "The input line is too long" errors. I have included some sample output from jam. Please note I switched to short file names to try and alleviate this problem. Anyone have any suggestions on overcoming this problem? precompiled jam executables uploaded

I just uploaded precompiled jam executables to the Files section for linuxx86, irix and solaris. I also added an InstallingBoost page to the Wiki with links to these executables. I hope this helps people with using the Boost.Build system. I gzip'ed the executables (except for the linux one) since I'm not sure if users find it a hassle to gunzip them first. It would safe space in the Files section though. People with jam executables for other platforms, please add them or transfer them to me so I can put them on there. toon

Building with Comeau

Anyone had any success using the new build system with Comeau C++ on Win32 (MSVC6)? I'm using the pre-compiled Win32 jam binary from the FreeType project. Is this still suitable? I noticed Dave has checked in a whole bunch of changes to SourceForge. If not, is there an easy way to get the whole branch out of CVS? I've only ever used the web-interface which doesn't seem to provide this facility. The first problem I encountered was jam trying to use mv. After replacing the $(MV) instructions in the como-tools.jam with copy, I managed to get some obj files produced, but none of the libraries will link. First up, I noticed that the build system requires libcomo to be in a certain location, so I fixed that, but still nothing will link (lots of undefined external symbols - some to boost, some to std). I'm a Comeau newbie, so I may have messed up building libcomo (which would explain the missing std symbols), but not the missing boost symbols. Cheers, - Dale.

Thread Summary Experiment -- on the Wiki

Last week we were having a discussion about the sort of content that might, or might not belong on the Wiki. I have tried another small experiment that might be a useful approach to augmenting the current boost information. The idea is to build a summary of mailing list discussion threads related to each library (or other topics). Many of the discussion on the mailing list can provide insight into the library design as well as solutions to specific problems not necessarily incorporated in the documentation. I built a small example for the function library. http://www.crystalclearsoftware.com/cgi-bin/boost_wiki/wiki.pl?Function_Lib… -_Mail_Thread_Summary I have used the following convention for this: -- Order the thread names by date -- Title of the thread is either the email title, or a more precise title followed by the original thread title in parens The link performs a search that returns all the items in the thread from the yahoo groups site. One problem is that since the search is full text, some threads cannot be easily retrieved. For example searching "function review" will return a pile of email on threads and other topics unrelated to function. Despite the issues, this would seem to me this would be a useful contribution library users could build. Thoughts? Jeff

concept_check and B&N trick

I ran into problems using BOOST_CLASS_REQUIRES in conjunction with the base class in the Barton-Nackman trick/Curiously recursive template technique. I want to require functions that take the derived type as an argument. So I declare a variable of the derived at struct level in the concept class, but then g++ (2.95) complains about it being an invalid use of undefined type... forward declaration... . Is there a way to make this work? If so, does anyone have/know of an example I can see how to order things to make it work? Thanks, E

I don't use STLPort, but you might try a slight modification to boost/config/suffix.hpp. Search for BOOST_NO_STDC_NAMESPACE, and you'll see the line: namespace std { using ::ptrdiff_t; using ::size_t; } Try adding "using ::ctype;" into the list of using declarations. This may not work, though; I don't know if a using declaration can nominate the name of a template. -- Jim
