Now that I've used all this swell stuph, it's time to pay the piper: turn it over to QC and get it into "The Build". Unfortunately the QC people would like some instructions that describe which version of boost-build I'm using; how to install it; which version of the libs I'm using; etc. <some background> It's been a couple of months since I started with the boost libs, and I don't remember all the gyrations I went through to get it working and I'm POSITIVE I did a LOT more than is required. I remember that, after downloading and extracting boost_1_27_0.tar.gz, I had to get the current version from CVS before I could get a clean compile. (I tried turning over copies of my disk drives to them but it turns out that is not considered acceptable documentation. %>[ ) I've been following the jamboost and Boost-Users mailing lists so I know there've been quite a few changes - especially to boost-build. After building a "clean" testbed machine, I started by downloading boost-build.win.zip and following the instructions in the readme.html. Well, that didn't work. I can do a hand job on the path but I'm not sure what environment variables are actually required. Current plan is to pull the library source directly from CVS. Problem is, I don't know what version to tell QC I'm using and, unless all the folks at boost.org would agree not to add anything to CVS for a while, I SURE can't tell them how to re-create what I did. ;) </some background> I can always take what I've got; check it in and call it a day but that's not the path to getting boost integrated into the development environment around here. (Hey, I'm trying to be an evangelist here.) Anyone by any chance working on some updated instructions and/or docs that maybe aren't ready for prime time but would be willing to share? TIA PS: Current target systems are Win2000, SP2 and Visual C++ 6.0, SP5 and vanilla Red Had Linux 7.2.

Solaris jam build

I am receiving the following on a Solaris system when using: jam -sBOOST_ROOT=. -sTOOLS=gcc status/Jamfile:53: in failed-test-file warning: unknown rule FAIL_EXPECTED status/Jamfile:100: in fail-to-build ./tools/build/boost-base.jam:1407: in subvariant-target ./tools/build/boost-base.jam:1448: in main-target ./tools/build/boost-base.jam:1065: in declare-local-target status/Jamfile:35: in boost-test status/Jamfile:119: in compile-fail status/Jamfile:368: in SubInclude ./tools/build/allyourbase.jam:1141: in subinclude Jamfile:5: in module scope {...above repeated many times...} Unable to load Boost.Build, it seems that the build system files were located, but the build system is not defined. Attempted to use, as the bootstrap, this file: ./tools/build/boost-build.jam. This means that even though that file was loaded it either failed to directly load the build system files, or it failed to specify where to find and load the files by calling the 'build-system [path] ;' rule. Please consult the documentation at 'http://www.boost.org'. What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Sorry -- Newbie here -- I don't know exactly what the 'latest CVS state' is or how to get it. I have been trying to build boost-python on Windows95 with MSVC++6. I have boost 1.27 and activestate python 2.2.1 build 222. I can get it to compile but the link fails. Here is the linker message for the boost-example1: Linking... creating a shared_ptr<T> from a weak_ptr<T>

When creating a shared_ptr<T> from a weak_ptr<T>, I want the shared_ptr<T> to use the same count as the shared_ptr the weak_ptr was constructed from. I could create a new shared_ptr, based on the pointer I can get() from the weak_ptr. But in this case, this shared_ptr will keep its own count. Let me fill you in on my use-case. An object creates some big data-structure on request of its clients, taking into account some options specified by the client while making the request. Now I'd like the server-object to keep a weak_ptr to these big data-structure to provide quickly the same result once another client performs an identical request. The server should however not keep a shared_ptr because otherwise all datastructure will stay in memory. And therefor I need to create a shared_ptr from a weak_ptr. thanks, toon

AllExamples.dsw from BGL Errata Web-site

Hi, I am still having no luck with this file. In the Boost Graph Library book (Great book!), Errata web page (http://siek.info/bgl.html) it says... "On the accompanying CD, the file \BGL\VC++ Projects\AllExamples.dsw is missing. You can download the missing file from here BGLVCprojects.tgz." When I download it I get a 454K file. When I open it with WinZip winzip tells me there is a single file BGLVCprojects.tgz in it. when it opens that single file it only finds ONE file in that accum_compile_times.dsw size 4639 bytes. this does not make sense fo r a file that started at 454K but I don't seem able to get any more out of it. I am using WinZip 6.2. Another machine with WinZIP 8.0 reports 'Invalid compressed header after 1 entry'. Is anyone else getting this result. If not could you email me a file that works for you? Association Library?

Are there any generic components in Boost (or elsewhere) for *directly* representing associations between classes? Generalization, composition, aggregation and association are major ideas in the object model. Generalization can be implemented fairly directly in C++ using inheritance. Composition and aggregation can be represented directly in C++ using data members (when the number of parts in each whole is small and fixed), or using STL containers (when the number of parts in each whole is large or variable). But Standard C++ (including the STL) provides no *direct* support for representing associations, i.e., collections of links between objects in two or more classes. (David Papurt makes this point in "Inside the Object Model: The Sensible Use of C++.") For example, the STL does not offer a way to *directly* represent the 1-to-many "Supervises" association from the Manager class to the Employee class. One would like to have links in both directions: forward links forthe employees a manager supervises and a back link to the manager each employee is supervised by. Of course, one could code this all "by hand" using a container of pointers to employees for each manager and a back pointer for each employee. But the implementation details really have little to do with managers and employees and would be pretty much the same for parents and children or teachers and students. Moreover, while not difficult, managing the forward and back links correctly (and in an exception-safe manner) is tedious. It would be nice to have templates that can be instantiated to implement specific associations. In brief, STL containers directly support composition and aggregation but not association. I am new to the Boost library, but was not able to find this capability in Boost. If an association library is available in Boost (or elsewhere), I would be happy to know so. shared_ptr and incomplete types

The documentation at http://www.boost.org/libs/smart_ptr/shared_ptr.htm states that "T may be void, but in that case, either an explicit delete function must be passed in, or the pointed-to object must have a trivial destructor." I notice that the implementation available at boost.org does not allow the single-argument ctor to be called on an incomplete type, e.g.: class simple; simple * createSimple(); shared_ptr<simple> simpleFactory() { return shared_ptr<simple>(createSimple()); } The documentation on the single-argument ctor, though, does not state that T must be a complete type. Is the implementation stricter than the documentation, or is the documentation incomplete? I'm writing an article on the smart pointers for the CUJ, and I'd like to know if I can correctly state "The default behavior for shared_ptr is to require complete types. You can, however, manage an incomplete type if you provide a function or function object, which will be called when the owned object is destroyed." -- Jim

Graph Library - AllExamples.dsw, anyone got it?

Hi All, Just read the excellent Boost Graph Library book. The AllExamples.dsw file is not on the accompanying CD. In the Errata web page (http://siek.info/bgl.html) it says... "On the accompanying CD, the file \BGL\VC++ Projects\AllExamples.dsw is missing. You can download the missing file from here BGLVCprojects.tgz." The file there is a .dsw file but it is NOT the missing one. Has anyone got the real thing? All the best and thanks - Richard Howells

operator == in shared_ptr

Hi Because the operator== function compares pointers and not what they're pointing to this is what I've had to do to get it to find an integer. The only problem with this is that we are going to end up with 3 STL-like libraries within the same language :) (the original one ("run-time"), the MPL one (pure compile time), and something in between, - HSTL (Heterogeneous Sequences Template Library :)). BGL: "Supergraphs?"

Hi, I've been learning the BGL and porting some existing code over to it. First off, Kudos to Jeremy, Lie-Quan and all the BGL developers. This library is great! I find the filtered_graph potentially very useful for my application except for one case. In some (not rare) instances I need to be able to create a filtered_graph that spans two graphs. In other words, I have two separate graphs. Most of the time the information I need is entirely contained in one graph so a filtered_graph works perfectly. However, sometimes I need to create a filtered_graph from several separate graphs and link them together in a well-defined manner (i.e. I easily know where the edges should go). I need a "supergraph" that is the combination of the two filtered graphs. Right now the application handles this problem by creating a new graph from the existing graphs. But this takes time and memory. I'd like to get rid of this overhead if possible, especially since these are often short-lived graphs. The filtered_graph objects would not be induced subgraphs so a subgraph object wouldn't work (subgraph also doesn't support something that spans multiple graphs anyway). What I need is the opposite of subgraph -- a unified interface to multiple filtered_graphs. This seems very hard to do because each filtered_graph will have its own vertex and edge index mappings. An extra level of indirection would solve the problem but I'm not sure the overhead would be less than simply creating a new graph. Thoughts? Opinions? Newbie: problems installing under RedHat 7.2

I'm just trying to install Boost library under RedHat 7.2. I was following the build instructions found on the Boost website, but it seemed to fail for several targets. I'm wondering if it's because RH7.2 uses its version of gcc 2.96. Since my project work needs gcc 3.0+, my question is, what do I need to do in order to use gcc3/g++3 instead of gcc/g++? The build system seems exotic and I just want to get over with the installation asap and start to use the library. (does changing /usr/bin/gcc and /usr/bin/g++ links work?) Redistributing Boost?

Boost has a reasonably liberal license for use in product both commercial and non-commercial. However I am wondering about redistributing source code. Does the boost license(s?) allow the sources to be redistributed as part of a commercial product? For example, a commericial library or framework that is developed using boost for underlying support and that library is sold in source code form. boost::thread_specific_ptr problem

Hi there, I've encountered a curious problem when using thread_specific_ptr. We are developing a Win32 Service and for each thread we need an object that stays alive for as long as the thread runs (except for the main thread). So we created a dll and in its DllMain function we did something like this: boost::thread_specific_ptr<SomeClass> someClass; BOOL WINAPI DllMain( HINSTANCE hinstDLL, DWORD fdwReason, LPVOID lpvReserved ) { switch ( fdwReason ) { case DLL_THREAD_ATTACH: someClass.reset( new SomeClass ); // Breakpoint 1 case DLL_THREAD_DETACH: someClass.reset(); // Breakpoint 2 } } And now comes the curious bit: If you build this dll and implicitly link it with the exe the exe's startup code hangs in GetModuleFileName (). This is the call stack upto that point _setargv (STDARGV.C) __getmainargs (CRTLIB.C) WinMainCRTStartup (CRTEXE.C) At that point the code hasn't reached Breakpoint 1 yet (it's still in the exe's startup code in the main thread and we are not interested in the main thread) It is not the class we are allocating. We tried it with an empty class and that produced the same result. However, if we stored an object in a TLS slot allocated with the API, everything works. It probably has nothing to do with the exe being a service either, since the same dll with linked to a normal exe had the same problems. To complicate matters even further we reached Breakpoint 1 in a number of runs, but as soon as we left DllMain in those instances the application hanged again. If you break then you see from the call stack that the code is running somewhere in NTDll. Are we using thread_specific_ptr in a way that it wasn't meant to be used, or did we encounter a real problem here? I've used thread_specific_ptr before and had no problems then. PS: We develop under Windows 2000 on a Compaq Evo W6000 dual processor machine, using MSVC 6, SP 5 and the 08/2001 version of the platform SDK. The service can run both under the Local System Account or under an account with absolutely no privileges at all. Sven Van Echelpoel

operator== in the shared_ptr class

Hi Why does the operator == function in the shared_ptr class compare the pointer values and not what they are pointing to? I'm trying to use the find function (in the stl) and I don't know how to get around this. Here's an example. vector <shared_ptr <SomeClass> > vecStuff; shared_ptr<SomeClass> pkToFind(new SomeClass(x,y,z)); if (find(vecStuff.begin(), vecStuff.end(), pkToFind) != vecStuff.end()) { } This didn't work as expected because the shared_ptr class's operator== function does not use SomeClass's operator == function to do the comparison. Instead it compares the pointer values. I don't understand why they made it like this and I don't think they were dumb enough to overlook this so there must be something I'm missing. Building Boost 1.27.0 for VC7

I'd like to build boost for VC7. I've followed several of the threads that detail some of the problems that people has faced and the solutions that have been found. Being the first time that I use boost: -How do I get access to a "free" CVS client that I can use on my machine and some information on how to use it? I'm familiar with SourceSafe on Windows platforms and I'm running Windows 2000 at home, Windows XP in my office. - Is it worth it to build 1.27, or should I wait for a "minor point" (1.27.1??) release or should I download the sources and go from there? It seems that there have been several changes made to 1.27.0 to accomodate VC7. Regards, Javier.

Boost.Threads lib files

[Tried sending this through news://gmane.comp.lib.boost.user a few days ago, but it didn't seem to get through anywhere] Hi, I've started experimenting a bit with Boost.Thread, platform is currently WinXP / VC.NET. Just a question on the generated libraries and their names. Wouldn't it be more convenient to put all resulting .lib files in the same directory, and distinguishing between debug/release versions by name, e.g.: libboost_thread.lib // release libboost_thread_d.lib // debug libboost_threadmon.lib // release threadmon ... etc ... and, when the libraries support static linking of the CRT also: libboost_thread_static.lib libboost_thread_static_d.lib As it is now (Boost 1.27.0), it really is a bit awkward to use. Also, why not put all Boost library files in the same directory (e.g. BOOST_ROOT/lib) during build? Sorry if this topic already has been covered, I've been off the Boost lists for some time now. // Johan

The only compiler that doesn't bite it on the attached code (that I've tried) is GCC compiling as an EXE, so I'm sure my problem with compiling a DLL is environment related. Hi Jeff, I agree that latest problem is possibly an STL/environment problem specifically related to linking a DLL. An exe compiles and links fine. I'm only new to GCC and am using v2.95. I tried updating to the 3.0.4 libraries but that didn't seem to help any. Anyway, I only got into this bind because VC7 and VC6 both run into Internal Compiler Errors when trying to compile (only a select part) of the BGL. I got a work around from Microsoft for one compiler bug, made a fix to the BGL code to get past another, then hit yet another internal compiler error. Where does all this happen? Specifically with examples from the BGL text book including the edge connectivity example in section 8.2. I don't blame the BGL for the bugs in the VC compilers and I guess the remainder of my woes are most likely attributable to my inexperience with the other compilers/environments. It seems, however, that for the code I am tryng to compile atleast, that there is a hurdle at every corner! I'm scared that even if I do get something going Ok, the second I use a new template I'll be in uncharted territory again. Unfortunately I can't afford this kind of risk on a fast track project. Maybe when I have more time, I'll come back to the BGL and try again. Thank you for your kind response. Sure, I've compiled earlier versions of BGL with GCC (of course this proves little since we might have been using different parts). Hi, On two seperate Solaris 8 multi-processor machines (with sufficient RAM and swap space), the final archive command to create the library for reading/writing the dot format crashes with a segmentation fault: OBJS = graphviz_graph_lex.o graphviz_digraph_lex.o graphviz_digraph_parser.o graphviz_graph_parser.o libbgl-viz.a: $(OBJS) $(AR) -rc libbgl-viz.a $(OBJS) When I ran the 'ar -rc ..' command again prefixed with the 'truss' command, it crashed soon after loading the last .o file. Oddly enough, the archive command worked on a multi-processor Linux machine... Any diagnostics as to why the archive command doesn't work on the Solaris machines? Regards Rajesh

Hi, I've created a small framework I dubbed Virtual DataBase (VDB) which is in actuality a set of three classes which handle tables of data. table<DataT> Manages a random number of records of type DataT, including all memory management. view<DataT> Manages a sorted and/or filtered view of the records in a table. The filter and sort algorithms are supplied through functions or functors and is quite fast (though there's still room for improvement). tracker<DataT> Tracks a single record in a table. If the record is deleted, the tracker becomes invalid. That's basically it. It's built to be generic, simple and reusable. What are the chances of such a framework finding a place in the large Boost library? Currently everything seems to be working based on simple testcases but I'm still working on creating detailed testcases (using my own "Testkit" framework). regards, Martijn van der Lee

There is bug in bind1st.cpp example for boost::function library. Compiling Boost in VC++ .Net

Hello Boost Users, I am a newbie to the Boost Graph library and am trying to come up to speed with the use of the library as quickly as I can. Last week I thought that one of the best ways to do this would be to work through some of the example code in the Boost User Guide and Reference Manual but I was disappointed to find out that the moment I included some boost header files in my VC++ .Net project that I ran into a C1001 FATAL COMPILER ERROR. This problem doesn't occur in VC6 nor does it occur in the Borland 5.5 C++ compiler, however, my current project dictates that I use the VC++ .Net compiler. Before jumping on to this list with a posting I searched the archive and noticed that a previous posting had been lodged with the same compiler error. To cut a long story short I have been in touch with Microsoft Technical support (who were extremely helpful) and they have confirmed my issue (and that of the previous posting) to be a bug in the VC++ .Net compiler. Microsoft also gave me a work around for the problem so the main purpose of this posting is to make public the work around in order to use the BGL with the VC++ .Net compiler. As I am new to the BGL if anyone has any comments on the validity of the work around provided by Microsoft I would be grateful to hear them. Thanks for the response. Because this pattern involves a condition.wait() followed by select(), I believe that only the leader should be able to set the predicate to NO_CURRENT_LEADER. Otherwise there is the [very unlikely] danger that a spurious wake up on the condition could result a second thread attempting to process the same handle/event before the first thread could deactivate it. Although I can wait until all the housekeeping for the select() has been done before unguarding the condition and continue with processing the event, that's a little more synchronous than I care for given that a simple comparison against a thread id allows me to unguard the condition much earlier. Streamed input for rational, badbit vs failbit

Is there an error in the declaration of template <typename IntType> std::istream& operator>> (std::istream& is, rational<IntType>& r) in boost.hpp? The lines if (c != '/') is.clear(std::istream::badbit); appear in the function definition, as the format is num/den, so we expect a slash character. However, is setting the stream to bad correct? Shouldn't it be failbit instead? The standard states that badbit indicates a loss of integrity in an input or output sequence (such as an irrecoverable read error from a file); failbit indicates that an input operation failed to read the expected characters, or that an output operation failed to generate the desired characters. Also, to cite precedence from the standard, it stipulates that the std::complex type's extraction operator should call is.setstate(ios::failbit) if bad input is found. What is confusing, however, is that Stroustrup's example input operation for complex sets badbit (section 21.3.5 in the third edition of his bible). So who is right out of: me, rational.hpp, the C++ standard, Stroustrup? Is it more than two of these, and if so, where is my misunderstanding?

I think I'm not linking the boost libary. But I checked many times and can't find any error. I'm implementing the Leader/Followers thread pool pattern - reference "Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture Volume 2" (Schmidt, et al). When a thread is released via notify_one(), it is [assumed to be] in the "leader" role and stores it's id. A sanity check should be performed to verify that there is no other thread in the leader role (i.e., current_leader is "none") before the thread stores it's id there. When one of the event sources is signaled and the leader is unblocked, it must, among other tasks, demote itself (i.e., set the current_leader value to "none") and promote one of the followers by notify_one() before continuing to service the request. Because of the potential for race conditions, (especially in the context of future program updates, modifications, etc.) I should enforce the rule that only the leader can promote a follower. Something along the lines of: current_leader == Thread::this(). Dick, In general, condition variables (both the Boost.Threads version and the POSIX version) don't tell the "notifier" which thread woke up. That's not necessarily a problem, though. A thread pool usually implies a set of threads that are equivalent in some way, even running the same thread function. Referring to the example at: http://www.boost.org/libs/thread/doc/condition.html#Example, Take a look the the receive() function. while (buffered == 0) buffer_not_empty.wait(lk); You might have three threads which reach this point when buffered==0 (meaning the buffer is empty). When a new sender in a fourth thread adds something to the buffer and calls notify_one(), exactly one of the three threads waiting on the condition will wake up and do some work. You won't care which thread wakes up, because any one of them will be prepared to do the necessary work. Problem with File Dependency Example

Hi! (I'm a newbie to boost and English is not my native language) I changed the examples/file_dependencies.cpp from boost 1.0.27 a little bit and I think the output is wrong. The changed File is at http://www.ebx.de/qqq.cpp (just files_e, name and used_by are changed). The program printed "FF" and "GG" with the same time_slot, but they have an "Edge". With "#if 0" instead of "#if 1" on line 106 the result get even worse, "DD" has a lower time_slot than "GG", but "GG" depends on "DD". What is wrong? My code? Did I misuse the example? M.

On the Graph documentation it is shown an example showing how to get reverse Cuthill-McKee ordering. It uses rbegin() to get it. My question is: how to get the non-reverse Cuthill-McKee ordering. It still give the reverse ordering even after I use begin(). Did I do something wrong? Can someone advise me the correct one (with example, if possible). Erman

Is there a way to detect that a class has been derived from boost::addable<T>, for example? I would like to be able to write something like this: template <typename T> void foo() { //if T derived from boost::addable<T,...> // . . . } The problem, of course, is the base class chaining feature. I do not see how to use boost::is_base_and_derived in this case.

Tokenizer

I have a question about boost::tokenizer. I have a Semicolon separated string, something like: "All;;;;;;Bus;;;;;;BRT;;;;;;All" When I use boost tokenizer, I get "All", "Bus", "BRT",and "All". I want to get the the empty string between the semicolons, seems like the tokenizer takes consecutive semicolons as a single token; is there any way I can change this to represent different strings? boost::char_separator<char> sep(";"); typedef boost::tokenizer<boost::char_separator<char> > tokenizer; tokenizer Id_tokens(IdString, sep); for(tokenizer::iterator Id_tok_iter= Id_tokens.begin(), End_Id_tok_iter = Id_tokens.end(); Id_tok_Iter != End_Id_tok_iter) { //Do Something } Another question, is there some way to assign a different string once a tokenizer is constructed? tokenizer Id_tokens(IdString,sep); Id_tokens.assign(NewString,sep); //Is this possible with the boost tokenizer? Sun WorkShop assertion failed when compiling with -g

FYI, the following piece of code is an excerpt from boost/type_traits/composite_traits.hpp (boost version 1_27_0). Using sun's CC (Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 C++ 5.3. Patch 111685-05 2002/02/03) and debug on (-g), it fails compilation with the following message >> Assertion: (../links/dbg_cstabs.cc, line 611) while processing test.cpp at line 0. Non-scoped mutex's with Boost.Threads

suggestion: harness destructor in scoped_ptr<>::reset

Before I propose this to main boost mailing list, I wanted to see what others thought of this idea. I propose changing the following method on scoped_ptr<>: void reset(T* p=0) {if(ptr!=p) {checked_delete(ptr); ptr=p;}} to void reset(T* p=0) {if(ptr!=p) {scoped_ptr<T>(p).swap(*this);}} void swap(scoped_ptr<T>& other) {std::swap(ptr,other.ptr);} Of course, we would then have global methods for std::swap, as there are for the other smart pointers, to map to this method. Finally, the same change should be made to scoped_array<>. shared_ptr<> and shared_array<> already have these semantics. The idea is to harness the destructor of the scoped_ptr in order to delete the pointer, rather than calling checked_delete in two places. This has a few advantages over the old code: 1- destruction is handled in one place, the destructor. This seems natural, and gives developers one place to look to see what happens when a pointer is deleted 2- I have had occasion to specialize the destructor of the scoped_ptr<> class to do something other than delete. In that case, I needed to specialize the destructor AND the reset method. With this change, one would only need to specialize the destructor and reset would harness that specialization as well. Comments?

How to build boost to get proper boost::regex configuration?

I've build boost on Windows NT4.0 with following settings: JAM_TOOLSET=VISUALC TOOLS=msvc and until now everything works fine. But when I tried to use boost::regex library I found that I got wrong libraries: I got libboost_regex.lib in four directories: 1) libs\regex\build\bin\libboost_regex.dll\msvc\debug 2) libs\regex\build\bin\libboost_regex.dll\msvc\release 3) libs\regex\build\bin\libboost_regex.lib\msvc\debug\runtime-link- dynamic 4) libs\regex\build\bin\libboost_regex.lib\msvc\debug\runtime-link- dynamic but now when I try to use boost::regex library file regex_library_include.hpp forecs linking against library with name like vc6-re300l.lib. Is there a way to get proper libraries when boost is built or to force compiler to use libboost_regex.lib during linking? Thank you in advance. Best regards Ryszard Niewisiewicz

BTW I also had to update the Jamrules for msvc, such that I had to change the prog names "cl", "link" to "cl.exe" and "link.exe" respectively. For some reason, I have to specify the extension to run a program. Does not work without it. I am NOT doing this through a cygwin shell.

I just downloaded the latest version on the web site. I've never really used CVS before, but I tried to grab what appeared to be all the relevant files for type_traits. Now, when I try to use boost::function, I get all this: /usr/local/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:151: parse error before `>' token /usr/local/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:153: template argument 1 is invalid /usr/local/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:153: `type' is not a class or namespace /usr/local/include/boost/function/function_base.hpp:153: ISO C++ forbids declaration of `type' with no type Which points to a line that contains is_stateless<>, which I assume is part of type_traits. So, could someone, in simple terms that a 5-year-old could understand, tell me how to get the latest version of type_traits from CVS? hi, i d/l'ed the 1_27_0 and have successfully built the jam executable. i went through the documentation for build but am still unclear as to the location from where jam should be run. do i just copy jam into the top level directory where the files were extracted to and run it from there after setting BOOST_ROOT? some posts in this list conveyed the impression that it should be run from within the source library for each library. i find that confusing. isn't it the intent(?) of jam to be able to build the code wherever it may be located provided that the appropriate entry has been made into BOOST_BUILD_PATH/BOOST_ROOT? i apologize since this post is probably somewhat off-topic. sincerely, abhishek.

I have a hunch that this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find the answer. I have a struct similar to: struct MyStruct { int i; char c; }; And a functor similar to: struct MyFunctor { void operator()(int i) { //Do something with i } }; Given a container of MyStruct objects, how can I use iterator_adaptor to use MyStruct::i with MyFunctor? Something like: std::vector<MyStruct> v; std::for_each(v.begin(), v.end(), MyFunctor()); I have overridden the dereference method in default_iterator_policies to return the integer, but am at a bit of a loss where to go from here. Why is BOOST_NO_SWPRINTF defined for VC++ 6.0 in the config\compiler\visualc.hpp ? There most certainly is a swprintf in the header files. Is there something wrong with it in VC6 ? If I can't use it in some Boost code which I am modifying slightly for my own purpose, is there something else I can use ?

I noticed that the function declaration of lexical_cast is: template<typename Target, typename Source> Target lexical_cast(Source arg) Namely that arg is a copy of the original source. Is there a specific reason that a copy is made? Why isn't it a 'const Source&' instead? --

Threads on Carbon

Hi, I downloaded the boost threads, and I can't get it to work on Mac OS Classic 9.1. Does the threads only work in Mac OS X or should it work here in Mac OS Classic (with Carbon)? Best Regards -- Emil Edeholt

Hi, there: regex_grep_example_3.cpp is the example source file in the boost/regex library. I find a bug at line 92 : boost::regex_grep(std::bind1st(std::mem_fun (&class_index::grep_callback), this), start, end, expression); where "mem_fun" should be "mem_fun1". ps:I use MSVC6.0 on Micro$oft win2k.
