index(*vi) in the BGL quick tour?

Hi, My IDE is VC++6.0. I'm on win2k, using boost 1.29.0. I'm trying to get the quick tour (BOOST_HOME/libs/graph/doc/quick_tour.html) of the graph library to compile, but am experiencing a problem. In the example on how to invoke Dijkstra's algorithm, it seems we're calling a function index(*vi). I'm guessing it's supposed to get the node number for the node at vertex_iterator vi. The problem is that my compiler can't find the function ('index' : undeclared identifier). Doing a manual 'search in files' doesn't reveal any legible candidates either. Is this an error in the docs or am I missing something bigger here? kind regards, Dieter Vrancken

spirit framework...

I understand that the spirit compiler framework has been accepted as part of boost. Does anyone know when it will be part of the standard boost distribution. I'm finding that spirit 1.5.1 generally works on Mac OS X using CodeWarrior, but that I'm experiencing runtime assertions running some of the examples. In particular the ast_xml example. Problem with tuples::ignore

I'm sure I've seen posts about this, but have been unable to track it down... Apparently gcc 3.2 only uses the cpp file name to "anonymize" anonymous namespaces. My problem is that Application A links libs B and C, which both have files named foo.cpp. These foo.cpp's both include boost/tuples/details/tuple_basic.hpp, thus causing duplicate symbols of tuples::{anonymous}::ignore. Obviously I can work around this by renaming the cpp files, but I thought I'd see if there was a quicker solution. uBLAS: reference to container data & iteratordeclaration

Hi, *) First question: I am trying to get a reference to data of a container in the following way: matrix<double> m(3,3); vector<double>& v(m.column(2)); But this seems not to be possible. Is there a way to achieve this behaviour? What I basically want to achive is having functor object that holds a reference to a row/column of my container matrix. >From my questions about argument types I know that m.column(2) is a kind of an expression. How can I get the underlying reference to data if there even is one? *) Second question: matrix<double> m(10,3); ... fill the matrix ... matrix<double>::iterator it; // wrong this does not work!! for (it = m.column(2).begin(); it != m.colum(2).end(); ++it) { cout << *it << " " << foo(*it) << endl; } How would I declare my iterator? I understand when I use std::library-algorithms the automatic template parameter defer will give me the correct type from begin(). But in my case how should I declare the iterator? thread problems with Java JNI

A simple test program using boost::thread works fine, but when I try to use boost::thread in a DLL library which is called from a Java thread, the thread blocks forever in the constructor for boost::thread. Looking at the source code for boost::thread, I see that it blocks on a condition waiting for the thread to start. Maybe the thread never starts? So. I modified my code to use _beginthreadex() directly to start my worker thread. I hoped to at least get a better idea of what was going wrong, but the code worked flawlessly. Are there known problems with using boost::thread from a DLL? Any other ideas? Thanks, Justin Michel

boost-build path discrepancies

As per my recent post "Installing boost libs for dependant apps," I recently used the boost-build system for my own apps make setup. I found it to be very powerful and useful (more than I could use to begin with). I used the version 1 build system becuase it looked like it would be easier to get up and running, but plan to migrate to v2 soon since it is more powerful and I much prefer the dependency handling of adding sub-projects by name, not path to a Jamfile. But I need to learn it first. I did this on RedHat 8.0 using gcc 3.2.2 with a cut of the Boost CVS from 2/6/2003 on the Boost-Build v1.30.0. I copied most of the main files (features.jam, boost-build.jam, etc) from the main boost build setup in BOOST_ROOT and BOOST_ROOT/tools/build. I ran into two issues with pathing and another with the LinkLibraries rule. I tried a couple of approaches to including externally built libraries to my build hierarchy (several sub-project libs and one app). When I tried LinkLibraries it didn't complain, but the library never got added to my link action in the NEEDLIBS variable. I tried tracing it down and added Echo actions to the LinkLibraries to see what it was adding, which was nothing, but I could have mis-understood the NEEDLIBS on $(<) expression. Regardless, they did not appear in the list of libs passed to the linker. I then tried the <libraryfile> feature in my requirements section. That worked fine. So, is LinkLibraries deprecated (the docs did not mention it that I could find)? I had it first in my list, before my exe target, but in the same file. Was it supposed to go after? I liked LinkLibraries better than the <libraryfile> since it would do the name mangling for me (prefix="lib", suffix=".so" under gcc). The other problem I ran into revolved around use of relative paths and I believe my results are counter to what the documentation claims. First, when I added dependant libraries as source entries in my exe target the docs claim I can make those paths absolute. My setup is a little out of the norm in that my app is at the leaf node of the directory tree, so the relative path to the main lib it needed was $(DOTDOT). However, I have several libs common to other apps, but in the same boost build hierarchy, so those are relative to $(BOOST_ROOT). When I tried having a source line: <lib>$(BOOST_ROOT)/Common/CommonLib from within my Jamfile located at $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib/Server The output when I tried bjam was: (|ServerLib|Server|home|michael|Proj|Common) not found (I am only sure of the folder part of that, the exact error syntax may be slightly off). I had to specify the paths as: $(DOTDOT)/$(DOTDOT)/Common/CommonLib In the second case, it was relative pathing that wouldn't work. I specified most of the common features and settings using template targets that I then imported into each Jamfile (Very nice feature). The one of concern was located in the $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib folder. In the $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib/Server/Jamfile I added a requirement: <include>$(DOTDOT) To get back to ServerLib which it depends on. I swear that worked the first time I got it built, but last night when I did a rebuild all (bjam -a) it failed and claimed it could not find include files. I ended up having to change it to absolute pathing to work. Are the docs wrong on the two pathing issues? Is there something I could be setting up wrong to get the behavior I saw? thanks. michael

installing boost libs for dependant apps

I just completed porting our server from XP to Linux, which uses Boost::Thread for the threading library. I found it was infinitely more convenient to publish the libs in their various formats (variant|sub-variant) into a common, top-level folder under BOOST_ROOT. This made it much more managable to both link it into my application (without having to grist the folder name) and add the proper path to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH env var so it could find the shared libraries when I ran. I don't know if there is a prescribed way of doing this already in place, but I did not see anything in the build documentation (like bjam "Install [folder]" or some such). I ended up modifying the BOOST_ROOT/Jamfile to have a stage target that published all the threading libs to BOOST_ROOT/bin with proper suffixes for the variants I cared about (debug and release for the moment). I still had to append the proper suffixes in my own Jamfile (I used BJam for my make as well), but it was a heck of a lot better than a 10 deep folder hierarchy. I have a couple of question and two requests. For reference I am using a cut from CVS around 2/6/2003. How are others doing this sort of thing that are using Boost? Is there a common way to do what I did by doctoring the Jamfile that is less invasive (so I don't have to repeat in the future when I get releases from CVS)? I am new to Linux & Boost, so may not know how I should be getting at these things. My request, if the answers to the above don't address them, is that some form of install or publish to a common location be added to the boost build. If I were more intimately familiar with Boost and the build system (and the various installation platforms) I would volunteer to help, but... My second request may also already be possible, but my limited experiment and reading made it seem not. I'd like to be able to declare a sub-project that points to a whole other boost-build.jam hierarchy; e.g. I want to make Boost a sub-project of mine. This seems much more plausible and likely in the new versoin 2 format where the dependency declarations are more straight-forward (by name, not explicit path). I await your feedback. Thanks. michael

I have built the boost::signals library with C++Builder 6 Pro Update 4 and am running into problems: a) We tend to use double word alignment, not quad word (which is the default in C++Builder). Using Unit Tests w/Codewarrior Pro 8.3

Folks, I'd like to be able to run a boost unit test, e.g. is_convertible_test.cpp, as kind of a one-shot apart from having to deal with the rest of boost. So I read the documentation on the unit test framework, and it seems like this should be relatively straightforward. I've created a Carbon Console project in Codewarrior, which contains the following files: is_convertible_test.cpp init.cpp (from type_traits/test) unit_test_main.cpp unit_test_suite.cpp unit_test_result.cpp unit_test_log.cpp unit_test_monitor.cpp execution_monitor.cpp unit_test_parameters.cpp test_tools.cpp This all compiles and links file, which is a relief in and of itself. :-) However, when I simply run the app, I get "*** No errors detected". If I remove is_convertible_test.cpp and rebuild and run again, I get the same result. :-) So my suspicion is that I need to do more to let the framework know that it needs to run is_convertible_test.cpp. Can someone please clue me in as to what that is, in minimal terms? shared_ptr 1.27 w/gcc 2.96 (VxWorks)

We are using boost 1.27 (I know, I know) with the real-time operating system VxWorks, which ships with its own "special" version of gcc 2.96 (not that same as Red Hats - I know, I know). Today I finally got around to providing a version of atomic_count.hpp for VxWorks. I had to play some games with #defines to get BOOST_HAS_THREADS and all the other things set up right before my implementation would get chosen. Once that was squared away, I put a cout in the constructor of my atomic_count class just be sure it was all working. I then stamped down a shared_ptr<int> and much to my surprise: no text output. I traced it back to the constructor for counted_base_impl (a templated class). That constructor was being called, but it inherits from counted_base, and that constructor was just not getting called! I searched your bug list on source forge but found no mention of this. But then again, its not really a boost bug! I then took a look at boost 1.29 and noticed that lots of things had been reworked in this area, so now looks like the reason to start using 1.29. I'm afraid I am stuck with VxWorks and that compiler though... So I'm just throwing this out in case anyone is remotely in the same situation as we are. I will start using 1.29 and see what happens. Hopefully its not too hard to customize the OS specific part in 1.29. I also suggest a note get added to the shared_ptr documentation about this OS specific mutex stuff thats going on. I got curious about how that was done and decided to look. Had I not done this, my shared_ptr's reference count would not have been thread safe and I wouldn't have known this. Also, is there a "what has changed in this new version of boost" file somewhere? Thanks again everyone. BN

Martin, I did a simple search through the Boost website, and on http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/using_adjacency_list.htm, I found this: You can also use enum's instead of struct's to create tag types. Create an enum type for each property. The first part of the name of the enum type must be edge, vertex, or graph followed by an underscore, with a _t at the end. Inside the enum, define a value with the same name minus the _t. [BGL] Preconditioned color maps?

In an algorithm I'm working on I need to do an undirected_dfs using a visitor for analysis. I know my starting vertex, and I also want the DFS to skip one of the starting vertex's adjacent vertices (i.e. don't proceed in the "direction" from the starting vertex). Example: d-e-f / a-b-c \ g-h-i Starting vertex is 'c' and I want to eliminate the "d-e-f" branch, so the DFS finds "c-b-a" and "c-g-h-i". My first idea was to set up a vertex color map, and set the color to black for vertex 'd' in the example above, but that doesn't do much good as the undirected_dfs sets all colors to white initially. My second thought was to feed the vertex I want to eliminate and the vertex color map to my dfs_visitor implementation, something like: discover_vertex(u, g) { if (u == blocked) { vertex_colormap[u] = black; } } Will the latter approach work satisfactory? If not, is there some other way which I can use to precondition the color maps used in the BGL algorithms? Thanks, -- Tarjei

Part of the problem actually comes from whether the products are accumulated into a register by the compiler, or whether they are accumulated into memory. If accumulated into a 387 register it has higher-precision before it is rounded back down to 64-bits to be stored into memory. If the compiler generates code to accumulate the products directly into memory then the results of each individual product are rounded to 64-bits at every iteration and the result will be slightly less accurate. GCC 3.2 compiler error using Boost::Threads::Mutex::scoped_lock

Disclaimer: I am relatively new to gcc, linux and Boost. I'm hoping someone out in the group who is much more knowledgable about all of them can help me get past a hurdle in code I am porting from Windows. I am getting a vague error message from g++ (gcc 3.2-7 under Redhat Linux 8.0) in my code using the Boost scoped_lock. I have wrapped the Boost versions of mutex and mutex::scoped_lock as: class PMutex { public: PMutex() {} virtual ~PMutex() {} protected: boost::mutex m_Mutex; friend class PScopedLock; }; class PScopedLock { public: explicit PScopedLock( PMutex& M ) : m_ScopedLock(M.m_Mutex) {} virtual ~PScopedLock() {} static PScopedLock* Create( PMutex& M ) { return (PScopedLock*) ::new PScopedLock(M); } void Destroy( void ) { delete this; } protected: void* operator new(size_t) {} // disallowed, must declare on the stack boost::mutex::scoped_lock m_ScopedLock; friend class PCondition; }; The error is "ISO C++ forbids declarations of 'type name' with no type". I get that error on several lines, but most notably on a simple declaration like: PScopedLock Lock(MyMutex); From what little I can find on the newsgroups, this sort of error has been noted when use of template template parameters are not declared quite correctly (without the trailing ::template from what I can gather). But as far as I can tell, I should not be having that issue. I am not knowledgeable enough about templates, Boost or gcc/g++ to sort out what I am running into. Boost builds fine under gcc, the code I am porting compiles fine under MSVC6 and Kylix3, but not gcc. Can anyone help me out? thanks. michael

Has anyone compiled Boost successfully on OS390?

Hi, I am trying to get boost compiled on OS390. Has anyone done it successfully so far? The compiler on OS390(version2 release10) is complaining of empty template parameter. Exporting references into boost::python

A newbie question regarding boost::python. I need to make a templatized function that returns a boost::python::object containing a reference to an object I already have. Basically: template<class T> object convertToPython (T &obj) { return object (obj) } All classes I pass through T are already wrapped (they are also not copy-constructible). I tried with the code found at python.orgs wiki: template<class T> T& identity(T& x) { return x; } template<class T> object get_object_reference (T& x) { object f = make_function (&identity<T>, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object()); return f(x); } this code gave me a compile error (on CW 8.3, Mac OS X). Apparently CW is convinced that the &identity<T> maps to void. I then tried to hardcode a type just to see if it worked at all: InputManager &identity (InputManager &x) { return x; } object get_object_reference (InputManager &x) { object f = make_function ( &identity, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object()); return f(x); } This compiled, but gave me a typeerror at runtime: (No to_python (by-value) converter found for c++ type: InputManager) I've seccesfully wrapped functions like this: InputManager &GetInputManager(); BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE (Engine) { def ( "GetInputManager", &GetInputManager, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object() ); } So it should be able to work. VC7 says 'fatal C1067' compiling multi_array?

Greetings: I'm using VC7 and boost_1_29_0 to compile this code that is using multi_array.hpp. typedef boost::multi_array<double, 4> theta4_t; typedef theta4_t::index index; theta4_t Theta_Trun( boost::extents[10000][2][10][256] ); I'm receiving this error: "fatal error C1067: compiler limit: debug information module size exceeded" Of course, the code compiles fine using the "Release" configuration, but I need the "Debug" one also. Is there a workaround for this, other than the 'make your variables shorter' suggested in the VC7 documentation? Thanks, -Clift

Hi! If someone wants to contribute code to boost: Is she required to provide the names of all namespaces lowercase? E.g. someone provides Elefant, the big library. Is she allowed to have namespace Elefant and perhaps namespace Elefant::Private, etc. I could not find any hint except this here, which did not really help me, since I do not know the standard library's conventions. Any link/ hint appreciated: -- citation from the boost docs -- "Naming conventions rationale The C++ standard committee's Library Working Group discussed this issue in detail, and over a long period of time. The discussion was repeated again in early boost postings. A short summary: Naming conventions are contentious, and although several are widely used, no one style predominates. poisson_distribution header file

Hi, I am using boost_1_29_0 to implement random distribution functions. The standard download included implementation of uniform, normal and exponential distributions - and they work great. I also need an implementation of poisson distribution, and I have noticed that poisson_distribution.hpp was added to CVS last October. I got the file, and put it into the boost/random/ directory, with the other random distribution files. However, when I try using poisson distribution, I get a series of 0's instead of a series of random numbers, although I'm using it exactly the same way as with the other distributions. I am not sure whether the problem is due to incorrect installation of the new file, or due to bugs in the implementation. I tried cleaning the boost_1_29_0 directory, and running bjam again, but still no luck. Is there anything else I should do to include this new header file? Any help would be greatly appreciated. NDEBUG, affects floating point math?

I'm getting some seriously strange problems with regard to numerical accuracy when computing matrix products that depends on whether or not NDEBUG is defined when I compile. I wrote a small piece of C code to calculate a symmetric-matrix by row-matrix product by directly accessing the memory (which btw is about 1000% faster than ublas's generated code with gcc 3.2.3 and -O3, why is ublas so slow?) And when I compile with -DNDEBUG the results differ by around +/- 1e-16, but when its not defined the results match almost perfectly. Is there something strange going on with regard to FPU control words or types or anything? I'm using type double btw. I am trying to find a good choice for argument types to a function. (Please be patient, I am a poor user of C++ who has not yet understood all this expression template magic.) I'd like to have a function: void foo( whattype arg) { } matrix<double> m(3,3); vector<double> v(6); and call it like: foo(m.column(0)); foo(m.row(0)); foo(v); Is this feasible? Should I use iterators for whattype? (how do I access size information then?) Am I trying to misuse the ublas when asking such a question? (Which container should I use in this case?) Building with Sun Workshop 6

I've searched the archives, and haven't found a report of successfully building Boost using the Sun Workshop compiler, though some messages imply that people are using at least some of the libraries with Workshop. Although I realize we could build the libraries with gcc, we have quite a few projects set up in the workshop environment, and I'd like to have the option to use Boost libraries with them. Obviously nobody has built an appropriate toolset. In my naive attempts to create a toolset definiton, and in trying to create a static library from components like Date-Time library, I get error messages like: add_const.hpp, line 34: Warning: Too few arguments in macro BOOST_PP_CHECK_2. There are also errors involving BOOST_PP_LIST_FOR_EACH_I_M (among others). Can anyone offer me hints on how to get started in resolving these? Ultimately I'd like to have the whole suite compiled, but for the time being I'd be happy just using Date-Time. I'm willing to build a toolset file for this compiler, but I don't seem to have the expertise. If there's anyone that is able to provide guidance, I can put some time into this, and submit a toolset definition file so others can use Boost with this compiler.

I browsed the uBLAS library and played a little bit with it but I didn't find a routine for matrix inversion. Is there any possibility to preform it in a single step? date_time problems

I'm trying to test the date_time functionality of boost and am having some difficulties. I would like to simply get the current local time into a ptime and write it out as an ISO-8601 string. Using Boost 1.29 and g++ 3.2, when I compile the following code I get a number of *linker* errors. Is implicit casting with boost::any possible?

I'm curious if there's any way to get code like the following to work: boost::any a = char(10); int i = boost::any_cast<int>(a); More specifically, what I mean is, I'd like to be able to place a value of type T1 in 'a' and then retrieve it as type T2 which it can be implicitly cast to. Is this possible without the part that extracts the value from 'a' adding a lot of extra code to test all possibilities? What I would like to do is fill a map<string, any> with function pointers/objects/etc. and pass it to a function which casts the any values to slot types to connect to different signals whose type is determined at runtime. C++ object from PyObject pointer

However, now another C++ function is receiving a pointer to a PyObject that represents an instance of this "boosted" python class. [BGL] Using external edge properties

I have a graph which might change during it's lifetime. I want to attach external properties to this graph. Now, it seems like that in order to be able to attach external properties, I need to have an internal property with edge indices, ie that enumerates the edges. These indices need to be continuous as I gather, since they are used to index for instance a vector of num_edges() elements. Does this mean that I have to re-enumerate all edges if I remove one? This seems to me very cumbersome and also time consuming if the graph is large and changes a lot. Is there another way? Björn Lindberg

Can one "nest" regular expressions ?

Hello folks, I believe my question applies to regular expression libraries generally and not just to regexp++. I want to know if it is possible to refer to or use one regular expression within another. What I wish to do is parse a string of html code for img tags, and if they have the clause ALT="whatever" replace the whole image tag with 'whatever'. So I decided to make regular expression for an image tag which had an ALT part, and have a sub-match on the contents of quoted part of the ALT. (I broke this up a bit, explaining what each part is for . . .) This will match img tags: static const boost::regex find_imgs(" <\\s*img Matches <, 0 or many whitespace, IMG \\s+src\\s* Matches 1 or more whitespace, SRC, 0 or many whitespace =\\s* Matches = followed by 0 or more whitespace \"\\s* Matches " followed by 0 or more whitespace ([^\"]*) Matches any number of characters that are not " ([^>]*>) Matches any number of chars that not >, followed by a > ", boost::regbase::normal | boost::regbase::icase); Ok, so now look at this one. But it seems to make it so much easier if it were possible, especially leaving me with fewer lines of regular expression code to have bugs in. If this is possible I'd like to know. Testing Boost:threads on windows w/ cygwin/gcc help

Howdy, I have cygwin running on a WinXP box and am trying to get the threads up and running. I built the Boost.Threads and things look good. Then I try: "bjam -sTOOLS=gcc test" from the /lib/thread/test directory and the test fails with: <build> ...found 1203 targets... ...using 1 temp target... ...updating 181 targets... ...using <libs!thread!test/test_thread.test/gcc/debug/runtime-link-static/threa ding-multi>test_thread.run... succeeded-test-file ../../../libs/thread/test/bin/test_thread.test/gcc/debug/runtime-link- static/threading-multi/test_thread.test Syntax error: "fi" unexpected (expecting "then") <chomp/> echo "*" echo "***************** failed above test: test_thread ********************" echo "*" </build> My question is, how do I correctly get Boost to use either native or pthreads and pass the tests above? I've checked the FAQs, Googled and all that, but can't seem to find an answer. I'm sure it's easy, but can't get it right. thanks Sam

boost::mutex, Borland C++Bulder 6 and CodeGuard

I have been running into CodeGuard problems using boost 1.29.0 with BorlandC++Builder 6Pro update 2 and CodeGuard. The test project is a console app, multi-threading but no vcl (don't know if the VCL enabled affects it or not). The code is #include <boost/thread/mutex.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::mutex m; return 0; } I get a resource type mismatch on exit which is down to the mutes. I have linked directly with the source and found where the problem lies. It could be down to 2 places: a) boost allocates the mutex (mutex.cpp line 39) using the nowthrow operator new m_mutex = reinterpret_cast<void*>(new(std::nothrow) CRITICAL_SECTION); and then deletes it using the standard delete (mutex.cpp line 48) delete reinterpret_cast<LPCRITICAL_SECTION>(m_mutex); This causes slight problems as codeguard treats allocations from new and malloc differently to check you free the memory correctly. nothrow new uses malloc, so a standard delete is the incorrect way to free the mutex here from CodeGuards point of view. I have changed the delete to operator delete (reinterpret_cast<LPCRITICAL_SECTION>(m_mutex), std::nothrow); which calls the nothrow version of delete. Unfortunately, the next part of the problem: b) For some reason, the mutex is using the roguewave stl new.h which defines the nothrow operators as such (oldstl\new.h line 143) inline void * _RTLENTRY operator new (size_t size, const std::nothrow_t &nt) { size = size ? size : 1; return malloc(size); } (oldstl\new.h line 152) inline void _RTLENTRY operator delete (void *v, const std::nothrow_t &nt) { ::operator delete (v); // The standard operator doesn't throw any exceptions } Here, there is a conflict in the allocation and deallocation. changing line 154 to free(v); along with the change to mutex to use the nothrow version of delete fixes it so codeguard can be used. Looking in the stlport new, it forces us to use RogueWave's new because of these lines in stlport\new line 49 # if !defined (_STLP_NO_NEW_NEW_HEADER) # include _STLP_NATIVE_CPP_RUNTIME_HEADER(new) # else # include <new.h> # endif which makes it include roguewaves version of new. So C++Builder 6 is still reliant on roguewave stl even when set to use STLPort. Possible solutions are a) Make boost::thread use nothrow version of delete but this requires a fix in the borland/rogue wave header for the delete to make it use free. or b) mutex could use malloc and free directly for borland. Which would people prefer or can anyone think of another solution? Cheers Russell

Boost::Threads condition variable on Win32 and IO completion routines

The start of the do_wait() method of a boost::condition (in 1.29.0) for Win32 looks like this void condition::do_wait() { int res = 0; res = WaitForSingleObject(reinterpret_cast<HANDLE>(m_queue), INFINITE); assert(res == WAIT_OBJECT_0); This waits indefinitely until m_queue is signalled. Would it be safe to change this so the thread is alertable for IO completion routines? Something like int res = 0; while ((res = WaitForSingleObjectEx(reinterpret_cast<HANDLE>(m_queue), INFINITE, true)) == WAIT_IO_COMPLETION) { } assert (res == WAIT_OBJECT_0); We make fairly heavy use of Waitable Timers in our statemachines. The completion routine for a timer is called back in the context of the thread that started it, when the thread is alertable. WaitForSingleObject doesn't allow the thread to be alertable. We currently use this in our own thread (with Windows events) but are looking to update the message queue code and thread code to use boost. With out this change, it would currently break a lot of code if we were to use condition variables. Thanks Russell

Crash with regex, setlocale() return 0 on CW

The following code on line 841 of c_regex_traits.cpp in the regex library caused a crash when I used it in CodeWarrior 8.1 under OSX: std::string l(std::setlocale(LC_CTYPE, 0)); Afaict the crash was caused by setlocale() returning 0. I didn't want to use the C++ locale since it doesn't even provide the basic 0x00-0xFF unicode case mapping that's built into the C locale (due to limited locale support in CW I guess). A question on use of the matrix and vector classes: Should I: matrix<double> foo(const matrix<double> a) { matrix >double> r; ... return r; } or void foo(matrix<double>& r, const matrix<double> a) { ... } In other words: is it expensive to construct the temporary in case one? As I understand, the class would need an underlying 'copy on write' to be cheap, similar as strings do. I tried, to answer this question from the documentation, but sorry I did not get through. Firstly, apologies if this is a FAQ. What is the current status of boost::threads on Solaris 2.6 using the Forte 6u1 (5.2) compiler? Is this a "supported" platform/compiler combination. If it "kind of works", are there any known issues which I will need to code around, or is it completely broken. Is the issue with the Solaris pthreads or with the broken compiler? Does the compiler work well enough to be able to compile just the threads module. I'm looking for a threading abstraction portable to at least GCC/Linux, MSVC/Win32 and Forte/Solaris. Is boost::threads likely to be able to satisfy this requirement right now, or am I going to have to look elsewhere. If I do need to look elsewhere, can anyone recommend an alternative to paying large amounts of money away to Rogue Wave! Hope someone can help, regards, Gary

problem with induced subgraphs

I'm using an edge visitor to create subgraphs. I do a simple sub_graph = myGraph.create_subgraphs(), to create a subgraph and then I add vertices using add_vertex(vertex,sub_graph). The vertices are added but the corresponding edges are not. boost::thread and MinGW

Hi, I was previously using the threading library with MinGW (latest release version) with no problems. Yesterday I came across a segfault that occurred when accessing a shared pointer so I updated the boost-cvs version I was using to see if it was a known problem that had been fixed; however when attempting to build the new version it appeared that threading had been disabled for MinGW? Is this the case or is it a problem with the way I'm building my code. Any help greatly appreciated, Russ

[BGL] Strange result with internal graph properties

Rather, the actual vertex property that is added to the graph points to vertex_type, and the vertex_index /also/ points to the vertex_type! Now the strange thing: I have been running this and using all of the vertex properties, including vertex_index, without any problems, but when I noticed this, and tried setting the last template parameter of vertex_property to vertex_index instead I get segmentation faults. regex_match() Division By Zero

I am using boost::regex (1.29.0) under MSVC++ 6.0. Whenever I call regex_match(), I get: "Unhandled exception in filename.exe: 0xC0000094: Integer Divide by Zero." I have tried various ways to make the call (including the snippets posted on www.boost.org) Even this simple example fails: regex expression("abc"); cmatch what; if ( regex_match("xyz", what, expression) ) { // Whatever ... } Breakpoints reveal that after expression is set, the value of _expression_len is still 0. So when regex_match() is called, it in turn sends the value of expression.size() (which is just _expression_len) to re_detail::_priv_match_data(), which sends this value to estimate_max_state_count(). Then estimate_max_state_counts(), which calls this value "states", does the following: states *= states; // and later ... if(dist > (difference_type)(lim / states)) Since states is 0, this last expression causes division by 0, and the resulting exception. In case my environment matters, I am building my program under MSVC++ 6.0, running with boost_regex.dll. I am defining BOOST_REGEX_NO_LIB and BOOST_REGEX_USE_CPP_LOCALE, and linking in boost_regex.lib. What am I doing wrong? Glover Barker

boost::bind/function and C function pointers

Apologies if this topic has already been discussed. I have looked around on various mailing lists, in addition I have tried to make it work with the current C++ STL standard with std::mem_fun and std::bind1st but with no success. The problem is basically to bind a member function pointer with an instance of its declaring class and to assign the result to an existing C library function that expects a C style function pointer. This certainly works for ordinary C functions and static C++ functions, however fails for bound member function pointers. Here is what I am trying to achieve: #include <boost/bind.hpp> // C function declared in some library struct E; extern void setCallBack(void (*callback_fct)(E*)); class A { public: void init(); void callBack(E *e); .... }; void A::init() {setCallBack(boost::bind(&A::callBack, this));} void A::callBack(E *e) {...} I tried also using the STL calls, but without success either: ... setCallBack(std::bind1st(std::mem_fun(&A::callBack), this)); I like the elegant approach of boost::bind and would like to use it for this case. The workaround would be to declare a static function and to store the instance somewhere to access the other members of the A instance - but I'd prefer the other way if there is a solution to make it work. BTW, I am using gcc v 3.2 on Linux/i386 - but I guess that this is a more general problem than a specific compiler issue. Compiling the BGL-Graphviz library: libbgl-viz.a

The source code that should be able to produce this library is in directory "boost_1_29_0/libs/graph/src". In running the Makefile, the following error is produced: /bin/mv graphviz_parser.tab.h graphviz_parser.h /bin/mv: cannot stat `graphviz_parser.tab.h': No such file or directory. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

boost::function2's copy constructor expensive - why?

Hi! Today's profiling of my code (which massively uses boost::function to collect formulas) showed that boost::function2' copy constructor is called zillions of times. OK, I disabled inlining to get some more details, but this I do not understand. The functors are created, stored in an array and do not get copied again, but rather referenced there. Before I dig in that code: where do those copies come from? Is that the normal behaviour triggered ny operator() or is that a hint that I use them the wrong way? Any experience? At present the boost::function overhead kills my application. Tuning tipps? best regards, Markus

Under the stable build a library libboost_thread.lib is created to staticly link in to my project, with seperate libs if I am using the DLL STL or static STL. That build config is gone in the latest version under CVS, replaced by a boost_thread dll set up. I want (and need) the old static version. I have successfully added it back into the jam file so that all 3 (including the threadmon) are built now, but that isn't something I really want to have to maintain as I get updates. Is the static lib intentionally and permanently removed or is it an oversight/temporary change? thanks.

BGL: cycles in undirected graph

(Disclaimer: My knowledge of graph theory isn't too broad, so have me excused if this is completely trivial...) I'm struggling a bit with finding cycles in an undirected graph. Doing a DFS/BFS and recording back edges, thus detecting the number of cycles and a connected vertex pair for each one is simple enough. However, I'd also like to find the sequence(s) of vertices that make up the cycle. There's and example in the book that does this, but relies on a graph with direction in the second step where a DFS is done from both back-edge vertices and the results intersected. This won't work in the case of an undirected graph as every vertex is reachable from any other (if there's only one "connected component"), so I would just end up with the complete set of vertices in every case. My idea is to use BFS and the record_predecessors visitor, but I can't seem to wrap my head around how to find the sequence of vertices connecting the cycle(s) from this. Could anyone offer some pointers? (hopefully not NULL :) ) Regards, -- Tarjei

I have a library that depends on boost and is built with bjam. It puts sepearate targets in $(BAYES_ROOT)/target/bin/libBayesFilter.a/gcc/release/runtime-link-dynamic/libBayesFilter.a and the other debug directory as well. I am also working on a library using the same system that must link with libBayesFilter. My question is, how do I specify the library dependency on BayesFilter properly without having to specify the complete path to the target directory (which will change depending on the build features specified). I tried <lib>$(BAYES_ROOT)/BayesFilter/BayesFilter but it dies with: unknown dependent target <IdentityTest!/!home!stephenc!cvs!Bayes++!BayesFilter>libBayesFilter.a Am i missing something? -- Stephen

Conflict with winapi.hpp and windows.h (manifested in ACE)

Intel C++ 7.0 for Windows, STLPort 4.5.3, boost 1.29, ACE 5.3 Intel was warning a bunch of bad code in my source base, so I turned on warnings as errors, then I hit a problem where ACE was calling InitializeCriticalSection with a pointer to its typedef of CRITICAL_SECTION, and it was using the declaration of InitializeCriticalSection in winapi.hpp. Turns out, in the standard (by my interpretation), section 7.5/6 that if you put an extern "C" declaration in a namespace, its also accessible by ::. The call failed because boost::detail::winapi::critical_section != CRITICAL_SECTION. I ended up ifdef'ing the declaration of critical_section like so: #ifndef _WINBASE_ //header guard for winbase.h. struct critical_section { struct critical_section_debug * DebugInfo; long_type LockCount; long_type RecursionCount; handle_type OwningThread; handle_type LockSemaphore; ulong_ptr_type SpinCount; }; #else typedef CRITICAL_SECTION critical_section; #endif Please advise if you have a better solution. Since I did not get an answer on a related question, I am trying to state it different. It seems as if the "[]" access is not supported for const objects. Is there a reason for this, or is it a bug? thread_group behavior question

I've been using Boost for several months now, and I must say I've been very happy with it. I've primarily been using the threads and regex stuff from the library, and I have a question regarding the behavior of the thread_group.join_all method. In my current situation, I have a thread_group which launches several threads of execution for background servers, on an as-needed basis. If it becomes necessary to shutdown those background servers, I issue a join_all on the thread_group to wait for all activity to cease, then I can clear up the server instances themselves. If I issue a join_all from a thread and, while waiting for the join_all to exit, another thread creates a thread within my thread_group, what is expected? Will the join_all now wait for the original threads, as well as the newcomer, or will it only wait on the threads which were running at the time the join_all was called?? Thanx, Steve Dussinger

Intel 7.0 Compiler and date_time library

I did a small test -- compiled and run days_till_new_year.cpp against boost 1.29 (patched to not complain about __ICL 700) and current snapshot of boost CVS. Hmm, I'm not a very good evaluator I guess, I just went about my business using 7.0 without seeing if it worked correctly :) Rather than hacking ICL, you can modify boost/compiler/intel.hpp changing 600's to 700's. This probably is an error in the documentation (and the book), but I thought I'd just check to make sure: The documentation for the EventVisitor concept states: <quote> For example, the BFSVisitor of breadth_first_search() has a cycle_edge() member function. The corresponding tag is on_cycle_edge. </quote> As far as I can see BFSVisitor has no cycle_edge() function, and there is no on_cycle_edge tag in the code. The same function is also mentioned in chapter 12.3.1 of the book in the documentation of gray_target(e,g) and black_target(e,g) where it says that "A call to this function is always preceded by a call to the cycle_edge() function.". Kind of strange as the cycle_edge() function is not documented in the same chapter :) Regards, Tarjei

Under Linux Red Hat 8.1 Beta the lastest ICC/IA32 0.78 works without problems with boost regex 1.29. I just copiend over the libs/regex/build/ gcc.mak and gcc-shared.mak files to icc*.mak and changed the compiler name within to icc. Under RH8.0 I had some problems because the compiler chooked about the header containing the declarations for some tcp/ip data conversion functions htons() etc.. I've never used the bjam stuff up to now. Hello, Tired of MSVC deficiencies, and hoping to get certain performance increase I got evaluation version of Intel C++ compiler. I've heard lots of good things about this compiler, and was under impression that transition from MSVC to ICL should be very smooth. Huh, I had all kinds of troubles. First of all boost 1.29 gave up saying that it is an unknown compiler. Looking into config I figured that last known ICL was 6.0, so I just hacked it badly by redefining ICL as 600 prior to including any boost headers. I understand that it is not a good way, but hey, I am just evaluating it. Ok now everything compiled, but code using regex failed to link. No wonder, I have not build regex library with new compiler. It turns out that there is no makefile for any intel compiler, so I tried to do it with bjam, but seems that bjam did not set CC variable; it invoked compilation with just line of flags. At this point I gave up and decided to focus on parts of my project which do not depend on regex. Next surprise was when I tried to run tests, in debug mode everything was fine, but release mode failed miserably. It appears that date_time library does not work at all with optimization. Even setting /O1 did not help, only /Od worked. Failures were in very basic date operations, for instance boost::gregorian::date(2002,12,27) == boost::gregorian::date(2002,12,27) is not true! If I first construct a date, then ask for year, it throws, saying year is out of range. Many of those errors are easily worked around, its just hard to get the developers to change their code. HP, aCC and the standards

Hello Guys! I am now fighting with HP to recognize that their compiler is buggy. I am one of their customer and would like to get help with this fight. I want to use the boost.org format and regex libraries on HP-UX 11.00 with aCC, and I got contacted the local HP office about that. I told that I want to use modern libraries like the "boost.org" library. They answered that the HP aCC is the implementation of the ISO/IEC 14882 standard of the C++ language. Do you have any evidence that the HP implementation of C++ language breaks the standard and that's why the regex library and format library does not compile on those platform?
