Hello, Has anyone else had this problem? Problem with 1.30.0 lexical_cast

Compiler: gcc 3.2 and 3.2.2 I believe this is actually a bug in gcc, but I'm going to post it hopes that someone can help me. We have a handy little tool for generating enums with associated string conversion and stream insertion/extraction functions. When we upgraded to boost 1.30.0, lexical_cast'ing one of these enums to std::string started behaving incorrectly, rather than the name, it is giving me the integral value. It seems that the lexical_stream is being used. Unfortunately, my test case is working fine. The complete test case (including definition of ZAcquisition::PPG) is appended at the end. The code I am seeing failure with looks like: void foo(ZAcquisition::PPG::Type gt) { ... std::string str; str = boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(gt); std::cerr << "DEBUG, storing encode for PPG: " << str << ", aka " << gt << std::endl; ... } This outputs (for example): DEBUG, storing encode for PPG: 0, aka ONE I tried boost::lexical_cast<std::string, ZAcquisition::PPG::Type>(gt) as well. Boost thread question

I am having trouble getting the boost thread library to work. I am using Borland C++Builder 6 (on Win2k), and I tried the 1.29.0 release and the 1.30.0.b1 beta release and both give me the same errors in the condition.hpp file: line 93: " 'operator!' not implemented in type 'recursive_mutex' for arguments of the same type" and line 96: " 'recursive_mutex::m_mutex' is not accessible" Plus another 5 errors. I tried to look at the condition and recursive_mutex class definitions and I do not understand how they are implemented. Am I using it wrong to get that error? Let me know if you need a code sample. multi_array iterators ??

I am intersted in a simple way to iterate on a multi_array (or better yet a multi_array_view) regardless of dimension or ranges or order of access. I suppose for the entire multi_array one can use the data() method to return a T* and step through the contiguous memory block. But the case for a multi_array_view doesn't not seem nearly so simple taking into account strides, offsets, and degenerate ranges and all. Thanks in advance for any advice.

BCB6 Internal compiler error in "linear_congruential.hpp" from the random library

Hi, to whomever it may concern: I just downloaded boost 1.30 and tried to recompile my libraries and applications. Spirit semantic actions and closures

Hi I have a question about semantic actions which generate the equivalent of synthesized attributes. It seems that the right hand side of the expression below rule = element [rule.val = val_type(some_params)]; will require the type of val in the closure associated with rule to be val_type which has a constructor which looks like val_type::val_type(some_params). Its not clear to me however how I would synthesize an attribute which is a pointer to some type. For example, in the closure I would like the type of synthesized attribute to be val_type* and for the right hand side of assignment above to be val_type(some_params)() which returns a val_type* where the following was true of the () operator : const val_type* val_type::operator () {do something and eventually return a val_type*;} I'd be very grateful if someone could clue me in on how I might do this. thanks venkat

ublas: questions from a newcomer

I am interested in ublas for linear algebra. In addition to the simple operations supported by ublas I will need comprehensive access to lapack for the real work. I see in the wiki that some work has been done in this area. Is this numeric/binding stuff working, and can it be readily extended to the full set of lapack routines? Some kind of meta program to generate lapack interfaces from a parameter spec would be nice (ruby/perl? or just a description of what needs to be done) Then I could happily bring up the interfaces I need. Is there any way to generate vectore and matrices which do not own the data buffer which they provide access to - 'view' or 'sub' objects in other lin alg packages? This would be very valuable to me for interfacing existing code, without duplicating storage and doing unnecessary copies. I found it difficult to determine from the current documentation. I have one worry: Ublas, and most of the boost modules, seems to me not for the faint hearted. They are clearly powerful, but seem to expect a lot from a potential user. Are these facilities aimed at library writers rather than users whoes skill focus may lie in other domains? I am thinking of apl (and related J++ (not java)) which is very powerful, but has only minority appeal because it is too alien and unnatural for ordinary mortals. The advocates take great pride in how powerful a small and almost incomprehensible line of code can be (FFT in one short line etc.), and implicitly how clever they are to generate and understand it. I expect that a user level doc may eventually make ublas/lapack much more approachable by a non computer science mathematician or engineer. Forgive me if the above sounds critical and ungracious for free software, but I want to use boost and I am worried that it may be too demanding for its benefites to be justified for use by the group of people I work with. -- Stuart

If you cannot (or won't) perform the initialization in the constructor initializer, you'll need to reset the shared_array like so: p_data.reset(new uint8[data_length]); Or, in the initializer: c_Packet::c_Packet (const c_Packet & r_packet) : p_data(new uint8[r_packed.data_length]) { data_length = r_packet.data_length; ... } ...and then perform the memcpy. By the way, you are actually sharing this data, right? If not, scoped_array would probably be a better choice for managing resource lifetime. Bjorn Karlsson

I have a use for shared_array buy the memcpy line from the following code snippet(, and all memcpy's) throw an exception with the shared_arrays and I don't know why. regarding the quality of math functions in stl/boost

I've often heard that you should never trust your system implementation of functions like sqrt, exp, sin, cos, rand, etc. Instead, most mathematicians say that one should use an implementation that is known to be accurate up to some order. Unfortunately, using third-party code for these functions hinders portability. I know that boost has a formidable random number generation library that uses the cmath versions of basic math functions. Does the stl standard, or various implementations of stl, make any gaurantees about the accuracy of these basic math functions? Are they safe to use for mathematical applications in practice? I am trying new 1.30.0 release and got couple of problems on MSVC6 SP5. Newbie help with date_time

I am updating an old 1992-style application that previously used time_t based time to produce trend graphs of logged data. I am putting in ptime instead, and have come unstuck. The time range of the X-axis in this app is essentially under user control. It can show any period from a few seconds (sub seconds in the new version) up to three years. The labels on the x axis are placed at sensible points for the current range. For example if the graph shows 30 minutes, the ticks on the axis occur at 5 minute intervals; if it is displaying a week they occur on day boundaries. The old version of the program achieves this label placing by using the % operator and doing arithmetic with the seconds that underly time_t. I would like to do something similar with ptime. My attempt went like this: // Get next time (>= start) which falls on an itvl boundary ptime GetNextBoundary2(const ptime& start, const time_duration& itvl) { // Use 1/1/1970 as a base - not ideal but good enough for this const ptime origin(date(1970,1,1)); time_duration start_offset = start - origin; return ptime (start + itvl - nanosec(start_offset.ticks() % itvl.ticks())); } This fails because - among other reasons - although I can get ticks out, nanosec() won't put them back in again. I guess it is normalising on the way in? I feel sure I am going about this the wrong way, but am baffled as to what I should do next. All help gratefully received. Hello everyone, I've downloaded Boost 1.30.0 and tried to produce bjam from source using the MinGW environment. For the record, I'm using - MinGW-2.0.0-3 - binutils-2.13.90-2021006-02 - mingw-runtime-2.4 - w32api-2.2 Trying to bootstrap from source using build.bat mingw >> %TMP%\build.log 2>&1 from the DOS cmd-shell on a WinXP-Pro system I receive the following errors. ( To save some bandwidth I've stripped the file build.log" to the relevant pieces and send it in attachment "stripped.build.log" ) Please let me know if I missed something in the documentation. - Otherwise tell me how to proceed further, since I'm really interested in getting Boost running in my MinGW environment. Const Graph Property Maps

Hi Guys, I have three interesting questions in regard to graph properties. Please assume Boost 1_29_0. I'm a little slow in upgrading ... ;-) 1. If I define: MyGraph_t const myGraph; Why cannot I get a property map to access my property: typedef boost::property_map<MyGraph_t, MyPropTag_t>::type MyPropMap_t; MyPropMap_t myPropMap = get(MyPropTag_t(), myGraph); Instead I need to use for each access: get(MyPropTag_t(), myGraph, *i) I have noticed that gcc 3.2 complains in regard to conversion to a non-scalar type being similar to that of myGraph without const-ness of the nested property type. What can I do to get normal map access? 2. Why not use a copy constructor if it exists when copying graph elements? Is the existence of a copy constructor a hard-yard to verfiy with MPL? 3. I noticed that remove_edge(...) complains in regard to a missing default constructor of a property object. Don't get me wrong; this happened during an editing mishap and I know that we need regular types here. Why is this required if you are removing an element? Thanks for the pointers/opinions! :-) Matt

Suggest: tuple base class

Hi, I haven't found any discussion of this issue; it's possible I've just missed it. Anyway, the short form is that I'm trying to partially specialize a class for tuple types. I specialize for cons<H, T>, but specialization requires an exact type match, so tuple<...> will fail to match cons<...> and instead fall to the base template<class T> case--which has the wrong behavior. If I assume that the passed type is a tuple, I can use inheritance trickery and inherit from the tuple<...>::inherited case to match the correct case. Of course, this assumes that the template type is a tuple, when I can't make that assumption--I'm using specialization precisely because the type isn't known. I could specialize on tuple<T0...T9>, but that sets another arbitrary max tuple size; it would be nice to be able to match all tuples allowed by the boost::tuple implementation. So: I need a way to determine if a particular type is a tuple type, which would allow me to do the following: template<bool B, class T> class FooIf {}; template<class T> class Foo : public FooIf<is_tuple_type<T>, T> {}; template<class T> class FooIf<true, T> { /* tuple implementation */ }; template<class T> class FooIf<false, T> { /* non-tuple implementation */ }; AFAICT, there's no way to do so at present. I'd like to suggest a way to add this functionality: have cons<> (or tuple<>) inherit from a blank "tuple_base" class. This would let us use boost::is_base_and_derived to provide the is_tuple_type functionality for the code block above. Of course, it's possible I'm just missing a simple way to partially specialize for tuple types, or that such functionality is bad and unecessary. [MPL] Comments for a newbie

Hello everyone, I've only recently taken my first small steps into the world of metaprogramming, and now I've hit a snag. I'm trying to create a metafunction that returns the smallest unsigned integral type with at least the specified number of bits and, if no such type exists, reports an error. For example, ceil_uint<24> (named so for lack of a better name) returns the first member of the list consisting of unsigned char short unsigned int unsigned int long unsigned int whose number of bits is greater than or equal to 24. Building them up using operator<< might sacrifice this without an additional "reduction" phase to compile down to the most efficient automata. I guess this would be the regexp equivalent to endl. Still I like the idea as a debugging tool and I don't think the efficiency lost would be prohibitive. Regular expressions being more like trees rather than streams the << syntax might get a bit ugly with all the brackets required. E.g. char_class Punct = regex::PUNCTUATION + regex::SPACE reg_exp WordExpression = Kleene_closure(Punct) + Positive_closure(char_class("-") + regex::ALPHA) + Kleene_closure(Punct); I guess that is pretty ugly compared to the conventional syntax, despite the improved checkability. 1.30.0 - problem with filesystem lib

Hi, When using the filesystem lib in the 1.30.0 release, I experience hangs when incrementing the directory iterator. The compiler I've been using is MinGW, an example that exhibits the behaviour on my machine is included below. The hang only occurs when -mthreads is used. The hang occurs on the increment when there are no more files in the directory. Subject: numerous warnings in Thread library in 1.30.0 release when compiled by VC7.1 (or other vc versions) with warning level 3 or above We're in the process of migrating our project from V1.29.0 to 1.30.0. We are getting a lot of warnings with thread library such as the following: c:\Program Files\Boost\boost\thread\condition.hpp(38) : warning C4275: non dll-interface class 'boost::noncopyable' used as base for dll- interface class 'boost::detail::condition_impl' I know very little about bjam but it looks like it doesn't even use /Wn switch (correct me if I am wrong and the default is /W2. IMHO, it seems to me that it is always a good practice to set the warning level to at least 3. Also, we would really really like to have the static library option back. :-) Best regards, Sean

I posted a solution to this for the v1 jambuild on the jambuild list, but not sure if anything will come of it since most of the effort is going into v2. My solution (for threads only) was to add a simple stage target at the end of the root Jamfile. Here it is: stage bin : ## Source Files ## <dll>libs/thread/build/boost_thread : ## Tags ## <tag><debug>"d" : ## default variants ## debug release ; This puts all the libs and such in $(BOOST)/bin s.t. all debug variants have are of the form <libraryname>d.<extension>. This is not completely robust (since the possible variants are huge), but it should help basic users out who need one of the generated libs. Makes linking and DLL/SO access much simpler. Under v2 it will be a different ball of wax, but much better/more maintainable (IMHO). Regex++ newbie problems

Hi, I've just started using Regex++ (from boost 1.29.0) and I'm experiencing some strangeness that don't seem to be mentioned in the faq. Firstly I found that [-A-Za-z]+ matched spaces and punctuation characters unexpectedly rather than plain alphabetic characters and hyphens only as desired. Reading the documentation I altered this to [-:alpha:] & [-:upper::lower] with no effect. So I decided to experiment with adding ^[:space:]. When finally I reached the expression below I got a coredump where the expression was declared. The intention of this expression was to strip and keep leading and trailing punctuation and spaces as well as extracting a word from the middle. static const boost::regex Word_expression("([:punct::space:]*)([-:upper::lower:^[:punct::space:]]+)([: punct::space:]*)"); Is it right that 'bad' expressions should coredump? And if so in what way is the above expression bad? Hello, Could anybody help me with my first compilation of a simple code using MATRIX class from uBLAS library? Namely, I can't set all the "include" properly. Could you please explain to me what is still missing? I cannot find any example on the BOOST web. I am not much experienced in all this "include" stuff. Dear People, I have defined a function as follows. double accept_prob_fn(const double x, const double be, const double theta, const double a, const double b); Now, I define the temporary function object bind(accept_prob_fn, _1, be, theta, a, b); So this function object would return the first argument, x. However, I want to save this function object to a function object called foo, say. So I want to do something like Type foo = bind(accept_prob_fn, _1, be, theta, a, b); However, the problem I have is that I'm not sure what type foo should be. I forced an error with my compiler (to try to see what it thought the type of the rhs should be) by using Type as double, but all I got was brent.cc:9: cannot convert `boost::_bi::bind_t<double, double (*)(double, double, double, double, double), boost::_bi::list5<boost::arg<1>, boost::_bi::value<double>, boost::_bi::value<double>, boost::_bi::value<double>, boost::_bi::value<double> > >' to `double' in initialization Eww. I've tried looking at the documentation, but I find it pretty much incomprehensible. Could someone a) Tell me what "Type" should be. b) Give me some brief indication of the reasoning by which one might arrive at this conclusion, with appropriate references to the documentation? Hi It is very common in Java when using pattern as EventListener having an inner class Adapter as the listener. I wanted that and more, I couldn't use "this" as the source of a shared ptr since then we will have to ref cnt to the same object ... Such scenario will cause a problem when one of the ref cnts will reach zero will delete the object and the other ref will point to a destructed object. The Problem : how define an inner class which would delegate functionality of the main class and break the ever annoying problem of giving ref to the main class. Problem with boost::timer on BCB

Hi All, Just an FYI for those interested. When compiling an application in RELEASE mode in BCB 5 the function std::clock() does not always return what you expect it to. In those cases, either an overflow or an invalid operation exception occurs. Using a "long double" for the return type prevents the exceptions, but the values are still incorrect (and way off!). If you don't need a resolution greater than one second, consider using the time(NULL) function instead. This one does work. -- Mike

We are updating our logging library at the moment, and as we now support multiple compilers I am looking to use BOOST_CURRENT_FUNCTION rather than many compiler checks through our code! Two questions: i/ Does it work with Borland C++Builder6? Although it seems to detect the correct macro, this is expanding to an empty string when used. ii/ Why is the logic implemented inside an empty function inside the ::boost::detail namespace? As everything is preprocessor based I do not see the benefit this brings, but assume it must have been done for a good reason so I am darned curious! <g> -- AlisdairM

Poisson distribution for large mean

Hi, I am using poisson distribution (boost/random/poisson_distribution.hpp), and have encountered a problem when using a large mean. Let's say I'm setting up my poisson distribution with mean = MEAN, and repicking a sequence of 1000 random numbers. If I average out these 1000 numbers, I would expect to get MEAN (or very close to it). This works OK for mean < 745. Afterwards, no matter how large I set the mean, the same sequence of numbers is generated, with average of 745. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Ksenia

Yes, but as of the last version I got from CVS (threads/Jamfile dated 1/30/03) it put it in a folder [$(BOOST)/libs/thread/bin-stage] that is not common with other produced libs. This is better than the gristed folders, but still not as useful or convenient as a top level common folder [like $(BOOST)/bin-stage]. When I need to specify in Linux where to look for shared libs, or when I want to add the .lib to link with in MSVC, I prefer the one-stop-shopping for all my boost libs. Perhaps I'm just being lazy, but that is the mother of invention, after all ;). There are undoubtedly many other good specializations out there, but few are used (mainly because it is very hard to define what a "good RNG" is). Anyway, what I was thinking is that you might make some of your own specializations that are known to be bad RNGs, and discuss why they are bad. gcc - cygwin - warning: too many 'l' suffixes in integer constant

Hi, I have just begun using boost with gcc-3.2 on a vanilla PC-cygwin platform. Up until deciding to use boost I have been compiling with warnings treated as errors. I am getting warning too many 'l' suffixes in integer constant. See output below. Does anyone know what is going on here? The lines in the boost header file of interest use ULL as suffix. I presume this is intended to mean unsigned long long though I could not track down the #define (ULL being a rather common string). I have discovered that using ull in the preprocessor gives this warning though it is legal when declaring a constant in the language itself. This looks like an inconsistency within gcc. Perhaps because long long isn't officially in ISO C++ yet only C99 (correct me if I'm wrong). I managed to remove all but two occurances of the warning by taking the dubious action of changing ull to ul in boost in cstdint.h & limits.h but I could not track down the remaining instances. Are these suffixes necessary for these constants anyway? If the constant is big enough to need to be a long long the compiler should detect that and do any promotions necessary before comparison, shouldn't it? If its just for buggy compilers (assuming gcc isn't one of them in this case) can't ULL be #defined away? Where can I find this definition? The Boost.Random library defines fully-generic random number generator algorithms, e.g., boost::random::mersenne_twister, boost::random::linear_congruential, etc. These are only for advanced users. The Boost.Random library also provides specializations of those generic random number generator algorithms for use by normal users. e.g., boost::mt19937 and boost::mt11213b are both specializations of the Mersenne twister; and boost::minstd_rand is a specialization of the linear congruential algorithm. Below, I have created a small sample program of the type I am trying to create in order to use the various classes in boost::random with Diehard (requires a binary file of 32 bit integers for testing). This program does not compile as it says that mersenne_twister requires template arguments. I understand what that means of course, but am unsure as to what arguments should go in there. AFAIK, there is no way to place all the .lib files in a single directory. The phrase "building applications with boost" leads me to state: Boost is not a library. Rather, Boost is a collection of libraries. Most of the Boost libraries (such as Boost.Random) are header libraries, which means that you add ${BOOST} to the include path of your compiler and you're done with the "installation". There are a few Boost libraries (Python, Regex, Signals, Test, and Thread) that produce actual .lib library files. If you are not using those libraries, you do not need to build the .lib files. I have a general question about finnishing the install process for boost. I have built boost on Cygwin/Gcc3.x/winXP and now have many versions of various libraries in a deep directory tree. Now, suppose I want to compile something, say random_test.cpp from http://www.boost.org/libs/random/index.html I get the following compiler error /cygdrive/c/DOCUME~1/aspeight/LOCALS~1/Temp/ccQGyqEq.o (.text$_Z8validateIN5boost6rand48EEvRKSsRKT_+0x103):random_test.cpp: undefined reference to `boost::test_toolbox::detail::test_and_continue_impl(bool, boost::test_toolbox::detail::wrapstrstream const&, char const*, int, bool, boost::unit_test_framework::report_level)' Clearly, I need to link to one of the boost::test library. Blind dynamic cast

I have a problem in dynamic casting. sc_object *o = (sc_object*)(x[i]); if (typeid(*o)==typeid(sc_out<bool>)) sc_out<bool> *thisPort=dynamic_cast<sc_out<bool> *>(o); sc_out<T> type is a polymorphic template class that inherits sc_object class. I would like to cast the polymorphic object (*o) without to know the template type T of sc_out<T>. I would avoid all the possible casts that can result in an enormous computational burden. I would like to access to the methods of sc_out<T> type.I cannot modify the code of sc_out<T> and sc_object.Does exist any way to perform this "blind" operation? compose_f_gx problem

hi, I've got a question regarding the compose_f_gx function object. Efficient implementation of associative_property_map

Dear Boost users, for an application in computational biology I am intendig to use the BGL to compute strongly connected components of a graph with about 600.000 nodes. In the BGL book on page 103 it is mentioned, that "The choice to use std::map to implement the property map is rather inefficient in this case...". Since my graph is large I'm a bit worried about this statement. BGL: getting components of graphs with properties

Dear Group, when computing the connected components of a BGL graph one has to create a vector that holds the component integer assigned to each vertex (See http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/example/connected_components.cpp and http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/connected_components.html) OK, that works very well. But how can I get the component number of each vertex? If my graph has internal properties, I can not simply access the vector with an iterator on the graph vertices: component[*vi]; //doesn't work! This doesn't work, because the vertices (to be specific: the vertex desriptors) of the graph aren't integers if the graph has internal properties. [V2] Problems with stage rule

Hi, I am having few problems on CygWin with latest boost CVS snapshot. I am building project with a number of dlls, and I need a way to run program easily. I tried hardcode-dll-paths=true, but it does not seem to work on CygWin, so I decided to use stage rule to copy all binaries in top/bin folder. First problem was that CP variable is empty and copying of the dlls failed. I worked around this one with bjam -sCP=cp. BTW, was not it supposed to be relinked rather then copied? Next problem was with exe file. boost::thread not started

Platform : Windows XP, Pentium 4, Visual C++ 6 sp5 I've traced down my problem with starting a thread from a DLL called from Java JNI. If you look at the source code thread.cpp in boost, you can see that a condition variable is used block the creating thread until the new thread function is started. Basically, what I am seeing is that if you wait on this condition variable, then the thread will never start. If I remove the call to param.wait() at the bottom of the constructor then everything works fine. I can't think of a logical explanation, but it's very repeatable. I was also able to recreate this problem using the latest source from CVS. The simple solution would be to remove the condition variable from thread_param code entirely. This would simplify everything, and I don't really see the value anyway. All that is currently guaranteed is that thread_proxy will be called before the boost::thread() constructor is finished. But it doesn't guarantee that threadfunc() will be called before the constructor is finished. Thanks, Justin Michel OCI

As I am still on my spline templates, I came on to the following beast: template<class T> struct index_vector : public vector<std::pair<T, vector<ublas::vector<T>::size_type> > > {}; This should be an index vector that relates to a double (first) a vector of indices (second) which happens to be different for each 'first'. So far so easy. I can say: index_vector<double> IY; IY.resize(5); IY[0].first = 3.14; IY[0].second.reset(vector<double>(3)); IY[0].second[2] = 1; But I cannot: index_vector<double> IZ(IY); or index_vector<double> IZ; IZ = IY; or IZ.reset(IY); This compiles, but gives me runtime assertions because of size mismatches. I think my derived class is not 'copy constructible' and 'assignable'. Is there a simple way to fix this? (I am not even sure whether this is a uBLAS matter. How to get extents of multi_array dimensions

I am using multi-array for the first time, without problems. Now I want to pass the multi_array around and the users of it need to find out what the maximum array indexes are in each dimension. But I do not know how to obtain them from the object. I have read the documentation and the header file but if there are any clues there I have missed them. I have also searched the archives of this list for relevant posts. Is there a call on multi_array to return the array bounds and if so how do you specify which dimension you are requesting the bounds of? Does anyone have an example they could post? Hi, My IDE is VC++6.0. I'm on win2k, using boost 1.29.0. I'm trying to get the quick tour (BOOST_HOME/libs/graph/doc/quick_tour.html) of the graph library to compile, but am experiencing a problem. In the example on how to invoke Dijkstra's algorithm, it seems we're calling a function index(*vi). I'm guessing it's supposed to get the node number for the node at vertex_iterator vi. The problem is that my compiler can't find the function ('index' : undeclared identifier). Doing a manual 'search in files' doesn't reveal any legible candidates either. Is this an error in the docs or am I missing something bigger here? kind regards, Dieter Vrancken

Problem with tuples::ignore

I'm sure I've seen posts about this, but have been unable to track it down... Apparently gcc 3.2 only uses the cpp file name to "anonymize" anonymous namespaces. My problem is that Application A links libs B and C, which both have files named foo.cpp. These foo.cpp's both include boost/tuples/details/tuple_basic.hpp, thus causing duplicate symbols of tuples::{anonymous}::ignore. Obviously I can work around this by renaming the cpp files, but I thought I'd see if there was a quicker solution. thread problems with Java JNI

A simple test program using boost::thread works fine, but when I try to use boost::thread in a DLL library which is called from a Java thread, the thread blocks forever in the constructor for boost::thread. Looking at the source code for boost::thread, I see that it blocks on a condition waiting for the thread to start. Maybe the thread never starts? So. I modified my code to use _beginthreadex() directly to start my worker thread. I hoped to at least get a better idea of what was going wrong, but the code worked flawlessly. Are there known problems with using boost::thread from a DLL? Any other ideas? Thanks, Justin Michel

boost-build path discrepancies

As per my recent post "Installing boost libs for dependant apps," I recently used the boost-build system for my own apps make setup. I found it to be very powerful and useful (more than I could use to begin with). I used the version 1 build system becuase it looked like it would be easier to get up and running, but plan to migrate to v2 soon since it is more powerful and I much prefer the dependency handling of adding sub-projects by name, not path to a Jamfile. But I need to learn it first. I did this on RedHat 8.0 using gcc 3.2.2 with a cut of the Boost CVS from 2/6/2003 on the Boost-Build v1.30.0. I copied most of the main files (features.jam, boost-build.jam, etc) from the main boost build setup in BOOST_ROOT and BOOST_ROOT/tools/build. I ran into two issues with pathing and another with the LinkLibraries rule. I tried a couple of approaches to including externally built libraries to my build hierarchy (several sub-project libs and one app). When I tried LinkLibraries it didn't complain, but the library never got added to my link action in the NEEDLIBS variable. I tried tracing it down and added Echo actions to the LinkLibraries to see what it was adding, which was nothing, but I could have mis-understood the NEEDLIBS on $(<) expression. Regardless, they did not appear in the list of libs passed to the linker. I then tried the <libraryfile> feature in my requirements section. That worked fine. So, is LinkLibraries deprecated (the docs did not mention it that I could find)? I had it first in my list, before my exe target, but in the same file. Was it supposed to go after? I liked LinkLibraries better than the <libraryfile> since it would do the name mangling for me (prefix="lib", suffix=".so" under gcc). The other problem I ran into revolved around use of relative paths and I believe my results are counter to what the documentation claims. First, when I added dependant libraries as source entries in my exe target the docs claim I can make those paths absolute. My setup is a little out of the norm in that my app is at the leaf node of the directory tree, so the relative path to the main lib it needed was $(DOTDOT). However, I have several libs common to other apps, but in the same boost build hierarchy, so those are relative to $(BOOST_ROOT). When I tried having a source line: <lib>$(BOOST_ROOT)/Common/CommonLib from within my Jamfile located at $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib/Server The output when I tried bjam was: (|ServerLib|Server|home|michael|Proj|Common) not found (I am only sure of the folder part of that, the exact error syntax may be slightly off). I had to specify the paths as: $(DOTDOT)/$(DOTDOT)/Common/CommonLib In the second case, it was relative pathing that wouldn't work. I specified most of the common features and settings using template targets that I then imported into each Jamfile (Very nice feature). The one of concern was located in the $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib folder. In the $(BOOST_ROOT)/ServerLib/Server/Jamfile I added a requirement: <include>$(DOTDOT) To get back to ServerLib which it depends on. I swear that worked the first time I got it built, but last night when I did a rebuild all (bjam -a) it failed and claimed it could not find include files. I ended up having to change it to absolute pathing to work. Are the docs wrong on the two pathing issues? Is there something I could be setting up wrong to get the behavior I saw? thanks. michael

installing boost libs for dependant apps

I just completed porting our server from XP to Linux, which uses Boost::Thread for the threading library. I found it was infinitely more convenient to publish the libs in their various formats (variant|sub-variant) into a common, top-level folder under BOOST_ROOT. This made it much more managable to both link it into my application (without having to grist the folder name) and add the proper path to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH env var so it could find the shared libraries when I ran. I don't know if there is a prescribed way of doing this already in place, but I did not see anything in the build documentation (like bjam "Install [folder]" or some such). I ended up modifying the BOOST_ROOT/Jamfile to have a stage target that published all the threading libs to BOOST_ROOT/bin with proper suffixes for the variants I cared about (debug and release for the moment). I still had to append the proper suffixes in my own Jamfile (I used BJam for my make as well), but it was a heck of a lot better than a 10 deep folder hierarchy. I have a couple of question and two requests. For reference I am using a cut from CVS around 2/6/2003. How are others doing this sort of thing that are using Boost? Is there a common way to do what I did by doctoring the Jamfile that is less invasive (so I don't have to repeat in the future when I get releases from CVS)? I am new to Linux & Boost, so may not know how I should be getting at these things. My request, if the answers to the above don't address them, is that some form of install or publish to a common location be added to the boost build. If I were more intimately familiar with Boost and the build system (and the various installation platforms) I would volunteer to help, but... My second request may also already be possible, but my limited experiment and reading made it seem not. I'd like to be able to declare a sub-project that points to a whole other boost-build.jam hierarchy; e.g. I want to make Boost a sub-project of mine. This seems much more plausible and likely in the new versoin 2 format where the dependency declarations are more straight-forward (by name, not explicit path). I await your feedback. Thanks. michael

Using Unit Tests w/Codewarrior Pro 8.3

Folks, I'd like to be able to run a boost unit test, e.g. is_convertible_test.cpp, as kind of a one-shot apart from having to deal with the rest of boost. So I read the documentation on the unit test framework, and it seems like this should be relatively straightforward. I've created a Carbon Console project in Codewarrior, which contains the following files: is_convertible_test.cpp init.cpp (from type_traits/test) unit_test_main.cpp unit_test_suite.cpp unit_test_result.cpp unit_test_log.cpp unit_test_monitor.cpp execution_monitor.cpp unit_test_parameters.cpp test_tools.cpp This all compiles and links file, which is a relief in and of itself. :-) However, when I simply run the app, I get "*** No errors detected". If I remove is_convertible_test.cpp and rebuild and run again, I get the same result. :-) So my suspicion is that I need to do more to let the framework know that it needs to run is_convertible_test.cpp. Can someone please clue me in as to what that is, in minimal terms? shared_ptr 1.27 w/gcc 2.96 (VxWorks)

We are using boost 1.27 (I know, I know) with the real-time operating system VxWorks, which ships with its own "special" version of gcc 2.96 (not that same as Red Hats - I know, I know). Today I finally got around to providing a version of atomic_count.hpp for VxWorks. I had to play some games with #defines to get BOOST_HAS_THREADS and all the other things set up right before my implementation would get chosen. Once that was squared away, I put a cout in the constructor of my atomic_count class just be sure it was all working. I then stamped down a shared_ptr<int> and much to my surprise: no text output. I traced it back to the constructor for counted_base_impl (a templated class). That constructor was being called, but it inherits from counted_base, and that constructor was just not getting called! I searched your bug list on source forge but found no mention of this. But then again, its not really a boost bug! I then took a look at boost 1.29 and noticed that lots of things had been reworked in this area, so now looks like the reason to start using 1.29. I'm afraid I am stuck with VxWorks and that compiler though... So I'm just throwing this out in case anyone is remotely in the same situation as we are. I will start using 1.29 and see what happens. Hopefully its not too hard to customize the OS specific part in 1.29. I also suggest a note get added to the shared_ptr documentation about this OS specific mutex stuff thats going on. I got curious about how that was done and decided to look. Had I not done this, my shared_ptr's reference count would not have been thread safe and I wouldn't have known this. Also, is there a "what has changed in this new version of boost" file somewhere? Thanks again everyone. BN

[BGL] Preconditioned color maps?

In an algorithm I'm working on I need to do an undirected_dfs using a visitor for analysis. I know my starting vertex, and I also want the DFS to skip one of the starting vertex's adjacent vertices (i.e. don't proceed in the "direction" from the starting vertex). Example: d-e-f / a-b-c \ g-h-i Starting vertex is 'c' and I want to eliminate the "d-e-f" branch, so the DFS finds "c-b-a" and "c-g-h-i". My first idea was to set up a vertex color map, and set the color to black for vertex 'd' in the example above, but that doesn't do much good as the undirected_dfs sets all colors to white initially. My second thought was to feed the vertex I want to eliminate and the vertex color map to my dfs_visitor implementation, something like: discover_vertex(u, g) { if (u == blocked) { vertex_colormap[u] = black; } } Will the latter approach work satisfactory? If not, is there some other way which I can use to precondition the color maps used in the BGL algorithms? Thanks, -- Tarjei

Part of the problem actually comes from whether the products are accumulated into a register by the compiler, or whether they are accumulated into memory. If accumulated into a 387 register it has higher-precision before it is rounded back down to 64-bits to be stored into memory. If the compiler generates code to accumulate the products directly into memory then the results of each individual product are rounded to 64-bits at every iteration and the result will be slightly less accurate. Now, when the -msse2 flag is used, the registers are 64-bit only and thus no accuracy is gained by using them, only speed. -- Stephen [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

GCC 3.2 compiler error using Boost::Threads::Mutex::scoped_lock

Disclaimer: I am relatively new to gcc, linux and Boost. I'm hoping someone out in the group who is much more knowledgable about all of them can help me get past a hurdle in code I am porting from Windows. I am getting a vague error message from g++ (gcc 3.2-7 under Redhat Linux 8.0) in my code using the Boost scoped_lock. I have wrapped the Boost versions of mutex and mutex::scoped_lock as: class PMutex { public: PMutex() {} virtual ~PMutex() {} protected: boost::mutex m_Mutex; friend class PScopedLock; }; class PScopedLock { public: explicit PScopedLock( PMutex& M ) : m_ScopedLock(M.m_Mutex) {} virtual ~PScopedLock() {} static PScopedLock* Create( PMutex& M ) { return (PScopedLock*) ::new PScopedLock(M); } void Destroy( void ) { delete this; } protected: void* operator new(size_t) {} // disallowed, must declare on the stack boost::mutex::scoped_lock m_ScopedLock; friend class PCondition; }; The error is "ISO C++ forbids declarations of 'type name' with no type". I get that error on several lines, but most notably on a simple declaration like: PScopedLock Lock(MyMutex); From what little I can find on the newsgroups, this sort of error has been noted when use of template template parameters are not declared quite correctly (without the trailing ::template from what I can gather). But as far as I can tell, I should not be having that issue. I am not knowledgeable enough about templates, Boost or gcc/g++ to sort out what I am running into. Boost builds fine under gcc, the code I am porting compiles fine under MSVC6 and Kylix3, but not gcc. Can anyone help me out? thanks. michael

Hi, I am trying to get boost compiled on OS390. Has anyone done it successfully so far? The compiler on OS390(version2 release10) is complaining of empty template parameter. Hi, *) First question: I am trying to get a reference to data of a container in the following way: matrix<double> m(3,3); vector<double>& v(m.column(2)); But this seems not to be possible. Is there a way to achieve this behaviour? What I basically want to achive is having functor object that holds a reference to a row/column of my container matrix. >From my questions about argument types I know that m.column(2) is a kind of an expression. How can I get the underlying reference to data if there even is one? *) Second question: matrix<double> m(10,3); ... fill the matrix ... matrix<double>::iterator it; // wrong this does not work!! for (it = m.column(2).begin(); it != m.colum(2).end(); ++it) { cout << *it << " " << foo(*it) << endl; } How would I declare my iterator? I understand when I use std::library-algorithms the automatic template parameter defer will give me the correct type from begin(). But in my case how should I declare the iterator? G is irregular. h : x -> h(x) whose values are in [0,1] The problem is to find the y0 so that G'(y0) maximise h(xa), ...,h(xm). (assume that h(xi) near of 1 for all xi in G'(y0) ) One simple approch would be to calculate h(x) for all x associated to all y and keep the maximum, but this lead to too much calculations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I try to organized E into a binary tree. The idee is to shrink E so that each schink step truncate the search space. lets take x0 so that card G(x0) be maximum. We have the composed application of G with its reverse one G': G o G' (x0) = {xaa....xpa, xab,...xpb, xpa,....xpn} means that x0 is tied to some other x's in E by G. if h(x0) is the not near 1, then the y we are looking for will have fewer chance to belongs to G'(x0), so it is not worth to look at all the h(xaa), ...h(xpn). Exporting references into boost::python

A newbie question regarding boost::python. I need to make a templatized function that returns a boost::python::object containing a reference to an object I already have. Basically: template<class T> object convertToPython (T &obj) { return object (obj) } All classes I pass through T are already wrapped (they are also not copy-constructible). I tried with the code found at python.orgs wiki: template<class T> T& identity(T& x) { return x; } template<class T> object get_object_reference (T& x) { object f = make_function (&identity<T>, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object()); return f(x); } this code gave me a compile error (on CW 8.3, Mac OS X). Apparently CW is convinced that the &identity<T> maps to void. I then tried to hardcode a type just to see if it worked at all: InputManager &identity (InputManager &x) { return x; } object get_object_reference (InputManager &x) { object f = make_function ( &identity, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object()); return f(x); } This compiled, but gave me a typeerror at runtime: (No to_python (by-value) converter found for c++ type: InputManager) I've seccesfully wrapped functions like this: InputManager &GetInputManager(); BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE (Engine) { def ( "GetInputManager", &GetInputManager, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object() ); } So it should be able to work. VC7 says 'fatal C1067' compiling multi_array?

Greetings: I'm using VC7 and boost_1_29_0 to compile this code that is using multi_array.hpp. typedef boost::multi_array<double, 4> theta4_t; typedef theta4_t::index index; theta4_t Theta_Trun( boost::extents[10000][2][10][256] ); I'm receiving this error: "fatal error C1067: compiler limit: debug information module size exceeded" Of course, the code compiles fine using the "Release" configuration, but I need the "Debug" one also. Is there a workaround for this, other than the 'make your variables shorter' suggested in the VC7 documentation? Thanks, -Clift

are namespaces of boost libs required to be lowercase?

Hi! If someone wants to contribute code to boost: Is she required to provide the names of all namespaces lowercase? E.g. someone provides Elefant, the big library. Is she allowed to have namespace Elefant and perhaps namespace Elefant::Private, etc. I could not find any hint except this here, which did not really help me, since I do not know the standard library's conventions. Any link/ hint appreciated: -- citation from the boost docs -- "Naming conventions rationale The C++ standard committee's Library Working Group discussed this issue in detail, and over a long period of time. The discussion was repeated again in early boost postings. A short summary: Naming conventions are contentious, and although several are widely used, no one style predominates. poisson_distribution header file

Hi, I am using boost_1_29_0 to implement random distribution functions. The standard download included implementation of uniform, normal and exponential distributions - and they work great. I also need an implementation of poisson distribution, and I have noticed that poisson_distribution.hpp was added to CVS last October. I got the file, and put it into the boost/random/ directory, with the other random distribution files. However, when I try using poisson distribution, I get a series of 0's instead of a series of random numbers, although I'm using it exactly the same way as with the other distributions. I am not sure whether the problem is due to incorrect installation of the new file, or due to bugs in the implementation. I tried cleaning the boost_1_29_0 directory, and running bjam again, but still no luck. Is there anything else I should do to include this new header file? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
